Customer Reviews:
Not too exited about it.......2007-06-10
I have no idea where do those 5 stars from the numerous reviews come from. This book is closer to a soap opera then to a serious mystery novel. It reminds me little of M.C. Beaton novels, only that in my opinion those are significantly more enjoyable to read. Perhaps it has been a mistake to start with a 5th book in the series, if the 1st book in the series comes my way I will give it a try, if only to verify that the rest is not much better then the 5th. I guess these books are targeted towards female audience.
On the other thought, I might give this author miss in a future it took a considerable effort to get to the end of this book. Not my cup of tea.
Love the author.......2007-01-09
I love this author. Her writing is whitty, and intelligent. I am also a great fan of her other mystery series.
Where, Oh Where.......2005-01-04
Where, oh where, is another Vicky Bliss novel? Although I'm a major fan of the Amelia Peabody series, beginning with Crocodile On A Sandbank, I'm also a fan of Vicky Bliss (is it just me, or do others find her last name amusing, given her determination to be taken seriously?). Vicky and her fellow characters are an incredible bunch, and I've always enjoyed her adventures. This time it's off to Egypt, where she begins to doubt her own sanity, and as always, the sincerity of her some time lover, John Smythe. But fear not, gentle reader, all will be explained. Usually with the wit and humor this series is famous for. Elizabeth Peters writes wonderfully amusing dialogue, and the scenes crackle. My only complaint is that we haven't seen Vicky in a long time, and I, for one, miss this series. This one is a roller coaster in the manner of Indiana Jones. Don't miss this one, it's a real treat for fans!
A must read!.......2004-10-30
Elizabeth Peters is one of the best authors I have read any books from, ever. In Night Train to Memphis, which was the first one I read in the Vicky Bliss series, I became absolutley hooked. Imagine my joy then, when I found that she had four more in the series, beginning with Borrower of the Night, proceeding to Street of Five Moons, which is succeeded by Silhouette in Scarlet, to Trojan Gold, and then back to Night Train to Memphis. It is much better to read them in order, I have learned, but it's ok if you've already started. I have read them all maybe 100 times and still love them. I have my fingers crossed and hands entwined in prayer that she will write another Vicky Bliss. To tide you over, I highly reccomend her Amelia Peabody Series, which starts with Crocodile on the Sandbank and has many things in them that are so fun to read in the Vicky Bliss books, such as the wit and strong female character.
Vicky and John (and Schmidt) go to Egypt.......2004-06-10
and have many interesting adventures there.
In this 1994 adventure, the 5th, and unfortunately latest, in the Vicky Bliss series Dr. Vicky Bliss is approached to foil a planned robbery of Egyptian artifacts from the Cario museum. She is asked to pose as an expert on a Nile cruise, a cruise geared for amateur Egyptolists. Vicky protested her unsuitablity for this assignment until she realized that the suspected thief was none other than her sometime lover, the mysterious "Sir John Smythe".
Naturally Vicky does join the group, and does find her lover there - along with his mother and new bride. The adventure then takes off at a typical Peters breakneck pace, filled with bodies, false identities, lies, wild chases through the desert night, fantastic escapes and....well if you've read any of Peter's work you get the picture and if you haven't you should, just don't start with this one.
For fans of Peter's work there are many wonderful little treats in this one, John claims a name from his past as his own, hints at a long family connection to Egypt (could his real last name be Emerson?), Schmidt is developed as more than a cardboard comic character, a husband and wife Egyptologist team of the past century is mentioned and a 'writer of popular Egyptian mystery adventures' makes a cameo apprearance.
This is a particularly fun read, only marred by the fact that it is the last Vicky Bliss - so far - I refuse to give up hope!

Anok, Heretic of Set: Another Disappointment.......2005-12-22
Yet another fantasy novel where everything is resolved by magic. Magic is so prevelant that one scene requires a location in a "no-magic" zone - but of course magic is needed there to resolve the conflict of that scene, so the no-magic zone includes a magic zone!
In book two, of course, Anok meets a priest who may as well have stepped out of an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. It is Kaman Awi Urshé, the high priest of Set who somehow lacks arrogance, but comes across as an old, bumbling, cordial, tinkering busybody intent on learning modern science - like the old guy in The Scorpion King or the old teacher in Young Sherlock Holmes, the guys who can create anachronistic gun powder or airplanes. I have seen this type of character in so many movies/TV shows that he bored me from the get-go.
His descriptions are wonderful, though. It is easy to read and easy to visualize. However, I was hoping for a stronger plot and stronger characters (Anok is supposed to be falling into darkness, but he isn't; and the supporting characters do nothing and add nothing to the storyline).
DISAPPOINTING downhill slide.........2005-12-15
'Heretic of Set' - Anok, Heretic of Stygia trilogy - book 2
I've got mixed feelings about book 2. Again, it is well written with plenty of good detail and atmosphere. York does well researched cities and desert travel, and has some clever ideas.
there are lots of interesting sections about the following subjects..
..Sorcery and the madness and corruption it causes.
..the cult of Set and the plotting of some of it's high-level members.
..scholars and research of ancient sorcery in secret scrolls and tablets, and potions and poisons.
And eventually..[at last] we get a short 'adventure', more surprises and awesome powerful magic in items and sorcerers.. in magic castle and Atlantean tomb!
There are lots of 'exaggerated' claims and rumours about King Conan and Thoth-Amon [TA ] throughout the book. and YES, later TA makes an impact in the book! [but i cannot reveal more. i will not spoil it for you. but suffice to say that fans of 'Conan the destroyer' film and comic fans are in for a big treat? but R.E.Howard and J.M.Roberts fans [like myself] may find this flamboyant version of TA too 'spectacular' and over-the-top maniacal?]
But the other characters that i like [Fallon and Tefiri] and the main plot often get neglected and 'lost' among this long, interesting and detailed 'documentary' about Stygian sorcery. Fallon is completely 'wasted' and woefully under-used through most of this book. and great opportunities to liven up the book with her were badly missed. i am very disappointed.:(
Sadly, most of the 'combats' [and there are more magic practice tests and 'dreams' than gritty sword-fights] seem uninspired and somewhat dull and corny even though most involve spectacular powerful magic.
There was no good exciting 'adventure' for me untill the last 60 pages of this book. and then it ended too soon, and seemed rushed? [there are only 263 pages in book 2. why not fill it up to 300 pages when you finally get a decent adventure mission going?]
there are some good bits in the last 60 pages and thankfully the climax is quite satisfying.
Anok has become far too powerful now and i suppose i find him boring, and he still does some 'silly' things. [and if he gets any more 'implants' he will become another 'Borg from Star Trek'?!] ;)
it's not a bad book but i found it lacking the 'exciting adventure' promised by book 1.
Rating = 5 /10. very disappointing after book 1.
[ NB. read reviews of all 3 books before you decide to invest your time]
The heart of the desert, the soul of the snake.......2005-12-13
In this, the second book of the Anok series, J Steven York ups the ante. Anok is not only more powerful, he is more likely to use that power, and with fewer pangs of guilt. He is embracing the evil mark of Set just as it constricts his flesh. His friends reach out to help, but Anok seems more focused on himself, resulting in a more accomplished, more tragic direction for the young acolyte. Classic Conan enemy Thoth-Amon makes a disturbing appearance, one that Anok will not soon forget. This is another excellent glimpse into the world created by Robert E. Howard, and the time when Conan was king.
Book Description
DO YOU KNOW ONE OF THESE MEN?
T
he catch-me-if-you-can lover...
Phil's romantic and passionate one minute, distant and cold the next.
The deviously manipulative coworker or boss...
Jack denies resenting Nora's rapid rise in the company, but when they're assigned to work together on a project, he undermines her.
The obstructionist, procrastinating husband...
Bob keeps telling his wife he'll finish the painting job he began years ago, but he never seems to get around to it.
These are all classic examples of the passive-aggressive man. This personality syndrome -- in which hostility wears a mask of passivity -- is currently the number one source of men's problems in relationships and on the job. In Living with the Passive-Aggressive Man, Scott Wetzler draws upon numerous case histories from his own practice to explain how and why the passive-aggressive man thinks, feels, and acts the way he does. Dr. Wetzler also offers advice on:
How to avoid playing victim, manager, or rescuer to the "P-A"
How to get his anger and fear into the open
How to help the "P-A" become a better lover, husband, and father
How to survive passive-aggressive game playing on the job
Living with a man's passive aggression can be an emotional seesaw ride. But armed with this book, you can avoid the bumpy landings.

Passive Aggression Men.......2007-09-14
This book "Living with the Passive Aggressive Man" is excellent. It made me see myself and the interplay with the female was very insightful. I never realize how my behavior would play into the physhic of such a man. He needs a lot of help. Although, I have the personality to deal with it, it can be exhausting. I find myself not sharing thing, because I believe he will find something to get mad about. I'm sick of the angry and the bad behavior it is abusive. He does apologize, but not enough rarely. He doesn't have common manners. He doesn't think anything is wrong with his behavior. He is rude to people and he can never say no directly and lies so much it's funny because the lies are so stupid Stevie Wonder could see through them. I've told him he needs help and he know it but will never get it. He is too old.(56 Sept - 30, 07) His behavior is extreme and he so stotic and no sense of humor. I starting asking where did he come from? My boyfriend is all over this book. I see him in 80% of the examples given. He get angry with me and I don't even know it, then react to the anger and I'm lost and defeated and I still don't know what he was mad at. Negative all the time even when good things happen or 10 good things will be said or done and he will always focus on the negative. Not a very happy man. I would be the Rescue type girlfriend described in the book. Caring and motherly. He can be cold and never want to talk about it and will avoid at all cost. He has issues with control. He can't control his own life it is in shambles it's funny to me to think he would try to control me. The book was most insightful about all of these traits. The Passive Aggressive man is a nightmare. Run Sally Run. The Stubborness is total unreasonable. Everybody tell him he is mean. I know that it is because he is so unhappy with him self he irritate other people with his inappropriate behavior. His self esteem is low but his life is a mess. Misery Loves company and I don't want to be in the company of his misery. The family background was right too. He grew up with out a father, but he was the oldest not the youngest. Communcation with me is deploreable with the boys he good time charlie. Never seems to worry about my well being, but always tells me about his. I didn't realize how selfish he was until reading this book. It is all about him. Run Sally Run.
Describes a lot of men to a T........2007-08-25
Unfortunately a lot of men are passive aggressive. Also it is too bad that the passive aggressive personality disorder was taken off of the DSM-4 for purposes of further research. Now psychiatrists and psychologists cannot diagnose your annoying male partner or family member with the disorder.
BUT you however, can be aware of a passive aggressive man or woman. If you see in a man a PATTERN of passive aggressive behaviors listed and described in this book then you know to be cautious and probably not invest time and intimacy with that man.
Passive aggressive people are so annoying and will bring out the angries in you. So read it and learn from it before you end up in grief counseling.
I also wanted to say that women can also be very passive aggressive. I've worked with and been friends with both men and women who agree to do something merrily and then later go and do the opposite, this is a passive aggressive problem if that behavior is repeated many times without resolve. These bitter and shallow people live in their own little worlds and have little regard, respect, or value for people.
The truth shall set you free.......2007-05-19
Reading this book was a HUGE moment of clarity for me after a year and half of struggling to make my relationship with a P-A work. I was stunned at how completely dead-on the description of a P-A was in describing the man in my life. The book made me feel sane again. If you know anything about P-A men, they have a tendency to make the women in their lives feel absolutely crazy and out of control. Reading the book gave me some tools to recognize the manipulations and try to change my own responses to them. It's now a year later and I am ending the relationship. I think that if you are with a P-A who refuses to acknowledge in any way that they have issues that need addressing, you can just throw in the towel now and save yourself the heartache. The tactics that Scott Wetzler recommends for women to employ will only work if the man has some tiny crack in his psyche where reason can creep in occasionally. The book is definitely worth reading, although the message can be discouraging as few P-A men seem to really change.
Worthwhile reading.......2007-01-29
This book has been my introduction to passive aggressive behavior and it has been very helpful to me. I don't like the sexist sounding title, but the author explains that men and women can both be passive aggressive. However, he believes that more men than women display the destructive type of passive aggression, possibly because of more recent changes that have occurred in our culture-mainly the advent of women's rights and greater equality between the sexes. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the concept of passive aggression. I agree with other reviews that it is not that helpful in terms of dealing with a PA person but I think that there is no simple way to deal with them anyway.
This book is amazing.......2007-01-26
I stumbled across this book while searching the Internet for possible reasons why a relationship that was so important to me was failing miserably. This book is amazing. It describes in explicit detail the causes and behaviors of the passive aggressive (man) in this case. It is an absolute must read for anyone involved in a relationship with a pa. It gives clear cut suggestions on how to look for the signs, and how to deal with this type of person. It is very easy to understand and read. Understanding gives you a lot of power, and this book does just that. I liked it so much it fact, I wrote the author and thanked him for addressing this problem with such empathy and understanding for the partner of the pa.

Product Description
This is a very funny book. From the Foreword entitled A Guide to Apportioning Blame throughout such insightful topics as the use of aids, equipment, history, costs of the sport and physical fitness required (none of which are presented in a manner that would be recognized by readers of any other book on dressage), the reader is in for a laugh-out-loud treat. Margaret Odgers has been there and what makes her material so screamingly funny is the core of Absolute Truth that runs through the book. Eva Sandor's charming cartoons alone are worth the purchase price.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh-out-loud funny!.......2006-05-13
Anyone who has ridden dressage will find this book hilarious. After I read it, I purchased three more for my trainer and two of my fellow "DQ's". We all talk about certain passages and the silly and sometimes sad truths of the typical dressage journey. A must read!
Great read for riders of all disciplines!.......2005-01-21
What a funny book! Ms. Odgers experiences trancend the world of dressage as her experiences contained universal truths that I am sure are felt across equine disciplines.
Highly recommend it for riders of all ilks. AND it makes a greate gift!

OUTSTANDING!.......2005-06-20
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL WORKS! I BELIEVE THEY ARE FOR ANYONE FROM BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED TO ENJOY. CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE EXQUISITE DESIGNS IN THIS BOOKLET OF HERS! I KNOW I WILL BE WORKING ON AT LEAST 4 OF THEM THIS YEAR.
For experienced stitchers only...........2005-02-25
If you love Theresa Wentzler's work, this book will not disappoint you. However, the designs here are quite intricate and difficult to do. I don't know when or if I will ever do one because I found her charts very difficult to follow (and I do not have all the time in the world to do one); but her work is definitely stunning and beatiful. The work involved would definitely be a labor of love. It is the only book by Theresa Wentzler I will ever buy, however, due to the complexity of her charts.
Marvelous Collection of beautiful designs.......2002-10-30
This collection brings together some of Ms. Wentzler's most beautiful designs in a single resource for the stitcher. It also allows a re-release of previously hard-to-find, out-of-print designs Harvest Sampler and Heart Sampler.
Not all designs are difficult nor complex. However, they are all beautiful.
Good and Hard.......2002-02-16
This book is a masterpiece but not for anyone who is not extremely skilled in cross stich and with all the time in the world to work on a project. There are no easy or quick works here but if you do take on one of these projects you will have a work of heirloom quility in the end.

Book Description
This volume deals with the religious practices of the family in the ancient Babylonian, Syrian, and Israelite civilizations. On the basis of a wealth of documents from both the private and the literary realm, the book gives an exhaustive description and analysis of the rites of the ancestor cult and the devotion to local gods. The author demonstrates the role of these two aspects of family religion in the identity construction of its followers. The section dealing with Israel pays particular attention to the relationship between family religion and state religion. The emergence of the state religion under King Saul marked the beginning of a competition between civil and private religion. Though the two had great influence upon each other, the tension between them was never resolved. A study of their interaction proves to be a key for the understanding of the development of Israelite religion during the monarchic period. The book is of particular importance to biblical scholars, Assyriologists, and all those interested in the history of ancient Near Eastern religion.
