When a woman is mistakenly assassinated by a sniper from a white supremacist militia, her death brings together her FBI agent fiancee and her journalist lover, John Menden. The two team up to exact revenge by destroying the militia group, known as the Freedom Ring, with Menden infiltrating the group's Liberty Ridge compound. When he falls in love with the commander's daughter the plot becomes tautly complicated. In a scenario grounded in events on the right-wing fringes of U.S. society, Parker engineers a grandly violent climax to assuage all Menden's macho hatred.

A Case of Mistaken Identity.......2004-11-17
Rebecca Harris is serving an internship at the Orange County Journal under the tutelage of the celebrated columnist,Susan Baum. She is shot dead while unlocking the door of Susan's car in front of the newspaper's offices. It is an obvious case of mistaken identity and there is no doubt that the intended victim is really Susan, who has made too many enemies through her columns.
After returning from a six month leave of absence from the FBI, Rebecca's former fiance, Joshua Weinstein, conducts his own private investigation of the murder. Satisfied that he knows the identity of the man responsible for the crime, Josh gets permission to carry out a separate operation to be funded by federal Hate Crimes money. He enlists the aid of John Menden, Rebecca's lover. Menden gets the toughest assignment because he has to infiltrate an ultraconservative organization headed by the fanatical Vann Holt. Joshua feels certain that Holt is responsible for Rebecca's death but he does not have enough evidence yet to win a conviction. Menden's task is to get the needed proof.
Menden is an appealing hero who seems to be just an ordinary guy caught up in an extraordinary situation. Holt is a complicated character with great strengths and flaws. Both are skillfully drawn by the author who keeps the reader in suspense to the end.
THE EMPTINESS OF REVENGE.......2004-04-05
Parker has written a very interesting and evocative thriller in THE TRIGGERMAN'S DANCE. Ultimately, it is a novel of revenge: Both John and Joshua want to avenge the accidental death of the woman they loved; Joshua also inwardly wants revenge for knowing that prior to her death, Rebecca was going to choose her lover, John and not Joshua, her fiance. Fueled by this revenge, John and Joshua work together to bring the killer to justice. A complex undercover assignment begins, with startling, if predictable results. There are times in the novel when you want Parker to hasten things along; it seems like the time John spends on the ranch is interminable, and there are times when the action slows down. Fortunately, this doesn't hurt the overall impact of the story. Parker is to be commended for allowing us to like and dislike both John and Joshua; to like and dislike the villain, Vann Holt; and to feel sorry for Valerie, Holt's daughter who ends up falling for the mole, John.
This is a thoughtful, emotional novel and though not as suspenseful as some thrillers, still manages to both entertain and stimulate.
Hang with this one..it gets better and better........2002-07-21
I think I understand why some folks gave THE TRIGGERMANS DANCE a fair review.
It starts really SLOW..so slow that I was thinking about the next book I was going to read. The character's..at the beginning..are not very interesting..and the story plods along.
But..as I said..near page 100 or so..I began to care about John and the FBI agent, Joshua.
The story is basically about revenge and what some are willing to do to achieve it. Two men in love with the same woman join forces to bring down the guy they think is responsible for a murder and there broken hearts. Is this guy guilty or innocent?
When the author introduces Van Holt, a former FBI agent things really begin to take off. The tension builds and builds. Summing up..I would say..Stay with this one.
T.Jefferson Parker knows how to write a good thriller, this time it just took a little while to get going.
The triggerman's dance.......2001-11-01
A page turner from the beginning..
Slow-Building Suspense.......2001-08-14
After a woman is mistaken for a colleague and gunned down in the parking lot of the newspaper where she works, she leaves behind two men bent on revenge. One of them is an FBI agent and her fiancé; the other is a fellow journalist and her lover. Josh Weinstein, the FBI agent enlists John Menden, the lover to take an undercover role to bring the killer to justice. What makes this difficult is the suspect is an ex-FBI agent who now heads a very successful security agency and is surrounded by both heavily armed employees and a patrolled, virtually impregnable fortress.
While the idea is good one, vengeance for the death of a loved one, the execution was just a little sloppy. The pretext that was used to penetrate the fortress was just a little too unbelievable for my liking. That's just a minor quibble on my part though and once I accepted that Mendon was in, I got on with enjoying the tension of a mole working undercover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you enjoy this kind of slow boiling suspense story, then I think you'll enjoy "The Triggerman's Dance".

Favorite Hoffman book.......2005-01-26
Although "The Thread That Binds the Bones" gets a little more attention, "The Silent Strength of Stones" is my favorite Hoffman book with "A Stir of Bones" running a close second.
The standout for me is Hoffman's Nick Verrou, the young hero. He is not perfect by any means but his motives, actions and reactions are very true. His voice is clear in the story even if he's not always sure of where he is going.
The other thing that I like is that Hoffman resists the urge to have a closed ended narrative. Not every story thread has an ending. Although the main story plot has closure, there are other significant moments that do not and within this story and the way that the characters interact, the open-ended storytelling makes sense. It may be understandably frustrating to some readers, but I felt it was appropriate because the main characters are young and nothing at that age has easy closure because they are really just at the beginning of their lives. Hoffman allows that sense of non-closure come through.
The last thing that I like is Hoffman's prose. There is something magical about the way she writes. Smooth, clear, and deceptively simple. She makes the story that unfolds seem effortless and natural. That's a rare talent.
Hoffman is not for everyone but for those of us who find her and admire her work, she's a treasure. And "The Silent Strength of Stones" is my favorite treasure of hers.
An exciting new discovery!.......2003-08-28
Nina Kiriki Hoffman is a new discovery for me, and one long overdue. The Silent Strength of Stones is an excellent introduction to her writing, which -- like contemporaries Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, Terri Windling, etc. -- crafts a highly developed fantasy world within the framework of a thoroughly modern, very real society. Her characters are finely drawn and wholly believable in this setting, and the story resolves neatly while still leaving ample room for a sequel.
Hoffman is an exciting writer -- I can't remember the last time I found one who intrigued me this much!
By the Pricking of My Thumbs..........2002-07-30
Exceptionally-intriguing fantasy novels by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, who's won all kinds of writing awards--Bram Stoker, World Fantasy. The Thread that Binds the Bones and The Silent Strength of Stones deal with an extended family of magic-users, and all the moral/social/familial dilemmas in which they find themselves, in relationships within the family and with outsiders. The magic is believable, all tied up with dead ancestors and unseeable spirits and ancient family history, and it varies from person to person, family to family, generation to generation, like any other inherited trait (instead of "Oh, she's got her grandmother's blue eyes!" it becomes "Oh, she's got her grandmother's second sight!"). Thread deals with the arrival of an outsider, unrelated to the Family in any way, whose inate powers are different from, and stronger in some ways, than those of the Family, and who falls in love all in an instant with a semi-despised daughter of the Family, and between the two of them, the slow steady decline into evil behavior begins to reverse. Stones deals with a long-lost unknown cousin of the Family, living on his own, unaware of his potential, who meets up with some of his relatives and comes of age.
They're good, really really good. Eerie, resonant, by-the-pricking-of-my-thumbs stuff...
It's another book by Nina Kiriki Hoffman!.......2001-10-16
What else can I say? This writer wraps you up in a world so believable, so tangible that you forget everything else. She makes you laugh and cry and sigh, sometimes all in a single sentence. I have never read anything by Nina that has failed to please and this is yet another winner. This is dark fantasy that chills. She and Joss Whedon should collaborate sometime!
This books was terrific.......2001-08-31
This was a really great book. It sucks you in and is very hard to put down. Its just enough fantasy and magic for me. An ordinary guy in an ordinary life, and he turns out to be not so ordinary after all. I don't like the whole unicorn and dragon adventure quest type fantasy that is everywhere, and have a hard time finding ones I think I'll like. This was one of them..very different type of fantasy. I wish I knew a category to call it. I don't know what it is about her books, but I just can't get enough, I wish 'Thread that Binds..' wasn't so hard to find. I read the Red Heart of Memories, and then I was immediately hooked on her writing.

How to help--and cope with--the difficult child
Expanded and completely revised, the classic and definitive work on parenting hard-to-raise children with new sections on ADHD and the latest medications for childhood disorders.
Temperamentally difficult children can confuse and upset even experienced parents and teachers. They often act defiant, stubborn, loud, aggressive, or hyperactive. They can also be clingy, shy, whiny, picky, and impossible at bedtime, mealtimes, and in public places. This landmark book has been completely revised to include the latest information on ADHD, medications, and a reassuring approach to all aspects of childhood behavioral disorders.
In this parenting classic, Dr. Stanley Turecki, one of the nation's most respected experts on children and discipline--and himself the father of a once difficult child--offers compassionate and practical advice to parents of hard-to-raise children. Based on his experience with thousands of families in the highly successful Difficult Children Program he developed for Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, his step-by-step approach shows you how to:
Identify your child's temperament using a ten-point test to pinpoint specific difficulties
Manage common--often "uncontrollable"--conflict situations expertly and gently
Make discipline more effective and get better results with less punishment
Get support from schools, doctors, professionals, and support groups
Understand ADHD and other common diagnoses, and decide if medication is right for your child
Make the most of the tremendous potential and creativity that many "difficult" children have

The difficult child book.......2007-09-24
I sent this book to my 2 children and so therefore have not read it myself. They have not read it yet either. A friend who suggested this book raved about it however.
REAL information and conformation.......2007-08-24
I found this book to be very good. Our Pediatrician highly recommend it, and he said he used with one of his sons many years back. I'm grateful he turned me onto this book. It lays out several areas of strong-willed children and they different types of "triggers" that set different children off. I really believe it addresses all of it. Not only did I see my own difficult child's behavior in this book, I saw friends and other family children's behaviors in this book too.
It discusses relationships as well as how parents carry the burden of raising strong willed children. It also helps you to determine the "degree" or "level" of strong willed your child is, as it compares to the most mild, to the absoulte most difficult.
Its a great tool and support of confirmation and options. I highly recommend this book.
This book has been a savior.......2007-02-12
My sister-in-law had the library hold this book for me and it has saved me! Three weeks ago, I was to the point where I could no longer stand to be around my 5 year old daughter. I was upset about her behavior and my reactions to her behavior 24 hours a day. It didn't matter if I was with her or not. I dreamt of running away and even leaving my husband if necessary to get relief from her! We were having MAJOR battles everday. Screaming and yelling and no forms of discipline were working. I had to call a crisis team once and had to have my husband come home from work a few times to 'save her life". He came home on Jan. 23 and I went right to the library. I got the difficult Child and the Explosive Child. I am almost done with the difficult child and my life has changed! We are in counseling and I talked to her pre-k teacher and between the 3, I have learned many new techniques and realize that pinishment just dosen't work with my child and I had to let it go. you definitely need to be willing to change how you think and deal with to make changes within yourself to help to change your child. I have realized through Dr. Turecki that my child can't help alot of these behaviors and I understand her so much better now! i don't take it personally and I try to look at it from the outside. It is still a challenge but I am more willing to understand and help her and redirect her than I ever was before. I find it so helpful the way he taught me to say to her, " I know it's hard for you to pay attention right now but......." instead of "what is wrong with you?" like I had been been doing. I was feeling like a failure as a mother and like I couldn't take her anywhere and now I feel empowered with new tools to use and like I really can help her and myself! Thank god for this book, this man and all others whoo work hard to help us parents! Right now this book is my bible and I'm not even done with it. I love to be around my daughter again and can hardly beleive how miserable I was just a few short weeks ago! We are on defintely on the right path now and I will always refer back to this book! i'll review the explosive child after I read that one!
Recommended Reading!.......2006-05-04
This would be a good book for all parents. If you read this while your child is still an infant, you will save a lot of frustration for yourself as well as your child.
Temperamental Difficulties.......2006-04-06
The Difficult Child is a self-help book for the parents of children with difficult temperaments. While all children have characteristic behavioral quirks, temperaments are so deep-seated that they manifest in infancy and are usually retained for a lifetime. Since temperaments can be inherited, they are probably linked to specific genes. In fact, one behavioral trait -- high activity level -- in mice seems to be associated with a specific gene (along with other characteristics), but such traits have not yet been genetically identified in humans.
This book concentrates on nine particularly difficult temperaments: high activity level, distractibility, high intensity, irregularity, negative persistence, low sensory threshold, initial withdrawal, poor adaptability, and negative mood. A child who exhibits some or all of these temperamental characteristics is usually not the child that the parents expected and therefore can be difficult to handle properly.
High activity level is obviously wearisome for the parents, babysitters and other caretakers. Distractibility is often irritating since the child can't stay with one thing very long. High intensity refers to habitual loudness, which causes its own problems. Irregularity refers to confused circadian rhythms, which means the child is often not ready to eat or sleep at any fixed time. Negative persistence refers to lengthy whines and tantrums, drawing out every disagreement to the point of absurdity. Low sensory threshold refers to physical sensitivity to clothing, noises, colors, tastes and other sensory stimuli, leading to definite likes and dislikes. Initial withdrawal refers to timid reactions at first to new things. Poor adaptability refers to difficultly changing activities, clothing, or even locations. Negative mood refers to grumpiness, showing little or no cheerfulness.
These temperamental types are particularly difficult for parents to understand or manage. At first the parents believe something is wrong with the child, particularly when the child cries at odd times, stays up late, and so forth. When their pediatrician states that nothing is wrong with the child, except maybe a little colic, the parents are mystified when this behavior continues for months and years.
First, these temperaments are normal, although not extremely common. They do not indicate any defect or disease in the baby, just different ways of responding to the world. Once these differences are identified, they can be managed. Moreover, the child can be trained to control these traits to some extent by learning good habits. However, these temperaments are part of the child and so the child would be more comfortable in surroundings where these temperaments are known, expected, and allowed a certain amount of free rein.
Of course, there are various ailments that can produce similar behavior patterns. Some of the more common are touched on within this book. However, the authors assume that you will have already had your child examined by a qualified pediatrician, will continue to take your child for regularly scheduled checkups, and will bring any subsequent problems to his attention. If you always keep him informed, you can let the doctor worry about such things.
Read this book. Even if none of this sounds like your child, read the first chapter of the book; you will learn a lot about your own child, despite their lack of difficult temperament. However, if any of these temperaments fits your child, read the whole book and have your spouse do so also. If nothing else, this book will give you some of the right questions to ask your pediatrician the next time you corner him in his office.
Once you have read this book, you will want to find out more about temperament and human differences. This book is only the first step in the rest of your career as parents. And as grandparents.

Book Description
There's a whole world of flavor packed into an eighty-plus-square-mile area surrounding the cities of Charleston and Savannah. It's called the Low Country of South Carolina.
For centuries, Low-Country cooks have taken the diverse foods of Africa, France, Spain, and the Caribbean and turned them into one of the most intriguing regional cuisines.
Marvin Woods, chef/owner of Diaspora Foods in Charlotte, North Carolina, offers a new take on this extraordinary cuisine. By incorporating these international flavors with contemporary techniques, he stays true to the roots of the original dish, yet creates new flavors that are innovative and delicious. With the sure hand of a seasoned chef, Woods transforms standards like fried chicken and gumbo into updated dishes for today's kitchen. Try his Southern-Exposed Fried Chicken; it's fried, then baked, for crispy, greaseless results. His Vegetable Gumbo is light, flavorful, and satisfying. There's everything from Bourbon-Soaked Pork Chops and Barbecued Short Ribs to Pan-Seared Pompano and Southern Summer Ratatouille.
Rice, South Carolina's great contribution to the American culinary melting pot, takes center stage in Crab and Shrimp Pilau and Five-Greens Rice. You'll also find recipes for the ultimate Southern classics--biscuits and cornbread--along with sensational desserts such as My Favorite Mini Mud Pies and Praline Bread Pudding.
But The New Low-Country Cooking is much more than a great cookbook. Woods shares historical tidbits on how dishes and ingredients got their names, where they originated, and the indisputable importance of African-American cooks in Southern life.
The New Low-Country Cooking hits a high note in American regional cuisine.
Customer Reviews:
everyday comfort food with perfect flavor!.......2007-03-16
an excellent cookbook on a regional cuisine. excellent and accurate choice of recipes (although i wish there were more chicken dinner ones). these recipes are perfect for flavorful basic meals. this is without question the book i use most, especially for sunday dinner. i have passed along the mac/cheese recipe to dozens of folks. the smothered chicken recipe is a staple in our house. try the butternut squash succotash or the spiced apple pie or the stewed chicken. they're can't miss and delicious
the food in this collection isn't fancy or fussy, but it is very very good. this book is best suited for everday folks who have cooking and eating as an integral part of daily home life.
Southern cooking with a real flair.......2007-01-20
This is one of my favorite cookbooks, especially after spending a summer in Charleston last year. I was raised on very traditional southern cooking, and I was looking for something that added a bit of gourmet flair to traditional recipes (and made them a bit healthier). This cookbook does it beautifully, and has a lot of nice background on low country cooking, food traditions, and history. The collard greens and gumbo recipes are just spectacular. I like too that there are basic recipes for things like hoppin john and plain old rice. No pretty pictures, but the volume of recipes more than makes up for it.
If you are looking for something reminiscent of your grandma's cooking in the fifties, with lots of fatback and crisco, you won't find it here. But I think this is a much tastier, healthier turn on my favorite little bit of southern food.
Nice but ....uninspired........2004-11-18
I was eaagerly awaiting the delivery of this book and was disappointed. The recipies were little more than re-hashing some basic carolina cooking. Nothing innovative or even interesting.
I was hoping for more.
Not Authentic Soul Food.......2003-07-08
I really disliked this coobook because it did not capture the real way people of the south cook. I am born and raised in the south and this is nothing like the food you get from big momma's house. There is absolutly nothing "gourmet" about true soul food. You use what you have to make a great meal. It is not about splurging on items that you would not normally have on hand. You use what you have to make a meal. Thanks for the effort though...
Artful simplicity at it's best.......2003-06-22
This is a wonderful cookbook, with all the southern cookbooks out there this has to be the simplest one I've used that delivers southern food with a gourmet touch BUT without the complications that gourmet recipes sometimes present to the home cook. DELICIOUS, DELICIOUS

A wonderful Collie book!!.......2002-02-26
I thought this book was great. It was packed with a whole lot of information for such a tiny book. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a collie!! It has everything.. from grooming to little specifics about the breed. This is definately one of the best books to have as part of any dog manual collection!!
A must read for new Collie owners.......2001-12-03
As a previous dog owner, but new to the Collie breed, I found this book very helpful. Collies are just "different" from other dogs, and their care and training has to be treated as such. Information included in this book was a huge help to me as a new collie owner. If you've never had a collie before and are thinking of adding one to your family, buy this book.
Not worth the paper it's printed on........2001-05-10
This book has very little information for someone who already understands how to take care of any dog. Don't waste your money.
Collies are cool.......2001-04-02
this is a pretty good book. I learned a lot from it. It really helps you learn about collies before you get one. I wouldn't have known how to take care of my collie if i wouldn't have read the book. It's a good buy and if you want a collie you should buy this book. It will help a lot.
A Necessary Manual for Collie Owners, New and Experienced.......2000-06-19
What a delightful experience to read this little book. It contains information critical to every owner of a Collie, no matter how long the person has had this beautiful breed. Mr. Sundstrom has touched on virtually every aspect of the Collie from heritary health problems to rescue groups dedicated to finding homes for those dogs who have been abandoned or surrendered to Humane Societies. Had this book been available years ago, as a Collie breeder, I would have given one to each puppy buyer.
Congratulations to Hal Sundstrom and to Amazon for making this wonderful rendering available.

Highly Recommended!.......2000-11-04
Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff is a monumental book. The photographs are fully documented with dates, shape numbers, descriptions, measurements, etc. The text is complete with footnotes. It is a beautiful coffee table book as well as a scholarly text. Information relating to identification and the relative rarity of the various types of glass Carder designed is examined in detail making it a "must have" for collectors, appraisers, or anyone with an interest in Steuben glass.

Customer Reviews:
A really great book, worth the price.......2007-05-26
This book covers making boxes with cardstock, plastic canvas, fabric, and other materials. There are some very cute and clever box designs. There are the standard shapes: square, rectangle, hexagon. The inside compartment design of these boxes are very unique. The stitching is classy, handsome, and well thought out. The instructions are clear and concise and explained so that you understand why you are doing something. It's been great being able to create a custom box to hold my needles, threads, and other small items. Even my mother has gotten in on it and will be machine embroidering a fall-down fabric sewing box.
This book is packed full of useful information and great designs. I recommend it if you want to actually make the boxes, not just decorate a pre-made one.

Book Description
While educational travel was extremely popular among early modern Englishmen, the practice attracted extensive public criticism. Rather than examining travel itself, this book explores the vivid public images of educational travellers, their development and popularity, and the fears and prejudices in English society that engendered them. The first part of the book examines the medieval background of English travel abroad, the enthusiasm for educational travel among early modern Englishmen, and the progress of the public debate over the practice which essentially started with the publication of Ascham's The Scholemaster in 1570. The second part of the book examines each of the seven major images of the educational traveller: the Italianated traveller; the atheistical traveller, the Catholic traveller, the morally corrupt traveller, the culturally corrupt traveller, and the foolish and lying travellers.

Book Description
Trattato delle Piante & Immagini de Sacri Edifizi di Terra Santa (Plans and images of the sacred edifices of the Holy Land) is a series of measured (exactly observed) drawings of buildings in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Cairo, executed by Bernardino Amico, a member of the Friars Minor of the Observance, between 1593 and 1597. The work was first printed in Rome in 1610 with engravings by Antonio Tempesta; a second edition, extensively revised by the author, was published in Florence in 1620 with etchings by Jacques Callot. Since the second edition represents the author's final version of the text, it is the natural choice for reproduction here.
Although the tradition of drawing the Christian holy places stretches back at least to 685 AD, the modern era in illustration properly begins with Amico's drawings; no artist before him aspired to record Jerusalem and its monuments systematically and with topographical precision. Amico sometimes simplifies and alters what he observes, but scrupulously advises the reader of any distortion, as in Chapter XXXII, where he admits to "correcting" the Church of the Holy Sepulchre by substituting round arches for pointed ones.
When the methodological investigation of ancient remains in Jerusalem began in the middle of the nineteenth century, Amico's drawings were especially influential, and many scholars attested to his accuracy. Archaeological excavation in modern times has diminished the utility of the drawings, however, their value in the historical reconstruction of the shrines, and as witnesses to the former state of holy places altered and sometimes destroyed, has not waned.
Commentary by Robin Halwas, searchable English translation.
