Customer Reviews:
A excellent read indead.......2005-05-30
This book is a common type in the science fiction area where guest authors add stories on a theme to a skeleton set by the main author. Not only does this require strong co-authors but a strong and skilled main author which role is filled admirably by Laura Antoniou.
The Academy its self is a meeting of trainers with slaves that are good enough that their owners want to show them off. While there is good erotica here the main plot centers on Chris and his goal of being a slave and Anderson's sale of him. The other major plot concerns his proposal to rate trainers and only give full rating to those who have served as slaves under a master trainer for at least two years. Michael from The Trainer is still around and Chris has improved him to the extent that he appears human and has started to understand service; in fact he gets an award as "most popular with men women and sled dogs".
Unlike some standard erotic fiction these books by Laura Antoniou have plots, humor and good character development with interesting characters.
A wonderful idea that is done very very well........2001-11-14
Laura Antoniou had a great idea: her Marketplace series was so popular and fans wanted so much more, why not continue the story but also allow others to create their own Marketplace pieces? The result is the wonderful story of the Marketplace worldwide meeting with the intriguing Kris Parker as the main character. We also meet older slaves, trainers, and owners, and those somewhere in between at the Asia meeting. Not only do we find out more about Kris Parker but we also get the wonderfully varied works of sevearl well-known and fairly new erotica authors other than Antoniou. Almost every taste and every orientation and every combination is covered as we go from formal slavery in Asia and England to the new age of California and the proper victorian style households. I enjoyed it greatly; only wished I could have written a story for it too.
The Academy - Worth every cent.......2001-07-13
This book was awesome. I loved the way differnet writers did different stories and then Laura worked her magic to weave them all together. I could not put it down. I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.
The story continues..........2001-06-24
The Academy: Tales of the Marketplace is set in Japan. We find Chris Parker, among other reader favourites, at the Marketplace's annual gathering, The Academy. Chris is to present a proposal that may cause some waves within the organization. Michael LaGuardia has accompanied Chris to this annual event and we watch him as he continues to struggle to become a Trainer. Of course, the book is filled with all the wonders of The Marketplace, such as pony and dog slaves, pleasure slaves, and other specialty slaves.
If you ever wanted to know about Parker, this book is definitely for you. We learn quite a bit more about how Parker came to be as well as a few other interesting bits about other Marketplace favourites. I couldn't put the book down (but then again, I couldn't do it with the first three either). At first, Parker wasn't my main focus, but by the time I reached The Trainer, I was hooked. I needed to know more and was in agony until I found that a fourth novel was coming out, The Academy. I prayed that I would finally be put out of my pleasant misery with more tidbits about Parker. My begging was answered.
As an interesting twist, Antoniou has invited authors Karen Taylor, david stein, M. Christian, Cecelia Tan, and Michael Hernandez to contribute a series of short stories. Each story is it's own, but blends nicely and gives us more glimpses of The Marketplace.
My only disappointment was Michael's role in the novel. When Anderson reveals to Parker what she feels Michael's most likely outcome would be. I laughed, thinking it was surely a joke. But when I saw her prediction played out in a few very short pages, I was very let down...cheated. I didn't like Michael at the beginning, but I grew to like him, even started following him more closely. I felt my time invested in him was a waste.
Lifting my spirits at the end was a glimpse of Antoniou's next book, The Reunion. Once again, I feel anxious. Must have Parker.
A Good Book in a Great Series.......2001-02-22
Finally Ms Antinou is back with her fantastic Marketplace series. Initially I was uncertain that I would like this book due to the fact that it was a series of short stories rather than a complete novel. However, the individual short stories are held together by a plot line dominated by a political battle within the Marketplace that defines it's very essence. This subplot helps maintain coherence and moves the novel along very well.
The only other fault that you may notice is that some of the references are dated (such as describing the coming return of Hong Kong to China). But nothing serious enough to ruin the enjoyment of well written prose.
For those readers that fell in love with the BDSM classic, the Story of O, there has finally come a series that treats BDSM as more than just a cheap trick to sell poorly written porn. This book is well written, has identifiable characters and an interesting premise. Lara Antinou is a frequent guest at many BDSM conferences. I believe that her premise taps into the desire of many of BDSM scene (whether they go the events or just dream at home) that there is a group of people out there that take the leather scene a little more seriously than your average S&M aficionado. It is just a little exciting to think that if you can shine as a truly powerful Master or well behaved slave, that you may be allowed into a special clique of true devotees.
In addition to her well conceived premise, the characters in the book are well developed and interesting to read about. And while you may or may not identify with the disciplined Chris Parker or the self indulgent Michael, they sure would be a lot of fun to meet in the proper setting.
Just one note of caution, if you are not comfortable with male bisexuality then you may not enjoy this book. Otherwise I think that you find it is a welcome break from aggressive, badly written fare that passes for BDSM novels.

shallow water.......2007-09-14
This book is really geared to the lower denominator in terms of what there is to do in the Black Hills. Not very much insight that you can't get from the tourist info you get from flyers. Should say more about how anti-family Deadwood has become and about the incredible natural resources that are in the area.
travel lover.......2007-07-17
We just returned from South Dakota. We took our [...]grandson. The book was perfect for us. It gave us all the things that kids loved to do and we let him decide which ones he wanted to see. We had 5 days there and we used it all the time. We had bought another book but it was not nearly as good as this one.
Great guide for going to South Dakota with kids.......2007-07-12
We just got back from spending over a week in the Badlands and Black Hills. I turned to this book over and over since we brought 3 kids under the age of 10. A great resource when you're looking for things to do with kids. You'll need a separate book for hotels, restaurants, etc. but this book was exactly what I needed to plan activities throughout the day that my kids wouldn't be totally bored with.

Product Description
The wind will not stop. Gusts of sand swirl before me, stinging my face. But there is still too much to see and marvel at, the world very much alive in the bright light and wind, exultant with the fever of spring, the delight of morning. Strolling on, it seems to me that the strangeness and wonder of existence are emphasized here, in the desert, by the comparative sparsity of the flora and fauna: life not crowded upon life as in other places but scattered abroad in spareness and simplicity, with a generous gift of space for each herb and bush and tree, each stem of grass, so that the living organism stands out bold and brave and vivid against the lifeless sand and barren rock. The extreme clarity of the desert light is equaled by the extreme individuation of desert life-forms. Love flowers best in openness and freedom. "This book may well seem like a ride on a bucking bronco. It is rough, tough, combative. The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book. It has philosophy. It has humor. It has its share of nerve-tingling adventures... set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." --Edwin Way Teale, New York Times Book Review

First the bad news. In the decades leading up to menopause, the average woman can expect to gain 29 pounds. The better news is found on the pages of Fit Not Fat at Forty Plus, an outstanding diet and fitness guide from the editors of Prevention magazine. Grounded in the latest research and packed with practical suggestions, the book recognizes the unique gravity-defying needs of women over 40. Early chapters offer a crash course on the "midlife fitness crisis" of lowered estrogen and sluggish metabolism. "To win the metabolic war, you must change the way you eat and exercise," warn the authors. Other chapters offer hope and help for women with suddenly flabby arms, tight jeans, afternoon fatigue, and a bathroom scale that won't budge. The key is developing a personal diet and fitness strategy to boast metabolic rate and counter hormonal shifts. One standout section explains why stress feeds fat cells and how to define whether you are feeling hungry or stressed. Readers who follow these metabolism-boosting workouts and sample eating plans can lose the over-the-hill birthday cards. --Barbara Mackoff

Fit Not Fat at 40-Plus.......2007-07-05
I liked the uncomplicated language and writing style that gave practical steps to improve right away. It provided advice, tips, and other information helpful to understanding changes that occur after 40. I also contained explainations of how my body works. I did not feel like I had to have a lot of background knowledge to start improving.
10 down and 7 to go!.......2007-07-04
I can highly recommend this book to any woman who wants to shed a few pounds gained along the way (over 40 or not)! It's not that there is anything revolutionary about it, it just reminds you in a positive way about everything you ever learned about healthy eating and exercise...plus a few extra gems that you didn't know about. Which is not to give it justice. I love how the book is very practical and helps you make your own plan that you can live with. I use the weekly planning sheets and daily tracking sheets religiously. My husband has laughed at my ridiculous calorie-counting, but, you know, it works and so I'm sticking with it!! 10 pounds down, 7 to go!
The book is very well thought-out and offers something for everybody. It's just what I was looking for.
Fit Not Fat at Forty Plus.......2007-06-27
I loved this book and most importantly imlemented what I learned in the book and am thrilled with the results. I am eating more often and seldom feel humgry and my weight is coming down steadily. I have gone from 133lbs to 122lbs and holding steady.
Fit or Fat.......2007-01-16
There was nothing earth shattering in this book. It is all the same old common sense. Maybe it will motivate you.
Easy to Understand.......2005-10-10
I have enjoyed reading the information in this book. The insight on GI eating, importance of exercise, value of supplements is amazing. I have changed my diet choices to lower GI and you would not believe how long I am able to go in between meals. Why? because I'm not harassed by bouts of hypoglycemia. It's great. I haven't lost any weight as of yet but I imagine that's inevitable!
Book Description
A culinary travel odyssey in which the reader is introduced to a wide variety of exotic, yet obtainable ingredients and then initiated into their usage in the greatest street cuisine on the planet. An accompanying MAC and PC compatible CD-ROM includes hours of movies, music and sound that provide the viewer with a window into everyday Indonesian cultural and culinary life.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful presentation throughout - authentic food.......2006-03-22
I love the way Miller presents his stories, pictures and foods on this book.
I do notice that Miller uses substitution. For example,he indicated green onion as garnish to 'Soto Ayam'. In most parts of Indonesia, the garnish is actually Chinese eelery, not green onion. Chinese celery is usually readily available in many Asian grocery stores in the West Coast.
Title: No "secrets", but plenty of good recipes.......2005-12-29
This is a wonderful book for fans of Indonesian culture and cuisine. It comes with an interactive CD-ROM that augments the content with music, videos, scalable recipes and ingredient pronunciations! Any Indonesian traveler will immediately recognize favorites such as gado-gado, tempe kering and opor ayam. The recipes are easy to follow and result in authentic-tasting food.
On the downside, the CD-ROM has a few minor problems. Navigation is slow and cumbersome, the graphics are grainy and there are spurious characters in some of the descriptions. (Perhaps due to my running it on a PC.) The content focuses mainly on Central Java, the cultural heartland of Indonesia, interesting for beginners but leaving many other areas, such as Bali, barely touched. Hardcore Indonesiaphiles will be disappointed. This also goes for the recipes - few from Lombok, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Kalimantan or the Moluccas. Some of the photos in the book are grainy, poorly reproduced or just not very good.
Despite the downsides, the book is well worth the price. Enjoy!
This is the real thing!.......2005-03-10
Having spent eight months living in Bali, I have a homesick spot for the food I ate there. This is the first Indonesian cookbook I've seen that contains recipes for just about all the dishes I actually ate while I was there. Not foofie, fancy food, this what I, and the Balinese, ate day in and day out, whether bought from the warungs and bakso carts or served by Ibu at family dinners with friends. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet (I just got the book and CD) but from those I already make, I can say the recipes are authentic, and I want to try just about every one of them! Well done!
An impressive compilation of ethic family recipes.......2003-05-17
Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world and home to the largest Islamic population on earth. Indonesian Street Food Secrets: A Culinary Travel Odyssey is an impressive compilation of ethic family recipes that are prepared right on the sidewalk by Indonesian food vendors. Enhanced with 230 color photographs of the food and culture, Indonesian Street Food Secrets also includes an accompanying CD-ROM providing hours of movies, sounds and recipes that are customizable for their degree of "hotness" and party size. With its collection of authentic recipes, Indonesian Street Food Secrets will prove to be a unique addition to kitchen cookbook collections and is especially recommended to dining clubs wanting to celebrate the culinary traditions of the Indonesian archipelago!
A Beautiful Book.......2003-02-25
Although I have never been to Indonesia, nor am I an experienced cook, I found this book fascinating. It really is about the Indonesian culture as it is represented by its food. The photos are outstanding and give the reader a non-tourist view of of this intriguing land. The recipes are easy to follow and the author gives substitute ingredients if the more exotic foods can not be found. I very much enjoyed reading the information sections and can't wait to try some of the recipes.

This book will answer all your equine nutrition questions.......2005-01-07
I can't say enough about this book. These days we are bombarded with these ads for supplements the manufacturers insist our horses must have! But we can cause real problems if we don't know what we are doing. Too much of this? Not enough that? We can cause serious damage. This book will tell you exactly what your horse needs by taking in all kinds of factors such as how much work he does, where he lives, etc.
Easy to read, easy to understand. Buy this book!
Equine Supplements & Nutraceuticals: A Guide to Peak Health.......2000-10-15
This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of nutrition for horses. With all of the charts on every vitamin and mineral needed for equine's, it is very easy to understand for the lay-person. This book goes into great detail on precise amounts needed for each type of discipline and what you may need to add or subtract to "balance" your horses diet. I would strongly recomend this book for any and every horse owner's library.

This new, expanded edition promises to be an even more effective ally in your quest to create a beautiful, healthy, well-maintained perennial garden.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2007-10-05
I have only had this a few weeks but already have referred to it many times. It gives very practical information in a forthright manner. Definitely a great addition to my gardening library.
Well worth having.......2007-10-01
Tracy's use of the latin name as opposed to the common name is a little un-nerving for a begginer- like me - but it is one way to drum it into you so that when you go to the nursery you will find what you truly want... plus the detail to specific plants is amazing. Appendix C is worth the price of the book alone...
A wonderful book I refer to it constantly.......2007-09-30
I bought this book for my Mother-in-law and she wrote 'The information is set out in a concise format which is easily referenced. It is packed with information to help you get the most from your perennials. It is a wonderful book and I refer to it constantly.'
Garden lover's delight.......2007-09-07
I love this book! It is as beautiful as it is informational. It is delightful to read to the work of a master who can convey her heart as well as her technical skills. I am pleased to add it to my gardening book treasures.
The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques.......2007-09-07
I really like this book. It is very informative and was what I was looking for.
Book Description
Timber Press's all-time bestseller! Tracy DiSabato-Aust has devoted years of study to creating showplace gardens with minimal maintenance. Her methods of pruning and shaping perennials, thoroughly explained and illustrated here, produce more flowers, encourage lush new growth, discourage pests, stagger bloom times, and maintain vigorous health. Readers have given us rave reviews of this book since publication.
Customer Reviews:
Useful stuff.......2006-11-04
Most garden books concentrate on flower type, color, pairing or such. This book gets you into the day to day maintance such as pinching, dead heading and pruning in a stright forward manner. By following these guides a gardener will end up with much fuller longer lasting flowers. If done with perenials the pinched tops can be just stuck in the ground in a shady spot and have new plans even if 75% do not start.
HLM
Not your average gardening book.......2006-03-21
This is not another book of pretty pictures of flowers. The book takes you from start (preparing the soil), to caring for your plants (pruning tips), to finish (dividing mature plants).
Excellent, practical advice for novices and more.......2005-10-24
I've been gardening for 4 years and I learned a few really useful things from Tracy's book; enough to keep it on my list of "most wanted" gardening books. There is a great deal of information on preparing beds, soil amendment, planting and some creative pruning ideas. I think of this book the same way I think of Jaques Pepin's "La Technique" when it comes to cooking. It's a basic, a classic, and it should be on your shelf, or better yet in front of you.
Great for the non-professional.......2005-10-10
This is a book that I give to all my new perennial clients. It is well written and easy to understand.Tracy cuts my extra
phones calls down to a minimum. She gives easy care instructions with optional more in depth instructions for general propogation. Highly recommend it for the perennial gardener.
excellent explanations.......2005-09-13
This book as been invaluable in caring for my first perennial garden. She doesn't just tell you what to do she actually explains what each task means/is/how it is done. The only thing truly lacking that i find myself wishing for every time I go through the book is more on design. The pictures are great but there is often not a listing of all the plants or a corresponding lay-out so I can use them for help in future planning. A key element for her to have left out I think. Maybe I will find another book with more on that aspect.

Book Description
General Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr., USAF, fought in three American wars and became the first African American to attain the rank of four-star general in the United States Armed Forces. He was a talented military leader, an excellent orator and an advocate for equal rights for blacks in the military. James was once one of the most powerful men in the world, and today he is often classed with such great American generals as Patton, MacArthur and Pershing.
This biography explores James's life and assesses his place in American military history. From his childhood through his role and service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, the book traces his personal and career development, his influences, and his climb through the military ranks. Photographs of James are included as well as detailed bibliographical information at the end of each chapter.

I watched a couple shows that touched on General "Chappie James & I immediately became interested in him. From his personal triumphs & beliefs, to the influence/words of wisdom from his mother, I had to know more. I read some articles & web pages, but I really wanted more information in the form of a biography.
I found a couple on Amazon, but none had reviews (which is the reason I decided to leave one after reading this book). I searched the internet for reviews, but again I came up with nothing. I decided to take a chance & order the biography by Bracey.
Well, first the good news. If you are doing research or a thesis on Gen. James, get this book. It basically does the leg work for you. No library searches needed, it's all here. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing I can say & it's also the reason I didn't enjoy the book at all.
I found the book almost painful to read. There is no flow, no method, and the book is constantly jumping from quote to quote, excerpt to excerpt. The author makes no attempt to form an overall picture of the man, instead the author tries to be too fair by writing from all angles, citing as many quotes as he could, & it makes for a very distracting writing style. As soon as one quote is cited and the author writes his interpretation of it, there's an opposing point of view quote with another interpretation by the author. After a couple pages, you're left with 10 quotes, the author's definition of each, and a choppy paragraph at the end trying to tie it all together. This goes on from start to finish & you can't get any clear picture of the man the book is about.
Just look at these numbers, 18 chapters plus an epilogue comprising only 203 pages. If you add up the references to notes at the end of each chapter plus the epilogue, they total 647 (and over 200 entries in the bibliography & an index of 7 pages of double column entries in small font). The book is one giant bibliography.
I give the author credit for doing his homework, but he just couldn't put it all together into a successful, informative, enjoyable biography. Just too much info, crammed into to small of a book, with no real chances taken by the author to write on his own.
Overall I was very disappointed in this book & it did no justice to the legend of General James.
I plan on reading another biography on James & I hope with different results.
