Book Description

Now for the first time in one captivating volume, here are the first three mysteries featuring J. A. Jance's most popular and enduring character, Seattle homicide detective Jonas Piedmont Beaumont. It's a trio of tales steeped in the atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest that is sure to remind everyone that Jance is a master of modern suspense fiction.

In Until Proven Guilty Beaumont finds himself investigating the murder of a five-year-old girl. But his own obsessions and demons could prove dangerous companions in a murky world of blind faith and religious fanaticism as he discovers that he himself is the target of a twisted passion ... and a love that can kill. In Injustice for All Beaumont's well-earned vacation becomes a waking nightmare as he's forced to comfort a beautiful blonde after she discovers a dead body on a Washington beach. Suddenly a lethal brew of lust, madness, and politics threatens to drag the dedicated Seattle cop into the path of a killer whose dark hunger is rapidly becoming an obsession. And in Trial by Fury a naked, dead body is found lying in a Dumpster. What's most shocking is the manner in which the man died -- he was lynched. The victim, a high school coach, has left behind a very pregnant wife with a very dangerous secret. And a sixth sense developed over twenty years on the job tells Beaumont that this investigation is going to the lethal extremes of passion, lies, and hatred.

"Until Proven Guilty". The victim was no more than five years old; the weapon a Holly Hobbie gown used to strangulate Angela "Angel" Barstogi. Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont may have fifteen years of murder cases under his belt, but whenever a kid is involved it is tough. He and his partner newcomer Ron Peters concentrate on the mother Suzanne and the cult leader Pastor Michael Brodie of the Faith Tabernacle. However, as he struggles to understand how Michael has such control over the "sisters", Beau, as J.P. is called, is sidetracked when he meets and falls in love with Anne Corley. Though Beau. does not come out as professional as he does in later tales because he spends the middle of the novel sniffing after Anne rather than the case, the partnering between he and Ron cleverly start to form, storm, norm, and perform.

"Injustice for All". Beau is on vacation at Rosario resort when he heard the scream that sounded like a bad teen slasher flick. Ginger Watkins was sobbing while Sig Larson of the parole board attending a seminar lies dead on the beach. Though a hundred plus miles from his jurisdiction, Beau takes charge of the crime scene only to learn that the husband of his witness is Darrell Watkins, running for lieutenant governor and that the victim's wife accuses said witness of an affair with her now dead spouse. The vacation shot to hell even though Beau is attracted to his star witness. In an early appearance, Beau conducts an intriguing investigation that is somewhat sidetracked by his attraction to Ginger, but he show more of the depth of caring that highlights his later tales as he makes inquiries though outside his jurisdiction.

"Trial by Fury". The corpse of Mercer Island High School basketball coach Darwin Ridley was found in a dumpster; he was executed state-style. Beau investigates starting with the pregnant wife Joanna who says her husband never comes home following a defeat as he needs time to recover and the team just lost at the finals. The suspects are shockingly everywhere including the spouse, but who could have done a state style execution seems juts outside Beau's grasp. This is the Beau that readers adore as he is filled with flaws, gets no respect, but keeps working in between drinks to solve the case.

These three 1980s Beaumont tales introduces the audience to Beau, his partner, his journalist enemy, and some of the lovers in his life while providing a grim realistic po0lice procedural. SENTENCED TO DIE is a terrific way to meet one of the better long running police procedurals.

In 1985, Barbara Hambly published Dragonsbane, the story of how "a bespectacled amateur engineer who collected lore about pigs" and his mage-born mistress went south to slay the black dragon Morkeleb but ended up allying with him to save the kingdom from a much more terrible enemy. Dragonshadow continues the story of John Aversin, the Dragonsbane, Jenny Waynest, the Witch of Frost Fell, and Morkeleb.

It's four years later, and John and Jenny find themselves facing mages and dragons controlled by demons who have trapped their souls. One of the captured mages is Ian, their 12-year-old son. Jenny and Morkeleb are also at risk, and to save them all John bargains his own soul as the forfeit if he cannot pay a demon's price.

Hambly creates a believable setting and compellingly real characters without sacrificing the sense of a truly magical world, both beautiful and deadly. This is not yet another predictable sword and sorcery tale. This story concerns the temptations of power and the cost of resisting evil. Grief and loss are inescapable. Unlike Dragonsbane, however, Dragonshadow promises readers another book in which, perhaps, the protagonists will find peace and healing. --Nona Vero

Book Description

Lord John Aversin--with the help of his mageborn wife, Jenny Waynest-- has fought and defeated two dragons, earning the title of Dragonsbane. But there are creatures more terrifying than dragons. Demonspawn from a dark dimension have learned to drink the magic--and the souls--of mages and dragons alike, turning their victims into empty vessels. And now they've stolen John and Jenny's mageborn son, twelve-year-old Ian.

In desperation, John seeks the help of the eldest and strongest dragon: Morkeleb the Black. But the demons have allies, too: a vast army poised to plunge the Realm into civil war. In the coming struggle, Morkeleb will sacrifice what he values most. Jenny will question everything she trusts and believes in. And John will embark on a perilous quest for the only things capable of defeating such powerful demons--even more powerful demons . . .

4 out of 5 stars New Country.......2004-12-03

I had read Dragonsbane so long ago and considered it a beautiful stand-alone novel. Over the years I must have read that book at least three more times, and it occupied a very special place in my heart.

When Dragonshadow appeared I was shocked. Could it be? A sequel to Dragonsbane? I rushed out to buy it the next day, eager to shut myself in for a day or two and delve into it from beginning to end. As I read I was happy to reconnect with the characters of the first novel; they were like long lost friends I had not seen in so long, but something started to occur to me as I read: Morkeleb's importance had lessened since I read of him last. Now Hambly's Winterlands series expanded to introduce us to the Skerries of Light, where droves of dragonkind traveled the skies, and showed us how frail they were to possession by demons. In this story, my favorite black dragon seems so much weaker. He is no longer the sensual shadow of focus in Hambly's world, but rather one of the "main characters" in an effort to save the world from the clutches of an evil mage named Caradoc. The dark politics and macabre scenes of the demons at play with their victims gave this storyline an entirely different feel, so much that it felt mutated beyond all recognition as having ties to the original Dragonsbane.

Having said this, Dragonshadow is a beautifully written book. The darkness and mood is a welcome emotional texture. Where Morkeleb weakens in importance another new character rises to capture our imagination: Aohila, the Demon Queen. She's bad, she's beautiful, and she's a demon trapped behind a black mirror who John Aversin must bargain with. Aohila's charm as a character is rich, like a delicious deep red wine. Every time I read of her I wanted more, and Hambly wisely keeps her a rare character throughout the series.

In concluding, lovers of the original Dragonsbane would do well to read this book, but brace for a new world first. Empty your need for the old story to continue, and get ready for a wilder, darker journey into the heart of human temptation and suffering.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and great!.......2004-08-30

I won't bore you with the plot line again! I loved the first book, but I loved this one even more. The characters are wonderful, and true to themselves. It has a dark feel, with dark things happening. I don't like goody-goody stories, and as in life, bad things happen to good people. Hambly does a wonderful job of evoking feelings. My heart went out to John and Jenny. I could barely wait for the next book to come out to see how it all came out.

I am a huge Hambly fan, and I think there has been only one book of hers (that I have read) that I didn't care for. The rest are all worth the read! In fact some of my favorites are falling apart and I have to search used books stores to replace them! Now I buy them all in hardcover. :)

3 out of 5 stars Ms. Hambly is an excellent writer, and THAT is the problem.......2003-02-10

Barbara Hambly is a master of her craft. She's excellent creating "atmospheres" for her books and stories. She's so skilled in wrapping her readers in the "essence" of the worlds she creates, in making her readers "feel" the environment of where her characters live, that sometimes that is her downfall.
The atmosphere in "Dragonshadow" is not a pleasant one. Her characters are immersed in a battle, not for their lives, but for their very souls, against demons of the worst kind. Demons that can possess a living person, and use his or her body to do horrible acts of violence, while the person itself remains trapped, and is forced to see, and LIKE, what the demon is doing.
This is not a story for the faint of heart. It isn't pretty, and it's so well written, that you really don't want to finish it.
It's just that the plot is very good, but you definitely don't like what is happening to the characters. Let's face it: it seems that Ms. Hambly is taking revenge against her two main characters, Jenny and John, for some unthinkable wrong they'd done to her.

But, if you can endure such torment as reading this book represents, then, when you read the next book, "The Knight of the Demon Queen", you'll know that all the torture and the uneasy feelings where worth it! (Also, when you finish "Kight of the Demon Queen", you'll be wishing you already had "Dragonstar" to finally know what the hell is going to happen to Jenny and John).

1 out of 5 stars I wish she had never written this book!.......2002-06-06

I read Dragonsbane (the first book about John and Jenny who are the 2 main characters in these stories) many years ago and really enjoyed it. When I recently found out that Barbara Hambly had written a sequel to their story, I could not hardly wait to read it. What a disapointment! I wish I had never picked up this book, and just left the characters where they were at the end of Dragonsbane. I can take some hardships happening to the characters in the books that I read, but this was terrible. I have since got the 3rd book in this series from the Library (thank goodness I did not buy it) and "skimmed" through it first to see if anything finally got better. Believe it or not, it was worse than Dragonshadow. When I do get a chance to read, I would like to finish the book and feel uplifted instead of depressed. Please pass on Dragonshadow unless you like a lot of unresolved heartache in your stories.

1 out of 5 stars Half a book.......2001-07-29

The first book in the series, Dragonsbane, was pretty good. And Ms Hambly generally writes a good book. But, in Dragonshadow, she wrote half a book. Dragonshadow has no ending, and it closes with a notice that it is continued in the next book of the series (Trilogy?). Dragonshadow is depressing. It is, sadly, a book for those who wish to wallow in the filth and misery of demons, those who wish to read of the triumph of evil.... I do hope that Ms Hambly does better in the future. Or she gets dropped from my list of preferred authors.

Judith Moore's breathtakingly frank memoir, Fat Girl, is not for the faint of heart. It packs more emotional punch in its slight 196 pages than any doorstopper confessional. But the author warns us in her introduction of what's to come, and she consistently delivers. "Narrators of first-person claptrap like this often greet the reader at the door with moist hugs and complaisant kisses," Moore advises us bluntly. "I won't. I will not endear myself. I won't put on airs. I am not that pleasant. The older I get the less pleasant I am. I mistrust real-life stories that conclude on a triumphant note.... This is a story about an unhappy fat girl who became a fat woman who was happy and unhappy." With that, Moore unflinchingly leads us backward into a heartbreaking childhood marked by obesity, parental abuse, sexual assault, and the expected schoolyard bullying. What makes Fat Girl especially harrowing, though, is Moore's obvious self-loathing and her eagerness to share it with us. "I have been taking a hard look at myself in the dressing room's three-way mirror. Who am I kidding? My curly hair forms a corona around my round scarlet face, from the chin of which fat has begun to droop. My swollen feet in their black Mary Janes show from beneath the bottom hem of the ridiculous swaying skirt. The dressing room smells of my beefy stench. I should cry but I don't. I am used to this. I am inured." Moore's audaciousness in describing her apparently awful self ensures that her reader is never hardened to the horrors of food obsession and obesity. And while it is at times excruciatingly difficult bearing witness to Moore's merciless self-portraits, the reader cannot help but be floored by her candor. With Fat Girl, Moore has raised the stakes for autobiography while reminding us that our often thoughtless appraisals of others based on appearances can inflict genuine harm. It's a painful lesson well worth remembering. --Kim Hughes

Book Description

For any woman who has ever had a love/hate relationship with food and with how she looks; for anyone who has knowingly or unconsciously used food to try to fill the hole in his heart or soothe the craggy edges of his psyche, Fat Girl is a brilliantly rendered, angst-filled coming-of-age story of gain and loss. From the lush descriptions of food that call to mind the writings of M.F. K.Fisher at her finest, to the heartbreaking accounts of Moore's deep longing for family and a sense of belonging and love, Fat Girl stuns and shocks, saddens and tickles.

“Moore's unflinching memoir sets a new standard for literature about women and their bodies. Grade:A.”

—Peg Tyre, Newsweek

—Anne Lamott

“Judith Moore grabs the reader by the collar, and shakes up our notion of life in the fat lane.”

5 out of 5 stars Fat Girl.......2007-10-01

Great little book. It will make you cry. It's really honest and sort of heart-breaking. I highly recommend this quick read little book. I loved it !!

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book I've Ever Read (or Tried to Read).......2007-09-09

This book is absolutely repulsive and pathetically sad. I am a fat woman - probably far fatter than the author of this book - and my life in no way resembles the pathetic life that is depicted in this book. Her self-loathing is repulsive and disgusting to read. I had to stop reading it after about 40 pages because I no longer wanted to give her an audience for this trash.

Fat people are one of the last groups of people that it's still "okay" to ridicule. It disgusts me that someone might read this book, think they now "know" what it's really like to be fat, and use it as ammunition for more reasons to hate fat people. I have a happy, fulfilling life that I love, and in no way do I ever let my 100 extra pounds stop me from doing what I want to do.

I think the author needs to stop writing books and find herself a good therapist. This book does a great injustice to all fat people, and to herself, who obviously needs some help in dealing with her life.

3 out of 5 stars Fat Girl.......2007-09-02

As an person of substantial size, I was interested in this book. Judith Moore does capture the trials of an overweight child trying to fit into a thin world. She certainly faces a lot of discrimination as she grows up. She is not supported by her family...only pushed further into an abyss that helps to create the fat person. The use of four letter words seems unnecessary to me, and detracts from the real story.

4 out of 5 stars A Vivid Tale of Sorrow.......2007-08-28

Moore, a known food writer struggled all of her life with her weight and self-image. This memoir opens with the warning that you're not about to read a happy book, with heartwarming lessons and triumphs. Actually, it took quite a while for the book to connect with this reader, as Moore drudges through her appetites and her struggles.

She writes vividly of the food she likes, and the diets that she's lived, and is constantly living. Food has become tied to every significant memory of her life--from rejection to joy to family. Some foods she can no longer eat because they propel her so far into her painful past.

Her story gains momentum when she takes us back to the beginning and her scarred childhood. Raised by a mother who'd flit off and leave her with her angry grandmother or her pleasantly gay uncle, Judith didn't know her father until she was a mother herself. Her life was one episode of abuse after another, the verbal cruelty a living horror--from her mother, her grandmother, and her classmates alike. She remembers with clarity the handful of people who were truly kind to her throughout these years, and remembers too, the guilty feelings she had about the bad things she would do.

Fat Girl is the story of a woman with a very real struggle, who shows the power of consequences when a parent fails to do their job. It is both riveting and terrifying to read her sad story. Judith Moore died about a year after her book was published. Grade: A-

5 out of 5 stars Does she really hate herself?.......2007-08-11

Loved this book. But it begs the question; did she really hate herself? Judith describes her bloated body almost with glee. She seems to delight in vivid descriptions of her body and the way it moves and shimmies, even the negative comments she receives. But I admire her candid writing and my heart goes out to anybody that big who simply cannot lose weight no matter what they do. I would liked to have learned more about Uncle Carl.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice book, but it does have some errors.......2007-06-23

I bought this book after a trip to Chile, and wanted to use it to recreate some of the food we tasted there. I enjoyed reading the author's descriptions of Chilean food, especially the cultural references to Chile. I've been quite happy with most of the recipes I've tried, especially the Pastel de Choclo. However, both the recipe for Manjar, and the recipe for Brazo de Reina have problems, and I would recommend against trying them. I've written to Hippocrene Books, asking them to contact Mr. Joelson for corrections, but so far I've not heard from them (which I consider a BIG negative for a cookbook author). If/when I do hear from them, I'll update this review. Chris Braunlich

5 out of 5 stars Tasting Chile: A Celebration of Authentic Chilean Foods and Wines.......2006-03-14

A well put-together colection of traditional Chilean recipes, along with a healthy smattering of Chilean atmosphere in the form of sayings and literature.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book to use IN Chile, too!.......2006-01-04

This book has been a great resource as a gringo living in Chile. My girlfriend and I have made several of the recipies, particularly from the seafood section, a particularly useful resource. Our meals have been delicious. We are making food that at Chilean restaurants costs 4 or 5 times more than it costs us to make. And our food is usually better! The pisco recipies in the back are really useful, too. If not living in Chile, Joelson also provides useful potential substitutes.

The book is well researched, and you can learn a lot about the history and development of Chilean cuisine. Having the Chilean words for the ingredients has been invaluable here, too.

This book has really helped my girlfriend and I embrace Chilean cuisine, as we stand around the oven baking reyeneta or stirring up pisco sours. Instead of living in Chile and making familiar dishes with Chilean food, we are making Chilean dishes with Chilean food. It is really great.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome addition to personal and family cookbook collections.......2004-10-11

Another of the outstanding regional and ethnic cookbooks from Hippocrene Books, Tasting Chile has as its focus the culinary traditions and dishes found in the South American nation of Chile where 2,500 miles of coastline offers and deep fertile valleys offer up a wealth of fish, fruit, vegetables, and more. Of special interest is the chapter dedicated to Chilean wines, and a Spanish-English dictionary of Chilean fish and shellfish. From Milcao Relleno con Chicharrones (Potato Pancakes Stuffed with Pork); to Porotos con Riendas (Cannellini Beans and Pasta); to Filete Serenense (Beef Sauteed in Papaya Sauce); to Leche Asada (Caramel Pudding), Tasting Chile is a welcome and recommended addition to personal and family cookbook collections for those who enjoy exploring the tastes and cuisines of other lands and other cultures.

    5 out of 5 stars Joelson's Celebration is Delicious.......2004-10-01

After years of lunching at a Chilean restaurant, I finally decided to research why I was always yearning for this cuisine. 'Tasting Chile' greatly pleased my most refined palate and I've begun trying my hand at cooking Chilean cuisine at home.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2007-10-01

Love, love, love this book. I garden nowhere near the same amount, but I am in zone 6 too -- so the advice is spot on for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference - great gift.......2007-07-05

I really appreciated the extensive research the author did for each section - she separates the folklore from the things that have been tested and documented, but presents both. I also like the suggestions and options she gives...if you want to follow a pre-designed plan you may, or you can pull together your own combinations that appeal to you or that work better for your situation. I have read my own copy cover to cover many times and have given this book as a gift to several like minded people. The two aspects of her system that really appeal to me are the reduction in weeding and the principle of "no sprays"...I really disklike the idea of putting poison on my food!

5 out of 5 stars This is the book you want.......2007-06-27

Perfect. I've looked at a number of books on companion gardening and this is the one I'd recommend. Friendly, easy to read with nice illustrations and photographs. This is a book written by a woman who loves gardening for people who love gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the organic home gardener!.......2007-06-06

I read this book from cover to cover. The author's style of writing is conversational and very easy to read. I bought a couple of other organic gardening books but I liked this one the best. Her love of nature and plants really comes across. I understand now how the balance in nature takes care of pests with some planning from us. She shares a lot of really good, easy-to-do tips on how to garden organically. I've implemented many of her ideas in my own garden and can see them working already. Most of all, this book has made me aware of how important the insects and bugs in my garden really are. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to garden organically.

2 out of 5 stars How does common sense get published?.......2007-05-24

Great Garden Companions may be a suitable book for some, but I found it very disappointing. The book is aimed toward a very general audience--one without an organic gardening, scientific or ecological background--and is consequently dumbed down, brief and incomplete. The title is misleading, and really just seems like an excuse for the author to talk about her own garden (and which plants she likes to put together, seemingly on a whim). It should be marketed as a gardening journal or introduction to organic gardening for kids, if anything.

Hardly any useful information about companion planting is found in this book--what little exists is there without any sort of explanation or reference. Even common information about well-researched companion plants is missing. The book is, instead, about which plants look nice planted together, have been grown together for centuries, or allow you to conveniently pick crops. The author provides detailed information about which plants she likes to group together in her own garden, including planting maps, but never explains why. It is a book littered with old wives' tales and inaccurate and unresearched information, with just a little bit of useful information that is generalized and brief. And then a bunch of other stuff that has nothing to do with companion planting, which may actually prove useful if you've never read a decent gardening book before.

The book itself is rather poorly written and targeted toward the lowest common denominator of gardeners, but the photographs are nice and the author's practical, organic and naturalistic approach are right on. The book stresses ecological balance within the garden, but doesn't include much information outside of the realm of common sense and common knowledge, and I expect more out of a book.

        Book Description

During the first months of 1839, David Roberts toured the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem, Palestine, the coasts of Lebanon, and Baalbec, returning to England to produce a series of moving and delightful lithographs detailing the region's splendors.

As with the companion volume, Egypt: Yesterday and Today, this oversized, full-color volume contains the original plates of the first edition, arranged for the first time in chronological order, with commentary and extracts from Roberts' journal.

Each illustration by Roberts, moreover, is paired with a photograph that depicts the same subject and setting more than a century and a half later.

The Holy Land offers an unforgettable taste of Roberts' technical and artistic virtuosity. This is a stirring form of time travel, in search of new, yet ancient, discoveries in one of the most fascinating regions on the face of our planet.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Production Major Disappointment.......2007-02-10

I ordered both volumes, "Egypt, Yesterday and Today" and "The Holy Land, Yesterday and Today". Nothing could have ever destroyed the beauty of David Roberts work as this aweful production. Most plates are printed on two opposite pages in such a way that disrupts the sweeping landscape effect intended by Roberts. A third grade student could have seen that printing the book sideways in a landscape fashion would have allowed each plate to be reproduced on one page as in integral display exactly the way that Roberts intended it to be, with the text recent photograph on the opposite page.

It is fascinating how stupidity and terrible production can destroy magnificent artwork.

        5 out of 5 stars A magnificent book, of a special artist.......1999-01-23

This book pairs gorgeous lithographs made by David Roberts circa 1800 with photos of the sites as they appear today. Another volume "Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered : The Prints of David Roberts (1796-1864)" has somewhat better and larger reproductions of the lithographs, but lacks the photos. Personally, I think the photos are interesting, but "Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered : The Prints of David Roberts (1796-1864)" does a somewhat better job of capturing the magic of David Roberts.

          Book Description

In 1838 and 1839, painter David Roberts traveled throughout Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem, and Palestine. The lithographs based on the sketches and paintings he produced during these trips won him fame that endures to this day. This exceptional slipcased package presents, in two volumes, full-color plates of his original artwork, accompanied by commentary and extracts from his journals. In a fascinating comparison between the lands that Roberts depicts and their modern-day incarnations, White Star has juxtaposed new photographs from travel photographer Antonio Attini with sketches of the same site drawn by Roberts, revealing the same view, more than a century and a half later. These pairings, accompanied by an insightful text by Fabio Bourbon, provide readers with a unique perspective on changes that have occurred in these legendary regions. The two volumes are supplemented by The Life, Works, and Travels of David Roberts, a concise yet comprehensive biography of David Roberts.
