Customer Reviews:
NOT ON OF BRAUNS BEST.......2007-02-10
I've read some of the Braun series cat books and this one wasn't one of my favorites. It was boring with no plot and it did mention very little about the Butterfly Girl or who she is. The story didn't make any sense at all. I couldn't get into this one. I read it but was disappointed in it. I'm lucky that I only paid $1 for it towards charity.
Yum Yum Goes Cuckoo for a Yo-Yo.......2006-09-21
Once again we tune in on the denizens of Moose County and find all in an uproar. In fact there are several uproars going on in this cozy neighborhood located 400 miles north of everywhere. First there is the new art center which most people love but the director somehow expects the farmers in the vicinity to keep their dirt off of the roads. When it rains you see, that dirt becomes mud and eventually gets tracked into the art center. Worse yet, the library has gotten rid of their card catalog and replaced it with a computer. This little innovation even sparks a demonstration complete with a grill for burning protestor's library cards.
Amid all of the normal Pickax City hubbub resides the ever-affable Jim Qwilleran and his mystery solving cats Koko and Yum Yum. In this entry in the series Koko has taken to singing like a bird and communing with his bird friends as often as he can. He has also been on the case again after a suspicious fire claims the life of one of Pickax's oldest citizens. The authorities rule that the fire started with a kerosene heater but Qwill doesn't buy it and neither does Koko. Yum Yum for her part is happy playing with her new yo-yo.
Eventually of course everything works out and as in previous books Qwill looks back to see just how precise Koko's clues were. For those new to the series Koko, although talented can't talk but he tries to tell Qwill what has happened in some odd ways. Usually however Qwill doesn't figure out Koko's clues until he has solved the mystery on his own. The best thing about this series besides the wonderful cast of characters is that the reader gets the same clues as does Qwilleran and if one pays very close attention Koko will tell you who done it long before the solution is revealed.
Overall this book, while enjoyable is just a little darker than most of the previous entries, although the body count is fairly low especially compared to some of its predecessors. I can't put my finger on the difference but there is a slightly different tone to this book and it is not an altogether welcome change. On the other hand this is still a very fun and entertaining read and this is a book that should be on every cozy mystery lover's bookshelf.
A trudge through Moose County.......2006-05-25
It has been a long time since I last read a "Cat Who" book, but I seem to recall them being more interesting than this one. It is difficult to tell the backdrop from the foreground of the story, the backdrop of Moose county occupies much more time than the foreground, though it is interwoven. Qwill seems to follow the mystery much more than participate in it and the background characters have much more appeal than those intimately involved with the mystery, the primary of which we only meet briefly or know of through the accounts of others. This makes it difficult to really care about their fate, and thus the story.
for Moose County content 4 for anyone else.......2004-01-23
Jim Qwilleran, newspaper columnist and wealthiest man in Moose County (400 miles north of everywhere) finds himself involved in another round of mysteries. This time an eccentric Moose County old timer dies under circumstances that make Qwill suspicious. Aided by hints dropped by Koko, his Siamese cat, Qwill begins to unravel the mystery and is led into a tangle involving county corruption, love affairs and greed. As always Qwill and Koko manage to solve the crimes even though the usual Moose County events intrude.
For fans of the series there are many Moose County moments to savor. There is enough mystery here to satisfy fans of the general cozy genre as well.
Koko and the birds are funny.......2001-07-08
I loved this book. It was cute and adorable and a good mystery. I love Qwill's relationship with his cats. Lilian Jackson Braun has a neat way of writing (such as "Qwilleran ... made a dive for the Moose County telephone directory" and "His housemates obviously felt neglected, however. Their motto was: when unhappy, tear something up. The interior of the barn had been given the confetti treatment." and "Koko was bleating his new lament: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa." She makes me laugh often. The characters are interesting and I like the town of Pickax.
Book Description
Reading a Cat Who . . . novel by Lilian Jackson Braun is "like dropping in on old and very dear friends" (The Tampa Tribune-Times). This delightful omnibus edition offers a rare chance for an extended visit with reporter Jim Qwilleran and his extraordinary Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum. The most unusual team in detective fiction follows trails of clues as elusive as a cat burglar in these stories, taking crime-solving to a new level.
Book Description
From the death-world of Fenris come the Space Wolves, the most savage of the Emperor's Space Marines. Ragnar's Claw explores the bloody beginnings of Space Wolf Ragnar's first mission as a young Blood Claw warrior. From the jungle hell of the planet Galt to the sprawling polluted cities of Hive World Venam, Ragnar's mission takes him on an epic trek across the galaxy to face the very heart of Evil itself. A searing new epic adventure in the series which began with Space Wolf.
Customer Reviews:
Ragnar's first off-world mission. Fun and exciting........2007-05-20
This book tells of Ragnar Blackmane's first adventure off-world of Fenris. He and his claw are sent to assist an inquisitor on a mission to collect an ancient artifact and save a hive city from a deadly plague. Their mission takes them through vast distances to fight orks, genestealers, and daemons in a multitude of different environments. The character of Ragnar is further developed, with him again being critically wounded only to be revived with a new fear of mortality. There is an undercurrent of uneasiness throughout the book that is only explained in the last couple of chapters as the heroes discover the true puppeteer of their mission.
The fighting scenes and descriptions of the Space Wolf Space Marines are excellent, and as Ragnar discovers the vastness of the Imperium the reader develops a better understanding too. Perhaps the best aspect of this book is the sheer epic feel. The multitude of enemies Ragnar encounters and the vast spaces he travels make this stand out as an excellent resource for those wishing to learn more about the WH40K world. The only complaints I have with the story arise from the writing of King. He tends to over-use descriptive words and phrases, creating a very repetitive feel to some of the scenes.
Overall, this is a fun and interesting read that you'll enjoy if you're ok with some cases of poor writing style.
Good Read.......2007-02-16
This is a good book. As an avid 40k player and fan, it is a really good read. There is a lot that is conflicting with what you find in codexes and other sources, but it really doesn't subtract from the storyline. You really don't need to read the first book in the series to understand this one, but I'm sure it'll help.
Also, who ever knew that the Great Unclean Ones of Nurgle were British?
A reveiw on Ragnar's Claw........2002-03-14
Although i am a Tyranid collector (Giant bugs) i found this tale of the young blood claw , Ragnar Blackmane , extremly exciting and quite easy to read.
One of the extremely few negative aspects about it is that if you don't know a lot about Warhammer or Games Workshop products then you cannot understand the book.
It is very good fun to see the plot unravel as they release the Demon and one of the inquisitors reveals his Chaos tendencies and is promoted to the status of Demon Prince in honor of Nurgle (The Chaos god of disease and pestilance).
In conclusion i think that this book is very , very good book.
I dont know about you but this book was cool.......2002-01-28
this book was action packed. It showed how bad ass the Space marines are and had them killing every one. The plot was good and if your a fan of Warhammer 40k you should love this book i wish the 1st one space wolf was like Ragnar's Claw.
Wolves.......2001-08-31
No relation but I'm a bit of a space Wolves fan. The Space Marines are meant to be hard fanatical worriers who's training and life style has desensitized them to basic human notions. I liked the supper human world of sub human emotion. King caught this well in a book I feel out stepped the first Space Wolves.
This book is a must to anyone interested on the 40k universe.
Ragnar shows a mavric chapter unlike that of Ultra Marine, This book gives atmosphere and insight but would be aimed more for people interested in Warhammer 40k them general public. Not to be judged in 50 pages.

Like Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's groundbreaking On Death and Dying, Susan Anderson's book clearly defines the five phases of a different kind of grieving--grieving over a lost relationship. An experienced professional who has specialized in helping people with loss, heartbreak, and abandonment for more than two decades, Susan Anderson gives this subject the serious attention it deserves. The Journey From Abandonment to Healing is designed to help all victims of emotional breakups--whether they are suffering from a recent loss, or a lingering wound from the past; whether they are caught up in patterns that sabotage their own relationships, or they're in a relationship where they no longer feel loved. From the first stunning blow to starting over, it provides a complete program for abandonment recovery.
"If there can be a pill to cure the heartbreak of rejection, this book may be it."-- Rabbi Harold Kushner, bestselling author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People
In the tradition of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's On Death and Dying--but dealing with the grief over the loss of a relationship
Helps readers work through the five universal phases of abandonment: shattering, withdrawal, internalizing, rage, lifting
Includes hands-on exercises for managing pain and rediscovering the capacity for love

A book to help you on your path to healthy relationships with lover, family, and friends.......2007-10-09
I am a counselor who has recommended this book to countless numbers of women. If you will actually read the book and work the excercises at the end of each chapter, you will be 80% on your way to an emotionally healhty life. It's time to start figuring out why you keep having unhealthy, unhappy relationships, and change it for the better! This book will do just that for you.
Cheryl Dusty D.Div.
Finally!.......2007-08-14
Finally a book that helps you understand what you are going thru and will ease your pain. I highly, highly recommend it. The best and possibly the only book on abandonment recovery I have found. If it's the only book you read on the subject it will be worth it.
Learning more each day.......2007-06-05
Very informative book on such a personal topic... I learned about ME and why I have the feelings I do on some days and react to certain situations... Can get "heavy" at times, but if healing is the end result, and total honesty is used, worth the "weight" to get the end result.. Thank you for such a new look at this topic.. Anyone suffering from a range of problems such as addictions, co dependency, alcoholism, and fears might consider this the start to their recovery... as I learned abandoment fears or the actual act ( either physical, mental, emotional) is at the root of so many of the disorders today.... Help yourself heal and help the children of those so hurt to keep healthy... Was worth it to me..
A sensitive and thought provoking book of healing and self-development.......2007-05-30
I bought this book based on a name-drop by Ken Wilber on one of his audio CDs for the Kosmic Consciousness series. Part of my job involves dealing with the bereaved, so I am aware of current sociological thought regarding the bereavement cycle of emotional release and mental readjustment, which she terms 'lifting'. What fascinated me about Anderson's approach, was a long overdue reorientation of the importance of abandonment as a driving factor in certain forms of mental illness, that has very limited cultural outlets (as opposed to bereavement). She introduces a similar cycle of emotional healing that is tailored to abandonment, and offers a variety of inspiring ways to uncover underlying pyschologies of narcissistic injury and regression. The book is easy to read, and nourishing enough to absorb more than once!! Truly, a golden nugget - cannot recommend highly enough.
Extremely helpful book.......2007-01-16
I greatly enjoyed reading this book. I think it is the best of several I looked at. It helped explain the weird emotional turmoil I went thru, over a broked heart. It has helped me overcome the problems.

In BEAT THIS!, Hodgman taunted readers: "Are your recipes better than mine? I can't believe it. But if you think your potato salad will make me lie down and dry with shame, send in the recipe." Now Hodgeman presents the winners - including a potato salad that did beat hers. Chockablock with Hodgman's witticisms and pronouncements, this book will have readers laughing aloud as they turn out unbeatable dishes.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Can't Be Beat!.......2007-05-22
This book can't be beat! I know because I contributed the fabulous recipe for orange sherbet that's included in it. (If you think you don't like orange sherbet, that's because you've only tasted the commercial stuff. Comparing my sherbet to that is like comparing champagne to Kool-Aid.) The same goes for the other recipes herein. They may not be low-fat. Ms. Hodgman admits she never met a recipe that couldn't be made better with more butter, bacon, or sugar, so these goodies may not be for everyday consumption. But when you want a dish that will wow company or knock the socks off at the next church supper, this (and the previous volume, Beat This!) is the place to look. And as other reviewers have said, even if you don't intend to cook a single dish out of this cookbook, it's so entertaining and funny to read that you should buy it anyway. I'm one of Ms. Hodgman's greatest fans, and you will be too once you look at a copy of Beat That!
Simply the Best - Part Deux!.......2006-07-12
Taking the best of the best for her second book, Hodgman compiles a delectable collection of recipes aimed to please the most discriminating palate and dares you to find something better. Few do, but Ann gives them their kudos when it happens. OK, it's not gourmet, low fat or even low-calorie, but this is the best of the best and creative, so who cares about the waistline!!! Run a few extra miles and work it off if you have to, it's worth it.
This is the cookbook I reach for most often when I'm looking for a recipe on a staple or a spin on a classic. Along with recipes, she has funny anecdotes that allow you to get to know her and her family (including her pets), and there's a great index in the back about why fine ingredients should be used and where to buy them. If you're an experienced cook like me, try the recipe 'as is' then tweak it and/or make notes in the margin; if you're relatively new to cooking like my boyfriend, the recipes are easy and fun to follow regardless of experience. But I assure you that most recipes are ab fab 'as is,' particularly the Salmon Spirals, Lumpia, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Orange Sherbert.
Buy it, cook it and let your friends think you're the most amazing cook who ever walked the planet! Mine do. Then go out and buy her "Beat This!" cookbook if you don't already have it and continue the magic.
delicious recipes laced with wittiness.......2005-04-20
I've only made about a half dozen of the recipes in this book but each one is superb and company-worthy. You'll NEVER have to worry ever again about what to take to the next pot-luck luncheon at work. The author concentrates mainly on dishes we grew up with, comfort foods, etc. A sampling: cheese straws, meatloaf, apple crisp, great gravy, edible playdough(!), mom-style chicken salad, grape ice cream, best banana bread (it really is!!), shrimp salad, etc. A huge plus is the author's very funny remarks on almost every page. Buy this book........you won't be sorry.......except for your expanding waistline.
Ann Hodgman is a wonderful author.......2003-05-16
Ann Hodgman's cookbooks blend humor with recipes that are simple and familiar. I grew up with food like this and it is comforting to have it presented in a way that is peppered with humor.
How can one *not* love a cookbook dedicated to Keanu Reeves?.......2003-01-06
With Beat That!, Ann Hodgman continues her fight for culinary supremacy, even if it is only in her own mind. This book is every bit as funny and as good as its predecessor, Beat This!, with the added fillip of Hodgman admitting when she's been beaten, as she does by printing a reader's recipe for "superior" potato salad. Even though this salad contains the always low-rent Miracle Whip, Hodgman allows that it's better than her potato salad because it contains both sausage AND bacon. Yes, she was bested by smoked meats, and happily concedes the battle. What a gal. Buy this book.

Kudos from a Contributor to Beat That.......2007-08-13
I contributed the recipe for orange buttermilk sherbet that is in "Beat That", Ann Hodgman's second volume of the very best recipes in existence (get vol. 1 "Beat This" as well). This is a cookbook you'll really cook out of and will tell all your friends about, not only because the recipes are great, but because she's also a hilarious writer. And in the hot dog days of summer, don't forget to make a batch of my fabulous orange buttermilk sherbet. You'll love it.
Beat That! Really is unbeatable........1998-10-20
How do we, as people who love practical and fun cookbooks, go about getting the first Hodgman cookbook, "Beat This!" back into print? It is a must for cooks who are serious about good food but not into creating new religions around spices and cuisines. "Beat That" is a continuation of the fun -- and Hodgman is the best of all possible cookbook writers, one who doesn't take herself seriously ALL the time. Actually, I want to BE Ann Hodgman.
Almost impossible to beat.......1998-09-29
What a shame Ann Hodgman's first cookbook, Beat This, is now out of print. Coupled with its newer sister, the duo would have made the perfect bridal shower gift for a dear friend. The recipies are great, and often feature unusual twists on old favorites, that really do make the recipies unbeatable. Equally as important, they do not involve esoteric ingredients, over complicated or fussy cooking techniques. Just plain good eating without unnecessary fuss.
Beat That! beats all - the best cookbook ever cooked up........1997-03-25
I have about a million cookbooks. Most of them sit forlornly on the shelf, like last year's Tickle Me Elmo, as they see "Beat That" (and its predecessor, "Beat This) used time and time again. Every time I see either of these cookbooks in a store, I buy it, knowing that I'm going to find someone to give it to - and that that person will subsequently be indebted to me forever for introducing them to such completely, wonderfully swoon-able food. YOU MUST BUY THIS COOKBOOK

Merrill Markoe, the creator of "Stupid Pet Tricks," won four Emmy awards for her work on the David Letterman show. In these sidesplitting essays--from "The Wacky World of Men" to "An Insider's Guide to the American Woman" to "Showering with Your Dog"--she reveals what she's learned about life from "dogs, celebrities, bachelors, and other beasts."
In Markoe's words, "I pick dogs that remind me of myself--scrappy, mutt-faced, with a hint of mange. People look for a reflection of their own personalities or the person they dream of being in the eyes of an animal companion. That is the reason I sometimes look into the face of my dog Stan and see wistful sadness and existential angst, when all he is actually doing is slowly scanning the ceiling for flies."
Following a collection of sparkling chapters on cultural phenomena--from the "Creeping Gabor Syndrome" (the terror of turning into Zsa Zsa Gabor) to what happens to you when you live alone (and the eight things you can do because there's no one there to stop you)--the last chapter outlines the many lessons Markoe has learned from her dogs: "If you see something you want, and all your other attempts at getting it have failed, it is only right to grovel shamelessly. As a second tactic, stare intently at the object of your desire, allowing long gelatinous drools to leak like icicles from your lips."
Book Description
Award-winning comedy writer Merrill Markoe, the slightly warped mind behind
Stupid Pet Tricks, is an old hand with dogs. She knows who’s boss (they are) and the myriad ways a loving pet can make you feel guilty twenty-four hours a day. This new edition of Merrill Markoe’s classic collection of humorous essays gives readers the choicest selections along with brand-new material.
In these razor-sharp essays, Markoe recounts her dogs’ phone chats with animal communicators, her search for past lives, and her brief stint as a stun gun saleswoman. She describes the workshop that taught her how to launch an Internet porn business and another that gave proper instruction in the esoteric art of becoming a dominatrix.
She shares insight into what it is like to structure your day using only dog rules, how to spot a really horrible restaurant, and what it’s like to have a romantic dinner with Fabio. There’s even a bright side to preparing for the apocalypse: “At last, it is time to forget about fat grams and low cholesterol.” This enchantingly rambunctious and boundlessly enjoyable book gives you Merrill Markoe at her best. You’ll devour it in one sitting (and so may your pet).
Customer Reviews:
Merrill Markoe at her best!.......2007-07-30
I bought TWO copies of this - - one for me - - I LOVE Merrill's work, and one for a friend who was home recuperating from knee surgery. We shared our thoughts on her funniest essays! A winner!
AVOID at all costs.......2006-08-02
As a great fan of dog stories, I had enjoyed one of this author's tales excerpted in a dog story anthology, and thought that I might relish more of her work. Was I ever WRONG!!! Half or less of the book was related to canines, and then often remotely. Many of her works (this is a compendium of essays) are spoiled by her frequent use of the most vile, crude, and vulgar expletives, always unnecessary and adding nothing to the story. Although humorous on the rarest of occasions, this tome consists mainly of the mindless babblings of the typically self-loathing liberal. Unfit even as a chew toy for your pup!
Great book. Hilarious. I loved it........2005-03-02
Made me laugh out loud. You can read it in one sitting. Buy it.
buy it.......2005-01-27
This book is so freakin' funny I almost can't stand it. The back of my head aches from laughing. All her writing is perfect. She's the kind of girl you want to hang out with so you start sounding like her after a while.
Laugh Out Loud and Until You're Crying.......1999-05-08
i think this is probably the funniest book i've ever read ... people hearing you laugh while reading this will think you have gone insane and you will want to read it to them ... after reading this, i had hoped that merrill markoe had written dozens of other books, but alas, i only found one other (which was also very funny) ... maybe she'll read this and publish more. hope so.

Product Description
This volume accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, February 4-September 30, 2005. Far more than merely a catalogue of the exhibition, it offers for a wide readership an introduction to the art of late prehistory (around 4000 BC) in Iran and Iraq, by bringing together a range of expressive visual tools-seals, sealings, and painted pottery. The focus is on a time before written expressions of belief, mythology, identity, or administrative documentation, but also a time of ripened recourse to other visual strategies of communication that set the stage for writing as we conceive it. A series of 11 imaginative interpretative essays explores the evidence and the methods we can use to approach an understanding of the role of visual imagery (of signs and symbols) in late prehistory, and to ask questions of this material as a means of approaching possible social meanings. The book is lavishly illustrated, and includes catalogue entries for every object included in the exhibition.
Contents: Part I: Introduction. This Fertile Land. Part II: Iran in the System of Things. An Overview of Place and Space; Seals and Sealings: Archaeological Perspectives. Part III: Signs and Symbols. The Chevron-filled Cross and Early Communicative Systems; Systems of Symbolic Expression; Shamans, Seals, and Magic; Modes of Religious Experience in Late Prehistory; Fertility: Of Snakes, Displayed Females, Scorpions, Tortoises, Frogs. Part IV: Historiography, Archeology, and the Art Market. Problems in Interpreting Late Prehistory; Archaeology and Collecting: Law, Ethics, Politics; Tepe Giyan Lives: Herzfeld's Harvest-Jane Ford Adams's Buttons. Part V. Appendix on Materials Analysis; Catalogue of Artifacts, Didactics, and Images in the Exhibition; Concordance: Artifacts (by Collection) to Catalogue Numbers; Works Cited.
Book Description
A rich source of pictorial information about the Ancient Near East comes to us in the form of miniature reliefs, created from the impressions made in clay by tiny engraved stone seals. Originally used for sealing goods and writing tablets, these seals now provide important evidence for administrative practices, technical development, and long-distance trade. The designs themselves record religious beliefs, mythical characters, architectural styles, musical instruments, festivals, sport, warfare, transportation, and fashions in dress.
In this first comprehensive introduction to pre-Islamic Near Eastern seals, Dominique Collon discusses cylinder seals--a form unique to the Ancient Near East--as well as stamp seals, the earliest dating from the fifth millennium B.C. As a reflection of how their owners saw the world around them, Near Eastern seals are an essential tool for archaeologists in interpreting the past.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to Near Eastern Cylinder seals.......1998-04-01
Collon's book provides an excellent overview of Near Eastern Seals. A useful chronology for both stamp and cylinder seals is provided, as well as information on materials, designs, and stone-cutting techniques. The majority of the photographs and text focus on cylinder seals, but a few stamp seals are also included.
Product Description
Including: sumerian white marble seal with combat scene, early dynastic III; an akkadian lapis lazuli seal with battle of the gods; an akkadian red jasper seal with symbols of the water god; and much more.

Book Description
A modern introduction to the physical principles of electronic ceramic materials. Describes theory in structural terms via the language of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, bridging the gap between purely theoretical solid-state texts and strictly applied materials science texts. Most of the equations employed are derived from first principles. Each chapter describes the relevant properties of the materials covered, presents applications of the theory, and includes a graded set of problems (some to be done on a computer). Adopts the convention of the American Ceramic Society. Contains tables and figures.

Dazzling Word Combo .......2007-08-07
I spend a lot of time reading kids books. This one is my favorite. Kids love it too!!
Wonderful Book.......2007-06-27
Very easy to read particularly as a bedtime story. My toddler has the refrain "Pittery, pattery, skittery, scattery ZIP round the corner came Zachary Quack" completely memorized. Very nicely illustrated as well.
Kids LOVE this book!.......2007-03-30
My 2 boys love this book and all the Hairy Maclary books! This one is just SO cute! They are even starting to read along with me. Highly recommended!
Zachary Quack.......2007-01-12
Hairy is at it again and cuter than ever---anything in this series is great!!
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2006-07-27
My 2 year-old daughter and I found this book by accident at the library and immediately loved it. It's a fun read with great illustrations. Highly recommend it!
Book Description
In Scattercat, Hairy encounters Scarface Claw, who "bothered and bustled him, rustled and hustled him, raced him and chased him all the way home."
Customer Reviews:
Lets Chase Cats.......2005-11-01
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is peppy and bouncy and looking for fun. But what he really wants is something to chase and for a dog that often means cats. Hairy Maclary begins his rampage.
Through the course of the book we are introduced to quite a few of the local feline community. But they are all quickly chased away with only slight effort and no real chance for a good chase. But then Hairy Maclary spots one more twitching tale and a long chase ensues. But who is chasing who?
My kids love the Hairy Maclary books with its colorful illustrations, cute and funny animals, lyrical verse and plenty of fun. This one is somewhat reminiscent of the first in the series (HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON'S DAIRY) but still fresh and a delight. Some of these cats are truly adorable even to do fanciers. Check it out.
Delightful.......2002-01-06
This is a delightful book, the language is great and the pictures wonderful. Most of Lynley Dodd's regular characters such as Slinki Malinki and Scarface Claw make an appearance as Hairy Maclary bounces along through the pages in a boisterous mood. I love reading this one to my three year old niece. The words have a real rhythm to them and the story has just enough suspense to keep little ones interested. I have not yet read a Lynley Dodd book that I don't like - but this one is a real favourite!
Like all Lynley Dodd - great.......2000-03-23
We've been reading this, the hairy MacLary and other Lynley Dodd books for 5 years now....started when my son was about 18 months, and still going strong! There is as much in the language for a 6 year old starting to read on their own as for the shared experience with younger children.
Lynley Dodd and Margaret Mahy MUST be New Zealand National Treasures.
Another great Hairy Maclary book.......1999-09-19
Great rhymes, wonderful words ("bumptious and bustly"...) and a fun, simple tale. A real favouite of my two year old. Another great children's book from a superb author. Highly recommended.
Very easy to read and loved by my 3 year old.......1999-04-20
My three year old loves these stories and I find that he can almost 'read' the book by himself. The way Lynley Dodd rhymes the story makes it very comical to listen to and easy to read. The descriptive and repeatitive vocabulary makes this my boys favourite book to listen to and he has others from the same author. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children between 2 and 10. My friend's children always read this when they come to visit and I have used the stories for many a happy birthday present.

Book Description
Dog starts off the day with one black spot on his ear. But it seems that wherever he goes, he runs, rolls, and trots right into colors. As he wanders around town, Dog collects spots made of red jam, blue paint, pink ice cream, and more. When he finally arrives back home, Dog has ten different colored spots. And then it's bath time for this colorful canine, who makes learning colors and numbers easy, messy, and fun!
Customer Reviews:
Don't forget the sounds.......2006-12-08
In addition to the other review I read, I would like to add that this book has a third component: sounds. There are 1) colors, 2) counting, and 3) sounds. Some of the sounds are splat and squish. There is a different sound for each spot. The other nice thing is a double page review of each spot's color and sound at the end before dog gets a bath.
Wonderful book to teach colors & counting to ten!!.......2006-11-10
I do the local library's storytime each Wednesday and since my audience is mainly toddlers and preschool children, I use this book to learn counting to 10 and colors. I use a felt white dog and felt dots of the colors used in the book and we count right along with the author to see how many spots Dog has now. Really cute illustrations. The kids love it!!
Great book!.......2006-03-07
This is one of my son's favorite books! It is fun and keeps his attention. Reading the book to him is good practice for him with colors and counting. I highly recommend!
LOVE this book!.......2006-02-24
This is the perfect book for the 2-year old set. Colors, numbers, dog - what's not to like? Kids love it for its colorful and fun illustrations and parents don't tire of reading it over and over and over and over. Highly recommend!
A fun way to learn colors and counting.......2004-05-28
My three year old son STILL loves this book which we have been reading for over a year. He now counts to ten and knows all the colors. This book is enjoyable to read to him and I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Born in New Orleans in 1894, Warren "Baby" Dodds became one of the greatest drummers of that city's early jazz tradition. This lively autobiography, first published more than 30 years ago and long unavailable, is the result of a series of interviews Dodds taped with Larry Gara a few years before his death in 1959. With disarming candor, Dodds recalls his remarkable musical career, which spanned more than four decades and took him from New Orleans' famed Storyville district to Mississippi riverboats, to Chicago and New York. Dodds performed and recorded with some of the most famous musicians of his time - King Oliver, Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, among others - and his recollections of these men and the music they created add much to our knowledge of jazz history. Dodds also discusses his own style and philosophy of music, revealing himself as a dedicated artist who placed a high value on craftsmanship, versatility and originality, and whose love of the jazz world never waned. Features 12 pages of photos and a Dodds discography.

If You're A Drummer, Buy It.......2000-04-05
I found this book to reveal a very interesting character, with a look inside early American Jazz and the life-style of an Afro-American in the south. Baby Dodds was truly a remarkable person, and very charismatic, although I did feel his recall was skewed at times and wish we had more first hand observances on his place in drumming history.

Scarface Claw in Trouble.......2005-11-01
Scarface Claw is the toughest tom in town, but even he can meet his match. After chasing a few small animals, he sets out after a blackbird high in a tree and gets stuck. So begins the caterwauling.
Hairy Maclary (from Donaldson's Dairy) and his friends (Hercules Morse, Bottomley Potts, Schnitzel Vonn Krumm, etc.) are each disturbed by the strange sound. Each goes to investigate what could be making the terrible noise. Together they find out. But what happens when the toughest tom in town is finally rescued? Does he chase the dogs like usual, hide in shame, pretend he meant to do that? Read and find out.
Lynley Dodd's verse and pacing proves as fresh as ever in this adventure of New Zealand's favorite scruffy little dog. Fans of his friends will be pleased that the rest of the dogs in town are also present. Check out all of the Hairy Maclary books.
Hairy Maclary's Caterwaul Caper.......2001-03-01
I'm very sad that the Hairy Maclary books are no longer available in paperback. Our family has 3 Hairy Maclary paperbacks and would like to purchase more. We LOVE the books. The stories are great and the pictures are beautiful.
Caterwaul together!.......2001-01-15
Our 3 children have loved this book with all the different dogs and the sounds they make. One child makes the yowling cat sound and I do the dogs. They occasionally join in and it can become very entertaining. It just depends on how mellow or raucous you want to be. The story is simple but cute and the rhyming is creative and catchy.
Wonderful sound effects.......2000-10-24
Before even thinking about reading this one aloud, grab a really big glass of water. All the dogs from the first Hairy Macleary are back and making all sorts of barks, and then there's the sound that echoes around...
If you haven't read any Hairy Macleary yet (and why not!!?), they are great read-aloud stories with plenty of tumpity rhythm and rhymes. (Not to say that you can't secretly grab one and read it quietly, too.)
fun to read for you and the kids.......2000-09-20
I'm so sad that this book hasn't gotten more press! My daughter is 4 now, and we've been reading it since she was about 2. The animal noises are fun to make and hear, and the pictures fit the descriptions perfectly! We particularly like the fact that you can see the dog's tail on the right hand page as it is going to investigate the horrible cacaphony. Give it a chance!
