In this 21st century version of the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral," two computer wizards engage in the kind of high-tech combat that only a hacker could love. Wyatt Gillette, a cybergenius who's never used his phenomenal talent for evil, is sitting in a California jail doing time for a few harmless computer capers when he gets a temporary reprieve--a chance to help the Computer Crimes Unit of the state police nail a cracker (a criminally inclined hacker) called Phate who's using his ingenious program, Trapdoor, to lure innocent victims to their death by infiltrating their computers. Gillette and Phate were once the kings of cyberspace--the Blue Nowhere of the title--but Phate has gone way past the mischievous electronic pranks they once pulled and crossed over to the dark side. While Trapdoor can hack its way into any computer, it's Phate's skill at "social engineering" as well as his remarkable coding ability that makes him such a menace to society. As Wyatt explains to the policeman who springs him from prison so that he can find and stop Phate before he kills again, "It means conning somebody, pretending you're someone you're not. Hackers do it to get access to data bases and phone lines and pass codes. The more facts about somebody you can feed back to them, the more they believe you and the more they'll do what you want them to."
Bestselling author Jeffery Deaver (The Empty Chair, The Devil's Teardrop) ratchets up the suspense one line of code at a time; his terrific pacing drives the narrative to a thrilling and explosive conclusion. This thriller is bound to induce paranoia in anyone who still believes he can hide his deepest secrets from anyone with the means, motive, and modem to ferret them out. --Jane Adams
Book Description
His code name is Phate -- a sadistic computer hacker who infiltrates people's computers, invades their lives, and with chilling precision lures them to their deaths. To stop him, the authorities free imprisoned former hacker Wyatt Gillette to aid the investigation. Teamed with old-school homicide detective Frank Bishop, Gillette must combine their disparate talents to catch a brilliant and merciless killer.
Download Description
From the bestselling author of "The Empty Chair" comes the suspenseful story of a computer hacker--code-named PHATE--on a Silicon Valley killing spree. Hot on his trail are ex-hacker Wyatt Gillette and Frank Bristol, a grizzled homicide detective who's accustomed to using old-fashioned forensics to track his quarry.
Customer Reviews:
No Lincoln Rhyme - but none the worse for it!.......2007-06-01
Most of Deaver's best work has involved quadriplegic criminalist Lincoln Rhyme (superbly brought to the screen by Denzel Washington in The Bone Collector) but there's more to this author than that acclaimed series. The thing about Deaver is that he always knows his subject material in great detail, and there's no doubt about his knowledge of the world of cyberspace, HTML and hacking as displayed here in The Blue Nowhere. As another reviewer here suggested, there's an underlying impression that computers today (in the worst hands) can do what a .45 could do in a Western of 100 years earlier.......KILL.
Written around 2000/2001, I have a feeling that some of the pseudonyms used (like Phate, Trapdoor etc) will probably sound a bit dated five years on and indicative of a by-gone age (the technology bubble of the 1990's) but it was appropriate for that time I guess - things move so fast in the blue nowhere - anyway this book was the right story at the right time and still holds up five years on. The great news is that, good as it is, there are riches galore to be found in the still-growing Deaver library. Anyone who owns one of his books will be planning on buying another I'm sure; as for those who haven't taken the plunge, well you're very lucky as there are great things in store for you. Jeffrey Deaver is one of the very best psychological thriller writers of the present day.....end of story.
The Blue Notworthwastingyourtime.......2007-01-01
Generally I like Deaver's novels - and the premise of this one sounded interesting. But he's in over his head this time. Anyone who has spent more than a few hours online can see that the writer doesn't really understand what he's talking about. By the end of the book I was just reading it to finish it - and the end wasn't worth doing that.
If you have to read a Deaver novel, do yourself a favor and go re-read "The Coffin Dancer" instead.
This is the most entertaining book I've read in a while........2006-12-04
All I have to say is that i regret the fact that this is my first Jeffery Deaver book because this book is so fun and entertaining that I'm sold on Deaver and am looking to read the rest of his books. I read this book in two sittings because I simply could not put it down because I was so involved and really wanted/needed to know what was next. This story isn't about the reader trying to figure out who the antagonist is (you actually learn is identity pretty early) but is instead about the mind/computer games the good guys play with the bad guys and who will be one step ahead, and are they really ahead, or far behind? There are so many twists and turns in this book that you'll read it just as quickly as I did. I'm officially a Deaver fan now, and I recommend you pick up this book.
JD at his best, and you don't have to be a computer geek.......2006-08-10
Jeff Deaver is the king of plot twists and pace. (Some would argue Patterson is the pace king, but to me Deaver's got it just right). Typical of Deaver, there's no way you can guess the outcome of this marvelous thriller. Blue Nowhere is pure entertainment, as two dueling hackers "have it on." One hacker is a serial killer, the other is an ex-con helping the police. Don't expect more than fun, thrills, and surprises. It's a one-night read, only because you won't want to stop. I read mine on the porch in a rainstorm and I never left that porch until it was finished. Classic Deaver, but without Rhyme and Sachs (which is fine, I love them as characters, but I enjoyed the new characters). I suppose the computer technology is, or will soon be, out of date, but that's not fundamental to the story. If you look past the computers, you'll enjoy a non-stop thrill ride.
Good plot.......2006-06-19
I love Jeffery Deaver. He has a great way of telling a story and making you feel as if you are there with the characters every step of the way. This one had be gussing until the end (and even then I found out my guessing was wrong). Great book and hard to put down. I also like the way that he explains things in his books. I don't know the first thing about hackers or the web for that matter, but was able to follow the plot with no problems.

Customer Reviews:
Best book for Parents.......2007-10-04
This book is so great. I have used it alot. I think it has saved us from many unnecessary trips to the Dr. It has all the right answers and what to do for injuries or illnesses. It is now a standard baby shower gift from me.
Packed with useful information.......2007-08-10
I bought this book after reading several reviews and have been pleased with what I have read so far. There is so much information, which is a plus. I will more than likely only read certain pages when my child's health pertains to that particular subject. Would recommend as a sole source for a new parent.
If an "Instruction Manual" exists for kids, this is IT!.......2007-06-12
This book is an ESSENTIAL reference guide for all parents, grandparents and caregivers. A friend of mine who is a pediatrician recommended this book when I asked her what her favorite child care book was. It gives the straight nuts and bolts of every issue that could arise with your child, from colic to fevers to jellyfish stings(!)
The book has come through for me so many times when I have had questions - is this serious, should I call the doctor now or in the morning? What is that RASH? Why is my infant making that wierd noise? As someone else said in another review, it's tuly like having a pediatrician on speed-dial.
My only sticking point with recommending it is the advice on child rearing, which I believe should allow for more grey areas than the black and white answers Dr. Schmitt provides. I agreed with many of his points. His "How to Spoil a Child" bulleted list is hilarious, and spot on. Likewise his advice on how to curtail tantrums.
But there were a few things that we definitely did not see eye to eye on (ex: vegetables are NOT "overrated" in my opinion, and darnit my kid's gonna eat 'em!) Those of you who are fans of co-sleeping may not like his sleep advice. Another reviewer called these "cultural differences," and I agree the book does not really take them into account. Take this advice with a grain of salt and go with your gut.
But if your kid just vomited and then went back outside to play like he was fine, leaving you a little puzzled and panicked about what to do, this book is for you. And get a copy for the grandparents' house, too.
Great for the whole family.......2007-05-26
This is the best medical guide I found for my child. I use it for my husband and me too. Efficiently written, it gets to the point so you can find the information you need quickly, which is important when your child is sick. It is very thorough and has covered every topic I've needed.
A Must Have.......2007-05-21
I have brought 8 or 9 copies of this book and given them as gifts to new moms. They all have found the book useful, especially the first time breast feeding moms. The book was recommended to me when I had my daughter and it helped me so much. My daughter is now 3 and most recently with the allergy season upon us, I foud myself looking up the treatment and dosage for itchy and runny noses.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful little book, but the recipes are quite complicated.......2005-03-29
I read so many reviews about the Wei-Chuan cooking school series, I had to buy this one. After reading through the recipes twice, there are so few I think I could actually make. I'm not doubting its authenticity, but I think if I had the money, I would have to attend the Wei-Chuan cooking school in Taiwan to learn how to make these recipes.
A Wonderful Introduction To The Field of Taiwanese Cuisine.......2005-03-21
I was born and raised in Taiwan. Wei-Chuan was a household name like Kraft Food is here in America. It is as difficult for non-Chinese to diffrentiate Taiwanese cuisine as it is to find a authentic Taiwanese restaurant here in the US. Finding this cookbook not only cures my homesick, but also shows my husband (an italian, with whom, from time to time, I still argue over who invented pasta.)and friends the art and taste of Taiwanese dishes. My husband says that he will refuse to eat out at local Chinese restaurants if I keep making the dishes in the book. Oh by the way, if you have the book, definitely try the "Leek Turnovers". I grew up eating them, totally savory.
Authentic Taiwanese Recipes.......2005-01-05
I love this cookbook! I'm Taiwanese American and was raised in the US. I thought my mother made up these dishes growing up, but in fact they are classic Taiwanese dishes. I have recently moved from the west coast to the mid-south and missed these dishes very much. I was so ecstatic to find recipes I remember so fondly as a child. Taiwanese cooking is different than Chinese cooking. It relies more on seafood and natural flavors. The recipes are also very easy to make.
one of the few good Taiwanese cookbooks around.......2003-01-28
This cookbook is about TAIWANESE cuisine not CHINESE. I searched high and low for this book, there have been many books written about Chinese food but not Taiwanese food which has more flavors -- not just salty but sweet, spicy, etc. This is what makes Taiwanese food different and incredibly delicious. The book has beautiful mouthwatering recipes and pictures and are simple enough to make if you can find all the ingredients.
If you are Taiwanese or like Taiwanese food, this is the cookbook to get because sadly, you will not find too many out there.
great for those of us who like Taiwanese food.......2002-07-24
This is a great cookbook...my husband is Norwegian and he likes Chinese food. We dont have many Chinese food here, so I often make food at home. He loves the dishes! He is skepical over some dishes, but he likes most of them. The cookbook makes it easier for both of us since I am a Taiwanese who misses Taiwanese food terribly and my husband who enjoys Asian food. Afterall, this is a nice cookbook and has easy to follow instructions.

Good Product.......2007-05-15
This book has helped me a great deal with the diagnosis of my canine. I would suggest it to anyone facing these diseases.
Book Review.......2007-03-09
This book was exceptional in the help it provided with my newly sick dogs. I was able to find many ways to help them and me through this.
An Excellent Guide.......2006-11-03
I am a veterinary assistant, but by no means an expert on diabetes in dogs. My heart sank when one of my dogs was diagnosed with diabetes with an initial glucose level of 570. I was shocked, since she was neither overweight, was on a high fiber diet, plenty of exercise and is a mutt. We were in good shape.
As soon as she was diagnosed with diabetes I purchased this book and have to say it was a God sent. It took away my fears of her not being able to live a normal , active, happy life. It is very reassuring to know that Caroline Levin is a registered nurse and most of all has had the experience of having had a dog with diabetes. She has done all the research for us with dogs with Diabetes, Panceatitis, Cushing's Disease etc.. This book is so comprehensive that it answered all of my questions.
My dog is happy and active and with a few lifestyle changes we are in good shape again.
Thank you Ms. Levin for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Dogs, Diet & Disease: An Owner's Guide to Diabetes Mellitus, Pancreatitis, Cushing's Disease, & More.......2006-11-01
Informative book especially for someone who has a dog with one of the abovementioned diseases. It helped me understand more about diabetes and what I should do to best take care of my dog.
This book turned sorrow into solutions.......2006-07-23
Having just been diagnosed this year with diabetes, my beloved Coco and I were struggling with the newness of our changed routine, diet, schedule etc. This book helped educate me and put it all in perspective and find the right program for Coco.
Understanding led to action which led to strength and control of our new situation. A must read for all canine diabetes families.

Book Description
In 1987, Te Ata (1895-1995) became the first person ever declared an "Oklahoma Treasure." Throughout a sixty-year career, her performances of American Indian folklore enchanted a wide variety of audiences, from European royalty to Americans of all ages, and Indians from across the American continents from Canada to Peru.
Richard Green's beautifully written biography of Te Ata is based on extensive research in the artist's personal papers, memorabilia, and the letters and photographs exchanged between Te Ata and her husband, Clyde Fisher.

Great Book.......2003-10-22
This book was an outstanding read! I had never heard of Te Ata before, and knew very little about Chickasaws. I heard about this book from several of my colleagues and I was captivated by it. Richard Green does an exceptional job writing of the life of an american princess!
A Great Read!.......2003-04-05
Richard Green has captured the spirit of independence and the Native American in this fabulous collection of pages from Te Ata's diary and notes from her husband Clyde Fisher.
