A Great Read!.......2007-01-18
This is my favorite book by MMF. He wrote an exciting book about a single father named, Sticks, who loves his 2 year old daughter, Brie beyond expression. So much in fact, that he mistakenly puts his life on the line in an attempt to improve their lives financially.
Once the mistake is made, this book takes you on a serious ride that will keep you hyped and guessing to the end.

If you are thinking of getting this book, I would suggest that you do not waist your time. Pick up Blinking Red Light instead. This book defied all logic and made absolutely no sense. I am sure anyone who wrote something good about this book is a friend of the author but this book was the worst.
Not to give anything away, the premise of the book was someone saw a video tape and tried to blackmail the original owner of the tape in order to give him back the tape. The original owner wants the tape back and does what he has to do to get it back.
The first thing a sane person would think is, all you have to do is make copies of the tape and you could blackmail him forever...so why all the drama to get a tape back, JUST HORRIBLE!!!

This book was a very good book, very original and based in Philadelphia. it kept me on pens and needles the entire reading. I highly recommend it. I mean why do we always think we can come up the easy way? Meet an unemployed African American single father's plight trying to raise his 2 year old daughter on a diminishing 20K lawsuit payout and no job. How blackmail really wasn't a friend of his. But then, neither was his ace koom bud that he grew up with. Sometimes when a large sum of money comes into play, even your best row-dawg don't know you anymore. Read it. I highly recommend it. Very entertaining.

I picked up Blinking Red Light from the Library and I loved it I learned that he had Wifebeater in stores and I immediatley went out and bought it I read it and loved it as much as Blinking Red light after that I vowed that I would buy every single Book that he put out.
Wifebeater takes you on a wild ride and you think your going in one direction but you get pulled into another one.
I strongly suggest that you pick this book up if you want to go on a adventure through the streets of Philly!
I can't wait to get my hands on your next masterpiece!!!!!!!!

In the heavens of fantasy, Leah R. Cutter is a new, brightly shining star distinguished as much for her attention to historical/legendary detail as for her sharply poignant prose. She does not describe the settings in which her fiction takes place; she transports you there in such a way that you experience all the sights and sounds of the drama for yourself. In her first novel, Paper Mage, she recreated the world of China during the Tang Dynasty. Now, in The Caves of Buda, she takes the reader on a detail-oriented excursion to the living world of Hungary, where a powerful demon waits for the curses that turned him to stone to be eradicated - and for the former young child with whom his destiny has become intertwined to return and so begin the end game of his release from captivity deep within the caves outside Budapest.
We all have our demons; in the case of Laci (pronounced LAH -tsee), an old man now living in Arizona, the demons are all too real. As a young boy in war-torn Hungary, Laci encountered the demon Belusz in the caves of Buda. Forced into the foul thing's presence by horrific magicians who used to be men, Laci lost his own magical sight but managed to return the demon's curse before escaping. Twelve years later, Laci fled Hungary with his little girl after the Communists killed his wife, and he is now an old man suffering the loss of his mental faculties. Dementia has taken away a large part of the man that Laci's granddaughter Zita knows and loves, so the young lady puts little stock in her grandfather's ravings about returning to Hungary to kill the demon. Then her grandfather escapes from the hospital, and Zita finds herself hurrying across the world to search for him in the land of his birth, unaware of the dark and painful part she will play in the end game of demonic infiltration. The lifting of the first four of five curses is linked to dark events in human history, and only Laci knows the danger that the whole world will face should Belusz be freed completely of his bonds.
Ephraim Cohen also makes his way to Hungary, breaking free of the chains of ritual and changelessness that have always bound him. In the land of his ancestors, Cohen discovers that the rituals he has always relied upon subconsciously are more than just empty motions, for he has magic within him, the kind of magic Belusz needs to gain his freedom - and the kind of magic Laci, now joined by Zita, needs in order to stop and kill the demon. By the time the trio comes together, the reality of demonic forces is no longer a matter of speculation, and the three unite in a desperate attempt to save the world from unimaginable horror.
These are complex characters drawn with masterful touches by Cutter. Past and present interweave in Laci's troubled mind, drawing the reader into Hungary's troubled past as well as its demon-threatened present. Zita and Ephraim are deeply human characters battling their own demons in preparation for the fight to come with Belusz. Laci must overcome his great fear and the dementia that makes his thought processes a tangled web of reason and unreason; Zita must conquer the fear that she will fail and disappoint the grandfather she loves so dearly as well as overcome her weakness for external control currently represented by her unfeeling boyfriend back home; Ephraim must come to terms with the unhappiness of his old life and recognize the intrinsic self-worth of his own existence. The ultimate confrontation with Belusz, when it comes, holds surprises for the reader and plays out in a marvelously crafted fashion.
Cutter's commitment to her writing is impressive indeed. At the end of the book you will find a rarity among novels - a bibliography of works consulted in the construction of the history, myth, and tradition of the entire novel. The Caves of Buda is a product of both extensive research and the magical creativity of Cutter's inspired imagination, and the end result is a highly literary novel that takes on a living and breathing life of its own.
Excellent fantasy/horror tale.......2005-03-16
Laci - an older man who escaped the horror of facing a mighty demon while being a young boy living in WWII Budapest - must return to the city of his past and destroy the demon Belusz before it frees itself and destroys the world. His beloved granddaughter, Zita, thinks he is loosing his mind, but follows him back to Budapest. While there, she meets Ephraim, a young man with magical gifts. Slowly realizing that Laci is telling the truth, both Zita and Ephraim stand along the old man and face Belusz and his minions in the final confrontation. Original, with great characters, superb narrative and a deeper meaning. This is a great novel from Leah Cutter. Highly recommended.

This book is set in modern times, with a bit of magic and a few fantastic creatures added. Two of the three main characters are particularly interesting: an old man who is experiencing dimensia, and a compulsive middle aged man who discovers that some of his habits are magical spells. The third main character is not: the old man's loving granddaughter, whose attitudes regarding her live-in boyfriend are distasteful and selfish.
The plot follows these three, who eventually confront an evil creature in Europe. The plot is internally consistent, characterization nicely done, and the overall mood pleasant. "Caves of Buda" is an enjoyable read, worthwhile but not "can't put it down".
Horror at its'best.......2004-04-07
In Hungary during the Nazi occupation, Laci and his friend Janos stumbled across a cave near Buda. Being scouts they were eager to explore but Jews were using a part of the isolated area to hide from the Nazis. The two boys became separated and Laci who had "the sight" saw the demon Belusz bound to his stone throne. After a magical alteration, the demon ripped away Laci's magical sight.
Laci is old now, living in Arizona, but though he becomes forgetful he still vividly remembers the cave and the demon as they are bound together so that if one dies so does the other. However Belusz has found a way to break the binding spell and kill Laci without harming himself. Laci goes home to kill the demon before he wrecks havoc on the world. His granddaughter Zita loves him very much, but thinks he's senile and follows him to Hungary determined to bring him back to the States. In Hungary, Zitla discovers she has the sight as she "sees" the demon. She joins forces with the magician Ephraim Cohen and her grandfather to prepare for the biggest battle of their lives fought on the magical plane.
The demons in this novel are not biblical in any sense of the word but are evil entities that are a part of Hungarian mythology. Although Zita is initially a skeptic, when she believes she becomes a dynamo in action, determined to find a way to kill Belusz without getting Laci killed. Leah Cutter, (see PAPER MAGE), has written a horror novel that despite our rational belief system, feels very believable and though in Eastern Europe has no vampires.

I found the book to be informative on many things I hadn't known, including helping me understand the mechanism of diabetes itself. Clear, simple language made it a lot easier than I thought it would be.
I followed the menus and recipes completely, which turned out to be somewhat difficult as i had never previously used so much fresh produce, and it takes longer to prepare than tossing something in the microwave or stopping in at a fast food place. I was never hungry, however, and my craving for sweets disappeared during the first couple of weeks.
It has a great resource section.
The single most important thing about the book? It worked for me.

One of my children checked this book out of the library a few years ago when I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. I was very faithful about following the guidelines ,exercising, diet, vitamins and supplements. You have to be. I refused to go on medication. I lost 20 lbs. and my blood sugar readings were always within safe range --- and never above 140 after meals. I bought the book for both my brother recently (diagnosed and is on oral med and insulin!!! ) and my sister who is on oral med (and has been for several years).
I recommend anyone with diabetes buy this book --- but PLEASE talk to your doctor before trying anything new!! GOOD-LUCK!!
Reversing Diabetes by Julian Whitaker.......2007-05-21
A friend gave us this book a number of years ago when my husband was first diagnoised as diabetic. He was put on insulin but had adverse effects. We decided to give this book a try. It was a major change in our diet to begin with but was well worth the end result. As time has gone on, I have been able to adapt our favorite recipes to the information provided in the book. The overall information on diabetes and what Dr Julian has found to help a diabetic, has been very educational. We use this book as a reference all the time. When friends have asked us about what we are doing for my husband's diabetes, we refer them to this book. We have purchased a number of these books along with the Cookbook and given them to family and friends alike. I would recommend this to anyone.
Good stuff but some junk science in its pages..........2006-11-29
There are a number of good ideas in this book to help reduce the risk of developing full-blown diabetes but I could not give it five stars because of the junk science contained in its pages along with the good.
For instance, we are told on pages 124-125 to stay away from Aspartame and avoid Fructose, but to use Stevia. Wait a minute! Avoid Fructose? Well, there goes a healthy diet involving fruit! Fruit is loaded with Fructose. This is by far one of the most common natural sweeteners in fruit, whence its name--Fructose.
There are studies which link Stevia with deadly metabolites (some far more dangerous than those which can come from Aspartame) and even some studies which link prolonged Stevia use with cancers and organ damage. Yes, there are very small amounts of methyl alcohol released from the breakdown of Aspartame but these amounts in even large amounts of the substance are less than one would get from eating a single orange! In addition, I know from personal experience with Aspartame use that my dad's own blood sugar levels were consistently lower during Aspartame use with 600 to 1000 mcg Chromium Polynicotinate (NOT Picolinate) supplements than without. Even the supplements themselves were not sufficient alone. They worked best with the Aspartame. I don't know why and my dad doesn't either.
In many instances my dad found that his blood sugar levels fell faster when the meals were consumed with at least 20 ounces of Aspartame sweetened fluids + Chromium Polynicotinate than without, ranging from 45 minutes to two hours as opposed to over four hours without. And, his HbA1c tests have consistently been between 5.1 and 6.2% during the times he did this, compared to over 8% without! To the last day my dad saw my doctor this year he continued to be shocked by my HbA1c results for years, and all this without medication or insulin (my dad was diagnosed with a blood sugar level of 474 and now it falls to within the normal range). Your mileage may vary (these are his personal results, not a clinical trial), however, and it is hard to find sources of Aspartame that are not loaded with either other forms of sugars (Equal) or the severe bloating and gasiness that results from soda drinking to get the Aspartame. He farted a lot so he had to cut back on the sodas! But that was the worst symptoms he got from that.
Anyway, take the good from this book but watch out for the junk science which gets repeated at points within its pages. Weigh your alternatives, don't believe the hype about some things without considering what is often unknown about others, and don't take the good doctor's word on everything--get the facts on everything. Useful but use with care and work carefully with your doctor with anything you try!
The Title Delivers As Promised.......2006-11-10
As a newly diagnosed diabetic I was looking for just the solution the title offered - I wanted to reverse this insidious disease before it wrecked my life.Guess what, it did just that.I followed the regimen very closely and I do not take any oral medications much less insulin by injection.I had rather keep this mess at bay with diet, exersize and supplements.And they are all meticulously itemized in this great book.

Much more than just great recipies..........2006-08-01
Being a former San Francisco resident I've had the pleasure of eating at Bette's Oceanview Diner. The only problem with eating Bette's cakes is your faced with the reality that you own pancakes really don't compare. Now, with this book in hand, I am delighted to say that this is no longer the case.
The Pancake Handbook isn't a mere "recipe book". I've tried many recipes throughout the years with varying success. In this book you'll learn that picking the right flour, baking soda and other ingredients is just as important as how they're mixed together. You'll learn about griddle temperature, batter consistency and when to flip for perfect doneness. There are so many simple little tricks to better pancakes and they're all in this book.
The recipes cover pancakes of all varieties including; basic, fancy, spiced, cornmeal, whole-wheat, and sourdough. There are chapters on dairy pancakes, crepes, soufflé pancakes, kid's pancakes and toppings. Many of them have variations and add-ins as well as optional ingredients such as how to make buttermilk pancakes when you haven't any buttermilk on hand.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to make great cakes regardless of your current cooking abilities. It is simple to follow and virtually guarantees fantastic results.

This book is a must have for any pancake lover. I was first introduced to The Pancake Handbook through reading a two page spread of excerpts in the LA Times. I tried 3 of the 5 recipes before I bought the book. Every recipe I've tested so far is delicious and superb!!!

Book gives an excellent history of working terriers up to today's terriers as we know them. It has well researched documentation on each breed and its origin. Comprehensive in the explanation of terrier hunting, performance events, both in the US and abroad. Outstanding chapters on selecting a puppy, training, terrier/dachshund organizations, and many other items of interest to both the earthdog novice and enthusiast. I have read/studied almost every book in print (current and discontinued) concerning working terriers and I would rank this book as the "bible" in it's relationship to the others.
A must-have for all terrier/dachshund owners........1999-04-11
This book is written in a way that will appeal to all actual and prospective terrier owners. Frier-Murza adds depth and breadth to our basic understanding of terriers. For depth, the book covers the history of terriers (with many quotes from the 2nd century BC to the present). Illustrations from hunts in 16th century France are especially interesting. It also discusses the social forces that resulted in the emergence of today's breeds (about 30 pages). Being bred for earth work is the reason for the terrier's independence and ability to figure things out for itself, as well as the terrier's interest in chasing, tugging, etc. While actually working earth dogs is not for everyone, understanding our dog's drives and why they were bred to be the way they are can make each of us a more sensitive owner. For breadth, 29 different earthdog breeds are also highlighted in a section the brings out the working character and history, as well as the functional strengths of each breed (over 100 well illustrated pages). Breeds covered include the AKC working terriers as well as breeds like the German Jagdterrier and the American Feist and Rat Terrier (illustrated on the lap of Teddy Roosevelt). These 29 breed summaries are grouped by the regions (also described) in which the breeds emerged, thus placing them in historic and geographic context. Compared to Migliorini's book, Frier-Murza takes a more comprehensive and accurate view of both the history of the terrier's and also breed history. For example, Migliorini gives only 25 (smaller) pages (with larger type) to breed descriptions, compared to the 100 pages Frier-Murza provides. The book is very handsomely produced in near coffee table format. The hard cover book (with oversize pages) contains extensive photos. The photos are very clear, illustrative, and well produced

I'm generally thought of with a magnifying glass in one hand, and the bowl of a pipe in the other, but truth be told I've been a cigarette man most of my life, and since discovering Camel cigarettes in the 40s, they are my preferred brand. I was always quite fond of the illustration that adorned the package of the original non-filtered Camel cigarette, and at one time collected the empty packs until a doctor friend of mine told me that my smoking habit was bad enough without adding another addiction to the mix.
This fine book, "Camel Cigarette Collectibles: The Early Years: 1913-1963" should bring back warm memories for all those who would walk a mile for a Camel if only their failing lungs would let them. I still smoke 'em, enjoy 'em, too, but people lacking my sturdy, nay, indestructible constitution, are advised to heed the advice on the package and quit. Now that you can read about Camel cigarettes, that's almost as good as smoking them.

This Rules!! I have personnaly been in that house! in sept 2002. Its mindbogling...totaly breath taking you would never beleive. It's so amazing! And im so lucky to have had the priviledge of seeing everything with my own eyes...AND meeting Dr. May! :D And I owe all of this to my one and only sweetheart Stace! See her dad is the Doc's carpenter and he is the reason I had this awesome priveledge of seeing and Meeting Dr. Martin May.
