Amazingly good first novel.......2006-01-21
Big fans of the Bookman novels, my husband and I were wary of this much earlier work; sure are glad we gave it a try! Dunning evidently cannot write a bad book -- the plot here was fun and different, and as usual with Dunning, the characters are very well drawn. We were riveted, and didn't begin to guess the outcome until very near the end. Well worth reading.
A fun adventure...........2001-02-23
I read this book because I have become a John Dunning fan. It was obviously written by a not-yet-seasoned writer, but was still a good story. In some places it was more than obvious, in others- totally out-of-the-blue. (i.e It was no surprise that Vivian was the woman in the house on the hill, however it makes no sense that Gould will tell perfect strangers all about the "Caverna del Oro" if he was already enjoying the spoils.) I would still recommend the book, if for no other reason then to see how far Dunning has come in his ability to spin a page-turning tale :) You'll still find enjoyment even in this early attempt at suspense...
Even lesser Dunning is not bad.......2000-12-05
My fellow reviewers on this page are obviously Dunning fans who are feeling disappointed. It's true that this is not up to the other two -- and later -- Dunning mysteries, but even early Dunning has qualities to recommend it. The author admits the "rawness" of his work in the highly informative forward. But he has nothing for which to apologize. He has delivered a well-plotted thriller that could use a little more in the way of detailed characterization; everything else is a quibble.
A Good First Effort.......1999-07-04
This is Dunnings first effort in the mystery/thriller genre. While interesting at times, it is ultimately just O.K. The ending is a bit weak, and the beginning drags. But, once the hero arrives at the old mining town, it does become fun. If you need a quick read on a long flight or train ride, this is for you. Just don't expect much and you will not be dissapointed.
for true John Dunning fans only.......1999-03-23
If you are such a John Dunning fan that you want to see his early efforts, read this book as research. This book is really not very good. Booked to Die and Bookman's Wake are terrific. As for the Holland Suggestions, well, everyone has to start somewhere. And I'm sure its a better book than I could ever write...

Puts you in the cockpit.......2007-01-16
Wonderful adventure about Britain's small military airships of World War I. Prolific Fullerton is reknown for his accurate technical detail, and he gives you enough here to put you uncomfortably in the open-air cockpit of a hydrogen-filled blimp hunting submarines at 6,000 feet over the English channel and on into occupied France for a little espionage. Brave men, flying with no parachutes (few available yet) in what amounted to a biplane's fuselage, stripped of its wings, suspended beneath the highly-inflamable (even explosive) gas bag by a series of occasionally unreliable wires. With the primitive forecasting of the day, the weather could be their worst enemy. These machines exist only in photos today, and not many of those. But quite a lot of historical material is on the Web about the little and big airships, which were improved from about 1913 until the 1930s when airplanes had advanced enough to make the blimps fairly impractical, due to their dangerous hydrogen gas. Think of the Hindenberg disaster, and others less well known.

Book Description
The collection of ten absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.
Customer Reviews:
A Masterfully told account of the tension between therapist and patient.......2007-08-31
In the tales that Dr. Yalom relates in this book, he shares the accounts of his patients' problems, however, and more profoundly he shares a great deal of himself and how he responds to these problems. The image that emerges is that of a therapist who is not always right, nor always agreeable, but always human. His defects are made endearing by the fact that he is aware of them and struggles with them. He is a first rate storyteller and the glimpse he allows us into the therapeutic relation is quite worthwhile.
Yalom tackles the inescapable issues of being human.......2007-08-10
A friend gave me this book a few days ago. My friend is very well-educated, has lived all over the world, and has experienced more than most people. When he gave me the book, he said to me, "This book reflects my vision of the world".
How could I help but be intrigued?
Opening the book, he then read the following passage from the Preface: "Four givens are particularly relevant for psycho-therapy: the inevitability of death for each of us and for those we love; the freedom to make our lives as we will; our ultimate aloneness; and, finally, the absence of any obvious meaning or sense to life."
When I recently read the novel LIFE AND FATE, which takes its characters through the massive Battle of Stalingrad and Stalin's Great Terror, I couldn't help thinking how poor in material for great novels is the typical life of a prosperous, well-educated professional living today in the OECD. Compared to the intensity of the experiences described in LIFE AND FATE, even wonderful writers like Ian McEwan are boring.
But, as the Preface accurately foreshadows, there is nothing boring about LOVE'S EXECUTIONER, because my friend is right-- the four issues described in the Preface do indeed define the human condition.
In a sense, LOVE'S EXECUTIONER offers, in the broadest possible sense, the ancient wisdom found in Psalms 90: "Teach us to number our days: that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Dr. Yalom is quite frank about what he considers the "magical" thinking and "delusion" involved in religious belief, however. Aside from his commitment to unflinchingly acknowledge the truths he describes in his Preface (and therefore, "Teach us to number our days"), Dr. Yalom's faith resides in the healing potential of the relationship between the therapist and the patient. This could be generalised to incorporate the Second Commandment to "Love thy neighbour as thyself" with its emphasis on human relationships and mutual openness, but one senses that Dr. Yalom would acknowledge this point, at best, with a sardonic shrug--"Whatever gets you through the night."
Yalom is his own main character, and LOVE'S EXECUTIONER is a dramatic account of how the "character" Dr. Yalom undergoes dramatic encounters with deeply troubled characters not unlike the way the "character" Dante encounters vividly depicted souls in Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.
Like Dante's DIVINE COMEDY, LOVE'S EXECUTIONER is episodic. The ten tales all vary and will affect individual reader's differently. For some reason, I found the case of the morbidly obsese woman deeply moving, while being most unsettled by the cases of the elderly neurobiologist and the elderly accountant--perhaps because they were the patients most similar to me.
thers will relate to other patients, but what Yalom consistently does in each of these stories is to bring out the fascinating richness and complexity of human beings, the many layers and conflicting motivations and emotions, and by doing so he fully justifies the intense struggles and engagement of "Dr. Yalom", the character, in his efforts to diagnose and heal his patients, all of whom, whether likable or not, seem intensely alive in the pages of LOVE'S EXECUTIONER.
This not to say that Yalom is a genius of the order of Dante, of course, but these tales have an intensity that can be compared to the effect of great literature. Dr. Yalom derives his authority, not from artistic genius (although he is a skillful and sophisticated writer) but from the fact that he is intimately familiar with terrain that frightens and intimidates most of us: severe psychological distress, grief, suicidal feelings, depression, unresolvable anxiety. Like Dr. Szczeklik, the author of CATHARSIS, Dr. Yalom maintains his poise under circumstances in which most of us would be acutely uncomfortable, and probably ineffectual. The fact that these two doctors can calmly navigate the ground of life and death, of insanity and inner darkness, sets them apart and makes their books compelling.
fascinating.......2007-05-22
I am generally not a fan of modern psychological methods and their inability to face the spectre of death and the fundamental decay of our 'modern' civilisation (primitive cultures were much more sensible in their organization in comparison with the capitalist terror we have created).. This is precisely why dr. yalom's book appeals to me.. It is a certain breed of existensial psychology that looks at death head on.. but credit must also be given to yalom's obvious personal report with his patients and his understanding of humanity (something experience seems to play a key role in)..
I have never been so struck by the personal accounts of the theraputic process in the very moving stories yalom has compiled here.. I found myself completely absorbed from the first pages on.. I feel that i have greatly benefited from reading this book.
Tales of a Psychologist.......2007-05-07
Irving Yalom is very frank and very blunt about countertrasference situations with his patients. Very interesting vignettes that I highly recommend for students, professionals, and faculty alike.
Thank You Dr. Yalom.......2007-04-29
An incredible book. Dr. Yalom restored my faith in therapists and human beings. I have read the book twice and given to many friends as gift. The most healing aspect of the book is one's realization that EVERY individual is flawed, conflicted, volunerable ... and the journey of self-discovery and acceptance is the only path to reaching inner-peace and content.

Love's Executioner is one of those rare books that suggests both the mystery and the poetry of the psychotherapeutic process. Erica Jong
These stories make us realize that within every human geing lie the pain and the beauty that make life worthwhile. Bernie S. Siegel
This is an impressive transformation of clinical experience into literature. Dr. Yalom's case histories are more gripping than 98 percent of the fiction published today, and he has gone to amazing lengths of honesty to depict himself as a realistic flesh-and-blood character: funny, flawed, perverse, and, above all, understanding. Phillip Lopate
These remarkably moving and instructive tales of the psychiatric encounter bring the reader into novel territories of the mind -- and the landscape is truly unforgettable. Maggie Scarf

Absolutely amazing.......2004-07-16
I LOVE this book! It's just so nice to be able to grab a cookbook when you're in a huge hurry for dinner to be ready fast, that provides you wonderful menus and easy directions for meals in no time flat. The food is wonderful and there are even recipes for making them a little less fattening. If you can't find it here on amazon, check ebay and oxmoorhouse.com. You can almost always find one on these two sites.
The Best.......2004-05-16
I absolutely love this book. The recipes are so simple and quick. I would love to give it as a gift but can no longer find it.
The only cookbook I use!!.......2004-03-28
This was a gift from my mother, and I have tried MANY of the recipes-- all of which have been easy & delicious. My sister is addicted to hers as well, and I plan to buy another copy as a wedding gift.
I love this book!.......2004-02-28
I have only had this book for a week and have already made 5 recipes from it! Very simple, quick recipes that taste great. I highly recommend it!
The title says it all...........2003-01-22
This cookbook is full of quick easy recipes for those who dont have alot of time during the week to cook elaborate meals. Although some of the recipes will make it seem to others as if you spent more time than you did. About 90% of the recipes have pictures associated with it so you can see what your end result should look like. A couple of my favorites in this book include, easy enchiladas, oriental burgers, and nacho chicken. And for those who like dessert, might I suggest, easy brickle cake.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive - read BEFORE buying your Iggy.......2007-08-26
First-rate coverage of the whys & wherefores of raising iguanas, especially the Green Iguana. It would be a good idea to read the first few chapters before buying to get a feel for the Iguana "lifestyle".
Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual.......2007-06-28
As the subtitle says, this is the "ultimate owner's manual." It is comprehensive book, with detailed and specific information, punctuated by anecdotes from iguana owners. Because the iguana is a difficult pet to maintain, with specific environmental and dietary requirements, this book is essential to the iguana owner.
A must have for all Iguana owners, or Wanna be's.......2007-03-23
This book has it all. Everything you need to know about your pet. The photos are beautiful, and the written word is concise and easily understood. The authors passion for Iguanas is obvious, and his knowledge on the subject vast. It may seem expensive and perhaps you wonder if you need so much information, but if you have an Iguana you owe it to yourself to understand this unusual reptiles behavior, habits and special needs. After reading this book, I became more aware of my Jacks special place on this planet.
Exhaustively researched and still a good read........2007-02-23
This book has helped me a great deal in giving both my pet iguanas excellent care. It covers all the ranges of care from designing or a habitat or what to look for in a preexisting one, as well as proper health care and nutrition. It even explains how to identify the country of orgin based on coloring and body type. It teaches responsibility and actually discourages getting an iguana if the would be owner thinks it is an easy to care for pet. All in all its one of the best pieces of nonfiction i have read and it full of easy to follow advice presented in a clear detailed manner.
Extremely informative and accurate.......2007-02-02
This book is the best Green iguana book I have ever read and has the best and most accurate information on large green iguanas. It is very difficult to take care of these little green guys and this book absolutely a life saver. If I only had the funds to purchase one book on iguanas, I would choose this one.

Customer Reviews:
A reliable consumer's guide.......2005-11-02
Ms. Ware is a highly knowledgeable, respected expert in the field. This is a solid reference that does not, as some reviewers suggest, encourage buyers to rely entirely on dealers' self-interested recommendations, nor does it purport to eliminate the need to check on market conditions before buying.
Just because the DEALER says it is all good? .......2005-04-09
Perhaps the best teaching about this book is the extent some of these people will go to sell you a rug. Consider the knowledge of a car salesman when you look at the long list of authorities who have shamelessly attached their name to this and think long and hard before you purchase. Much of what the car dealer tells you is valuable information but much of it is self serving as well. It would be wrong to say that this book is devoid of valuable information but it would also be erroneous to suggest that some humans are unlike the bottom feeders in the fish aquarium. I am not an expert but have read a few books. I hate to see people get burned and discouraged. Rugs are wonderful but the dealers are something less. Please don't let the fancy associations FOOL you.
Happy Hunting - just get out to as many shops as you can and feel the rugs and ask questions, but by all means don't trust everything the dealers suggest.
Not recommended for the beginner........2005-04-07
First let me say that as a rug dealer of many years and founder of the Boston Rug Society and having written numerous articles in such journals Hali and Antiquitaten Zeitung there is no way of easily pricing antique oriental rugs and in this way is quite misleading. If one wants to gain insight into the pricing of oriental rugs I recommend a subscription to Hali and Sotheby's catalogues. By all means do not use this book to price oriental rugs. The best way to begin this process if you do have an heirloom you are wondering about is to have a professional appraisal done (auction houses such as Sotheby's and Skinner's will do this free of charge). This book is skimpy in its information and the dealer recommendations at the end of the book reads more like a list of friends of the author than a list of reputable dealers. Some of these people I know and are reputable while other on the list I have found less so in my experience. More so than any other field I have encountered the field of oriental rugs and its dealers is full of alliances and petty feuds. Do not use this book to price oriental rugs or to pick a dealer. There is no one simple "open sesame" to the world of oriental rugs.

Book Description
The papers in this volume were originally read at the Sixth International Orion Symposium. The primary focus of the volume is on the wisdom texts from Qumran that have been fully edited only in recent years, especially 1Q/4QMysteries and 4QInstruction.
Prior to the discovery of the Scrolls, our knowledge of wisdom literature in the Second Temple period was limited to contemporary biblical books, apocryphal works, and pseudepigraphical writings. These recently published compositions now allow for a more nuanced picture of wisdom literature and its impact on and interaction with other genres. In addition to shedding light on the world of their authors, these texts illustrate how biblical wisdom was reused in new contexts, and provide a missing link between earlier and later sapiential compositions.

Book Description
Thousands of black cowpunchers drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail after the Civil War, but only Nat Love wrote about his experiences. Born to slaves in Davidson County, Tennessee, the newly freed Love struck out for Kansas after the war. He was fifteen and already endowed with a reckless and romantic readiness. In wide-open Dodge City he joined up with an outfit from the Texas Panhandle to begin a career riding the range and fighting Indians, outlaws, and the elements. Years later he would say, “I had an unusually adventurous life.”
That was rare understatement. More characteristic was Love’s claim: “I carry the marks of fourteen bullet wounds on different parts of my body, most any one of which would be sufficient to kill an ordinary man, but I am not even crippled.” In 1876 a virtuoso rodeo performance in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, won him the moniker of Deadwood Dick. He became known as DD all over the West, entering into dime novels as a mysteriously dark and heroic presence. This vivid autobiography includes encounters with Bat Masterson and Billy the Kid, a soon-after view of the Custer battlefield, and a successful courtship. Love left the range in 1890, the year of the official closing of the frontier. Then, as a Pullman train conductor he traveled his old trails, and those good times bring his story to a satisfying end.
Customer Reviews:
A worthy read........2007-08-10
The Life and Adventures of Nat Love is the narrative of a former slave who went west first to become a cowboy in Texas and across the plains during the American Reconstruction period and then to retire as a Pullman Porter in Oklahoma (I believe). It is a culturally significant work because there are obviously very few such stories and it highlights the fact so many cowboys in the latter part of the 19th century were, in fact, black. It would probably be inaccurate, however, to read Nat's narrative as the gospel truth. Rather, it reads more like a dime novel romp with a heavy dose of Horatio Alger and Booker T. Washington's 'Up from Slavery' philosophy. Which seems strangely fitting for a former slave during Reconstruction who believed himself undeniably American. Nat became a cowboy because he was a free spirit, despite slavery, and the order of the day for Americans was to 'go west.' Thus, like other Americans at the time, he has (at first, at least) no sympathy for marauding Indians (the best one being a dead one) and no cultural identification with non-Americans (i.e., Mexicans). Like other American cowboys (and dime novel heroes) he was a crack shot and superior horse-man, eventually earning the name of Deadwood Dick for these talents (notably on July 4). The narrative is definitely an intriguing read and anyone with an interest in slave or cowboy narratives, or dime store novels, should be interested in looking deeper into this one.
