Book Description
Claire Malloy runs a bookstore in the normally quiet college town of Farberville, Arkansas-an enterprise which provides the verging-on-meager living for her and her deeply sarcastic teenage daughter Caron. So when emergency work forces Claire and Caron to abandon their apartment for a few weeks, they are in no financial position to put themselves up in style and Claire is thrilled to accept a customer's offer to let them stay at her well-stocked, well-equipped palatial home while she is traveling.Of course, nothing is ever that easy. No sooner do Claire and Caron ensconce themselves than disquieting events start to occur-dubious people show up looking for the 'traveling' owner of the house; the owner herself turns out not to be who she claimed and is now seemingly on the run; and a dead body keeps turning up-and subsequently disappearing-around the grounds of the house. Determined, for once, to stay out of the mysterious doings, Claire's hand is finally forced when the disappearing body turns out to be only the first corpse to turn up...

Now You See It, Now You Don't.......2005-09-02
Claire Malloy, owner of The Book Depot, in Farberville Arkansas is having a bad day. There are rats in her kitchen and she is going to have to move out while the problem and other emergency work is taken care of. This could take weeks.
Fortunately, Dolly, one of her customer's at the store is going away for a few weeks and wants Claire to housesit for her.
So she moves into the palatial estate with her daughter Caron and Caron's best friend Inez. What could be more perfect?
Not this. No sooner does she move in than Caron and Inez claim to have found a dead body in the back yard. The body has disappeared by the time the police show up and Claire tries to convince herself that the girls really hadn't seen anything.
Then things start to get strange. Madison and Sara Louise, claiming to be nieces of Dolly show up and claim their car had broken down while coming down to see Dolly and they needed a place to stay.
Other strange people seem to be lurking around the area and when Claire see's a dead body in the yard, which also disappears before the police can show up makes her worried about everyone's safety, which proves true, when the much seen dead body shows up in the freezer in the garage.
Who is the man? What was he doing there. Where is Dolly, who has disappeared and appears not to be who she says she is. What is going on, why are the FBI investigating and are they in danger?
Claire decides to investigate with the help of Lt. Peter Rosen, "her boyfriend" the web of secrets, lies and more murders as she wonders if maybe they shouldn't have stayed at the "Dew Drop Inn."
Highlights:
Claire Malloy, she is a very adult acting character. Serious-minded, but you almost have to be if you're a widow raising a teenager alone and trying to get along on an iffy business like a book store.
Peter Rosen, who is a great boyfriend and friend. He doesn't like her investigating, but helps all he can because he knows he won't be able to stop her.
Caron and her best friend Inez. Typical middle of the group teenagers, they're not in the "A" group of teenagers, although they want to be, but they're not in the "Z" group either. They are actually the funniest characters in these books.
A complex mystery. A lot of twists and turns. A very quick read.
The sci-fi fan pot-head, who spends most of his time trying to shop lift from her store. He's been in since the first of this series and add just a touch of humor whenever he appears.
Lowlights:
For the first time, Claire does some really dumb things. When you're house sitting, you don't let two total strangers move in without asking the home owner. And when they're obnoxious, and insulting to your daughter and her friend, treating them like maids and making it miserable for them to live in the house you throw them out. I didn't understand Claire's insisting that they stay, except as a plot maneuver to move the story along.
Except for Peter & Inez there aren't a lot of reoccurring characters that appear in this book. Claire needs a wider circle of friends.
Minor problems, but still a very good read.
I think this series has one of the longest time between books, the last book "Out On A Limb" came out in 2002 and it was a little difficult to get back into the characters.
Check out Joan Hess's, Maggody series, with Arly Hanks. I don't enjoy it as much as the Claire Malloy series, but it's also a good series.
Not as good as I had hoped..........2005-08-20
I expected more out of this book, I have enjoyed the series in the past, although the daughter Caron is irritating! I really thought the story dragged quite a bit in this book, and must agree with others that our main character did some really dumb things.
A page turner.......2005-08-09
Joan Hess has done it again. The latest Claire Malloy mystery is a hoot and hard to put down. I have read all of the books in the series and am waiting patiently for the next book. If you're an avid fan like myself, don't miss out on this new installment in the long-running series.
A fun read.......2005-08-08
NOTE: Do not listen to any negative review posted here. I've enjoyed most of the Claire Malloy mysteries thus far, and THE GOODBYE BODY doesn't dissapoint. The story is chock-full of surprises, twists and turns, and plenty of laugh out loud moments.
I like cuddling up with a new Claire Malloy mystery whenever possible, and this is one of Hess's best mysteries, and one of Malloy's most bizarre adventures.
If you've enjoyed other Claire Malloy mysteries, don't pass up this interesting romp. I'm looking forward to Hess's next book in the series.

Golden Goodbye.......2005-07-08
Joan Hess does not disappoint in this latest Farberville installment. I've never read a book by Hess that didn't make me laugh out loud!
Claire Malloy, daughter Caron, and Caron's friend Inez are house sitting for a mild mannered, souffle-making, tango-dancing Book Depot customer. But things at Dolly Goforth's palatial home are not what they seem, i.e. the dead body that keeps popping up in the oddest places. Dolly has warned Claire about the multitude of cleaners/maintenance people coming by, but never mentioned disappearing cadavers, visiting relatives, or her past connections to some unsavory factions of society. The doorbell, true to form, rings and rings. Half the fun of this book is seeing who's on the other side of the door.
With a wacky style that's like nothing else out there, The Goodbye Body held my interest from start to finish. A trip to Farberville is pure escape!
Book Description
The final volume of this epic fantasy pits good against evil when the worshippers of the God of Light battle the servants of Eternal Night for the future of Thrull.
Customer Reviews:
Delightfully ghoulish.......2001-09-09
Mr. Johnson really knows how to tell a ghoulish, yet engaging tale. A fascinating trilogy, one should start with book one "The forging of the shadows", then "The nations of the night" before tackling this one. Otherwise it leaves gaps in the flow of the story, although the author does "update" one within the first few chapters. I felt enormous empathy toward the badly burned, utterly isolated priest of Reh (their sun god of Light). The priest, Urthred, is forced to wear a mask and special gloves to cover his burned face and hands and is the wonderful hero of this saga. His devastating experience with such immense pain has created within him a wellspring of compassion and strength that are remarkable in contrast to Thalassa, the self absorbed heroine whom prophecy has foretold would be the Lightbringer. Her task is, through some great act, to reanimate the dying sun caused by the evil forces in their world. Personally I prefer strong women and for me Thalassa, so full of doubt and self pity was the one weak link in an otherwise strong cast of characters.
The only other problem I had with these otherwise excellent books is Mr. Johnson's use of words that force a reader to grab the dictionary. However, I very much liked the mix of primitive culture contrasted to the sci fi notion of the "gods" coming from the stars in their "metal dragons" (a metaphor for space ships). The war of good vs evil/light vs darkness is enhanced by the author's facility in not hammering religion down one's throat on the assumption that everyone in the (readers') world is a christian or whatever. There is a subtle injunction for the reader to look at self accountability vs being an unwilling participant tossed about by the everchanging whims of the gods.
The story illustrated the power of the individual's "ego" (free will) to make choices based upon the drives of his/her "id" (the subconscious mind or baser levels of humanity) and make them real for better or for worse. For example: as the archetypal bad guy, Faran Gaton Nekron if filled with rampaging jealousy, resentment, hatred and warped lusts. He manifests his vindictive revenge and sick needs into hideous annhilation of everyone whom he cannot conquer. He claims that he is doing the Worm God Iss' will, but in fact it is Faran's own dark and destructive desires disguised as "religion". This conflict creates an astonishing amount of tension which is so vital to the tenor of excellence in a horror story.
This saga shows the shadow or nihlistic part of human nature (jealousy, greed, hate, revenge, etc.) as contrasted to the higher nature of mankind's drive toward the light and love that creates and sustains all life. There are many layers to Mr. Johnson's genius and this trilogy, albeit more than gruesome at times, that indeed stimulates deeper levels of thought, plus rereading in the future.
The Last Star at Dawn.......2000-10-10
Unbilivebly horrible conclusion to a grea trilogy! The begining starts a bit strangely but it starts to get good. In the middle of this book i thought that it was going to turn out just as well as the others. But soon to my astonishment it started to get worse and worse and worse and worse and so on and so forth. It looks like it will be a good ending when one of the main cherecters dies, the Baron dies, all of the worm suddenly die and Lord Faran dies in a way that he could have gotten out of after living through so many unescapeable traps. Not only that but Urthred is blinde and Oliver Johnson loeses his touch for great description and good writing!
READ THIS BOOK AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Breathtaking!.......2000-04-02
This book blew me out of the water. It is a great adventure that everyone (excluding little kids) should read.
Fantasy for grown-ups.......2000-03-03
A thrilling conclusion to a great fantasy trilogy. There are action set-pieces in these books that stand up as among the best in fantasy literature. Oliver Johnson is not afraid to take some real narrative risks, and they certainly pay off! For example, the action of the first book takes place over a single night. The second book refuses to pander to the cliffhanger ending of the first, but instead re-introduces its heroes in an unexpected and intriguing way. And the third book is told from a perspective of many years afterwards - I can't say more without giving the game away, but these are characters you really care about and the conclusion of their adventures will have you on the edge of your seat right up to the last page.
Disapointing.......2000-02-18
Well the 2 first books of the series were really good with good plot, powerful vilains and some real good ideas that were quite original for a fantasy book, I really enjoyed the first and second book.
But this conclusion is really not as good as it could have been ! first of all there are major mistakes in the chronology. For example at the begining of the book, it is explicitly written that it is a year since Faran last met with the heroes, he was even obliged to drink from 11 of his reapers of sorrow (1 each month) to survive, BUT some pages later this year transforms in a month ! And I could point to about a dozen more errors like this one. How can someone make such idiotic mistakes, not even a beginner I believe.
Also the death of the vilains are pitiful, Golon passes for the dumbest sorcerer in the entire universe and Faran the luckiest Vampire ever. And then Jayal and the Doppleganger count for nothing their combat is not even described ! They could have been removed from this series without anybody missing them !
The story ends ok, if you enjoed the first books perhaps this details won't affect you for my part I won't pick up another of Oliver Johnson book until he has learn some basics about writing such as being careful of what you said 2 pages ago....

TOTAL CORE.......2007-09-05
This was a very good book. Easy to follow and the examples and explanations of the exercises are great. If you are looking to improve your core strength I would certainly recommend getting this book to help you. Good luck!
Poorly Organized, not very helpful.......2007-08-03
I had high hopes for this book. The book has good pictures, which illustrate the exercises well. However, it is very unorganized, with chapters that don't go in any particular order. Additionally, the routines that are recommended are very poorly worded, and don't give specifics about time to hold a position, or how many reps/sets to do. All in all, I was very disappointed with this book. To add insult to injury, the binding fell apart, and the pages are now everywhere.
New Routines.......2007-04-09
If you are tired of your old routines, learn some new ones. This book makes a great addition to any workout library.
Awesome Workouts.......2007-03-11
If you workout and want new exercises and routines you got to have this book. Its an awesome addition to any workout library. Easy to use. Very well written.
not so great.......2007-01-21
I found that this book was very hard to follow. The exercises are good to incorporate into other workouts but this book overall is not worth the money.

One of my favorite cookbooks.......2007-10-09
This has become one of my favorite cookbooks. It is perfect for extra special dishes for parties, or for two. The dishes are not difficult to prepare, have delicious flavors, quick to prepare, and are all shown in wonderful photos beautifully presented.
This cookbook has classy recipes with a modern flair and gourmet flavors but didn't use exotic hard to find ingredients. I regularly cook the miso marinated black cod, and also love the satay. I think this cookbook would suit home cooks that like pan asian gourmet food, without hours of preparation, although the dishes all come out deceptively looking like you have spent much time making them...highly recommended!
Sorry, it's a beautiful presentation, but..........2006-09-30
I agree the book is visually well presented and appealing, but the content is not suitable for home cooks, nor aspiring chefs. I admit I am 'flexible' in the use of 'fusion' cooking and terms, but I had definite ideas in mind when I read "Asian TAPAS". The (Spanish) tapas I know and love are not so labor intensive, nor contain such large shopping lists of ingredients. Elegant food? Absolutely. Flavorful and interesting food? Without a doubt. "Tapas", as I know them? Absolutely not - the French influence of intense preparation and manipulation (not a bad thing, don't misunderstand me), is inappropriate here - frustratingly intense efforts for 'tapas'. Also, where in the U.S. does a typical home cook/aspiring chef find, or more importantly, Afford, abalone?? It's my understanding that the finest North American source of abalone was California, and, greedy folks as they are, they overfished their abalone to extinction. Do you have the staff required to do all the mise en place and prep work for these works of art? Some cookbooks are more the display of the talents of the author chefs, rather than a source of encouragement and teaching to home chefs. This is the second time I have bought a cookbook without visual inspection - I will not do it again.
A beautiful recipe book that blurs cultural lines .......2005-03-09
Co-written by an executive chef, Asian Tapas: Small Bites, Big Flavors is a beautiful recipe book that blurs cultural lines in its presentation of exciting flavors from Bali, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, China, and more. From Flaky Cashew Nut Puff Pastry Squares, to Summer Green Tea Noodles with Mussels, to Spicy Crab Salad Sandwiches and more, the preparations within combine traditional ingredients to create inventive and mouth-watering, succulent dishes. Each recipe is accompanied by a full-page color photograph that captures the dish with the precision of a skilled artist. A beautiful, captivating compendium recommended for kitchen cooks of all skill and experience levels who want to try preparing something a little different.

... and 1 Slow, Agonizing Way to Kill Your Cat........2007-02-20
As a career microbiologist with a fair grounding in biochemistry, I might be qualified to say a few words about the feline vegetarianism advocated in this book.
While I'm certainly no apologist for the mass-market pet food industry, I can't let the author's advice on feline nutritional needs go unchallenged.
Basically, Cats ARE obligate carnivores. Why? Unlike humans, cats cannot synthesize the organic compound taurine, which is essential for their survival. THE TAURINE CONTENT OF GRAINS, VEGETABLES AND FRUITS IS NEGLIGIBLE; IN MOST CASES SO LOW AS TO BE UNDETECTABLE. Cats CAN live on a modified (VERY carefully modified) diet consisting mostly of well-balanced vegetable protein PROVIDED they are given some form of supplementation for the nutrients that cats normally obtain from eating meat. Synthetic taurine is available, although I was under the impression (perhaps erroneous) that "synthetic chemicals" were anathema to most serious vegetarians. "Natural" taurine is easy to come by, with the caveat that there's only ONE "natural" source of taurine: meat. Perhaps my logic is flawed, but I don't see much of an ethical distinction between feeding your cat meat as opposed to a meat derivative.
If you know of someone who claims to have a cat who has thrived on a vegetarian diet for years without some form of taurine supplementation, they're either lying about the supplements or about the cat's health. A person who tries to "convert" their cat to vegetarianism without a thorough knowledge of the modifications that need to be made in order to make up for the essential missing nutrients in the cat's diet is condemning their pet to a life of sickness, blindness and eventually, premature death.
If there should be any remaining doubt on the matter, just type the words "taurine cats vegetarian" (without the quotation marks) into your browser's search field, and see what comes up.
This one issue doesn't necessarily invalidate the contents of the entire book, but it does raise serious questions about the judgment and expertise of a person who cavalierly advocates something as potentially dangerous as feline vegetarianism.
Cat cr@p.......2006-11-07
Cats cannot CANNOT be trained to be vegetarians, Unitarians or librarians. They eat meat. They need MORE protein and fat in their diet than dogs. Cats fed on carbohydrates develop a disease like cirrhosis of the liver. It's cruelty to animals to feed a cat on anything less than a the diet such as they require. They are carnivores, the way God made them. Ignore the advice in this book, please and feed your cat a healthy diet recommended by your vet.
PETA.......2006-01-05
Ingrid Newkirk (the author) is the President of PETA and a militant-type activist. No wonder she thinks cats can be vegetarian!! Love and respect animals and pets, and be informed- but please, don't be a freak.
There are many other books available by people who are still sane and care about animal welfare.
Pretty much worthless..........2005-01-21
If you own cats, and are interested enough in cats to actually buy and read this book, the only things that will strike you as new ideas are Newkirk's dogmatic beliefs about the welfare of our feline friends.
As a long-time vegetarian, bordering vegan, I have little problem with the suggestion that cats can be mostly vegetarian. However, a strict vegetarian diet isn't best for *most* cats, and can cause - in some cats, particularly males - struvite crystals in the bladder which are excreted, painfully, in their urine. This is because a plant diet does not have the acidity that a meat diet has - not because of a deficiency in protein, fat, or nutrients - as some reviewers suggest. Specially formulated, highly acidic brewer's yeast can help in this area, but a fail-safe method is to incorporate small amounts of meat, and do a heck of a lot of research. For example, our cats are pesco-vegetarians, and thrive on a diet of Evolution dry kibble - with small amounts of salmon or tuna every few days.
My biggest problem with Newkirk's take on cats is that they should be kept 100% indoors, and the assertion that death (is that the 250th thing you can do to make your cat adore you?) is a preferable alternative to allowing a cat to roam outdoors. I imagine Newkirk doesn't have children, and this is a lucky thing, because she would likely lock them in a padded cell for fear that they might stub their toe. Or maybe she'd just kindly euthanize them? Eeks. Not all cats are happy being indoor cats, and one has to decide if the possibility of death, perhaps in painful circumstances, is worth the risk when this is the cat's inclination and the only way some cats are truly happy.
Of course this doctrine comes from an animal rights group that has been noted for euthanising 85% of the animals it takes in - a far greater number than many public animal shelters (San Francisco Chronicle, June 23, 2005). And that, honestly, is my biggest gripe with this book, and with PETA in general. Hypocrisy of this sort - PETA is riddled with it - leaves me feeling we have the wrong group representing the rights of companion and farm animals, and that ultimately Newkirk's poorly researched, dogmatic ideas leave us all (animals rights activists) looking like a bunch of nuts.
Cat Care.......2003-09-27
Good info if you want to get some extra tips on cat care, and while some of the suggestions are expensive some are really cheap and handy. I'd lend it to anyone who wants to get some more basic in on cats but I wouldnt reccomend that they buy it themselves, there are other books out that that don't have the vegetarian diet chapter, which is pretty useless if you think that your cat should eat meat instead of some vegetable thing.
