A MASTER STORYTELLER
To recognize the year of Michael Gilbert's ninetieth birthday, Crippen & Landru is proud to publish this new collection of stories. The Curious Conspiracy and Other Crimes gathers together twenty previously uncollected stories including almost unknown tales about Inspectors Hazlerigg and Petrella, and stories of blackmail, murder, and revenge. The settings range from elegant (but dangerous) wine cellars in France and England, to a soundproofed room inhabited by a dictator, to early nineteenth century Spain, to a deadly shooting range.
The Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection describes Gilbert as "one of the finest of the post-World War II generation of detective story writers." One of the master storytellers of our times, Gilbert displays his seemingly effortless characterization, his use of authentic detail, and, above all, his ability to engage the reader from the first sentence.
The Mystery Writers of America recognized Gilbert's contributions with its highest honor, the Grand Master Award. The introduction is by the author, and the cover design by Deborah Miller.

Must read for all sci-fi and fantasy readers.......1996-12-24
Anne Kelleher Bush has done it again. The Misbegotten King ties up everything from the first two books and then some. The power in her writing comes through in everything from the relationships between the characters and the strategy between warring armies. Her blending of fantasy and science fiction is fresh and exciting. This book is a must read for everyone who has read the first two books and those who haven't. Dianne Miller (TRDZ95A@prodigy.com
Book Description
The splendor and beauty of a child’s growth and development in the womb--seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology
What’s happening with the baby now? All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy. Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.
The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed: the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.
All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body. Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle. The result is an ability to illuminate the unseen elements that make us who we are, and the miraculous images in From Conception to Birth.

Wow! Impressive photos AND dialouge!.......2007-06-18
I hesitated to buy this book because I heard some of the negative reviews, such as "the Nielson book is better" and "the images are fake, clay". However, I found it is more MUCH more informative and interesting than "A Child Is Born". It is modern, cleverly written, and really worthwhile as a coffe table book or baby shower gift. The format of the book is mostly photograph/art, with small paragraphs of information. My husband has been reading this book about what is happening to the baby every morning at breakfast, because it is written day by day, which is different than most pregnacy guides. It is free from advice, it is only factual.
A Life Unfolds.......2007-05-25
I was very happy with the book. The photographs were amazing!
Good.......2007-01-20
The photography is definitely the highlight of this book. It also gives you a great biology review. Perhaps more than the average person would want to know. My only criticism is that it focused more on the embryonic development than on fetal development. I realize that most of the fascinating transformations occur in the first trimester but I still was hoping to see great photos of the second and third. I preferred Beginning Life by Geraldine Flanagan to this book.
As incredible as being pregnant!.......2007-01-10
This book has got all the info you need when you are expecting. The pictures are so cool, my son loved to look at them to see what his sibling looked like at each stage. Very informative and eye opening!
From Conception to Birth.......2007-01-03
Amazing pictures! Great for future parents, parents or for anyone else who have interest in learning a bit more.

Coffee Table Cookbook.......2005-01-20
This book has great food photography, but as another reviewer stated it is mostly a "coffee table" book. My wife is a Filipina, and she says that Alejandro has taken most of his recipes from his older books and "recycled" them into this one. If you want "hands-on" Philippine recipes, this may not be what you are looking for. It is a great book if you only collect cookbooks but don't use them much.
pretty pictures..........2005-01-09
I am always looking for good Filipino cookbooks. I was delighted to find this while I was browsing until...I looked through the book. It has pretty pictures, it definitely made me think of the Philippines. But I was hoping for a more substantial cookbook, one with more recipes, one I can actually use as a cookbook. This is more of a coffee table book, made to tantalize and not quite functional. It has pretty pictures...
Simply delicious.......2003-01-11
A very good book that not only provides a history on Philippine cuisine, but a surprisingly comprehensive collection of favorite Filipino dishes that is simple to follow.
If you are looking for a book about Filipino dishes, you won't go wrong with this one.
The Food of the Philippines.......2001-05-16
This book help me a lot and it's very encouraging to see a picture of what you'll be cooking so you know how it would look like. It has a substitute ingredients too, if you can't find some oriental ingredients. I recommend this to people who love to cook Asian foods. The best so far with the Filipino recipe books that I've used.

Book Description
Why buy expensive embroidered heirlooms when it's so simple to make them yourself? From tracing and transferring designs, to the needles required for stitching, to the threads that "draw" out your pattern, this richly illustrated guide contains hundreds of easy-to-follow hints and techniques. Detailed drawings cover every stitch in the book--bullion, buttonhole, chain, whipped chain, colonial knot, lazy daisy, ladder, pistil, and coral, feather, and fly stitches. There's even an entire section on embroidering flowers: wool roses, camellias, lemon gum blossoms, lavender, buttonhole, and flannel flowers, buds, and leaves. Try out your new skills on thirteen wonderful wool projects, all elaborately explained and illustrated. A cozy, comfy baby's blanket shows Mrs. Mouse taking her little one out for a walk; daisies, forget-me-nots, and many other flowers bloom everywhere. Stitch bears onto coat hangers, and wildflowers onto a baby basket. A complete christening set is the ultimate heirloom: it includes an embroidered bow to go around a candle, towels, coat hanger, and more! 128 pages, 20 color illus., 30 b/w illus., 8 1/2 x 11 1/2.

Informative Introduction to Wool Embroidery.......2001-02-11
Wool embroidery, a very popular craft in Australia, is just making inroads into the American market.
This book, in the Milner Craft Series, is a great introduction to the craft. The book contains 14 projects ranging from quick-stitch coathangers, to beautiful heirloom baby blankets.
Instructions are clear and well written, and include stitch diagrams and color pictures of the completed projects.
The book would appeal to the novice stitcher, as well as the more advanced embroiderer looking for something different to stitch.
I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
No Japanese artist is more famous or more beloved than the 19th-century master of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Yet one important dimension of his work has never received the attention it merits-the fan print. This exquisitely illustrated volume celebrates the outstanding collection of Hiroshige fan prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the largest known holding of its kind in the world.
Published here in its entirety for the first time, the Hiroshige collection at the V&A consists of 126 vivid and varied fan prints, all of which are remarkable for their vibrant colors and striking design. Depicting courtesans in gorgeous costumes, domestic architecture, and rural scenes with flowers and birds, the prints offer compelling insights into Japanese life. Hiroshige's rich, poetic works are as captivating today as when they were first created; they will delight collectors, students of Japanese culture, and all lovers of Japanese art.

Hiroshige"s Fan Prints: R. Faulkner.......2005-09-20
I never received this book due to an error inavailability on the seller"s part.
a small gem with great depth and beauty.......2002-01-08
Modestly sized in comparison to most books on Japanese woodblock prints and relatively modest in its scope, "Hiroshige's Fan Prints" could easily be overlooked. But this book--another gem in the Victoria & Albert's series on its Japanese art collection--is worth both a second look and a prized place in your library. The book has beautiful reproductions of more than 125 color prints that the artist Hiroshige created in the nineteenth-century for mounting on the stiff "uchiwa" fans used in the summer months. The text reflects the careful research and clear writing of Rupert Faulkner, the assistant curator of the V&A's Japanese collection. Each text entry provides a richly detailed-mix of information about the artistic quality, substantive symbolism, and literary allusions (where applicable) of each print reproduced. The identification of censor, dating, and publishing seals and a frank assessment of which pieces are likely restrikes provide an added bonus: guideposts for any collector of "ukiyoe" prints who seeks to develop an educated eye for quality and authenticity.
Full colour reproductions of ALL the V&A Hiroshige Fans........2001-06-30
If you are interested in Japanese woodblock prints or collect fans then you MUST buy this book. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London (V&A) holds the world's largest collection of Hiroshige fan prints (126 prints).
All the prints in the museum's collection are reproduced in full colour in this book. Where the prints have been identified in a series, they are shown in that order in the book, and also in date and subject order.
This book has been long overdue for both people interested in Hiroshige and for fan collectors, and what we have here is a both a gorgeous book, and a great source of knowlege and for reference.

Book Description
This scholarly biography is the first book-length volume to examine the life and work of Charles Banks, Booker T. Washington's chief "lieutenant" in Mississippi, who became the most consequential African American leader in the state and one of the South's most influential black businessmen in the early decades of the twentieth century.
David H. Jackson, Jr., presents a new perspective on Booker T. Washington and the Tuskegee Machine that counters its more familiar image as conniving, heavy-handed, intolerant, and ruthless. In a rare look at the machine's inner workings, the book discusses the benefits of membership and the often-unacknowledged fact that involvement with the machine was mutually beneficial for Washington and his supporters. Jackson argues convincingly that Washington did not keep his key men, "lieutenants" like Charles Banks, on a leash; indeed, his effectiveness depended largely on these figures, who promoted his agenda in various states. Part of Banks's significance was his success in delivering Washington's program in a way that was palatable to blacks in the South--especially in Mississippi, a state historically known for its economic deprivation and racial unrest.
The book also presents the first comprehensive golden-age history of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, an all-black township that Banks's business acumen helped shape economically.
Contrary to the accommodationist view, Jackson profiles Banks through a constructionist framework to reveal a strong yet conflicted black leader and follower of Washington. His development was shaped by rural poverty, white supremacy, the dominant influence of the philosophy and personal power of Washington, and the concept of the all-black town as a strategy for avoiding some of the worst economic and psychological effects of discrimination.
