Book Description
"Intricate and entertaining . . . A delicious puzzle." The Boston Globe
The murder is in America, but the call goes out to Scotland Yard superintendent Richard Jury. Accompanied by his aristocratic friend Melrose Plant and by Sergeant Wiggins, Jury arrives in Baltimore, Maryland, home of zealous Orioles fans, mouth-watering crabs, and Edgar Allan Poe. In his efforts to solve the case, Jury rubs elbows with a delicious and suspicious cast of characters, embarking on a trail that leads to a unique tavern called "The Horse You Came In On" . . .

Not the Best..........2007-08-23
As a devoted Martha Grimes fan, I can find something to like about every one of her books - with this one I relied on the tried and true characters of Jury, Plant, and Wiggins to pull me through the morass of plot twists, mediocre supporting characters, and the downright dismal portrayal of Baltimorians (can anyone possibly be that pathetic? I guess so.) One refreshing twist in this one - Richard Jury is nearly upbeat! It's often painful to follow him into the vat of depression that he absolutely must slog through in order to solve a case. Melrose is brilliant, as usual, and Wiggins is Wiggins. Gotta love him.
KEEP JURY IN ENGLAND.......2005-05-04
I COULD NOT FINISH THIS BOOK. I HAVE GREATLY ENJOYED THE OTHER INSPECTOR JURY MYSTERIES AND WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED.. MY THEORY IS THAT THE FAULT LAY IN TRYING TO SET AN ENGLISH MYSTERY IN THE US. THE INTERIORITY AND SENSE OF PLACE THAT SO CHARACTERIZES ENGLISH MYSTERY DOES NOT WORK IN A SETTING LIKE THE US. FROM THAT
STEM ALL THE OTHER DIFFICULTIES WITH THIS BOOK-- FLOUNDERING AND LOST - BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT AT "HOME". AGATHA CHRISTIE COULD PULL IT OFF BUT WHEN POIROT WAS IN EGYPT, FOR INSTANCE, HE WAS SURROUNDED BY ENGLISHMEN WHO HAD IN EFFECT "BROUGHT' THEIR PORTABLE WC'S ( LIKE THE ENGLISH DID IN AFRICA) ON THEIR "SAFARIS". (sorry about the capitals - just noticed it)
Embarrassingly insecure/arrogant. Self-indulgent.......2005-02-22
A riddle: What could be more pathetic than Grimes' character Alejandro Vlasic? Grimes pours out the scorn, portraying this ridiculous figure in his ostentatious dress and preening, and laughable jealousy of his commercially successful genre fiction colleague. He sniffs arrogantly at her merely populist work, embarrassingly thrusting copies of his own justifiably ignored tiny single volume of pretentious poetry at anyone passing - all the while eating his liver in envy. We're left in no doubt that, unlike his colleague, he's a complete loser.
More pathetic than petty little Professor Vlasic? Well, how about a commercially successful genre fiction writer going to the trouble of carefully creating such a character? Really for Grimes to spend so much time glorifying a character, ahem, much like herself, and pillorying those who, it seems, she fears criticism from, is at best embarrassing for the reader.
Maybe I've started at the wrong end of her career - an amazon reviewer elsewhere recommended her `Man with a load of Mischief', but I found this later `Horse' at my local library instead. It felt really indulgent - many of the characters are writers, and Grimes just seems unaware that it's bad form for her to so unsubtly laud ones like herself. Moreover it feels like Jury and Melrose are supposed to be old friends - perhaps back for a last time reunion and we're just supposed to relish their presence. I don't even know if I would have, however, even if I had enjoyed them in previous books. It feels like those awful 'On Tour' TV episodes - you know, the Happy Days cast goes to Australia or something.
The detective story, at least, is engaging enough while it's there, but it's hardly central and driving. This is usually for me an attraction of a crime novel: I particularly enjoy ones that have enough going in character, humour and observation that they don't stand or fall on the plot - much as we can enjoy some of the ride when it's driving things. However Grimes' diversions generally don't grab me - particularly (did you get this) when she seems to be blowing her own trumpet (cf. Asimov's appallingly arrogant drivel in the last of his Foundation novels).
One of the worst books I ever read.......2004-04-26
Like other reviewers, I read the reviews on the back of the book that said that this was a great book. They were so wrong. I made myself finish the book - assuming that there had to be some clever tie-up of all these stories. But there isn't one. The murders and the solution are merely minor storylines in this book. And all the rest is annoying characters and talk, talk, talk. There are about 3 chapters AFTER you find out who the murderer is (an obvious murderer) and they serve no purpose except for more talk, talk, talk. This was the first book I read by this author and I won't be rushing to read others.
Balti-moran Pride.......2004-03-15
Having spent the last six years working two blocks from Cider Alley and Poe's grave, I found this book a very enjoyable read. I can imagine for some folks that this degree of familiarity does not apply, but I can say I've had a beer at the Horse You Came in On, and various other familiar stops that Plant visits with Hughie the hack.
I do feel that this particular edition of Richard Jury is not as satisfying or complex as some of the other mysteries and that the local color somewhat distracted from the plot. But, having said that, it was a good three hour light read that I did enjoy. Other novels Grimes of course rate much more highly with me, such as the The Blue Last, and The Grave Maurice.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
The sequel is pretty much as good as the first. It contains a new point of view character, Zeb, who was Harris' mentor on old earth. There is a plot to kidnap Doc, and teams are dispersed on both worlds, in case he is at Harris' wedding. This is where Zeb becomes entangled in the mess, and goes back with them to the Fair World.
The story this time, continuing the theme that history is somewhat parallel, but the Fair World is only in the '30s, is one analogous to the 1936 Olympics. Zeb, while not quite Jesse Owens is, however, basically a 21st century ex-military unarmed combat master. A bit of an advantage.
He also discovers he has a thing for one of Doc's associates.
Harris and Gaby are by this time highly competent members of the Sidhe foundation, and Harris has taken on a leading role, replacing one of the fallen in the first book.
Entangled in all this, again, is Doc's family, the 'royalty' of a pommi-like place. Not too good, son a super villain, brother basically a nazi, mother rather duplicitous.
So, Olympic competition, a nazi style plot, and a bunch of Beagle boy type gangsters.
Another helping of pulp adventure and urban fantasy, and a fine one.
The Adventure Continues.......2003-01-30
This second installment is every bit as good as the first book. The story is starts off running and never slows down. Allston does an excellent job of conveying the characters emotions, and does it without interrupting the flow of the story. The story is clear and easy to follow despite the various subplots and numerous characters. I highly recommend the two books in this series, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that there is a third, and fourth, and...
A Great Sequel! But not quite perfect..........2001-07-06
Doc Sidhe and his associates are out to discover who is behind Doc's kidnapping and attempted murder. Zeb Watson, a fight manager from the grim world (our world) is introduced to the fair world (a 1930's fantasy world, more or less) by the protagonist from the first book, Harris Greene. The story progresses as Zeb discovers that both worlds have racism and bias, hatred and isolation, love and kindness. The fair world's history following the grim world's (in a loose way) has begun to develop a Nazi movement of their own, backed by the powers of a never-before-seen sun god.
Don't worry if you haven't read the first book, because this one stands alone quite well. No, wait. If you missed Doc Sidhe, run out and get it. You're really missing something! Having read Doc Sidhe, (and having been entranced by it) I couldn't wait for Sidhe Devil to hit the stands. The humor is still strong, and the characters are still enjoyable. The story MOVES like you won't believe, and visualization is easy enough through-out.
As I said, the story moves very well, the writing style is fluid and the interactions are very real. I can imagine people saying these things to each other, and getting angry, laughing, being touched, etc. But I found myself put upon to enjoy the climactic conflict between Good and Evil as much as I had hoped to. The bad guys in this story are strangely under-developed, and in fact remain unknown for most of the novel. Allston typically shows his antagonist's motives and thoughts in excellent interactions with their henchmen. With this element missing, the impact of the finale seemed diminished. Everything else is in place, though. Intelligence on the parts of all the characters, no "typical" mistakes, and just when you think you can predict the next chapter, you're off in a new direction.
All in all, a great book and really enjoyable. Once again, Aaron made me laugh out loud while reading. But just shy of Five stars. This time.
Great fun!.......2001-06-05
Once one gets past the terrible pun imbedded in the title, this book is a wonderful throwback to the justice-figure pulps of the 1930s. Doc Sidhe is the equivalent of Doc Savage in the "fair world," a parallel universe where science and magical "devisement" uneasily coexist. Here Doc and his assistants battle the fair world equivalent of Nazis, neutralize a superweapon that could be used to conquer the world, end a plan to breed a race of supermen, and defeat a new-born Sun God in single combat.
The novel manages to open with a completely gratuitious sex scene (!) and never lets up from then on. There's a battle every chapter or so, in true Lester Dent style. Also welcome is the appearance of a fair-world equivalent of The Shadow!
If I have any criticism of this, or the earlier novel in the series, DOC SIDHE, it's that not all of Doc's aides are up to snuff. A couple come pretty close to being liabilities, specifically the largely personality-less Gaby and Ixyail. To balance that weakness, though, we have the fair world equivalent of Carl Barks' Beagle Boys, namely the Bergmonk Boys.
You'll have fun.

Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook.......2007-01-09
Has info in it that the regular book doesn't have and I found it useful to understand more of what was in the regular book. I definitely would recommend finding a group to study this with for sure. The group brought it all together for me.
Empowering.......2006-02-22
Interesting methods for group cooperation. Anticipates common disharmonies and provides easy, compassionate strategies for keeping connection. Contains challenging exercises and, for those who prefer to practice alone, serves as an excellent solo NVC journey guide.
If you read the book, this workbook is just a review of it.......2005-02-26
I liked the NVC (Non Violent Communication) book, but the workbook fell short of expectations. It had a chapter by chapter homework assignment, and sometimes the questions were not necessary "NVC is also known by the title ___" (one answer is Giraffe Language). I expected the Workbook to offer guidelines on refining and practicing the technique, rather than simply reviewing the chapters of the book. I read the book, I understood it, I retained it. I didn't need the workbook. There are excellent components of the workbook also - some of the thought-provoking questions were helpful in deepening my understanding. I read the workbook and did the exercises, reviewing some in an NVC group. I feel disapointed because the book was more of a review than I expected it to be. I would like to see another workbook that has more exercises to develop greater skill in the NVC techniques.
Plunging into Nonviolent Communication practice.......2004-10-20
This is the best tool I have found to
start practicing Nonviolent Communication,
whether on your own or with a group.
I find the exercises proposed here to be
imaginative, clear, down to earth and comprehensive
of the basics of NVC.
I think this workbook enhances Marshall Rosenberg's
teachings and contributes to make them practical for
anyone.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST have cookbook for people who hate bland food.......2001-12-31
Of the fifty or so cookbooks on my shelf, this is the one I use the most and has the highest percentage of recipes you are likly to actually use. The best of these recipes are are truly incredible, but while some are better than others I've yet to try a recipe I thought was a dud. I won't bother to list my favorites here- you should buy this book and start experimenting yourself. (Well, okay, you HAVE to try the "Shashlik" recipe with lamb kebabs!) The only complaint I have about this book is that its index isn't very good, but after you use it for a while you will know where to find things without it.
In addition to the wonderful recipes, there are other features that make this a very useful cookbook. First, it has text about techniques regarding marinating and dry-rubbing that has a lot of good information for cooks, including a great table comparing the relative properties of various oils. Tarantino provides recommended uses for the marinades and dry rubs, and instead of saying "Try on fish, or beef or pork" and leaving it at that, his recommendations are far more precise: beef brisket, pork tenderloin, swordfish steaks, scallops, shrimp, rabbit, venison, and other delicacies make their way into the suggestions for use. While it's fun to flip through the pages looking at the various recipes, there is a handy table in the back which can help you to quickly match up what you plan to cook with an appropriate recipe.
A final word- most of the dishes I've cooked that my dinner guests raved about and requested the recipe came from this book. I'm tempted to try to keep it a secret, but it's too good not to share.
My All-Time Favorite Cookbook.......2001-08-10
I've owned this book for several years. I consistently go to this book for ideas. It contains recipes for spice blends, flavored oils and vinegars, dry rubs and marinades. Following each recipe is a helpful list of recommended uses. I've used this book scores of times and it hasn't failed me yet. Especially good are "lime salt", "honey ancho marinade", "vodka dill marinade" (great for fish!), and "Lebanese Chicken Kabobs". Give this book a try.
Best-ever book on marinades.......2001-01-12
I use this book a lot. I've never been disappointed with any of the marinade recipes. Every one I've tried works great. There's also a handy table in the back to help you locate marinades for pork, beef, chicken, or fish/shellfish. I've also enjoyed the pineapple salsa and corn salsa recipes with seafood.
An excellent book to broaden your grilling horizons.......2000-12-28
I was given this book as a companion to a new gas grill. The recipes are not overly complex to make, but complex in flavor. Most ingredients are readily available, and the book does not really lock itself into a "genre" --there are flavors from France, Vietnam, the SW-- everywhere. It's wonderful.
Opened up a whole new world for grilling food!.......1999-04-20
I love to barbecue but was stuck in a rut using 'traditional' tomato-based sauces. This book opened my eyes to dozens of alternatives. I started with the marinades but then got hooked on some of the more savory dry rubs. If you love to grill then this is a "must have" book!!

Rare indeed.......2007-06-18
Anatolian Shepherds are big and beautiful, an unusual breed rarely seen. I have been interested in having an Anatolian companion for several years and recommend this book highly as it gives a clear look at the dog's unique personality and the somewhat different training needed by the breed.
Anatolian Shepherd Dog.......2005-11-10
This is a very good book that relates the history and characteristics of this rare breed of dog. As the owner of an Anatolian Shepherd, I found the information herein to be helpful and accurate. This is a wonderful breed and the book is a great reference for owners and would-be owners.

Values are included in the captions.
Customer Reviews:
PM Collector.......2007-05-17
Post mortem collectibles are't for everyone, but for those who have an interest in this type of collection, this book is one of the best!
Waste of Money-Really Misleading Title.......2006-11-28
I was so excited to see that there existed a book on post mortem collectibles. As a collector of vintage photos-dags, ambrotypes, tintypes, CVD's, and Cabinet cards, with an emphasis on post mortem photos, I was hoping that this book would showcase at least some photos from the cased photo era. However, the book does not delve into this area at all. Not one cased post mortem photo is shown. Most of the post mortem photos are people lying in coffins from the 1940's to 1960's. Plus, there are lots of pics of death related stuff that isn't really "collectible"-like pictures of tombstones. Are we to think that tombstones are collected? I certainly hope not! I would recommending passing on this and waiting for another publisher to publish something better on the subject-something like Sleeping Beauty One, but that is in print, and not cost $500+.
Morbid But Curious!.......2004-12-28
Bought this for my father-in-law who's in the business. We loved the books, it was fasicnating. Many photos of photos, apparently there's a market for photos of funerals. I thought the book might have something on another collecting area, photos form the 19th century of deceased individuals propped up with relatives. This seemed to be popular at a time when many persons, especially children, died before ever having a photo of themselves taken, so families would prop them up as if they were alive. This gave the family a last memento. Anyhow, we enjoyed the book very much.
Title should be "Collecting Postmortem Photographs".......2003-01-27
I have been collecting postmortem objects for several years and was very excited to find this book in print. However, I was greatly disappointed to discover that, far from being a comprehensive identification and price guide, this book focuses almost exclusively on photographs - not the items in them. Picture after picture is generically described. Most of the photos are ascribed values in a generic range. None of the items pictured in the photos are identified or priced. Only five or six pages are devoted to collectible objects in the field. This book was misadvertised and, for me at least, a waste of money.
FASCINATING.......2002-01-16
This is the first comprehensive book on collecting funeral and death related items, and is not morbid at all. It covers most of the major types of collectible items and has beautiful post mortem portraits, which I collect and must admit are my favorite items in this book. The author has an extensive collection of these and I wish he would publish more of them.
There is a growing interest in this aspect of collecting, touching on a hidden and forbidden part of history and culture, history of photography, the art of stone carving and preservation of cemeteries.
The author presents all of this material respectfully and with a touching sentimentality. If you collect anything related to death, you need to have this book. It has many excellent and clear photos of the items described.
