Book Description
Los Angeles, 1958. Killings, beatings, bribes, shakedowns--it's standard procedure for Lieutenant Dave Klein, LAPD. He's a slumlord, a bagman, an enforcer--a power in his own small corner of hell. Then the Feds announce a full-out investigation into local police corruption, and everything goes haywire.
Klein's been hung out as bait, "a bad cop to draw the heat," and the heat's coming from all sides: from local politicians, from LAPD brass, from racketeers and drug kingpins--all of them hell-bent on keeping their own secrets hidden. For Klein, "forty-two and going on dead," it's dues time.
Klein tells his own story--his voice clipped, sharp, often as brutal as the events he's describing--taking us with him on a journey through a world shaped by monstrous ambition, avarice, and perversion. It's a world he created, but now he'll do anything to get out of it alive.
Fierce, riveting, and honed to a razor edge,
White Jazz is crime fiction at its most shattering.

Better through reputation than by substance, but it's still okay.......2007-06-13
"White Jazz" is the fourth and final installment of James Ellroy's L.A. Quartet of novels, with "The Black Dahlia," "The Big Nowhere," and "L.A. Confidential" preceding it respectively.
While The Black Dahlia and L.A. Confidential are naturally more well-known to mass audiences because of their film adaptations, The Big Nowhere holds its own as an example of -- to plagarize the critcs -- "hard-boiled, no-nonsense 1940s-50s corruption and decadence." White Jazz is an okay book, and the same kinds of language and style are found here too, but it just isn't as good as the other three. I think White Jazz is passable, but it may have acquired the status of "classic" based on the greatness of the other three rather than on the strength of its own qualities.
Each of the three novels preceding White Jazz gets increasingly difficult to read, with fewer and fewer connecting words and phrases, and often resorts to stream-of-consciousness tactics a la Virginia Woolf, albeit on a more profane and graphic level. If one were to read out loud, for example, excerpts from L.A. Confidential or The Big Nowhere with no previous experience reading Ellroy's work, that person might encounter some difficulty with adapting themself to his style of writing. To read out loud from White Jazz without familiarizing one's self with the almost incoherent writing style may result in the reader sounding like they're muttering a lot of violent and racist gibberish. Needless to say, the LA Quartet isn't for everybody, even if people really thought and spoke the way Ellroy portrays in the 40s and 50s..
White Jazz isn't as good as the previous three novels, in my view, for three main reasons:
1- its story doesn't sound as original as the others; it seems like slight rehash of Ellroy's earlier storylines, and the whole incest angle strikes as inherently repulsive rather than locally grotesque
2- it is even harder to read than his earlier novels, making it a somewhat laborious experience
3- the story -- what there is of it -- just isn't as engaging as the plots of the previous three books
I read "The Black Dahlia" in only a few days, same with The Big Nowhere, but I keep finding myself setting White Jazz down because it just doesn't grab my attention like Ellroy's other books. That's about all I can say about this book without spoiling plot points, so I'll just end with the advice that if you're an Ellroy fan (like I am) you'll probably find things to enjoy about this book, but it's harder to read, and therefore you might have to invest more effort into simply understanding what's going on. Whether or not it's worth it, is up to the individual reader.
Looking forward to reading this novel........2007-02-07
I have read two of his books and look forward to this one.
A Jazz-inflected Tour De Force.......2007-02-05
I am relatively new to James Ellroy. I read Ellroy's Black Dahlia and thoroughly enjoyed it. The man knows how to tell a story.
I was definitely interested in checking out more Ellroy so I bought White Jazz. At first I was a bit discouraged because the writing somewhat mimics the scat stylings of jazz music, voice or otherwise. The writing is all over the place and zigs here and zags there and morphs into different time frames at the blink of an eye. There is not too much in the way of nouns, adjectives, or even verbs for that matter. This is no doubt a read the requires focused attention. I mean really focused attention.
It took me a couple of tries to read this book. I would start it and then lose my focus. I had to keep at it in order get the rhythm of the book. I eventually tuned into the timber and beat of the book and was able to go with the flow of the book. Once you get to that point, you will find this a really engrossing read. You wouldn't think that this book would be vivid given its stylized writing but the author delivers a visually stunning read as well.
I won't even go into plot points here because there are quite a few but I did find the main character David Klein to be really interesting and was definitely interested in reading what he would do next.
Some people will be put off by the rather frank use of racial and socially deplorable epithets but realize that Ellroy is writing as people were likely to be and to speak. It's an ugly but probable reflection of life in L.A. in the late 50's. But I won't lie, it took some getting used to.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book in all of its rawness and am sure other peoples would too!
Enjoy!
An new classic in a genre that appeared tapped-out........2006-10-31
Plenty of other reviewers have recapped and given you a sense of the book, so all I will say is that "White Jazz" may be one of the best books written in the last twenty years (Right up there with "White Noise" by Don DeLillo). It is most certainly worth reading but if you haven't read anything by Dashiel Hammett, Chandler, or the other hard-boiled writers, then you really arent getting all the fun out of Ellroy's novel. It's much more than a great police detective story. "White Jazz" takes the genre's terse and pointed style to a ridiculous extreme. I burst out laughing at some of the passages and how the style played into the frantic stream-of-consciousness narrative. It's a fun read - definitely recommended!
Is there a plot?.......2006-03-22
This novel is totally "stream of consciousness." It jumps around through past and present. It's impossible to follow any kind of coherent plot. I had enjoyed the movie "LA Confidential" and thought I wanted to read Ellroy. I was mistaken!

Great but short.......2007-01-09
I absolutely loved the style of the manga. The story -until the end and I'll explain why- pulled me in and always kept me reading on. The ending was a let down though. I bought this at first not knowing that it was a mini series; no one I knew had known anything about this series. It started out as a normal manga, with a good long story going (with a great backstory in hiding), but this was short lived. The story ends at the third book. At first I thought it was just the end of a shorter story in a great epic, but I was wrong. It ends very quickly, without wrapping up loose ends. It's a let down given how great a style and story this manga actually is.
Sword of the Dark Ones.......2007-01-09
This manga miniseries is pack with amazing artistry and the overall story pulled me further into the story of Leroy Schwartz. The only disappointing things is, as mentioned before it is a miniseries. However, it is definitely worth reading. CMX definitely invests in good manga. To those that read this review, I say I hope you enjoy this manga as much as I.

Customer Reviews:
Great book, purchased as gift.......2007-10-11
I've been doing these facial exercises for several years now and recently purchased for a friend that lost alot of weight. I always receive compliments on how young I look given my age and I'm sure it's the result of this book. I confess I don't do them every single day but fairly often as the mood strikes and have seen results. I highly recommend these facial exercises and this book.
Amazing.......2007-10-02
I cannot say enough. After chemo my always previously youthful over 55 skin had sagged, bagged and wrinkled to a disappointing degree. I could not believe that just 7 days could possibly make a difference, but I had to try it. All I can say is "WOW"! My jaw line is firmer than ever and those awful new wrinkles are a lot less defined. I also love that now I can express myself in so many new ways, or had forgotten, because I am in touch with my face from the inside!
Very Good!.......2007-09-24
This book is really good. I've been practicing the exercises for 10 days, and I can really see a difference. The overall look of my skin has improved. My face looks less tired and with a nice glow.
The only thing that could be improved about the book is the explanations. Sometimes you can get confused as how to perform the movement correctly.
Still, my opinion about the exercises is very positive. I highly recommend facercise.
Outstanding.......2007-09-21
HI! This is Tree Feller's Office Manager: Carole Maggio is a genius with an unfailing sense of perspective and very funny all at once. The exercises work to produce the desired results. Extremely useful after chemo therapy when everything seems to sag prematurely and you want to be happy about your situation, but your face is, well, hanging down. I think I will keep this up for ever, since, I seem to be getting results on droopy areas that seem to run in the family... i.e., these were'nt exactly new, but they sure have improved to better than before! Very exciting. Thanks so much to Carole for making faces in front of a camera so the rest of us could benefit. Oh, and pay close attention to those pictures... her example may take more mind over matter than it seems after the beginner's luck, honeymoon phase passes. Again, she is a genius!
WOW-Facercise is the Fountain of Youth in a Book.......2007-06-20
The thrill of being in control of your appearance and not subject to time is the gift of knowledge that Carole Maggio gives every dedicated student in this book. I saw results in a couple of days, first as my eyes widened and next my chin line began to firm, all this and much more happened within the first 5 days. As I continued to do the Facercise Exercises my face continued to firm, tone and take on a more radiant appearance. I also had TMJ before using these exercises, that is now gone.
The exercises are clear, concise and easy o follow. Carole is straight forward and helps you cut the time down it takes to do the exercises with her tips. I have also used Carole's other products-DVD's, CD's and her skin care products--which have helped my skin even more. Like the exercises they are targeted and precise, so you use only a few products to have good skin without spending a fortune. With Facercise there is NO NEED for surgery, ever!
My next step is to get a privae lesson designed just for me -on the exercises-with Carole or one of the individuals she has trained that are in different cities around the country, even in Hawaii. This will take me to the next level, so I can build on what I have learned in the Facercise Book.
Carole Maggio Facercise: The Dynamic Muscle-Toning Program for Renewed Vitality and a More Youthful Appearance (Revised, Updated)
Thank goodness for this Wonderful Book,it has shown me that I am in control over my looks and that I can "bend time the other way"!

Customer Reviews:
Good Recipes but Awesome Organizational Tips.......2006-11-27
The recipes in this book tend to assume the worst about your kitchen, which is nice. Even though I do have an oven, it's nice to have a little book with microwave and toaster oven recipes.
The organizational tips are great for any size kitchen in my opinion. I also like how he lists the bare-bones kitchen requirements. This book would be fantastic for someone with a tiny kitchen or someone with lots of roommates.
Best of All Possible Worlds.......2006-03-28
For those of us who choose to live in urban areas, it usually follows that we trade space for the excitement of city living. At the same time, the desire to have a warm, inviting kitchen even in a small space is natural--it's a hallmark of domesticity and comfort. Believe it or not, for many of us, the tiny kitchen is not where you make coffee, put take-out on plates or store sweaters in the oven. (All fairly common in NYC). The kitchen is the heart of the home. And even the smalled home needs that.
In his wonderful book, Justin Spring shows you how to make the most of even the tiniest kitchen with practical tips, great recipes and ideas about organization. (This is priceless advice even if you live in a mansion.) His gentle wit and terrific advice fill the book and make it a consistent pleasure. The drawings are great, too, and for its small size the book is beautifully designed...seems like there's a theme here.
Quite simply, Spring shows us that size doesn't matter. It's the intelligence, ingenuity and inventiveness that goes into the kitchen that guarantees what comes out--the warmth, care and great food that give even the tiniest kitchen a big and loving heart.
Appreciated in Arctic Alaska.......2006-03-25
We never have enough space in Arctic Alaska, and we sure like to eat, especially when it is super cold and dark outside.
So this book, and the cheerful, upbeat way it is written, should help us.
But as Spring points out early on, the book can help anyone who has to deal with a hot, crowded and rather claustrophobic kitchen area ("something like taking a berth on "Das Boot."
The man speaks from experience, and shares 100 recipes, successfully done in his 45-sq.ft. New York apartment kitchen. Included is a recipe developed for a 25-pound Alaska wild salmon, caught and sent by his sister from the far north.
He shares the limited space in his 500-sq.ft. apartment with several dogs, who often stake out key locations in the tiny kitchen. Stay tuned for reports on who wins that battle.
The book can help you clean and prep your kitchen, select the right appliances (he loves his toaster oven) and get rid of the clutter many of us accumulate in our kitchen.
So get this book and then stretch out and read it, but not in your tiny kitchen, especially if you have dogs.
Practical and funny.......2006-03-16
This is a gem of a book, suitable for anyone whose kitchen is smaller than ideal. In his humorous, easy-to-read manner Justin Spring provides numerous ways to get the most out of a tiny kitchen and entertain with ease.

Customer Reviews:
Easy read for everyone, very general.......2004-07-28
Nice book, although I did find it a tad bit disappointing! Why?
I got the book before I got my two Tonk kittens, so it was an o.k. starter book.
The book talks a lot about the lovely characteristics about Tonkinese cats and to this I have to agree as I have here 2 very sweet, adorable and gentle purring kittens!
The book however, lacks information that I think are important. It does not mention in detail about the origins and the possible health problems that may occur or originate from the original parental breeds. This is important information to have if you are considering any purebred animal.
The book also covers very minimally on areas regarding pedigrees, various colours, points and torties (as breeders may have different abbreviations for the same colour) deciphering registration and pedigree papers and other documents. This is crucial information especially when talking to your breeder or prospective breeders about your preferences (if any) and about the quality of his animals.
The lack of clarity in the book about what is accepted or not accepted (either colour or healthy physical structure) by the various clubs and associations or what you should look out for when choosing a Tonk kitten is also disappointing. I think regardless of whether you are planning to show your cats or not, if they are of show quality, pet quality or breeding quality,it is good information to have, particularly if you are interested in the breed itself and not just simply owning a cat. Most importantly, it tells you how dedicated the breeder is to his animals and breeding them to produce healthy offspring and not using them as a money-making venture. This might be very important if you are getting your cats shipped to you.
The information about feeding, grooming and caring offered in the book can easily be found in a good book on cat ownership, without having to go specifically to this book.
Overall, I think the book offers a very general skim of Tonkinese cats. If you are seriously considering Tonks, I would recommend that you DO get this book to get a general idea, but also get a good book on good cat ownership as well as Linda Vousden's "Tonkinese Cats". These 3 books combined should give you a very interesting and thorough understanding of what buying and owning Tonks mean.
Good Luck!!!
Very nice book !!.......2003-04-01
I bought this book together with the Tonkinese cat book from Linda Vousden and i find it really good ...
Very nice pictures and good information.

Book Description
This is perhaps the country's most authentic and colorful book on American baskets and the interesting people who made them. Although this in-depth people-oriented book is centered on basketry in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina and the surrounding area, basketmaking in Europe, New England, Pennsylvania, and other parts of the country is examined as a means of comparing and contrasting forms, materials and designs. Indian baskets, especially Cherokee, are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Baskets and Basket Makers in Southern Appalachia.......2001-03-03
This is the most inspiring book I have found about making baskets. John Rice Irwin covers the subject of producing hand made baskets from scratch with a minimum of tools, and materials found in nature. The author features a great variety of black and white pictures of high quality baskets and makers at work. The book is as much a historical perspective of the Southern Appalachian basket culture, as it is a guide for making your own baskets. The remote areas of the region and the abundance of white oak and other native plants dictate the evolution of making baskets. There are references that indicate the initial designs were adopted by the Cherokee people of the region for harvesting, storing, and marketing their crops. The author has taken great care to include many details about the basket makers, their methods, and reasons for weaving. I was most inspired by the personal stories behind each basket, and the fact that many of the baskets outlive their makers. It is not uncommon for a single basket to last through several generations, carrying the love and thoughtfulness of the maker to those that follow. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in hand made baskets, as well as those who are looking for ways to use materials found in the back yard to create a lasting, usefull, even market worthy product. I have adopted many of the methods, meterials, and designes in the baskets I now make.

Book Description
The British Museum holds the world's largest collection of bookplates, but only the British and American ex-libris have so far been published. This catalogue, written in German, describes, lists and reproduces over five hundred ex-libris from the outstanding collection of sixteenth-century German and Austrian bookplates in the Museum. The different types of bookplate, including copies, reproductions using later printing techniques and new works in the style of earlier artists, are discussed in detail. The nineteenth-century fashion of collecting bookplates as works of art is also considered.

Book Description
First published anonymously in 1912, this resolutely unsentimental novel gave many white readers their first glimpse of the double standard -- and double consciousness -- that ruled the lives of black people in modern America. Republished in 1927, at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, with an introduction by Carl Van Vechten, The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man became a groundbreaking document of Afro-American culture; the first first-person novel ever written by a black, it became an eloquent model for later novelists ranging from Zora Neale Hurston to Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison.
Narrated by a man whose light skin enables him to "pass" for white, the novel describes a journey through the strata of black society at the turn of the century -- from a cigar factory in Jacksonville to an elite gambling club in New York, from genteel aristocrats to the musicians who hammered out the rhythms of ragtime. The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man is a complex and moving examination of the question of race and an unsparing look at what it meant to forge an identity as a man in a culture that recognized nothing but color.

Classic.......2007-02-07
For anybody that is interested in this book, keep in mind that it was written in the 1920's. People talked, wrote, and thought very differently, and it was groundbreaking subject matter that paved the way for many other great works. This is the legacy of this book, despite it's flaws. It can be melodramatic at times, and at it's core it is a love story about a man finding racial acceptance from a source he never dreamed of. Most of the book is about a man stuck in the middle of two worlds, struggling with his own personal identity, both as a person as well as a 'person of color'. The writing is not perfect, but it is a well crafted story with fairly interesting characters, and if you are of mixed ancestry, parts of the book will speak to you in profound and comforting ways. Ways that make you realize that those of us who are mixed are not, and have not been, alone. Sorry to say, but the average review for this book tells me how little the average white person in this country really understands about racial issues. The fact that the word "mulatto" is used in the official description of this book, as well as in a consumer review furthers that. 'Mulatto' is as outdated a term as 'negro', and should not be used in 2007 America.
Place on your list of books to read in this lifetime........2006-09-06
I found this book on the bottom shelf in my college bookcase. From the first chapter, I found myself on an old, winding, rollercoaster. James Weldon lived a life in early to mid-twentieth century more filled with extraordinary adventures than many men today. The matter that he did so 'passing' as Caucasian isn't just a coincidence. Character is what matters. . .as a reader should derive from his story; however, the matter of race devoured Weldon's every chance at completing each sweet piece of life-pie.
I cannot say more to those who never understood a Black man than to read...this...book!! You will be enlightened further than you can now imagine.
What is wrong with some of these reviewers?.......2006-08-18
This book is excellent. I read it for a class in college years and years ago... and I still think about it.
NO.......2005-04-07
sorry, i just thought the book was boring and worst of all, its a good story with alot of food for thought, but it was just written so poorly that it was ruined.
Grand finale...not.......2004-08-10
I think the ending of this book ruined it for me. I enjoyed the middle a lot and didn't want to put it down, but I feel the ending just contradicted everything in the worst way.

From the supplier: The ambiguity of color lines and the way race is created through the use of language are the major themes of James Weldon Johnson's 'The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man.' The narrator holds the opinion that separation of the races is a fact of life, but his actions and the reactions of those around him, subvert this notion in the eyes of the reader. It becomes apparent that language has the ability to distort law and culture as well as create, define and control people's beliefs. It is language, then, that makes people 'black' or 'white.'
