#17 an' still going strong?.......2007-04-08
The Pillars of the Earth
In the Brother Caedfael mysteries we get a very different
look at life in the 12th century from that given by Ken Follett.
In some ways I think Follett captured the feel of "life" better
in his failed historical novel than Ellis Peters does in his admittedly successful series?
We get a very different take on the local royalty and how they interacted with their peasants in a feudal setting.
In this novel someone dead and unsuspected is the plot twist
An intriguing read.......2006-11-05
This entry in the Brother Cadfael series presents a more complex tale of good, evil, and the grey area in between, than often is the case in this series. There is the usual happy ending in terms of the young couple united in the course of the story, but the resolution of the guilty party is surprising and somewhat unsettling.
Not over until, well, yes it is!.......2006-09-12
In this book events are set in motion promptly with an inter-abbey swap of plots, a brother who has found his calling late, and another good man gone thanks to King Stephen's rashness. [And still they love him! Shakespeare was on to something.] As the story unfolds a skeletonized body is found and the hunt is on to identify it. A second son [he who doth not inherit] leads a tortured existence. A bride to be is less than angelic. All good stuff. The story proceeds apace until the denouement and then you wonder. Did Peter's get tired? Bored? Busy? Well, plot ending aside, the characters are richly developed and that has to be enough!
Buried memories.......2006-05-12
In this 17th chronicle of the detective monk, Brother Cadfael is asked to help to identify the body of a woman who was discovered when the monks of the Abbey of St.Peter and St.Paul began to till a field which had just been donated to them. The field was previously occupied by Ruald, a local potter who abandoned his wife of many years to become a monk, claiming that he had a divine calling from God, and the fact that he was leaving his wife neither free nor widowed, was immaterial. Local rumour has it that Ruald's wife, Generys, ran off with a lover and, as she was a very beautiful woman who certainly did not appreciate being dumped, even for God, this rumour was generally accepted. It's the year 1143 and the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Maud is still raging, with the armies of both sides doing great damage to the countryside and the people. When an Abbey in the fens was seized by renegade soldiers under Geoffrey de Mandeville, the monks were forced to flee to safety and one of them, a young man who was still a novice, comes to Shrewsbury. Sulien Blount is the younger son of a local noble family and begs admission to the Abbey to continue his novitiate. Sulien has a ring belonging to Generys and claims that he obtained it recently from a silversmith near the besieged Abby, which proves that she is still alive and so the body which was found cannot be hers. When the Sheriff, Hugh Beringar is commanded by the king to take a troop of soldiers to the fens to flush out the marauders, he takes the opportunity to visit the silversmith to find out the truth about Generys ring. Between them, Cadfael and Hugh discover the truth behind the body which was buried in unconsecrated ground...an unbelievably shocking thing in those times.
Extremely well written - a gentle & interesting story.......2001-02-09
I found this (unabridged audio) book at the library - knew nothing about the series or the author. What a pleasant surprise! Very well written, a meticulously crafted story that gently unfolds in a way that engages you from the start without any bumps or discrepancies, using a language and style that seem to come from the very times that it describes. Written with an obvious affection for the characters portrayed. And Stephen Thorne's narration is equally masterful. My recent joy at discovering that there are at least 17 other books in the series had my daughters rolling their eyes like crazy in the bookstore. Can't wait to read more!

Mindless fun........2002-12-31
Michael Moorcock, Kane of Old Mars (Warriors of Mars/Blades of Mars/Barbarians of Mars) (Lancer, 1965)
For the first book and a half of this trilogy, I had no idea what Moorcock was on about. Then I did a little research and found out Moorcock was parodying Edgar Rice Burroughs; that helped put things more into perspective and helped me get over some of my usual annoyances with many fantasy writers (the plethora of exclamation points and one-sentence paragraphs, etc.); traps Moorcock usually doesn't fall into.
Once that was behind me, I enjoyed these three books quite a bit more. The astoundingly cheesy premise herein is that a writer, Edward Bradbury (under which pen name the books were originally published), encounters and befriends one Michael Kane while vacationing in the south of France. Kane is a physicist who previously worked for the military but went off to the private sector to develop what he calls a matter transference machine (in this post-Star Trek world, we know them better as transporters or teleporters). Its only problem is that, when Kane tests it on himself, it sends him not to the receiving transference machine, but to Mars millions of years ago, a Mars that is full of thriving communities. They are, of course, at war with one another or in tenuous peace treaties that could erupt into war at any moment, leading to many examples of Kane's ability to show off the swordfighting techniques he learned as a child (how coincidental!), while forging alliances between peoples who have been at war for generations and earning the respect of all he encounters. It's high silliness of the order to be found in old Douglas Fairbanks pictures from the silent era (or the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, presumably).
Moorcock keeps the pages turning, and each of the books is slim; it's possible to get through one of them in a lazy afternoon and still have time to tackle thirty of forty pages of the newest Danielle Steel potboiler, if one is so inclined. Just don't be expecting great literature. For that matter, don't be expecting material up to Moorcock's usual high standards. Just turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. ***
If you like John Carter of Mars.............2001-03-03
......then you will like this book. Personally I prefer the John Carter stories to Kane of Old Mars. However, these are definitely worth reading.
One of the best Moorcock..........2000-09-22
I read these books before the were combined into one, and they were in there second printing. Personally this book is much better than the Elric Saga, and much better writen. Kane makes this time machine, hoping to well, go back in time, but it takes him back in time to when Mars had life. This machine also lets him come back to his own time on earth, and the orignal three books were written as he retold his story the three times he came back. Read these if your a Moorcock fan..they are worth it.
nice idea, little rough.......2000-09-21
it's a nice read, but it'll only take an afternoon or two to finish. Very predictable at points, the stories all seemed like they were rushed. A map of the planet would have also been helpful.
A good title to check out of the library for a lazy weekend.
A fitting homage to Burroughs.......2000-02-12
It's an exciting adventure story as other reviewers have already stated. I would definitely recommend picking this up on a rainy afternoon and escaping.
Did anyone else notice the 'game' with anagrams of other authors names played as Kane was flying over the islands (I won't say more, work it out for yourself).

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!!.......2007-08-29
I have about 18 years of lifting under my belt and I would say this is a great book gives you everything you need to workout in the time that you have, and it has the principles built in so you dont have to know how many sets and reps for certain results. You want to getting leaner it tells you, want to bulk a little it tells you that I think its very practical and clear. Highly reccomend this book. Many books give you wacky principles and try to sell you I think this book is right on the money.
Handy to have!.......2007-03-09
This book is well organized and offers an incredible amount of varied exercise routines and options that will fit into anyone's busy day.
Exercise equipment:
- Offers exercise equipment choices for home gym, commercial gym and people who have nothing to use.
Exercise routines timeframes and schedules:
- This book is chockfull of exercise programs from; 10 minute, 1 day per week workouts to 60 minute, 6 days per week workouts.
Goals:
- Offers well-timed programs for specific goals, i.e. lean body plan, instant muscle plan, power plan and complete body plan.
What this book is not:
- This book is not for those who want to focus primarily on hardcore body building.
- This book is not for people who are looking for periodization training for a specific sport.
To summarize, this book is packed with a multitude of well illustrated exercise programs. These programs offer good variations in both skill and intensity. The routines in this book mostly utilize compound exercises (squats, deadlfts, lunges and bench pressing), these exercises work multiple muscle groups, making for very efficient workouts.
This book is perfect for people who want to simply focus on getting stronger in the amount of time that they have to do so. The goal of the author is to get people moving and he achieves that with great success.
A BEGINERS BOOK.......2007-01-19
DONT EXPECT TO LOOK LIKE THE GUY ON THE FRONT COVER ANY TIME SOON.IF YOU WANT THAT LEAN BODY LOOK GO FOR IT.YOU WILL GET IN SHAPE FOLLOWING THIS BOOK,THERE IS NEVER ANY MAGIC IN ANY ONE BOOK.
Balanced isolation exercises, poor on research, very personal approach.......2006-08-24
Starting with chapter 4 reduces my frustration with the author's inexperience and sloppy research. The chapter lists 48 exercises, each on two facing pages, with and without equipments. This is the brunt of the book which demonstrates good form, motion, and ideas of strengthening isolated muscle groups. It only has few bad ideas such as the side leg lunges with a barbell, front squat with crossed forearms, and lousy shoulder press form. The rest of the book is mere personal delusion, crammed with improvised and poorly researched information. Many chapters are there to fill the pages with repetitive and unsubstantiated information.
Early in the book, the author claims to have the good news that "exercising once a week" is still okay. No research or expert confirmation is rendered to support such suspicious opinion. The anatomy information shows the author's reliance on common unscientific information as follows.
(1) The rectus abdominis muscle is described as the flexor of the torso on the pelvis. The fact is that it only pulls the sternum to the pubis, i.e.; it flexes the spines and anchors the oblique and transversus muscles by tensing the linea alba in the middle of the abdomen.
(2) The author could not spell the name of the Deltoid muscle. Instead, he describes the shoulder muscle as having three muscles. The rotator cuff muscles are totally dropped off the shoulder anatomy.
(3) The Trapezium muscle is described to originate from the back of the skull. Then it is claimed it depresses the shoulder plates. It is also described as a triangular muscle while it is trapezoid, as its name suggests. The fact is that, besides the back of the skull, the Trapezium originates also from the spines of the neck and torso. Its fibers have three major directions from its origin to its insertion.
(4) The chest muscles, pectoralis major and minor, are described as the pullers of the arms in lying down position. As if the two muscles have no function in stabilizing the chest cage during aggressive breating, or overall fitness.
You could go on and on to find out that the author's sloppy research undermines his ability to offer a reliable source of information. One obnoxiously displayed table that spans two pages only lists the number of seconds of rests versus the number of repetitions per set. From chapter 5 to the end, the author entertains the same boring style of repeating exercises to fit different numbers of weekly sessions and duration of training.
The positive contribution of the book, in terms of combining well balanced exercises in each session, shows the author's potential for developing better product has he improved his research and deepened his experience. The worst mistake on all training cycles is the start with squat exercise. That requires well warmed up spinal structures, robust cardiovascular system, and entire body conditioning. Squat should never start any work out unless it remains extremely light. The argument that "squat requires a lot of energy and should come early in a workout, before the exerciser fatigues" has been around for sometime. Yet, experience proved that fatigue level adapts to progressive incremental strengthening.
So, what is wrong with devoting 300 pages of a book to describe a 10-minute exercise per week?
1- It is wrong on emphasizing that building muscles is the main foundation of strengthening. Muscles, bones, balance, and cardiopulmonary fitness could benefit more from brief and simple exercises such as running, push ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups. Those take less than 10-pages to describe.
2- It propagates fallacious information which people should avoid, especially when they have to spend their earnings to acquire.
3- It lacks any research other than narrow personal opinion with many short sighted approaches.
4- It could cause more harm than good when it fails to explain the risks of exercising inconsistently and arranging exercises in poor sequence.

Body sculpting resource........2006-04-02
A prospect came up to me and told me that they wanted to sculpt their bodies into shape.I knew he meant what he said, and it was up to me to come up with a thorough program. So I decided to look at different resources.I came across Mark Verstegen's "core workout" and Myatt Murphy's book.I bought both books, and I found Murphy's book to be more focused on body sculpting-not to mean that there is something wrong with Mark's book.
This book has wonderul workouts that you could utilize depending on the amount of time you have available, I found this to be a powerful resource, whenever I have a client with only 30 minutes to spare.
I am competent in designing and implementing workouts, but there are times when I feel that my clients need something different, and thats where the "48 anytime exercises" come in.
This book will definitely get you that gladiator look.

Book Description
THE NIMAN RANCH COOKBOOK traces the unlikely transformation of a modest family endeavor into a respected model of sustainable farming one that is supported by more than 500 independent family farmers raising livestock according to Niman Ranch 's strict animal husbandry protocols. Focusing on the beef, pork, and lamb sides of the business, Bill Niman and San Francisco Chronicle food writer Janet Fletcher introduce us to the Niman ranchers, their well-cared-for animals, and a fast disappearing but ultimately essential way of living, eating, and doing business. Now home cooks can bring Niman Ranch from the farm to their dinner tables with 40 fail-safe recipes contributed by renowned chefs who serve Niman Ranch products in their restaurants. Frank Stitt's Steak au Poivre, Mario Batali's Penne alla Gricia, and Suzanne Goin 's Grilled Tri-Tip with Black Olive Aïoli are presented alongside illustrated meat charts, easy-to-follow cooking techniques, and more than 120 full-color food and location photographs. THE NIMAN RANCH COOKBOOK is an unprecedented showcase for an unparalleled company whose dedication to compassionate farming and responsible land stewardship is as easy to love as its delicious meat.
Customer Reviews:
PR, animal husbandry and restaurant recipes.......2006-05-24
Most of the text of this book explains the origins and growth of Niman Ranch meats--describing the methods used by the small farms and farmers who raise their meat to be sold under the Niman Ranch label. The book mostly stays away from preachiness, giving well-thought-out descriptions and surprising sidebars (i.e., a discussion of nitrates and their presence in the atmosphere--where most of the nitrates we consume originate). A lot of the text is outright advertising for the Niman brand, but the most interesting parts concern the lives and methods of the small farmers. A small section at the end contains very creative recipes from restaurant customers of Niman Ranch products--mostly from both coasts (inexplicably including a not-very-exciting recipe from "Chipotle"--owned by McDonald's--a chain which I tend to doubt actually uses Niman products).
If you can find it, however, Niman Ranch pork is outstanding.

Presenting a splendidly organized and illustrated book to simplify the identification of and search for heirloom sets of Noritake china. It consists of four sections showing some 700 patterns (1891-1953) with their backmarks, names and numbers, and hundreds of color photos. Offering several newly discovered patterns and adding significantly to the study of Oriental porcelains, this book will be a great relief to the owners, collectors, and dealers who must cope with the many mysteries related to early Noritake china. 2000 values. AUTHORBIO: Aimee Alden was a Noritake collector and dealer for many years, and she authored two works, Early Noritake China in 1987, and Collector's Encyclopedia of Early Noritake in 1995. REVIEW: This book deals solely with tableware produced by the company founded by the Morimura family between about 1891 and the 1950s, when today's familiar "N-in-wreath" trademark was adopted by the Noritake Company and post-World War II exporting was resumed.

Excellent book.......2001-01-02
I found this book to be very useful. It's very well organized and well written. An only suggestion for the next edition is to have glossier/brighter/clearer photographs.
User freindly and Informative - A MUST for any Collector!.......2000-03-30
I found this book to be logical and informative. The foundation of this book is based upon the chronilogical use of each mark. The patterns are then listed alphabetically within the time period that "mark" was used. Because of this book - all my freinds and colleages think of me as a "Early Noritake Expert" - I dont have the heart to tell them that I am not! I highly recommend this book to any and all collectors and/or dealers of Noritake!

Not what I expected........2007-05-12
This book was a dissapointment for me. I don't have an unlimited budget for store design and most of the businesses featured in this book clearly did. There are a few exceptions to this in the book, but if you're a small business looking for ideas to freshen up your store, I would not recommend this book.
Not relavent for most businesses.......2007-02-25
This book is basically just a picture book of expensive stores most of us can't afford to shop in (the ones with 2 pairs of shoes on one entire wall, and 3 items on fancy hangers on the other wall). Most of the displays are designed so specifically around the products so it's difficult to even use the pictures as inspitration for different types of merchandise.
We got much more inspiration from the book "Store Presentation & Design" by Vsiual Reference Publications.

Customer Reviews:
not very helpful.......2005-08-15
Bought this and the Visual Merchandising book from the same publishers. Not much useful information here. These very basic overviews of dated store designs would only be useful to a complete novice.
If you are a retail designer you are better off going to your local mall and using your own powers of observation.
Pretty Stores that Sell Product.......2005-08-15
This collection features interior store designs, judged for excellence in store planning, visual merchandising, innovation, graphics and lighting design. Full-color photos and detailed captions of these 43 leading-edge establishments capture a large range of retail spaces.
The stores that have been selected for inclusion in this book range from South Korea (a full-line department store), to the Victoria's Secret in Troy, Michigan, a specialty food shop in Australia, a supermarket in Mexico, to a new look at Harrods in London.
As with other arcitecture picture books, this is a book to give you ideas about the design of stores that will attract prospects and turn them into customers. The stores themselves vary from free standing buildings to spaces within malls. While these stores are pretty, the overall function of the store is not forgotten.

Book Description
When people think of a grocery store, they have a multitude of images from a neighborhood shop on the corner to the modern-day supermarket. The grocery store has had a rich history, as business conditions have contributed to changes in both its economic and its architectural character. This book provides a history of the grocery store. Beginning with the public markets and general stores of our early cities and the general stores of small towns and hinterlands, this volume traces the evolution of the all-purpose grocery store with the advent of mass distribution, the growth of the supermarket, and the present-day convenience stores, co-ops, warehouse markets, hypermarkets, and wholesale clubs.

Although the author opens with a visit to her mother's native Ireland at 12 and ends with lighting candles in her new home in County Cork four decades later, this is no nostalgic memoir about getting back to your roots. Alice Carey has crafted a tough-minded examination of her complicated relationship with her heritage, a warm tribute to the theatrical free spirits who helped liberate her from an unhappy childhood. She grew up in Queens; her father often hit her and flew into a rage when his wife dared to augment the family's meager finances by working as a maid for Broadway producer Jed Harris. Helping Mammie in the afternoons, Alice glimpsed a glamorous, sophisticated world beyond the constraints of Catholic school and Celtic fatalism. She moved to Greenwich Village in her teens and made her life as a Manhattanite with a weekend home in Fire Island. When AIDS decimated that community in the 1990s, she and her husband moved to Ireland. Making an 18th-century farmhouse habitable is a black comedy Carey describes with a sardonic wit that echoes her Irish forebears and gay friends but is uniquely her own (she names "the Seven Dwarves of Restoration: Happy, Reluctant, Fearful, Suspicious, Wary, Hopeful, and Doubtful"). Her journey towards a new identity as "a real New Yorker living in Ireland" is all the more moving because it is chronicled with sharp perceptiveness and without sentimentality. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
The only child of poor Irish immigrants, Alice Carey's isolated childhood in a cold-water flat in Queens is transformed when her mother becomes maid to legendary Broadway producer Jean Dalrymple. In Ms. Dalrymple's Upper East Side townhouse, young Alice absorbs with delight a sophisticated theatrical culture that includes such notables as Jed Harris and Marilyn Monroe. Then, a visit to Ireland with her mother thrusts young Alice into another novel culture, one that simultaneously enchants and traumatizes her. When Alice returns to Ireland as an adult, she and her husband serendipitously find and fall in love with a ruined Georgian farmhouse. As they begin to convert the stables into a livable cottage, Alice unearths buried memories of a childhood played out in wildly divergent homes. I'll Know It When I See It is the witty and rueful examination of her struggles to make sense of—and peace with—her recollections of a bittersweet past. It is a book bound to appeal to a wide range of readers: Irish, New Yorkers, theater folk, and all those longing to buy a house in the old country.
Customer Reviews:
Finding "Home".......2007-02-02
Alice Carey read at the West Side YMCA's Writer's Voice on February 18, 2005. This is from my introduction to the event.
For most people, what probably drew them, or will draw them to this memoir, this author, this event, is one word in the subtitle of this marvelous book: Ireland. Whether you are as Irish as the characters described within "I'll Know it When I See It," or have a last name that sounds more like...Raucher...for instance, the word Ireland still conjures up a multitude of images, of the place itself, its long, difficult and complex history, and how it is also interwoven with the myths and tales of this country. And many of those images have little connection to any reality about the place; but, nevertheless...the romantic image of Ireland persists.
But "I'll Know it When I See It" is not a soft clover travel guide; for one, we spend as much time in Astoria, Queens and on 55th Street right here in Manhattan as we do in County Cork. The events that take place not five miles from the spot where this reading takes place are as indelibly recalled, and as potent for our narrator, as any that take place across the Atlantic, on that verdant island.
But, to this reader at least, the key word in the title is not Ireland; it is something even deeper and more universal: Home.
In this moving yet remarkably unsentimental book, Alice Carey makes it clear that no one finds "home" without a cost, a reckoning of what is lost. Whether it is letting go of--leaving--what one thought was their "home," or coming to terms with simply letting go of what other people expect you to accept as your place in the world, "I'll Know it When I See It" tells a powerful and entrancing tale. One that, because of Alice Carey's expert hand and ear for the beauty and power of language, her ability to make her words come alive on the page, takes us right into the places she, her family and dear friends inhabit, or even only visit.
An Easy and Pleasant Read.......2005-12-19
A friend, whom I accompanied on my first trip to Ireland last May, lent me Alice Carey's memoir "I'll Know It When I See It," knowing how enamored I have become of things Irish. Alice Carey, as a clever and witty story teller, has a natural knack for sizing up situtations and characterizing people that seems to be an Irish trait. Having lived for a while in NYC, I was amused by her reflections on the city, its rapid neighborhood changes, and at the same time dismayed at the stringent life she endured in Queens as a youngster, made especially difficult by a father whose abusive anger was probably rooted in the frustration of economic and social deprivation in a city where extreme wealth so clearly co-exists with poverty.
Alice's salvation resides in her mother, "mammie," whom she adored and who adored her. By the author's literary skill, mammie comes alive and endearing. One example is the episode where she and her mother attended the Broadway opening of "Peter Pan" starring Mary Martin, -a tale told with vivid detail. In her account of her ambivalent search for her roots in Ireland, I very much appreciated the account of her and her husband's finding and rehabilitating the Protestant mansion and rescuing the Catholic cottage from the cows near Bantry where they settled before tackling the manor house. That tale of renovation and acclimation would be a fitting sequel. Perhaps Alice Carey will treat us to that tale. A delicious read that ended all too soon.
Returning to Irish Roots.......2005-03-14
There's something about restoring a house that makes people want to write a book. Perhaps it's the epic nature of their undertaking and the growth they experience in the process. In this account, the house is in Ireland and the restorers are New Yorkers (with Irish roots). Pleasant enough reading, but nothing super-special about it.
The book includes tidbits about Broadway celebs, Fire Island and AIDs, and slight peeks into the Irish way of life.
Other books on home restoration or home building experiences that might interest you are Under the Tuscan Sun (Italy) or A Family Place (Nova Scotia). One I can't recommend is Turn Left at the Black Cow (Ireland).
Loved It!.......2002-12-30
What a wonderful, funny, enlightening book. Please Alice Carey - write me another one. My Irish mother would also like to read the next... Bravo!
A engaging read.... We want More...............2002-03-21
I found this book most enjoyable. It almost could of been
2 seperate books. Life on Broadway and Life on the Emerald Isle.
I would love Ms. Carey expand on both in future books....
A great read!!
