MysteryLarge Print EditionStylishly authentic . . . a graceful and informative case for Peters engaging herb-gardening monk. Kirkus ReviewsThe great annual Fair of Saint Peter at Shrewsbury, a high point in the citys calendar, attracts merchants from far and wide to do business. But when an unseemly quarrel breaks out between the local burghers and the monks from the Benedictine monastery as to who shall benefit from the levies the fair provides, a riot ensues. Afterwards a merchant is found dead, and Brother Cadfael is summoned from his peaceful herb garden to test his detective skills once more.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Dealing, Foul Deeds, and a Fearful Damsel.......2006-04-01

Provost Corviser leads a delegation of Shrewsbury's best men before Abbot Radolfus demanding a bigger share of the proceeds of St. Peter's Fair, an annual event sponsored by the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul. The money is needed to repair the town after the ravages of the recent seige of the town by the forces of King Stephen. Abbot Radolfus demurs, saying he's bound by the ancient charters.

Philip Corviser, the Provost's son, leads a delegation of young men to request a voluntary contribution from the merchants at the fair. There he is smitten by the beauty of a merchant's niece, and also smitten by the merchant's bludgeon. A riot ensues.

When the dust settles, young Corviser is in gaol, the merchant is in the mortuary, and the neice, Emma, is in fear--but of what? Not to worry, Ivo Cobriere, a handsome young nobleman, stands ready to aid her. Misfortune continues to stalk poor Emma and another murder occurs. Deputy Sheriff Hugh Beringar and Brother Cadfael are sure that Emma knows more than she is telling.

Philip gets out of gaol, another killing occurs, Cadfael and Hugh unravel the mystery, and the saga ends in a stirring chase and rescue.

St.Peter's fair is held annually on the section of land outside the monastery walls in Shrewsbury, but involves the monastery itself, with its guesthouses filled with the gentry and travelling merchants. When the body of wealthy merchant, Thomas of Bristol is discovered, stabbed, stripped and robbed, his niece Emma who was accompanying him, is put into the care of Aline, the wife of the deputy sheriff, Hugh Berengar. Brother Cadfael becomes the girl's protector as she moves around the town, determined to carry on her uncle's business, as he would have wished. Another merchant is murdered and Emma's belongings are searched as if the killer is looking for something in particular. The townspeople of Shrewsbury become very alarmed as this part of the country is still very much divided in its loyalties, with factions supporting King Stephen and others favouring Empress Maud. Cadfael is convinced that Emma knows more than she's admitting, but it's only when she is openly courted by a young nobleman, who would normally be considered too far above her in station, that her life is endangered. It's another fascinating story of life and death in 12th century England, with the detective monk, Cadfaek working his way methodiaclly through clues to a satisfactory solution.

4 out of 5 stars Brother Cadfael with a chase scene!.......2001-12-17

Of the chronicles of Brother Cadfael that I have thus far read, "St. Peter's Fair" is the most "mystery-like." No cut and dried solution springs to mind as the plot unfolds. This one had me guessing for some time.

All the regular ingredients of the previous stories are here: Political wrangling, personal intrigue, a love story, and of course--a murder.

Cadfael once more is a treasure trove of wisdom. Some of his lines here are classic. Cadfael is a very noble, very humane, world-weary protagonist. Ellis Peter has truly created a detective for the ages in him.

In "St. Peter's Fair" Cadfael is up against one heck of a baffling case. He and Hugh Berengar (my favorite secondary character) team up to try and solve the murder of a visiting merchant. I have no desire to give the ending away. I will only say that "St. Peter's Fair" has the added bonus of a chase scene.

"St. Peter's Fair" is a worthy entry in this series. The more I read of Ellis Peters, the greater my respect for her becomes. I recommend this book highly.

4 out of 5 stars More mediaeval goings-on to puzzle over.......2001-08-16

Ellis Peters' fourth Brother Cadfael mystery is set in the summer of 1139, in a Shrewsbury still recovering from the siege of town and castle by the army of King Stephen the previous summer. To speed the rebuilding of its defences, the townsfolk are eager for financial help from the abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, which, being located just outside the town, came through the episode of the siege without harm. With the lucrative annual three-day St. Peter's fair fast approaching, the burghers of the town are anxious to secure a share of its profits - normally given over entirely to the abbey. The new abbot, however, is far from anxious to set a dangerous precedent by ceding away the abbey's dues.

Thus it is that merchants arriving from distant towns for the fair find themselves suddenly embroiled in a dispute between town and cloister - and embroiled rather too deeply for comfort as the town's youth escalate the situation out of hand. And so it is that Shrewsbury (and therefore Brother Cadfael, of course) suddenly finds itself with the mystery of another murder (and various other nefarious goings-on) to solve.

With her characteristic meticulous attention to period detail, Ellis Peters weaves an intricate web of deceit and intrigue into this far from obvious murder mystery. As usual, she balances the political manoeuvrings of the principal parties with the playing out of a separate romantic sub-plot. This serves to keep the reader (and, in this case, Cadfael too) guessing almost up to the very end as to the real drama running through the story and, of course, to the identity of the villain of the piece. Indeed, the reader is well into the nail-biting conclusion to the story before realising fully what has been going on.

Peters' writing style ensures that this book is as enjoyable as Brother Cadfael books ever are. Fans of the mediaeval sleuth may be somewhat disappointed to find that he actually has very little to do here beyond collating the pieces of others' findings but this does not really detract from the tale over all. If the Cadfael books are new to you, I would really recommend reading the first two volumes before any others to truly get the most from them. On the other hand, if you are not interested in reading the whole series but simply want an evocative tale of mediaeval England, then you need look no further than this.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2006-04-14

This was one of the best arcs of the Bruce Jones run. This complex conspiracy story should be read in numbered order, with the exception of number five, Hide in Plain Sight, which has nothing to do with the rest of the arc.

4 out of 5 stars Bruce Jones is still incredible.......2004-08-15

After the cataclysmic events of the Split Decisions storyarc, Dead Like Me finds Bruce Banner, Nadia Blonsky, Doc Samson, and Mr. Blue, revealed to be Betty Ross, all at a cross roads. The conspiracy is deeper than any of them imagined, and now they have a Banner clone to deal with who is more than he seems. Even though this four part storyarc is fairly uneventful compared to other volumes in Jones' Hulk run, he still manages to keep the suspense mounting, even when he leaves more questions than answers. Doug Braithwaite's art is rather similar to that of the fantastic Mike Deodato, but not as cinematic. All in all, this collection continues Bruce Jones' amazing run on the Hulk, and is worth picking up for those who have enjoyed his work.

Book Description

From strenuous opposition to physician-assisted suicide to a conviction that sex-correction surgery for newborns is cruel and misguided, Dr. Paul R. McHugh's opinions are strong and often controversial. In this collection of essays, McHugh demonstrates why he is one of the most thought-provoking figures in the academic world.

These pieces argue for a realistic appraisal of just what psychiatrists know and how they know it, with the aim of indicating how such knowledge can best be used not only for better patient care but also to reflect on and influence public issues and social movements. His essays will stimulate professional and popular discussion about the goals and effectiveness of current psychiatric practice.

McHugh sorts through the layers of what he terms the "culturally driven misdirection of psychiatry and psychotherapy" to explain concepts often misunderstood by nonscholars and the intellectual community alike. America's leading psychiatrist may inspire you or offend you, but he will certainly make you think.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incisive and Insightful.......2007-05-07

This is a fantastic book that explores the depths that modern psychiatry has only recently rebounded from, and is in danger of relapsing into. McHugh is a fairly balanced thinker, and pretty well-informed. The article on sex reassignment surgery is an absolute gem that challenges psychiatry to look its dogma in the face. Occasionally, there is a tendency to be extremely conservative. The Terry Schiavo comparison to the Nazi's extermination is a bit hyperbolic, although his point that there was no fMRI, PET, or even conventional MRI to _scientifically_ enlighten the debate is a very good one. The slippery slope argument is valid, but I think focusing of the right to keep alive by tube-feeding is going to distract from more clear-cut issues. Finally, McHugh outlines where the future of psychiatry might lead and how we have to make crucial decisions at this point in history to keep the art in accordance with truly Hippocratic principles.

In short, every psychiatrist should read it, but I am sad to say there are many who won't because they lack the capacity to be self-critical.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Stimulating.......2007-04-02

An excellent collection of essays by Dr. Paul McHugh. Having been a student of Dr. McHugh's, these essays reveal his thoughtfulness and incredible grasp of things medical, social, and psychological. It is an excellent overview of where the field of psychiatry has been and where it is going. The future is bright thanks to the foresight and leadership of Dr. McHugh and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins, among others.

5 out of 5 stars A Welcome Re-Orientation.......2006-11-10

Having encountered the fads of the 70's-80's,I had come to take a very dim view of the profession. It is a relief to see that change is in the air, science is back in the saddle (or nearly), and a refreshing practicality guides at least some practitioners.

5 out of 5 stars Gaining Perspective in an Arena of Myths.......2006-11-04

McHugh provides biological, psychological, and psychiatric insights in a thoughtful, scholarly, and highly readible commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Breadth and Depth in a Slender Volume.......2006-07-21

In 1909, during a lecture at Clark University, Dr. Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, who was educated to be a neurologist, told his audience in Massachusetts that he was pleased and satisfied that psychoanalysis would only accompany medical doctors for a short distance but then "take leave of them."

Just how far this distance would grow and how unfortunate the consequences of the separation between psychoanalysis and scientific medicine would be for our culture, and indeed all of society, is one of the topics in this new, five-part book, "The Mind Has Mountains." The author, Dr. Paul McHugh, former chair of the department of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School, has put together a collection of his scholarly articles.

Harold Bloom in his column, "Why Freud Matters," (Wall Street Journal, May 5, 2006) advised us that despite the fact that no one today believes that psychoanalysis is a science, it cannot be gainsaid that "Freud ... was the equal of the other major writers of his era, James Joyce, Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka." Freudianism, along with its creative and imaginative platonic-like constructs (id, ego, libido, etc.) continues to impact society.

A reader of "The Mind Has Mountains" will have a balanced, erudite critique of Freud's continuing influence. Unlike the work of Freud and his progeny, Dr. McHugh's "Reflections" are based not on personal opinions or unproven theses, but are the fruit of years of painstaking, empirically verified research coupled with the vast clinical experience of the author and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and other major university hospitals.

The book is not narrowly limited to psychoanalysis, but treats the whole range of issues which psychiatry faces today. From Part I, "Beginnings," until the last chapters in Part V, "The Ethical Use of Embryonic Stem Cells" and "A Psychiatrist Looks at Terrorism," the book covers a breadth of subject matter in engaging language that is accessible to the layman.

5 out of 5 stars The Open Road Cookbook.......2007-01-29

What a great book! Minimal ingredients and wonderful sounding recipes. It's definitely coming on my next trip.

4 out of 5 stars Good Food- Fast!.......2006-08-25

I like this cookbook because it kept to basic ingredients. There is nothing worse than wanting to try a recipe and having to spend extra money on ingredients you will only use in one recipe. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but am looking forward to it soon.

5 out of 5 stars Eat Well While Traveling.......2006-07-24

I discovered this book when it was featured in Highways magazine. Learning to cook decent meals in an RV can be tricky. There's little counter space, minimal cupboard space and the fridge won't hold much, unless you have a top-of-the-line motorhome.
We've figured out some easy meals on our own such as fajitas using frozen pre-seasoned meat, but it's good to expand our repetoire. I like that Lund tries to use low-fat ingredients, limited ingredients, and keep the recipes fast and easy. The nutritional info is included for each recipe.

      5 out of 5 stars A must have for RV'ers !.......2006-02-24

After seeing JoAnna Lund make some easy dishes on the RV Today series, I decided that I would like to have a copy of her book. This book is a must have for RV'ers and home cooks alike! The book is full of easy, healthy and tasty receipes that you can make quickly. And, with a miminal amount of ingredients, they are very simple and quick to make, making them perfect for a working family or travelling RV'er that likes to have a home cooked meal after a long day at the office or on the road. Great book!

      Book Description

Owning a dog in the city has a completely different set of challenges than owning a dog in a rural or suburban setting. The city is full of distractions for a dog such as congestion, noise, crowds of people, cars, buses, bicycles, rollerbladers, trash, sewers, alleys, roadways and other dogs. Where you can exercise your dog is limited, and maneuvering a dog through city streets and across busy roadways is often hazardous. Rat poison sprinkled in alleyways, garbage on the sidewalk and around bins, and city puddles filled with unknown substances are all threats to any dog's health. In this book, Cis Frankel, an urban dog trainer who has trained thousand of dogs including Oprah Winfrey's cocker Spaniels, Solomon and Sophie, explains how to deal with the specific difficulties of living with a dog in the city. Believing that the best city dog is a well-trained dog, Cis explores the basics of puppy training (housebreaking, obedience, basic commands) and then delves into the particularities of training and owning a dog in the city. The informative and easy-to-access text covers collars and leash handling, navigating the streets, housebreaking in a high-rise, managing parks, crowds and roadways to create street-smart dogs, stressful situations to avoid, and health care specifics for city dogs. This one-of-a-kind book shows how to get the most out of your dog while living in the city, and how to get the most out of the city for your dog.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the best training book for a city dog.......2007-02-12

I have read various books about dog training but this one is the only one that I have found that addresses the problems that a dog living in a city might face. He needs to know how to recognize the difference between the sidewalk and the street, how to look before crossing, etc. This book is necessary if you have a dog and walk it around high traffick areas, or even for suburban dog owners who want to protect their dogs from neighborhood traffick.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial Book if you have a puppy/Crucial Reference Tool.......2005-12-19

Most dog trainin books out there fall into two categories
      1. Those books that assume you live on a farm and the dog can run an play on large acres of land- and you have 24 hours a day available to train.
or 2. The books that teach very specialized "dog tricks".

However, those types of books do not address the situation I was facing. I live in a city appartment and I work full time. I needed my dog to be housebroken, to come to me when told, to get on well with other dogs, and lastly (but by no means leastly) not run out into traffic.
Urban Dog addresses all these and other issues faced by city dog owners (a demographic long neglected by previous dog training books). It is easy to read and the tips are useful and simple to practice- however the book is very clear that training must be often and on a consistent basis.
It is a good book to keep on the shelf even when the puppy gets older- some new issues may come up or the dog might regress a little bit. So it is good to check what Urban Dog has to say on such an issue.

      Happy Training.

5 out of 5 stars The title is misleading.......2002-08-15

This, easy to follow, training manual is not just for the Urban Dog and its owner, these training methods are for everyone!

Frankel's training methods are well suited to any environment. Her tips are well researched and supported by experts in their fields. And the section on leash control is invaluable.

I have been active in the world of dogs for many years, but I never had amazingly well trained dogs until I met Cis. I have trained 5 of my own dogs with Cis, before, during and after the publishing of her book. My dogs are well known for their obedience, and manners. I can take them anywhere, be it city, suburb, country or hotel, and never worry about what they might do to embarrass me.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Training Manual!.......2001-06-11

I was impressed with this training book from the word go. Cis, a Chicago based dog Trainer, has covered many of the issues that most dog training books over look. Things like leash mechanics, introducing a new puppy to an adult dog and much, much more.

This book has information that every dog owner should have ... even if you don't live in the city! If your looking for your first dog training book or looking to add to your collection, I highly recommend picking this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Great even in not-quite urban areas.......2001-03-15

In less than a week we've already trained our 3-1/2 month old puppy to sit, stand, lay down, go to the door... using the methods in this book. They're very straightforward and Frankel has a great attitude about training dogs that is persistent throughout the book. The techniques that are said to pertain specifically to city life are excellent- even if you don't live in a super urban area- because they help you teach your dog how to deal with traffic, strangers, following you up or down stairs, and other scenarios that can happen everywhere.

My only critique is that the housebreaking section is a little weak, and I would have liked to see more information about the dog's psychology. But, overall- we're learning a lot from Frankel and on our way to a very well behaved dog.

5 out of 5 stars THE DESIGNS ARE A TREASURE AND SO IS THIS VOLUME.......2005-08-22

Lovers of fine, unique jewelry will be delighted and amazed to find the stunning works of art displayed in this landmark volume by Fritz Falk. Pieces shown range from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th. These designs are elegant, extravagant one-of-a-kind pieces with styles representing Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Among the designers included are Rene Lalique, GeorgesFouquet, Theodor Wende, Ernesto Rinzi - to name only a few of the masters who created memorable pieces.

Master goldsmith Fritz Falk holds a doctorate in art history and served as director of the Schmuck Museum from 1971 - 2003. It is he who shaped the collection as it is seen today, eliciting rave notices from the international community. The Schmuck, established in 1961, is the largest museum in the world dedicated to jewelry design and history.

With fascinating text in both English and German, the volume contains 190 color illustrations, each unforgettable, visually arresting. Dr. Falk contributes insightful introductions to each of the periods represented - The Revival Period, Art Nouveau and The Art Deco 20s/30s.

While many cannot board a plane to visit the Schmuck Museum in Pforzheim, Germany, all can enjoy this magnificent volume. It's a treasure in itself.

                    Book Description

In over 30 years of service, the Harrier has seen significant combat action for the British Royal Navy and the USMC: from the Falklands to Bosnia and Kosovo, from the First Gulf War to Afghanistan, the Harrier has played a key role. It has also seen service for Italy, Spain, and India. Distinctive and widely recognised, the Harrier was the world’s first VSTOL aircraft and its appeal for the modeller is clear. This title covers modelling the Harrier across a variety of scales, from the early version P.1127 through to later models. Advice on weathering, superdetailing, conversions and display bases combines with a wealth of recommended reference sources to create this packed and informative guide to modelling the Harrier.
