Book Description

Enter the 1920's Golden Age of Detection and meet Lord Peter Wimsey, the epitome of the elegant, eccentric sleuth, and one of the great characters of mystery fiction. In Whose Body, Dorothy L. Sayers' first book, Wimsey himself views the stark naked body lying in the tub. And of course, the brilliant detective untangles the ghastly murder in spite of incorrect assumptions by the police. British actor David Case captures the essence of this delightful mystery in this unabridged production. 5 cassettes.

4 out of 5 stars "His clothes were kind of a rebuke to the world at large.".......2006-09-18

Whose Body? Sayers first Lord Peter Whimsey novel hints at the promise of later volumes in the series. Lord Peter is the aristocrat who took up amateur sleuthing as a distraction from shell shock he suffers from serving in WWI. He has an enormous intelligence, a knack for charming difficult people and a fussy rambling manner that some mistake for weakness. His other talents are piano playing, knowledge of ancient books and manuscripts, and an athletic physique disguised by his sartorial excellence.

In this volume there is a seemingly insolvable mystery, with a not too competent police inspector who doesn't seem to like Lord Peter very much. Shades of Sherlock Holmes Inspector Lestrade? Sayers is still putting together her writing style and comes out with florid phrases like "His long amiable face looked as if it had generated spontaneously from his top hat, as white maggots breed from Gorgonzola." However, Sayers undoubtedly has a mastery of the English language and Whose Body is a highly readable novel as well as a good mystery which sets the stage for Lord Peter to develop as a character.

5 out of 5 stars Detecting with Sophisticated Nonchalance.......2006-01-31

Lord Peter Wimsey, one of the classic detectives of British mysteries, is introduced to the reader and the world in this 1923 whodunit.

Miss Dorothy L Sayers, who with grace and wisdom excelled in this genre, presents her amateur sleuth as one whose "...long, amiable face looked as if it had generated spontaneously from his top hat, as white maggots breed from Gorgonzola."

We are drawn into a murder investigation that will include a body in the bath and a dowager duchess -- the first, disposed of in someone else's flat, and the second being Lord Peter's mother. We meet Wimsey's faithful manservant Bunter (who is also his protector) and we learn some of the quirks and sterling virtues of Lord Peter's character.

Wimsey is Miss Sayers' beau ideal of manhood--with an intellect and style that seems a combination of the (then) Prince of Wales (Wimsey's look, bearing and college being the same as the future Duke of Windsor) and Fred Astaire.

When not collecting rare books and sipping vintage wine, he collects around himself rare suspects and metes out the draught of justice. A gentleman to the core, Oxford educated and a veteran of the Great War (which has left him the worse for wear) Wimsey is the epitome of sophisticated nonchalance.

Without giving anything away, I encourage you to look for the humanity of Lord Peter. How he struggles with the issue of mercy v. justice. It is ever-present in the Sayers oeuvre, especially in the denouement.

For this reason, and many others, you will like Wimsey. You will like the way Miss Sayers writes. You will want to read more of these Lord Peter mysteries and there are a number of excellent ones to read.

And then you will wish there were many, many more.

If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful........2005-04-26

I had forgotten how fun this is. Reflecting the social attitudes of English aristocracy at the time, yet still with the impact of WWI, Wimsey is an interesting character surrounded by a cast of excellent supporting players. It was a real treat to be re-introduced to this delightful series. If you've not read Dorothy Sayers, I recommend giving the series a try.

4 out of 5 stars The First in a Classic Series.......2004-11-13

Published in 1923, WHOSE BODY? was the first of Dorothy Sayers' novels--and in it she introduces the supercillious Lord Peter Wimsey, who conceals his depth under the veneer of London fop and who dabbles in criminal detection. And when a naked body is found in a timid architech's bathtub, Wimsey wastes little time in exploring the possibilities.

As others have noted, WHOSE BODY? is plagued by a certain degree patronizing racism--a disturbing note that Sayers will repeat in virtually every novel in the series. This is not defensible, but in fairness to Sayers it should be noted that she was of the "British Empire Era," a period in which such attitudes were the norm. And she is hardly the only writer of that period to strike such poses; the same attitudes arise, for instance, in Agatha Christie's novels of the 1920s and 1930s.

That aside, to a certain extent this is indeed an apprentice work, and it reads as somewhat stiff and mannered in comparison with Sayers' later work--but considered on its own merits the novel holds up unexpectedly well. This is largely due to the humor with which Sayers approaches her story, and while she will qualify, soften, and further humanize Lord Peter in later works he is nonetheless an instantly fascinating and completely original creation. While this particular novel will always be of more interest to established Wimsey fans than to newcomers, it is nonetheless the beginning of a series that would produce at least four masterworks--and as such it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars Introducing Lord Peter and company.......2004-09-28

This is the first of the 'Lord Peter' series and therefore spends a lot of time laying the groundword for the series. We learn of Peter's wartime experiences and subsequent post traumatic stress (to use 21st century terms), meet many of the characters that will return through the series, most notably Bunter, Parker, and the Duchess Dowager. The on going conflict that Peter feels about the consequences of his 'poking around' is also introduced.

The mystery centers on the disappearance of a wealthy businessman and the appearance of a naked corpse in a bathtub. Peter finds the connection between these seemingly unrelated events after following a trail through various strata of 1920's English society. Although the mystery is clever for me at least the real story here is Lord Peter and his world. The lives of Peter and his friends and family are much more engaging than the mystery. This is definitely a 'cozy' series, anyone looking for a more hardcore challenging story should look elsewhere.

This story was written and set in the early 1920's and is definitely a product of those times. There a numerous comments that are typical to the time but are very offensive to the 21st century reader. Ignore those and enjoy the rest of the story.

This is also a first novel and has some flaws common to first novels. Sayers gives us far too much information and detail. The subsequent novels are better edited and move along more easily. Still this is a must read for any fan of this series.

Book Description

A naked body is found lying in the tub, a gold pince-nez perched before the sightless eyes. Telltale signs indicate that the face was shaved after death. Despite evidence to the contrary, the police are certain that the victim was a prominent financier. Lord Peter Wimsey knows better, but can he prove it? First published in 1923, Whose Body? established the disarmingly debonair, and somewhat foppish, Wimsey as one of the most enduring characters in English literature. It remains one of the most significant — and most charming — of the Golden Age mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Dorothy L. Sayers mystifies us from the beginning.......2006-03-20

From the very beginning we are capture by her writing style and characters. She only gets better from here. It is the interaction and relationship of her characters that make the story come alive.

We start off with two mysteries at once. A naked man wearing sunglasses is found in someone else's bathtub. Across town an important person goes missing. The local policeman had figures it out already (or has he). He has even nabbed the suspects. Lord Peter (armature sleuth) and friend of Inspector Parker must figure out if one plus one is one or two.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Daredevil story.......2003-08-18

This 1994 event was supposed to be a major chapter in the Daredevil comic series, and it is and isn't in many ways. The storyline revolves around a virus called About Face which it seems everyone wants to get their hands on. Daredevil is re-united with Elektra as they try to stop the Snakeroot from obtaining it, and in between Daredevil's identity is revealed by an ambitious reporter, and culminates in a faceoff between Daredevil and Elektra against Snakeroot, the Hellspawn (no, not that one), and Erynys; a killer created in Elektra's image. The plot is confusing beyond belief at points, but the excellent art elevate this otherwise disappointing Daredevil saga. Fall From Grace also features appearances from Venom, Morbius, and Silver Sable; all of whom are mostly here for show.

4 out of 5 stars Looks great.......2000-04-03

This is one hell of a confusing story. When I read Grant Morrison's JLA or Warren Ellis' Stormwatch, it's sometimes a bit confusing, but I know at the back of my mind that there is a good story there to make it worthwhile. When I read XMen books it's often confusing, and I know in the back of my mind that the story is a pile of drivel anyway, so I might as well not bother.

This book seems to fall into the former category, but it is hard work. It always helps to have a West Indian demon though.

The art on the book is gorgeous though and perfectly matched with the colouring. If you ever buy books on the strength of the art alone, this is definitely one to go for.

The main problem with this book for me is that it turns the ending to Elektra Assassin into a dream (which kind of fits but is a shame)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!!!!!!.......1999-08-24

This series can be a little confusing at times but it is overall a great read with great art. Highly recommended!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a breath of fresh air!.......2007-08-23

What a relief it is to consider that you alone, without the cooperation or consent of your spouse, can work to improve the quality of your relationship...Wow! I found this book to be very empowering and uplifting...forcing me to focus on the good rather than the negative aspects of my relationship.

This book has fabulous insight into the male versus female habits, needs, tendencies and desires. I consider myself to be an optimist and a spiritual person, and most relationship books just don't "fit", and usually bring me down. I definitely plan to read more by this author, and I hope my spouse will as well.

When you read this book, make sure that you don't skip the "In Conclusion" section at the end...it brought me to tears, and truly put into words how I feel about my husband, and about life! We need to stop focusing on our problems and how to solve them, and just focus on the moment and the journey. Enjoy life...Begin now!

                  4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-04-11

If you are frustrated with not getting enough effort out of your partner when it comes to getting a derailed relationship back on track this book will help. I can't say it is the best written book ever, but the ways it tells you to cope and take charge are enough to make it a worthwile read.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my marriage.......2007-02-03

I really didn't believe that I could change my relationship, by only working myself. Boy, did Susan Page show me I was wrong. Take note, this book is not for the lazy or the faint of heart. She has "exercises" that you must actually DO, many of which involve writing about yourself and your partner. She requires that you do some hard and sometimes painful analysis of your situation. It's not always easy, it's not always fun. But if you are willing to do the work, you will find that you CAN bring you and your spouse together.

5 out of 5 stars Can This Marriage Be Saved?.......2005-12-22

I wish I'd had this book when my first marriage ran into trouble. My counselor at that time told me the marriage could be saved only if both persons were willing to work on it and that one person could not save it alone.
The focus of this book is on developing fresh perspectives about the relationship, overcoming resentment, recapturing lost intimacy and solving major problems, one at a time. Don't give up without first trying these techniques.

                  5 out of 5 stars very insightful.......2005-09-27

This book is very insightful. I just got the book and couldn't stop reading it. It points out many things that I've been doing was wrong and teach me new techniques to due with issues. I am the person that often spend a lot of energy being angry and felt like there were no way out because my partner and I are both very bull headed. But this book taught me many techniques to manage my anger (to release them but not venting them on my partner.), and deal with the problem.... not putting it off and felt more and more bitter and angry for months and finally there was the big blow up! These are good techniques to learn even if you are in a good relationship. I can't wait to try these little experiments and see how they work out.

Great book if you ever wanted to know how and where the names of some of the most popular booze came from. ie. tanqurey, capn morgans, JD, Vermouth, ect

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-06-21

This is a great book especially for those of us in the industry; i.e. THE BARTENDERS! If you are always looking for trivia to present to your guests at the bar then buy this book and hit them with some fun facts about what they are drinking. I always wondered why BEEFEATER gin got that name and how the character on the label came to be called a "Beefeater".
The book is wriiten in down to earth lingo without a lot of tech talk. It is a thoroughly entertaining addition to a mixologists' reference library.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite subject.......2005-03-23

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the contents informative and entertaining. I have expanded my liquor cabinet greatly due to reading this book. In fact, it made me want to run out and buy a bottle of Booker's at 1:00am on a work night. This book is an excellent way to learn more about the origins of your favorite spirits.

4 out of 5 stars Clever Little Book.......2004-08-02

Take equal parts history, humor, and mixology. Shake well and pour liberally into a slim paperback. The result is "Big Shots: The Men Behind the Booze" by magazine editor A.J. Baime. More than just another bartending book, "Big Shots" details the lives of colorful characters such as Jim Beam, Jack Daniel, and Johnnie Walker, whose 19th-century exploits laid the foundations for today's corporate behemoths.
According to research by Adams Beverage Group, Americans consumed 153 million cases of distilled spirits in 2002. Yet few know the history behind their favorite drinks. Despite barroom legend, the Martini evolved from an 1880s concoction invented in Martinez, California. The French monk Dom Perignon didn't discover bubbly wine, he just made it popular. True tequila never has a worm.
Baime reveals the liquor industry's dirty little secrets (Smirnoff brand vodka is actually as American as apple pie) and answers some practical drinking questions (Just what the heck is vermouth anyway?). He also offers little-known nuggets of knowledge, some of which are surprising (Jack Daniel began making whiskey at the tender age of nine), others less so (Captain Morgan was a murderer and a rapist who drank himself to death). The book's snappy narrative has an irreverent, lighthearted tone that betrays Baime's editorial background with magazines such as "Maxim" and "Playboy."
The impact of Prohibition on the liquor industry is a recurring theme, and stories of moonshiners and rumrunners abound. When the Eighteenth Amendment was finally repealed in 1933, American distillers had to play catch up with their Canadian and European counterparts, who for a decade had quietly grown rich encouraging the smuggling of their products. A British gin maker even used packaging designed to float, so if a few cases "accidentally" fell overboard near the American coastline, they could be easily recovered by thirsty Yanks. Baime explains that thanks in part to this little trick, Tanqueray is still the bestselling gin in the U.S. today.
"Big Shots" is not a comprehensive bartender's guide. Drink ingredients are listed as a sidebar only when relevant to the main text. Differences in related liquors, such as Irish whiskey versus Scotch whiskey, are clarified for the social drinker. The author also gives a crash course on cryptic liquor terminology, such as the strange markings found on cognac bottles.
Even teetotalers will appreciate this clever little book. After all, where else can you find corporate history sharing the page with a recipe for Irish Coffee?

5 out of 5 stars Big Shots: The Men Behind the Booze.......2003-12-01

What a great read. Educational, humorus and really informative. Sometimes with the PR, you aren't always sure what's what, but Baime gives you all the good stuff. I ended up purchasing 5 copies for gifts for the holidays.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on Westies out there.......2007-04-11

If you are serious about Westies, you absolutely MUST have this book. Faherty has a writing style that's humorous and informative, and she gives the nitty-gritty on the mysterious art of handstripping. No other resource out there gives this much detail. I've taken the plunge and am stripping my own Westie, and Faherty's comprehensive chapter on grooming has been a tremendous help. This book is really geared for Westie connoisseurs, who have an interest in showing their dogs. In addition to the grooming chapter, several sections are devoted to the art of showing your dog as well as breeding. This may be too dense a book for a general pet owner and the more general Westie books may be more appropriate. However, if you are looking for THE resource on Westies, buy this book!

Every dog enthusiast, westie lover or not, should read this book, because even though it talks about westies, one can learn a lot about dogs in general. I have more than 15 years of experience in showing dogs and more than 12 years of professional grooming experience and I still learned a lot from this well written, very detailed and comprehensive book.

This is a great book for people who plan to breed West Highland White terriers, but as the owner of a six-month-old Westie I'm finding it worthless with the exception of the author's charming introductory remarks about the breed. There's no practical advice on training and far more advice than any typical pet owner is looking for with respect to breeding and whelping. The section on grooming is almost ludicrously intimidating. I simply cannot believe the deceptive reviews I read here.

The American Horticultural Society's Plant Propagation is one of those stuck-on-a-desert-island books. All the information you could ever possibly want in order to propagate virtually any plant or tree or cactus or succulent that might be growing on said desert island is to be found somewhere between the covers of this marvelous, informative book. If you're tired of buying many pots of expensive perennials, tuck a copy of Plant Propagation under your arm and buy one good specimen. From that specimen, following the simple directions, make many plants. It's the kind of skill that all grandmothers of a more distant generation seemed to have.

Still mixed up about hypogeal and epigeal germination? Can't tell a bulbil from a cormel? The very first section covers all the basics of plant biology as well as the history and basic how-to of propagation. The body of the book is divided into "Garden Trees," "Shrubs and Climbing Plants," "Perennials, Annuals and Biennials," "Cacti and Other Succulents," "Bulbous Plants," and "Vegetables." Each section begins with an overview of appropriate propagation techniques: the many styles of grafting, seed saving, taking cuttings, and bulb and root division. Individual plants within each section are addressed alphabetically. With Plant Propagation in hand, you can hybridize your own rose and name it after yourself. The text is written to an intelligent, somewhat experienced gardening reader, and the lush illustrations are accurate and effective. --Schuyler Ingle

This book examines law in Micronesia from a novel perspective. It draws upon several branches of interpretive analysis, including mundane phenomenology, symbolic interaction, and cultural hermeneutics, to construct a comprehensive approach to transplanted systems of state law. Rather than the usual focus on legal norms and institutions, this approach directs attention to the law-related meaningful actions and understandings of legal actors and of non-legal actors. Application of this approach results in insights about law in Micronesia, as well as about law itself, and about the ideology of law. A wide range of subjects are addressed, from the nature of legal thinking to the autonomy of law. It is a work in legal theory grounded in psychological, sociological and anthropological observations and analysis.

                            Book Description

In 1901, the young Winnifred Eaton arrived in New York City with literary ambitions, journalistic experience, and the manuscript for A Japanese Nightingale, the novel that would sell many thousands of copies and make her famous. Hers is a real Horatio Alger story, with fascinating added dimensions of race and gender.

While commercially successful women writers were uncommon a century ago, Winnifred Eaton (1875-1954) cultivated a particular persona to set herself apart even within this rare breed. Born to a British father and a Chinese mother, Winnifred decided to capitalize on her exotic appearance while protecting herself from Americans' scorn of Chinese: she "became" Japanese, assuming the pen name Onoto Watanna. While her eldest sister, Edith Maude Eaton (now acknowledged as the mother of Asian American fiction), was writing stories of downtrodden Chinese immigrants under the name Sui Sin Far, Winnifred's Japanese romance novels and stories became all the rage, thrusting her into the glittering world of New York literati.

Diana Birchall chronicles the sometimes desperate, sometimes canny, always bold life of her "bad grandmother," about whom she knew almost nothing until her own adulthood. Here are the details of an amazing professional career as a journalist, a bestselling novelist, and a Hollywood scriptwriting protégée of Carl Laemmle at Universal Studios.

Here, too, is the personal saga of a woman who bore "a book and a baby a year" during her troubled first marriage--and who, at the age of fifty-six, wooed back her estranged second husband when her Hollywood career hit the skids during the Great Depression. Having achieved early fame as a Japanese romance writer, Winnifred later jettisoned the kimono and wrote books (including one entitled Cattle) set on the plains of Alberta, where her husband owned a ranch.

A chameleon? A desperate poseur? A shrewd businesswoman? She was all that, and much more, as Diana Birchall demonstrates. Navigating the shifting boundary between life and art, Birchall probes Winnifred's conflicting stories, personal tempests, and remarkable accomplishments, presenting a woman whose career was "sensational" in every sense.

5 out of 5 stars This Shared Joy.......2002-01-18

I didn't mean to like Winnifred Eaton. After all, she was a bit of a fanfaronade and very much of a poseur, not at all the sort I wanted in my circle of intimates.

But Diana Birchall's sparkling biography changed my mind. Writing with unblinking honesty, Birchall describes the many lives that her chameleon grandmother lived, from journalist and novelist to story editor and screenwriter. Of most interest to me were the stories of her career as wife in two unconventional marriages and mother to four children. Birchall's graceful use of language is enhanced by her wit and intelligently ironic style. She concludes this delightful biography with the acknowledgment that sharing what she has learned about her grandmother has been a privilege and a joy. Surely it is no less a privilege and a joy for the reader.

5 out of 5 stars A tour de force of self-invention.......2001-10-26

Birchall's fascinating and beautifully written account of her grandmother's life is an important work for scholars in women's studies, Asian-American or American studies, Canlit, and the movie industry, and for the general reader seeking a compelling biography.

Other reviewers have mentioned Eaton/Watanna's background. I will stress instead the absorbing interest of Winnifred's successive reinventions of herself in societies that had no ready place for her. Like a brilliant slackrope walker with an increasingly awkward load, Winnifred managed to shift her balance not only to survive, but pulled off one tour de force after another. Her performances as a Japanese-American novelist, as a screenwriter and as a rancher doyenne would win applause from Daniel Defoe.

Eaton/Watanna has become a focal interest of American scholars in recent years. As her granddaughter, Birchall had informaitonal advantages in writing on her. Her graceful, well-considered book shows how glad we should be for Birchall's advantages.

                            5 out of 5 stars A jolly, laughing lady.......2001-09-27

"A jolly, laughing lady" are the first words of the bigraphy; the last ones are: "To be able to share what I have learned with others has been a privilege and a joy. Has not this journey been an enviable inheritance in itself?"

Inbetween these words Birchall indeed shares with the reader the life of Winnifred, in personal and intimate detail. Birchall also seduces the reader into not just reading, but thinking about the culture and times Winnifred faced in her own inimitable style, from her life in Canada as young girl down to the years of Hollywood.

Normally I am none too fond of biographies but this one enchanted me, by the content and by the style of Birchall's writing. Full of zest, lifely images and easy to read on and on. As non native reader I appreciated this very much; it was a joy and a privilege to share. Would that all biographies were such a good read!

                            5 out of 5 stars A jolly, laughing lady,.......2001-09-26

"A jolly, laughing lady," those are the opening words of the biography.
                            The closing words are:
"To be able to share what I have learned with others is a privilege and a joy. Has not this journey been an enviable inheritance in itself?"

In between those personal words, I got the chance to intimately share the life of Winnifred Eaton. Birchall opens the family vaults, secrets and intimacies; shares her deductions and her thoughts about Winnifred with me as reader; and writes in a zesty, tangy language that kept seducing me to read on and on.
The things I learned about the early filmindustry in Hollywood and the look behind the screens, are as fascinating as all the facts about the working conditions for women in the first half of the century in the USA

This biography by Birchall leads me to wonder and think about Winnifred as a human being and also about the culture and times that Winnifred went through in her life and tackled straight on, in her own inimitable style.
What more can a biography do?

Normally I am none too fond of biographies as genre. This one had me enthralled, qua content and style of writing.

                            5 out of 5 stars Interesting history.......2001-09-26

In my library I have dozens of books inherited from my parents and my grandparents. We have been readers for several generations, and I grew up with many of these books. One of these books was a novel called "The Heart of Hyacinth" by an author mysteriously named Onoto Watanna. The author was unknown to me, but I thought the book was one of the most beautiful of all the books I'd inherited, with lovely Japanese-style illustrations and drawings.

But now I've had a chance to learn about the woman who lurked behind that exotic nom de plume. I learn she was not Japanese at all, but half Chinese and half English. Yet her true story seems to be as fully exotic as any of the character's lives from her books.

Diana Birchall has done a wonderful job of bringing her fascinating grandmother to life. The book give a wonderful look at a most unusual woman, and what life was like for young women at the turn of the last century. At least what life was like when the young women were as self-confident and gutsy as the young Winnifred Eaton.
