5 out of 5 stars excellent regency mystery............2007-08-19

I've read 3 different genres by this author and they have all been worthwhile reads. Jennifer Ashley's (her other pen name) regency mystery proved to be no exception.

As someone who reads a lot of traditional regency romances and is a period film buff, I was interested in this book about an injured Peninsular Captain and the missing person mystery he unwittingly stumbles into upon coming upon a riot on Hanover street.

What I most enjoyed about this story was the interplay between the various classes-the captain himself-a titled son but impoverished, his newfound ally Grenville, titled, wealthy, but bored with society, and the other characters that range from respectable, to working class and even a few underworld types thrown in.

The mystery itself was well done,in fact several crimes must be solved, and are written cleverly enough that you will find yourself unable to discover who the culprit is till the Captain solves the crimes himself.

I really enjoyed the way the story is written that Captain Lacey decides to look into these crimes because it's the right thing to do and not because it was an occupation or debt to a friend.

Captain Lacey is written as a true brooding Regency hero-very forthright but not judgmental to those who must make their money in slightly shady ways (like a friendly young prostitute who supplies him with info). I found that highly credible from a character who'd witnessed the horrors of war. The flashbacks to things Lacey saw in those wars were well written and very evocative.

All in all, a good start to a Historical mystery series and I look forward to reading the next book.

5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A top-of-the line historical mystery.......2006-08-16

Ashley Gardner has a unique approach to the early nineteenth century British mystery. As a genre, many writers tell the story with the crime and the mystery as the central theme. Characterizations and historical data ensue.

Gardner tells his story with the injured Captain Gabriel Lacey as the central theme using a convoluted crime of kidnapping and child molestation as the conduit. Historically, 1810 London is accurate and informative for the reader wanting to learn more of that period.

Even more unusual is the introduction of the culprit(s) early on and the "dancing" with them done by the story's hero. But true to his purpose, Gardner brings home the finality of choices always done with honor and integrity by Captain Lacey. Not only is he smart and resourceful, he is every inch the honorable soldier of his prior warrior days.

I recommend this book to everyone who loves mystery - outstanding writing and to be entertained for the duration of the book. Always wanting to learn more, this reader did just that by reading this book.

2 out of 5 stars No Regency there.......2006-08-11

Its a mystery. Indeed. But as for the flavor of the regency, there is none. You could do this in any era. And then our hero... He is so conflicted and problem riddled, sympathy is certainly the reader will not give him.

Stephanie Barron and her Jane Austen mysteries give much more regency flavor. And the heroine certainly is not conflicted beyond ones belief that they will ever want to rise from bed...

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I found this author........2006-04-13

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would gladly do so. I thoroughly enjoyed my entire time of reading this book. Thankfully I started it when I could devote all my attention to it because that is what I ended up doing. Luckily I didn't have to feel guilty about ignoring those things I really should have been doing.

The historical time frame was superbly rendered. The character descriptions were so real that I feel I came to know the people and like or dislike them just as the author wished me to. The main character, Captain Gabriel Lacy, had just enough angst to make me sympathetic but not so much as to make me tired of hearing about his past. There was some mystery about an occurance in his past which was kept covered just long enough, with little bits and pieces revealed along the way to keep me curious. The conclusion was completely logical and satisfactory.

All in all, to my way of thinking, a superb way to spend my valuable time.

4 out of 5 stars Great Start.......2005-11-24

I just finished reading Ashley Gardner's first book in the Regency mystery series and really enjoyed it. It's a quick read, which is just what I needed after finishing the long, complex novel I had read just before!

But Gardner isn't just about escapist reading- she had a good plot, full of twists and turns involving not only the creme de la creme of society, but also those at the very bottom (who rarely turn up in Regency novels). She also gives her protagonist a GREAT mysterious history, hinting at all sorts of things about his past and his personality that, I hope, will come out as the series progresses. In that way, I am sure she has a loyal base of fans who will stay with her, just to learn more about the enigmatic Captain around whom the stories centers. All of his friends (and enemies) are also just as enticing- I'll be sure to pick up the rest of Gardner's books to read, too.

I like to change up my reading with one long book, and then one short book that serves as a refresher or brain candy. In my opinion, Gardner's series will be very much the brain candy sort- fun and easy to read, and perfect to reinvigorate me!

The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches IV
ISBN: 15754550658
Magical ---- Literally!

I became intrigued by the phenomena of Ruin Mist awhile back, and this review is a long time readers perspective. In many respects, I'm probably the last person who would enjoy this book. I'm a cynic by nature, and my reading habits lean more toward more mature series and more literary works. Or at least I should say it used to before I discovered this wonderful series and learned how fun fun reads like this one could be.

As someone who grew up reading C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, I had a soft spot for a good fantasy tale when I was younger, and tended to read fantasy from time to time. This series however, has made a new fantasy lover out of me. Why?

Robert Stanek has created a delightful world of magic and mystery, with a compelling cast of characters you'll come to love (or hate) almost instantly. He captures the imagination with spare prose that draws his readers in. The concept of a elves and such isn't exactly new, but the ideas of parallel worlds of magic, alternating histories, elves and men as enemies, magic as evil, and more were breathes of fresh air.

There are times early in the series when it is obvious that this is the author's first major work of fiction. His other previous work (as an international bestselling nonfiction author) however, helps him writes tight prose, a balanced amount of detail with a story well-paced and well-plotted.

Overall, this is a very impressive series. Each character in the story as unique and real as their intertwining storylines. Plus, I like to think that some of the wonder and enjoyment I felt reading the pages of the early books came from the sense that the author was also experiencing this world and its characters for the first time while writing them.

The world of Ruin Mist has multiple levels of reality called UnderEarth, MiddleEarth, and OverEarth. UnderEarth is a place without sun, moon or stars. It has bloodred skies and is a dark place where many strange creatures dwell. MiddleEarth is the place of the kingdoms and reaches. It is where men and elves live. OverEarth is place of the skies. It exists above the clouds of the kingdoms and reaches.

The three main storylines provide glimpses into different parts of the world. Vilmos Tabborrath is an unassuming village boy who doesn't want to follow his father's path. He has a dark gift of magic and as magic is considered evil this puts him and his family in grave danger. He tries to hide his gift but one day it slips out when he is surprised by a bear and this is the beginning of the end of his life as a simple village boy.

Vilmos is intriguing becuase he is different from his peer group and mistreated by those around him. He recounts a story of getting beat up by an older boy and the harsh treatment by his father. Children often feel isolated and mistreated, as do adults, therefore most people can relate to this situation.

Adrina Alder is the youngest child of a king. She remains heartbroken over the death of her mother some years ago and longs for change. Her wish for change comes with dark visitors in the night but is not in any way what she hoped it would be.

Adrina is intriguing because she is someon just about anyone can identify with. She feels sad and alone in the world. She's bitter about not being able to do what she wants and longs for adventure. Children often feel sad and lonely, as do adults, therefore most people can relate to this situation too.

Brother Seth of the Red is an elven warrior and sworn queen's protector. He is old in human terms yet at the same time childlike in his ways as he is young for an elf. He doesn't understand what is happening or why he was chosen by Queen Elf to undertake a dangerous journey. His journey takes him to the land of men at a time when men and elves are the bitterest of enemies.

Seth is intruiging because he is so powerful yet so flawed. He is a trained fighting machine. It is all he's known and it is why he knows so little of anything else. He also has the urges of adolescence and finds his first love though he doesn't understand his feelings as he's been isolated from ordinary elves and the lives they live.

Other aspects of the writing itself are:
* The books are unique and readable.
* He takes time to set up the characters, plot, and scenes. He takes care in introducing Vilmos, Seth, and Adrina because of their hardships we know why they act the way they do when they leave their homes.
* He does not talk down to his audience of young adults.
* The same story elements that appeal to a child, appeal to an adult.
* His characters grow, change, and make decisions based on their own motives.
* Life is not simple. People get sick, people die.
* Good and evil exist, as they do in reality, and they have many guises.
* It is easy to read. The text flows naturally, even with strange words and unusual names.
* His creativity and descriptions bring life to the story. He creates mystery and keeps you wanting to know more.

For me, the real test of a book's strength is whether or not I want to read it again. Most books get read once and traded in. I've already read this series three times and have upgraded to the special editions as they've been published. And the best part is that the series gets progressively better with each new volume. As good as book 1 is, book 2 is even better, so if book 3, and book 4 is a real treat.

Younger readers certainly don't need me to point out something they already know, but hopefully this review will help persuade some like me who still cling to the notion that a children's book can't possibly be enjoyable to us adults. Stanek created a marvelous story that has captured readers from all age groups. His writing has been compared to JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and CS Lewis. He deserves all the success he's achieved. I can't wait to see what he writes next.

I loved this book!! I could really imagine what was going on! It was full of adventure and magic!

This would rank up there as one of the best books I have read. I would say that Stanek ranks up there with some of the best authors including: Jk Rowling, Jrr Tolkien, RA Salvatore, and Brian Jacques just to name a few of my favorites.

If you like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, you will LOVE this book! A 5 star winner!

4 out of 5 stars The 10 Minute Energy Solution.......2007-01-04

The individuals that received this as a gift from me are hooked on Jon! He is a "real" person when he talks and when he writes. Helps you believe in yourself and helps keep a person focused during challenges.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-08-24

I stumbled across Jon Gordon in a book entitled "The Experts Guide to..." while I waited in a store while my girlfiend shopped. In there he gave a brief outline on having more energy, so I figured I would inquire and learn more. Since this book rec'd 5 stars from several reviews, I figured it was a good place to start and it is. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is stuff we all know, and he manages to make it very accessible, making you realize you can achieve it.

The main thing I took from this book is "Do it!" Reading this book in and of itself, obviously, will not give you more energy, but he makes it so practical that if you APPLY the book you will have much more energy.

I found Chapter 2: Seven Essential Energy Boosters the most helpful. You know them, but you probably ignore them. His section on food is very helpful and worth the cost of the book. I started eating his "Bowl of Energy" every morning. With this recipe you realize how easy it is to eat a healthy, energizing breakfast.

The bulk of the book is the 30 Day Plan. He walks you through 10 minutes a day for 30 days, showing how easy it is to accomplish if you just take 10 minutes.

Are you sluggish? Are you depressed? It may be due to ignoring the 7 essential energy boosters. Purchase and apply this book and I gaurentee it will give you more energy and you will feel better.

i really like this book. i was introduced to persian cooking by iranian friends and have been cooking it for more than ten years. persian cooking is incredibly delicious, with inspired parings of ingredients.

the history in this book is fascinating, and, since i do a lot of indian cooking, too, the links of persian cuisine to indian are especially interesting to me. the author's style is delightful--i don't have many cookbooks that make me laugh out loud! the only reason i give this book four stars instead of five is that the recipes, while very good, really can't compare to the recipes in the persian cookbook, _food of life_. however, since _food of life_ is very expensive, anyone wanting to begin to explore the delicious world of persian cooking can do so enjoyably and successfully with this book, which is far better than any of the other persian cookbooks i have with the above exception.

There is a chapter on common parasites and a range of different treatment methods for both bacterial and parasitic infections, which foods might induce feeding in a new specimen (and which to avoid), size and housing ratios, different methods of filtration, descriptions of many different fishes that can and can't be kept with sharks/rays, a chapter on captive reproduction for many different species and how to care for the newborns, if necessary- how to force feed, materials suitable for custom tanks, plus so much information (ph, specific gravity, copper sensitivity, feeding habits, acclimation to aquarium, degree of rarity in trade- from exceedingly common to rarely seen, ease of captive care, suitable size tank ex.110 gal or whatever number in liters [from metric to imperial applies to dimensions also], to each species distinctive features) about the individual sharks and rays themselves. Plus so much more. A definite 5!

        5 out of 5 stars Oh Darn!.......2006-03-10

This is a great comprehensive view of aquarium sharks and rays. Unfortunately this book points out the truth, sharks are big! Even for a professional marine aquarist such as my self, you'll learn that the husbandry requirements for these animals is often obsured. This is a great book for professionals and those involved in public aquariums. With an overview on breeding, feeding, and health, this book is an excellent introduction to sharks and rays.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Great...So Far.......1998-10-29

I have read a pre-release version of this book and it is great. Anyone intersted in the aquaria of sharks or rays really needs to get a copy of this book! It is the 1st book ever to deal with the selection and maintaining of sharks and rays in home aquarium. Not only that but the book is very well priced.

The director of the Lucasfilm Archives says that before Return of the Jedi, it just never occurred to anyone to formally store and catalog the accumulated "stuff" associated with the Star Wars films. Stormtrooper helmets and lightsabers were crammed next to models of tauntauns and sandcrawlers in closets and cubbyholes. Only when George Lucas was surrounded by all this junk for a Jedi publicity shot did the Lucasfilm folks realize what an amazing collection they had.

That collection only grew when Lucas scored with the popular Indiana Jones trilogy, which added all manner of whips, swords, and idols to the archive. This photo-packed book chronologically surveys the collection's highlights: props, models, storyboards, backdrops, and sketches, spanning all six films. Fans of either (or both) series will be gratified by a glimpse at these oh-so-cool artifacts. Unfortunately, the text isn't quite as edifying as the pictures. Behind-the-scenes insights, such as the fact that Imperial Walkers were a late substitution for Norwegian army tanks and that Indy's shooting of the swordmaster in the market was a fatigue-induced ad lib, often take a back seat to unnecessary plot recaps and equally superfluous explanations (for example, that the Force is sort of like chi). Of course, the artifacts from the archive are the real attraction, and they don't disappoint. --Paul Hughes

4 out of 5 stars Good Films, Good Book.......2005-06-17

I love archival books like the "From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives" and this is one of my favourites, it's got tons of images from all the Star Wars and Indy movies. The text is somewhat unsubstantial, however the layout and design make up for any flaws. All this and quality you can expect from the best "Making Of" guy in the buisness, Mark Cotta Vaz. This makes for perfect coffee table reading for any film buff and a great price too. A great addition to any film fan's bookshelf.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Collection........2002-04-29

This book offers an inside look at the huge collection of the Lucasfilm Archives. Conceptual art, models, props, puppets, masks, and various other movie making elements from the original STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES trilogies are examined and the last few pages look at three or four items from other Lucasfilm projects including WILLOW and HOWARD THE DUCK. The text is more than just element descriptions and some of the information is interesting and rather fascinating. A great book for any STAR WARS and/or INDIANA JONES fan and a must for a Lucas buff.

5 out of 5 stars Why George Lucas will always eclipse the Star Trek Franchise.......2001-11-29

This book is proof positive why George Lucas and Speilberg will always be superior to the Star Trek Franchise with their brand of movies. The pictures in this one are a must have for any fan of Star Wars or Indiana Jones. The complete story boards. Not just crude renderings. The masks, the designs that didn't make it into the movie. The characters in all their films are not by formula. All the Star Wars aliens and models from Return of the Jedi are in this volume. You can see how closely the story boards match what would eventually would become the movie.

        3 out of 5 stars Great pictures.......2001-07-26

Fun book to peruse. I'd have liked more details about construction of props or pics of props being built. Also, more "Star Wars" than "Raiders" despite the title.

5 out of 5 stars Why Didn't Someone Think of This Before!.......2000-12-07

Last year a good friend loaned me this book, with the comment, "You're gonna love this..." I picked it up on a bus ride and started to read. That night, I finally put the book down after finishing the entire thing. This book is phenomenal. I have always loved Star Wars, and the chance to look at many of the models, etc. was a treat. The prototype monsters, characters, etc. were also a plus, but my favorite section was that dealing with the models of the Imperial ships. The Indiana Jones section was also incredible, and this was another favorite of mine. Although there has been a lot of hype around Star Wars stuff, and many books have been published around the making of the movie, Indiana Jones has had less coverage, so this book was a great resource. Just goes to show what can happen if you dig around in there for a few hours!

The Journal of Leroy Jeremiah Jones, a Fugitive Slave is about a 12-year-old slave boy who lives on a cotton plantation in Alabama in 1855 with his Mammy, sister Beulah, rascally twin brothers Buster and Bizzle, and Baby Ernestine. Leroy's job is to take care of the evil plantation owner's stepson, Eddy, who becomes his best friend and "conspirator in crime." Leroy and Eddy find plenty of mischief to get into until the day they learn "Pappy Snake" and "Mis Evil Eye", Eddy's stepfather and mother, plan to give Leroy's twin brothers away to relatives in the Carolinas. That's when the two boys launch a plan to hide Leroy's family in a secret cave they discovered the day Eddy skipped school. Leroy meticulously records his escapades with Eddy and the close calls his family has. This book includes photos and nonfiction information that will interest teachers, librarians, and parents and is recommended for children age ten and above.

4 out of 5 stars Review of The Journal of Leroy Jeremiah Jones.......2004-03-04

The Journal of Leroy Jeremiah Jones, a Fugitive Slave by K.J. McWilliams, is a fun, read-aloud book for children. Set in the Appalachian region of Alabama, young Jeremiah Jones, 'knowd here 'bout's 's THE ROCK,' is taught an early lesson about leadership when his pappy dies. Struggling to keep his family together while working for an oppressive master, Leroy befriends the master's young boy, who is his age. Like many youngsters would do in the same setting, they frolic and get into mischief on the rice plantation. When rumors begin to surface about changes on the plantation that threaten to split up his family forever, Leroy springs to action with a plan to escape. In the book are photos and etchings of slave life from the era, that give the reader a strong, historical context for the story. McWilliams sprinkles nuggets of humor throughout the story, making make it a delight to read for adults and children alike!

5 out of 5 stars A childs view of slavery.......2002-08-03

If you want to understand how it felt to be a slave child, read this book. With the dialogue and circumstances you feel as though you were there. It is great to read aloud. My mentee's teacher has used it to inspire her pupils to write their own diary. Besides that there is much historical information about life during that time. The pictures that accompany the text help you picture the times and places. Buy it for young children and others too. I wonder how the author is able to do this. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars The Journal of Leroy Jeremiah Jones, a Fugitive Slave.......2001-10-27

I am an elementary teacher/school librarian/book reviewer and author of PIRATES (Franklin Watts)as well as several magazine articles. I wrote THE JOURNAL OF LEROY JEREMIAH JONES after having spent years studying slavery and reading slave narratives! This middle-grade novel is about Leroy, a 12-year-old slave boy living on an Alabama cotton plantation in 1855, who hides his family in a nearby Appalachian cave. Leroy and his friend, Eddy, the wicked plantation owner's stepson, become best friends and have many daring and humorous adventures before the boys decide to help his family escape to FREEDOM. Leroy's family consists of Mammy, Bothersome Beulah, the twins, Buster & Bizzle, and Baby Ernestine. In the cave they are joined by their friends, Mule Man Max and Gal Nancy. In The Author's Note I have provided factual information and photos that will help teachers introduce this important time in American history to their classes. Children of all ages, teachers, and parents will love the adventure and humor in LEROY. I tried to show this horrible time in our history without graphic horror--so children would keep on reading and learning and enjoying! LEROY ends on an upbeat note as his family finds a happier life in Ohio. K.J. McWilliams (Naples, Fl)
