Book Description
When Eric Lavender, New York psychotherapist, meets the sexy, stylish Colleen O'Brien Golden, his bachelor life quickly loses its appeal. He moves to Scarsdale to join Colleen and finds a life of domestic bliss as a husband and father. But Eric's suburban oasis is soon threatened by a conflict of interest with his lawyer-wife and the disturbing evidence of her hidden past. Eric must uncover the truth or lose everything that matters to him, including his own freedom. As she did in her bestseller Almost, Elizabeth Benedict navigates the turbulent waters of love, power, and vengeance with biting wit and penetrating insight. The Practice of Deceit is a razor-sharp novel of marriage and divorce gone awry.

Drawing a Bead on the Professional Class.......2007-09-05
Elizabeth Benedict is one savvy observer of upper middle class contemporary life. She writes about the early 21st century the way Judith Rossner and Susan Isaacs wrote about the 1970s and 80s. I couldn't put this book down, not just because the plot pulls you forward, but because the characters-- from the two little girls to their Philippina nanny to psychotherapist Eric Lavender, his befuddled clients, and his lesbian surgeon sister Pru-- are drawn so finely.
It's a great send-up of the matrimonial bar. Not every lawyer has the stomach to deal with divorce, but if you've ever participated in the process, you know that some attorneys, like Eric's wife Colleen O'Brien Golden, are drawn to the drama. Benedict's portrayal of psychotherapy is more sympathetic than her portrayal of the law, but once again, if you know therapists, you know that often their brilliant insight does not necessarily extend to their own circumstances.
What sets Benedict apart from the ordinary writers of suspense are her powers of acute observation; there are no cliches here, only believeable people making human choices, sometimes wisely, sometimes not. By the time I finished, I was wondering how the children were faring after such an incredible ordeal. I hope they're well.
Page-turner -- Psychological Thriller.......2007-04-18
An exciting page-turner disguised as women's fiction. Psychotherapist Eric Lavender thinks his practice of bored Scarsdale housewives and personal life including two small children and a workaholic wife is boring, yet comfortable. Then his world falls apart as he's arrested for a horrific crime he didn't commit -- arreested at the hands of his once-devoted wife. As he digs deeper beneath her polished surface, everything Eric once held sacred begins to crumble.
Excellent writing, perfect for lovers of Harlan Coben and Jonathan Kellerman.
simply enjoyable.......2006-11-12
Great mystery! Turns at every corner. Excellent beach read. You'll enjoy this one!

Reviewer: lisatheratgirl "lisatheratgirl" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
If you'd like a good fiction story as well as a frighteningly accurate portrait of a true sociopath, read this book. The author is obviously familiar with this personality type and anyone who has ever had dealings with a sociopathic personality will recognize it in Colleen. The terms sociopath and psychopath are used pretty interchangeably, but this novel gives one an idea of the damage such a person can do to other people's lives. As the book points out, sociopaths are true con artists and pathological liars. Eric keeps saying as a therapist he should have known better, but sociopaths are expert at fooling therapists and everyone else. Another thing the author brings out is how vindictive a sociopath can get once someone opposes them or is "on" to them. These people are dangerous. There are surprisingly few good books available on this subject, it was great to find a work of fiction that is so realistic. A recent good nonfiction book I just read is The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout, for anyone interested in further reading. Unfortunately some of us are not doing this reading strictly out of intellectual curiosity. Benedict's book makes a good domestic thriller, highly recommended.
I'm in the minority here.......2006-03-02
But I viewed this book as entertaining, but not really valuable. Why focus on Colleen as the femme fatale when Eric was stupid enough to marry someone whom he didn't know? What happened to responsible adults, who actually take the time to *know* someone before they marry?
I disagree that there are really people who are "unknowable." If you're not willing to date for a year or two before you make a serious commitment, perhaps. Otherwise, not really.
It seems to me (and I have given bad reviews to a number of chick-lit books because of this) that the shelves of fiction these days are awfully crowded with tales of adults who act like irresponsible children. Getting married to someone you don't know, who has a child, after a very brief acquaintance is an example of this IMO, and for once it's the man, not the woman, who is deceived. But I don't like it regardless of gender.
I'm not saying it's not a good story. It is. And I understand there are people who are stupid enough to act like this. My problem is that the TSTL protagonist is so unbearably common that it's beyond cliche, and I've stopped seeing why I should care about people who appear to lack basic common sense. After seeing them over and over and over and over and over in books (Sophie Kinsella, anyone?)
One romance writer, whose name I wish I could remember, wrote an essay advising other writers on how to write a good romance. She said to make sure your protagonists have known each other for a reasonable amount of time. She said that three days is not a long enough time, and neither is three months. She might as well have been shouting into the wind for all the good it seems her advice did, unfortunately.
This author is clearly very talented, and I'd love to see her apply her talents to something a bit (IMO) less cliched next time.

Novelization of a Legend.......2000-05-27
The strangest thing about this fantasy trilogy is that it is not a new story. It is both a retelling of an Irish folk legend and a modern fantasy trilogy, and it succeeds admirably as both. This series will appeal to Celtophiles and fantasy buffs everywhere, as well as those who simply enjoy a good story whatever the genre. The Gaelic names and place spellings lend it a taste of authenticity that may be deceptive, but enhance the cultural feel of the story.
This first book covers the childhood and coming of age of Fionn Mac Cumhal (Demne Mael as he is called in his childhood), the Irish hero and sage of legend. Fans of Ender's Game or other Orson Scott Card books will likely enjoy the saga of this boy, destined for greatness, finding his identity and coming into the legacy left by his parents. Card seems to excel in this sort of story, and this pair of authors do it quite well in this book.
The authors bravely struggle to fit into the story all the events that are attributed to Fionn in his lifetime, which sometimes happens at the cost of the fluidity of the story. This is rare, though, and for the most part, the story flows smoothly and interestingly. Where most folklore is told in a dry academic style, this telling is more immersed in the style of modern fiction, which is a very refreshing change. There should be more of its kind in the world.
Instead of a new story, the authors tell a good story and at the same time educate the reader in Irish folklore. A good series, and a fantastic legend retold in fascinating style. A good book if you can find it.

Book Description
Friendship, even for the most able, requires hard work, and the odds are heavily stacked against those with autism spectrum disorders. Designed for younger children, typically between the ages of two and eight, this comprehensive set of activities emphasizes foundation skills such as social referencing, regulating behavior, conversational reciprocity and synchronized actions. The authors include over 300 objectives to plan and evaluate a child's progress, each one related to a specific exercise. Suitable for parental use, the manual is also designed for easy implementation in schools and in therapeutic settings. A comprehensive website acts as companion to the book, free to purchasers.
Customer Reviews:
Fun as well as therapeutic.......2007-10-10
My son and I love the games in this book, and we often end up in fits of laughter.
I also love RDI because it doesn't feel like therapy - it just feels like playing! The games are light and non invasive, and don't involve analytical thinking or psychology etc. This is perfect for my son as he tends to think too much about things. These games get right outside of linear thinking and work on relating.
Highly recommended!
Excellent book for parents and clinicians of ASD youth.......2007-03-11
The title of thie book is a little misleading, as the book is not really a downward age-extension of Gutstein's other RDI book but an expansion of exercises useful for the first 3 stages of RDI. Therefore, it is THE book for most parents of children with ASD, as usually these are the stages you end up starting with/on when doing the RDI exercises with your child. And, having more than double the options for the exercises is very helpful. I strongly recommend this book.
Intro to RDI.......2007-02-22
This book gives excellent advice to parents on ways for parents to help their autistic child develop socially. The principles are laid out clearly and activity descriptions are easy to follow. Unfortunately, for us, the beginner activities are nearly all too difficult for my child. As the book makes the objectives for each activity clear, parents can, if necessary, invent easier activities to meet them. I would recommend it but I understand the authors no longer do, saying that RDI has moved on since its publication and that the book no longer represents what RDI is about.
Excellent (Full of Activities).......2005-10-30
Great for preschoolers with autism who are low to high functioning. You will come away with a least 5 new play activites here that will always work.
After reading so much, finally what I needed.......2004-11-07
As a mother of two, I like to help my kids, in everyway posible, to grow up as wholesome happy persons. I have a 3 year old who at home is a normal kid, but at school, parties or just anywhere else she won't speak and is in a constant state of panic and anxiety. I have read so many books on anxiety and other related pathologies without finding a real way to help her. This wonderful program RDI has helped my daughter in an incredible way! She is now a happier child, communicates more with all her family and extended family. And she is starting to make friends and interact with other children and adults just like any other kid. I am also using the program with my older daughter to help her in the building of her friendships. This book is not just for autistic kids.

Yummy.......2002-06-05
I got this cookbook as a gift, and so far the recipes have been easy to follow! My family loves the Banana Nut Bread on page 58 any time of the day. I was afraid the recipes would all be too spicy, but they were yummy! I am going out to buy River Roads Recipes III this week.
Easy to Prepare Meals.......2001-09-17
When I say that this cookbook is one of my favorites, topped only by Talk About Good, that is saying a lot. I have found myself pulling this off of my mother's shelves after she has 'borrowed it'.
When I got this as a gift from my Sister In Law, I didn't know what a treat I was in for. Thank you!
The recipes are fairly easy to prepare and the results turn out great meals.
My only issue with any cajun cooking is that it sometimes calls for those Louisiana type of ingredients that are hard to get anywhere else but Louisiana (tasso for example!)
Great At Home Cooking!.......2000-11-22
This book has become a staple for my at home daily cooking. The Breakfast Casserole and the Lemon Squares are particularly good. This cookbook will serve as an outstanding guide for anyone who is intersted in adding the delicious flavor of Louisiana cuisine to their everyday meals!
River Road, A Second Helping.......2000-05-26
Having lived in New Orleans for 8 years, I acquired a taste for the unbelievable food there. In 1988, I moved away and some of the most important items to pack were my copies of the River Road cookbooks. I have just discovered my son has "borrowed" my Second Helping cookbook only to inform me it is his now. I now find myself having to reorder it as it contains so many easy to prepare and outstanding recipes. Congratulations to your contributors for a job well done.

Basics for those new to the breed.......2000-08-04
I purchased this book because it was written by the breeder of my Brittany. The book covers the basics, from where the breed began to how to pick a puppy. I think it is a must read for those thinking of purchasing a Brittany. They are not the breed for everyone and the book addresses the ins and outs of the Brittany personality.

It's all true!.......2007-05-13
I was amazed to discover that the techniques in this book actually work! As someone with some mobility issues, gardening has always been an ambivalent activity. I love to garden, but the activity itself is painful. This book provides a relatively pain free solution (for me, anyway)!
In addition to the gardening method, the book also gives you specific tips for successfully growing a large number of fruits, veggies, flowers, herbs, bramble fruits, and more.
This is the easiest way to garden - and do it organically - that I've ever heard of. Hooray for Patricia Lanza! I'll be Lasagna Gardening for as long as I continue to garden. Buy the book!!! You won't regret it.
Lasagna Gardening.......2007-05-12
I, for one, am going to do the Lasagna Gardening way this year. I can't wait. It makes so much sense to garden this way. I am so glad that this book came my way because I am rather new to gardening and lazy, I must add because I really don't care to bend over to weed the garden.
This should be my new way from now on.
Lasagna Gardening.......2007-01-09
Ordered this book as a gift because the receiver truly enjoyed reading our copy. Excellent.
All-Around Organic Gardening Book.......2006-11-12
This book is an all-around gardening reference. It follows organic methods to ensure safe production of vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and covers a wide range of gardening topics, with information about growing vegetables, herbs, berries, flowers, fall and winter gardening, pest control, and garden design. The chapters include detailed sections describing growth habits and techniques for specific plants, arranged alphabetically, as well as summary tables for quick reference noting hardiness zones, the size of plants, and tips.
So what is lasagna gardening? It is a gardening method that Lanza developed that involves layering growing media in beds in such a way that there is a continuous supply of nutrients and organic matter for the plants. This unique layering method eliminates the need for rototilling or digging, while minimizing weeds. One example of layering that Lanza describes is to start by putting a layer of newspaper directly on undisturbed sod or lawn, followed by a layer of peat moss, some barn litter, more peat moss, some compost, more peat moss, grass clippings, more peat moss, chopped leaves, more peat moss, and wood ashes. This material is then allowed to sit for a few months for the layers to decompose, creating a rich, light, mostly weed free soil; covered with black plastic to raise the temperature, the garden bed may be ready for planting in as little as six weeks. The actual components of the layers will be determined by what is readily available in the neighborhood. Lanza provides suggestions for what materials work well in her system, as well as some suggestions for how they can be obtained at little or no cost.
While her lasagna method certainly sounds as if it would work well, the book goes far beyond explaining just this method, and provides answers to many general gardening questions that have little relation to lasagna gardening (such as rock gardening). In seeking to be complete, a few of her descriptions sound a little far-fetched, as if she were relying on others' experience or simply guessing (such as when she suggests that one can tell if elderberries are ripe by taste-testing for sweetness--has she ever tasted an elderberry straight off the bush?). Nevertheless, the layer approach sounds promising as well as easy and organic, and the reference lists of plants are very useful for garden planning.
I read it-I did it-It works!.......2006-10-16
It's a great idea, one that saved me backbreaking work on getting new garden beds established in a very short time. I wish I had heard of this book years before.
The hardest part is lugging home the bags and bags of soil needed. But at least I avoided the digging that breaks nails, backs and spirit. Plus I can start out with organic soil in the first place.

Product Description
This book investigates the problem of esoteric traditions in early Christianity, their origin and their transformation in Patristic hermeneutics, in the West as well as in the East. It argues that these traditions eventually formed the basis of nascent Christian mysticism in Late Antiquity. These esoteric traditions do not reflect the influence of Greek Mystery religions, as has often been claimed, but rather seem to stem from the Jewish background of Christianity. They were adopted by various Gnostic teachings, a fact which helps explaining their eventual disappearance from Patristic literature. The eleven chapters study each a different aspect of the problem, including the questions of Gnostic and Manichaean esotericism. This book will be of interest to all students of religious history in Late Antiquity.

Thinking Print-expansive thinking /curating by MOMA's Wye.......2002-01-13
"Thinking Print: books to billboards..." was a groundbreaking late 20th c. exhibition curated by Deborah Wye, a most thorough and original cultural /art historian. Wye is a curator with a fantasitc eye and an obsession for producing exhibitions and catalogs which explore their subject in-depth. In this particular instance, Wye is re-examining definitions and boundaries for the print medium in a manner that had yet to be accomplished. Her passion and scholarship regarding print, as a medium of expression and a medium for dissemination permates the pages. This catalog is a must have for libraries, as well as any serious artist, scholar or collector interested in printmaking from traditional to groundbreaking--from ink and paper to pixels.

Book Description
Although women writers have held a conspicuous place in the history of modern Russian literature, they have been slow to find their true voices in exile. Ludmila Shtern, a geologist/writer who emigrated to the US from the Soviet Union in 1975, offers a completely fresh, unsentimental look at daily life in the former Soviet Union and the US in the second half of the 20th century. Her memoir, part comic bildungsroman, part picaresque adventure, shows its heroine, Tatyana Dargis, growing up in the USSR, falling in love, falling afoul of the KGB, and finally emigrating to the US where new absurdities (capitalist rather than communist in nature) prevail.
An amalgam of bittersweet understatement and mordant wit, Shtern's prose is shaped by her ear for a wide range of human voices and the stories they tell, and by her eye for the grotesqueries and savagely funny pain of modern life. The late Joseph Brodsky, hailing Shtern as "an accomplished stylist" and "a talented humorist," said, "Ms. Shtern has a sharp eye for the telling details of contemporary Russian life . . . The light touch of her satire and her sustained wit are impressive and a pleasure to read."
Whether running the bureaucratic obstacle course required for permission to visit Paris or buying a car she can't afford simply because her number came up on a waiting list; whether coping with the intrigues of neighbors in an overcrowded Leningrad apartment or enduring that quintessentially American experience, a self-actualization workshop, Shtern maintains a cheerful sense of irony (even when most depressed) and offers through her personal transit from one life to the next, a tight, witty social history of the two world powers at the end of the Cold War.
Customer Reviews:
mildly humorous.......2007-03-10
This was neither a great or terrible book. The author deals with the oppressions of living under the Soviet regime light-heartedly. This is a new angle compared to other books I have read on the subject. It is not particularly well written. I had to go back and reread certain parts to figure out what she was talking about. Also, I thought I was buying a book on a Jewish topic, and in fact the author is not Jewish, her husband is.
Entertaining Vignettes of Soviet and American Life.......2001-10-22
I enjoyed this book greatly. Not so much an autobiography as a series of vignettes, Leaving Leningrad is very easy and entertaining reading. The witty personality of the author shines through every page so that by the end of the book you feel you know her well. You also feel you have seen what it must have been like to live in the Soviet Union in the 60's and 70's - not from the commonly available perspective of an academic or a dissident, but from the point of view of the ordinary everyday working stiff. That's what makes the book not only light and fun, but also enlightening. Read it in an evening (that's all it takes) and I'm sure you'll be glad you did. I was.
