Laconic Joe Pickett returns to his slightly offbeat duties in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains in C. J. Box's Savage Run. Joe is called to the scene when an exploding cow kills a famous ecoterrorist, Stewie Woods, and his bride of three days, who were peacefully spiking trees. A visit to the cow's pugnacious owner leaves Joe defensive, angry, and curious: Why doesn't the rancher ask any questions about the bizarre accident that happened on his land? Then Joe's wife, Marybeth, begins receiving phone calls from her high-school boyfriend-the peculiarly healthy-sounding Stewie Woods. Stewie may or may not be alive, but his old pal Hayden Powell and other environmental activists are all turning up deceased in strange circumstances. As the body count climbs, Joe tries to sort out the bad guys, the good guys, and the truly dead guys in this sometimes funny, sometimes angry sequel to Box's award-winning first novel, Open Season. Box depicts the spare beauty and cussed individualism of the intermountain West with the sure hand of a seasoned writer. --Barrie Trinkle

Customer Reviews:
I love Box, but I don't love this book.......2007-07-14
I *loved* Open Season, and I certainly like the way C.J.Box writes, and I also loved the first half of Savage Run. But, I'm sorry, the plot contained too many wildly unbelievable coincidences and dei ex machina for me. Amazon guidelines and common decency prevent me from listing them, but they caused my suspension of disbelief to disintegrate completely, and I was so disgusted that I could only skim the last bit of the book.
Having said all that, I'll still read his next book, because C.J. certainly has talent. But with this book I felt much the same frustration I feel after seeing a thriller movie that has so much promise and then tanks at the end: don't authors or screenwriters let someone read the book (or see the movie) before publication, so they can find out if the story seems to fall apart and become a comic book at some point? If you want us to suspend disbelief and be completely into the story, then the story must be believable on some level.
Box still gets three stars from me because I like his writing, but *please* work out the plots a little better!
Great read!.......2007-06-29
If you like the outdoors and the West you'll love this one. A real page turner! Hated for it to end!
Savage Run.......2007-05-10
Great writer who once again came up with a great book. It's the only thing I can get my hubby to read.
Better in concept than execution.......2006-01-18
Savage Run starts off on a note worthy of Carl Hiaason - a cow explodes and blows up Stewie Woods, environmental extremist, and his bride. The book ends with a good dose of Zane Grey as the protaganist and his companions are chased to an impassable canyon by a deranged killer. In between, two serial killers take out several well-known treehuggers in particularly humiliating ways. All in all, an entertaining concept for a mystery.
What I did not like about this book was the writing, which I thought needed polish. The author seems most interested in portraying the earnest game warden Joe Pickett, a good guy but prone to costly mistakes. The serial killers are well developed also. But many characters have been drawn straight from central casting - the bad guy lawyer, the sheriff who wants to write off the crime and be done with it, the pretty wife who throws a hissy fit and stamps off to her room. In addition, parts of the book are thoroughly predictable. Will Joe forget to take the evidence and later find that it's disappeared? Is the wife upset because she was involved with Stewie in the past? You could answer without reading the book.
Another problem for me was the descriptions of the crime scenes. Although they include glaring clues, Box expects the reader to accept them as unsolvable. Whether you go along depends upon your tolerance for the highly improbable. Such as authorities wondering if the charred victim set the fire himself. Yeah. First he died, then he poured the gasoline and lit it.
Although I finished this book, I felt it didn't live up to its hype. Mine is a minority opinion though; the other members of my book club loved it.
Run to the Store and Get This!.......2005-09-11
C.J. Box's debut novel Open Season was so good I immediately looked for the sequels. Savage Run the next in the Joe Pickett series although a little bit predictable in parts maintains the high quality of the original masterpiece. The Carl Hiaasen style characters continue in Savage Run with extreme environmentalists, arrogant trophy hunting rich ranchers who have politicians and officials in their pocket and surreal criminals.
In Savage Run environmental guerrilla warfare against developers, ranchers, loggers and hunters organisation One Globe leader Stewie Woods is continuing his vandalism and destructive ways against those pilfering the environment when he is blown up along with his new wife by a bomb strapped to a cow. The cow is one of Jim Finotta's an arrogant rich and powerful rancher who as Joe finds out when he visits him is not opposed to shooting game out of season, cutting off their heads as a trophy and leaving the rest of the animal to rot in the wilderness. Soon other environmental lawyers, activists and other prominent pro wilderness people's deaths join Stewie Woods on the obituary list. An organisation long thought to have died out called The Stockman's trust has hired two killers to restore the world to the way they think it should be.
If you haven't already done so read Open Season. In fact it is a good idea to read that novel before this one as parts of that story are given away in Savage Run. Also if you haven't done so check out Carl Hiaasen novels which are similar to Box's but set in Florida instead of Wyoming.

Customer Reviews:
My kids sleep like champs.......2007-09-06
This book really helped both of my children to become good sleepers from the earliest ages. We used it with my daughter at 7 months and she was sleeping through the night within a week. We stared even earlier with my son (3 months) and he was putting himself to sleep within 10 days. They are now school aged and sleep like adults (by themselves, with lights out, and until the morning). I see the craziness that some other parent still go through (kids needing them in the room until they fall asleep, kids coming into their beds at night) and I think "thank goodness this is not me." I think teaching kids to sleep is like teaching them to do anything--it needs some guidance, but they will catch on to what is expected of them. I think using this book is one of the best parenting decisions we ever made. Yes, you will have a few unpleasant nights of crying, but you are saving yourself years of trouble! I highly recommend this book.
Great resource.......2007-08-24
Sleeping Through the Night is a book all new parents should buy. We were having trouble getting my daughter to sleep, but read this book and used the suggestions (see page 100!). We consistently followed the bedtime routine steps and within a few days our 4 month old was going to bed without issue. As predicted by the author within 2 weeks she was sleeping through the night. She also goes back to sleep in the middle of the night and down for naps in her crib MUCH better. My only criticism is that the book could have been edited better, there are parts that are repetitive and it seems choppy. Another great part is that there are many anecdotes which are very pertinent and helpful.
I HIGHLY recommend this gentle, but effective bedtime and sleeping method. Friendly advice... we started on a Thursday so we would have the weekend to work through issues.
Helpful.......2007-07-23
This book gives new parents a better understanding of infant sleeping patterns and sleep needs. We followed many of the recommendations (such as the same one toy each night for baby to focus on when falling asleep) for our now eight-month-old son and now we all sleep pretty well through the night.
vomiting is fun???.......2007-07-16
I've read this book twice, and nowhere do I see the "vomiting is fun" quote. This book is VERY compassionate toward both babies and their caretakers. There are numerous studies showing that babies who soothe themselves to sleep are more independent and less fussy later in their development. My sister never read this book but used these methods from her own common sense and had healthy sleepers and happy, well-behaved children. This book repeatedly advises not to leave your baby cry for an extended period. I am due in November and am set to use these methods with confidence, knowing I'm doing the best thing for my child.
love it.......2007-07-02
recommend highly!! all 3 kids have been helped by this book and are great sleepers

Compare to How to Dry Foods.......2004-02-02
This has more methods of drying (including sun-drying), it has information on pretreating foods.
How to Dry Foods on the other hand has metric to american conversion, and it tells how long specific foods last while dry.
If you want methods buy this book, if you want specific facts, buy How to Dry Foods. Personally, I'm buying this one.
Similarities to previous out of print Garden Way Book.......1997-05-10
This book will be a happy surprise for those of you who are looking for the out of print and hard to find "Garden Way's Guide to Food Drying" by Phyllis Hobson. This is basically the same book, with all the tips and hints for drying vegetables, fruits and herbs, but with even more recipes than the out of print book.
Both the author and the publisher are the same.

This is it. If you are looking for a book that covers everything snake with lots of pictures, you have found it. This has general information and husbandry, taxonomy, and goes through all the snakes, not just the popular pets and famous venomous ones. It also has information on responsible pet ownership. And it is enjoyable to read!
The Atlas of Snakes of the World.......2002-03-30
Wonderful! It is not just an atlas, it is very informative and very readable. I am just beginning a serious study of snakes, and this is a fantastic adult introduction. Snakes : The Evolution of Mystery in Nature is also a great book, but I suggest reading this first.
The Atlas of Snakes of the World.......2000-06-03
Lots of pictures but little real information on individual species. Snakes : The Evolution of Mystery in Nature is a better choice for those looking for more indepth info.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos.......2002-05-09
Some of the most beautiful lifeforms on this planet are illustrated in this book, and when reading it, one can only feel more amazement and respect for this order of reptiles. The colors, patterns, and life styles of snakes are varied enough to keep a serious student of herpetology busy for a long time. One can only envy the photographer who took the pictures in this book.
The book is not just a photo collection however, for the author also includes a discussion of their taxonomy, natural history, biology, eating habits, diseases, reproduction, and how to care for them in captivity. The most interesting discussion in the book was on taxonomy, for it is very controversial. The binomial system is employed in the book, but the author explains that a trinomial classificiation becomes appropriate when certain characteristics are unable to justify a separate classification as a species. The North American Common Kingsnake is offered as an example of this, having at it were seven subspecies.
The top 10 most beautiful snakes in the book:
1. Trimeresurus wagleri p. 569
2. Chondropython viridis p.41
3. Diadophis punctatus punctatus p. 257
4. Oxybelis fulgidus p. 356
5. Ahaetulla prasina p. 312
6. Dendraapsis augusticeps p. 412
7. Bitis nasicornis p. 476
8. Naja nigricollis p. 429
9. Drymarchon corais couperi p. 111
10. Lampropeltis zonata p. 164
This book is unfortunately out of date with incorrect facts........1999-07-24
John Coborn has written some very good books but this one gets the two stars from the brilliant photos. The species doesn't get their english name by the pictures, only by taxonomy, and those are some times incorrect. Incorrect maximum lengths for the species some times as well. John Coborn could have done it better.

An introduction to scrap quilting.......2001-05-25
This book introduces scrap quilts to someone who is not sure yet about scrap quilting. It includes some nice basic patterns with each quilt shown in a color plate. There is some adivce on how to decide on a color scheme for your quilt. Another section shows different layout possiblities for some of the patterns in the book.
Not a faboulos book, but a solide one.
the price is right/lots of basics.......2000-03-26
As a new quilter I have checked out piles of books from the library and then purchased some. I renewed this book twice! I t is really cheap, and has a good selection of scrap quilt samples especially the attic windows, which I could only find ain a few books! It offers several variations for each pattern. Only thing confusing was sewing instruction for bowtie quilt-it says to pivot and my experienced quilting friends said NO NO don't . but still for $7 bucks it's a quilt book bargain! another excellent book for beginners is quilts quilts quilts! a complete guide...

Fine biography of a great story-teller........2003-11-28
The simplest description of this book is that it is a short biography of renowned hispanic writer Isabel Allende, translated from the Spanish by Margaret Sayers Peden. It is based on a series of taped interviews between Zapata and Allende made at Zapata's instigation after many years of cajoling, following the beginning of their friendship in the 1980s. It was Zapata, a professor of Latin American literature at San Jose State University, who convinced Isabel, then a new best-selling author living in Venezuela and also newly divorced, to include California in a lecture tour promoting her popular novels in the USA for the first time. In their first meeting at San Jose it was Celia who introduced Isabel to the man who would later become Isabel's second husband, William Gordon. This in turn led to Isabel moving her home from Venezuela to California. The interviews that became this book occurred at regular intervals over a whole year in a rented hotel room near San Francisco Airport, half way between San Jose and Isabel's new home in San Rafael. In one interview Isabel says, "Why do I write? Because I am filled with stories that demand to be told, because the words are choking me, because I like and need to write, because if I don't write my soul dries up and I die." I like Allende's books, and I like her personally even more after reading this compelling biography. It's an easy read, and also includes a helpful chronology of Isabel's complicated life from 1942 to 2002.

Isabel Allende: Vida y espiritu .......2006-11-18
Un apasionante libro sobre la vida a la obra de la autora mas destacada de las letras latinoamericanas contemporaneas. From the supplier: Maryse Conde and Isabel Allende present in their writings the important role the family plays in restructuring the social order. This biological nucleus, despite and because of its flaws, offers itself as a dynamic point of departure from which a more inclusive social structure may be formed. Conde's 'Tree of Life' deconstructs genetic heritage mainly through its heroine, who is of mixed blood. Allende's 'House of Spirits' similarly presents the importance of accepting racial mixtures. Both books also present women as the ones who can restructure the family and, consequently, the society.
