lots to enjoy, except the title.......2005-10-02
any story that opens with a buffalo in a suburban front yard has a lot going for it. sprinkle has a great way with a phrase, her characters are well drawn, there's good dialogue, but this otherwise decent mystery got three stars because the title gives away a major piece of the puzzle. and also because an important clue is actually waved in the reader's face.
i enjoyed the author's first series (_murder at buckhead_, and others) so i know the author has done better and will read at least one other title in this series in the hopes that it will be up to her previous standard.
down home regional mystery.......2004-06-02
In the town of Hopemore, Georgia, MacLaren's day gets off to an unusual start when she sees a buffalo munching on the grass in the yard of her new house. By the time she finds the courage to go outside and get the animal away from her rose bushes, she has the second shock of the morning. Her college boyfriend Burlin Bullock, the one her husband Joe Ridley doesn't know about, is explaining to her that the buffalo is a symbol of his son's run for governor.
MacLaren would like to leave Hopemore for the week that the Bullocks are in town but business prevents her from doing so. She gets to see Burlin more than she would like. A homeless person who is following the Bullocks on the campaign trail is found murdered and circumstantial evidence points to a person that MacLaren knows is innocent and plans to prove it. The real killer, whom fears that MacLaren will figure out the truth, decides to kill her.
This down home regional mystery gives readers a sprinkle of small town deep south living, customs and mannerisms. The protagonist is a judge who does more to solve crimes than to render judgments on them. Patricia Sprinkle knows how to write a charming and quaint mystery without resorting to blood, gore or on stage violence of any kind. WHEN WILL THE DEAD LADY SING? is a great installment in a winning series.

The Last Wizard.......2001-04-20
A wonderful culmination to a solid series. After following Wydrune, Kira, Billy, and Modred through numerous victories and losses, it was nice to understand a little more about the insight of one of Hawke's most ingenious characters. The comedy and drama added to each story by Makepeace is brought into a much larger realm as he is lifted from a supporting role to the man that the plot revolves around. The series has always left me with a want of more, and I'm just happy that, after all has been written, there is nothing more to say. Thank you Mr. Hawke.
Another good read.......1999-02-24
The Wizard of... series has been a great concept from the beginning. This is another in an interesting storyline. Kudos to Simon.
Wonderful Book!.......1998-09-06
I have read many books in the Wizard of 4th Street series, and find this one to contain the same wonderful humor and seriousness that is prevelant through the whole series. My only complaint with this book is that it seems to start a little slow. Maybe the slowness was part of the plot device, but overall, I felt this took away from the book. The ending, though not completely surprising, has a few twists one would never expect. Again, overall a really wonderful book, following in the footsteps of the rest of the series...

exelent book.......2005-12-15
I love this book. I read it a while a go, and I have been trying to find more in the series for a long long time, but it isn't in any library I can find. This is a great book, a greater series, and I would highly recomend it to anyone who wants to snuggle up to a great book and relax.

Unknown to them both the worlds greatest assasin Moprheus wants these gems as well. Unlike those going to steal them he intends to buy them. All seems to be going to each others plan until the true maddness happens. I won't give to much of this wonderful novel. I read these in high school and loved them. If you can find a copy of this book read it.
It draws you in..........1999-04-30
I am not much of a book reviewer. I just know what I like and I really liked this book and all the books that follow in the series (I think there were 7) and even the spin-off novel from The Wizard of Santa Fe called Cats Eye Gomez.
If you enjoy a creative twist in your reading then you will find Simon Hawke's books are a joy to read.
I just wish I could find his books somewhere so I could share them with my friends and nephew.
A nice book to spend a couple of hours with........1998-11-05
Can you imagine Merlin, Modred and Morgan in Boston or New York in the year 2200? The usual power sources have been depleted and now the world runs on magic as some run on java. Experience the adventure of Wyrdrune, Kira and a couple of other characters in a world once again full of magic and see the first experience with the dark ones after eons. Definitely a book worth reading.
The first in a series of "not to miss" adventures........1998-07-10
Enter Simon Hawke's world, where magic works and a reluctant magician named Wyrdrune is thrust into the dark world of necromancy. Simon Hawke paints a clear picture of the characters and the situation, reminiscient in some ways of Piers Anthony's fantasy works, but with a darker edge.
Hawke starts the series with the Wizard of 4th Street and continues it in several other books. Each worth reading. If you enjoy fantasy, you'll like this series. It's Ursla K. LeGuinn's Wizard of Earth Sea - meets Pier's Anthony's Xanth Series.

Excellent Escapism.......2001-04-02
"The Nine Lives of Catseye Gomez" was the first book of Simon Hawke that I read, and I was so amazed by the storyline and the writing that I went to every used bookstore I could find to try and get my hands on the entire series. "The Wizard of Whitechapel" is the second book in the series, following "The Wizard of 4th Street," and it is well worth your time if you enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and/or creativeness. It had more of a horror twist in it that its predecessor, but it was just as good. In a conclusion which I'm sure is not necessary, get this book and all the others in the series, as well as some of his other works. You (probably) won't regret it.

The Wizard of Sunset Strip.......2001-04-20
Of all the books in the Wizard of 4th Street Series, this one hits a little closer to home due to it's content. The basic premise is the same and as usual very interesting, it keeps you going until the end. What makes this book different though is the use of places that might be a little more familiar to most everyone within the US. From the idea of a character working in the film industry, to our killer stalking the Sunset Strip to the final battle that takes place at....Of course I won't tell you, but let me just say it's the happiest place on earth. Simon Hawke has written a marvelous story to add to his marvelous series.

pretty good layman's med encyclopedia.......2007-08-09
Has a little info about a lot of conditions and a lot of info about a few conditions. Good for the average consumer. And you just can't beat the price!
the merck manual.......2007-06-10
The book came promptly and in good condition....I put in the order for a 2004 version but got a 2003 version..there's probably not much difference. The only thing I don't like about the book is that you really can't look up what a symptom means only sometimes...you really have to look up an illness and see if your symptom is there otherwise this book is a book of rich medical information
Best Yet for any Medical Helps.......2007-05-31
My son encouraged me to buy this Manual as I had been hospital with an A-Fib. When I had to return to the Dr. he was pleased that I was prepared
with knowlege and good questions concerning my health issue. Since then
I have had to use the Manual for health issues for other members
of my family. The Manual will be a best part of our library and with the
briliant color red it is always easy to find.

Merck Manual of Medical information.......2007-05-07
Excellant Medical referrence Manual. Subject items are well written and easy for the layman to understand. Every home should have one.
The Best on the Market.......2007-04-28
Hands down, this is the best comprehensive medical reference product for a non-medical user. Merck has a 100 years of reputation for quality publications behind them, and this one does not disappoint. Clear style, perfect organization, I really could not find any flaws with it. And since Merck sells their manuals on a non-profit basis, the price of this book cannot be surpassed. Excellent value.

All cooks need a repertoire of easily prepared sauces and gravies. How to Make Sauces and Gravies provides succinct instruction for producing one. In fewer than 100 pages it offers illustrated, step-by-step directions for preparing classic and contemporary sauces and gravies--recipes, tips, and information that all cooks can use.
Beginning with a discussion of sauce basics that explores deglazing, reducing, and thickening, the book then provides recipes, with variations, for skillet sauces, chicken jus, turkey gravy, and more. Thus, for example, a master recipe for herb skillet sauce is followed by variants that include Lemon Caper Skillet Sauce and Fresh Tomato and Basil Skillet Sauce. Also included are exemplary recipes for mayonnaise, hollandaise, and barbecue sauces and Asian-inspired recipes like Hoisin Sesame Dipping Sauce. Throughout, underlying techniques are explored and illustrated (pan-sauce preparation is a good one), and sensible tips abound (when chopping garlic to make a purée, occasional pressure on the mixture with the side of knife speeds the process, for example).
A true primer, the book is part of the Cook's Illustrated Library series. Like the magazine, the books are dedicated to presenting tried-and-perfected recipes and cooking techniques in a concise, approachable way. --Arthur Boehm

How do i get this book?.......2006-11-10
I have been looking for this book! I ordered it from Amazon but they could not send it to me. You can buy it at Sur La Table but you have to buy a cooking pan with it! I just want the book!
Wonderful Book.......2005-11-14
Don't let its humble appearance fool you, this is a great book on sauces and gravies. True to Cook's Illustrated's methodology, the book gives background testing info and the best recipe. Cook's prefers recipes that are quick and flavorful and this book follows suit. If you are looking for a tradional simmer-all-day type of sauce, this is not the book for you. My only complaint is that there is only one recipe for barbecue sauce -- a Kansas City style sauce. I also enjoy vinegar-based sauces, so that was a little disappointing.

Interesting, but too theoretical.......2007-09-10
The book is well written and consist of a wealth of knowledge about the breed. Unfortunately it is to theoretical and not as practical as I hoped it would be. Also the pics are dull and in black and white and doesn't give the book an attractive feel to it. Also some chapters in the book are useless information unless u plan to write a thesis about the first dogs in the line. Overall some useful info. in this book but will not consider it to be the ultimate book to describe Alaskan malamutes
Most important book for a potential or current Mal owner.......2007-05-06
We bought this book shortly after it first came out and from that point forward we have purchased copies for anyone who has gotten one of our puppies. We feel strongly that along with our mentoring new owners, this book provides a resource for them to understand their dog. Bobbie Brooks has done an outstanding service to our breed with this book!

The only/best resource for Hallmark Collectibles.......2001-01-15
This is the best (if not only) resource to use for Hallmark collectibles. The color pictures are invaluable and the index makes it easy to find what you're looking for. I purchase a new book each year and reference my copy at least 3-4 times a week. The only 'negative' comment I can make is that the secondary market prices on many of the ornaments seem to be quite high - compared to what you can purchase them for on sites such as ebay. But many of them are 'right on' and it gives you a great idea of what is/isn't hot.
Best Hallmark Ornament Guide.......2000-07-28
I have been collecting ornaments since 1991 and this is the best collectors guide I have ever owned. It lists all ornaments with color photos and current value. It even lists very rare expo and hard to find pieces. A must have for collectors!
The Best book to use to value your Hallmark Ornaments.......2000-07-26
Each year I get a new CheckerBee Value Guide. They are the best - very easy to use and full of good information. Great index in the back to find your ornament if you know the name. The book is divided by years so if you know the year of the ornament - you can look for it's picture. They also have the series all together so when I'm shopping on line - I know what the going amount is for each ornament. It also has a section in the back to list all your ornament by year. A real five star book!
The Best Of CollectorBee Publishing.......2000-07-05
This book is very easy to use, and fun to use. It is all stocked up with todate information that todays collectors want. There are color photos of every piece that Hallmark has put on the market. This is a must have for any Hallmark collector. It's also great for a person who is just starting thier collection. This book will tell collectors whats popular and whats not.
Always can depend on Collector Bee to fullfill my needs.......2000-06-28

Book Description
During the last forty years there has been a remarkable resurgence in interest by 16th-century historians in the Strasbourg Reformer, Martin Bucer (1491-1551). The components and originality of his thoughts and his actions, as well as the reality of his ideas are emerging more and more. This is largely due to the new edition of his works undertaken by an international committee, established in 1952. This edition is divided into three sections: Opera Latina (of which 5 volumes have appeared since 1953 : vols. 1-3, 15 and 15 bis); Deutsche Schriften (10 volumes since 1960: vols. 1-6, 3, 7 and 17); Correspondance (vol. 1, 1979). The present second volume of the Correspondance (1524-1526) essentially covers five themes: 1) the controversies with the Roman church, 2) the evangelical propaganda, especially in the Roman speaking countries, 3) the sacramentarian dispute and the search for reconciliation, 4) the Peasant war and 5) the beginning of the anabaptist crisis.

Book Description
The gunmen rose from the crowd and set their sights on Malcolm X. The thunder of shotgun blasts ripped through the ballroom, and Betty Shabazz turned to see her husband float backward, keel over and crash to the ballroom stage. She grabbed her children, hurling them beneath a booth and shielding them with her body while the room erupted into screams and chaos. As she lay there squeezing her family, the Betty Shabazz who was the dutiful and obedient wife of the Civil Rights Movement's most feared leader ceased to be, and the woman who emerged would become one of the greatest heroines of our day.
Betty Shabazz, Surviving Malcolm X is the first major biography of Dr. Betty Shabazz, the unsung and controversial champion of the Civil Rights era. From her early marriage to black liberation's raging voice through her evolution into a powerful and outspoken African-American leader, Betty Shabazz was in constant struggle to bring freedom and justice to her people. Yet, at times her greatest fight was to struggle through tragedy and hold on to her faith amidst the stereotypes forced on her by a culture of racism and the very people she was trying to liberate.
To read Betty Shabazz, Surviving Malcolm X is to experience this remarkable life. With eloquent and intimate prose, Russell J. Rickford puts you on the scene as a young Betty Sanders is taken in by foster parents after a troubled childhood. You are there as Malcolm X comes home from a hard day of railing against oppression to hug his children, dote on his wife and laugh. You dive under the table at the Audubon Ballroom as bullets strike Malcolm down. You struggle with Betty Shabazz as she fights to raise six girls alone while earning a doctorate. You stand triumphant with her as she claims her own individuality and fights to build respect for Malcolm. And you stand watch with her daughters as Betty passes away, a victim of yet another tragedy, but this time after a life lived full.
Russell J. Rickford has conducted extensive research to compile this biography, interviewing more than seventy of Betty Shabazz's family members, friends, colleagues and contemporaries as well as researching countless records and documents, including recently declassified FBI, CIA and New York Police files. This is the first complete look at the life of Betty Shabazz and a new insight into the man who was known as Malcolm X.
Betty Shabazz is the story of a strong woman who faced incredible tragedy and emerged triumphant, compassionate and always full of life. In the end, it is the story of a nation torn apart by hatred learning to heal and forgive.

Betty Shabazz.......2007-05-15
I have yet to read this book. But the book is in good condition.
A must read!!!.......2005-10-03
I received the book two weeks ago and finished it in four days. This is a well written, very informative insight into the life of Dr. Shabazz. She was a powerful woman, who did her best to protect her daughters from the evils of the world. Some might say that she sheltered them to much, but who can tell a mother that she's being overprotective of her babies? Against all odds she survived, her support system was outstanding, her vision was remarkable. I enjoyed every moment of this book.
Quite Informative,revealing, and historical.......2005-07-30
This book is not only an informative and revealing biography of one of America's hero's, Dr. Betty Shabazz. This is also a historical biography of a remarkable woman. Most informative is the likeness and kinship many woman can identify with especially struggling mothers, aunts, and grandmothers who find themselves trying to raise young boys alone. Often without the assistance of fathers, grandfathers, and positve male role-models.
Hers not only is the story of being Mrs. Malcolm X, Dr. Betty Shabazz, but also tragically grandmother/mother/counselor to our often time rebellious and misunderstood young black males searching for their fathers and father figures.
But in the mist of this tragic situation her family can and must relish in the life of this remarkable, remarkable Queen Mother Betty.....
Mr. Rickford gives us just that in this important piece of literature.
