Book Description
It was a winter morning in 1978, that the body of a young barmaid was discovered in the snow banks of a Scottish cemetery. The only suspects in her brutal murder were the four young men who found her: Alex Gilbey and his three best friends. With no evidence but her blood
on their hands, no one was ever charged.
Twenty five years later, the Cold Case file on Rosie Duff has been reopened. For Alex and his friends, the investigation has also opened old wounds, haunting memories-and new fears. For a stranger has emerged from the shadows with his own ideas about justice. And revenge.
When two of Alex's friends die under suspicious circumstances, Alex knows that he and his innocent family are the next targets. And there's only way to save them: return to the cold-blooded past and uncover the startling truth about the murder. For there lies the identity of an avenging killer...

One of the decades finest mystery writers!.......2007-07-27
I got "hooked" on Val McDermid after watching "Wire in the Blood," a detective series on BBC about a psychologist who profiles for the British police. McDermid has written an excellent series of books about the two characters, Dr. Tony Hill and Chief Inspector Carol Jordan. However, The Distant Echo is one of McDermid's finest novels, in my opinion, and does not involve these characters. The story is about four teenagers who are accused of raping and murdering a young girl. They are never convicted of the crime, but its horror insinuates itself into each of their lives in insidious and unique ways. The characterizations are incredibly well done; the writing is phenomenal; and the plot kept me completely engrossed, night after night. I didn't want it to end.
Aftermath of murder.......2007-04-05
I listened to this book on tape. I highly recommend the unabridged recording. The narrator has the perfect Scottish accent, easy to follow and greatly adding to the novel's atmosphere. I was totally engrossed by the end of side one of the first tape. Four Scottish college students, on their way home from a party, find a dying girl. They are the only suspects and remain targets of police investigation and revengeful relatives for years. Twenty-five years after the murder it becomes apparent that someone is after the original suspects with deadly intent. The novel kept me guessing well into the second half. Even when I figured it out, there was still plenty of suspense to keep me listening with rapt attention until the very satisfying conclusion.
A very good read from a very good contemporary mystery writer........2007-01-14
This is a top-notch book by a very good contemporary mystery writer. She creates dybamic, multi-faceted characters and is a great plotter. This is one about 4 friends who are, when students, the suspects in a sex-related murder. But the case is not resolved and the years pass. There is someone taking revenge on the murder, the police reinvestigating the case and ... . Not to be missed; a writer who mixes successfully the old and the new in the mystery genre.
Moved awfully slow for a mystery.......2007-01-10
Several friends had recommended Val McDermid to me and so I finally got around to picking up one of her books at the local library.
In "The Distant Echo" McDermid gives us the story of a foursome of coming-of-age college mates in Scotland, walking home thoroughly drunk after a party. They literally stumble across the body of Rosie Duff, a young barmaid from the village who has been brutalized and left to bleed to death. But by the time the police arrive, she has died and the boys immediately move from being good samaritans to being suspects. Ultimately, there isn't anything other than circumstantial evidence linking the boys to the crime and they go free, but not before their reputations have been so tarnished that they are nearly run out of town. They spend the next 25 years trying to forget the events of that fateful night, mostly without success, when suddenly two of the four are murdered within days of one another. The remaining two quickly become convinced that the murders are not coincidence, but the work of Rosie's original killer, coming back to cover his tracks.
While McDermid serves up a whodunnit in this book, I have to admit that I figured out who the killer was in the first third of the book and the remainder just seemed to plod along until the final few chapters where she finally revealed the killer's identity...about 20 chapters too late for me. The only thing that really took me by surprise was a small plot twist that, while obvious in retrospect, had allowed the real killer to escape detection for so long.
Even if I had not figured out the killer so early on, this book still would have moved interminably slowly for me. McDermid is a fine writer - make no mistake. I just found the pace to be maddeningly slow. One of the characters in the novel - a journalist - complained at one point of there being nothing worse than getting the information you came for early in an interview, and then having to sit through another two hours of tedium when the fact you want is already in-hand. That largely sums up how I felt about this book and McDermid would have been wise to take the lament of her character to heart. It could have been 200 pages shorter and accomplished the same thing without feeling rushed, truncated, or selling the characters short.
One thing I did enjoy about this book was the setting. It takes place in Scotland and the dialect, figures of speech, landmarks, and banalities of life from a different culture were interesting. It wasn't long before I could hear the characters' Scottish accents and felt immersed in their lives. Unfortunately, this enjoyable aspect of the book was more than offset by McDermid's portrayal of Christians. One of the main characters becomes a Christian and the author seizes on the conversion experience to turn one of the more interesting individuals in the book into little more than a cardboard cutout. I can often tell whether a writer is a Christian or not simply by the way they portray Christians. Those with little understand of what it is to be a Christian either serve up a self-righteous stereotype or someone who somehow ceases to become human after their conversion. In this novel, McDermid gives us both and just continues to hammer it home every time the character makes an appearance. It was quite embarrassing really, and did not reflect well on McDermid. Christians are real people, capable of more than just pious platitudes, a fact of which McDermid seems to be unaware. Perhaps her entire exposure to Christians is via American TV evangelists that make it onto the British airwaves...I'm not sure, but her bias was simply too blatant to ignore.
All in all, McDermid strikes me as having the potential to deliver 5-star books, but she failed to do so here. I'll probably read one or two more, but if they move as slowly as this one and if she serves up more stereotypes like she did in this one, I'll move on to others in this genre rather than sticking with her.
Slow start for me.......2006-09-21
I didn't find the characters appealing at the start so I had trouble getting interested. So much time spent on unappealing people.

A further education.......2007-01-11
About six months ago I was told that I had osteopenia and almost went into a panic. This book educated me on the possible ways that this condition could be reversed before more bone loss could occur. The book was clear and concise in discussing natural approaches, nutrition and scientific studies and how to apply them in everyday life to obtain possitive results.
Extremely helpful book.......2006-11-13
Even though this book was published in 1994 and thus doesn't include some of the latest research on osteoporosis, I found it incredibly helpful in understanding this disease as well as other health issues I face. Because it addresses other health issues, it helped me to understand how one problem may impact bone health, though it may not necessarily be the direct cause of osteoporosis. I was particularly impressed with the section on food allergies and want to try to implement his elimination diet in some way. I have long suspected that I have some other food allergies and wonder if they might be a contributing factor to the osteoporosis? Since I am also hypothyroid I appreciated his discussion of this issue, also the constant references to absorption and resorption.
It is one of the few health books I have read from cover to cover in the last few months. There is a lot of information in the book. I did occasionally find some of the explanations a bit technical for me, but it showed me that the writer has a good understanding of the topics he discusses, and I am sure they are helpful to other readers. I certainly would not let that stop me from highly recommending this book. I also appreciated his discussion of the medical profession's resistance to alternative healing.
Out of Date and Not Evidence Based.......2006-10-17
This book was published in 1995 (so of course was written in about 1993-94) so its information is very out of date. Since that time technology has introduced the BMD bone density scan, and the pharmaceutical industry has developed and promoted the use of bisphosphonates such as Fosamax and Evista. These two developments alone have rendered this book totally out of date and therefore not useful, in my opinion. Also, the information is not evidence-based, most of his recommendations are based on anecdotal and observed results, rather than on scientific studies. What he has to say is interesting, sometimes even fascinating, but is it accurate? For example, his recommendations on caffeine are based on the result of an "experiment" of giving three cups of coffee to five women. I don't consider that evidence-based medical protocol.
A vastly better source of information is The Myth of Osteoporosis, by Gillian Sanson, published in 2003. Her book is exhaustively researched, she cites medical and research studies involving hundreds and thousands of subjects, she covers the newest technologies and medications. The only thing missing from her book (because it was published a few years ago) is the very latest information about the potential dangers of Fosamax and the class-action lawsuits about the death of bone in the jaw that has caused people to have their jaws removed. She provides excellent suggestions for improving bone health, including exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and other ways to beat osteoporosis. She doesn't say that osteoporosis is a myth, she just debunks some of the myths surrounding this condition. I highly recommend this book over the Gaby book.
A treasure.......2005-09-04
This book is excellent and has surpassed my expectations of information, not only on osteoporosis, but many other aspects of health care. In fact, I am so pleased with it that I have bought a total of 4 copies, 3 being for my children. Two of them are in health care, and the third will also benefit immensely from the knowledge this book provides. Thank you, Dr. Gaby, for writing this book and sharing your knowledge and research with those of us with osteoporosis, and those who can head off its devastating effects.
old copyright but good basics.......2005-09-03
This was copyrighted in the early 1990s and there has been a lot of new information about bone density/HRT since that time. It does have thorough, clearly written information about a nutritional approach to preserving bone density.

The Most Used Cookbook in my Library.......2004-12-05
My first edition was given to me as a gift from a former employer in 1986. I considered this woman to be an accomplished cook, and she told me I would find this book invaluable. She was right. When I want to make something special, impressive and totally dependable, this is where I turn. Everything I have ever made from a recipe in Tea Time at the Masters has received rave reviews.
My favorite cookbook.......1999-01-14
I have owned this cookbook since 1980 and I have yet to find another cookbook that compares! Whether you are having a social gathering or a family meal you will not be disappointed in the recipes. I own Round 2 and it does not compare to the original. I just ordered a new one after all of these years. The lasagne and carrot cake recipes are worth the price of the book. It's a must for every Augusta host or hostess, especially during the Masters. Enjoy!
Great, simple recipes!.......1998-12-31
My mom has been using this book for years and the goodness in this book still amazes me to this day. I no longer live in Augusta but when the time comes to visit home I can always look forward the the foods that are represented here in this historical publishing. Great "yummy" chocolate cake!!!!The icing is even better!!! Jody Logan /Peachtree City,Ga.

Alsheimer shows what deer hunting is made of with this book. You'll get top-of-the-line information on planting food plots, managing trees, keeping records on your deer, hunting deer for your setup--everything!! He not only tells you how to manage your property and deer, but also explains how deer live throughout the entire year.
Charlie Alshiemer is a photographer by trade, which is very obvious in this book. His photos of whitetails are nothing short of amazing.
His style is very matter-of-fact and easy to understand, making it that much more enjoyable to read.
This is by far the most informative book I have ever read. Buy it today; you will get your money's worth. I wish there were more books like this one on the market!! I'll give it as many stars as are available!!
Great Book.......2005-09-22
I couldn't put the book down. I grew up in Steuben County in the town of Caton. Iam going to start implementing some of the things I learned in this book this year. I would tell anyone interested in learning how to grow bigger deer (buck or doe) should read this book.
Alsheimer Does it Again.......2003-06-12
Charlie Alsheimer is possibly the best white-tailed deer writer of all time. He is certainly the best deer photographer. His new book Quality Deer Managment the Basics and Beyond, is a prime example of both his talent as a writer and his brilliance as a photographer. I believe it to be his best book ever.
The book is written in Charlie's classic down home, easy to read style with easy to grasp explinations of complicated deer managment issues. He covers virtually every aspect of the QDM scene with common sense and uncommon insight. His treatment of the topic is inspirational and leaves you wanting to get out there and start practicing QDM now!
The photos chosen to illustrate the text are nothing short of spectacular. They bring the entire text to life in brilliant color and give you an up close and personal view of whitetails as only Alsheimer can.
After reading this book I picked up a copy of "Grow 'em Right" the new "how to" habitat and food plot book by Dougherty & Dougherty and am now ready to conquer the world of Quality deer managment. Now white-tailed deer book library is complete without this book

Blenheim And the Churchill Family: A Personal Portrait
ASIN: 0856674389 |
Book Description
During his lifetime, Sir Robert Walpole (1675 - 1745), first Prime Minister of England, amassed a magnificent collection of paintings and sculptures at Houghton Hall, the house he built in Norfolk. This book recreates the Houghton of Walpole's day, with many of its original paintings, drawings, and objets d'art, arranged room-by-room as Walpole and his friends and advisors, notably the great designer William Kent, would have shown them.
The innovative grandeur of the building and the splendour of its contents combined to make Houghton one of the premier houses of England, and thus it has remained. But a large part of Walpole's collection of paintings was sold for just £40,000 by his grandson George, Earl of Orford, to Catherine the Great, enlightened and acquisitive Empress of Russia's Golden Age. The majority remain in Russia, and only family portraits, furniture and sculpture are still to be seen at Houghton.
Essays by experts including John Harris and John Cornforth discuss the building and furnishing of Houghton, the Prime Minister as collector, the sale to Catherine the Great, and its legacy. This lavish book is the first to do justice to the rich and complex heritage of Houghton, one of England's greatest treasures.

Customer Reviews:
A great resource for beginners.......2007-06-24
Until recently my houseplant experience was limited to two spider plants and a ficus, both of which I managed to kill in about a year. I actually credit the plants for holding on so long, since they got horrible light, no fertilizer, and a little water every other month.
I recently decided to give it another go, but I was fairly nervous because I didn't know anything about how to take care of houseplants in general, let alone the special requirements of the commonly available varieties. I checked out several books before settling on this one, which is a good compromise between encyclopedic coverage of different plants and practical advice about plant care. Each of the 160+ plants in the book has at least one page of information and at least one full-color photo (sometimes more). The entry for each plant gives some basic information, specific requirements and things to watch out for, and a short troubleshooting FAQ. The book is divided into three parts, on flowering houseplants, non-flowering houseplants, and houseplant care. The final section on houseplant care goes into a lot more depth on just about every topic under the sun, including soil, light, water, fertilizer, seasons, training, propagation, leaching, repotting (and potting up, and top-dressing), and has a lot of helpful illustrations to get you through. At the end of the book there is a big list of resources, including plant clubs and sources for more in-depth information.
Right now I have 17 houseplants, all chosen without benefit of this book, just because they looked nice. But they're all in here. The book is NOT comprehensive, though--160 species is a lot but it is hardly exhaustive, and your local garden center or home supply warehouse probably has plants that aren't covered here. Still, almost all the common species and varieties are in here, and it is very nice to have instructions and tips that are specific to each plant. If you have some plants that aren't in here, you might want to pair this with a more taxonomically comprehensive book, such as The House Plant Expert or one of the houseplant encyclopedias.
I should add that the book is very well written, interesting, engaging, and accessible. I find myself picking it up to look up one thing and an hour later I'm still reading.
Oh, and all my new plants are doing great. Mostly thanks to this book.
Perfect for environment and care demands........2007-01-07
So many houseplant guides glut the market that it may initially seem difficult to see the need for yet another - but here's something different, offering color photos, a plant ID guide to help those who receive 'mystery houseplants' as gifts, details on low-maintenance plants, and an A-Z of care basics for quick and easy access. Brighter and more detailed than most, THE COMPLETE HOUSEPLANT SURVIVAL GUIDE helps buyers choose the plant which is perfect for environment and care demands.

The Complete Houseplant Survival manual: Essential Gardening Know -How for keeping (Not Killing) More than 160 Indoor Plants`.......2006-12-08
Excellent resource manual. Specific details on the care of individual plants as well as sections pest management with recipes for non-toxic sprays for pests, potting, watering, etc. One probably does not need another resource for houseplants.
Excellent House Plant Reference.......2006-12-03
Very intelligent and user-friendly layout, from the botanical pronunciation, vivid photos, color-coded divisions and species charts, to the concise, easy care instructions for a wide variety of houseplants. Very useful to novice gardeners as well as experienced horticulturists. One of the best and clearest houseplant guides currently available.
Bought because of a review, and I'm glad I did.......2006-03-24
I purchased this book after seeing it reviewed positively in another publication, and I'm glad I did. It offers simple, straight-forward, and clear information on caring for numerous plants found in houses. The pictures are also great, making it easy for you to recognize those plants you just can't name.

A great book for those appreciating exceptional woodblocks. A good information source.
Only negative is I'm really am not keen on soft covers.
For those that appreciate bijinga (and this publication prints quite a few of those) and a better hardback quality/indepth publication may I recommend The Female Image.
Review of Japanese prints of noted collector.......2004-11-29
Displayed in a large-size, high-quality trade paper volume are over 100 prints from the collection of the noted collector Robert O. Muller (d. 2003) which have been bequeathed to the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. Besides the artist, name, and date for each print, there are informative annotations on the career of the artist and the subject and style of the print. Most of the prints are in the 20th-century Japanese style of "shin-hanga binga," whose artists were "struggling to acknowledge tradition and at the same time transcend it." Introductory essays cover Muller as an influential collector and place the prints in the context of Japanese artistic traditions. The varied aspects of the text, including a "Glossary," provide a historical overview of Japanese prints as well as a representative catalog of prints from the Muller collection of more than four thousand.

Majority was on Fox and Parrish prints only........2003-02-05
I was mislead by the title, I thought I was getting hundreds of
artist and examples of their prints, but the book is on Parrish and Fox with a couple of other artist thrown in. Not at all what I was
looking for.
Excellent Book an American Prints.......1999-08-07
This book covers 6 american artists from the turn of the century and includes important facts for each. It covers prices, condition, histories of the artists and much, much more. I like the way the book is laid out, it is easy to follow and understand. I judge collecting type books on how much I can learn and retain and I have learned a lot from this one. I highly recommend this one.

Nearly a century has passed since the newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer endowed the journalism prize that bears his name, observing, "Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together. An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to known the right and the courage to do it, can preserve the public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery." Over that period, The New York Times and its writers have taken more Pulitzer prizes than any other newspaper, and the sampling of their work that Anthony Lewis offers in this collection ably shows why this should be so.
Taking in book reviews, commentaries on art and architecture, editorials, news pieces, and work that falls into the comparatively new genre of "news analysis," that sampling is more than a celebration of a single newspaper, influential though it may be; it is also a record of historical events as they have unfolded. An entry by Harrison Salisbury, for example, documents the Soviet Gulag system, "so routine, ordinary, and common ... that local residents seem not to have the slightest embarrassment about such phenomena." Another, by Sydney Schanberg, renders a surreal slice-of-life portrait of a Cambodian town undergoing round-the-clock shelling. Still another, by Nicholas Kristof, relates the tragedy of Tiananmen Square as "bullets swooshed overhead or glanced off buildings." Closer to home, the anthology also includes pieces on race relations in America, now-forgotten crimes, and the Reagan-era initiative to build the "Star Wars" antimissile system.
For readers with an interest in world history, contemporary affairs, and good writing alike, Lewis's anthology offers many rewards. --Gregory McNamee

Reflections of the Twentieth Century.......2002-02-13
In his 1904, Joseph Pulitzer left $2 million to Columbia University to establish a journalism school.
Believing an "able, disinterested, public spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and the courage to do it, can preserve the public virtue without which the popular government is a sham and a mockery," he reserved 25 per cent of the amount for prizes to reward excellence in the field.
During the twentieth century's remaining years The New York Times won 81 of those prizes. In his introductory essay and story forwards, the editor, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony Lewis relates the stories behind the stories and documents journalism's evolving role in society. For the reader, a vivid, moving portrait of the century emerges, as told by a group of talented, dedicated observers.
Included in a section entitled "What the Government Didn't Want You to Know," David Halberstam's December, 1963 think piece on the Vietcong growing strength. Published 15 months before President Lyndon Johnson committed hundreds of thousands of U.S troops to assume the brunt of the fighting from the South Vietnamese.
In 1967, J. Anthony Lukas exposed a growing gap between children and their parents in "The Two Worlds of Linda Fitzpatrick," a well-to-do Connecticut girl who was found murdered in Greenwich Village with a hippie friend. The story, which contrasted her privileged up-bringing with her squalid, drug-ridden lifestyle, caused numerous families to reconsider this wide spread and dangerous split.
Dave Anderson won the prize 1980 for his column on George Steinbrenner's ceremonious - complete with finger food for the assembled press -- firing of Yankee manager Dick Howser.
It is tough to ignore the prizes for commentary won by Anna Quindlen on AIDS and Russell Baker's two prizes for being serious and his reflections on working with Norman Rockwell.
Journalism maybe rift with faults, but the stories contained in this volume demonstrate what results when gifted, hardworking journalists follow their noble ambitions and dreams.

Book Description
India is one of the oldest civilizations known to history. Its origins reach back to the third millennium B.C.E. or earlier, to the time of ancient Mesopotamia, Sumeria, and Egypt; but whereas the cultures of Mesopotamia, Sumer, and ancient Egypt are only fascinating historical memories, the civilization of India has survived down through the centuries, maintaining a remarkable and resilient cultural continuity that endures as a major presence in our modern world. This unique catalog presents for the first time the popular art of India, specifically, the chromolithographs or printed color posters or calendars (often simply called "god posters") to be found in tea stalls, tailor shops, and grocery stores of everyday life in modern India. These god posters have been passed over, largely unnoticed or dismissed with contempt by most interpreters of modern Indian culture. They not only provide a window into the rich and colorful images that adorn life "on the ground" in India and the manner in which gods and goddesses, child gods and god-men and their traditional mythical narratives come to be portrayed and transformed in the mass consumer culture of India, but also represent a major vehicle for sustaining the cultural continuity that makes India so distinct. Coauthored by Pratapaditya Pal and H. Daniel Smith.

Book Description
Every page is memorable, every image unforgettable, every moment meaningful. Take a tour of the entire twentieth century through the more than 500 of the most outstanding magazine covers from around the world--Look, Life, Der Spiegel, and Paris Match among them. Each one stands witness to an era when magazines kept headlines to a minimum, allowing the pictures to speak for themselves. From political figures to fashion to movie stars, from depictions of daily life, 100 years of imaginative and thought-provoking design unfolds. Such titles as Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue set the styles with the greatest artists; Andy Warhol's Interview later showcased cutting-edge art direction and images from photographers, such as Francesco Scavullo. Here, too, are refined, witty, and often satiric drawings from The New Yorker and Norman Rockwell's nostalgic paintings from The Saturday Evening Post. See how journals throughout the world portrayed a monster (Adolf Hitler), key heads of state (Khruschev, De Gaulle, Kennedy), two world wars, the Beatles and Vietnam, and royal weddings (Princess Grace, Princess Di). From Punch and Playboy to Time and Jours de France, it's an amazing, sometimes joyful and sometimes sober, look at life in the last century.

Newsstand favorites.......2003-11-16
I have read reviews of this book in the media suggesting it is a history of the twentieth century through magazine covers. I don't see it like that, rather a visual history in two chapters, of twenty-eight leading consumer magazines from Europe and the USA. The first chapter covers the twenty-eight titles with a good choice of covers and text explaining the history of each one. Playboy and Esquire mix it with Fortune (eleven super designed covers) Stern and Punch for instance.
The second chapter called Trends is the one that I think readers will find the most interesting. It looks at styles and techniques of cover design and finally at people on the front page. Some of these covers could be considered historical as they feature politicians like Churchill, Stalin, Hitler and Charles De Gaulle, or celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe (shown on a spread with forty-eight) or Sophia Loren.
Magazine folk will enjoy this well designed book because of all the covers. I can recommend another book, 'Cover Story' (ISBN 0811808165) which has two hundred American titles from 1900 to 1950 in a beautifully designed paperback. Perhaps the definitive book on the subject is the sumptuous 'Great Magazine Covers of the World' by Patricia Frantz Kery, out of print but worth looking for because it has five hundred covers from twenty countries, in a word, stunning.

A Man Ahead of His Time.......2001-04-27
I know the author of this book, and that is what first interested me in reading it. But I quickly learned there was more to George White than the novelty of being the only African American in Congress (1897-1901). He was a talented, accomplished man--ahead of his time in choosing to combine successful public and private careers with an unusual attention to the less fortunate of his own race. He faced a momentous decision at the turn of the century: accept the new segregation oin the United States, and the disfranchisement that came with it, or condemn both and fight them. he chose the latter, and effectively ended his own political career. But he remains a fascinating man, and one well worth reading about. I recommend you read this book!
Little-Known Renaissance Man From NC.......2001-02-27
George Henry White represented North Carolina in Congress from 1897 until 1901. When he left, he became the last man of his race to be elected to Congress during the post-Reconstruction era, leaving a void which would not be filled for nearly 30 years (North Carolina didn't elect another African-American to Congress until 1992). White became, sadly, an historical footnote.
Benjamin Justesen has performed an intense labor of love in resurrecting White's story. Armed with prodigious amounts of careful research - reflected in the copious footnotes sprinkled throughout the text - and his own personal determination to bring this biography to public attention, Justesen has realized his dream of writing George Henry White's life story after becoming acquainted with his subject while working as a reporter in the 1970s.
He brings to life the issues and prejudices of the period, which only serve to magnify the high principles to which White held himself. Believing that education and one's own hard work got one where one wanted to go, White proved his beliefs in a time when Southern public sentiment was gradually moving into its shameful Jim Crow era.
A lawyer, politician, banker, real estate developer, family man and man of faith, George Henry White is a model for anyone today - black or white - who thinks, "I cannot." His life is an example to us all, and his biography a fascinating look at both a man and an era in Southern history.
The man of the hour at the turn of the century.......2001-01-21
At the outset: I'm the author, and of course, I'm partial to my own book. But I'm also immersed in the subject, having spent the last four years of my life bringing George White's story to readers. George White was a fascinating man, but one about whom little is known today: the first African American to serve in Congress in the 20th century (retiring in 1901) and the last of 22 to serve from the South after the Civil War until the 1970s. He was a stalwart Republican, and served alone in the Congress for four years. But he was more than a token--an accomplished teacher, lawyer, prosecutor, developer and banker. He deserves to be studied in depth; my attempt is the baseline, a painstakingly drawn outline, based on a careful study of limited evidence. Judge for yourself--and then place him in his rightful position in our history, as the intriguing, honest, flawed but eminently admirable individual he was. I recommend him--and this book--highly!
