5 out of 5 stars Thou Shall not Grill.......2007-02-09

I have not read this book yet. But I enjoy all her books.
so that is why I bought the book. I give all her boos 5 stars

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe someone would read this!!.......2005-03-04

I found this book extremely boring and very hard to read. The conversations don't flow and the interaction between characters seems abrupt. In fact, I didn't even finish the book that is how borning it was. Now, I don't normally review every book I read unless I have very strong feelings and this produced a very strong sense of a waste of time!!! Do yourself a favor and get another book. Maybe something by Diane Mott Davidson.

5 out of 5 stars Strange new facts.......2004-09-22

Every time I read a book featuring Magdalena Protulacca Yoder, I learn several new things, such as, from this book: (1) She can't cook a lick. The recipes in all the books are cooked up by someone else. (2) She wears good Christian underwear. Perhaps she could be a little more specific in a future novel so that readers will know where to buy this sort of apparel. (2) Best of all, we learn that heaven is directly over North America, probably centered over Hernia, Pennsylvania, which means that Australian Christians have a lengthy trip halfway around the world when they die. This latter fact, especially, is worth knowing.

Never mind the plot of any of these Pennsylvania Dutch mysteries. This novel, like the others from the series, is a bit thin in that regard. The characters, especially Ms. Yoder, her weird sister, and the even weirder brother-in-law sheriff, are sufficient. Throw in Hernia and Ms. Yoder's inn, and I'm hooked.

4 out of 5 stars 'Grill' is a Thrill.......2004-07-21

A buried treasure in a time capsule is sought after, and the thieves don't leave murder out of their options. Another winner by Tamar Myers, this book features two of her newest characters, a pre-teen foster daughter and Magdalena's Jewish mother-in-law-to-be, who is at her best squaring off with the inn's fiesty Amish cook, Freni. Mag's run-ins with Melvin are in top form. Fast, fun reading.

4 out of 5 stars The time-capsule murder.......2004-04-09

Magdalena Yoder's Penn-Dutch Inn has been booked for months for the bicentennial barbeque which is being held in the town of Hernia, Pennsylvania. She is ready to welcome her guests to her pricey establishment and to offer them the bargain of having an authentic Amish experience by charging them more for cleaning their own rooms and doing other chores. Her most obnoxious guest is Buzzy Porter, who loves practical jokes and who specializes in whoopie cushions and mousetrap chewing gum packages. When Buzzy is found dead near the site of the time capsule which is to be opened soon, Magdalena knows that she must step in and solve the murder because of the incompetance of her brother-in-law, who is chief of police. Her suspicions soon turn to her guests and she questions each one to discover their connection to the time capsule, which is purported to contain a treasure map. Tamar Myers always writes with wit and style and this book is no exception. Readers will enjoy her quips and her humorous characters in this latest addition to the Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery series.

Don't think you'll get the Mayo Clinic Instant Weight-Loss Diet in this book--there's no such thing. Instead, you get the information that the esteemed Mayo Clinic physicians and dietitians give their patients about weight control. There's no doctor-speak here: every point is explained simply and clearly, organized with frequent bold headings for easy skimming, and illustrated with helpful charts.

Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight is divided into three parts: "Getting Motivated," "How to Lose Weight," and "When You Need More Help," including medications and surgery. The information is highly individualized, encouraging you to identify your unique challenges, eliminate your overeating triggers, and try new foods. The authors set the record straight about low-carb diets ("people do not gain weight on high-carbohydrate diets unless they are eating excess calories") and low-fat diets ("low-fat does not necessarily mean low-calorie"). They prompt you instead to use the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid to eat moderate portions of a varied, nutritious diet, emphasizing lower-calorie foods that make you feel full because they contain fiber and/or water.

Mayo Clinic on Healthy Weight has plenty of extras that make the book interesting and instructive: how to read a food label; recipe ingredient substitutions; eight luscious-looking, illustrated recipes; the number of calories burned during various exercises; and tricks for changing bad habits.

The Mayo Clinic is one of the country's most prestigious medical institutions, with more than 2,000 physicians and scientists in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Scottsdale, Arizona. This book doesn't offer shortcuts or fad diets--just the truth about weight loss, as the experts understand it. --Joan Price

    Book Description

For more than 30 years various versions of the so-called "Mayo Clinic Diet" have surfaced in many forms and places, promising to peel off pounds magically. These diets did not originate at Mayo Clinic.

Now, for the first time, Mayo Clinic offers a safe and effective program to help you achieve and maintain the weight that is right for you.

The book emphasizes a lifestyle approach that combines a healthy diet along with exercise to result in a 1- to 2- pound loss each week that is considered safe and effective. The goal is to achieve long-term changes in your food selections and exercise habits that you can maintain for life.

This new book from nutrition experts at Mayo Clinic includes a step-by-step 12-week program to get you started on achieving your healthy weight. The program applies the principles of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid to help you make better decisions about what to eat and find ways to add enjoyable exercise to your daily life. Rather than focusing on fat or carbohydrates, Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody emphasizes the three factors that scientific data link to weight and health--calorie content, a healthy variety of foods and physical activity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Plan for Everybody.......2007-01-30

Whether or not you need to lose weight, this book is an excellent guide to healthy eating for life. The recipes are so easy that we're able to incorporate them into our everyday menus easily. We're all getting out 5-a-day, and then some! For weight maintenance, all you need to do is add a few more portions of some food groups. Even without reading the book, you can open up to the menu pages and start right away. You can also follow this plan on a tight budget since there aren't any hard to find or expensive ingredients. Between the eating plan and very helpful exercise goals, this has got to be the easiest way to get or stay healthy I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life.......2006-06-11

I can't say enough good things about this book. I had tried everything. I was fairly successful on the Body for Life program, but it took too much time. All I did on that program was eat and workout. I have a life. I need time for my family, work, continuing education and other activities. When I saw my life suffering at the expense of my body, I had to compromise the Body for Life program. I then ballooned back up to being obese. My doctor tried to talk me into a gastric bypass because my weight was getting so bad. This book from the Mayo Clinic gave me a diet that was very easy and had a lot of great food. I haven't even been tempted to wander from this program at all. The variety of food has filled my food addiction while also taking the weight off of me. I have been continually losing weight and my doctor is not worried about me at all now. She even just filled out a physical report stating that I am in very good health.

If you want good food, good health and time for a real life, this is the only book for you.

    4 out of 5 stars healthy eating.......2006-03-16

I have found this book helpful for reworking my eating plans and just improving health. It is fairly comprehensive and I think it is probably the kind of material you would get if you went to a nutritionist. If you want to lose weight sensibly I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Takes some dedication.......2006-03-08

I've fought my weight my whole life. I've always been afraid of "fad" diets or diets that exclude one particular food. I think they are not a healthy way to lose weight. Everyone kept telling me to "eat a balanced diet" but no one explained what that meant. People talk about saturated fats, trans fats, etc and I felt like they were speaking a foreign language. My friends would count calories or carbs and would become frustrated. I didn't want to do any of that.

I bought the "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody" when we moved and I had plenty of time for a "project". It is a 12 week program designed to get you into the habit of eating healthy. The first three weeks were a lot of work and took a lot of dedication. I had to weigh and measure everything. After the first three weeks, my eyes adjusted and were able to do the measurments without the scale and cups. Some of the recipes are a lot of prep and there is a lot of cutting of vegi's and fruits. My husband and my 2 teenage kids didn't mind the changes (except brown rice) so after the first 3 weeks "learning curve", it all worked out well. I lost 25 lbs in 12 weeks and I never even got into the exercise part. After the 12 weeks, I stopped tracking my number of servings for 3 months. I still ate the same foods and made sure I didn't eat "A LOT" or high calorie foods. I stopped losing weight but I didn't gain it all back either. I have started tracking my servings again and have started working on the exercise. I have set my goal to lose another 25 lbs in the next 12 weeks.

I agree with everyone else here that the information is presented in a way that is easy to understand and explains it all. The book gets indepth but it is presented in a way that if you don't care what "trans fat" is, you can skip that part. I've even gien this book as presents to friends and family. I bought the cookbook too but I don't like that one.

5 out of 5 stars mayo clinic healthy weight for everybody.......2006-02-26

This book has been an excellent help to my family. We have not had any trouble adjusting to the menus and it has been very helpful to us by changing our eating habits. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs help with losing weight. The menus are easy to follow and prepare and the recipes are very tasty.

a definitive work. The two vol. could easily replace the other fifteen books on the subject of clippers that I have on my shelves.

5 out of 5 stars The only reference Guide to American Clipper Ships available.......2001-08-22

This excellent reference guide originally published by the Marine Research Society in Salem, Mass. in 1926-27, actually consists of two Volumes:

    Vol 1: Adelaide-Lotus: ISBN: 0486251152

    Vol 2: Malay-Young Mechanic: ISBN: 0486251160

Volume 1 covers all American Clipper Ships built from 1833-1858 whose names begin with the letters A through L, and Volume 2 covers from M through Y. I don't know why they are offered separately, as Volume 1 also contains the introduction and Volume 2 the Index, so it makes no sense to purchase these separately. Also the pagination is consecutive. The brief introduction explains the criteria used to define a Clipper Ship, which is a ship "...of peculiar construction, designed for great speed rather than for capacity." (p.v) The authors Octavius T. Howe and Frederick C. Matthews consider the "Ann McKim" launched at Baltimore in 1833 to be the first Clipper, and the era of the Clipper to be over by 1858 with the launching of "The Star of Peace" at Newburyport. The books are basically listings of all 352 known Clipper Ships arranged alphabetically. Some entries are brief; others however are quite lengthy and include excerpts of contemporary descriptions in the Press and in Correspondence. It seems that the Sailing Records of Ships were of great interest to the authors, so the records of the fastest voyages on several routes can be found in these books. The Index includes not only the names of Ships, but also of Captains, Owners and Builders. Also included are reproductions of about 100 paintings and some drawings. These have not fared so well in the reprint edition, and their quality is sometimes not so good, but many are still helpful. This almost 800 page long book can be used as a reference book, or as a book just to page around. Original editions are quite hard to come by and expensive, so this reprint edition is very reasonably priced and a welcome addition to any Bookshelf of Maritime History.

I found this book very interesting in learning how to create correct paper toles. How to cut, layer, overlap, attach the prints together. How to hide msitakes, and how to overall present the product for sale.

2 out of 5 stars Great but poor in quality.......2006-04-20

The book is well written but in order to understand the steps that are explained, you need to have better quality pictures. So, indirectly the book is useless to me. To beginners, you are still somewhat lost because without those clear pictures, you can not see how to relate what the author is saying.

    2 out of 5 stars Overpriced Book.......2002-11-14

I purchased this book because I have always been fascinated and intrigued by the art/craft of paper tole. The cover seems to imply that the contents will be of the same quality. Though I found the treatment of the subject to be quite thorough, the quality of the photos is poor, in black and white, grainy and with poor resolution. I find it interesting that the the only supply source listed is that owned by the author...

          Book Description

In the past European scholars have tended to treat both Madhyamaka and Yogacara as separate and fundamentally opposed trends in Mahayana Buddhist thought. Drawing heavily on early textual evidence this work questions the validity of such a "Mahayana schools" hypothesis. By down-playing the late commentorial traditions, the author attempts a general reappraisal of the epistemological and ontological writings of Nagarjuna, Asanga and Vasubandhu. He concludes that the overlap in all areas of doctrine is significant, but particularly with respect to the teachings on the levels of truth, the enlightened and unenlightened states, the status of language and the nature of reality. It is hoped that such investigations may provide the basis for a new theory on the proliferation of Indian Mahayana Buddhism as an organic process of assimilation to new audiences, and specific contemporary problems, rather than in the more schismatic manner favoured by past researchers.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Luminous perspective.......2002-07-14

This book does a great service to those of us who have been struggling with the elusive Nagarjuna. It reveals the depth of his roots in early Buddhist tradition (building on and correcting the work of A.K. Warder and David Kalupahana) and allows his works to be read as a vibrant repristination of basic Buddhist insight. Particularly interesting is the account of the early Buddhist antecedents of Nagarjuna's formulation of the two truths theory (conventional and ultimate truth). Harris also shows how close were the Yogacara (mind-only) and Madhyamaka (emptiness) traditions and how inapposite is the later labeling of them as rival "schools." He blames many of the distortions in our view of Nagarjuna on his most famous commentator Candrakirti, whom he accuses of radicalizing the contrast of the two truths at the expense of conventional truth (pp. 116-17). Candrakirti accuses Yogacara of absolutizing a conventional doctrine (which he has no quarrel with as such), but Harris claims that the Yogacarins "actually agree with him that all dogmas must be, by definition, non-ultimate" (p. 164). Candrakirti's sparring-partner Bhavaviveka attacks Yogacara from the opposite angle, accusing it of devaluing conventional reality; this again misses the substantial overlap of the Madhyamaka and Yogacara traditions. Harris is a master of the sources, which he quotes and translates illuminatingly throughout. He evokes the realm of nirvana and emptiness, the quiescence of fabrications, in lucid pages that have "the savor of liberation." He asserts that emptiness is a state of mind, not an ontological reality, and perhaps goes too far in this direction. He talks of ultimate reality as "an ontologically indeterminate existence realm" (p. 131), which is rather opaque and unhelpful diction. What he means is that it lies beyond the grasp of dualistic categories of being and non-being. (Alas, there are an appalling number of misprints, despite the high price of the book.)

                            Book Description

1928. The story of an American woman 1860-1927. Found in this volume are various stories and anecdotes of Juliette Low by those who knew her best. It was Juliette Low's love, humor, courage, keenness, common sense and achievement which led to the formation of the Girl Guides, later renamed the Girl Scouts. It is largely thanks to these qualities that one great-hearted woman helped scouting take root and gain the widespread power for good it holds today among the girlhood of America. Handsomely illustrated.

This book was not the best book I have ever read, nor is it the worst. There were many interesting aspects about it, but others were vague. It had a very weak beginning and was hard to get into, but after the first couple of chapters, it really was interesting. I would reccomend it to people who enjoy mysteries and a sort of horror.

5 out of 5 stars We've Come a Long Way but, We're Not There Yet........2003-01-16

Italy and Back is an easy to read and hard to put down novel that portrays a slice of a black mans life as a marine. Italy and Back is a vivid and excellent narrative account of how injustices, racism, hatred and ignorance interfere with the purported purpose our forefathers had when they wrote and signed the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and Civil Rights Law. We have all seen or experienced how leaders (supervisors or persons in charge of others) misuse their authority and how difficult it is for people to mesh their personalities, hopes, and backgrounds into a professional relationship. Although we are created equal, we are not treated equal. Rodney King so movingly stated, "Why can't we all just get along". Italy and Back depicts how when in the mist of adversity, you must continue to perform tasks with competence and skill, continue to struggle for freedom, and that through the tragedies and triumphs the Constitution of the United States will support you, the Declaration of Independence will stand by you and the Bill of Right and Civil Right will protect you. I saw more clearly how Huntley's edifying experience is more the rule than not and that the struggle for freedom, justice and opportunity continues. We've come a long way, but we're not there yet.

3 out of 5 stars One CAN Overcome Adversity.......2001-07-20

Italy and Back tells the tale of Bobby Huntley's journey through childhood and manhood, and the lessons that he learned along the way through his military career and through his life. In a simple writing style, Huntley takes the reader through a life that had to endure the verbal fights between his parents, the loss of a father, racism during his schooling, the love and pride he felt for the Marines, the subsequent struggles of racism that he dealt with in the Marines, his marriage, children, and the ending of that marriage, among so many other things.

Though this story is only one man's tale, it still has the ability to touch others, and to let them know that in life, there will be many obstacles, but through your will and your belief in God, you can withstand them to reach your goals. Readers will find this book to hold many life lessons and inspirational thoughts to take for their own lives.

5 out of 5 stars STILL FIGHTING THE BATTLE.......2001-03-30

After reading this book it seemed to have touched my soul. I currently am serving in the U S Marine Corps and have twenty years of service. You see, Mr Huntley served with my first cousin while he was stationed in Washington, so this was as though hearing a story told by a old family member again. Some of what you'll read still goes on, yet it is hidden much more these days by what we call "the good ole boys club". Take the time to read this book placing yourself in his shoes. You will probably find the same is going on in your line of work. I can only applaud Mr. Huntley for his efforts to educate his people in the ways of the world. Remember what got him through and continues to help him march forward today. FAITH! Congradulations on a job well done. Semper Fi, GySgt Stanton D Wilson

It is flooded with life teaching experiences that anyone can relate to no matter what your race, religion, creed or background. From these dynamic experiences it has reminded me to never give up no matter what test, trails or obstacles I may encounter. Mr. Bobby R. Huntley, you are truly a blessed, gifted and talented writer. It's awesome to know that an African American Man has not only written this book, but has self-published and promoted his own book! I'm really looking forward to Part II.
