If you haven't read James M Cain yet, you have to check him out.

This Everyman's Library edition is a great introduction. You get a lot of story in a tidy little hardback. Good paper, readable print, a volume that practically begs to be held and a nice wee ribbon for a bookmark. And the price is right, too.

Cain's prose is lean, tight and wickedly sharp. Like a back-alley razor-fight, you don't even feel the cut until after you see the blood. By then, it's too late.

Movies have been made of Cain's work. Quite a few, actually. He's stayed in print in Europe for the last fifty years. His work has cast a long shadow over many of our most popular noir authors today.

I haven't been able to put this down since it arrived two days ago. I had
read some of James Cain's stories a long time ago, but in my opinion he is
the best detective writer of all. The movies don't follow his stories in
all cases, but they are still wonderful to read. A great collection!

Although Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler are better known today, James M. Cain (1892-1977) is at least their equal--and many consider that he bested both in his finest novels, which combined sin-blacked characters, sordid plots, terse prose, and all the power of a blast furnace. This anthology collects all three of his landmark novels as well as several short stories, all of them showing Cain at the height of his powers.

Published in 1934, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE is the truly deadly story of a drifter who squirms his way into a job at a California truck stop--and then squirms his way into the bed of a sexy waitress. Trouble is, the waitress is married to the boss... and she doesn't like it, not one little bit. Dripping with lust, deception, and irony, POSTMAN is at once sickening and fascinating, a true powerhouse of a novel that festers long after the story has ended.

DOUBLE INDEMNITY, published in 1936, is equally hot--the tale of an insurance sales man who stays on the right side of the law until he is tempted by a psychopathic femme fatale who doesn't see anything wrong with picking up a few bucks on the unexpected death of her unwanted husband. MILDRED PIERCE, published in 1941, is equally memorable in its portrait of a driven housewife with a wayward husband who discovers that she will do absolutely anything for her vicious, serpentine daughter.

All three novels have been famously filmed, but while the film versions (most created during the 1940s) stand well on their own, the novels out distance them in nothing flat. Cora, begging Frank to bite her lips until they bleed; Phyllis with lipstick splashed across her mouth like a bleeding gash; sleek Monte and his viper-like stepdaughter Veda--all portraits of reckless abandon so powerful that they blister the page.

The volume also includes five hard-to-find Cain stories that are often as memorable as the best of his novels, most notably I think "The Baby in the Ice Box" and "Brush Fire." But whether it is novels or his shorter works, you simply can't go wrong when it comes to the best of James M. Cain. Welcome to the inferno. Brace yourself for the straight-down ride.

I'm having trouble deciding which book is better, Children in the Night, (the first book in this series) or this book. This was very good, and very similiar to the first. Yosha and asel were in the book, but only briefly. The main characters more than took their place though. I would recommend this book, and the whole series to anyone.

Mind-gripping imagery, wonderful depth and creativity.......1998-01-15

Wonderful!! This second book suffers no middle child syndrome. I enjoyed the cameos by the cherished Yosha and Asel, tho missed their presence. However, the scepter is carried high and well by our new, young blind princess. As ever, the imagery is incredible - best read by candlelight.

comprehensive, encyclopedic.......2004-08-26

This medical dictionary is comprehensive and very informative. Its style is encyclopedic, meaning that it not only defines terms, but also continues into detail. I would highly recommend this dictionary to lay persons and to persons in entry-level medical positions.

Not a Complete Reference Book.......2003-09-20

I picked this book partly due to the fact that it came with the complete medical dictionary on a CD. It would be great to leave the book at school and install the software on my home computer...medical books are heavy!!!
Unfortunately, most of the medical words that I've had to look up in my courses have not been in this reference book. I'm taking a medical secretarial course, so this book would be a major disappointment for anyone taking nursing or medical.

Bad recipes.......2007-02-07

This is a lovely, cheerfully written cookbook, and only one recipe I have prepared from it has been any good. The rest are boring and flavorless. I love casseroles, but I've finally given up on this book.

These are too much work!.......2007-01-21

To me, the whole point of a casserole is "quick and easy," so I want recipes where I just dump things into the casserole dish and put them in the oven. But, like many other casserole and "hot dish" cookbooks, most of the recipes in this book require you to do a tremendous amount of cooking and prep before you put the stuff in the casserole dish -- and, since the ingredients are already cooked, why do they need an hour of baking time? Answer: so they can be called "casseroles" or "one-dish meals". Most of these things could be stirred together and served right after the stove-top cooking process (maybe with minor adjustments), without wasting another hour in the oven. I would also add that many of these casseroles are loaded with butter and are too fattening for me. I took this book out of the library and photocopied about a dozen things -- that was it.

Worst Cookbook Ever.......2004-08-14

I hate to disagree with the glowing reviews for this book but since I relied on the other reviews I had read to buy this book, I thought maybe a differing view would be useful. I am a seasoned cook and can say that this is one of the most poorly written cookbooks I have ever cooked from. I have made 3 recipes thus far. All have had major proportion issues and have lacked flavor. Even corrections I made as I went based on previous experiences could not save these recipes. If you like food that is basic in flavor (kinda like standard cafeteria fare) then you will probably like this book. If you like flavor in your food, then I suggest not buying this one.

Best Casseroles cookbook with fascinating informations!.......2004-03-11

Although it requires some extra time to assemble, I always have plenty leftover to eat on next day. Also, I can freeze them. It is worth of extra labor. We really LOVE Blue Plate Beef and Cheese Noodle and Classic Tuna Noodle Casserole. Those really surprised our guests! Villas really made this close to perfect ones. I enjoyed his details on how he adjusted specific foods and the recipes' history. I like one straight way to a best casserole than trying on many recipes people giving or I find thru magazines. This book is one! Strongly recommend this one!

I also like the big book of casseroles by Maryana Vollstedt. The recipes give ingredients that I have on hand. They are mostly from stratch, not canned ones. Comparing to both book, Crazy about Casseroles is more like Classic, International, and Historic ones while the The Big Book of Casseroles is more on from stratch and similar ingredients on other recipes. I love both books, anyway!!

Old School Cooking from an Old School teacher.......2004-01-16

James Villas has written a book which may succeed in single-handedly succeed in reviving an interest in the great American casserole. I'm not entirely sure what the trendy term `old school' means, exactly, especially as I have mostly seen it in connection with motorcycles, but I am certain that Jim Villas is an `old school' culinary writer and that casseroles are an `old school' kind of food.

Jim Villas, although much younger, belongs to the James Beard school of culinary writing, along with his Beard protégés Barbara Kafka and Marian Cunningham. As he recounts in this book, the American casserole, based on several different European precursors, clearly reached it's apotheosis after World War II and went into eclipse in the late seventies and eighties with the scorning of canned and otherwise processed ingredients.

That the casserole is making a comeback is also clear from both this book and from it's starring role in a recent episode of Alton Brown's very trendy `Good Eats' Food Network show.

In the introduction to the book, Villas eschews some of the less savory casserole ingredients of yore such as canned meats and vegetables, frozen chives, dried parsley flakes, processed cheeses, liquid smoke, MSG, crushed potato chips or canned fruit cocktail. He is not entirely born again, since he does embrace some traditional casserole roles and ingredients such as canned soups, frozen vegetables, dried noodles, bread stuffings, and leftovers. In fact, some themes are so close to the `Good Eats' episode that I suspect Alton Brown may have used this book as a reference for his show.

The book opens with a very worthy introduction on casserole `hardware' materials and sizes plus advice on freezing casseroles. The casserole pantry repeats the theme of a reasonable use of prepackaged ingredients, citing Campbell's condensed cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, and cream of celery soups as essential. Some recipes even state that he tried to create the casserole with a homemade replacement for the Campbell's product and found the home brewed substitute wanting.

The names of casserole types are a feast for the crossword puzzle addict. There are quiches, stratas, scrambles, pilafs, pies, perloos, surprises, suppers, shroupes, royales, supremes, puddings, bakes, gratins, souffles, cobblers, crisps, crunches, and delights. Some of these names such as quiches, pilafs, and souffles indicate that the author may be coloring outside the lines a bit here and there, but I do not find this a criticism of the book. It adds to the value of the book as a source of good one-dish meals centered on the American classic. The author also seem to color outside the lines a bit when he includes some of his own recipes, but as Jim Villas has recently acquired the status of a classic American writer, I will give him a pass to contribute classic recipes himself.

This is one of my favorite kinds of cookbooks, as it makes it easy to find a recipe to fit a particular need. Anyone who shares that attitude about cookbooks will do well to purchase a copy of this book.

Awesome book. Compiles some related information that is not in many basic books on teaching riding. This is a good source of information for green and experienced riding teachers. It has the basics described in other teaching texts, while also going into some depth on related subjects. The case studies are a nice touch. Also in this book are ideas that may help experienced teachers regain enthusiasm for their task - the best of us have times when what we do taps out our energy for doing more of it. This has also been used as a college textbook.

Two fine equestrian instructionals are highly recommended picks for those with more than a casual interest in the sport. Jill K. Hassler-Scoop's Equestrian Instruction provides an integrated approach to learning and teaching to supplement riding teachers' instructions and experience. Equestrians are instructed on how to improve their riding and teaching skills alike, with chapters exploring the basics of developing consistency, teaching open-mindedness to students, and achieving results in horse riding lessons. Plenty of case histories provide practical examples of teaching and riding challenges in action.

As both a teacher and rider I found this book full of great ideas and perspectives. I have purchased it for the younger instructors in our barn because it covers aspects of teaching that no other book covers like communication styles, burnout, professionalism, lesson planning, and other tools to enhance riding and teaching. Each section has an excellent bibliography that is helpful. Great book for both new and old instructors.

Wow - a great book for both riders and instructors. Coming from both perspectives, I was very impressed on the information I was able to take out and apply to my own program. Stunning book for anyone with land..........2007-08-09

So many visual ideas in this book with practical "how to" advice as well! Full of color photo's of beautiful landscaping along with clear instructions on how to do things like stonework, steps, paving, walls, etc. I've just purchased some land on a mountain in a rural location and I'm very glad to have this book. Highly recommended.

A pillow-book for gardeners.......2005-09-06

I was a flat-land gardener most of my life, and when we retired and moved to a house with a backyard that sloped steeply down to a small river, I needed ideas on how to landscape our new property.

"Hillside Landscaping" is a sort of pillow book for gardeners. The majority of its beautiful photographs show landscapes that gardeners of modest means can only dream about. I used the book to point out photographs of steps and retaining walls that I liked to the local landscaping firm, then we'd have a good laugh about the price, and work out cheaper compromises. For instance, instead of stone steps I now have wooden stairs leading down to the river.

Don't misunderstand me, though. There are some very good ideas in this book. For instance, we used the suggestion to zig-zag the stairs down the slope, both to make the climb a bit easier (the slope varies from about 1:6 to 1:2) and to make the journey to the river more interesting.

This book is divided into five sections:

* "Understanding your Terrain"--this section is very important, no matter how much money you plan to spend. It discusses types of hillsides (most especially the severity of the slope) , drainage considerations, and whether or not the landscape needs to be reshaped, e.g. terraced.

* "Inspiring Ideas"--beautiful photographs of slopes, decks, patios, steps, retaining walls, water features, etc. with suggestions on placement, materials, and plantings.

* "It's all in the planning"--a very useful chapter, including the ABCs of garden design, and the mechanics of plotting your property. One of this chapter's suggestions that we plan to implement is a 'dry creekbed' to drain water from our backyard slope.

* "Building on slopes"--Many landscaping features such as fences are more challenging to build on a slope. This chapter explains what factors you need to consider when building or gardening on a slope. I learned NOT to pull up weeds and saplings from their downhill side, after yanking out a small alder, losing my balance, and tumbling over the dry-stone retaining wall and down the steps. It was a cheap way of conducting my own bone density scan, but I wouldn't recommend this procedure to anyone else! I was also very glad that we had decided to build the steps out of wood, not stone.

"Hillside Landscaping" is useful as well as beautiful and can be used by do-it-yourselfers as well as those of us who plan to hire the muscle to move the stones and build the steps.

I live in Southern California where there are hills galore. I thought the book showed very pretty pictures and has nice planting tips, but it wasn't very helpful for homeowneres like my husband and I who wanted to try and landscape ourselves. I also purchased a book called Inspirational Terracing which was able to help my husband and I really landscape our yard ourselves with instructions and wonderful ideas for any situation and the author built all the landscapes himself, using afordable stones that the average person can lift. The book has beautiful pictures and it was very useful. It made me wonder how Hillside Landscaping got all their pictures, I think anyone can drive around and take pictures of landscapes that other people have built and work hard to maintain and beautify and turn around and make money off of other peoples hard efforts. It seemed more like a magazine than a book,it had beautiful scenery but used only materials that top notch contractors with huge equiptment, charging heafty prices could pull off. These landscapes are not for the person with an average house, only the upper class, homeowners could never afford these landscapes and nearly all of them could never be attempted by the homeowner.

We bought a hillside property a few years ago and didn't know what to do to beautify our slope and make it more useful for gardening and outdoor living. This book gave us a lot of great ideas plus we tried some of the projects in it. The instructions were easy to understand and everything came out great. We really recommend the book!

Too small photos, landscaping is about pictures,not words...
Pictures can say a thousand words. This book does not have large enough ones and thus does not have much to say. If your looking for a book that says 140,000 words, buy Inspirational Terracing,one man designed and built them all, all by himself, and that says more than any landscaping book i have ever picked up and to think it is just a portion of his work blows my mind. Talk about dealing with slopes and hillsides, i have never seen better in 40 years.Landscapes definition means picture. I wonder what his next book will be like, maybe he will name it Conquering hillsides using Faith. I suppose Hillside landscaping by susan lang says some good things but i wonder if susan has really ever gotten her hands dirty and picked up a pic ax and slammed it into a hillside.

Traditional woodblock prints preserve a Chinese folk art that has now nearly vanished. This book explores and explains the artistic and aesthetic bases of popular prints revealed in eighty-four late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century prints belonging to the London-based Muban Foundation.

Woodblock printing was the principal method of producing inexpensive and colorful single-sheet images for mass consumption in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century China. Prints of this type are known today as "New Year pictures" because the demand for them peaked at New Year's time. However, the term "popular print" more accurately describes these works, whose subjects include deities and tutelary spirits, illustrations to stories and operas, and even contemporary political or revolutionary messages.

The emphasis on the artistic aspects of these prints makes this publication uniquely appealing to Chinese art historians but also to those interested in Chinese anthropology, popular religion, Chinese and other folk art, and traditional crafts.

Ellen J. Laing received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She was Maude I. Kerns Distinguished Professor of Oriental Art, University of Oregon and is currently Research Associate at the Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan. She has published numerous scholarly articles, books, and reference works on Chinese art.

Excellent Book.......2007-08-30

I was interested in reading this book because I am a latino male who's been involved with African American women since I can remember. I watned to read this book to inform mysself about how it was like to be an African American woman in America. I've discovered that they are very strong and have gone through alot in their lives from the stories of the many women in this book. I had read this book about a two or three years ago and it was very informative, but I know that there is still much to learn.

When I say "Hard", I mean this book is so strong! This book took me a while to read because I had to take breaks in between each woman's story...I could identify with more than one woman's story (I'm sure a lot of people will be able to) and that's what makes this book worth every page...I recommend it to anyone who feels as though the struggles they deal with are only theirs...

Tricia Rose turns academic research into a literary masterpiece. She interviewed 20 African American females with various ethnic backgrounds, broad range of age, and socioeconomic upbringing. Rose organized the real life commentaries on sex, intimacy, relationships, and race into a narrative that will carry you through a broad range of emotions. The women speak truth to situations that happen in every day life but are considered taboo in the African American community.
Rose starts the book with a discussion about the negative stereotypes in regards to sex and intimacy that are portrayed about the African American female in the media. The purpose of the book was developed as an attempt to answer the question, "how has the history of race, class, and gender inequality in this country affected the way that black women talk about their sexual lives?" Rose answered this question and much more. Longing to Tell is a mirror image of African American female sexuality in contemporary society as well as an oral history that serves as a vibrant presentation for everyday readers and scholars alike.
The stories are captured and categorized into three different areas: Through the Fire; Guarded Heart; and Always Something Left to Love. The women, whose names and locations have been changed to protect their anonymity, openly discuss their sexual history; how they learned about sex, masturbation, orgasms, and experience of first menstruation, virginity, pregnancy, and motherhood; sexual abuse, rape, sexism, sexual fantasy and sexual orientation. Some of the tales in the book are horrendous such as incest, rape, domestic abuse and sexual harassment but while knocked down these women were not knocked out. Many tell about the love from friends, family and at times even the smiles of strangers brought them back from the depths of despair. The stories are all different and engaging as their experiences were dynamic while thought provoking. Does your definition of sexuality characterize how you live life?
Longing To Tell is an extraordinary account on how African American women survive despite the incredible odds against them. As an adjunct professor of African American Studies, I highly recommend this book as a study into the mind of black women. As an avid reader, I strongly encourage you to read this book as a motivational guide on finding your way out of the struggle. African American women are the cornerstones of modern society and this book proves that!

Sexual Testimonies.......2004-06-23

Take a literary journey with Tricia Rose, author of LONGING TO TELL,
and read some revealing, heartbreaking, and inspiring narratives from
a host of women of color who talk about sexuality, race, and their
coming of age as a woman.

Tricia Rose begins by sharing with readers the purpose and reason for
this unusual project which opened up doors to allow these unknown and
unspoken women of color to tell their stories. The women outlined in
the book is of various ages, economic, and educational backgrounds. The extensive research and countless interviews propel this author's thought-provoking narratives from women breaking through a sexuality barrier that has always been unspoken of through generations of people of color.

LONGING TO TELL rises to the occasion, orchestrating a context that speaks from the voices of women on their sexual relationships, and intimate clichés that thrust many into a naive state of ignorance and misinterpreting the art of intimacy.

The women's names were changed along with other details to protect
their identity due to some very graphic details in which they
outlined their exposure to sexuality. It was a hard lesson for many
and a rude awakening for others. They speak on growing up in
dysfunctional surroundings, exposure to drugs, and going from one
relationship to another. Several grew up with the pretense that if
you had sex it meant love.

They explain how their families and children had to endure their

unorthodox and self-destructive behaviors that sometimes lead to
tragic consequences. One woman speaks of how her young son was
beaten to death by her boyfriend, and never realized the warning signs
because she stayed in a haze of drugs. They speak candidly about their first sexual encounters with men and women. They speak on where they were and where they are today. They explain their process of healing along the path to finally taking control of their lives.

All the women's narratives speak volumes on the depth and courage that made them survivors. In the end, the author sums up very eloquently the overall dynamics of the sexual ramifications that women of color encounter today.

LONGING TO TELL by Tricia Rose is a well written book. Tears came to my eyes several times reading some of the stories, and I wanted to jump into the book and hug and congratulate each woman on revealing their personal journey. I applaud Ms. Rose for her insight and courage to develop, research, and talk with so many women who are sisters, mothers, aunts, wives, and friends offering them an outlet in which to speak. A must read for everyone because knowledge is the key to understanding and awareness. (...)

I Highly Recommend this book.......2004-06-04

Longing to Tell consists of 20 Black women telling their stories about sex
and intimacy. The women range from 19 to 48 and all have powerful stories
to tell about their experiences.

All women discussed what it meant to be intimate or have intimacy with a
person. Intimacy was broadly defined and included more than just a sexual
relationship and included relationships with family and friends. Most
women defined intimacy in similar terms: a reciprocal relationship with
someone where you can let down your guard and express yourself without out
fear of being judged or criticized.

Other themes that arose in the course of the book were Black women's
relationships with Black men. Some of the women had horrific experiences
attempting to love and sustain a relationship with Black men, and while
some woman had sworn off of Black men and were dating outside the race or
were lesbians, most women were committed to finding love with a Black man.

The negative stereotypes of Black women in the media and particularly those
perpetuated by Black artists were discussed. Sexism within the Black
community was also explored including the stress experienced by Black women
of having to navigate racism and sexism on the outside and then having to
come home to a situation where a woman's contribution and independence are
not valued and where a woman was sometimes viewed as little more than
property.

The most disturbing subject in the book was sexual violence against women.
Many (if not most) of the women interviewed told stories of incest,
molestation, rape, sexual harassment or sexual degradation. The book
forcefully brought home the point of how vulnerable Black girls and women
are to sexual abuse and also helped me see that sexual abuse against Black
women unfortunately really is not all that surprising when one considers
that Black women have been and continue to be the objects of sexual
degradation in the media and little more than property in relationships.
Until Black women are valued for the contributions they bring to the
society as whole and to relationships in particular, it will continue to be
"OK" to continue the sexual violence against our girls and women.

Despite all the negativity directed at Black women, the book highlighted
the fact that Black women are an exceptional group who live in a world
where racism and sexism (within and without the Black community) affect our
daily lives. Nonetheless, we are the keepers of the family and the
maintainers of our men. The abuse we are subject to is unparalleled, but
we still strive. The book captured this uniqueness of Black women and a
way that I have never seen expressed before.

I would highly recommend this book to all Black women as it represents a
celebration of all that we are. Additionally, in reading this book I was
also struck by how much Black men could benefit from the stories, and I
also highly and enthusiastically recommend this book to Black men.
