Any book that Sharyn McCrumb writes is going to be an excellent read. Grab a cuppa "joe" or tea, put your feet up and enjoy! Just be sure you have plenty of time because once you start, you are going to want to finish at one reading. My Grandmother was gifted with "The Sight" and my mother is also gifted with "The Sight" and so I always enjoy the books that include "Rattler" and "Nora".
Unusual Weaving of History Into Fiction.......2007-02-22
Sharyn McCrumb's She Walks These Hills is set in eastern Tennessee in the early 1990s, a time before cell phones when people found it easier to disappear into the mountains. McCrumb builds her storylines around a fictionalized historical event of a young woman kidnapped by Indians in the late 1770s, bringing that idea into the modern-day world of an escaped convict and an understaffed police department searching for him.
There are many different characters populating this story, most of whom are colorful and interesting as brought to life by McCrumb's expert writing. The story moves back and forth between the situations and characters, giving us sympathetic looks at "hardened criminal" Harm Sorley, aspiring policewoman Martha Ayers, Ph.D. candidate Jeremy Cobb, local deejay Hank the Yank, hick teenager Sabrina Harkryder, and local wisewoman, Nora Bonesteel. There are several other characters involved as well, and all this jumping around can be a bit unsettling at times. Expecting more of an historical element apparent based on previous readers' comments, I was a little disappointed in that particular aspect of the novel. The mystery is good, however, though a bit transparent.
This is an easy read, and one that would easily fulfill anyone's appetite for a good whodunit. Things get tied up neatly by story's end, and that's the most important thing in a book of this nature. Enjoyable.

It took me a couple of chapters to get into the "rhythm" of the storytelling. After that I had a hard time putting the book down because I needed to know what happened to the individual characters. The author did a good job of describing the characters and the locale. I enjoyed it very much.

if you want to learn how to relax by not doing yoga then this is the book for you! this book describes ways to relax by breathing and lying on the floor using towels and blankets to make your self more comfortable.. which seems more like a great way to fall asleep than yoga.

I was hoping for a yoga book with pictures that allows me easy and safe postures -- maybe modified -- of the standard beginner yoga. Instead I got pictures - a book full of them -- of people lying on the floor on their backs sleeping. Waste of a book.

Mostly ideas for marinades and basting sauces.......2006-08-14
I got this book mainly because I love ribs, but its really not the all-inclusive Everything Ribs book that it first appears. Try Steve Raichlen's ribs book for a rib encyclopedia if that's what you want.
Don't get me wrong, there are several dozen marinade and basting sauce recipes for asian, caribbean, latin, mediterranean and american style basts, sauces, and marinades, but all the cooking instructions, without exception, are exactly the same from recipe to recipe. There is a short but informative section at the front describing cooking methods, including oven roasting, grilling, and indirect heat, and descriptions of different types of ribs.
But, the drawback to this book is that all the types of cooking aren't necessarily suitable for all the types of marinades or sauces, since all the recipes describe the exact same preparation, you don't really know if the sauce is better served on the side, as a baste, or as a marinade; therefore I think many of these recipes are geared toward oven roasting rather than grilling or smoky barbecue-type preparations.
Truth In Advertising - Great.......2006-08-12
This is the third book on cooking ribs that I have purchased in attempts to "keep up with the Jones" on our BBQ block.
The methods, techniques and tips on preparation and cooking are right on, and straighforward enough for the average Joe to grasp.
The sauces, described as too foo foo (paraphrased) by another reviewer, are awesome, and I haven't tried one that we didn't love. Make sure you are shopping in a well stocked spice store or outlet, as some of the ingredients aren't as readily available (at least in Ohio) as I would have thought (Cardomon pods?).
Word of caution...the recipes don't make themselves, and are a tad bit complex. Budget some time to concoct, and you will be very pleased with the results.
My favorites are the Cowboy Rub (for you spicy Chipotle fans) and the Tandori, which is also great on chicken. Only complaint, as pointed out in a previous review, is that the book will not remain open when laid out on the counter.
You will not be disappointed with this book!
If you REALLY like ribs - Get this book!.......2002-06-09
This book is a true rib lover's treasure. The first 33 pages (nicely photo-illustrated) have everything you need to know about types of ribs, meat preparation techniques and cooking methods. After that, it's nothin' but ribs baby!
Be ready to make a tough decision though - which recipe to do first. There are mouth-watering pictures of almost every recipe, and so far, we have not found one we didn't like. This is a cookbook that rib lovers will want to work their way through from cover to cover this summer.
My family's favorite so far is the Carolina Barbecued Ribs (bottom photo - back cover). These have both a rub and a mop and will take you to straight to "Hog Heaven". (If you have little ones or don't like spicy, cut back on the chili powder for this one. It's pretty hot.)
I own LOTS of rib recipe books and this one is by far the best. It's packed with at least one full summer of the best rib-tasting you'll ever enjoy, but you'll return to the recipes in this book again and again.
Ribs, Ribs, and more Ribs.......2001-07-12
I become skeptical when I see a word such as "Great" in the title of a book. It is either immodesty or exaggeration. I am happy to report that, in this case, the word fits very well.
Each recipe is complete unto itself. It includes the rib type, rib preparation, recommended cooking technique, a rub, the mop, sauces, serving suggestion, etc. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. Kudos to the the kitchen testing staff. Of note is that most recipes can be done simply in an oven, and do not not require a smoker.
This is a good example of a cookbook that focuses on only one subject. It does a very good and very thorough job covering its subject.
My complaint here is that the book will not lay open flat in the kitchen when you are doing the recipes.
The recipes are reliable, and you will love the flavors. Highly recommended.
Great BBQ.......2000-09-26
We try a new recipe each week out of this book and haven't found a bad one yet -- they're GREAT! The marinades are equally good on chicken and pork tenderloin.

The receipes are all original, easy to follow and foolproof.
The personalities and pictures are fun to read as you page through the sections and find the restaurants that contributed their own unique ideas which are featured throughout. I have made my own original sweet hickory sauce for baby back ribs for 20 years. It's been refined over time and a family favorite. I tried the Piquant Ribs from this book and I swear I'll never make mine again!

This is one of the best barbecue books ever. I use several of the recipes (Apple-sauced chops, twice baked potatoes) regularly and have tried most of the other recipes at least once and none have disappointed. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to add some variety to their grilling.

Debbie Mumm Delivers Again.......2004-05-14
Any quilt book by Debbie Mumm can be counted upon to deliver certain things: lots of charming designs organized by theme so you can mix and match, excellent instructions, and inspiring photos. This book also gives you numerous small projects you can make for gifts, some really quick decorating ideas, and a nice section on organizing your holiday preparations.
In addition to the specifically Christmas designs with Santas, angels, nutcrackers, and such, there are projects with hearts, tools, fish, apples, and animals which could be made at any time of year. The general directions are excellent. While there are no projects for full-sized quilts, the book has enough information and enough attractive quilt blocks that you could easily come up with one yourself. Contrariwise, if you have a book of quilt blocks and need directions for putting them to use in gift and household items, this book will also fill that need.
Quilters need this book for their Christmas shelf, and people who might like to dabble in quilting can use it to get started.
