Book Description
The past's blood stains the present
The opportunity of a lifetime awaits archaeologist Emma Fielding in the Berkshire foothills of Western Massachusetts: the chance to study the eighteenth-century diary of Margaret Chandler, the accused witch and murderess whose home Emma excavated only months before. However, the three other Shrewsbury Foundation fellows she must share the premises with are a disturbingly odd bunch, and before too long one of them is dead.
But Emma can find no solace in the bleak beauty of the surrounding wilderness, for there are dark secrets encoded in Madam Chandler's writings, and shocking parallels between an ancient slaying and the strange, brutal demise of her colleague. When the killer strikes again, Emma realizes her own life is at stake. And suddenly there is no choice left: she is driven to investigate bloody crimes past and present -- before her own death becomes a footnote in a chilling, three-centuries-old story.

Booked for Murder.......2004-06-22
Emma Fielding is an archaeologist. She knows quite a bit about the dead past. In her fourth outing, A FUGITIVE TRUTH, she is digging into the past again, but not the dirt. She has received a fellowship to The Shrewsbury Foundation to study "Madam" Margaret Chandler, the wife a wealthy early 18th New England patriarch and judge. Through reading her diaries and letters, Emma finds out that Margaret Chandler was accused of witchcraft and put on trial for murder. Strangely, unsettling things are happening at the Foundation. The other three fellows are a odd lot: Michael, a charismatic, handsome but moody scholar; Jack, an alcoholic blocked academic; and Faith, an acquaintance from Emma's graduate days. Faith is murdered. Why? And who did it? There are plenty of suspects: Faith's estranged husband, the unpleasant security guards, the administrative manager, the scholars, and the librarians. There's quite a bit of tension and action.
The setting of Massachusetts is nicely realized. The world of professors, scholars, and research is also marvelously depicted. Dana Cameron's books are fun! The main character, Emma, has a wry humor. There is a good mixture of pop culture references combined with academia: from American transcendentalists to Buffy the Vampire Slayer from incunabula to the Klingon-English dictionary. It's wonderful blend. It's a wonderful read.
Those who love Elizabeth Peters' books, especially the Peabody and Vicki Bliss books, will enjoy the Emma Fielding mysteries as well.
Wonderful!.......2004-04-27
Archaeologist Emma Fielding goes to a fellowship in Western Massachusetts for this mystery. Emma had recently completed excavation on the home of an eighteenth century woman named Margaret Amalie Chase Chandler. Emma becomes the newest fellow at the Shrewsbury Foundation, where she will study the coded diary of Chandler. Emma meets several people, including an officer with an attitude, a sarcastic dean, an alcoholic professor, and Faith Morgan who is a very angry divorcee.
While jogging, Emma comes across Faith's dead body. Before Detective Sergeant Kobrinski arrives on the scene, Emma sees Officer Gary Conner (the one with the attitude) messing with the crime scene and actually taking something from Faith's body! Soon the killer is after Emma. She must run for her life and, somehow, solve an old mystery.
***** This mystery will keep you guessing. At the same time you will be kept fascinated by all the action going on. The book is very fast paced and the secondary characters are extremely interesting! You do not have to read the previous mysteries of Emma Fielding. Each mystery is a stand-alone story. But this novel will make you rush out to find first three! *****

Book Description
When Ai starts to have feelings for Yota- feelings that are forbidden to video girls-Ai's creator steps in to either fix her or erase her. If she gives Yota the cold shoulder, they'll both be disappointed. But if she confesses her growing love for him, she'll disappear forever.
Customer Reviews:
YOU'RE NOT A REAL GIRL! .......2005-09-29
Yota is desperately searching for Ai in the city streets, but he's never going to find her. She has been summoned back to the Gokuruku videostore, in what looks like another dimension, by the man(?) who created her. He threatens to erase her because she's not supposed to fall in love with Yota herself, she's supposed to FIND his true love. She's letting her own feelings get in the way of Yota's happiness because Ai can never live a normal life since she only has three months of life. She is able to convince him to give her one more chance, but she cannot show any personal feelings for Yota. If she does, she might just disappear! And what's the deal with Moemi? She seems to spend an awful lot of time talking to Yota, even though her boyfriend is Takashi. This volume also introduces the incorrigible pervert and Ai-admirer, Takao Sorayama, president of the school art club and son of an important PTA member.
This volume had more emotional heft than the first volume and was the better for it. It has a lot of shojo elements but more in the male role as Yota can't really decide who he really loves, Moemi or Yota? I guess he wishes he could have both, but in the real world that never works. And is Takashi only dating Moemi to galvanize Yota into taking action with his feelings, hoping he will become jealous or angry at least? Or does Takashi like Moemi himself? There's all kinds of good emotional interplay here between the main characters, with noone really taking a dominant role in the manga. That's not a bad thing. I've even got over the late 80s horrible fashion sense that bothered me in Volume 1. Good book
better than the first volume.......2003-05-24
I thought the second volume was even better than the first. In this volume, Yota has been searching for Ai, who disappeared at the end of the last book. The mysterious man in the trenchcoat, Ai's creator, as decided to allow Ai to go back to Yota, with a few conditions. Because Ai has fallen in love with Yota, something forbidden to video girls, these conditions are hard to her to follow, because they require her to put distance between herself and Yota.
I really enjoyed this volume. Yota was much more likeable, I think. Instead of spending all his time thinking about female anatomy, he actually started to think about what and who he wanted. Unfortunately for him, this doesn't make his life any more simple, because he realizes that what he wants is both Moemi and Ai. My biggest complaint in this volume is Moemi, who seems content to let her feelings get stomped on by her boyfriend, Takashi. She's like a human door mat, but this doesn't seem to diminish Yota's feeling for her any. I found Ai to be much more likeable.
Just as great as the 1st book.......2001-04-28
Video Girl AI is one of my favorite mangas. It's got some of the most interesting characters around, with a main character that you can actually care for. There's no action or giant robots, just a lot of romance and drama, but told so it would be more appealing for guys, and not at all like a sappy romance novel or chick flick. The series is just incredibly engrossing, a lot like Parasyte(another great manga). Once you finish the last page you REALLY wanna know what happens next. Unfortunately you're in for a long wait. This is an 18 book series, and it's taking Dark Horse forever to translate and market each one.
In this book, you get to see AI's creators, who tell AI that she cannot have feelings for Yota. If she abides by these rules, her time limit with Yota will be taken away, and she'll be sent back to him. Also, Moemi's feelings are revealed, which may bring Yota's crush on her to an end. I don't wanna reveal any more than I already have. If you bought the last one, you've gotta get this one too.
Love, Tears and Videotape.......2000-12-07
Volume 2: Mix-Down continues the story of Yota "Dateless" Moteuchi, Moemi, the girl he's in love with, Takashi, the guy she's in love with, and Ai, the girl who came out of Yota's TV set to console him. Much of this volume will be new to people who have watched the Video Girl Ai anime, as it contains a storyline that was largely skipped in the video series. Ai has been recalled by her creator for falling in love with Yota and failing in her proper role as a Video Girl.
Ai eventually convinces her creator to send her back to Yota. She can be with him as long as it takes... to help get him and Moemi together. Furthermore, she must distance herself from Yota emotionally, and cannot give him the slightest sign that she loves him, or she will be erased, deleted permanently.
And so begins one of the most exquisitely painful storylines ever. No one has has a good time in this volume. Moemi and Takashi's relationship is going nowhere. Ai must keep herself distant from Yota or cease to exist. Yota's feelings are split between Moemi, who is going out with Takashi, and Ai, who has been increasingly strange lately. The only clue Yota has about the 'new' Ai is that the package for her tape has changed....
Video Girl Ai is a wonderful series, and worth picking up by anyone who enjoys good characters and good graphic storytelling.
Great second novel, and an excellent cliffhanger.......2000-10-15
Mix Down continues where Part 1: PreProduction left off. To recap from the first novel, The lead character Yota, has found out that Moemi, the girl he likes, is in love with his good-looking friend Takashi. Feeling down, Yota finds a magical video shop, where he rents a video featuring idol Ai Amano. But as Yota watches the video on his broken VCR, Ai pops out, albeit a little different from her packaging. The video has made her lose her overcute charm, her curvy figure, and she has a small swearing tendency. But even so, she agrees to help Yota, and so begins an incredible dramatic manga. At the end of the novel, something begins to happen to Ai as she continues to help Yota, and one day, Ai suddenly vanishes! Apparently, Ai has been returned to the Gokuraku video store, where her Creator has deemed her defective. Instead of helping Yota (the lead character who is commonly called "Dateless"), it seems Ai is actually showing feelings toward him, which is a major diversion of what a Video Girl should do or be. Ai's creator is ready to pull the plug on our defective heroine, when Ai begs him for a second chance. So, her Creator grants her this, with the exception that she has to follow a program to only "help" Yota, and to distance herself from him. So, Ai returns to Yota, but with the premonition that she can't even tell him "I love you." I won't give away anymore, but the ending will really have you begging Viz to come out with "Book 3: Recall" as soon as possible!

Customer Reviews:
A Little Helpful.......2007-03-12
As the title hints, the case studies in the book are so outlandish as to make it hard to relate. My kid does some things that I would like him to stop doing, but I had already used most of the ideas suggested in this book (such as be a good role model). It was nice to see that my parenting instincts keep me going in the right direction, but I stopped reading it because of the almost cartoonish descriptions of misbehavior. I think maybe some people could get use out of the suggestions if they are not put off by the premise that their kid embodies every evil under the sun.
Not so great.......2007-01-09
This book talks more about describing the bad attitudes instead of simple, easy techniques to stop them. Not easy to use, not easy to read.
An action-oriented book for parents who are sick of ATTITUDE.......2004-04-20
What makes Michele Borba's books so successful -- and so inspiring -- is the action-oriented approach she takes to various parenting topics. In Don't Give Me That Attitude!, Michele provides detailed action plans for tackling everything from laziness to manipulation to selfishness. I was particularly impressed by the material on combating cruelty in kids and, having heard Michele speak on this issue at a recent parenting workshop, I know her call to action on this issue is very much from the heart. I predict that this is going to be one of the very best parenting books we see this year. An absolute must read!
Realistic & practical ways to boost kids' character........2004-04-04
I'm a real fan of Michele Borba's books so I must admit I've been waiting for Don't Give Me That Attitude! This one is one of her best. I'm a counselor and deal with kids with "attitudes" (though most parents would call them behavior problems) -- manipulative, defiant, cheating, arrogant, you name it. The problem is there really wasn't much out there in the way of specifics to help parents. But these makeovers for bad attitudes are realistic and specific. There are so many strategies and ideas .. checklists.. resources.. and stepby step guidelines. The only thing I'd caution a parent about is not to think you have to do it all. Just turn to the attitude you think needs tuning up -- and dig in. The book is a goldmine!~
Highly Recommended For All Parents.......2004-04-04
I've read all of Michele Borba's books. To me, she stands for the kind of parent I want to be: you can't just sit back and expect everything to go well. You have to get engaged and if there's a problem you have to deal with it. I love my kid -- he's great-- but he's been home lately with a back talking attitude. I couldn't believe his flippant tone and I didn't know how to deal with it. And then I picked up Borba's new book. The great part is that I was able to go to contents, find the attitude, and immediately turn to the section and get point by point steps to do to turn it around. It's been only three days, but I'm already seeing a big change in my child. I've read alot of other parent books. Most are so filled with theory and vague generalities. The great thing about Michele Borba's books is that they are very specific and action oriented and give you real live activities you can do. Try it and you'll see.

Customer Reviews:
The definitive guide to Australian wines.......2006-03-19
James Halliday is the undisputed leader in Australian wine authors. The release of his annual Companion is an eagerly awaited event among Australian wine afficionados auround the world. The 2006 edition continues the high standards we all expect.
No other wine guide aims to be as comprehensive as the Companion, but the limiting factor is the size limit of about 600 pages. Nevertheless this book contains tasting notes of nearly 4500 of the best wines produced in Australia in the past year. Of course winetasting relies on subjective judgement at some point. Halliday's palate and taste admits a much broader range of styles than many writers who may be better known outside Australia. He is definitely not fixated on the narrow range of big fruity shirazes that command so much attention, and unrealisticly high prices, in some areas of the world.
The Companion is organised by winery of which over 2000 are listed. This number includes 172 new entries. My interest is in new and emerging wine grape varieties so I did a quick scan of the new entries as a straw poll of which new varieties we will be seeing more of in the future.
Barbera (4 new wineries are using this variety), Carina (1), Chambourcin (5), Chenin blanc (4), Cinsaut (1), Colombard (1), Corvina (1), Dolcetto (1), Durif (2), Gamay (1), Gewurztraminer (7), Grenache (21), Lagrein (2), Malbec (7), Marsanne (3), Meunier (3), Mourvedre (9), Muller Thurgau (1), Muscadelle (1), Petit verdot (6), Pinot Grigio (16), Rondinella (1), Roussanne (1), Sangiovese (9), Taminga (2), Tarrango (1), Tempranillo (4), Verdelho (14), Vermentino (2), Viognier (16), Zinfandel (1). We live in diverse times.
If you own only one book about Australian wine this should be it. Apart from the comprehensive listings there are 50 pages reviewing the latest trends and statistics, wineries to watch, vintage guides and food recommendations.

Can beer make plants grow? How about buttermilk? Or music — classical or rock? Is it true about planting trees in deep holes? And how about chasing insects with hot sauce and stopping slugs with eggshells? Remedies for all garden woes are there for the taking: the challenge is to know what will work and what won't. Fearlessly conducting original experiments and harvesting wisdom from the scientific literature, horticulturist Jeff Gillman assesses new and historic advice and reveals the how and why — and sometimes the why not — for more than 100 common and uncommon gardening practices. The results will surprise even experienced gardeners.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of fun.......2007-09-30
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a lot of fun reading how the author has gone about dismantling most of the long held garden remedies. However I cannot say I learned a lot since I was already convinced (but now I have the proof!!!) that most of them do not work
Read this before ruining your garden with "Grandma's" garden remedies.......2007-03-29
I read this book after reading several others by a so-called master gardener who recommends mixing up various potions in the kitchen. I'm glad I haven't used any of the old-time remedies, because I could have destroyed my garden in numerous ways. Beer, alcohol, ammonia used for house cleaning, and vinegar can all harm plants, although they are recommended for liberal use in the other books.
This book explains what helps and hurts your plants, and why. This will save you lots of trouble, time, and money. Ditch the old superstitions and go with what works!
Can't believe what I've read..........2006-11-06
I purchased this book because it came as a package deal with other Amazon books that I purchased (you know, the whole free shipping thing).
I checked the index and browsed a couple of topics that I have personal experience with and couldn't believe what I was reading. This book is so far off base on so many subjects I can't begin to describe. If you're new to gardening or even an old pro, don't waste your $$$.
I know that there are many ways to achieve the same results with gardening, and while some of his statements may hold truth; the general manner in which he dismisses so many proven techniques leads the reader to doubt most of his writing.
Garden Guru?.......2006-08-02
Everyone has heard stories from self-proclaimed master gardeners, this book is the mythbuster of those stories. Although, I didn't gain any knowledge of use, I aquired some history of gardening and enjoyed a fun read.
Garden secrets.......2006-06-06
Gillman breaks down every known and some I never heard of remedies to help fight against those nasty bugs that attack our gardens and how to grow a more productive or colorful one. From fertilizers to soda pop and many more urban myths and legends are revealed with a very useful rating system that your neighbor or uncle Joe couldn't offer with their sure fire remedy they swear works on their gardens. A must read for all of those who love to garden.

Book Description
This book questions the lives of Jesus that say he did not think of himself as Messiah. It argues that Jews held that the Messiah would at first come to suffer and even to die. The Messiah could not say who he was; he would act as Messiah, waiting for God the Father to announce him king. The sayings of Jesus claiming or hinting that he was the Messiah are inauthentic in those respects, yet Jesus knew he was the Messiah. He knew he could be wrong, being fully human and fully divine, so he could be tempted. He died willingly for the sins of the world. He and other Jews believed in the Trinity.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoying the Old Tokaido.......2000-09-07
I have just finished walking in the delightful, enthusiastic and quirky company of Patrick Carey, the 303 miles of the Old Tokaido. Unlike the author who was footsore and weary at the end, I felt refreshed, enlightened and keen to learn more about Japan, its history, its people and its artists particularly, naturally, about Hiroshige. Prior to reading this book, I have to confess to an almost total ignorance of the subject, so it was with a virtually blank canvas that I started to read. Armed only with copies of the wood block prints made by Hiroshige following his 1832 journey along the Tokaido, a couple of photocopied sketchy maps, a rucksack and boundless enthusiasm, the author set out to trace the old road, seemingly lost among the modern arteries of rail and trunk roads. The prints are grouped together near the start of the book and I only came to look at them closely as the author reached each one stage by stage - it was a bit of a fiddle flicking back and forth, but once I mastered marking the print with the front cover and my place in the story with the back, I found it quite practical and well worth the effort. At each stage of the journey we are entertained by historical facts, topographical notes, encounters with a variety of people all of which contribute to a good read.
