Craig Shaw Gardner spins another winning tale in the first part of the Wuntvor trilogy, sequel to the Ebenezum trilogy. Old characters return and new ones pop up as Wuntvor desperately tries to save the world from the Netherhells, with the help of an oaf with a magic club, an amorous unicorn, a trio of demons, a talkative brownie, a Dragon and a Damsel, and a ferret.

After the events of "Night in the Netherhells," Wuntvor and Co. are safe. At first. Then it's discovered that Ebenezum's allergy to magic has spread to every wizard in Vushta. To make matters worse, Guxx Unfunfadoo has been deposed as Grand Hoohah, and soon the world will be Conquered by Committee. As the wizards puzzle out what to do, Wuntvor tries to deal with the animosity of some very large, angry apprentice wizards and the affections of dancing damsel Alea and jealous witch Norei. (Also the unicorn, who lusts after "Wuntie"'s lap.)

The wizards decide to send Wuntvor on a journey to the Eastern kingdoms, where giants reportedly eat people, and which is ruled by Mother Duck. (Yes, Mother Duck -- Gardner ventures into fairy-tale territory in this one) He's soon being confronted by Death, who announces that he is the "Eternal Apprentice" -- he'll reincarnate a thousand times as the quintessential apprentice, but Death can claim him if he is ever alone. The problem for Death is, Wuntvor has more than enough company: the exiled Guxx and Brax, the irritating Brownie, Snarks the truthful demon, Hendrek and his club, overamorous Alea and her singing dragon, and the pushy unicorn. Can Wuntvor keep from being claimed by death -- either by being alone, or by being eaten on pumpernickel?

Gardner's golden touch is turning to platinum in this book. His talents for kooky characters and overcomplicated conversations are getting better as time goes on. Perhaps the biggest problem with "Difficulty With Dwarves" is that it ends with a "to be continued." (The dwarves mentioned in the title are the "seven OTHER dwarves," including but not limited to Sickly, Nasty, Spacey, Smarmy... you get the idea)

Poor Wuntvor is still trying to keep up with events around him, and Ebenezum is trying to decide what to do (he makes another appearance inside a giant shoe). To really understand the cast of characters (oh yes, Cuthbert the cowardly sword appears as well) you have to read the Ebenezum trilogy. It's complex and outstandingly funny, with plenty of jumbled dialogue that never trips over itself. Ever seen a bumbling, inexplicably attractive hero defeat a giant with a magical toothpick? That's what you'll see here.

Fans of fantasy and fairy tales will enjoy seeing the staples of both being relentlessly spoofed in "Difficulty with Dwarves," and will be left bouncing with anticipation for the next book.

In Vushta, city of a thousand forbidden pleasures, there is something wrong. Every wizard there now sneezes when near magic! They all cought this cold when trying to cure their fellow wizard, Ebenezum, greatest mage in the Westerm Kingdoms! It seems like another quest is in the offerings, for, in the meantime, the demons in the Neatherhells, after failing to conquer the surface world, have settled on something new, something more horrifing then the Grand Hoohah, (don't ask!) Conquest by comittee. So, boldly, Ebenezum's appentice, Wuntvor, must set off alone, to try to talk the great and horrifing ruler of the Eastern Kingdom, Mother Duck, into helping them. At first the bold lad is alone upon his quest, (all his companions from the last quest were too busy arguing who shoud go and who shouldn't come), which is exactly the way someone, or rather, something wants him. Death Itself appears to Wuntvor, and reveals that the lad is only the latest reincarnation of the Eternal Apprentice, forever destined to aid true heros in his bumbling, inept way, with the help of any number of magical companions. And since he is forever being reincarnated if he dies, he is forever beyound Death's grasp, (something that drives the specter wild) unless he's alone. Well, Wuntvor happens to be alone at that moment. But before Death can take him to his kingdom, several unexpected companions arive. First there is one of Wunt's 500 magical ferrets. (He conjured it with a magic hat.) Then Tap the Brownie arrives, just in time to scare Death off. Two deamons, Gruxx Unfufadoo, former enemy of Wunt and former Grand Hoohah (don't ask)! and Braxx, traveling Salesdemon join up. Then the vadville act of dasmel and dragon show up. There is also the Warrior Hendrek, and the truthtelling deamon Snarks, as well as a unicorn that longs after Wunt's lap. But they soon learn that Mother Duck has made a pact with the Neatherhells, and intends to take them all to the Storybook, (they would have prefered being baked into bread!) Is this the end? I really love this book, but had to get it from a Z-shop. I recommend it to everyone and everything with a sense of humor!

Difficulty with dwarves is a great book. It is about an apprentice wizard named Wuntvore, an unlikely hero with a lot of problems. The novel starts of in Vushta City of a thousand pleasures He is searching for a cure fore his master Ebeniesum The greatest wizard of all time, who unfortunately has a sneezing malady caused by Gux an anoying Deamon who is bent on destroying the above world. I loved this book and anyone who enjoys a funny story line of absolutely bizarr events should read this book. The other two are just as good

This book is excellent and a must-read for any one interested in the effects of ADD on not only learning and academic achievement, but intepersonal dynamics, management of finances, and advancement in the workplace. Rather than providing either excuses or stigmatizing explanations, Brown provides scientific and anecdotal evidence for a complex, neurobehavioral profile of the executive functioning difficulties for those persons with ADD.

Great book for medical professionals and those who have some background in ADHD. Good for others, but can be a bit more complicated. Personally I found it very informative.

Excellent ADD educator.......2007-01-10

Excellent discussion of various facets of ADHD, including executive functions, various attention and processing problems and their effects. This is also one of the best books I've seen explaining the physiology of ADD at cellular level, and details on treatment and medication that I haven't found elsewhere. The text is early college level. It's well written and clear, but it's not fluffy light reading.

Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-08-17

I found this book informative with very current, new ideas. I knew that ADD ran in our family but after reading this book, I realize that there are manifestations of it that I had never considered ADD. Now I realize that even more of us have this condition. We present with diverse symptoms, abilities and coping strategies but according to this book they are caused by the same types of brain problems. That makes very good sense to me. It explains a great deal. I am 63 years old and have known 6 generations of my family from my great grandfather to my grandchildren. There are some with ADD in each generation. What I used to think of as quirks I now realize are ADD traits. This book has allowed me to be gentler on myself and members of my family. I bought 4 copies of this book and am giving them to family members. I hope that they will find this information as helpful as I have.

Excellent and Authoritative.......2006-06-21

The author of this wonderful book combines neuroscience and phychology to help dispel some the myths people have surrounding Attention Deficit Disorder. I could hardly put it down and often found myself lost within the pages for minutes on end. Much better than 'Driven to Distraction' IMO. Damn, what time was that meeting tomorrow? Oh yeah, I actually bought this for a family member who suffers from ADHD, so the doctor says. I'm thinking about buying a copy for everyone in my immediate family and probobly even a few distant cousins I haven't seen in years. Man, I wonder how old Doris is now anyway. Wasn't she the one that was adopted? No, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that was Greg. Doris must have been the one with the irritable bowel.

Anywho, this book has helped me out tremedously and is easily the best I have read on the topic. Highly recommended!

i first had jerk ribs at a jamaican restaurant in long beach, CA. ever since then, i have been searching for a jerk recipe that tastes as good as the ribs i had there. i tried several recipes i found online, and none of them were even close. finally, i got this book, and made the jerk marinade recipe. bingo. this is it. that's the taste i remember! lots of the other recipes look great too. i'm looking forward to trying more of them.

I dare you to find a bad recipe in this book. Every single recipe is a winner. The Jamaican cole slaw is so good everyone who eats it asks me for the recipe. The same for the jerk chicken. I love this book.

My husband and I have tried numerous recipies from this cookbook and each one has turned out 100% successful!! Helen has captured the true taste and flavor of the Caribbean with each and every recipe in this cookbook! This is our favorite cookbook!! We highly recommend her recipe for Dry Jerk Seasoning on Page 16!!!!! If you try her Jamaican Cole Slaw on Pg. 115, we would suggest adding pineapple. The sweet flavor makes it perfect!!! If you are going to buy ANY Caribbean or Jamaican cookbook, this is the BEST one by far!!!!!!

This is a "use it" cookbook !!.......1998-07-01

I have tried at least 10 of the receipes in this book and find it very hard to move on to others. The ones that I have tried are always repeated in some cases many times over. The Dry Jerk seasoning is a staple which I have prepared and given as gifts in fancy found jars (page 16). "Wid It" is a special treat that is a must. My all time favorite "Jerked Spareribs", that I place in a platter, cut ribs into small chunks, mix well with white rice, yellow raisens, cashews, and pineapple rings cut into chunks, smooth,put a flat layer of yellow corn on top, place pineapple rings on top of corn, spill all of the juice from the can all over the top and add a few maraschino cherries for color!! It's the BEST!!

I made the spice rub like the recipe in the book and have mainly cooked some of the chicken. It tastes very munch like that I buy down the street at a place that makes jerk dishes. The "cook" is from Jamaica and he says thats the way they make it down there. The tastes are quite a departure from any other foods I have eaten. It Jerk Mon.......2007-05-13

When we went to Jamaica in '05 for the first time, we broke out of the all-inclusive, rented a driver and took a day trip long the north coast. We had our first meat patties and stopped at the driver's favorite jerk stand and had our first real jerk chicken washed down with Red Stripe.

When we cook out of this book, every recipe takes us back. We brought Helen's first book back with us from Jamaica and we never cooked anything from it that we didn't enjoy. What I get from this book is the sense of Jerk. I grow my own Scotch Bonnets and now prefer them over the many Habanero varieties I've grown. I look for the biggest Jamaican pimento berries I can find (usually at a Mexican grocery).

If you've ever had jerk and wondered if you can do it too--buy this book. You can! Follow her recipes and it will be jerk, Mon.

Delicious Jamaican Jerk Cooking.......2007-04-10

I received "Jerk from Jamaica" in the mail on Saturday, and my husband and I couldn't resist planning a feast for the next day. Already I'm singing the praises of this book, and I just can't get enough of the leftovers.

Helen Willinsky grew up in Jamaica, studied cooking in Europe, and ran a resort in Jamaica; she includes family recipes, traditional recipes, and recipes that blend older Jamaican elements with newer ingredients and traditions. She strikes a beautiful balance, one so many authors fail to achieve, between introducing us to traditional methods and ingredients and yet making it possible for us to enjoy Jamaican flavors in our own kitchens even if we don't have access to a barbecue grill or all of the traditional Jamaican flavorings.

You'll need access to some sort of barbecue grill or the equivalent in order to get the most out of this cookbook, it's true, but it's certainly worth buying even if you don't have that. Oven directions are included for many recipes, and there are even adaptations to the slow cooker and other such modern conveniences. A few sources for ingredients are provided, as well as substitutions using more commonly-found items.

The quality of the recipes is right up there with the Sugar Mill cookbook, but this book focuses primarily on a simpler, narrower type of cooking. It's easy to whip up these recipes with little advance notice, but they'll satisfy your tastebuds for days on end. If you're looking for something new to do with your grill, this will certainly qualify!

Not bad, but would like something better..........2006-02-23

I bought this book for a behavior elective I am taking in veterinary school. The book is very well organized with the first part of the book discussing behavior in general and familiarizing the reader with behavior terminology and different types of treatments and prevention (socialization, pharmacological intervention, and diet to name a few). The second half of the book targets more individual problems for dogs and then cats. The beginning of each chapter is clearly labeled with the contents to be found in the chapter, making the book very easy to navigate.

Each individual behavior issue is outlined with a short introduction including a definition of the problem and is then followed by short sections of "Diagnosis and Prognosis", "Management", "Prevention" and then a "Case Example". Key information for each behavior problem (if available) is highlighted in blue boxes at the end of the problem.

I really like the first part of this book (the basic information I discussed above). The second part (the part that addresses individual problems) is a bit disappointing. The downside to this book is that the second part leaves me hungry for more information. In several of the individual cases, the information seems more common sense rather than a new and exciting revelation. Multiple "Case Examples" do not resolve the problem and leave the reader hanging, wondering "Well, how DO you solve the problem?"

One of the biggest things this book missed is animal psychology. It is not really mentioned or integrated in the book. I believe understanding cat and dog psychology (how they think and react to situations in general) is a HUGE key in understanding behavior and behavior problems. If the authors had incorporated it, I think this book would have been worth 5 stars.

Bottom line - If you are curious about animal behavior and want to learn more about it, this book can probably teach you a great deal. However, if you have worked with animals alot and understand their body language and how to train animals and work through issues, this book probably won't be as useful to you.

This is not a bad behavior book, but I think I'll continue the search to see if I can find one I like better.

Concise review of clinical behavior.......2001-06-24

This book is an extremely useful book on several levels. For the veterinary general practioner, this is a handbook that lives up to the title; the information can be found quickly and easily. For the veterinarian who has an interest in clinical behavior, the book has a large amount of useful indepth information. For the scientist who want to know more about clinical behavior, this book contains an up to date state of the field (in the year it was published). And finally for the veterinary behaviorist, this book has much to offer as well. I highly recommend this book for all graduating veterinarians. If you are a veterinarian and you are only going to have one behavior book in your library, this is it.

In the last twenty years, over 1000 artists have used the facilities of the Australian Print Workshop, which serves artists embracing all styles of work, from realistic portraits to pixilated abstractions. This handsome book includes 93 works by 57 of those artists.

Established in 1981, the Australian Print Workshop (APW) has attracted many of Australia's leading artists on the basis of its reputation for collaborating with artists to produce printed images and its excellent support facilities. This book celebrates the work produced at AWP between 1981 and examines the involvement of Australian artists in the production of prints, and their stylistic, technical, and political concerns during these decades.

The Workshop has been involved in many special projects, from the Australian Bicentennial Print Project of 1988, to providing hotels with original prints for its rooms and public spaces, to the Wurreka 50-meter-long etched zinc wall mural by Judy Watson for the Melbourne Museum. The Workshop has been highly active in facilitating the production of prints by Indigenous Australian artists, particularly in remote communities and the promotion of Australian prints overseas.
