Book Description
Nominated for both an Agatha and an Anthony Award, Susan Wittig Albert's novels featuring ex-lawyer and herb-shop proprietor China Bayles have won acclaim for their rich characterization and witty, suspenseful stories of crime and passion in small-town Texas.
In her first mystery, China's friend Jo dies of an apparent suicide. China searches behind the quaint façade of Pecan Springs and takes a suspicious look at everyone. Though she finds lots of friendly faces, China is sure that behind one of them hides the heart of a killer.

thyme of death.......2007-05-30
This book truly was better than the average cozy. The main character, China Bayles, has much room to grow, which I am sure happens throughout the series. The plot was actually well written and interesting. China didn't jump to conclusions, which is probably b/c she is an ex-lawyer. Too many times in cozies, the heroine jumps to a conclusion, early on, that the reader knows is erroneous. China is actually a smart and real heroine.
The information about herbs was the icing on the cake and made the series that much more enjoyable. Definitely recommended for lovers of cozies.
It's all in the details..........2007-04-11
This one was a book club selection, and it was enjoyable, with plenty of twists and turns (though not all of them unexpected). The main character was likable enough, for an ex-lawyer. The one mystery I became absorbed with was not intended to be the focal point of the story. But I became obsessed with finding when the book was set. It was written in a very unspecific, late 20th century setting. But towards the end, they make reference to a football game, and a score. A somewhat plausible one, even, if you start with the given time of 11:45, add in the `five minutes later`s and some extra time for the action, and arrive at `middle of the first quarter.' Teams (Packers and Cowboys) and a score (21-3, GB) are even given, though it is not mentioned if it is a home or away game. The copyright date of the book is 1992, so I set about looking for a plausible year (I researched back into the 70's, anything further than that would not have fit because of the technology, etc). Green Bay and Dallas played each other twice in 1989 (Oct and Dec) and once in 1991 (Oct). Given that it was mentioned that the last days of summer were fading, and there was no mention of an impending Christmas holiday, I ruled the December game out. 1991 is out, because the final score was 20-17, Dallas, and in this game GB had already scored 21. In 1989 the game ended 13-31, GB, and that is a possible outcome of the given score. So I determined, given the facts, that this fiction story set in a fictional town took place the week of October 8, 1989.
A Sublime Series.......2007-03-24
I was fortunate enough to pick up the first book in the series, and am reading them all in sequence. The "China Bayles" series is so distinctly refreshing that I'm gobbling them down like peanuts! The books take place in the fictional Texas town of Pecan Springs, and I guarantee that after you've read a few (or even one)you'll want to move there. The writing is intimate and cozy, informative and interesting.
Ms. Albert is an extremely talented author. Her characters easily come alive, and I suspect she lives with them and understands them inside and out. The voices are strong and always even. Within the series as a whole, she takes them upon a life's journey. They grow and change, learn and discover things about themselves. There is nothing static about them, which I find quite unique in a mystery series. There's a lightness to the novels, a natural humor that shines through each and every one, no matter how grim the circumstances. China herself is a complex and yet easily identifiable character, a strong, independent woman who was once an attorney but who has given up that career, that rat race, to settle in a small Texas town where she now owns and operates a shop wherein she sells herbs and other natural products. She is complemented by her friend, six-foot Ruby Wilcox, who owns the New Age shop next door. China has a beau, Mike McQuaid, a former Houston detective, now a lecturer on criminology at the local college. We are introduced to numerous townspeople, each with their own place and story, all woven skillfully into each book.
I have only one complaint, and it has nothing to do with the writing. The type face used by the publisher is not easy on the eyes, and the italics are odd enough to distract. That, however, has no bearing on what Ms. Albert has fashioned.
The China Bayles series is first-class entertainment, a pleasure to read, snd no reader would be disappointed in this well-crafted and well-written string of books. I would recommend them highly.
My new favorite mystery series.......2006-08-31
This book is not her best, but it was good enough to make me order the rest. I am glad I did, because they get more entrancing with each story. Don't misunderstand me, I do love this book. I just love each new one more than the last.
There are no rough areas, it is easy to suspend reality and immerse yourself in Susan Wittig Albert's books. In fact after buying my own, I scoured used book stores to find copies to loan my friends.
The characters are lively and engaging, as well as being believably human. The mysteries are easy to follow, but not too easy to solve. In short, these are very worthy books for those times when you need something to take your mind off of everything else.=)
Don't start here..........2006-04-18
While this is the first book of this series - and therefore has an important place in the series - I would recommend not to start here. I really think China takes some getting used to - and she really mellows throughout the series. I think you get a better sense of the series and characters by picking up a later book to start this series with. And then come back to this one and read it as part of the series. You'll like China better that way. The plot of Jo's death and investigation are decent, but not Albert's best work.

TOOK ME BY SURPRISE.......2001-10-03
There is a Playstation RPG that I've yet to play called Valkyrie Profile. From what I gather, the storyline has to do with gathering warriors for Odin prior to the Norse judgement day, Ragnarok. Now, how about something similar to that storyline, except as a book, though? I've read lots of popular fantasy, but not once have I heard of an author weaving a novel around Norse mythology. I've always believed that such a book would be a thrill to read. And believe me, Groa's Other Eye IS a thrill to read. This is every mythology-buff's dream. Voden (Odin), Osiris, Enuma Elish, Humbaba, Tror (Thor), Freyja (Freya), Tiamat and Marduk are just some of the mythological figures and names that appear in this work. And when I say "appear" I don't mean that the author just mentions the name once or twice. No, when you come to Tiamat, for example, expect a battle on a god-grand scale. My, but I wish more fantasy novels were like this one! The reader of this story will follow the adventures of three characters: Voden (Odin), Freyja (Freya), and an evil wizard named Surt. Strangely enough, I actually found the bad guys rather likeable in this book. For example, there is the evil Khamuas who is always cursing this mouse that he saw on the twelfth day of the first month of winter, as he strongly believes that it brought him bad luck. In short, this book has an extraordinary cast of characters. But even books that I rate 5 stars are not perfect. If we stretched the 5 stars out to 10, I'd have to give this a 9 or so. For one, there is a terrible lack of descriptive detail in regard to the land. I really would like to know what the city of Asgard looks like (and other places, too), but Dennis Schmidt offers the reader almost no way of visualizing it. Secondly, there were times I felt that Mr. Schmidt was giving his characters easy solutions to difficult problems. Oh, it just so happens that you have a special cloth and that I can use this to defeat Adad, Ta-Dah! Finally, this book will take some time getting used to. When you're constantly being barraged with mythological names, you'll find yourself going back to the glossary in order to get your bearings. But those three things are VERY small complaints. I honestly CAN NOT name ANY fantasy novel that is as DIFFERENT and ORIGINAL as this one. The bottom line is this: If you're a mythology/fantasy buff, you'll LOVE this book. Even if mythology isn't your cup of tea, you probably still love it, since it veers so far away from most formula-fantasy. Finally, the books in this series are very hard to find. For those of you wondering, the first book in the series is called "The First Name", the second we all should know is called "Groa's Other Eye", and the final book in the trilogy is called "Three Trumps Sounding".
Voden continues in his mystical journey to manhood........1998-08-10
Schmidt continues his saga by adding Egyptian and Chinese mythology in with the Norse. Voden, continuing his journey for Groa's other eye first must journey to the lands of ancient Egypt (or is it Africa, it's hard to tell) where he learns of the legend of Horus (his parallel) and picks up a few new friends. Finding Groa's other eye is only the first terrible part of his journey. He must also face the lands of the Jotun (Native American legends?) and the tree. A worthy continuation of the trilogy.

Required reading for any child "labeled" ADD or ADHD or any Teacher!.......2007-08-27
This book is incredible. All of my child's teachers wanted me to drug her to keep her in their style of learning "box". After reading this book, I found many tips and tricks to deal with her visual learning style and also it helped me to realize just how special she is!! It can be difficult raising a child who has been labeled ADHD but this book makes you realize how luck you are to have such a special child and that it isn't a bad thing, it's just different!
This book should be required reading for ALL teachers and administrators!!
The best book on ADD .......2007-01-28
Since my son was diagnosed 2 weeks ago I've been absorbing as much information as I can on ADHD. This book is the one (out of 5) that stands out the most so far. Freed hits the nail on the head with this book. There is potential and brilliance in these children that most schools (even the Montessori school my son is in) just don't know how to tap into. My son loves doing the reading, spelling and math exercises suggested. If you have a child with ADD/ADHD this book is a must!
Required Reading.......2007-01-12
I was treated to a presentation at our school by Mr. Freed. I was so moved by his eloquent explanations of children I see every day in my classroom, year after year. I am a middle school teacher who is presented with children who for years have been misunderstood, and untaught because of a lack of knowledge concerning their abilities, not disabilities. Simply understanding the concept of a right-brained child is tremendously insightful for any teacher, but should be required reading for any teacher of language arts and math. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart to my astounding students.
A Must Read.......2007-01-09
For anyone raising, teaching or otherwise involved in the care of kids with ADD/ADHD, this book is a "must read." As with any text, not every suggestion works for every reader, but those that do evoke amazing success.
Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on........2006-10-17
I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects. I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him. I am a believer. I have a right brained child!

The mania for healthy, low-fat eating has led to the demonization of what was once an icon of the American culinary tradition, the steak. Food writer William Rice, author of Where to Eat in America has committed the modern-day heresy of producing a paean to what he calls the "forbidden fruit" with Steak Lover's Cookbook. Although he may be preaching to the converted, he has created a wonderful book. Passionate about his subject, he waxes eloquent about his favorite cuts of meat, provides suggestions on the best foods to serve a prior to a big porterhouse, and offers up a host of recipes, classic and modern.
Book Description
Marrying simplicity and succulence, steak is a food everyone can understand, and one of the very few to inspire genuine craving. Steak is William Rice's avocation, his passion, and he's researched different preparations and flavors of steak from all over the world. A collection of over 140 recipes, steak lover's cookbook is divided between fancy uptown cuts (e.g., tenderloins, porterhouses, ribs) and the plainer but just as tasty downtown cuts (skirt, chuck, flank, round). It includes the Best-Ever recipe for each type, plus dozens of inviting alternatives, not to mention Steak Fries, Outrageous Onion Rings, and Mississippi Mud Pie. It's a steakhouse at home.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Steak.......2007-03-19
I found this cookbook interesting reading because it also includes buying and cutting tips as well as recipes for side dishes.
Yummm... Steak..........2004-05-08
First, I have to say that this cookbook has the best guide I've ever found to figuring out the doneness of a cut of steak without having to slice it open and let out those wonderful juices. That alone made its purchase worthwhile. The rest of the book is organized by cut of steak. There's the tenderloin chapter, the T-bone chapter, porterhouse, strip or top loin, rib, rib-eye, sirloin, chuck, etc. Each chapter starts with information on that particular cut: what its texture and taste are like, how large and thick it tends to be, what it may be called by your butcher, and how it can best be cooked. If you really want to turn out the best steaks in town, it's hard to find a better resource than this cookbook!
Some of the recipes in here are fairly standard. For instance, in the tenderloin chapter you'll find the classic "Steak au Poivre," or peppercorn steak. Some recipes are twists on classics: such as Surf and Turf, Asian Style. Rice pulls recipes from various cuisines, such as Stuffed Filets with Ancho Sauce, Steak and Noodles Vietnamese Style, and Three-Pepper Fajitas. You'll also find a few recipes that won't quite fit your standard view of steak: Asian Beef Salad with Cucumber, for instance, or flank Steak Sandwiches with Red Pepper-Dill Ketchup. Some are his own recipes; others are from various other chefs. You'll also find appetizers and side dishes, from Beer and Cheese Spread to Mango Guacamole.
New and interesting things are done with steak in this book; it's about as far as one can get from slapping it on the backyard barbecue two minutes before the football game. These are sumptuous and inventive dishes. But I think Mr. Rice realized that if he was going to put out a steak cookbook, he would have to cater to that other crowd as well. So every now and then you'll find him exhorting you to "serve it with beer!" (I think that last quotation should be imagined in a deep, manly voice.)
Not every recipe in this cookbook is equally stunning; some are merely mediocre. But the information provided is top-notch, and there are certainly some real prize-winners among the recipes (our favorite is the Bloody Mary Steak and Sauce).
Not as great as expected.......2004-04-23
I was excited when I first received the book. At first glance it looked compact enough, with large print that is easy to refer to. I was disappointed at the lack of real pictures (it's difficult to follow recipes without a color picture as a guide!). I wanted to learn methods to cook steak. This book basically gives you a bunch of different sauces and side dishes. If you are one of those steakhouse lovers that believe in nothing but salt, pepper, and a hot grill/pan to make the perfect steak, this book is not for you.
Bravo!.......2003-07-27
I bought this book to help me become a better grill chef. I love a steak cooked on my grill. There are tips for how to grill successfully here, especially on page 26 and page 6. There are several notable tips for insuring a great grilling experience, such as the admonition to use Salt on page 40 and 51. I love the composed butter recipe for T-Bone steaks.
The book is organized by types of "cuts". It is the uptown cuts that interest me the most. The sections about the T- Bone, Porterhouse, Strip, Rib Eye, and Sirloin. There are recipes for each type of cut. There are many asides in this book that describe the history of and tools used in cooking steaks.
I will not comment on the downtown or cross-town recipes because I've not spent much time with them.
I cannot help but favorably recommend a book the mentions a personal favorite steak house of mine in Ponder, Texas.
Don't be afraid of stinky cheese..........2003-03-05
This book is filled with wonderful recipes. Last week I made the Strip Steaks with Spanish Cheese Sauce. It is absolutely delicious. The Calabres cheese is pungent, but it makes a wonderful sauce for this steak, so don't be afraid to try it.

Collecting antique paper lithographed toys is an exciting and visually rewarding hobby. These vividly printed toys remind us of a time gone by when games, blocks, toys, dollhouses, puzzles, and books were designed by a method called chromolithography--a process that is as close to artistic perfection as a nineteenth-century painting. Filled with over 500 full color photographs, this book provides a fascinating and informative glimpse into the late Victorian era of toy making. Organized by type of item, each chapter includes useful facts about the history, manufacturing, and typical illustrations found on the toys and books, while values, measurements, dates, and game pieces are all provided in the captions. In addition, readers will find a valuable listing of the most prominent American and European manufacturers of the time, including McLoughlin Bros., Milton Bradley, Bliss, W. & S. B. Ives, Raphael Tuck, E.P. Dutton, and more. Never before has one book provided such a colorful guide to paper litho toy collecting, so take a step back in time to when toy making was a rare art!

Book Description
Harriet Tubman is one of the giants of American history—a fearless visionary who led scores of her fellow slaves to freedom and battled courageously behind enemy lines during the Civil War. And yet in the nine decades since her death, next to nothing has been written about this extraordinary woman aside from juvenile biographies. The truth about Harriet Tubman has become lost inside a legend woven of racial and gender stereotypes. Now at last, in this long-overdue biography, historian Kate Clifford Larson gives Harriet Tubman the powerful, intimate, meticulously detailed life she deserves.
Drawing from a trove of new documents and sources as well extensive genealogical research, Larson reveals Tubman as a complex woman— brilliant, shrewd, deeply religious, and passionate in her pursuit of freedom. The descendant of the vibrant, matrilineal Asanti people of the West African Gold Coast, Tubman was born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland but refused to spend her life in bondage. While still a young woman she embarked on a perilous journey of self-liberation—and then, having won her own freedom, she returned again and again to liberate family and friends, tapping into the Underground Railroad.
Yet despite her success, her celebrity, her close ties with Northern politicians and abolitionists, Tubman suffered crushing physical pain and emotional setbacks. Stripping away myths and misconceptions, Larson presents stunning new details about Tubman’s accomplishments, personal life, and influence, including her relationship with Frederick Douglass, her involvement with John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, and revelations about a young woman who may have been Tubman’s daughter. Here too are Tubman’s twilight years after the war, when she worked for women’s rights and in support of her fellow blacks, and when racist politicians and suffragists marginalized her contribution.
Harriet Tubman, her life and her work, remain an inspiration to all who value freedom. Now, thanks to Larson’s breathtaking biography, we can finally appreciate Tubman as a complete human being—an American hero, yes, but also a woman who loved, suffered, and sacrificed. Bound for the Promised Land is a magnificent work of biography, history, and truth telling.
From the Hardcover edition.

A Remarkable Hero.......2007-01-14
This book was exceptionlly well researched. The author did a good job of separating fact from fiction, while acknowledging the many myths about Harriet Tubman that have been part of the oral history surrounding this remarkable woman.
Voted Best Non Fiction 2005.......2006-03-09
An excellent book! You will learn so much more than you ever thought you knew about Harriet and what you did learn in school doesn't hold a candle to who she really is. This is a remarkable book and should be part of every middle school history class. Larson has done an excellent job bringing this much information to us and years of research do it. Remarkable!
You can't be Serious?!!!!.......2006-03-08
This book is woefully and inadequately researched. Here, again, there are those who want to continue to make a buck off the backs of slaves some 141 years later. The good news is that some of us know the truth and reject this as merely an Internet driven collaboration of conjecture. It is nauseating to suggest that Harriet's own account of her life can't be taken as fact. It's typical of these same people to accept, without question, the life recollections of Robert E. Lee or any of the other so-called "great American heroes". Typical yet not surprising. You should stick with subject matter that won't prove you wrong at the end of the day.
Bound for the Promised Land - A True Work of Scholarship.......2005-04-10
Bound for the Promised Land is the first book that I have actually read to the very end, in a long time. I could not put this book down! As I turned page after page, there was wonderful historic fact couched in a way that is easily understood by the reader and placed within a believeable context of time, places, and people whom Harriet Tubman encountered or assisted during her long lifetime.
Kate Clifford Larson brings Harriet Tubman to life because of the many details she includes in the book. I was in awe as to how the author would know such extensive information. Clearly, this book was thoroughly researched. The biographer goes beyond just presenting facts. She also analyzes situations and interprets them. One example concerns why Tubman 'kidnapped' her own niece and brought her to Canada. No other print source that I have read so far has presented a theory as to why that may have occurred.
This book is a must-read for any serious student of history and particularly those who are interested in the Underground Railroad and those abolitionists and conductors who facilitated flights to freedom. Magnificent piece of writing and well worth reading!
Patricia L. Cummings
Informative.......2005-02-06
Who is this woman they called "Moses?" and what did she do to acquire this name?
In this work by Kate Larson we examine the life and workings of Harriet Tubman, a remarkable woman who risked her life for others. The author takes us along the journey of Ms.Tubman's life and her battle for freedom and the freedom of others who were slaves at this time.
The author's work shows her intense research as she carefully outlines and puts together all the pieces of this incredible woman's life. Her writing style is factual yet she draws you along in a gentle storytelling manner that keeps your attention.
The pictures that were included added much realism to the read as pictures certainly help by putting a face on the character you are reading about. I found this work very enlightening and certainly learned a lot about an outstanding woman of history and the era in which she lived.
