Book Description
Florida Grange, Leonard's drop-dead gorgeous lawyer and Hap's former lover, has vanished in Klan-infested Grovetown while in pursuit of the real story behind the jailhouse death of a legendary bluesman's blackguard son. Fearing the worst, Hap and Leonard set out to do the kind of investigating the good ole boy cops can't - or won't - do. In Grovetown they encounter a redneck police chief, a sadistic Christmas tree grower, and townsfolk itchin' for a lynchin'. Add to this a dark night exhumation in a voodoo graveyard, a thunderstorm of Biblical proportions, and flat-out sudden murder. Hap and Leonard vow to face the hate and find Florida, even if Leonard has to put a hole in anyone who gets in the way. Besides, they've packed a lunch.

Classic Lansdale.......2007-08-07
Lansdale delivers another fine novel featuring Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, one of the oddest (and toughest) couples in mystery fiction. Hap, straight and white, and Leonard, gay and black, travel to Grovetown, Texas, a city that makes Johannesburg look like a bastion of racial unity. They are searching for Hap's ex-girlfriend Florida Grange, last seen there. Wisecracking all the way (even when they're getting the s**t kicked out of `em), the boys stir up a hornet's nest, and in the process learn some hard lessons about themselves and the nature of their friendship.
Two Bear evoked memories of the best of Robert B. Parker and John D. MacDonald. Parker, because of the dialogue, and MacDonald because of the characterization. Lansdale's characters are real people who can get hurt, even killed-- he really puts them through the wringer. Their adversaries aren't cardboard villains, twirling handlebar mustaches. Menacing and memorable, driven by hate, greed, prejudice, lust and ignorance, these folks are scary because you might meet them in real life.
In short, The Two Bear Mambo is classic Lansdale--a good, tough thoroughly enjoyable book that you will remember long after finishing.
Another Hap and Leonard Hit!.......2007-07-30
Books like these are what everyone should be reading. It's damn near a crime that they aren't, but I guess it makes those of us who ARE fans a special little group.
Lansdale is completely unafraid to do what he has to do to further his stories. That means people you like will die, or turn out to be bad folks. It means you can't get too comfortable and think you know what's going to happen when you settle down with one of Lansdale's masterpieces.
"Two-Bear Mambo" continues the Hap & Leonard friendship: a white heterosexual Democrat and a black homosexual Republican, respectively. The story begins on Christmas Eve, where Leonard is burning down the crackhouse next door for the third time. The two friends are approached by their police buddies and sent on a mission to track down their friend: Florida Grange - Hap's old flame and Leonard's lawyer. Grange was last seen in Grovetown, a real, live throwback to the heavily segregated racist '60's.
Of course, they leave right away, and once again start stirring up trouble and townfolk in the flooded little town. As previously mentioned, no one is ever who you think they are, and things are never what they seem.
Bravo, Lansdale.
Humor with a heavy dose of racism.......2004-06-24
Hap and Leonard just can't seem to keep themselves out of trouble. At the beginning of The Two-Bear Mambo, Leonard is yet again setting fire to the drug dealers' house next door. Their friend Lt. Hanson has to take them in just because, but when Hap's ex-girlfriend -- and Hanson's current squeeze -- Florida Grange goes missing, Hanson agrees to drop the charges if Hap and Leonard will go look for her in Grovetown, a burg in East Texas known for its violent Klan members, and where Florida was last seen.
The Two-Bear Mambo is so far the most unflinching in its portrayal of Southern racism. Grovetown is even worse than I could have imagined and Lansdale does not look away for a moment. Leonard is the obvious target, but Hap's association with him brings him into the fray of violence as well. And as for Florida: well, no one as yet has admitted to even seeing her...
My white Southern guilt was intensified while reading The Two-Bear Mambo; the characters, their ideas, and their violence are all-too familiar from my upbringing. So much so that I could barely even bring myself to read it in public, afraid of what the people around me -- seeing the N-word on nearly every page -- would think I was reading (as if the barely euphemistic title weren't embarrassing enough).
But the trademark Lansdale humor abounds in sarcastic remarks and in the first-person narration of Hap -- whose difference from the author himself seems to be getting less and less. Lansdale has said that he is very comfortable with the voice of Hap and the easy-going prose makes that obvious. Despite my emotional reaction to the book, I look forward to continuing the adventures of Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. I'm glad they can't keep away from trouble; if they did, I'd be reading some other book that isn't nearly as fun.
If you can find it, GET IT!.......2003-08-05
Sad to think this book is already out of print. This one is the third installment of the Hap/Leonard series and picks up where Mucho Mojo left off. The pair rush off to the aid of a friend, but pay the price for their outsize egos as they find themselves in a part of the South where the calendars seem to be set 30 years behind schedule. There are no quick, easy resolutions to be found and the Hap and Leonard at the end of the book are markedly different from the two at the beginning. As always, Mr. Lansdale's keen ability to understand and describe human nature is evident. Highly recommended!
A TOWN'S PURE EVIL ALMOST KILLS OUR TWO HEROES!!!!.......2001-09-12
THE TWO-BEAR MAMBO by Joe R. Lansdale continues the saga of Hap Collins and Leonard Pine where MUCHO MOJO left off. It starts out with Hap arriving at Leonard's house on Christmas Eve night. Blasting out of his friend's home is the music to "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" and Leonard is next door, kicking righteous butt and burning down the neighborhood crack house once again. The police pull Hap and Leonard in, but Lieutenant Marvin Hanson gets them off the hook, provided they do him a small favor. It seems that Hap's old girlfriend, Florida Grange (the one who left him for Hanson) took off to Grovetown, Texas to do an article on a black musician who supposedly hung himself while in the custody of the local police. Florida has suddenly vanished, and Hanson wants Hap and Leonard to pay a visit to Grovetown to see if they can find out anything. The only problem is that this particular Texas town is right out of the fifties and sixties. It's a viper's nest filled with Klansmen, led by Jackson Brown, who enjoy murdering the black folks and seem to be getting away with it. Both Hap and Leonard know that they're going to have their hands full just trying to stay alive as they attempt to investigate Florida's disappearance. Even together, as tough as they are, both men are going to find out that they've bitten off more than they can chew when they take on the populace of Grovetown. They'll find themselves in the middle of free-for-all that would put Billy Jack to shame and come very close to getting beaten to death. Both men will discover true fear for the first time in their lives and have to find a way of dealing with it as their injuries heal, if they want to be able to face each other again, as well as solve the mystery of what happened to Florida when they eventually return to Grovetown to face the evil of its people. THE TWO-BEAR MAMBO will give you a slightly different perspective of our two heroes this time around, making them more flawed and human. As tough as Hap and Leonard are, they're not invincible, and both of them come very close to death as they seek to right a wrong. They will find out things about themselves that will at first be difficult to face; yet, in the long run will make them stronger. Though a part of me knows that these two characters are fictional, the writing is so good that another part of me almost believes that they're real. These are guys that I'd simply love to hang out with, and it's a tribute to the talent of Joe R. Lansdale that he's created such believable characters...characters who are funny, skilled martial artists, almost always unemployed, who have the same kinds of problems with relationships that real people do, and who have a strong sense of honor and justice that gets them into trouble more often than not. Mr. Lansdale is able to do this because he has a unique skill in writing that comes off as being natural and down to earth, but is actually a master craftsman at work. He knows how to make each and every character in the novel come alive in ways I wish other authors could emulate. I never know how each book is going to end; and, quite often, I find myself stunned by who gets killed off. As you can probably tell, the "Hap Collins/Leonard Pine" series has swept me off of my feet in a way that few other books have, and it's one I can highly recommend to any reader who loves novels filled with action, humor, self-reflection, and characters that make you truly believe. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do after I read SAVAGE SEASON and then CAPTAINS OUTRAGEOUS. I wish I could sit down with Hap and Leonard, have a beer, and talk about this particular problem. Of course, I wouldn't get any sympathy from them. In fact, I'd probably have to spend an hour or more listening to their problems!!

PCOS.......2007-04-19
This book has given my daughter and me more info on this disease than any doctor has been able to do. The book has given my daughter encouragement that she can live with this syndrome and that she can make her life better if she takes the metformin and gets her body moving. The info on food has helped sooooooo much. Thank you for this book!!!!!!
Very informative.......2007-02-20
I found this book had a lot of great information about PCOS. I thought I knew a lot about PCOS, but never really understood insulin resistance. The book does a great job explaining in terms that anyone can understand. I am enjoying the recipes and finding that following the meal plan is fairly simple.
Another great book in the New Glucose Rev. series!.......2007-02-12
I've read/own most of the books in the New Glucose Revolution family and have followed a low GI diet since 2004 when I read the original book. I have PCOS and found this one a few months ago and I LOVE this one the best I think out of all of them. I loved that it really targeted WHY a low GI diet works with PCOS, and how you can stop the cycle and bring your hormones in check. I love that they do mention using Metformin in correlation with the diet too and that really made me feel good knowing that they had brought up the medicine too since I do take Met. I've lost over 30lbs. and am still losing and highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with PCOS!
New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS.......2007-02-07
Fantastic book to read for anyone with PCOS. Gave a great insight into PCOS and how to manage it.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!.......2007-01-09
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! I didn't realize how my PCOS and insulin affected my body. By following the principals in the book, I have lost about 10 pounds over the past 6 weeks or so! The principals in the book are easy to follow, and foods recommended to eat are easy to find, cook, and eat!
A definite must for those with PCOS!!

Book Description
This very thorough book on training a protection dog builds from understanding protection work to training, being an agitator, evaluating temperament, and more. Safety is emphasized throughout. It is fun, exciting, compelling reading, even if protection work is not a goal but simply a fascination.
Customer Reviews:
Just enough information to be dangerous..........2005-09-16
This book is a jumble of poorly thought out and untested idea's. The author uses bad examples to try and prove his points, but it isn't hard to see that he literally doesn't know what he's talking about.
It only sells because idiot "sic'em" dog trainers buy it.
Broken Promises.......2005-04-16
Although this book promises an engaging subject, the style of writing, less than exciting stories, and minute passages of actual training knowledge are enough to make one choose to read the tax codes over this waste of paper. The multiple interjected "stories" and comments about alledged events during training, detract from any useful information, which in and of itself is difficult to find. Very disappointing.
Read It!.......2003-06-07
I highly recommend this book in tandem with "Dog Logic". Even if you have zero interest in protection training (and let's be honest--even Joel says it's not something you do from a book!) this book gives valuable insight into how to think "associatively" like a dog does. It's great information to help identify where current problems may have cropped up from, and to help you think ahead to prevent improper associations in your training routine.
A Must Read.......2002-03-16
"Manstopper!" is a must read if you are interested in protection work. Overall this book was a great read. Entertaining yet informative and what I enjoyed the most was the author's obvious love for dogs that surfaced in his work with them and in his writing. It was not a how to guide for training a killer, and anyone who claims they used it as such did not heed the advice given by the author.
Not only did he warn potential manstopper owners of the financial and moral responsinility of owning protection trained dogs, he also warns about training the wrong dog for this work. This is terribly important because most owners assume any German Shepherd, Rottie, or Doberman can do protection work. If I had not bought this book I may have made a big mistake and trained my German Shepherd mix for protection. His temperment was just not right for it but I never knew until I read this.
Very informative........2001-11-28
My husband used this book extensively to train his dog. We both found the book interesting and helpful.

Book Description
And you thought reading humor columns was just silly fun. Reading "but i digress...," Joe Lavin's collection of humor columns, can actually change your life. Where else can you get step-by-step practical advice on how to write a "...For Dummies' book? ("In order to make your reader feel better, try to make fun of smart people. Remember, smart people suck.") Lavin also teaches you to stifle the inner pack rat by moving as much as possible and storing your most useless junk at your parents' house. (Note to self: Make sure my parents don't read this book.) This book also gives Lavin an opportunity for public service work. I'm sure many of you sports fans missed the interview with actress Jennifer Love Hewitt on the 300-hour long Fox NFL Sunday Tostitos Budweiser Prudential Super Bowl Pre-Game Show. Lavin reprints it here, just for you. ("Jennifer, who do you think will win the Super Bowl?" "Um, I really like the Yankees.") "but i digress..." takes on any topic, from trying to move a television across the country to an in-depth review of the Anna Nicole Smith biography Lavin skimmed through while the bookstore was closing. In fact, the funniest columns are the ones about the minor annoyances in life. Lavin finds humor columns in all the little glitches, surprises, and setbacks. He's even spent his time and energy reviewing a web site for people born with the shame and horror of....red hair. As a fellow redhead, I owe my life to Mr. Lavin for his courageous investigative reporting. He'd have written more about it, but he couldn't bring himself to part with the twenty-dollar membership fee. If you aren't familiar with Joe Lavin's work, it's time to get acquainted with the humorist whose web site is visited weekly by over 5,000 fans. "but i digress..." is a great introduction.
Customer Reviews:
Top effort!.......2000-06-23
A healthy, irreverent look at life, the universe and everything. In this case, that covers politics, television, sports and Anna Nicole Smith. Oh, and work. Fits somewhere between Dave Barry and P J O'Rourke on the bookshelf - and not just alphabetically.
From the insanity of shipping a TV set across the states and finding a flat in Boston to the aggravating choice of which channel to watch and which pundit not to believe, these columns deal with the some tougher questions of life. Why take part in exit polls? What was behind 'Furbymania'? Or the museum of bad art? What are the Teletubbies all about? What future for all the pundits released into the wild after the Lewinski episode? As they say in Norway (really, they do) - 'a word in the fog'.
Buy this book. Read it in bits. Keep sane. Join the 'Joe Lavin presidential exploratory committee'!
A very cool book.......2000-06-12
Having been a fan of Joe's since his pre-interet days it was great seeing his work in print once more.
Joe's subtle, sarcastic wit has never failed to make me laugh. The "interesting" way he looks at life, the universe and everything is an inspiration to those of us who have neither his wit or charm.
Bu this book, and buy one for your friends. I promise you that they'll thank you for it.
Buy this book!.......2000-06-08
Having been a fan of Joe's writing since his days at the LSE, reading this book was an absolute pleasure.
His gentle, ironic humour has kept me amused through many a dull situation.
The stories are readable and re-readable. I'd recommend this book to absolutely anyone.
Wonderful!.......2000-06-01
Having read all of the columns already (via the internet), I bought this book mainly as a gift. Imagine my surprise to open up the book and find that they are still as funny as when I read them the first time! I'm going to keep this book and intend to get many more hours of laughter out of it!
Well, I don't know..........2000-03-05
... I've heard his humor described as "weasel-biting" but I don't know much about weasels so I'm not sure if I can agree with that. I do, however, know that it's one of the best humor books that I've had the good sense to throw onto the stack that I haul to the checkout counter of the bookstore. I'd rank it in the top five of my list of "Best Impulse Purchases", perhaps number two, right behind my sparkly green shoelaces. The pieces are short enough to read on the bus and funny enough to make me laugh out loud in public (well, in public transportation anyway).
Joe's got a sneaky sense of humor and, I think, an evil mind and those are qualities that I look for in my humor writers. I think he'd be fun to talk to into the wee hours of the morning (especially given his self-confessed night-owl personality). I can picture it now, I'd be punchy with lack of sleep and he'd just go on being sneaky and evil until I was laughing too hard to breath... he'll be the death of me I tell you.
I can't wait for the next one, bring it on.

Insightful and bleeping hilarious--so, when's the sequel?.......2003-12-06
I love Peter David's writing. Anything with his name on it will get me to read it. His BID articles, with his insight and humor, are at times thought-provoking, and other time roll-on-the-floor funny. An amusing book to those not into comic books, and a must-read for those who are. Hey, Peter--where's BID, Volume II?
A Must-Have for Comic Book Readers.......2002-04-01
A collection of insightful and fiercly witty essays by writer Peter David about the comic industry, he covers mind-boggling issues like why women-starring books don't sell as well as their male counterparts, fanboys and convention behavior, and problems that arise when people who die in comic books always come back in a future issue.
An great, irreverent punch-in-the-gut to a lagging, artistically-comfortable industry even ten years after these essays were originally written.
funny and informative, but a bit out-of-date.......2001-05-28
"But I Digress" is a collection of Peter David's columns for Comic Buyer's Guide, from the early 1990s -- the first few years he wrote the column. Reading them in 2001 creates an interesting time-lapse effect, especially when he refers to the "recent" creation of Image, or the "recently concluded" Gulf War. Some of the columns are a bit dated, while others are more or less timeless; even the dated ones are worth reading, for a glimpse at the comics industry in the early ninties.
David has a marvelous sense of humor, and an eye for stupidity and inconsistency. His columns are entertaining, even when I have very little understanding of his subject matter. (Hey, I was only nine years old when these were current! What did I know back then?) He also explains his subject matter, which is very helpful. Looking back, it's interesting to observe which of his opinions and predictions were accurate and well-founded, and which weren't.
Basically, this is good entertainment, with information about comics writers, artists, publishers, and fans in the early 1990s. It's also a good, though indirect, look at Peter David. I would definitely be interested in a collection of his more recent columns.
A peak inside a "writer of stuff's brain.......2001-05-11
Peter David has been writing a weekly column for Comic Buyer's Guide for years. This is a collection of his columns. There is something here for anyone who's enjoyed his fiction not just his comics. He talks about famous people, movie reviews, comics, Star Trek, TV shows, etc, etc.
It is a wonderful look inside the life of one of the nicest people in Comics.
A joy to read.......1998-08-04
A wonderful and often hysterical collection of essays on comic books, science fiction and Hollywood. This book is an insightful look at pop culture which will make you think about what you read and see, and will crack you up at the same time.

Book Description
Dr Johnson disapproved of parentheses and wouldn't use them; and for three centuries grammarians have argued that they are subordinate, additional, unnecessary, irrelevant, and damaging to the clarity of argument. But for Marlowe, Marvell, Swift, Coleridge, Byron, Browning, Eliot, Geoffrey Hill, and Derek Walcott (to name only poets) parentheses have been emphatic, original, necessary, relevant, and essential to the clarity of argument. They also intensify satire. Dr Lennard offers both a new history of the poetic use of lunulae (the marks of parenthesis) from their first appearance in England in 1494 to the present day, and detailed case-studies of individual poets who exploited lunulae. In combination the historical development of use and the individual's practice in a given period reveal the impact on literary composition of technological, philosophical, and political pressures, and the importance for the reader of regarding punctuation as a resource.
Customer Reviews:
Jewel of Oxford Scholarship.......1999-05-22
To quote Nicholson Baker in The History of Punctuation essay from The Size of Thoughts:
John Lennard's extraordinary recent monograph on the history of the parenthesis [is] gracefully written and full of intelligence, decked out with a complete scholarly apparatus of multiple indicies, bibliographies, and notes, whose author, to judge by the startling jacket photo (shaved head with up-sticking central proto-Mohawk tuft, erring on left ear, wilted corduroy jacket, and over-laundered T-shirt bearing some enigmatic insignia underneath), put himself through graduate school by working as a ticket scalper at Elvis Costello concerts. (A Discussion of Elvis Costello's use of the parenthesis in "Let Him Dangle" figures in a late chapter.)
Bracket Man.......1997-12-23
Following the death of Diana, Princess of Walls, Elton John re-released 'Candle in the Wind'. Book Description

Brief cultural information is supplied for each plant, as well as Dirr's perceptive comments and opinions.
Customer Reviews:
Great Photos and Descriptions.......2007-06-12
Highly recommended for its many lovely photos, sometimes 2 or 3 photos of each species. Also recommended for its loving and detailed descriptions of each species and variety. Unlike many books of this type, there are no planting or pruning instructions, just a catalog of shrubs and trees. Dirr is sometimes quirky in his opinions: for example, he doesn't like the usual varieties of lilacs and honeysuckle (!). He does point out some unusual varieties often neglected. He helped me to identify a bush in my backyard that I've been wondering about for many years as an unusual species of Lonicera.
Honest opinions in addition to great descriptions.......2007-03-12
What makes this book stand out from all of the other encyclopedias describing plants and trees for the gardens is the candid opinions as to the relative merits of specific trees and shrubs. Dirr does not hesitate to extoll the virtues of a particular tree while exclaiming that he would never allow another to set foot in his garden. Equally helpful are the author's comments about his preferences for one cultivar of a particular species of plant, when there may be many cultivars to choose among. The pictures shrubs and trees are also excellent, often showing important plant characteristics (i.e. flowers or bark) in addition to the plant in its entirety.
I've come back to this book more than any other in my garden library over the past several years, and expect to continue doing so.
very good!.......2007-03-09
For starters, my order was shipped in a very timely manner. I received the book much sooner than I expected.
Dirr's Illustrated Encyclopedia is an excellent book! It is very helpful whether you're someone who works in the landscaping/green industry or someone who just admires nature. The descriptions for each plant are very well written and very informative, and the corresponding pictures are wonderful!
A great purchase and well worth the money!
Almost perfect.......2007-03-08
This book is a helpful, but not perfect reference guide. It would have been perfect if it consistently provided a plant's rate of growth, expected life, and the height and width each plant could be expected to reach in a home garden. Also, a greater number of photos of plant subspecies would have made this book more helpful as well.
For instance, I bought a Corkscrew Willow to quickly shade my house in the next five years, while a 100 year old maple tree that is on its way out finally dies. After the maple is down, I will plant a nice long lived oak it the Maple's place.
In the meantime I'd like to know how much growth per year I can expect from the Corkscrew Willow, how long the darn thing will live, and what it will look like. None of this information is available in this book.
I'd also like to know which Oak tree will do best, maybe even in the shade of my maple in the next few years? Which Oak tree will be a real legacy -- long life -- tree? Which Oak tree will produce the least amount of litter? This information is also not available in this book.
good.......2007-02-22
the item when i got it was in very good condition and i was very pleased.

Book Description
This volume contains fifteen articles on the communal, social, and intellectual life of medieval Jewry in Islamic lands. The book is divided into three parts. Part I, `Communities and Their Leaders' is devoted to the old Babylonian center in the East and the Andalusian community in the West. Part II, `Self-Perceptions and Attitudes Towards Others' investigates the ways in which medieval Jews living under Islam viewed their gentile neighbours and expressed their own identity. Part III, `Religious Philosophy, Mysticism, and Spirituality in Islam and Judaism' explores the impact of Islamic thought on the Jewish intellectual tradition. The collection depicts a civilization at once unified and diverse, revealing both consistent patterns of leadership and scholarship as well as distinctively local identities and collective memories.

Book Description
From the early 1960s through the early 70s, Pop Art swept the industrialized world. Iconoclastic, rebellious, and immediately popular, the new movement found its roots in an unprecedentedly prosperous consumer society. Encouraged by galleries and publishers who catered to a new collectors' market, many Pop artists were drawn to the creation of editions on paper and in multiples. 60 vibrant examples by such American icons as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by such European artists as Richard Hamilton, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gerhard Richter, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sigmar Polke, are organized according to the themes of mass media consumer culture, politics, erotica and more. All of the works included herein are from The Prints and Illustrated Books Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, an exceptionally rich repository of such work.
Customer Reviews:
Pop Prints.......2000-05-01
This cataloge of the recent exhibition "Pop Impressions Europe/USA" at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, added immensely to to my understanding of the pop art movement. it makes it evident that pop was a global movement and not solely American. Also, the organization of the book is themeatic, with such catagories as "Mass Media" and "Erotica" helping to clarify the feeling of the time period. "Pop Impressions" is also lavishly illustrated with color reproductions (almost one on every page), a necessity with this art movement.
