19 stories, none by Norton.......2002-05-26
Allen, M.E. "Voice of Memory" Derivative of Norton's own "Spider Silk" from _Lore of the Witch World_, but with a deaf rather than blind protagonist.
Carr, Jayge "Plumduff Potato-Eye" Many would-be adventurers challenge the giant (8') Plumduff - he minds his own business, but he must be evil, right? Plumduff, sick of it, strikes up a dialogue with the youngster who's currently trying to get the nerve to challenge him, and they both learn a few things.
Coulson, Juanita "The Scent of Magic" Joa, a youngster with developing Witch-talent, belongs to a Vupsall tribe that has suffered severe losses, with no Wise Woman to teach her. While hunting for a lost puppy from the pack, she stumbles across an arcane sanctuary, that *seems* all to the good...
Crispin, A.C. "Heartspell" Branwyn Stormgerd has Witch-talent, but she doesn't *want* it - she wants to remain a farmer. And everybody knows there's an easy way to lose unwanted Witch-talent...
Friesner, Esther M. "The Weavers" Fyuru the Mosswife once took pity on a wounded man in the forest - not only healing him, but taking on human form to comfort him. She even accompanied him on his quest to retake his lands - but as his heart chilled to hold only ambition, she grew ever more weary, and finally fled to resume her old form. Now their daughter has unknowingly entered Fyuru's domain.
Green, Sharon "The Root of All Evil" - A woman with Witch-potential and a philosophical turn of mind accidentally awakens an Adept. This is more a Socratic dialogue on the nature of evil than a conventional story.
Griffin, P.M. "Knowledge" Aden, the protagonist, is a caretaker and student at Lormt (she and her brother first entered its gates on a dare as children). Now her brother is missing, after hinting at making a great discovery.
Inks, Caralyn: "The Circle of Sleep" Sequel to "Nine Words in Winter" from volume 1.
Mathews, Patricia Shaw "Falcon's Chick" The women's village of the Falconers *don't* care for their absentee landlords, and the protagonist is one of their many secrets - a crippled son. While the women's resentment of the Falconers is understandable, their tolerance of the system (and their children's ignorance of basic biology - in farm country, yet) is not.
McKillip, Patricia A. "Fortune's Children" Lyse was a tough foundling - so tough that she joined Ysledale's army during the Invader's War, and afterward remained a mercenary. She isn't trying to pass as a man, either. Eventually, though, she gets curious about her mother.
Miller, Ann; Rigley, Karen E. "Godron's Daughter" Sequel to "Stones of Sharnon" from volume 2.
Randall, Marta "A Question of Magic" Imrie is a Daleswoman who doesn't believe in magic. After all, have *you* ever seen an Old One, or met anybody who has? (See Norton's "Sword of Unbelief" in _Lore of the Witch World_ for an example of how unbelief can be put to good use.)
Roberts, K.L. "Strait of Storms" An ex-Witch has taken up residence near the Strait, playing mermaid - using illusions to lure navigators onto the rocks. Fortunately, when Grenwall volunteers to solve the problem, he thinks to ask *why* this is happening, and gets a Wise Woman's help.
Schaub, Mary H. "Candletrap" Damsel rescues a would-be heroic explorer in distress. (What is there about AVOID on the map that he didn't understand?) Good story.
Severance, Carol "Whispering Cane" Yes, this is partly derived from the ending of the Midas legend.
Waters, Elisabeth "Gunnora's Gift" Kyria, seeking Gunnora's shrine to ask for a child after eight years of a childless marriage, receives an unexpected answer.
Winkle, Michael D. "Wolfhead" Although most Dales were slow to ally against Alizon, the lord of Ellskeep, having a streak of wanderlust in his character, took many of his fighting men into the war early on - leaving Ellskeep in the care of his daughter and heir, Wylona. While quite competent to lead men in battle, she's caught in a hopeless situation when Alizon sends their war-machines to the dale in a sneak attack. The survivors must gamble that the human "wolfheads" are more to be feared than those of the Waste who have more right to such a name. Excellent story, deserves to be continued.
Woodworth, Lisa "Were-Flight" Explores the concept of females with Were abilities.
Wrede, Patricia C. "The Sword-Seller" Auridan, finding an ancient short-sword at a fair, accepts the sword-seller's offer to give his name to potential employers. And in the end, it isn't Lord Hervan, but his stepfather's niece Cyndal, who takes his hire - preferring her mother at Abbey Norstead to Hervan's household, if she can get an escort. (The tale of Lady Ysmay, mentioned in passing, is Norton's own "Amber Out of Quayth" from _Spell of the Witch World_).

It's hard to argue with success; it's even tougher to emulate it. But if you want to train like a Tour de France winner, you couldn't do much better than learning the tricks of the trade from two-time champion (1999 and 2000) Lance Armstrong. In The Lance Armstrong Performance Program: Seven Weeks to the Perfect Ride, Armstrong teams up with his coach, Chris Carmichael (whom the U.S. Olympic Committee named 1999's Coach of the Year), to offer the ultimate insider's guide to becoming a better rider, based on the regimen Carmichael has been fine-tuning for Armstrong since the early 1990s. Noting that athletes of all levels focus best when aiming for specific goals at the end of short windows, the authors describe the performance program as consisting of "three specialized weekly training programs that build on your current fitness level" followed by a week of "recovery riding between each program." They provide an easy-to-administer fitness-level self-test in the form of a three-mile time trial (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), and they then define the key operative terms that make up the bulk of the actual training, including Tempo, HighSpin, PowerIntervals, Sprints, and Training Zone. A brief section of workbook-style pages provides readers with a user-friendly outline for the entire seven weeks.
Here is week 3 for an intermediate rider:
Though clearly the focus, the performance program itself makes up less than a third of the book. Other subjects covered include cycling equipment, essential maintenance and repair, riding in bad weather, road hazards, mental toughness, and the pros' eating habits both on and off the bike, to name just a few. What the book is not is the story of Lance Armstrong's remarkable recovery from testicular cancer (see his autobiography, It's Not About the Bike, for that). Rather, Armstrong and Carmichael have produced a detail-packed training manual, sprinkled with photographs and tales of the racing life, for those who spend a large percentage of their time on two wheels--or dream of it. --Patrick Jennings

This coffee-table book focuses on those inanimate objects placed in the garden to surround and accent its animate life. Divided into four clear sections, "Garden Antiques and Collectibles," "Hanging Baskets and Planters," "Garden Gates and Arches," and "Fountains and Cascades," Garden Accessories is an idea book--a resource for gardeners who've finished the difficult work of planting and now want to add flashes of originality. The photographs here are striking and clear: fountains lit up at sunset, secret gates leading to hidden meadows, wheelbarrows planted with wildflowers. Landscapes vary from high desert to soggy Britain. The point is not to admire any one garden in its entirety, but instead to study the placement of an object within a certain tableau. Garden Accessories will appeal to a wide variety of tastes, from lovers of Grecian urns to fans of elaborate birdhouses. The authors hope to help you figure out the mood you are after--before you head for the garden store and cart something home. --Emily WhiteBook Description
"Living in a cottage"...does the very thought inspire you? Turn the pages and picture yourself in today's cottage living. Head for the seacoast: a Cape Cod perched on an ocean bluff, or a quaint Gothic-Revival basking in island breezes. Then sample lakeside living, in a board-and-batten cabin or a contemporary rustic lodge. Experience the spacious skies of a country meadow, in an American farmhouse on a country road, a French stone chaumiere, or an English thatched-roof cottage. Then try an Adirondack mountain log home, or Swiss Alpine chalet. Alongside the entrancing photos, you'll see how to choose a setting and a style, then design, build, and furnish it. Helpful tips show how to decorate for comfort and personal expression. Don't miss the outdoor living ideas for screened rooms, porches, and decks. Even if you live in a city, you can bring the romance of cottage spirit to your life.

--Thoughts and ideas about collecting--.......2003-03-01
There were a lot of neat photographs showing different ways of displaying collections. Here are a few of those. An end table with a display of eight beaded purses.... Old tobacco tins of all shapes and sizes sitting in a beautiful ornate wooden cabinet.... A group of globes in a home library.... Old fashion postal cards in a genuine post card holder.... A huge display of small metal cars arranged in a circular fashion on a wooden table.... A large collection of snow domes in a glass display case.... A shelf of colorful cookie jars.... 23 candlesticks of various designs arranged on a mantle top.....and my favorite, a basket of rag dolls sitting under a window.
DESIGNING WITH COLLECTIBLES would be very helpful to someone in the early stages of collecting or someone just looking for new ways to showcase whatever objects that they collect.

Elements Of Pop Up: A Pop Up Book For Aspiring Paper Engineers

Believe it or not, the first known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books--but only for adults. In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. The rest, as they say, is history. Now aspiring paper mechanics (creative engineer-artists who create dimensional and movable books, otherwise known as pop-ups) can learn the how-tos and wherefores of this marvelous craft. From tip-ons to dummies to glue knock-outs, all the intricacies of pop-up production are outlined and explained.Readers are invited to take apart the sample pop-ups (as long as they promise to put them back together!) to determine exactly how each score folds and where each glue point is. Instructions are somewhat advanced, but the dimensional samples and the step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made will ease the journey. David Carter and James Diaz have each created many, many pop-up books, and are passionate about their trade. So blow the cobwebs out of the geometry corner of your brain, and get to work! (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Here at last is the definitive book on how to make a pop-up. Every aspect of the creation of a pop-up, known as paper engineering, is clearly and thoroughly covered. All types of parallel folds, angle folds, wheels, and pull tabs are accurately detailed verbally and visually, flat and in dimension. Also included is a history of pop-ups and a step-by-step photographic essay on how a pop-up is made from start to finish. This guided tour is perfect for aspiring pop-up creators, paper engineers, students, and appreciators of this unique art form.

Psalmen- Und Psalter-Rezeption Im Fruhjudentum: Rekonstruktion, Textbestand, Struktur Und Pragmatik Der Psalmenrolle 11Qpsa Aus Qumran (Studies on the Texts of the Desert of Judah)
Ulrich Dahmen Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004132260 |
Book Description
This volume is concerned with the great Psalms Scroll from cave 11 at Qumran as an example for the reception ("Fortschreibung") of biblical texts and books in early judaism. After methodological considerations the scroll is examined and reconstructed entirely in its material and textual extent for the first time. Detailed analyses of the text and the structure of this work show that 11QPsa developed from the final redaction of the biblical book of Psalms. In its unique text form and arrangement of Psalms it was composed in a qumranic milieu and functions as a work for a davidic figure.

America Behind the Color Line: Dialogues with African Americans
Henry Louis Gates Manufacturer: Warner Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0446532738 |
Book Description
Renowned scholar and New York Times bestselling author Henry Louis Gates, Jr., delivers a stirring and authoritative companion to the major new PBS documentary America Behind the Color Line. The evolution of African American society has split into two very distinct and striking communities, according to Henry Louis Gates, Jr.-the privileged and the disenfranchised. Viewed through the lens of four intrinsic elements of the African American experience-Black Hollywood, The Black Elite, The Ghetto, and The New South-Gates examines the legacy of the Civil Rights movement, tracing the fascinating journey of black people since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Customer Reviews:

A good read with several points lacking.......2004-05-19
I was most unhappy not to se Condi Rice interviewed since I think her take on these things would have been most profound. Nevertheless this was a good start, finally admitting that class sometimes trumps race. The problem was that that conclusion didn't seem to draw this factuality out. Poverty is endemic, its not racial, it's a sickness and a culture. The culture of the trailer park mirrors the culture of the ghetto, and although racial lines may be drawn, they have little to do with success. Success is also a culture and it turns out that wealth breeds wealth. Thus the interviewees and this study should have drawn that idea out more, asking people to do what Booker T. asked them to do so long ago, namely, to succeed despite everything. Dr. King asked us to judge people by the `content of their character rather then the color of their skin' but it seems that in some points made here skin color is still paramount. And unless people heed Dr. Kings words, we will still be having `conversations beyond the color line' in 50 more years.
Seth J. Frantzman
A pleasure to read, yet thought provoking too.......2004-04-05
Gates wondered "how far have we come since the Civil Rights Movement." To get some sense, he interviewed movers and shakers like Jesse Jackson and Vernon Jordan, but also those the Great Society left behind, like Kalais Chiron Hunt in the Cook County Jail and residents of Chicago's infamous Robert Taylor Homes . Familiar entertainment figures like Bernie Mac, Alicia Keys and Don Cheadle weigh in, with refreshingly candid interviews not commonly found in Hollywood hype. We meet activists on the front lines, like Lenora Fulani who uses theater to teach kids how to succeed in business. And we meet everyday people like Dierdre and Jerald Wolff who joined the new Southern Migration by moving to an affluent, predominantly black community in Atlanta, and Lura and Chris, a biracial couple living in Birmingham..
I'm always impressed with Gate's ability to capture his subject's words without imposing his personality...he shares his own story in the introduction. Each of the 39 stories is told with clarity and fluidity; you read one and can't resist moving right into the next.
A thought provoking book and for many white readers, a glimpse of black America not represented elsewhere.
