A Washington caper of fraud, blood, oil, and international intrigue with the fearless and irreverent Kate Boothe

Since sticking to her principles during the last presidential election, Kate Boothe has watched her political consulting business shrink. When she and her partner Jack are approached to do media strategy for the Essex Group, it's a ticket into the inner circle of politics, and Kate plunges in.

On her first tour of duty for the company, a jaunt that sends her to Paris, she rendezvous with a longtime friend, a reporter who just happens to be investigating her new employer until he turns up murdered. Determined to unravel the reason for his death—and to bring down the perpetrator—Kate and her partner Jack find themselves caught up in a scheme involving fraud, blood, arms dealers, and oil in the ultimate power game.

Praise for the The Latest Bombshell:
“Sassy, smart, sexy, and savvy.”—USA Today

5 out of 5 stars What Fun!.......2006-09-23

I loved this book! Kate Boothe is the most fun heroine in a long time. The story starts fast, and Mitchell keeps the pace going at breakneck speed all the way through. Just TRY putting this book down! It calls you back to keep reading until the very end, and then all you want is another Kate Boothe adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Another good book...........2006-02-17

4 out of 5 stars 19 stories, none by Norton.......2002-05-26

This volume suffers occasionally from sloppy editing, containing both grammatical and spelling errors (the latter in place names).

Allen, M.E. "Voice of Memory" Derivative of Norton's own "Spider Silk" from _Lore of the Witch World_, but with a deaf rather than blind protagonist.

Carr, Jayge "Plumduff Potato-Eye" Many would-be adventurers challenge the giant (8') Plumduff - he minds his own business, but he must be evil, right? Plumduff, sick of it, strikes up a dialogue with the youngster who's currently trying to get the nerve to challenge him, and they both learn a few things.

Coulson, Juanita "The Scent of Magic" Joa, a youngster with developing Witch-talent, belongs to a Vupsall tribe that has suffered severe losses, with no Wise Woman to teach her. While hunting for a lost puppy from the pack, she stumbles across an arcane sanctuary, that *seems* all to the good...

Crispin, A.C. "Heartspell" Branwyn Stormgerd has Witch-talent, but she doesn't *want* it - she wants to remain a farmer. And everybody knows there's an easy way to lose unwanted Witch-talent...

Friesner, Esther M. "The Weavers" Fyuru the Mosswife once took pity on a wounded man in the forest - not only healing him, but taking on human form to comfort him. She even accompanied him on his quest to retake his lands - but as his heart chilled to hold only ambition, she grew ever more weary, and finally fled to resume her old form. Now their daughter has unknowingly entered Fyuru's domain.

Green, Sharon "The Root of All Evil" - A woman with Witch-potential and a philosophical turn of mind accidentally awakens an Adept. This is more a Socratic dialogue on the nature of evil than a conventional story.

Griffin, P.M. "Knowledge" Aden, the protagonist, is a caretaker and student at Lormt (she and her brother first entered its gates on a dare as children). Now her brother is missing, after hinting at making a great discovery.

Inks, Caralyn: "The Circle of Sleep" Sequel to "Nine Words in Winter" from volume 1.

Mathews, Patricia Shaw "Falcon's Chick" The women's village of the Falconers *don't* care for their absentee landlords, and the protagonist is one of their many secrets - a crippled son. While the women's resentment of the Falconers is understandable, their tolerance of the system (and their children's ignorance of basic biology - in farm country, yet) is not.

McKillip, Patricia A. "Fortune's Children" Lyse was a tough foundling - so tough that she joined Ysledale's army during the Invader's War, and afterward remained a mercenary. She isn't trying to pass as a man, either. Eventually, though, she gets curious about her mother.

Miller, Ann; Rigley, Karen E. "Godron's Daughter" Sequel to "Stones of Sharnon" from volume 2.

Randall, Marta "A Question of Magic" Imrie is a Daleswoman who doesn't believe in magic. After all, have *you* ever seen an Old One, or met anybody who has? (See Norton's "Sword of Unbelief" in _Lore of the Witch World_ for an example of how unbelief can be put to good use.)

Roberts, K.L. "Strait of Storms" An ex-Witch has taken up residence near the Strait, playing mermaid - using illusions to lure navigators onto the rocks. Fortunately, when Grenwall volunteers to solve the problem, he thinks to ask *why* this is happening, and gets a Wise Woman's help.

Schaub, Mary H. "Candletrap" Damsel rescues a would-be heroic explorer in distress. (What is there about AVOID on the map that he didn't understand?) Good story.

Severance, Carol "Whispering Cane" Yes, this is partly derived from the ending of the Midas legend.

Waters, Elisabeth "Gunnora's Gift" Kyria, seeking Gunnora's shrine to ask for a child after eight years of a childless marriage, receives an unexpected answer.

Winkle, Michael D. "Wolfhead" Although most Dales were slow to ally against Alizon, the lord of Ellskeep, having a streak of wanderlust in his character, took many of his fighting men into the war early on - leaving Ellskeep in the care of his daughter and heir, Wylona. While quite competent to lead men in battle, she's caught in a hopeless situation when Alizon sends their war-machines to the dale in a sneak attack. The survivors must gamble that the human "wolfheads" are more to be feared than those of the Waste who have more right to such a name. Excellent story, deserves to be continued.

Woodworth, Lisa "Were-Flight" Explores the concept of females with Were abilities.

Wrede, Patricia C. "The Sword-Seller" Auridan, finding an ancient short-sword at a fair, accepts the sword-seller's offer to give his name to potential employers. And in the end, it isn't Lord Hervan, but his stepfather's niece Cyndal, who takes his hire - preferring her mother at Abbey Norstead to Hervan's household, if she can get an escort. (The tale of Lady Ysmay, mentioned in passing, is Norton's own "Amber Out of Quayth" from _Spell of the Witch World_).

It's hard to argue with success; it's even tougher to emulate it. But if you want to train like a Tour de France winner, you couldn't do much better than learning the tricks of the trade from two-time champion (1999 and 2000) Lance Armstrong.

In The Lance Armstrong Performance Program: Seven Weeks to the Perfect Ride, Armstrong teams up with his coach, Chris Carmichael (whom the U.S. Olympic Committee named 1999's Coach of the Year), to offer the ultimate insider's guide to becoming a better rider, based on the regimen Carmichael has been fine-tuning for Armstrong since the early 1990s. Noting that athletes of all levels focus best when aiming for specific goals at the end of short windows, the authors describe the performance program as consisting of "three specialized weekly training programs that build on your current fitness level" followed by a week of "recovery riding between each program." They provide an easy-to-administer fitness-level self-test in the form of a three-mile time trial (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), and they then define the key operative terms that make up the bulk of the actual training, including Tempo, HighSpin, PowerIntervals, Sprints, and Training Zone. A brief section of workbook-style pages provides readers with a user-friendly outline for the entire seven weeks.

Here is week 3 for an intermediate rider:

Though clearly the focus, the performance program itself makes up less than a third of the book. Other subjects covered include cycling equipment, essential maintenance and repair, riding in bad weather, road hazards, mental toughness, and the pros' eating habits both on and off the bike, to name just a few. What the book is not is the story of Lance Armstrong's remarkable recovery from testicular cancer (see his autobiography, It's Not About the Bike, for that). Rather, Armstrong and Carmichael have produced a detail-packed training manual, sprinkled with photographs and tales of the racing life, for those who spend a large percentage of their time on two wheels--or dream of it. --Patrick Jennings

Having decided how I would review this cookbook, I then read the other three reviews already here. Amazing that we all came away with the same impression: marvelous stuff here, not easy but delicious. I first tried the Fall Squash Soup with Chorizo and Spicy Cinammon Croutons, and it was a knockout dish. Everyone just marveled at its layers of flavor, so well blended. This is truly a beautiful book, and the regulars at her restaurant for lunch are blessed.

Thanks to this simple cookbook, my reputation in the kitchen has improved by leaps and bounds. The recipes are time consuming (for a simple sandwich) but wait until you taste them! If I want to knock someones socks off I prepare the Shrimp Sandwich with Mango Relish! The name cannot impart how delicious this dish is! This recipe alone justifies the cost of the book. (I have substituted chicken w/ equally good results.) Buy this cookbook. You won't be disappointed!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It contains recipes which soothe the soul (soups) and satisfies the palate. The recipes are easy to follow and don't require hours in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2004-12-03

What an informative, enjoyable read! Eve's expertise in the breed shines through in all aspects of this book, from the acquisition of a promising show puppy, to feeding, breeding, health and coat care. A detailed section on showing explains the UK challenge certificate system, and an excellent comparision between the UK and USA standards offers the reader a broad description of the breed.

Eve's decision to fill the book full of personal insights and experiences offers the reader a very detailed and emotive look into life with an Irish Setter. Her love of the breed is geniune, and comes across clearly at all times, particularly in the small but heart-wrenching section entitled, "At the End of the Day."

The photos are beautiful, and capture the breed from many angles.

There is a detailed section on the training of the Setter in the field, which should be fascinating even to those who have no intention of ever hunting their dogs.

This book has become one of my favourites, and is a must-have for any serious enthusiast of the breed.

This coffee-table book focuses on those inanimate objects placed in the garden to surround and accent its animate life. Divided into four clear sections, "Garden Antiques and Collectibles," "Hanging Baskets and Planters," "Garden Gates and Arches," and "Fountains and Cascades," Garden Accessories is an idea book--a resource for gardeners who've finished the difficult work of planting and now want to add flashes of originality. The photographs here are striking and clear: fountains lit up at sunset, secret gates leading to hidden meadows, wheelbarrows planted with wildflowers. Landscapes vary from high desert to soggy Britain. The point is not to admire any one garden in its entirety, but instead to study the placement of an object within a certain tableau. Garden Accessories will appeal to a wide variety of tastes, from lovers of Grecian urns to fans of elaborate birdhouses. The authors hope to help you figure out the mood you are after--before you head for the garden store and cart something home. --Emily White

                  Book Description

"Living in a cottage"...does the very thought inspire you? Turn the pages and picture yourself in today's cottage living. Head for the seacoast: a Cape Cod perched on an ocean bluff, or a quaint Gothic-Revival basking in island breezes. Then sample lakeside living, in a board-and-batten cabin or a contemporary rustic lodge. Experience the spacious skies of a country meadow, in an American farmhouse on a country road, a French stone chaumiere, or an English thatched-roof cottage. These are some of the topics that the author explores in this book. Why collect anything? Deciding what to collect, Displaying collections and Designing with collections in mind.

There were a lot of neat photographs showing different ways of displaying collections. Here are a few of those. An end table with a display of eight beaded purses.... Old tobacco tins of all shapes and sizes sitting in a beautiful ornate wooden cabinet.... A group of globes in a home library.... Old fashion postal cards in a genuine post card holder.... A huge display of small metal cars arranged in a circular fashion on a wooden table.... A large collection of snow domes in a glass display case.... A shelf of colorful cookie jars.... 23 candlesticks of various designs arranged on a mantle top.....and my favorite, a basket of rag dolls sitting under a window.

DESIGNING WITH COLLECTIBLES would be very helpful to someone in the early stages of collecting or someone just looking for new ways to showcase whatever objects that they collect.

I found this book to be fascinating, showing both traditional and more unusual ways to showcase every type of collectable - from vintage toasters to antique dolls. Recommended!

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.

Readers are invited to take apart the sample pop-ups (as long as they promise to put them back together!) to determine exactly how each score folds and where each glue point is. Instructions are somewhat advanced, but the dimensional samples and the step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made will ease the journey. David Carter and James Diaz have each created many, many pop-up books, and are passionate about their trade. So blow the cobwebs out of the geometry corner of your brain, and get to work! I love this book. It's an excellent learning tool. The almost explosive front pop-up incorporates all the elements in the book, then each one is explained and demonstrated separately. I particularly liked the noise making pop-up, which had a saw-toothed mechanism. In visiting the author's web site I found he had dies (pdf models to cut out) for the elements in the book under "surprise". I think, considering the hand made nature of the book, and production costs, its price is not unreasonable. Another good book for learning paper engineering in which you construct the models is Paper Engineering for Pop-Up Books and Cards

                    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-05

Even if you have no intention whatsoever of making a pop-up book in your entire life, this book is marvellous fun. I flip through it again and again just enjoying the fun flaps and wheels and folds. If you do intend to make a pop-up book, this has everything you will ever need for the paper engineering aspect of your project and then some. Brilliant layout, simple instructions--a treasure trove. Every possible type of flap or fold you can imagine (and some that I have never seen before) is shown in isolation so that you can immediately and easily understand its basic principles. I cannot praise this book highly enough. Buy it at once.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers lots more than it promises........2006-07-17

This, as the title says, shows a variety of elementary paper popups - the cute little folded thingies in books and cards that stand up when the page is opened. The book's a real strength that it includes an actual, working specimen of each structure it describes. Except for one or two demonstratons, the popup folds never pass the basic, and never show the incredible breadth of artistry that can go into the best of popups. Still, it's readable and gives you an unambiguous idea of how the finished product will look, work, and be assembled. From that point forward, combining ideas, adapting them to your application, and decorating the paper surface are all up to your creative expression.

But wait, there's more! This includes not just standard popup folds, but lots of little pull-the-tab, spin-the-wheel, and other bits of paper gadgetry, also in the form of working demonstrations, with variations on many of the themes.

It's a great book for the paper crafter, whether for personal enjoyment or professional inspiration. Yes, I know that the old pro will already be familiar with a lot of what's here - but that's not true for the student, and even masters might like to have their memories jogged when they're looking for inspiration. There's a lot of fun here, for both the recipient of the made thing and for its maker.

Elements of Pop Up is one of the few How To Make Pop-Ups books that features patterns for moving parts like wheel/tab mechanisms, which is why I purchased it. However, don't expect to be able to create anything extrememly fancy with this one. The examples are made of simple shapes that expect the user to expand upon them as necessary--this can be a detriment when you're trying to figure out how to alter the pattern to make something more complicated. The most useful part of the book, ironically, isn't even in the book: it's online at www.popupbooks.com, Carter's website. In the Surprise section, one can download all the patterns for making every example shown. Don't pass up buying the book, though. You'll most likely need Elements of Pop Up at your side to figure out how to assemble all your cut out pieces correctly. If you'd rather follow instructions and complete specific projects, I'd recommend Carter/Diaz's other book, Let's Make It Pop-Up! (ISBN 0-689-86508-2), which has pre-printed pictures and contains projects like Blooming Flower and Huggy Bear.

This is an ok book. However, 85% of the models can be found on the internet for free with better diagrams and pictures.
The "better" models are the modular origamis but the instructions are not very clear and the pictures have funny angles and lights...I figured them out because Ive been folding for a while but if I were just starting, I would've burned this book down.

If you were a beginner, it COULD be a good book if it weren't because of the internet, but you can find most models online.
I honestly wouldnt recommend it. Unless you have been folding for a while, you are going to get lost and miss steps. And if you have been folding for a while, you will see that only 2 or 3 models are worth your time (which is pretty bad for a whole book).

I am sick and tired of publishers cheating customers by reissuing previously published works with a different title, cover, etc. to fool the customer. Origami publishers are the worst ever about this deception.
Paul Jackson's books are issued every couple of years under a new disguise. (He makes not one cent- the rights were sold to the original publisher.) This "new" Beech title is nothing more than such a re-do of "Origami: The Complete Guide......" I have spent a lot of money only to be disappointed. CAVEAT EMPTOR!
The book is a fine book. My objection is to the fact that it is NOT a new issue, but a recycle.

This is a nice book for beginner folders: it has a nice gallery of origami models and some general information followed by a selection of different types of models. The folds are shown in full-colour photographs rather than standard diagrams - much easier for a first timer to follow, although it's hard to see what's happened in a few pictures.

If you want to buy this, do some price-matching first. This book has also been published under such titles as "Origami Handbook," "Origami : The Complete Practical Guide to the Ancient Art of Paperfolding," and as a number of short books that feature single sections of the work eg. Action origami.

                                Book Description

This volume is concerned with the great Psalms Scroll from cave 11 at Qumran as an example for the reception ("Fortschreibung") of biblical texts and books in early judaism.

After methodological considerations the scroll is examined and reconstructed entirely in its material and textual extent for the first time. Detailed analyses of the text and the structure of this work show that 11QPsa developed from the final redaction of the biblical book of Psalms. In its unique text form and arrangement of Psalms it was composed in a qumranic milieu and functions as a work for a davidic figure.

Renowned scholar and New York Times bestselling author Henry Louis Gates, Jr., delivers a stirring and authoritative companion to the major new PBS documentary America Behind the Color Line. The evolution of African American society has split into two very distinct and striking communities, according to Henry Louis Gates, Jr.-the privileged and the disenfranchised. Viewed through the lens of four intrinsic elements of the African American experience-Black Hollywood, The Black Elite, The Ghetto, and The New South-Gates examines the legacy of the Civil Rights movement, tracing the fascinating journey of black people since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Gates has done America a great service by helping to pull back the curtain on African American experiences and voices. I would recommend any of his writings.

Dr. Gates' book isn't a strict scholastic piece; instead, this is a collage of sketches of African-American life in the U.S. For this reason, this book is a great read. There is no overarching thesis, no trendy sociological analysis. In this book, Dr. Gates is more concerned with how diverse the day to day experiences are in the African-American community and what can be learned from individuals' personal stories, struggles and thoughts. He removes himself from the limelight and allows those he interviews to have center stage. This book is very human and very real. In an academic culture that likes broad, over-generalized theories, this book is a challenge to bring our thoughts back to the individuals who really struggle with societal problems and what life looks like outside the academic bubble. This book has a pulse and should be read by all those looking for the faces and the humanity behind the academic theories.

4 out of 5 stars A good read with several points lacking.......2004-05-19

Despite the title, this book doesn't seem to go very far beyond the color line. Although the venerated author does tackle class, a very important issue, the book doesn't seem to draw the obvious conclusion. Here we see many of the familiar terms like "white money" or "white society" and yet this isn't America in 1950. Today's America is no longer white, in fact society at large is far more Hispanic and Asian then it ever has been. And yet there is still the racist stereotype that anything wealthy is white and that to succeed people must conform to `whiteness'. Such is the lie and such is the sad state of affairs that even the many educated and successful people interviewed in this book seem incapable of getting past.

I was most unhappy not to se Condi Rice interviewed since I think her take on these things would have been most profound. Nevertheless this was a good start, finally admitting that class sometimes trumps race. The problem was that that conclusion didn't seem to draw this factuality out. Poverty is endemic, its not racial, it's a sickness and a culture. The culture of the trailer park mirrors the culture of the ghetto, and although racial lines may be drawn, they have little to do with success. Success is also a culture and it turns out that wealth breeds wealth. Thus the interviewees and this study should have drawn that idea out more, asking people to do what Booker T. asked them to do so long ago, namely, to succeed despite everything. Dr. King asked us to judge people by the `content of their character rather then the color of their skin' but it seems that in some points made here skin color is still paramount. And unless people heed Dr. Kings words, we will still be having `conversations beyond the color line' in 50 more years.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read, yet thought provoking too.......2004-04-05

The media often tries to appear balanced and diverse by bringing on somebody to present the "black point of view." As this book of dialogues amply demonstrates, there is no such thing...there are only African Americans with opinions as diverse as the individuals themselves.

Gates wondered "how far have we come since the Civil Rights Movement." To get some sense, he interviewed movers and shakers like Jesse Jackson and Vernon Jordan, but also those the Great Society left behind, like Kalais Chiron Hunt in the Cook County Jail and residents of Chicago's infamous Robert Taylor Homes . Familiar entertainment figures like Bernie Mac, Alicia Keys and Don Cheadle weigh in, with refreshingly candid interviews not commonly found in Hollywood hype. We meet activists on the front lines, like Lenora Fulani who uses theater to teach kids how to succeed in business. And we meet everyday people like Dierdre and Jerald Wolff who joined the new Southern Migration by moving to an affluent, predominantly black community in Atlanta, and Lura and Chris, a biracial couple living in Birmingham..

I'm always impressed with Gate's ability to capture his subject's words without imposing his personality...he shares his own story in the introduction. Each of the 39 stories is told with clarity and fluidity; you read one and can't resist moving right into the next.

A thought provoking book and for many white readers, a glimpse of black America not represented elsewhere.

I was very delighted to hear that Henry Louis Gates was releasing another book, so as usual I grabbed the first copy at my job. I read this book in two days, and I found it very interesting. I liked the way he divided the community into four sections. The sections that affected me the most were the Ebony Towers and Chicago's South Side. I loved the Ebony Towers section because those are the people that I look up to most in my life and they really inspire me, especially Colin Powell. Chicago's South Side was the saddest thing I have read to this date. It was the magnifying glass into what is wrong with the African-American community today. I have to agree with the previous poster that stated Gates needs to really think about classes being separated as the root of the problem because I disagree also. I have lived in a working class urban area since I was 10. I have never lived next door to a doctor, lawyer, or a corporate executive. That fact has never discouraged me from maintaining high academic standards, or from striving to do my best in all areas of my life. Why? Because I have parents! I have parents that are involved in every aspect of my life. They took time to expose me to things beyond the hood, they nurtured me, and they were hard on me. Because of their determination combined with mines, their daughter will be a college graduate in May 2004. I believe any set of good parents would do that for their child. That is the biggest problem in the community today. Where are all the parents? In the Chicago chapter, I saw nothing but dependency and hopelessness. I can't blame anyone but them, not the black doctor that decided to move to the suburbs. Instead of focusing on why successful African-Americans do not live by less fortunate African-Americans, focus on the ways they do try to give back to the community. I know that many do not, but there are a large number who do. If anyone wants to make it out of the ghetto, they can if they really wanted to. Like my title said, the issues are deeper than this book can ever get. This was a nice effort and I appreciated the honest dialogue. I look forward to seeing the documentary.
P.S. Kudos to John Singleton for giving the NAACP the finger. They are so consumed with Hollywood's artistic endeavours, that they forget about the ordinary citizens that really need them.
