Book Description
USA Today bestselling mystery maven Mary Daheim brings us another intriguing tale in her cherished Bed–and–Breakfast mystery series in which a trip down memory lane brings Judith and Renie back to their old neighbourhood, and they are drawn to a seemingly deserted house that is much more than meets the eye.
On a trip to Renie's old neighbourhood, the cousins' curiosity is piqued by a mysterious brick Tudor house that always looked deserted during Renie's junior high school days. Surprised that the house still looks abandoned after all these years, Judith and Renie, of course, cannot resist an opportunity to snoop around. They discover that Mr. and Mrs. Bland have lived in the house since 1947, and after cornering the mailman and milkman, Judith and Renie also learn that the Blands receive regular mail and food deliveries, but no one has ever seen the occupants who simply pay the bills with cash they leave in the milk box. Although intrigued by these strange, but definitely not sinister, occurrences, Judith is ready to focus her attention once more on her neglected husband Joe and the busy B&B business. Until one day Judith finds a dead body in the trunk of her car. And it's the Blands' milkman...

Humorous But Light Mystery.......2006-08-23
Renie Jones has been obsessed for years with a house near her childhood home and gets her cousin, Bed and Breakfast owner Judith McMonigle Flynn, to visit the house with her. Judith has solved a few mysteries in her past and senses one now: why are the owners, Dick and Jane Bland, never seen? Why isn't Sally, Jane's sister who also lives there, ever seen? Why is there a mysterious package delivered to the house the same time every year? Judith's curiosity causes her to become a murder suspect when a body turns up in her car trunk - a body directly related to the Bland house.
"This Old Souse" is a very humorous but loosely plotted mystery. It's as if Mary Daheim had the basic idea of a story involving mysterious occupants of a house, wasn't sure how to get Judith and Renie to the house plausibly, but liked the idea so much that she decided to go ahead and have fun with it. And fun she does have, starting with the improbable names of Dick, Jane, and Sally. She delights in creating over the top characters, some of which can be fun, but some are totally unbelievable like the incompetent mailman and insensitive receptionist at the vet's office. If you've never read a book in this series, Judith and Renie can be hard to take at first. Judith claims to be interested in people, but she often comes across as just being nosy and expects people to confide in her even if they've just met for the first time. Renie can be annoying too, pushing her way around. Gertrude, Judith's ancient mother, has been abrasive in past books, but Daheim tones her down quite a bit in this book.
Despite the awkward setup, the mystery itself has some nice moments, although about two thirds of the way into the book I figured out what was in the mysterious package left on the porch. Daheim does rely a bit too much on coincidence (Judith just happens to talk with the murder victim shortly before he is killed and his body is left in her car, which conveniently has a tricky trunk latch). But there are some really nice twists in the story that will keep the reader guessing who the murderer is.
"This Old Souse" is a good book for readers who like a nice, humorous, if light mystery.
Put this series out to pasture!.......2006-04-10
This series has been getting more pathetic for years now. In the beginning they were a fun read, but now are a sheer waste of paper.
Do people ever act like this?.......2005-12-12
This is the first book I have written by Ms. Daheim, so I may not know the characters well enough to understand why they would act like this. The fact that a woman would stake-out a house, interview the milkman (where are there milkmen anymore?), the mailman and the delivery man makes Judith sound demented. Then she parks her car and spies on the house from the bushes and is coincidently there when the package which arrives ONCE a year is delivered--WHAT? THEN she and her cousin go in and talk to one of the residents just because they want to--I couldn't take any more. I like more motivation for actions. I like SOME small amount of motivation other than, "I'm interested" before a heroine stalks and harrasses people.
The Absolute Pits.......2005-08-27
This series has been going downhill rapidly, but this one was the absolute pits.
Judith's excuse that she "likes people" has long been a lame excuse for getting her involved in murders and having people confide their deepest, darkest secrets out of the clear blue sky. But in this book, it just stretched the imagination too much.
Renie has been obsessed with a house since she was a child. Suddenly, 40 years later, she redevelops her obsession, mentions it to Judith, and brings her over to see the house. Next thing you know, Judith is showing up there on her own and gets involved in a murder mystery. She then proceeds to demand information on the murder from the cops, find lame excuses to show up at the house constantly, stalks the family members asking personal questions that are none of her business, and finally, breaks into the house in the middle of the night to satisfy her curiosity. And when all is said and done, the cops don't so much as arrest her on the breaking and entering charge, because she smiles warmly at them while telling her story.
As the series has continues to regress, so have the characters. Judith has always been an annoying, nosy buttinsky, but she's crossed the line to unbearable. Renie has gone from mildly humorous to downright idiotic. Gertrude, who used to be the best characters in the series, has become a cranky afterthought. At times, it almost seems like Mary Daheim is going for the slapstick of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plus/Lula/Grandma Mazur, only she's failing miserably. Even the secondary characters, such as Phyliss, Mike and the Rankers, have gone over the top to the point that the whole lot of them come off looking like morons.
It's time for Ms. Daheim to stick a fork in this series and concentrate on her Alpine series. While that one is also starting to go downhill the longer it goes on, it's still better than the garbage this series has become.
Not as good as previous books in series.......2005-03-03
I have read all of the previous entries in the Bed & Breakfast series and enjoyed them. This one I find has too many things that really wouldn't happen. I'm a few years younger than Judith and Renie and would never consider breaking into a house for any reason. There are just too many situations in this book that are unrealistic or rely too much on coincidences. Judith drives past a store and stops to buy flowers and the grocery order for the Blands just happens to be there waiting to be delivered. Too many situations like that make the book rather tiresome. Also at one point Sweetums, the cat, is brought to the vet after biting a guest at the B&B and the vet determines the cat does not have rabies. Now the only way to determine rabies, unless Sweetums had a rabies tag, is to actually kill the cat. So that was a little unbelieveable to anyone who actually has pets. I read the whole book because I did want to unravel the mystery of the Bland family, but don't think it is up to Mary Daheim's previous books.

Book Description
The Kingdom of Enchantment, a roadside theme park that flourished in the 1950s, has sat abandoned for decades. When a mysterious invitation literally drops into Kildare's lap, she is lead to a remarkable discovery - a genuine magical kingdom hidden away in the Catskill Mountains. But a dark and terrible secret lies buried at the heart of this fairytale land, a reminder of the dangers of getting what you wish for.

Almost up there.......2005-05-10
This book brings together all the pieces that can make a very good comic. The story starts in a world as real as yours or mine, then moves to a faerie land inhabited by Oberon, Tatiana, Mab, and a Green Man (but maybe not The Green Man). The art carries the story, and it builds up towards its own mythos. Somehow, though, it never makes the most of its many materials.
The artwork is certainly competent, despite a few jarring notes. Perhaps the willowy, long-legged look was meant to suggest a finer kind of world, but was somewhat irregular and somewhat at odds with the ladies' fulsome upper body. Even the "Aria Pin-up" shows several different kinds of bust, but shows them all in one figure.
The story calls on many pieces of traditional mythology, as does Promethea. It's a great vehicle for creating a kind of continuity, even from the first page of the first chapter. This book, however, just calls down the names of the mythic figures without ever really invoking the whole of the myth. At the same time, it creates some new characters with intense potential - Ember, and the formal name of The Beast ("Type IV ..."), with some relationship between these riveting figures. The story never pursues these characters to their potential, and, esp. with Ember, never pursues them back to their origins. OK, I grant that The Beast's origin may exceed the yuk threshold of this book, but The Beast has huge, visceral, and untapped power.
Although I liked Aria, I came away frustrated. The art is good, but could have been more. The traditional characters could have been more, and the new characters could have been more. There's a lot to like here, but everything could have been more.

In Eating Well for Optimum Health, one of Amazon's bestselling health books of 2000, alternative-medicine maverick Andrew Weil revealed his version of the ideal diet (and backed it up with scientific proof): a variety of unprocessed, or "whole" foods; just-picked, organic vegetables; whole grains; "good" fats, such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and nuts; fresh herbs and spices instead of heavy sauces; and a minimum of meat and dairy products. Eating this responsibly is certainly an admirable pursuit, but home cooking of this caliber can be intimidating, requiring much more energy than it would to pull up to the drive-through and order a burger and fries. In The Healthy Kitchen, Weil successfully teams up with Rosie Daley, formerly chef at the ritzy Cal-a-Vie Spa, to show how to cook with confidence within these dietary guidelines, creating dishes that are not only good for you, but are also fun to prepare, beautiful to look at, and delectable.
For those of you predicting a tofu-fest, have no fear: Weil stresses he's "unwilling to eat food that is boring, artless, and devoid of pleasure even if it's somebody else's idea of healthful." Indeed, the gorgeous color photography in The Healthy Kitchen will get you drooling over healthy entrées like Warm Chicken and Asparagus Salad and desserts like Lemon Yogurt Sorbet. You can be proud to serve these recipes to your family and friends--many of the appetizers and entrées are perfect party foods, sized to feed a dozen. Some recipes are notably more complicated than others--Cold Vegetable Pasta Primavera involves grilling five different veggies; baked Vegetable Wontons are time-consuming if you're not familiar with the folding process. However, Daley and Weil advise working your way up to these more complex dishes.
Sprinkled throughout the book are witty and wise health tips from Weil and cooking shortcuts from Daley. The two admit they don't agree on all cooking matters; Weil would substitute cashew milk for coconut milk and adds his two cents on making the Thai Shrimp and Papaya Salad spicier, for example. The Healthy Kitchen seems to be influenced a bit by Martha Stewart's Healthy Quick Cook, with Weil's text shaded in that unmistakably Martha sage-green, and Daley's in what Stewart might call bisque. Both books emphasize seasonal fresh foods and boast sumptuous photography and tempting menu suggestions. However, Weil and Daley outdo her with calorie and nutritional breakdowns for each dish, shopping guides for easy meal planning, and tips on encouraging children to help out in the kitchen (and develop lifelong healthy eating habits in the process). --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Two of America’s most popular authorities on healthy eating and cooking join forces in this inspiring, easy-to-use cookbook. This is not a diet book. It is a lively guide to healthy cooking, day-by-day, packed with essential information and, above all, filled with enticing food.
Andrew Weil, M.D.—author of the best-selling
Eating Well for Optimum Health—brings to this perfect collaboration a comprehensive philosophy of nutrition grounded in science. Rosie Daley—acclaimed for her best-seller,
In the Kitchen with Rosie—brings to it her innovative and highly flavorful spa cuisine.
The recipes are eclectic, drawing from the healthy and delicious cooking of the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Asia, among other cuisines. For starters, you might try Grilled Satay or a Miso Pâté; for soup, often a meal in itself, a hearty Mixed-Bean Minestrone Stew or a Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup with Cilantro Walnut Pesto; a special entrée could be the Savory Roasted Cornish Hens with Roasted Garlic or Baked Spicy Tofu with Bean Thread Noodles, Corn, and Mango; for a simple supper, Turkey Burgers or Portobello Burgers; and for the occasional indulgence, a dessert of Almond Fruit Tart or Peach and Blueberry Cobbler.
Andy and Rosie do not always agree. When Rosie calls for chicken, Andy offers a tofu alternative; she likes the flavor of coconut milk, whereas he prefers ground nut milk; when she makes a pastry with butter, he suggests using Spectrum Spread. There are no hard-and-fast rules.
Lifelong health begins in the kitchen, so this is a lifestyle book as well as a cookbook. In it you will learn from Dr. Weil:
• how to make use of nutritional information in everyday cooking
• what is organic . . . and how to buy organic foods
• the importance of reading labels and what to look for
• sensible advice about eggs, milk, cheese, salt, spicy foods, wine, coffee
• the facts about sugar and artificial sweeteners
. . . and from Rosie:
• how to get kids involved—from skinning almonds to layering lasagna
• ways to have fun in the kitchen—creating scallion firecrackers and radish rosettes
• low-fat and nondairy alternatives for those with special concerns
• smart menu planning—letting the seasons be your guide
. . . and lots more.
This revolutionary book will change forever the way you cook for yourself and your family.
With 58 photographs in full color.

I use this cookbook at least once a week.......2007-08-17
I bought this cookbook 8 months ago so I could make a cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday that she could eat--she has been off dairy and wheat since her first birthday. From chocolate cupcakes to zucchini bread, every recipe is delicious and "real" enough to serve to friends and family. Our favorites are the blueberry muffins, zucchini bread, coffee cake and the almond butter and chocolate chip cookies that are AMAZING! My daughter loves every recipe we have tried, and I feel great knowing that she is eating such healthy food. So far everything freezes really well, too.
I love the fact that this is wheat free, not gluten free. If you don't have to worry about avoiding gluten...you have a lot more tasty options. And this cookbook has plenty of examples. The authors also do not use white sugar and you don't miss it at all. They do a great job with easy recipes for moist, yummy baked goods. I no longer eat white sugar, wheat or dairy so we are relying on this cookbook even more now.
The cornbread recipe has a typo that I noticed way too late--tablespoons instead of teaspoons for baking soda and baking powder.
YUMMY!.......2007-08-09
This book has some of the most amazing vegan cookie recipes i've ever tried. Although i am not a vegan, i am unable to eat dairy or eggs. All of the cookies i've made with these recipes have been delicious and actually taste like they're made with butter. The cakes, breads and muffins are moist, and healthful without tasting like sawdust! For anyone on a restricted diet, i would definitely recommend this book! Most of the ingredients are easy to find, especially if you have access to a health food store. The recipes are simple, consistent, and satisfying.
A needed book.......2007-05-26
This book is just what I needed. I can't eat wheat right now because it bothers my nursing son. Finding wheat free, vegan recipes for sweets that taste good was proving to be a daunting task. I was really missing dessert until I found this book. True, it's not gluten-free, but I didn't get the impression it would be. I was able to look through the book a bit on amazon and knew what was used in the recipes.(Thanks amazon) There are people who can't have wheat but have no problems with other gluten containing grains and for them, this book is great. The cookie recipes are amazing. The recipes that call for more barley flour like cakes, muffins and quick breads are a bit health-foody. But we like that. My four year old devours the rapberry muffins like they are going out of style. The gingerbread cookies have also become a favorite around here. I really love having recipes for treats that I can feel good about giving to my kids. It doesn't hurt that us grownups love them too. Thanks Ellen Abraham, for filling the void.
Perfect to read, enjoy, understand, laugh!.......2007-04-06
This little book is packed with inspiring ideas, taking "eating healthy" totally into consideration. These two girls who wrote the book are inspirational to me, an omnivore, to eat more healthy and still enjoy these better choices in desserts. It is a perfectly presented manual and guide to vegan eating and the recipes are truly works of art and a labor of love.
simply delicious.......2007-02-18
I just baked the banana bread with gluten-free flour.... it is great. I think if gluten-allergic people substitute gluten-free flour for the barley flour, they will be just fine. I'm going to try substituting the gluten-free flour for the oatmeal, too, and see how it works. Or maybe use some ground nuts? These authors know what they're doing, the recipes are really wonderful.

Animal covered dishes et al........2000-05-28
This books loses stars for two reason. The first reason being the book has too many non-animal covered dishes. A book titled ANIMAL COVERED DISHES should be just that! The second reason is the lack of in-depth information regarding the makers of the various dishes displayed. Many times the examples given are not always helpful considering the wide range of reproduction on the market. One never gets the feeling Grist writes about these dishes out of interest rather than the monetary value they possess. Kudos are given for the large pictures, clearly photographed and nicely captioned. Perhaps more of the space could have been used for information? More of a coffee table book than a collector's guide.
Recommended for easy identification of styles and makers........2000-04-06
Everett Grist's Covered Animal Dishes provides an excellent visual display with the nearly full-page color photos in front and the values listed in back. This makes for easy identification of styles and makers.

Book Description
