Book Description
Be afraid—be very afraid: the master of suspense is serving up 58 bloodcurdling tales for your delectation. These suspenseful stories all appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, and in the words of Hitch himself, they “are guaranteed to chill and unnerve.” Bill Pronzini contributes “The Arrowmont Prison Riddle,” Margaret B. Maron has “A Very Special Talent,” Barry M. Malzberg offers “A Home Away from Home,” and Patricia Matthews chronicles “The Fall of Dr. Scourby.” Meet a girl who stalks Jack the Ripper, a clairvoyant writer of newspaper obituaries, a homicidal partygoer in a sanatorium, and a police detective who lives vicariously through the exploits of one of his most notorious suspects: they all populate these frightening pages. Caution: not recommended for late-night reading—except for the very brave!

Tales of Terror : 58 Short Stories Chosen by the Master of Suspense.......2006-03-01
An Excellent collection of short stories to keep you in suspense.
Recommend to all short stories fans.......2006-02-24
I adore short stories so I was delighted to discover The Tales of Terror. I have over 200 books with short stories, so I was not surprised to find 2 or 3 stories I've "met" before. But I enjoyed reading them again, and there still remained a long list of some 55 fresh ones.
I immensely enjoyed re-reading A Cabin in the Woods by John Coyne. One must admire author's masterful way of increasing the suspense till culmination. Without revealing too much, it is a Man-against-Nature type of confrontation, only with a twist that will surprise you no matter what you happened to expect. I cannot speak for anybody else but for me this story is a gem.
There are a few stories about travelling, for those who like mystery and suspense "on the go" (Career Man by James Holding, The Perfidy of Professor Blake by Libby McCall, Sea Change by Henry Slesar and The Grateful Thief by Patrick O'Keeffe, of which the latter two take place on a sea cruise), a few newspaper tales (The Graveyard Shift by William P. McGivern, Man Bites Dog by Donald Honig,, The Death Desk by S.S. Rafferty and (sort of) also Theodore Mathieson's Second Spring).
Special mention for being truly very chilly deserve A Bottle of Wine (Borden Deal), Never Trust an Ancestor (Michael Zuroy), Sparrow on a String (Alice Scanlan Reach), That So Called Laugh (Frank Sisk), The Joker (by Betty Ren Wright), Death is a Lonely Lover (Roberty Colby) and Scheme for Destruction (Pauline C. Smith).
There were also some clever plots taking place in the ruthless world of business (Cora's Raid, Free Advice Incorporated, Hard Sell, Bank Night, The Prosperous Judds, The Time Before the Crime, The Real Criminal and the famous, ingenious Dettweiler Solution by Lawrence Block)
Last but not least, I vey much enjoyed reading several indispensable family cosies (We're Really Not That Kind of People (Samuel W. Taylor), A Very Special Talent (Margaret B. Maron) and the opening story of the book, Killed by Kindnes (Nedra Tyre). I should mention also Private Little War by William Brittain about a feuding teacher and pupil where one of them is ready to go too far. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by contributions of some authors never encountered before.
Maybe, like me, you will not like all stories to the same extent but this book - with its 631 pages - is doubtlessly good value for money and will bring you many enjoyable moments of suspense.

Pretty good,.. But.............2004-05-27
Dont get me wrong, there are 17 stories in this book and truthfully only a handful really stink, the rest are in the 3 - 4 star category (particularly the stories about Kang, Dr. Doom, Venom, Mephisto & ? at the end). However... I'd have preffered to see stories about the Green Goblin/Hobgoblin, Galactus, Annihilus, Kingpin, Doc Oc, Red Skull or Sabretooth (not one story involves spiderman, Daredevil or the FF another letdown), rather than waste stories on obscure villains like d'spare, nightmare & company.
Marvel out did themselves.......1998-09-13
its great all the stories were very well written however childs play started off kind of slow but turned out pretty good.and the twist at the end of the defiant ones was great.

Not what I expected..........2007-08-29
This book is a joke for even an advanced amateur....certainly not for anyone serious about massage therapy. Very unprofessionally done...couples might enjoy, but if that is the type of book it is inteded to be then it should promoted as such.
Nice book.......2007-01-27
This book was more or less what I expected. Easy to follow the instruction and give comfortable massage based on it. The book is nice to look at, with many good photos that show clearly what your suppose to do. Well worth the money.
Easy to follow.......2007-01-17
I bought this book to give my wife a relaxing massage. She has enjoyed the massages greatly. It's very easy to follow along. I don't find the techniques intimidating. The book emphasizes the physical connection between us, the opportunity for loving touch. It has been a wonderful addition.
Massage.......2006-11-21
I felt that though the instructions are well illustrated and that topics covered are very inclusive, the description of the techniques are somewhat elementary.
Very nice Massage Book.......2005-09-07
This Massage Book is easy to read and the pictures are clean and clear. Bonus: I like the information included on different massage oils and scents you can make from scratch or purchase.

Light yet Informative.......2002-04-13
When I first began reading "The Inquisitive Cook", I was disappointed at its very simple, almost simplistic, style. Having slogged through "On Food and Cooking" (ISBN 0684843285), and having read "The Science of Cooking" (ISBN 3540674667), and "The Curious Cook: More Kitchen Science and Lore" (ISBN 0020098014), I wondered how such an obviously lightweight and short book could teach me anything.
I need not have worried, though. Even though the chapters are short and the language usage is consistent with a 6th-to 8th-grade reading level, the book is highly informative. It doesn't go into deep discussions of principles, but instead gives a simple overview of a number of processes, together with lots of short, practical examples and experiments. I was very pleasantly surprised by how many of the things in the book covered new details on the topics I had already read about without excessively rehashing what I already knew.
If you really want to learn more of the science behind cooking, you might want to try one of the other books I mention above. If you're just looking to expand your knowledge of cooking in a painless and even fun way, this is the book for you.
You could easily read through the whole book in one session, but it really doesn't require that kind of investment of your attention. The chapters are short (as is the whole book), and there are lots of self-contained sidebars, so this book makes an excellent addition not only to your cooking library, but also to your bathroom magazine rack.
Disappointing.......2001-03-09
This book was disappointing in its lack of detail. It doesn't really get into much depth on any topic and I just didn't learn anything from it.

A Pinch of Curiosity.......2000-05-28
The Inquisitive Cook-Discover How a Pinch of Curiosity Can Improve Your Cooking, by Anne Gardiner and Sue Wilson and the Exploratorium, Henry Holt Books, is part of a series called The Accidental Scientist. Here's where you turn if you want to know whether brown eggs are more nutritious than white, why and when meat is seared, all about yeast, what salt does in boiling water for pasta cooking, and, this most teasing Ten O'Clock News-ish item, "Can curdled Hollandaise Sauce be saved?" The Inquisitive Cook is a zippy book packed with practical info and answers to common questions, as well as those we might never have considered even lying awake at 3 a.m. on a hot, still night, e.g. " If sugar affects cooking temperatures, does it also influence freezing?"

Pretty pictures, scary text, bad index.......2006-10-27
I concur with the other reviewers on bad proofreading. The icons cannot be relied on, even if you manage to figure out the mysterious equivalence between liters and cubic meters. Here's a couple other problems found in a quick read of a couple species I'm familiar with: Beta Fighting Fish (This book's symbols: Single Specimen and good community fish, minimum tank size 24 which is the same as most other beginner fish, but from reading another book they are happiest in 1 liter stagnant ponds with no other fish around to harrass them. I tried my beta in a 28 gallon tank and when three mollies were added, it showed signs of stress, so it is back in it's tiny tank and doing fine again.); Lyretail Black Molly is the only Molly listed while my pet store has a half dozen varieties.. Silver, Dalmation, standard tail, etc. (This book lists it as Single Specimen, not a community fish while another book that focuses on Mollies says these are happiest when scooling with others of the same kind.)
The organization and indexing is not suitable for a beginner. Suppose you wanted to find the Molly, like I did. You would have to know it is categorized as a Freshwater Livebearer AND called Poecilia Sphenops, or look it up under the common name index Lyretail Black Molly (sorted with the L's). Or, do like I did and flip through the pictures until you find it.
I'm returning this book and eagerly waiting for the 2nd or 3rd edition. Even though I really like the pictures, I need something more than a picture book.
WAKE UP THE PROOFREADER!!.......2006-07-26
We recently had the MISfortune of checking out the book: "THE AQUARIUM FISH HANDBOOK" from the library as we are beginning to get into tropical fish. While the reviews and cover-page blurbs sound glowing - within a few hours we found that the book was confusing (to say the least) on many points!
The first point is the "Minimum Volume" symbol; 24, 36, 48, 60, or 72 WHATS? The "Key" page says it could be "...gallons/liters or ... cubic feet/meters." There's a BIT of difference between a liter and a cubic meter, isn't there? If these are 'relative numbers' then 'relative to WHAT? Tank size, fish population, square inches, ???
Then there are the illustrations on page 12! On the bar graph "Tropical freshwater" is blue and is supposed to represent 1 inch of fish per 12 sq. in. of tank, "Tropical marine" is pink and represents 1 inch per 48 sq. in. but in the charts at the bottom of the page - the "tropical" box shows 9 pink fish while the "marine" box shows 36 BLUE fish! All in all, those calculations are correct but reversed! Then, to add insult to injury, the calculation for "Coldwater": four hundred and forty two divided by ONE HUNDRED and thirty? The proofreader was napping on this one!
The other "Oopsie" we have spotted in our cursory scan through the book was on page 103, re Altum Angelfish. The little Hand Symbol of dificulty rates this fish as number ONE or "Easiest to care for" while the "Special care" paragraph of this section states "This fish ... is an extremely dificult and delicate fish to keep"???? Which is it?
And this is just from a brief scan through the book from a simple, logical viewpoint. Paraphrasing the TV show "CSI": "little mistake - BIG mistake"! With these errors that should be easy to spot in the book - can we REALLY rely on the OTHER data presented therein? It is not too great a stretch of imagination that just these errors and confusions I have named could cost someone a good deal of effort, time AND money if someone relied 100% on this book! Clearly, we are glad that we checked the book out of our local library - for FREE - and didn't waste our money on it!
I'm returning this book.......2004-07-24
I've got to disagree with the previous reviewer, Gen, on this one! I would NOT recommend this book. It is very attractive with lovely pictures, but I found it full of errors and contradictions. Here are a few I found in about 20 minutes of browsing:
page 12: the graphics of tropical and marine fish are reversed, making it look like it's okay to keep 36 inches of marine fish when it's really 9 (the text is correct)
page 103: the Altum Angelfish is desribed as "an extremely difficult and delicate fish to keep," but the it gets a 1 (easiest) on the "ease of keeping" scale. Huh?
Numerous examples of fish being given a "safe with small fish" symbol, but being described in the text as eating small fish, See porkfish (page 239), flame hawkfish (238) and long-nosed hawkfish (239), for example.
I bought this book to help me select peaceful marine fish that would be reef-safe, but because of these issues it's useless to me and I'm returning it. It's a shame, because it is a great-looking, well-organzied book.
All the fish I need to know about.......2004-06-05
I've been keeping fish for 17 years and this is the best book I have found that describes all the fish I've owned! Great descriptions on cichlids and includes scientific names and common names. Very easy to read (not tiny print and not boring). I love this book - the photos are clear and not all blurry or cheap quality. DK books photograph quality! The fact that it's spiral bound means I can lie down in bed and browse all the different fish without having to push the cover back. I can do my daily stretching while reading about fish! How relaxing and convenient! GREAT BOOK.

Amazing Book... A must have for organic gardening.......2007-07-15
This book is awesome. Eliot presents an abundance of information. The information is organized and clear. Eliot does not assume what we already know, and what we have at our disposal. For example, many books will tell you how to create a mulch pile. You need this much brown matter, this much green matter, ... . That is all fine and dandy, but where do I magically get all of this material! Eliot understands this and explains many ways we can obtain the mulch material. He also does not assume your knowledge basis. For example, he will explain what and how a lugume works. This book is a constant resource for the organic gardener.
A great book!

I live in Northwest Washington. Cool, dry in July in August, generally mild and wet the rest of the year. If you are thinking tomatoes, long season sweet corn, peaches, melons, peppers, etc. you are on the wrong side of the state - try Eastern Washington. Either way, or where ever you grow, this is the bible. Its the most comprehensive, holistic guide I know. You might also read other guides, embellish or adapt Eliot's system to fit your situation, but you won't find a better collection of techniques to start from! Get this book!
Wooo..........2007-02-09
Got me hiped up for my next several years here in Missouri. Practical, simplified systems for both the new and novice organic gardener. Definitely a fun read. Bring your highlighter. Thank you to the author, and all of the great shoulders that he stood on to get to this point...
My new constant companion.......2006-12-22
Mr. Coleman has packed so much information into this wonderful book! I have started to use many of his suggestions. Keeping the costs of growing food down was one of the first subjects that caught my attention.
simply down to earth - literally.......2006-08-11
This is absolutely the best, straightforward, down to earth, organic gardening book I have ever read. No hype, no buzzwords, no new age crap, no agenda. Simply down to earth - literally.

Book Description
In 1976, while imprisoned on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela secretly wrote the bulk of his autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom." The manuscript was to be smuggled out by fellow prisoner Mac Maharaj on his release later that year. Maharaj also urged Mandela and other prominent political prisoners to write essays on South Africa's political future. These were smuggled out with Mandela's autobiography and are now published for the first time.
Written by Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki, and four other leaders of the anti-apartheid movement, these essays provide a rare view of their thinking at a critical point in the liberation struggle, on the eve of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. The leaders describe their philosophies, strategies, and hopes. They debate such crucial issues as violent versus nonviolent forms of struggle, diversity and unity, the ideological challenge of the Black Consciousness movement, and how to accommodate different interpretations of African nationalism.
The book begins with a foreword by Desmond Tutu and a contextualizing introduction by Maharaj. Then come two essays by Mandela and one each by Sisulu, Kathrada, Mbeki, Billy Nair, John Pokela, Eddie Daniels, and Andimba Toivo ya Toivo. Each essay is preceded by a short biography of the author, a description of his life in prison, and a pencil sketch by a black South African artist.
