A mystery series with a strong historical setting.......2005-05-17
These Georgian era mysteries are exceptionally vivid with a feel for the details of the period that goes beyond aristocratic dress and manners. March moves confidently through various levels of society including such lesser known events as the enclosures, slavery, and the controversial rise of Methodism. Her characters are well drawn and generally very believable.
One caveat that I have, not so much a criticism of the writing as a piece of information for readers, March has no qualms about breaking the reader's heart by killing off likable victims by murderers seemed appealing and whose crimes seem almost like a betrayal of trust. The solving of the crime doesn't necessary solve all the characters' problems; there is sometimes an aching sense of futility. I assume that readers know their own tastes.
I recommend this series to people who like novels that are as much historicals as mysteries.

A SCHOOL WITHOUT GIRLS SOCCER.......2006-08-07
So-Jin is transferring to Han Shin in the middle of the year because she's bored of being at an all-girls school. Or is it because her junior high soccer rival, Shin-Bee, who beat her in every aspect of the game for the past three years is attending there. Perhaps So-Jin believes she'll finally get to play on the same team. She's in for a rude awakening though because Han Shin only has a boys soccer team, and Shin-Bee has been appointed manager of it, which really incurs the wrath of some of the sexist team members. Any time So-Jin challenges Shin-Bee, Shin-Bee never takes the bait. In fact, it seems that she no longer has any interest in playing at all! So-Jin thought that she might be leaving the game behind too, but two occurences happen which keep her from that fate. First, a powerful sports business CEO died and donated 50% of his vast fortune to form a women's soccer league and one of the first steps is enlisting his granddaugher, who is a counselor at the school, to begin looking at Han Shin prospects! Secondly, So-Jin, insulted by some deragatory remarks made by the boys soccer team, says that a team of only girls could beat them! Too bad she made the challenge without even having a team. Now she'll have to scour the school for eligible candidates.
I loved this book. One of the reasons is that while there is plenty of boys sports manga out there, this is the first girl sports manga I've read, even though technically, it's from Korea. Once again, I really loved this book. Why? Because for what it is, it was perfect. I really liked the characters, especially So-Jin, who while coming off as a bit of a tomboy, suffers from insecurities and fears, and also a desire to be the best soccer player, even if she knows she might never catch Shin-Bee. In addition to being cute, So-Jin is also very funny, and thankfully, all the jokes in Volume 1 work out well. Even the action sequences are done quite competently, and if they are exciting to me, who is not a soccer fan at all, somebody that really enjoys the game would have a lot of fun with this book. Jae-Ho Youn did a good job of making the characters multi-layered and complex. The art is great. Check this book out.
Furry sci-fi fun!.......2006-03-07
Hopefully by now, you've seen one of the definately best anime for furries, minus Inu Yasha. But before the TV series there was the manga it was based on. By creator Mee(yeah, that's his name)this post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy cop show has something for nearly any kind of furry otaku. You might be familiar with another anime based on Mee's work, Adventures Of Kotetsu, which was released on video from ADV Films a little while ago.
Set in what's called year 22 of the new Holy Century, Hyper Police happens after some disaster apparently caused by mankind, which later brings all different races of monsters out of hiding. In this new society, humans co-exist with monsters, although they are still the majority race, often treating monsters as second-class citizens. This leads to various crime committed by monsters.
Since the regular police can't handle all this, special groups of bounty hunters step in to keep the streets clean for a nominal fee. One group is the Police Company. Natsuki is a catgirl-half that works for them, and lives in a house filled with cats. She's under the care of her partner Batanen, a sex-crazed werewolf. But after accidently shooting him, she gets a new partner in Sakura who is a kitsune whose working to fill out her ninth and last tail. She so far has 8 1/3 tails, and has to consume a being of magical energy in order to be a full-fledged fox spirit. Sakura hooks on Natsuki because she believes her ability to use parasites which shoot out bolts of lightning would give her the power boost she needs.
From this point, its a little like your standard flashy action police anime. Sakura moves in with Natsuki while still trying to "eat" her. Later, the Police Company goes out of business, Natsuki and Sakura have to go solo for a while, but can't collect any bounties without a license. So they become apprentices under Batanen and his dogboy partner Tommy. The weird part is the arrival of a samurai from hundreds of years in the past(Samurai Jack, anyone?)who eventually becomes Sakura's love interest.
The manga doesn't have as much of the action as the anime did, but alot of more gratuitous fan service. Tokyo Pop did a reasonable job for a change with the
translation though.

In this popular resource, Dr. Timothy Wilens provides essential guidance for parents facing tough choices about whether or not to give a child medication for emotional or behavioral problems. A special 2005 supplement advises parents on the issues surrounding the FDA "black box" warning on SSRIs for depression in children and teenagers.

This is a must read for any parent considering medication for their child's condition--The books answers your questions in everyday terms. Easy to understand and very helpful.
ADHD.......2007-05-18
This was an excellent reference book. It had all the information about types of drugs, how to adjust them and what side effects they have. Any parent of a child with ADHD shoud read this book.
A friend in a time of need........2007-02-02
I wish I had this book over 20 years ago when my son was diagnosed with autism. Giving medications that alter the brain's chemistry to young children is as unthinkable now as it was then. I see this often as parents agonize over this dilemma in my psychology practice. I recommend this book wholeheartedly. It provides a balanced and scientific perspective that often the busy doctor doesn't have the time to do. Dr. Wilens expertise, simply and intelligently stated, provides the information that parents need to make informed decisions. This book can be a friend in a time of need. I am glad we have this book now.

Medication for different diagnostic.......2006-09-02
The most important about this book is that specified the medication for the specific diagnosis, also give you all the information about it and what other symptons can you see with your primary diagnostic, to know if the kid need an extra medication or not.
Parent or Doctor, You Should Own This!.......2006-08-25
I have two children. My son has Childhood Onset Bipolar Disorder and ADD. My daughter has COBP, ADD and Anxiety Disorder. Having both the previous edition and this edition on my bookshelf has made my life so much easier in helping me and my children's psychologist manage my children's medication. I have felt so much better when I can come home from an office visit and look up medication and see all the potential side effects even though I also look at the pharmacutical information which comes with the medication, this book makes it much easier to understand for anyone.
The book is well laid out. Part I deals with how to find out what is wrong with your child and get a diagnosis and treatment. Part II goes through the various common disorders, explaining them with examples, various treatments that may be used and volcabulary that may be encountered. Part III then handles the psychiatric medications themselves. Again, volcabulary is given; there are tables telling you generic names, brand names and what the sizes and types of the meds are (tablets, capsules etc) and he also gives more examples and answers questions about the medication that real parents may have about that particular type of medication. Every question I had in every area was answered except one or two and they involved interaction... which, of course, I brought up with my children's psychologist. The last section is an appendix which includes another list of the medications all together; an example of a completed medication log (very helpful!); a blank medication log (which I used to just make my own on my graphic program on my computer); a great list of resources broken up by type (and including the UK and Australia); an extensive bibliography (again general and then broken up by disorder) and one of the most extensive indexes I've ever seen (and I'm a connoisseur of indexes).
I highly recommend this book for any parent or caretaker of a child with any disorder which requires medication. I also recommend that anyone who dispenses medication keep a copy in their office so that they may recommend it to their clients. Trust me, you will not be steering them wrong. Along with
The Bipolar Child this is the primary book in my bookcase for dealing with my children.

Very Best Variety of Chicken Recipes. Buy It........2006-03-18
`The New York Times Chicken Cookbook', edited by New York Times director of news research, Linda Amster and culinary writer and editor, Julia Reed is akin to those CD offerings you get on TV covering `Best Love Ballads of the `70's' or `100 Most Inspiring Arias'. Almost all the recipes are by different contributors, so it has this mixed media feeling of such mixtures, or of a party or theme tape of all the songs mentioning the days of the week (I could never seem to find a song for Wednesday). This does not mean these diverse sources make it a poor cookbook. It's just that it brings different strengths and weaknesses to the table that must be considered.
First off, unlike CD collections I mentioned, I find a single subject cookbook to be inherently more valuable and interesting than, for example, non-chef celebrity cookbooks or even cookbooks from famous restaurants. When you go to such a book, you KNOW you will find something close to what you are looking for, such as an interesting new way to roast a chicken or something to do with leftover chicken. And, chicken is by far one of the very best subjects to which to dedicate an entire book, as it is cheap, nutritious, and the subject of a large number of popular preparation methods. I have already reviewed two other serious `all poultry' books. These are `The Complete Book of Chicken' by the editors of `Cooks Illustrated' Magazine and `Beard on Birds' by James Beard. The first of these shares with the New York Times effort the fact that all material was previously published and has been, therefore, thoroughly reviewed by copy and content editors and a critical public. Beard's book, on the other hand has the advantage of having been written, or at least edited, by the country's foremost food writer. The Times book has the advantage of being dedicated exclusively to Chicken. There is no space dedicated to turkey or game birds. This is a good thing, as where the average family may cook a turkey twice a year, they are likely to make chicken once a week or more often. And, they will rarely make pheasant, grouse, or even duck.
This Times book is organized by cooking method, which makes total sense. The chapters are:
A Perfect Roast Chicken with 42 different recipes on how to roast the bird, including brining techniques, roasting deboned chicken, and stuffing (yes, stuffing inside the bird!). As in all chapters, the `easy' recipes are so marked in their titles.
Great Baked Chicken with 24 recipes, 18 of which are marked as easy. Several of these recipes are really escapes from the Roasting chapter, but most are recipes for cut up, marinated, and baked chicken pieces.
Turning Up the Heat with 37 grilling recipes, including 27 easy recipes, plus five recipes for marinades.
Fried Chicken with 23 recipes, including 14 easy recipes. The biggest issue here is do you marinade first in milk or buttermilk or not. It also includes recipes for Buffalo Wings.
Steaming and Poaching Your Way to the Dinner Table may be my favorite section, as steaming and poaching are two of the healthiest and easiest ways of cooking chicken. This has 16 recipes, including 4 easy recipes and 5 easy steaming liquid recipes.
The Crispy, The Crunchy, and the Quickly Prepared covers sauteeing or stir frying chicken parts with 48 recipes, and 33 easy recipes.
The Slow Road to Tenderness covers 32 recipes for braising or stewing chicken, including 18 easy recipes. This is where you will find Coq au Vin and other luscious stews.
A Meal in Itself covers large chicken casseroles with 45 recipes and 9 easy recipes. This is where you find the ragouts, sambals, pot pies, and paellas.
This collection has the advantage of culling recipes from some of the most distinguished chefs and culinary writers from the past 50 years, including Mark Bittman, Daniel Boulud, Craig Claiborne, Tom Colicchio, Pierre Franey, Ken Hom, Barbara Kafka, Nigella Lawson, Jacques Pepin, Mimi Sheraton, and Patricia Wells. Among other things, this means you get some famous recipes such as Steve Raichlen's beer can chicken and some authoritative recipes such as Barbara Kafka's recipe for roasting chicken from her book on `Roasting'.
In spite of all this, there are some unusual omissions. The most serious one seems to be the fact that there is no authoritative recipe for chicken stock. I would think that this book would deserve at least two different chicken stock recipes, one for uncooked chicken and one for roasted chicken parts. This gap is compounded by the fact that there is not chapter on chicken soups, which strikes me as the most serious omission. Another missing chapter is one on chicken salads; however, salads do get cited in eight recipes in the index, while but a single index entry can be found for chicken soup! One other serious omission is that while several recipes require a butterflied chicken, there is nothing in the book that adequately describes how you butterfly a chicken! All of these omissions are excellently covered in the `Cooks Illustrated' volume. If you can afford the space for both books, I strongly suggest you get both and keep them side by side. A last omission I cannot understand is the fact that the book does not include a recipe for chicken adobo, which Raymond Sokolov lists as one of the 101 classic recipes every cook should know.
I also discovered some odd inconsistencies in recipe attributions, but that is only for the very picky among us. Overall, this is an excellent source for all cooks, and a great source if you happen to really like chicken. The stock and soup omissions are minor IF you already have a good book on soup making. This is the best of the three books mentioned for its variety of methods and tastes.
Highly recommended.
Great book for all occasions.......2006-03-06
Busy moms need this book! Although there are many slow recipes, there are also dozens of quick, delicious things to do with chicken on a moment's notice. I find myself reaching for it again and again. The recipes are incredibly diverse; they are all over the culinary map. The pre-recipe descriptions can be a little short, but that's the only problem I've found in this wide-ranging cookbook.

Copy Cat-Don't but this book AND An Owners Guide to.............2002-01-20
I am extreamley disapointed in this book. I can't even tell you how upset I was to find out that a large portion of this book is taken verbatim from another book I ordered from Amazon called "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet:The Maltese." The reason I bought the 2 books is because they were offered as a package deal from Amazon, and I essentially ended up with 2 of the same book. There are actual parts of this book that are taken WORD FOR WORD from the fore-mentioned book. I had to check to see if the author gave credit to the other author because I thought it might be plagerized. Inside the third page it said, in small print, "This book is a revised edition of "An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet:The Maltese." Granted there is a bit more information added and a few cute pictures but I do feel badly ripped off. So be forewarned before you buy both books; that they are nearly the same book. Also most of the information is related to puppies and adult dogs as a whole and not overly specific to the breed. There is an interesting history of the breed that I enjoyed, as well as an informative section on Maltese prone health problems. I would recommend a good puppy book for anyone interested in raising a Maltese puppy instead and find the remaining information on the breed on the internet. These books really haven't taught me more than I already learned through the internet and puppy books. Proceed with caution on this purchase.
great book. was my super hero!!.......2001-09-04
i was worrying because i was going to get a maltese but i didn't know how to train it. i got this book and when i got my maltese i tried the way it says in the book and it worked!! i really reccomend this book to maltese owners that don't know how to train and groom their maltese.
An excellent book about Maltese.......2000-04-21
This is an excellent book about the Maltese that is perfect for either someone who is bringing a new puppy home or a Maltese owner that just wants to learn more about the breed. It includes helpful advice on bringing a new puppy home and what to expect. There are chapters on food and nutrition, health care, excellent grooming instructions, breed standards, history of the breed and comprehensive behavior training. Included throughout the book are beautiful color photos. This is a must have book and definitely worthy of five stars!

Functional; No More, No Less.......2001-12-20
Patricia Veasey's "Waterfowl Illustrated" falls short of being an all-inclusive, definitive collection of waterfowl reference photos. About half the photos are black & white, and therefore less useful to carving and painting enthusiasts like myself. Many of the photos also lack sharp focus, which is practically a must for those hoping to use the photos for reference.
In addition, some N.American species are missing from the book, while a few European birds appear instead.
Still, the book is probably a better collection of photos than the ones you've taken, and as such it may be a useful reference for the better-photographed species included.
Customer Reviews:
excellent carving tips.......2000-12-31
This book should be in the library of novice as well as professional carvers everywhere. It gives a lot of tips that make carving details a lot easier.
The many pictures are extremly helpful and well done. They are close up shots that show what is being explained and leave no question in your mind as to what is being done.
More color photos of finished birds would be more helpful.
I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
A treehouse is a wonderful idea, but how in the name of creation do you actually build one? In this delightfully illustrated handbook, David Stiles, the unofficial world grandmaster of the treehouse, shows how.
Not assuming anything about the treehouse builder, Stiles starts with the basics: how to nail, how to buy wood, what kind of screws and nails to use.
Then it's on to an A-frame design so simple that it can be built in a weekend out of four sheets of plywood, followed by lean-tos, a tree hut, and a Tarzan-style jungle hideaway. There are also forts of every description, including a 21-foot-tall lookout tower modeled on one George Washington built to keep an eye on the redcoats.
Stiles also adds a design for a snowball catapult, an igloo and even a Nerf-loaded cannon.
Written for children, with an adult peeking over their shoulder, Stiles's TREEHOUSES, HUTS, & FORTS is a dreamer's handbook, offering practical results.

How to Build Treehouses, Huts and Forts .......2007-01-26
Great book if you want to build a treehouse or fort with your son (or sons) or if you just want to build one for your son (or sons) so he can have fun. Love this book and I HIGHLY recommend it.
A READER.......2005-07-09
Please don't buy this book unless you are comfortable reading vague plans and are an experienced carpenter. For all the other "Weekenders" like me who appreciate step-by-step instruction with diagrams/pictures, detailed information on techniques for their projects, discussion regarding suitable materials and tips on finishing the project (i.e. painting, etc.) PLEASE choose a book more suited to your skill level. ... I sense impending doom if I attempt to build his cover playhouse which, by the way, seems rather small at only 6'x6'. I think I will join the ranks and order Norm Abrams plans and video as well. DONT BUY THIS BOOK
Wonderful For Kids And Their Parents.......2005-05-21
Most kids, if not all, dream of building a treehouse. It is a very powerful dream that many times does not happen because the task and resources needed to build a treehouse are formidable. This book can make the dream a wonderful reality. The treehouse, of course, must be built by the kids and this book is step-by-step making that quite possible. Parents can help out with the kids permission. A parent that gives this book to a kid dreaming of a treehouse will be a hero in the kid's eyes.

Glorious and Tragic Struggles for Equality.......2000-08-10
Most books and reports on Civil War events come from white writers and voice white viewpoints. This one speaks with a black voice, as George E. Stephens wrote as correspondent for the (New York) "Weekly Anglo-African," from the events of John Brown's rebellion (Nov. 1859) through September, 1864. Along the way he shifted from member of the press to acting patriot-soldier, recruiting and then enlisting in the Massachusetts 54th, that leader among black regiments depicted in the movie "Glory." Donald Yacovone provides not only notes for the letters but also information on Stephens' family background. After the 54th disbanded Yacovone follows Stephens' ongoing struggles to educate freed slaves in Virginia; the story of many black patriots' efforts to move their people upward by finally granting them some education is not widely told or appreciated. These chapters fill a need today. So the life taken as a whole is both glorious and tragic: it's distressing to follow Stephens' hopes, from fresh optimism through disillusionment to despair, time and time again from the events of Fort Wagner to the last anguished efforts of his life. At its end he had to sue the government he'd served all his life to obtain the commission denied to him because of his race (though illegally), and provide for his wife with a higher pension. He never lived to receive it, dying in 1888 before the promotion came through. In this Stephens is typical of black men of his time, and it's deeply saddening. This is not a happy, but it is a useful, book, and a corrective for many cheap heroics about how well we treated our black veterans. We need to ponder its message today.
