Book Description
In her award-winning mysteries–from
The Last Kashmiri Rose to
The Damascened Blade–Barbara Cleverly paints a dazzling portrait of the British Raj, infusing it with intrigue, enchantment, and menace. And in her detective hero Joe Sandilands, war veteran and Scotland Yard policeman, Cleverly gives us a gallant guide to this paradise lost. Having seen humankind at its worst, now, in a lush royal kingdom, Sandilands will see it at its most dangerously complex....
In northern India, Ranipur is renowned for its trove of priceless gems, its exquisite palace, and its medieval mores in matters involving men and women. But Ranipur’s prince is dying, and Joe has been sent to be Her Majesty’s witness to a charged battle of succession. With two heirs dead and another running for his life, Joe suspects that a murderer is hiding among the palace’s visitors and residents, from English opportunists to scorned wives and a dangerous seductress. Now, as a gilded, remote bastion teeters on the brink of chaos and a man-eating tiger prowls the nearby countryside, Joe must turn hunter–of a human, an animal, and the hunger that drives them both....

Good Read but not as effective as her earlier books.......2007-07-05
This Joe Sandilands detective novel set in 1922 India is darker and less dramatic than the earlier books in this series, which began brilliantly with "The Last Kashmiri Rose". The setting and characters aren't as striking, being quite similar to the earlier ones, and I found it hard to care about any of them. Still a very good read and I look forward to trying the next one in this series, where Joe will return to England. I reommend readers definitely start with the earlier books.
A new discovery!.......2007-05-14
This is my first Joe Sandilands book, but it will not be my last. The characters are great and the history presented is fascinating.
fascinating historical mystery .......2006-09-08
In 1922 Scotland Yard detective Joe Sandilands is staying with Governor Sir George Jardine in Simla, India when the Maharajah of Ranipur asks for some help. Sir George asks Joe to help, which he agrees. He will accompany hunter Edgar Troop as they join a party tracking and killing a man-eating tiger preying on the villagers.
Sir George provides Joe with a rifle designed for hunting four legged animals and a Browning M pistol used to kill the deadliest species known two legged beasts. Upon arriving in Ranipur, Joe finds the Maharajah near death and his heir Bishan recently killed by a panther. When the next in line son dies in front of Joe, he obviously becomes suspicious of foul play but by whom. The only one to gain with these deaths is the youngest son, a preadolescent who is the favorite of the British Empire even as the cop wonders whether his country authorized murder.
THE PALACE TIGER is a fascinating historical mystery that brings to life 1920s India. The story line is fast paced, filled with action, and plenty of twists including a shocking finish. Joe is a terrific protagonist who feels like an outsider as he makes inquiries that are resented by the Maharaja's family especially his second wife and the local law enforcement. Readers will appreciate this powerful tale and seek out other Raj mysteries (see THE LAST KASHMIRI ROSE) by Barbara Cleverly (perfect name for this author).

An intriguing.......2006-08-02
"Heard someone say the other day, `Where Sandilands goes, trouble follows.' Come on, Joe, live up to your reputation --- enliven our dull lives,'" remarks a character in the opening pages of THE PALACE TIGER.
Scotland Yard detective and WWI hero Joe Sandilands already has experienced his share of excitement while on assignment in 1920s India. In his fourth outing, he is drawn into a world of royal intrigue. Joe's detecting and diplomatic skills are put to the test as he solves a series of murders while navigating the tenuous political line between the ruling British and the government of the princely state of Ranipur.
The maharaja, the ruler of Ranipur, is terminally ill, and the line of succession is in question after the death of his eldest son in an incident first believed an accident and then determined to be murder. Along with a colleague, the enigmatic Edgar Troop, Joe is sent to Ranipur under the pretense of taking part in a hunting party to track down a rogue tiger that has been attacking villagers.
Before Edgar and Joe arrive at the royal palace, another fatality occurs. This time it's the second of the maharaja's sons, whose demise also appears to be accidental until clues are uncovered that suggest otherwise. Unable to act in an official capacity because of political restrictions, Joe is tasked with discreetly investigating the murders and with protecting the maharaja's last living son, Bahadur, from harm.
No sooner does Joe arrive in Ranipur than he finds himself embroiled in the private lives of the palace's inhabitants, among them Madeleine, the widow of the slain second son; Stuart, Madeleine's brother and a former World War I fighter pilot; Claude Vyvyan, British Regent of Ranipur, and his secretive wife, Lois; Shubhada, the ruler's unconventional third wife; and Udai Singh, the reigning maharaja.
In THE PALACE TIGER, Barbara Cleverly unfolds a classic whodunit against an exotic backdrop. Her descriptions of the palace, from courtyards bursting with colorful blooms to winding marble corridors and gilded rooms to the customs and practices that take place within its walls, are intriguing enough. Add to that a clever mystery and a dashing detective, and it makes for an appealing read.
The character of Joe Sandilands is without a doubt the main draw. Just as the major players in this drama are compelled to confide in him, readers too will be drawn in by his intelligence, confidence, kindness, and quiet authority. But even Joe had better heed the advice given to him by his mentor, Sir George Jardine: "There are man-eaters in Ranipur, certainly ones with four legs but quite probably another prowling the corridors on two legs." As Joe discovers, Sir George is not far off the mark.

The Palace Tiger.......2006-07-26
I have never read the other books in this series, but I received a copy of this one. I was a little apprehensive that I wouldn't be able to follow the storyline, as I missed out on three previous books. However, I think it is very easy to get into the story and one need not read the previous books to understand the gist of what is happening.
That said, I don't think this book is nearly as great as the previous reviewer thinks. None of the characters really stand out in my mind, possibly because there were so many that one can't really get to "know" any of them except Joe Sandilands. The plot was fine, but seemed to get bogged down at the end by a great many twists and turns that would have been more believable had clues about them been introduced earlier in the story.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read- setting this series in the waning days of the British Raj is an excellent move on Cleverly's part, and the mystery kept my interest, even if I wasn't thoroughly compelled by it.
I would read Cleverly's other books in the series, but she is not one of those authors that immediately goes to the top of my to-be-read pile when a new offering is released. Rather, she's one that I would read if nothing else on my shelf really grabbed my fancy because she is a light, not-too-complicated writer.

AMAZING.......2002-10-22
Here it is Spidey fans, the best early matchups between the webslinger and my favorite villian, the Green Goblin. The comics reproduced here are Amazing Spider-man #s 17, 96-98, 121-122 and Spectacular Spider-man #200. Check out the appearance of the Human Torch in AS #17. Classic Spider-man that's not to be missed. If nothing else, it'll save you the trouble of pulling out your priceless copies of these masterpieces.
Great Green Goblin Collection.......2001-10-30
This tpb reprint all of issues in the Death of Gwen Stacy
storyline where the Green Goblin is kills Gwen, and where he dies, and you also get a few more issues with the Green Goblin. This book shows Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin too. If you like Spider-Man at all, you should get this book.
Green Goblin is the greatest!.......2000-05-02
This is a great book. The Green Goblin is one of the greatest villains ever created, one of my personal favorites. It's a good compilation of Spidey's encounters with the Goblin, showing some major points in Green Goblin's attacks on Spidey. It's a nice compilation book to look at and hold in your hands. I recommend it highly.
A good collection of Spidey's ultimate villian.......1998-04-11
Spider-Man has fought many villians, but none so evil as Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin. This collection contains Amazing Spider-Man #17; one of their early battles, Amazing Spider-Man #96-98; the famous drug addiction story, Amazing Spider-Man #121-122; the death of Norman and Spidey's first love, Gwen Stacey, and Spectacular Spider-Man #200; the death of Norman's son after he takes over the guise of the Green Goblin. The latter story remains one of the most powerful comics in comic history, and the book is worth buying just for that. But you also get 3 other great stories.

Notable and Convincing.......2007-07-23
Review: The Cholesterol Myths : Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease
Others have already submitted excellent reviews for The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, so I'll refrain from covering ground that they've already covered so well. In particular, please read the reviews submitted by Joel Kauffman and Stephen Byrnes; those reviews should give you a good sense of what to expect if you're considering this book.
I see that Amazon is not carrying this book presently, but I hope that is a temporary condition. Despite its having been published in 2000, it's still worthy of continued readership and we should hope that demand will be sufficient to induce Amazon to offer it again soon. On the other hand, perhaps an updated version is imminent and that explains its unavailability at the moment. Inasmuch as a bit of the intellectual terrain covered by the book has evolved over the last several years, it would be nice to see that reflected in an updated version.
A few comments regarding the author's integrity and intellectual standards are in order. I've seen his motives and scholarship impugned, and I've seen him charged with bias; but anyone who's read this book with an open mind would surely have to acquit him of such charges. His own work, based on what he's written in this book as well as the care with which he makes his case stands as a potent and vigorous defense: he amply demonstrates both his command of the relevant data and his commitment to seeking truth. Just because he has a point of view doesn't ipso facto make him biased. Only to the extent that he clings to his position in the face of convincing countervailing evidence can one legitimately make the charge of bias stick.
The fact of the matter is that he has meticulously examined the evidence supporting the purported causative link between cholesterol and heart disease and found it wanting. If anything, the charge of bias may more convincingly be directed at his critics. What he says on page 6 of the book is instructive in that regard: "True scientists put the solution to a medical problem first and not the preservation of their own hypothesis, no matter how clever the hypothesis may seem or how proud of themselves they may be for creating it." In view of the many holes in the cholesterol hypothesis, one can't help but question whether those still slavishly devoted to it are truly acting in the best scientific tradition, i.e., pursuing truth by strict adherence to scientific methods and standards.
Finally, I can't resist sharing the Epilogue from the book:
"After a lecture, a journalist asked me how she could be certain that my information was not just as biased as that of the cholesterol campaign. At first I did not know what to say. Afterwards I found the answer.
"She could not be certain. Everyone must gain the truth in an active way. If you want to know something you must look at all the premises yourself, listen to all the arguments yourself, and then decide for yourself what seems to be the most likely answer. You may be easily led astray if you ask the authorities to do this work for you.
"This is also the answer to those who wonder why even honest scientists are misled. And it is also the answer to those who, after reading this book, ask the same question."
This is a man who makes a strong case, but in the end exhorts the reader to think for himself. Revealing, and it struck me as refreshing in a world where there is no shortage of "authorities" who are all too ready to do our thinking for us.
Slight addendum:
As I mentioned, there are a number of very good, well written and positive reviews of this book here at Amazon. But reading the unfavorable reviews is useful as well, albeit there aren't very many of them. You'll note that most of them are vacuous and without merit, and therefore easily rejected. But even so, those and even the ones that seemingly have a bit more "meat" to them are ultimately likely to increase one's appreciation of this book if viewed in conjunction with the comments they've stimulated. (Note: I couldn't refrain from offering comments of my own in response to Erika Mitchell's "A Grain of Salt" 2-star review of November 17, 2005.)
Cholesterol fallacy exposed.......2007-04-11
Intelligent, scholarly, and earth shaking. Dr. Ravnskov, MD, PhD, impressively presents a vast body of evidence that debunks the decades long programming by the pharmaceutical corporations that cholesterol is the cause of heart disease. Dr. Ravnskov's work is a clarion call to all doctors, nutritionists, and patients to read this book before you take any statin drug.
Uncover your eyes (and your mouth).......2007-03-08
Dr. Ravnskov exposes the many methodological, epistemological, analytical and statistical errors abounding in many of the studies that have been hyped as final evidence of the Lipid Hypothesis.
As Dr. Ravnskov correctly says, "if a scientific hypothesis is sound, it must agree with all observations. A hypothesis is not like a sports event, where the team with the greatest number of points wins the game. Even one observation that does not support a hypothesis is enough to disprove it. The proponents of a scientific idea have the burden of proof on their shoulders. The opponent does not have an alternative idea; his task is only to find the weaknesses in the hypothesis."
Contrary to what the prevalent idea in the popular mind and the media, Medicine is not an exact science, and is very far from being one. Medicine deals with human phenomena, and human phenomena are of those scientists call complex (in fact, extremely complex), which means that any single phenomenon is affected by so many factors, that it is extremely difficult to isolate any one variable in the laboratory. This is further complicated by the fact that in dealing with the health of human beings, there are ethical issues involved, thus severely limiting the researcher's scope for experimentation.
In every science, even Physical and other Natural sciences, there is no such thing as a matter settled once and for all. Even in Physical sciences, where the possibility of isolating variables in experimentation is much more available to the researcher than in any science dealing with human phenomena, there is always the possibility that a theory that has been corroborated again and again is refuted in the future. Indeed, it happened to Newton's Law of Gravity! And still they pretend to tell you that issues such as the cholesterol controversy, dealing with a very complex phenomenon like CHD (Coronary Heart Disease), is a scientifically settled issue? Come on!
So whenever someone says to you that the cholesterol controversy is scientifically settled beyond any reasonable doubt, either he is plainly lying, or he is just a completely ignorant person who has no idea whatsoever about what science is.
After reading this book, your perspective about cholesterol will be much challenged.
My Father died at the age of 49 from an heart attack.......2007-02-27
On a diet of organic meat and organic veggies.
Please be kind to yourself and read " The China Study " or read only the reviews if you are too busy. Make up your mind now or tomorrow , but decide by yourself. Remember that in the US Big food is an 800 billion dollars and Medical Care is a 1 trillion seven hundreed billion dollars business a year.
Every year more than 700 000 Americans will die early from heart disease, something that could had be prevented an even reversed ( see the works of Dean Ornish and Colin Campbell )
Good luck !!
Oughta Be Required Reading ;).......2007-02-10
Wow; what an eye-opener! This book should be required reading for EVERY American. Chapter by chapter, Ravnskov systematically proves that the government, major medical organizations (like the American Heart Association), and the media have been lying to the public for years regarding the "danger" of cholesterol. There is no proof that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol levels. There is no proof that dietary cholesterol raises blood cholesterol levels. There is no proof that high blood cholesterol contributes to heart disease. Don't believe me? Read the book! Data don't lie, but scientists do. In study after study, the results were warped, portions conveniently omitted, and/or summaries just plain invented to convince readers of what the scientists WANTED to see. (A quick comparison of the graphs on pages 73 and 79 will clearly illustrate this data manipulation.) If you really care about your health, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

lots of great potluck selections.......2007-08-08
With school-age kids, I feel like I'm always bringing things for teacher-appreciation luncheons, etc. I have some dishes I'm used to making, but I needed some new ideas. I looked over some other potluck books, but I was impressed with the wide selection available in this book. So far I've made cream cheese stuffed mushrooms (excellent--and much easier than a stuffed mushroom recipe I used to make), greek vegetable salad, and an oven pasta with mushrooms and cheese. (I wouldn't make those dishes for my picky kids, but they are great for the teachers and staff.) I am favorably impressed and plan to check out some of the author's other cookbooks as well.
YUM YUM YUM.......2005-09-11
Few items purchased nowadays live up to expectations. This is a delightful exception. The receipes are well done, simple, tasty, and there is plenty of variety. Want to minimize your time in the kitchen? Want quality eats? Get this book!
Basic, but good.......2004-12-24
After some not so successful experiments with dishes at a recent family gathering, I decided to pick this one up. It's certainly not full of gourmet fare, but its full of the sort of thing everyone loves and remembers from when they were kids... familiar, stick-to-your-ribs recipes. Though the food is geared towards crowds (most recipes serve 6-8 people, so they're definitely going to be leftovers in our house when I make them). None of the recipes are complex, nor do they require outlandish ingredients, and are well within the grasp of all but the most inept chefs. This is a good, basic cookbook that anyone who enjoys cooking for a crowd would love.

More talk - less action.......2007-02-16
It is a nice book, but not what I expected. This book covers mostly the ideas behind some of the prominent "Natural Horsemanship" methods and gives a few basic exercises you can do with your horse (which was pretty much the same one/idea just different method). But then that was it. The book never expanded on what else you can do besides get your horse to go in a circle in a round pen, or walk over/around some poles.
If you want a book to explain the different "natural horsemanship" methods so you can decide which trainer(s) you would like to further learn from - this book will help you. If you are looking for a book which will give you exercises that you can do to get your horse thinking and moving with you, this book falls short.
This book is awesome.......2006-09-03
Lot's of good information and great pictures. It lists the ideas of several trainers so you can try various methods and see what works well for your horse. I carry it to the barn all the time and try to do something everyday. So far I used some of the parelli stuff, join-up and TTEAM, all of which have been helpful in its own way.

It was produced by the Library, School of Oriental and African Studies, in London, England. The "2003" hardback edition printed in early 2005 contains "with additions from 1993-2002." This annual volume is published as part of the 2004 subscription. It supersedes the advance issues published in 2003, as well as containing much data not previously published in "Index Islamicus." Included are publications in European languages relating to all aspects of Islam and the lives of Muslims, past and present. It covers all the countries of the world. These publications are in the form of: books, articles in periodicals & collective volumes, reviews (nearly always in periodicals, occasionally of sound recordings, films, videos, and electronic material), some online electronic texts. Excluded are: the contents of newspapers and periodicals published more frequently than once per month; "grey" literature (government and other official reports, bulletins, statistics); publications in non-European languages (except for a few bilingual texts); unpublished theses and dissertations; and news on the World Wide Web. Topics: countries, economics, legends, sociology, politics, Arab literature, military, law, sexuality, anthropology, folklore, geography, religion, women, migration, philosophy, etc. -- it seems that every topic is included.

Specific to Cauldon, Inc........2006-11-27
This is the finest book available on Cauldon, bar none. The pricing guides are helpful, the background information facinating, and although the photographs are sometimes a little out of focus, each page features multiple images of representative wares.
Cauldon for Collectors.......2006-04-22
Quite simply the best reference work currently available on the output of Cauldon Ltd. and its predecessors and sucessors for over a century including helpful pricing guides. Because Cauldon's tableware patterns alone ran to several tens of thousands, this book could not be expected to address individually all of the company's products, but it does cover a broad enough sampling to make it the definitive work on its subject matter. Kudos to Robert Cluett for giving us this book.

review by amanda g.......2006-12-13
Scared for your life in the midst of a civil war. Then put into a Sudanese refugee camp, disconnected from your father but left with your terrified mother and siblings. After a while, you are reunited with your father, and your entire family is together. Then in America, where you must start over in an alien place, where you get most of your possessions from dumpsters. This was the childhood experience that Mawi Asgedom underwent.
The book "Of Beetles & Angels" shows the extraordinary experiences throughout Mawi Asgedom's young life, which led him to America and to graduate from Harvard University. His amazing story shows the hardships, as well as the joyful occasions, as he discovers American culture and starts an American life. I thoroughly enjoyed his book and believe that I caught a glimpse at just how hard his childhood was.
The chapters within the book are separated into different stories and times of Mawi's life. This way, the reader truly gets to see how wonderful and cruel our country can be to those who are starting over in a new place, and how Mawi and his family start in a new and foreign place. The book also shows Mawi's experiences viewing racism, biased brutality, and what it is like to be noticeably different from most others around you. " Most of our classmates treated us nicely, others ignored us, and the rest -- well, we could only wish that they would ignore us. We may not have understood their words, but we always understood the meaning behind their laughter. `African boodie-scratcher! Scratch that boodie!' `Black donkey! You're so ugly!' `Why don't you go back to Africa where you came from?' We were just two, and they were often many. But they had grown up in a wealthy American suburb, and we had grown up in a Sudanese refugee camp. We were accustomed to fighting almost daily, using sticks, stones, wood chips, and whatever else we could get our hands on. So it was usually no contest, especially when the two of us double-teamed them, as we had done so many times in Sudan. The cruelty of brutal beatings and the name calling left Mawi and his older brother scared and unsure about their new found home America.
Mawi Asgedom's parents dreamed that their children would do well in school. The primary values that they taught their kids were that education was most important, knowledge was power, and that if all of the children within their family studied hard, they could earn scholarships and become smart and powerful leaders within their new country. Mawi kept his parents' values close and fulfilled them all. "I graduated from Harvard one year ago and have since thought much about my parents' dream. By earning my scholarship and graduating, I have fulfilled it. But along the way, I have found greater value in other dreams. And while Harvard University taught me well, my true education has come from less-likely sources. As I look back to the angels, the Charlenes and the Beth Raneys; as I look back to God's servants, dressed as beggrs and as beetles; as I look back to my inspirations, to the Mamas and Tewoldes, I see true guidance staring back at me. True power comes from focusing on what we can give, not what we can take." Mawi learned so much throughout his life and not only made his parents' dreams come true, but also made his own dreams come true.
This book, with all of its extraordinary detail and description, probably cannot entirely summarize all of the struggles, hardships, and rewards Mawi and his family endured from their journey to America and once in America. However, throughout the pages and dialogue of the story "Of Beetles & Angels", the book does an exceptional job of showing how unique Mawi Asgedom's life was as a child. I absolutely recommend this book.
eye opening.......2006-07-11
Beginning in 2001 I worked with two refugee families from Liberia. I wish I had read this book first, because it would have helped me to understand better the sorts of things these families might have experienced before they arrived in our country. While experiences of war, persecution and homelessness vary among people arriving in the USA, the feeling of confusion (even when you speak English, like 'my' families did) and dependence mixed with utter relief of finally getting here seem to be common among all. "My" families knew basic things, but our housing, food and school systems were totally overwhelming even for these educated people. And the police, which we're taught to depend upon, strike fear into every refugee I've ever met. Most of them have had bad experiences with police.
So when I read this book I could relate to some things, I cried over others, and I put others in the back of my mind to remember for when I'm working again with refugee immigrants, especially in these days of heated debates about immigrants.
Personally I think this book should be a must-read in every high school curriculum and for every teacher, not only because it's such a compelling story, but it helps us to see others through another lens and it is ultimately a story of hope.
From a strictly literature point of view there are better books out there, but this one tugs at the heart. And it's also a fast read if you want it to be.
An Inspiring Memoir of the American Dream .......2005-10-23
Of Beetles and Angles is the remarkable non-fiction account of Mawi Asgedom's jouney as an African war refugee to America and the obstacles that he and his family had to overcome. In his own words he describes his inspiring transformation into a man with traditional values and principles mixed in with the demands of everyday life in a new society. Influenced by his older brother and father, Mawi sets out to experience the American dream and more importantly, look upon each and every person as angels sent to test the will of our hearts.
Heart warming and inspiring.......2005-08-11
I won't take a lot of space stating what the book is about. Just get it and read it, everyone from middle school through adults. You'll be glad you did.
Miracles in many forms.......2005-01-24
This book told me one thing: everyone can be an angel. No matter in what form, that thing could be an angel.
From this story, a boy named Mawi was a refugee. His homeland had been involved in a war. His father decided the family would flee to Amerikha, as they called it. It was a place of peace, which was something that didnt exist in Eritrea, their homeland.
Many perils were made in America. Mawi needed to go to school, with his brothers and sister. He survived through prejudice and violence at school. His dream was to be welcomed with a scholarship into a special university. He worked very hard to achieve his goal.
How did it happen? Just read the book and find out!

The Fascinating World of Beetles.......2007-01-12
ISBN 0812094239 - If your child finds beetles fascinating, this book is most definitely for him or her! Otherwise, this isn't really a casual read - it's very educational and would be a superb resource for a science report. The illustrations, by Marcel Socias Studios are, even for those who don't particularly LIKE beetles, surprisingly beautiful. They are colorful, detailed and well explained.
Covering every aspect of the lives of beetles, and the various kinds of beetles, The Fascinating World of Beetles is, to my amazement, actually pretty fascinating. Where they live, how they live and what they eat, among other things, will have your favorite little bug collector enthralled. And, if you're using this for a report, it won't bore you. Not overly long, it packs a lot of information in 30 pages and has a Glossary in the back to quick reference.
