Book Description

Greg Rucka has earned a devoted following for his edgy Atticus Kodiak thrillers, Finder, Keeper, and Smoker. Now, in an electrifying new suspense novel, Rucka puts us in the heart and brain of Kodiak's friend and lover, Bridgett Logan, a young woman living life on her own terms—and living it on the edge. Shooting at Midnight.

It began with a promise made to a friend, made when they were both teenagers. Now, years later, the friend wants to collect. All Bridgett Logan has to do is keep her word and the vow she made: Commit a murder. Now two men are desperately trying to find Bridgett.

One to save her. The other—to kill her.

4 out of 5 stars Rucka's not afraid to show his protagonists' dark sides.......2007-07-31

Perhaps, after penning three novels featuring bodyguard Atticus Kodiak (Keeper, Finder, and Smoker) author Greg Rucka decided it was time for a change of pace. Unable to abandon the character totally, however, Rucka chose to focus on Kodiak's love interest, private investigator Bridgett Logan. The result is a hybrid of sorts, two parts Logan, one part Kodiak, a literary effort somewhat reminiscent of a TV spin off. Fortunately for Rucka, the experiment worked: he now has two successful characters to work with, each providing a unique perspective on the other.

Bridgett is a recovering junkie, someone who wakes up each day battling her addiction, which she sardonically refers to as "Mr. Jones". Thus, she's not sure how she feels when she receives a call from Lisa Schoof, another ex-junkie, requesting a meeting. Recalling a debt she owes Lisa, however, Bridgett agrees to meet.

Lisa informs Bridgett that she's just had an encounter with her ex-husband, a drug dealer named Vinnie Lark, who burst into her apartment demanding money. Realizing she didn't have any, the volatile Lark beat her, telling her she'd better come up with some cash if she wanted to stay healthy. Distraught, Lisa wants Bridgett to help her kill him. Bridgett suggests and implements a less drastic plan, merely frightening the pathetic loser enough to ensure he keeps his distance. Proud of the way she handled things, Bridgett isn't allowed to savor her achievement for long--Vinnie turns up dead three weeks later, and Lisa is identified as the chief suspect. Bridget, suspecting Lisa has stolen a gun from her apartment, believes that just might be the case.

With Lisa in jail, Bridgett does some digging, discovering that Vinnie was in trouble with a drug lord named Alabacha. Despite her suspicions, Bridgett decides she must go undercover in Alabacha's organization--her goal, prove Lisa innocent, or learn enough about Alabacha's operation to cut a deal for her freedom. The decision is one of the hardest she's ever had to make, as she knows the temptation to use will be with her the entire time.

Shortly after entering the underworld, Bridgett disappears from sight. She has a back-up plan, however, involving Atticus Kodiak. Using information gleaned from a package delivered to him by Bridgett's sister Chastel, Kodiak soon picks up on her trail. What he finds at the end of that trail is not pretty - Bridgett is using again, and in even deeper trouble than before; it will take all her stamina and ingenuity to dig herself out.

What makes this book such a pleasure to read is Rucka's brutal honesty. Never reluctant to show his characters' darker sides, Rucka takes it several steps further here. Bridgett is stubborn, reckless, and unforgiving, an addict constantly one needle away from relapse--while reading, you'll often wonder why Atticus and company even bother with her. Remarkably, Rucka does indeed manage to arouse readers' sympathies, as we realize that Bridgett's heart is in right place, even though her head usually isn't. Rucka also does a great job of depicting the stress his characters feel; readers ride the same emotional waves that buffet Bridgett and Atticus.

In addition to superior characterization, Rucka has also mastered the art of the cliffhanger, practically coercing readers into starting the next chapter. Combine these talents with his terse, exacting prose, breakneck pacing, and engaging plot and you get one of the best hard-boiled reads you'll ever experience.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite in the Atticus series.......2007-05-02

This was my first Rucka book. When I purchased it from Borders I had no idea it was part of a series. I just wanted to read about a tuff chick and that's what I got in Bridgette Logan. It's the book I'll pick up every year to read again. It's gritty but full of heart and keeps me on the edge even when I know the end result. Ms. Logan is one of my favorite characters ever. Yes she has her flaws but she's got heart under that hard shell she uses to cover it up. After reading this I went back to get the whole story of Atticus and Bridgette and am now an Atticus fan as well. Though no one can compare to Bridie for me and I hope she gets another book all her own. If hearing about the streets and drugs bother you then put it away. This isn't for the faint of heart and you will feel the pain of the character. Well done Mr. Greg Rucka.

4 out of 5 stars Meet Bridgette Logan.......2003-11-04

It seems to me that Greg Rucka has really hit his stride with this, the 4th and I think, the best so far in the Atticus Kodiak series. It's deeply moving and occasionally depressing in it's true to life issues.

The story is initially told from private investigator Bridgette Logan's viewpoint. Until now we didn't know a lot about Bridgette other than she was tattooed, body pierced and constantly ate altoids and lifesavers. Her past was filled in with a lot of detail, bringing her fully to life and promoting her to one of the main players in the series.

Bridgette is asked by a friend for protection from her abusive estranged husband. The husband is heavily into the drug business, a world in which the friend is desperate to escape. Bridgette agrees to help, but in doing so, puts herself at risk of losing herself to an addiction she had fought hard to overcome.

This is a poignantly told story that deals with the dark world of the drug addict and the drug supplier and the constant battle with addiction. This is a terrific addition to the series with the character development of Bridgette Logan a real plus.

3 out of 5 stars Weakest when he deviates from Atticus.......2003-09-14

Greg Rucka has been writing suspense novels for about 7 or 8 years now, up til now focusing on the curiously named Atticus Kodiak, and bodyguard and security specialist who lives and works in New York City. This fourth book isn't narrated by Atticus, except for an interlude in the middle. Instead, we're told the story by Atticus' sometime lover, Bridget Logan. We've met her in previous books, but when Rucka lets her tell her own story, it turns out that there's more to her character than Atticus has seen before, and it all comes out as this book progresses. She's a recovering heroin addict (which Atticus didn't know) and has a very checkered past, with many problems that are exacerbated by her addiction. And she also has friends, one of whom she's dedicated to helping, even at the risk of her own life.

I don't typically like books about addicts or drugs. Frankly they give me the creeps, and this book, in those sections anyway, gave me the creeps in spades. I also found the character of Bridget, once we see what's going on inside her head, to be less appealing and more appalling than she was when she was Atticus' girlfriend, through his eyes. She's stubborn, not very honest, annoyingly self-centered, and at times downright stupid. These two things detracted from what was otherwise a worthwhile book; I still enjoyed it though, and Rucka manages to make an ending to the story that surprised me, and pleased me a bit more than I thought it would.

4 out of 5 stars Revitalized by a junkie.......2003-02-02

A new narrator and focus adds vigor and staying power to this series. The reader is hooked early and stays for the ride. A real good read. Let's hope this continues. Hit me with another shot.

3 out of 5 stars 2nd in the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series.......2007-07-31

The second in the Fafrhd and the Grey mouser series. Includes the following stories:
      The Circle Curse
      The Jewels in the Forest
      Thieves House
      The Bleak Shore
      The Howling Tower
      The Sunken Land
      The Seven Black Priests
      Claws From the Night
      The Price of Pain-Ease
      Bazaar of the Bizarre

Most are pretty good; the best are probably 'Thieves House'and 'Claws from the Night'. But to be honest I don't really think fantasy works in a short story format. Horror and sci-fi yes, but not fantasy. Most of these stories seemed rushed. Fantasy, at least to me, requires a little bit of color and backstory.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow....Just, WOW!!.......2007-05-22

It's a shame that in order to find non-formulaic fantasy, you mostly have to do your searching at the very beginnings of the genre. Fritz Leiber doesn't need a three book deal to tell a great story, and in fact being a master storyteller seems to have been nothing more than a trivial feat to his ever pranking genius.
Disguised as pulp fiction, here is an intricately simple Sistine Chapel of fantasy fiction, each chapter an enjoyable stand-alone tale and yet a statement of literary symbolistic skill and an intrinsic part of the larger book and plot as a whole, all at the same time!
What's more, you'll see the two reoccuring heroes Fafhrd and/or the Grey Mouser undergo character change and development in every single tale; no matter how he uses them, Leiber never fails at making these two personalities grow and flourish. The authors characterization is more amusing and perhaps even keener than that of the others in the triumvorate of fantasy of which he is a part (Tolkien, Howard, and Leiber), and is even reminescent of Brian Jaques and perhaps even Charles Dickens.
Token run-on sentences are an aquired taste, but much appreciated when you get to know them, and Leiber famously switches styles like a mad maniac; the result is a rolicking journey describing its moods and settings with grammatical choices as well as poetic and sleezy descriptions. Here you will find the influence of modernism on fantasy, while finding the source of inspiration for what we have come to know as sword and sorcery.
Imagine a young and reckless Conan as a sort of medieval rock star who's hanging out with a sorceror thief played by Johnny Depp in an episode of the Twilight Zone that's set in Tomothy Leary's 1960s Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and you'll be getting a glimpse as to what awaits you in the world of Nehwon.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of S&S.......2005-09-19

This is, in my opinion, the best of Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, and by that rationale, some of the finest swords and sorcery around. This particular collection contains several of Leiber's earliest and most vibrant tales, including 'Jewels in the Forest', 'The Bleak Shore', 'The Howling Tower', 'The Sunken Land' and 'Thieves' House' as well as excellent later works such as 'Claws from the Night' and 'Bazaar of the Bizarre'. Unlike some of the other books in the Swords series, there's really not a weak tale here; 'The Circle Curse' and 'The Price of Pain Ease' are probably the weakest in the collection, being somewhat sketchy, but even those don't fall too far off the mark and are naturally written in Leiber's consummately beautiful prose. In addition, the sheer variety of tales here are sure to provide something to suit all tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Most Underappreciated Fantasy Author.......2004-03-28

Poor Fritz Leiber. He has never truly received the credit he deserves for fostering the fantasy genre. Along with the old Conan stories and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, this is amongst the most influential works of fantasy fiction.
Fascinating worldbuilding, intrigue and exciting characters abound in these tales, all told with Leiber's exceptional artistic skills. Not only are the plots and personalities compelling, but Leiber has a magical rhythm to his storytelling and descriptions. This is one of the few stories that is on my "reread" list.

Pick this up and you'll love the stories--and when you look at the copyright date of these tales, you'll come to appreciate just how much Leiber has affected the fantasy authors that have come since.

5 out of 5 stars These two beat batman n robin.......2004-02-01

Fritz coined the term "Sword and Sorcery" He is one of the great grand masters of heroic fiction and his stories deliver with brass and style. He has creative genius combined with an appreciation fo pacing and the exotic. If onyl hollwood in 2004 could learn from him..... alas.

This author is not a copycat like Terry Brooks, and comes as close as any to Robert E Howard, but tends to throw in a bit more social interaction.

The series are gems, get them all today.

Fafhrd is a northerner an ice barabrian while the grey mouser is a urban---fast as a cat and a bit or a magic user.

They take on animated dungeons and sorcerers galore, find and lose love----and generally take you along for a grand old origional time.

No rehashing of tolkien[in a crayy way ] like Terry Goodkind
No barfish unrealisticness like Thieves World were politics can trump bigtime magic users on a given day.
Not goofy like MYTH series[although myth series can be entertaining]

Just good appealing sword n sorcery adventure.

GOOd Show Fritz-----The fact that he does not get more press is a crime-----I don't get it-----he needs to havce far more fan apprecaition sites.

I had only been on my pump for 2 weeks when I read this book. It showed me many things I would need to make this pump work best for me. I don't think we can EVER learn enough about ourselves, or diabetes. Since I have to live with it, this book enabled me to equip myself with the knowledge needed to get the most benefits out of being on this insulin pump.
Do yourself a favor and read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, well written and REAL!.......2005-09-05

What in informative book! It covers just about every aspect of pumping you can think of, and instead of spelling it out in solely medical jargon it let you know the true story.
I am hoping that my son will be 'pumping' soon and have read this book so I know where we are going and what to expect. We already carb count to manage his Diabetes and are feeling really hopeful.
I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about a pump, anyone who has a pump already and doesn't own copy of this book and to close relations of the 'pumper' to enhance their knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Take Control of DM with a Pump the Essential Reference.......2005-06-10

As a young Internist, this book proved to be essential in my understanding of diabetes. Searching through my more commonly used references to include Internal Medicine and Endocrinology Textbooks I was unable to find a concise summary of the information and recommendations necessary to manage my patients with pumps. The 500 rule and the 1800 rule were just vague concepts found in obscure management articles and discussions with other providers. I did not have the benefit of a certified pump trainer or diabetic nurse educator. But with this reference as a guide I was able to develop a management plan. In 3 short months I dropped my patient from a HgBA1C of 9.4 to 6.3. Where there were previous highs in the 400's there are just now slight deviations from desired values. This reference and the bolus wizard on the Medtronic pump is all that one needs to demystify the management. And of course you and your patient needs to be motivated and dedicated.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning tool and reference.......2002-04-22

On the advice of my PA, I read the book before going on the pump in October 2001 (22 years after my diagnosis with Type I diabetes). The book is written extremely well and provides clear and concise coverage of the almost every aspect of pump therapy. The authors highlight considerations to make before going on the pump, as well as circumstances you will encounter after beginning pump therapy. The book offers explanations and calculations to figure total daily dosages and advice on how to change dosages for exercise, patterns of high and low bg's, etc. The material included in the book is really valuable when you begin working with your doctor, PA, etc, to help you know what questions to ask. I felt like I had more confidence and knowledge in the transition to pump therapy. "Pumping Insulin" helped me to better manage the pump and my diabetes as soon as I walked into the doctor's office for my initial pump appointment. And for those that have already started pumping, the book's a great reference tool to have on hand.

      5 out of 5 stars Must-have reference for pumping........2002-02-04

We got this book in late March, 2001, shortly after our then-6 year old son who has Type 1 diabetes started pumping insulin. This reference explains so well how short-acting insulin is used in the body, how to calculate for it during exercise, how to make adjustments to the basal rates....it save our pump trainer many late night calls. It was a lifesaver in helping us get through the insulin pump learning curve faster. Only thing it doesn't handle in-depth enough is "surprise" infusion set changeouts & sensitivity to Humalog. This book helped us understand how to take better care of our son.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2007-09-24

I was put off buying this book because of two bad reviews that speak very poorly of it. But then I happened across it in a book shop and thought it was an amazing book. The recipes are wonderful and delicious. They are simple to prepare, modern with traditional elements, and divided into seasons. This is exactly the type of Japanese cookbook that I have been looking for and I am so happy with my purchase. It has modern takes on sushi, tofu and tempura as well as seafoods...with everything prepared from scratch and beautifully presented.
This book would suit the trendy modern person that is into healthy upmarket Japanese cuisine - it is the best on the market of it's type that I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars Shunju: New Japanese Cuisine.......2007-05-10

This is a wonderful book to own...and give as a gift, which I have done several times. The text explaining the cuisine philosophy of Shunju's owner, Takashi Sugimoto, the exquisite sense of design - architectural, table, book - and breathtaking photography make this book a treasure to have and share.

      1 out of 5 stars A Hyperbolic Hoax.......2006-07-05

The book seems to be based on the untenable premise that Shunju, a not very good chain of izakayas, are some of Tokyo's finest restaurants. This is just not true and though I live in Japan and am blissfully ignorant of the hype surrounding Charlie Trotter, the man has revealed himself as either shameless, or an ignoramus in an embarrassing introduction in which he claims Shinju has launched a culinary revolution in Japan--trust me it is not even on the radar here. The food at these places is not very good and the book is very badly written and edited, but it must be said that the restaurants and this book are very well designed and photographer Kawana has taken some excellent photos.

5 out of 5 stars Not a piece of junk, but look before you buy.......2006-02-14

Charlie Trotter may be super hyped, but don't let that dissuade you from picking this one off a shelf and at least look at it first. I was turned off when I misunderstood an earlier review stating that "Both authors are not chefs but designers..". While this is true, the chefs who performed these amazing dishes mini bios are in the back of the book. I think there were 4 different chefs. Many of the recipes are "sublime" to say the least, and some of the ingredients are almost impossible to find in most of the US. For example fresh bamboo shoots, matsutake mushrooms, and kinome sprigs. This book is probably useless for the casual reader, but someone immersed or interested in the culture and cuisine will find it a creative reference. I should know, I'm a Japanese-trained Chef working in the US. For other power references more with more accessible ingredients look to works by Thomas Keller "Bouchon" and Alain Ducasse's work. Pick one up and flip through it first to see if it's useful to you.

      5 out of 5 stars JUST WONDERFUL!!!.......2004-07-11

There are more than enough reasons to pick up this book if you have any interest in crows or birds in general or even seeing a good example of descriptive biological studies, however one point missed by others are the beautiful illustrations in this volume that are well above average for a science book.

There are very few books about Corvids, and even fewer based on North American research, but this wonderful volume is a solid step in the right direction that is both well informed while also personable, leaving one to hope that future volumes or at least more research on these birds will result.

Any Corvid enthusiasts should purchase this book without hesitation as it is a relatively inexpensive and irreplacible contribution to the literature.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed observations of corvid behavior.......1999-03-31

With a keen observer's eye and a flair for marvelous prose, Kilham has written a book that is not only an important resource for researchers in behavioral biology, but also a delightful read for any nature lover.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......1999-03-03

I thought that this book was very informative and easy to read. I research on corvid communication and even found the book to have VERY important information. Anyone interested in birds in general should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Educational and Enjoyable and AWSOME.......1998-02-12

This book illustrates great behavioral and environmental aspects of crow life within social groups. It was nice for me to read this book to familiarize myself more with Crows with my research. As a corvid researcher myself I found the book very interesting, educational, and informative. I suggest anyone interested in birds or corvids (crows, jays, ravens, magpies, etc.) especially should read this book. The author writes with passion about his research and he explains it in a VERY simple way, understanding is easy. All in all this book was AWSOME!

        Description:
Human development often favors species adapted to human conditions with subsequent negative effects on sensitive species. This is occurring throughout the urbanizing world as increases by generalist omnivores, like some crows and ravens (corvids) threaten other birds with increased rates of nest predation. The process of corvid responses and their actual effects on other species is only vaguely understood, so we quantified the population response of radio-tagged American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), common ravens (Corvus corax), and Steller's jays (Cyanocitta stelleri) to human settlements and campgrounds and examined their influence as nest predators on simulated marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) nests on Washington's Olympic Peninsula from 1995 to 2000. The behavior and demography of crows, ravens, and jays was correlated to varying degrees with proximity to human development. Crows and ravens had smaller home ranges and higher reproduction near human settlements and recreation. Annual survival of crows was positively associated with proximity to human development. Home range and reproduction of Steller's jays was independent of proximity to human settlements and campgrounds. Local density of crows increased because home ranges of neighboring breeding pairs overlapped extensively (6x more than ravens and 3x more than Steller's jays) and breeders far from anthropogenic foods traveled 10s of kilometers to access them. Corvids accounted for 32.5% of the predation events (n=837) we documented on artificial murrelet nests. Small corvids (jays) were common nest predators across our study area but their contribution as predators did not vary with proximity to settlements and campgrounds. In contrast, large corvids (crows and ravens) were rare nest predators across our study area but their contribution varied greatly with proximity to settlements and campgrounds. Managers seeking to reduce the risk of nest predation need to consider the varied impacts and variable behavioral and population responses of potential nest predators. In our situation, removing large corvids may do little to reduce overall rates of nest predation because of the diverse predator assemblage, but reducing anthropogenic food in the landscape may be effective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for over wintering the harvest.......2007-09-07

I was so tired of freezing and canning all my garden products and was frightened about my eletricity and gas bills. So this book comes up with the solution how to spare all the energy costs and the hours of work for preparing the food for freezing and canning.: root cellaring.
The book is a wonderful ressource not only on the topic but also in gardening.
For me it is a "must-have" and I wish I had it got 25 years ago....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on gardening as well as storing.......2007-08-10

Many of the ideas don't work in our mild wet winters, but even so a wealth of ideas on how to think about the issues, and actually a useful garden reference for when to start what for eating when. A must have for my gardening library.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical guide to energy efficient food storage.......2006-03-01

No matter what your location or how much space you have, the Bubels are likely to have a root cellar option that will work for you. I've got the first edition, but I'm sure the second edition is just as good if not better. Detailed explanations of how to store vegetables and fruits without electricity with specific temperature and humidity recommendations for each variety. Many different cold storage designs. Good photos and diagrams. Well worth the money.

          5 out of 5 stars Yup!.......2005-11-17

Goes into what when and where. Perfect! Reduce your need for the grid man!

            Book Description

What is meant by attributing texts to Moses in Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism? The answer depends not only on the history of texts but also on the history of concepts of textuality. This book criticizes the terms "Pseudepigraphy" and "Rewritten Bible", which presuppose conceptions of authentic attribution and textual fidelity foreign to ancient Judaism.

Instead, this book develops the concept of a discourse whose creativity and authority depend on repeated returns to the exemplary figure and experience of a founder. Attribution to Moses is a central example, whose function is to re-present the experience of revelation at Sinai. Distinctive features of Mosaic discourse are studied in Deuteronomy, Jubilees, the Temple Scroll, and the works of Philo of Alexandria.

5 out of 5 stars The Prints of Barnett Newmann.......2000-04-03

If you like Barnett Newmann's work, or the art of the New York Abstract Expressionists, you will like this book. The reproduction of the prints: etching and lithographs are beautiful. Newmann's prints are quite different from his paintings in that the prints have a lighter, drawn quality, that his paitnings don't have. The introduction offers insight into what made Newmann turn to the print medium in the first place. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Modern Art.
