Book Description
A teenage girl has been missing from her Montgomery, Alabama, home for six weeks. What’s amazing is other people’s lack of concern. Just one person cares that she’s gone: a spunky amateur sleuth on the sunset end of sixty. Armed with razor-sharp insight, a salty wit, and tenacious faith, MacLaren Yarbrough follows a trail of clues -- a wisp of a hint, a shadow of a lie -- in search of answers to questions that come hot and fast and that grow increasingly alarming.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent start for the MacLaren series. .......2007-07-12
This is one of my favorite mystery series. I have read all of them. Maybe in time Patricia Sprinkle will write more with these characters.
Another excellent book in the series!.......2006-08-11
MacLaren Yarbrough is a delightful character in this well written series that I have just recently discovered. In fact, this series has become my number one favorite because of the quality of the writing.
When Did we Lose Harriet?.......2006-07-28
Interesting read--well written. Keeps you engaged and wanting to know the outcome, and you like the characters along the way.
Excellent Start to the Series.......2006-03-30
In my continuing quest to find authors to satisfy my craving for mysteries, I'm delighted to have found Patricia Sprinkle. The characters are sparkling, the plot twisting, and the flavor of the South fully realized. Enjoy!
Patricia Sprinkle is a very convincing writer.......2005-08-07
I bought this book a couple of years ago. I didn't know who Patricia Sprinkle was at the time. I loved the book, and I loved the way each character is brought to life by Ms. Sprinkle. They all seem so real, like someone you've met, or known before. I also like the way that she put a list of each character's name, and the role that they each play in the story in the front of the novel. That was very convenient. I didn't have to wonder who was who, and who did what. It would be great if all writers would do that in their books.

Amazing.......2005-07-17
I read this book when I was in fifth grade... I just now found it because I had forgotten the name... I mean that was quite a few years ago. This book had made an impression, for the longest time I've tried to remember the title, I kept thinking it was Cherevnog so I'd do searches with it... but my search would come up empty. Finally after nearly 15 yrs I found the book that had caught and kept my attention at such a young age. This was the first and only fantasy novel I had ever read and it captivated me. Great book a MUST read, I will be purchasing a copy for my library.
Tried too hard to be something else........2003-07-16
Cherryh is one of my favorite authors, but this book disappointed me. As a folk tale, or combination of many folk tales, it was interesting, and the exotic, tsarist Russian location was very appealing. I liked the way the author brought together many magical beasts and beings, most of which would be unknown to a Western reader. However, the characters spend too much time arguing, worrying, and talking at each other about their anxieties, and they never really get around to interacting. The theme seemed to be something to do with "be careful what you wish for" but the lesson was lost in the confusion. The bad guys weren't so much evil as conflicted characters, and even they spent a lot of time justifying their actions and feelings to the others. In short, there was just too much talk! Most folk tales have good and evil and the line between them is broad and obvious; but in this book, everyone seemed to be on the same side. It made the story plodding and not much fun to read. I'm not sure whether Cherryh was trying to write a different kind of fairy tale, or had some other target in mind, but she didn't make it work.
This is by far the best series I've read by her........2000-07-26
Chernevog, Rusalka, and Yvengie are the greatest books. I enjoyed the atmosphere. An old-time russian fairy-tale. This series pulled together bits of all folklore I know, and even taught me some things I wasn't aware of. The characters are likeable, even the truely evil ones. You can imagine where they are coming from and why it is they are acting like they are. Perhaps it is a bit predictable, but it's a fairy-tale.
A good read.......1999-12-29
Cherryh sets the book in old Russia and explores the old admonition, "Be careful what you wish for. You may get it." The characters spend much time worrying over unintended consequences of disturbing nature and run afoul of situations and villains as a result. Their indecision is often painful to them and readers alike. The characters are well developed and the story interesting. My only regret is that I can read faster than she writes.
not her best work.......1999-06-30
I had read tripoint, and so bought this book since I had liked the other one. I found chernevog to be virtually unreadable. Perhaps that is why it is out of print, even though she is a popular author. It was boring, and really didnt make much sense. Once in a while it seemes she had a potential plot, or the seeming villian might get interesting, but the she ababndons even that. Skip this one, try tripoint, or stuff in that world.

Book Description
When neurobiologist Elizabeth M. Adler was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she learned everything she could about the disease, both to cope with the emotional stress of being diagnosed and to make sure she made the best possible decisions for her treatment. In Living with Lymphoma, she combines her knowledge of lymphoma -- both scientific and personal -- with the desire to help other patients come to grips with this complex, and often baffling, disease.
Adler thoroughly explains the disease, describing the many different kinds of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the wide range of symptoms, and the various treatment options available. Convinced that understanding lymphoma's biological basis will help patients make better treatment decisions, Adler explains basic cell biology and how the immune system functions. Readers will gain sufficient background to understand and evaluate medical literature, and to ask their physicians questions specific to their own needs.
In the introduction, Dr. Michael R. Bishop of the National Institutes of Health provides a physician's perspective on the delicate nature of doctor-patient relationships in the context of a life-threatening disease -- especially the importance of patient education and open communication in making decisions about treatment options and quality of life.
Drawing on her scientific expertise and personal journey -- as well as her empathy, passion, and humor -- Adler has created a valuable guide for people with lymphoma and the people caring for them.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-08-03
This book is a terrific idea for individuals recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. It provides plenty of very useful and direct information that can help cancer patients make vital life-changing decisions. There is also a very useful glossary and index in the back.
Very helpful!.......2007-05-08
This book was purchased as I was undergoing my own diagnostic procedures after MRI/CT scans showed probable non-hodgkins lymphoma. I appreciated the author's first-person perspective on her experiences, which helped to normalize some of my own. The book offers good, basic descriptions of many of the different lymphomas (lymphomi?) possible, and thoroughly describes the possible treatment options. I found her explanations of chemotherapy types very helpful, making the whole topic less daunting and scary. The chapters that included cell biology, immune system, & genetic basis for lymphoma were tough to read through--but I found these gave great background for understanding what my oncologist is thinking, where he is going with his recommendations, and makes me a more involved patient. This has really helped me to cope with these first weeks/months of my disease, thank you Ms. Adler!
Truly informative.......2007-04-06
Although there are a lot of technical/medical terms, I really enjoyed reading this book. I only wish it was available when I was diagnosed 5 years ago. The book helped explain some terms clearer than my doctors did, or maybe it was because I didn't have to try to remember everything, I could always go back and re-read a chapter or paragraph. I only hope my original treatment was sufficient to "cure" me and I won't need this information again in the future, but it is nice to know it is there and availble to me.
Lymphoma: A must read for the spouse of the cancer patient........2007-04-02
I have heard my husband say to others," I'm living the cancer and that is all I can handle. My wife takes care of the reading." I'm in the process of reading this book, even getting up in the middle of the night to find an answer to a question that I might have regarding my husband's condition; he has non-hodgkins lymphoma. The book doesn't read like a text book, it reads as a first person account. The author diagnosed with this disease tells us what she went through, and has survived many years post-non-hodgkins lymphoma.....I had read portions of this book in the library, went home and ordered from Amazon.com.... Norma J.Johnson
Absolutely Insightful!.......2006-09-03
Dr. Adler shares her experience with Lymphoma. My husband was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. This book tells current and factual information regarding diagnosis, signs & symptoms, side effects & treatment. When I can understand the diagnosis, I don't fear it. I would highly recommend this to anyone with any type of cancer, especially lymphoma. Judith Hafner

Christmas and cookies are synonymous. Extolling that happy truth, Rose Levy Beranbaum's Rose's Christmas Cookies provides a comprehensive selection of 60 cookie recipes for eating and decoration, for keeping and giving, that is probably the last word on the subject. The author of the award-winning The Cake Bible, Beranbaum has applied her passion for precise, foolproof recipes to the pleasurable business of cookie making. Including full-page color photos of every cookie, and more than 50 line drawings of techniques and templates, the award-winning book is both easy to use and a delight to the eye. Novice bakers and old hands alike will enjoy baking from it.
The recipes are arranged in chapters devoted to tree and mantelpiece cookies; cookies to make for and/or with kids; cookies for sending, for open house, and holiday dinner parties, among others. Included are recipes for classics such as Scottish Shortbread, Chocolate-Dipped Melting Moments, Mexican Wedding Cakes, Spritz Butter Cookies, Springerle, and Pfeffernüsse. Also offered are Beranbaum's own creations, such as Maple Walnut Sablé Sandwiches, and those of her friends, like Lora Brody's Christmas Phantoms and Mrs. King's Irresistibles. Where applicable, recipes offer optional mixing methods for food processor or electric mixer (or by hand). Beranbaum's "Smart Cookie" accompanies each recipe and provides hints on ingredients and techniques. Decoration, storage, and cookie-sending information abounds. Concluding with a color-photo-illustrated glossary of ingredients and equipment, the book is encyclopedic on its subject and virtually guarantees Christmas (or any time) cookie-making success. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Since its 1990 publication, Rose's Christmas Cookies has been a phenomenal success. Who can resist Chocolate-Dipped Melting Moments Cookies or moist Mini-Cheesecakes with Lemon Curd . . . or David Shamah's Jumbles, a fabulous cross between a chocolate-chip cookie and a chunky candy bar bursting with raisins, chocolate chips, and pecans. Whether you need a cookie to decorate your tree or grace your mantelpiece (cookies like Stained Glass or Christmas Wreaths), a sweet to send (Mahogany Butter Crunch Toffee, Maple Macadamia Bars), or a special holiday treat for your dinner party (Praline Truffle Cups, Chocolate-Pistachio Marzipan Spirals), you'll find that perfect something here. Complete with 60 cookie recipes and a color photograph of each cookie for handy reference, this easy-to-use and fun-to-read book will result in scrumptious, festive, and splendid-looking cookies every time.
Customer Reviews:
Not waiting for Christmas.......2007-07-17
I bought this book in June and am happily working my way through the recipes. By Christmas, I'll be ready! Most recipes are good for any time of the year.
A must have.......2007-02-10
I love cookie cookbooks and have my share of them. Recently this one was given to me as a gift and I am so pleased with it so far. Each recipe comes with a photo which I love, I wish all books would do that. The recipes are ones that you are sure to actually make not just look at and probably make over and over again. Another nice feature of the book is each page as two methods to making the cookies(food processor and electric mixer)and tips for storing and how long the cookies will keep. Not too shabby!
Rose is the best!.......2007-01-16
I have enjoyed Rose's other baking books because she makes recipes do-able for bakers who have varying levels of knowledge and ability. I love to cook and bake but some cookbooks I've bought along the way seem to go out of their way to make their recipes a bit difficult, or have a snooty approach to ingredients and technique (like...it's practically a crime to re-roll cookie dough scraps!). This book has recipes that any of us can bake, no matter how much experience we have - everything I've ever made has turned out to be attractive AND tasty! A practical, beautifully illustrated book that you'll return to use each Christmas, or whenever you're in the mood to bake cookies. A great gift if you pair it with some cookies you've made yourself!
Best X-Mas Cookie Book.......2006-10-30
I received this book and immediately went to the store to buy the ingredients needed for several of the wonderful recipes. I began with the spritz cookies and they were absolutely delicious (and easy). Beranbaum includes so much instructional information and offers a great assortment of cookie recipes. As a person who recently purchased a lot of cookie books, I highly recommend this one!
a rose is a rose.......2006-03-17
I confess that I find Rose's cookbooks intimidating (she is the woman who chose her husband because he understood her thesis on why sifting was not an adequate way to distribute dry ingredients), but like the Cake Bible this is a tremendous resource for a cookie baker. Don't expect all the standards here, but some new and even challenging cookies.

Fills a gap for doll collectors.......2007-09-23
Being in the doll business ourselves, and specializing in ethnic dolls, (PattycakeDoll.com) we are always looking to find books with information in this category. This book fits the bill perfectly. Great pictures, large format, lots of countries. Nice feature is they often have photographs of people in their native costumes to compare to the doll's dress.
Extremely nice-looking and well-informed.......1999-02-03
The only book I have ever found about folk dolls only. The pictures are great, the information about dresses is complete. My only wish is to find the same kind of book about more "modern" dolls. This book mostly deals with dolls from museums and does not give many tips about where to find good folk dolls today. Looking forward to reading Volume2!

A SURPRISING LOOK A SOME SELDOM SEEN PRINTS.......2007-03-31
I came across this book at a 2nd-hand bookstore back in 1992 for $13.00 and it remains one of my favorite Remington volumes.
The main review mentions a 'disjointed text' but I do not notice nor agree with that opinion. There is nothing 'weak' about this book for any reader who enjoys Remington everything in this book should please.
I have a couple good Remington prints hanging in the family room, and until this book, could not come up with names for them nor much history concerning them. It is sometimes amazing just how much Remington is available but has remainded unseen by most readers. But thanks to this volume many seldom seen or never seen prints will be put before the interested reader. And since Mr. Remington, during one of his depression periods, saw fit to later burn most of these prints, this is not only the first book to publish the complete prints, but outside of being seen in this book, since they no longer exist, this is the only place they can be seen.
Again, thanks to Peggy and Harold Samuels, another book about Remington showing "the first definitive collection" of prints is now available. These two authors-authorities of western art have given us a new and fresh approach to some of Remington's western art.
Not only a good 'coffee table' book but one also excellent for your western art shelf as well.
Recommended.

Book Description
The most meaningful support for multiculturalism has come from intellectuals, such as those represented in this book, who have discovered greater meaning about our American past by incorporating the concepts driving multiculturalism. These essays engage the word and its meanings, as varied as they are, in an effort to add and expand on the dialog for this ever increasingly vital concept.
