Book Description
The New York Times bestselling fifth novel in the Elm Creek Quilt series
Resolving to locate her mother's heirloom quilts after so many years, Sylvia Compson embarks on a cross-country investigation of antique shops, quilt museums, and other, more unexpected places, where offers of assistance are not always what they seem. And as Sylvia recovers some of the missing quilts and accepts others as lost forever, she reflects on the woman her mother was and mourns the woman she never knew.
With heartfelt honesty, The Quilter's Legacy reveals the tenuous connections that bind generations and celebrates the love that sustains them.

quilters legacy.......2007-06-17
I , as a quilter, do enjoy this series. Runaway quilt has been my favorite so far but love to follow the characters.
The Quilter's Legacy.......2006-11-06
This book was really good. Not only am I interested in quilts, but also genealogy and this had a touch of that too! Very good book.
OOPS!.......2006-11-03
Content of the book was good- however, some of the language of all this series could have been improved. It ISN'T necessary to have swearing in order to write a book! I enjoyed all except for that!

Riveting.......2006-09-01
I flew through this book just like the previous 4 in the series. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
Excellent.......2006-07-09
There are two plots to this story: Sylvia Compson's search for her mother's quilts, which Sylvia's sister had sold; and the story of Eleanor, Sylvia's mother.
It needs to be remembered that the audience gets to learn about Eleanor, but Sylvia is not reading a journal by her mother, or in any way learning what we as the readers now know about her mother's life. Some of it Sylvia is able to piece together in the book, but the majority of it, only we as the readers know.
It gives us insight and understanding that Sylvia does not have. It also gave me more understanding of the rift between Sylvia and her sister Claudia.
I think this was a very good writing device. One thing I've noticed about Chiaverini's writing is that she is not afraid to introduce new characters, or change our opinions, even slightly, about existing and continuing characters. She is not afraid to let some characters move on, as they would in real life. For me, that is what makes these books so interesting, so valid and so real. People move on. People change careers, divorce, marry, move away, try new things, and sometimes stay in the same job and the same area. It's life. I think Chiaverini's books mirror life.
The hunt for the quilts was painful in a way for me. My own family has been searching for family quilts that disappeared during the funeral of my great-grandmother. I think this is a very truthful portrayal of how disheartening it is, too, to work so hard on any needlework craft, including quilting, and those who don't appreciate or understand the enormous amount of time, patience, creativiity, and work that goes into it, just letting the dog lie on it, or giving it away, or selling it. Yep, I've seen all of those in real life happen and it breaks the heart. It also makes me decide nope, I am not giving that person any more of my needlework. Too bad for them.
The adult children of Andrew seemed like an accurate and possible portrayal to me. I'm sorry to say it, but weddings and funerals bring out the worst at times in a saint. I've seen people who are normally rational, kind-hearted, dear people go into anger and say and do things that are shocking. You realize that you didn't really know that person after all. For those who say the reaction of the adult children was not creditable, I can only say that for me, it sure was. I've seen really decent, kind people who go to church and do the right things in life and are law-abiding citizens do and say some really crazy, out-of-character, nutty things when it comes to marriage or funerals or more to the point, who is getting what in a will. If you haven't experienced it, my bet is that someday, unfortunately, you'll find that you will. "It'll never happen in MY family!" are famous last words.
And that's what this book is, and what all of Chiaverini's books are for me: honest. Honesty doesn't mean a perfectly happy ending. If it was perfectly happy, all of the quilts would never have been sold in the first place, or if they had been, all of them would have been found and in pristine condition.
I really enjoyed this book.

whatever.......2007-10-10
This book is not very helpful. The information, once it has been learned---ELSEWHERE--or, far away, long ago, on a distant planet---I can't imagine anyone needing this kind of help to do these conversions.
Diabetic Exchanges.......2007-04-13
Everyone should have one of these. Especially those new to the diabetic lifestyle. Packed with information and helps one make sensible food choices to keep blood sugar in check.
Pocket sized companion.......2007-03-31
A handy pocket sized companion for Type 2 diabetics who want to know more about portion sizes and food equivalents and exchanges.
Great for exchange use only........2007-03-23
This little booklet is great for those who are going to track diabetic exchanges, and it gives you a good idea of typical/appropriate portion sizes. But unless you're really going to track exchanges (I use a different method), skip it. No frills, but does the one job well.
Diabetic Help .......2007-01-04
I purchased this picket guide right after being diagnosed with Type 2 and it has been the best thing I could have done. Because of its size, I keep it with me all the time and constantly check it when trying to make food decisions. Don't know what I would do without it.
Customer Reviews:
Timeless.......2006-07-30
I bought this book over 20 years ago, when my best friend became a vegetarian and I wanted to cook meals that we could share. I have 3 of Mollie's books; starting with the Enchanted Brocoli Forest (which to me, is the best) I bought this one after I had run through almost all of Brocoli Forest, and loved the recipes there. Still life is a bit more refined, as she lays out menus; paints a picture, or landscape with food. I have, over the years bought many other vegetarian cookbooks, but this book, along with the other two mentioned above, are classics, and present meals easy to prepare and ones which almost all meat-eaters find equally appealing. I high recommend this book for anyone just starting out on the vegetarian way of life, as well as for established vegetarians, or those who want to eat in a more healthy way. This is a very practical cookbook.
best book ever.......2006-05-31
make everything-- especially the ginger snaps and chocolate chip mint cookies. worth every penny. nice art too!
Hit or Miss?.......2004-09-19
My mother-in-law gave me this cookbook and I was anxious to try out some of the recipes to show my appreciation for the gift. However, many of the recipes seem overly exotic to me - and I am used to a wide variety of international cuisines. It seems to me that perhaps the author has sacrificed authenticity on the altar of innovation. I most recently attempted the banana cheese empanadas, despite my initial misgivings at the absence of fat in the dough. This is the first time I've seen a recipe for empanadas in which the dough consists of only flour and water. Needless to say, it was tough and flavourless. I have not had much more luck with the other recipes I tried, either. What I find especially irritating is the author's decision not to include photographs of finished dishes or diagrams of cooking techniques, but to showcase her own original, and completely irrelevant, artwork.
Looking for something different to cook tonight?.......2002-04-02
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I'm a bit of a cookbook addict and tend to buy lots of them, then when I realize I never actually COOK anything out of a book, I get rid of it. This one, on the other hand, is off the shelf nearly every week, it's ripped, it's dirty, it has lots of food stains on it because I use it so often.
Some of the recipes are true breathtakers. The Thai appetizer is amazing. And the seeded tomato soup. Lots and lots of yummy things here. She has a whole section on "quick and easy." And I can always find something that I have the ingredients on hand for.
Mollie writes great introductions to the recipes, so you always know what you're getting into with each one.
An excellent gourmet vegetarian cookbook.......2001-06-12
Just shy of 400 pages this is a gem of a cook book. What I appreciate about the book is it is laid out as meals. Of course you can make one item or all or mix and match and combine with family favorites you already have.
On page 17 the author has a "How To Use This Book" section where she reminds the reader that sometimes it is when we do not follow a recipe so closely that we learn to love cooking.
Now I will probably sound a tad snobbish so forgive me , but I think this is a cookbook that will appeal to people who are well traveled, very curious about food, willing to try new things and probably educated and upscale. I say this because the person who likes what is called "All American" meat and potato and high fat and unhealthy food will probably be lost here.
We live in California where we have a year round bounty of the best fruits and vegetables so this is an easy to use book as far as ingredients go. And we loved the Roasted Red Peppers with Garlic and Lime on page 56, the Strawberry Meringue Pie on page 85 the Chinese Vegetable Soup on page 89 the Greek Stuffed Eggplant with Bechamel Sauce on page 151 the Southwest Salad with Black Beans and Corn on page 178 the Yellow Split Pea Dal on page 191 oh and the Spinach Roll Ups with Lime Chutney. We love Indian food!!
My husband would live in Tuscany if he had his way I would choose the south east area of rural France, so he loved the Linguine with Quick Tuscan Tomato Sauce on page 239 and the Pasta with Marinated Vegetables like roasted peppers, artichoke hearts tomato mushroom and olives. Not canned olives but the luscious oil cured type you find in Italy and Greece.
On page 331 she has Week-Long Menu Planning Guide where she lays out everything you will need to aquaria as well as some encouraging words about how to combine and end up with great leftovers. And like all her wonderful books she did all the paintings. The recipes are easy to follow as well.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful book around the stable.......2006-05-17
I speak, read, and write fluent Spanish, however, some of the horse related specialty words I only know in German and English, so this book comes in extremely handy when communicating with hispanic help around the stables or on buying trips and shows in Spanish speaking countries.
Not Racist--Necessary.......2004-09-20
Anyone who has horses and runs a barn and employs Mexican laborer, helpers, whatever terminology you want...NEEDS THIS BOOK. This book is great, it not only makes communication possible about every deal of horses and equipment, it gives confidence to the Mexican workers, which in turn gives them encouragement to learn more English, and to communicate more. They live in our country invisibly mostly, many are illegalls with forged documents, and they live in fear, lonley, and top that off with not being able to communicate, their lives are very sad and sometimes desperate.Desperate people do desperate things. To facilitate the simple act of communicating can forge strong bonds, friendships, loyalty and honesty. I credit Belknap's book with doing just this with 3 Mexcian men who have worked for me and.I went from the American gringa to the American amiga, and suddenly tools, eqipment and etc., stopped "disappearing" from my barn, and the work improved greatly because the men felt repsected and had the self-confidence to ask for what they needed, and upon learning, their self-confident went way up and the barn is a much happier place. I would recommend this book to everyone who has Spanish-speaking help in barns and stables, and this is why I'm now ordering more copies! This book is definitely not racist...I think the reviewer who accused Belknap of being racist is loco.
Necessary!.......2001-05-07
Two new workers at my barn are Mexican. One speaks a little English and the other speaks none. Most of the other workers and boarders only speak English and those that speak Spanish (like me) only speak a little bit. I bought this book and brought it to the barn. Within five minutes the Mexican workers tried to buy it off me - so I am ordering them two more. That's why this book gets five stars from me, it is just a helpful thing to have around and can help you avoid miscommunications.
Ummm... a little racist........2000-09-23
Althought the spanish translation is accurate, I found the voice this book is written in to be somewhat disturbing. Ms. Belknap's views on "the help" are a little troubling. As much as I did need this book for my trip to Mexico for a riding excursion, I certainly would not need it for the asian & american "help" that our cooperative stable employs.
Horseman's English/Spanish Dictionary by Maria Belknap.......2000-08-25
If you have spanish speaking help at your barn and your spanish is non-existent or rusty, buy this book! It is well organized and concise. The illustrations, though small, are well done and helpful. Because this book pertains to horses and their care,it contains words and references you won't find in other dictionaries. Our barn aides are equally happy with this book. What a relief to be able to finally have needs and questions understood by both parties.Thank you Maria Belknap,my horse thanks you too.

A Nice History Book.......2003-09-21
When this book was written, Pokemon was the biggest thing on the planet. The book serves primarily as a history book in my opinion. The book is definitely "big" as the cover says. 300 pages!
There's full color images of the original 151 Pokemon with their stats. There images of the main characters and Bios. There's images of all the U.S. & Japanese Pokemon cards that existed back then. All the Burger King toys & cards are displayed. And there's Killer Decks for those that want to look back at the theory behind the Power decks.
If you or your kids are just getting into Pokemon, this will keep them entertained for hours. If you've been into Pokemon since 1998 ... then you'll have fun looking back on the good times. ;-)
Updated - "Make sure to pick up Pojo's Total Pokemon, as it picks up where this book left off, and was updated for 2004!"

This review is being typed on behalf of my 9 year old daughter! She says very informative and a great book for a Pokemon lover!
I'm a poke'maniac!.......2000-03-26
I think this is a very good book which gives you information about the trading card game and prices(the important things) the only thing which prevents it from getting 5 stars is that new sets are going to come out and this book won't be able to cover them all but it's the best book about the cards which are out there right now
the great pokemon book.......2000-03-26
I have many books that have old cards and not current info. but this book as I all all the all the cards ,I say this is the best pokemon price book ever!
Book Description

Is what it says, says what it is........2005-10-04
Just like the title for this review. No more, no less.
An excellent guide for all ages........2001-02-20
I am pleased to say that this excellent guide has brought much information about the incredibly popular Pokémon trading card game, and much knowledge about the Pokémon merchandise. Checkerbee Publishing has made a incredible value guide, considering that they included transalations for the Japanese poket monster trading card game, pictures of the cards, and such information is included in American Pokémon card game which is also featured in this book. Though this book has it's pros, it also has cons. No estimated prices are given about the American Fossil Cards, and few people are sure that the Japanese transalations are 100% accurate. Though, that should not stop you from buying this stupendous guide. I am very sure this will satisfy thous who are in need of Pokémon information.
Too Much MISPRINTS!.......2000-04-18
i bought this book because it looked cool. but i read some of it there was alot of misprints!
Really handy!.......2000-03-20
This book is a really good source if you want to know how much your pokemon cards are worth. This book has the values of rares, commons, and uncommons. And it even has the values of japanese cards. If you want to get a pokemon price guide, i suggest you buy this one.
Excellent.......2000-01-30
IF you can't under stand you japanies cards fear no more. This book tells you what it says.

Information you need? This book has it!.......2002-05-09
I liked this book because it was easy to find the cards I wanted to look at in a short amount of time. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the prices were alittle high on the easy to get cards and in outer space for the rares and holo's. I find that its a great book though for a quick price check when I am buying or trading cards. I wish they would publish a updated book with all the new cards in it.
Really Good Book.......2000-06-15
This book tells you how much all the cards are including the new kinds of Pokemon.

Book Description
Born a slave on a Virginia plantation, James Lindsay Smith endured a life of humiliation, and physical and psychological abuse of every sort. Originally published in 1881, this detailed narrative of Smith's long and eventful life is a stirring testament to his very survival under conditions of extreme hardship. Unlike the eloquent rhetoric of Fredrick Douglas, Smith's prose is simple and plainspoken.
Smith begins his narrative with stories of his various cruel masters, the many beatings, the heartless separations of family members, and his religious conversion. Trained as a shoemaker, he makes a daring escape to freedom, forging a new life for himself among the abolitionists in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He details life during the Civil War, racism among Union Soldiers, heroism of African American troops, reactions to the Emancipation Proclamation and the assassination of Lincoln, and the migration of emancipated slaves to the West. His autobiography concludes with a bittersweet visit to his old homestead in Virginia, celebrations over the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, and his hope for the future.
With a valuable introduction by Rosalyn Howard, author of BLACK SEMINOLES IN THE BAHAMAS, this is both a poignant and insightful look at a tumultuous America now gone, but one that still affects present-day race relations.
