A mystery book product.......2005-10-31
To sell a mystery book, you must pick a unique character, preferrably one that is "exotic" to your average bourgeois box-dweller. Then you have to find a similarly exotic setting, and some obvious case that isn't so obvious. Layer on top of that some character drama, and you have a mystery. This one isn't bad but it does not inspire to any great degree.
A Pleasing Continuation to the Series.......2004-02-29
I found "A Fatal Thaw," the second in the Kate Shugak series set in the Alaskan wilderness, much easier to read and follow than the first, and I zipped through it with great interest.
Stabenow is herself an Alaskan, and she makes you feel the very essence of the place, in all its rough and ready wildness. I felt I was there in the first spring thaw with Kate and her wonderful half-wolf dog (a bona fide character in her own right) as they stretch their winter-weary limbs. Kate has spring fever, and her very female dog, Mutt, is mesmerized by a giant and gorgeous he-wolf who can't seem to keep away from Kate's cabin.
This serenity is shattered very quickly, however, by the doings of a crazy-mad serial killer who, in one short span of a few hours, goes on a murder spree so deadly and so accurate that almost nobody in the tight-knit communty is spared outrage, shock or unbearable grief. After the dust settles, however, the real shocker sets in: One of the dead was not shot with the same gun. Somebody has used a crazy man's murder spree to cover up a real and nasty additional killing--and it's up to Kate to find out who.
I found the mystery less than the story telling, which kept my interest all the way through. This is a good, solid series, one that I am reading from the beginning, and I see no reason at all not to move on quickly and with pleasurable anticipation to the next!
Unbelieveable-Literally.......2001-01-12
Sorry, I wanted to like this book because I have liked all her others, but this was a challenge to get through for me and I was glad when I finished it. I knew who did it before I had even read a third of the book. I found Kate to be a very mean spirited one-woman superwoman. Kate had to do everything in this book by herself, did not want the help from the capable agencies in place who would normally take care of these matters, and was, indeed, insulting to any one of them who tried to help her. She broke the law by selling murder evidence she found, had no qualms of conscience about doing that, even felt she deserved the money from it. Her treatment of the Korean mountain climbers left me disgusted. What a thoroughly dislikeable character.
An Alaskan Mystery.......1998-10-13
Mystery and a peek into Alaskan lifestyle combine to make for good reading. A good plot and finely drawn characters are a plus. Made me want more of Ms. Stabenow's stories.

Assuming the identity of the gods.......2006-07-04
Fred Saberhagan reimagines thr Greek myths through sci-fi inventions in his "Book of thr Gods" series. In the first book a young boy discovers a magic mask that carries the essence of the great god Apollo. He puts it on and begins a mission to continue Apollo's war with Hades. Along the way he slowly discovers that the gods are not as invincible as one would think, and he and Apollo must be careful.
There are some serious problems with this book. One is that the war between Hades and Apollo is not well defined. Why is the war going on? I think it is to stop Hades from enslaving the human race. Next is that Jeremy takes forever to discover his powers, and that boring bit takes up a lot of time. The middle and end are very trying. But the middle is interesting, with the discovery of the Acadamy. The idea of superscience explaining the early man's myths is also an interesting idea. The other books in the series are good (especially Book 3 with Hercules), but I guess this one was a slow starter. Book one is not nessesary to understand the series, but if you must, then go ahead.
A must see for die hard fantasy fans.......2005-09-08
The Face of Apollo is a real thriller that catches the mind, another fantastic novel by Fred Saberhagen. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot line and the wide array of characters. It was nice to see a story brake from the mundane of an already high ranking character achieving glory. The farm boy Jeremy who works tending to the grape fields brings back a placid side to the development. The main characters journey threw the story was well plotted and executed so the reader wasn't bombarded with too much all at once. The ascending ideas broiling up instead until they spilled over in an array of Greek mythology and medieval fantasy. Bravo to Saberhagen and this superb novel. I'd recommend this for anyone who enjoys descriptive writers and has a flair for unique circumstances.
Typical Saberhagen .......2005-02-20
Fine by me as a matter of fact, I love this guys good. Good basic story the classic everyman or boy in this case finds a mask that endows him with the powers of the God Apollo. He doesn't know what to do so he decides after much soul searching and warring with the new presence in his head to take it to Mount Olympus.
Overall-What you have here is basically a solid adventure story but I do have one problem the ending like most Saberhagen endings is just a little too metaphysical for me. I hate books that leave it up to the reader to decide what is meant by them. A little resolution is all I ask for.

This book was absolutly awful. The central plot was just stupid, and the book was boring. If you want to read a good novel about mythology try "Inside the Walls of Troy". Throw Saberhagens in the trash.
Saberhagen again delivers something different.......2003-10-08
Many of the negative reviews do have merit. However, in my opinion, Saberhagen's greatness lies in his high concepts, not his prose. I read Saberhagen books because I am assured of finding a completely different concept than the majority of the Dungeons-and-Dragons-based or Lord of the Rings morphs that abound in the fantasy genre. And once again, Saberhagen delivers. A unique premise: the ancient gods were not immortal beings, only their intellects were, bound up in a device called a "Face". When a mortal being puts on this "Face", they become that god, without losing their former identity. What a great concept!! Thus through their human avatars, the gods continue their ages-old wars and aims. But this story os less about gods, and more about the humans wearing their Faces. It is a great story. Yes, it jumps around a bit, often confusingly. But Saberhagen solidly delivers an enjoyable read. And when you are reading something with a different concept from other books out there, you can forgive at least some of the flaws. I highly recommend this book. Try it. Decide for yourself.

This book has a lot of knowledge from a doctor who seems to know her stuff. It is helpful for me because I am getting ready to find a doctor and I will better be able to explain my situation. The book is a little bit of a difficult read, but I read it in short spurts and it is fine. Overall, it is a good book for anyone who has PCOS or who thinks that they might have PCOS but doesn't have a diagnosis. It can help someone go to their doctor and know how to tell them about their symptoms and what kind of tests to ask for.

This book is an incredibly thorough guide to PCOS, albeit from a very allopathic perspective. Vliet is clearly an expert in the realm of hormonal reproductive disorders. However, I wish it contained more info regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding and on alernative and holistic treatments. It also is the type of book that could stand to have an index.

This is a very good book with a lot of information. I did buy it for my teenage daughter who has just been diagnosed with PCOS and it's a little complicated for her to understand, so I am reading it first and giving her the most important information.

This book really holds a wealth of information about a complicated disease. There's no cure for pcos but following the advice in this book might make it a little easier to live with. This is not one of those "all natural, herbal cure" promoting books, although that topic is covered. This book is based on sound medical advice and an understanding of how all the hormones interact.

The dishes are well-explained and easy to follow. While we are not vegetarians, we do like to occasionally eat vegetable-only dinners as a change-of-pace. The recipes we have tried have been delicious.
I heartily, no pun intended, recommend this for anyone who enjoys an interesting, and probably different, taste offering to one's palate.

I have been an ethical vegetarian for fifteen years. My all time favorite vegetarian cookbook is Linda Mccartney's Home Cooking. Her wonderful recipes are enticing to the most hardened meat eater. I would recommend it to vegetarians and omnivores alike.

This book was given to me as a gift and I'm indebted to the purchaser. The recipes are obviously made with love and are easy to follow. The Lentil Soup is to die for! I've made it for work several times and everyone loves it. That alone makes the book worthwhile.

Silly and unspecific.......2005-10-13
The author spends lots of time writing about details that are great for short stories, but not for "how to" books. Finally at the end of a chapter he'll give summary advice that is vague and really not helpful. For example: ...so make sure you litter box is in a place that doesn't upset the cat.... Duh.... If you are really bored and want to read details about dysfuncional cat owner and the guy who comes in and moves the feeding dish to make it all better, then this is THE BOOK for you!
Too much of the same thing.......2004-09-03
My problem with "Is Your Cat Crazy" is that its a much thicker book than it needs to be. What information is there is good, but we get case after case of the same problems with the same solution. Probably 75% of the book is about litter box problems. There's one chapter devoted to the topic, and its a good chapter, but then virtually every other cat he encounters has litter box problems and he explains, again and again ad nauseum, what he did to solve them.
Aside from litter boxes issues, his advice is this: don't use physical punishment of any kind, distract the cat from bad behavior by throwing a toy, and administer anti-anxiety medicine or sedatives until the cat improves. If your cat is using his/her litter box, I just saved you $10.

This book explained how the kitty brain works! I was able to watch and observe my kitty, get inside her head, and give her a box she would go in!

Wow! What a great book. With a background in experimental social psychology and more than a passing interest in animal behavior, this book did a great job of applying psychological principles I've learned to cat behavior problems. Most times I don't find this in books on animal behavior.
I found this book to be really interesting. In fact, now I'm wondering if his is a career path I would like to follow. I think Dr. Wright's career is fascinating and intriguing. I really loved the way he first completely presented the cat problem to us and then gave us the solution he used. I found myself trying to figure out what the solution was before I read it. Alas, most of the time I was stumped, but after reading the solution, it made complete sense.
If you love trying to understand your cat, or if you have behavior problems, then this book is for you! It's a must if you are serious about your cat!

After growing grapes casually (ornamentally, really) for the past five years, we somehow in a drought year came up with an outstanding crop of the most delicious grapes. Seeing some potential for our 40 acres, I recently invested in a small library on grape growing and winemaking, and find this book to be first-class. It is very straightforward and gives a great introduction to the growing of grapes in general, with enticing tangents about grape propagation and breeding. I did not find the book burdened by the "organic" in the title. He offers a wide variety of solutions to grape growing problems, and while his philosophy favors organic methods, I didn't find the book awkwardly tied to only those solutions. I thought it was very balanced.

This is a very well written and easy read book on growing all types of grapes. Details of picking, planting, preparing are all spelled out in great detail. We are entertaining the idea of putting in a vineyard and this book has given us a lot of knowledge of what we need to do and how to do it.

I bought this book as a gift for my dad, and he said that it was a great resource that used a lot of plain language, not jargon. He also said that there's a lot in the book that he never plans on using, but that parts of it were really good. If nothing else, I'd say it makes a great gift for the grapes/wine enthusiast.
