Book Description
'Depoy brings the Georgia Appalachians to life through colorful characters [and] a rich knowledge of local folklore.' -Dallas Morning News on The Witch's Grave Fever Devilin is a folklorist who fled the fevered halls of academia to return home to the Blue Mountain region of the Georgia Appalachians and a hopefully quiet life of col-lect-ing folklore. While on such a trip collecting folklore, Fever spots an apparition at a railroad crossing. These appari-tions are traditionally omens of evil and when he returns home he finds his fears are accurate: His friend Lucinda's two nieces have been killed in a suspicious accident. As he consoles Lucinda, Fever promises to investigate the girls' deaths. His promise leads him through a maze of train hopping drifters, old ghost stories, and the wild ravings of an itinerant preacher-as he attempts to uncover the truth behind the tales that are told, and the visions that are seen.

SPELLBINDING.......2007-09-15
Phillip Depoy utilizes a fluid and lyrical prose to depict a man whose fractured soul is caught between the realms of his crippling and fairly surreal past and his hauntingly eerie present circumstances. His blending of folkloric legend with the Georgia Appalachian hill-country setting that is backgound to all of his Fever Devilin mysteries results in a tale that is spellbinding and impossible to set down.
Patricia Anne Dennison--author of THE SPELL OF SAINT CYRIL'S CEMETERY and STOP THE VOICES
Southern gothic detective fiction.......2006-06-25
This thoroughly enjoyable mystery is the third in the Fever Devilin series. Fever Devilin is a folklorist and former college professor who combs his native Appalachia, collecting and recording the memories of the people who live there. His skills have come in handy at the county sheriff's office on more than one occasion, so he is developing a reputation for solving mysteries.
This time, it is his girlfriend, Lucinda, who asks him to look into things. Lucinda's two nieces were run over by a train when their Volkswagen apparently stalled at a crossing. The girls should have seen and heard the train in time to safely get out of their car.
Devilin quickly finds out that the car engine was shut off when the car was hit and that the keys are nowhere to be found. Devilin's friend, the county sheriff, uncharacteristically orders Devilin to keep his nose out of the case. Devilin runs into a deranged, vagrant minister who claims to have had a vision of a great smoking black snake swallowing two virgins in a pumpkin. As more and more people reveal that they were in the vicinity of the railroad crossing when the car was hit, the case becomes more and more convoluted.
Author Phillip DePoy has a genuine knack for creating grotesque, Southern gothic characters. The vagrant minister seems to step right out of a Flannery O'Connor novel. The asthmatic, albino dwarf, Orvid Newcomb, who may or may not be Devilin's cousin (Devilin's mother had an affair with Newcomb's uncle), is the book's best character. Three feet tall with flowing white hair, he carries a walking stick with a knife blade concealed inside. Machiavellian, brainy and over-flowing with male ego, he is absolutely fascinating. He is a miniature, sinister version of Devilin. Watching Devilin and Newcomb banter and play off each other is the best part of this novel. The passage where they leave the one umbrella behind during a downpour because neither wants to look like a wimp is hilarious. I'm looking forward to more Fever Devilin mysteries and crossing my fingers that Newcomb makes another appearance.
A fascinating book........2006-02-18
This book is not for everyone. As a reader, one must open oneself to the local culture, atmosphere and old beliefs of hill people where what's real can have a different definition. The characters include little people, a ghost, a snake-handling preacher, hobos, a junk-yard dealer with a unique musical instrument and Fever's best friend, the sheriff who is not acting like himself. The mystery is not the strength of the story. The strength is the unusual, intriguing characters and atmospheric, lyrical writing. Personally, I very much enjoyed this book and this series and want to find out more about these fascinating people.
Wonderful!.......2006-01-30
Depoy's latest work is simply wonderful. Fine characterization, sharp plotting, and engagingly written. Don't miss it!
terrific Blue Mountain amateur sleuth .......2005-12-27
Georgia folklorist Fever Devilin knows that those residing in Appalachia distrust outsiders. When he gave up the boredom of academia to return to his hometown of Blue Mountain, the local Georgians considered him tainted and treated him like an alien (see THE DEVIL'S HEARTH). Still he perseveres and assisted his friend Sheriff Skidmore "Skid" Needle on an investigation and hooked back up with Lucinda.
An accident at a train crossing in nearby Pine City leaves Lucinda's two teenaged nieces, Rory and Tess, dead. Lucinda refuses to believe an accident occurred because as she logically says to Fever that even if their car stalled on the tracks, they could have left the vehicle. Though he believes the tragedy was an accident, he tells Lucinda that he loves her (saying this affection for the first time) and will make inquiries, but he soon finds the obvious conclusion false.
The third Blue Mountain amateur sleuth tale is a terrific entry in a strong series (see THE WITCH'S GRAVE) as Fever is caught up with investigating what seems a sad tragedy. The insight into the townsfolk and the local culture is incredible; so strong that in some ways it supersedes the fabulous investigation. Though the ending seems implausible, fans will appreciate Devilin's latest adventure on his hometown turf.

Released by Marvel Comics, this one-shot,oversize graphic novel deals with a 1940's Shadow adventure. I won't spoil the plot here, but will mention that this was written by Danny O'Neil and drawn once again by Michael Kaluta(that should tell you something about how good this is).

Yes, apparently it is possible to have great tasting food that is great for your health too! The Stop The Clock! For the first time in years I am enjoying cooking again, loving the food, losing weight and feeling better than I have for a long time now.

The book also helps you understand how these healthy ingredients affect your body, all in an easy to understand format. Put this book on the top of your "must have book list"!
My New Way of Life.......2004-06-21
I am a fitness professional, and last May I attended a lecture at UCLA on anti-aging foods taught by the author. I loved everything she talked about and immediately ordered her book from Amazon. For the last month I have eaten mainly the foods she extolled (fruits, veggies, nuts, olive oil, fish, soy) and have made many of the recipes in the book. I have never felt better! In fact,I am planning on giving this book to all my training clients for Christmas. Even my husband and teenage kids love most of the recipes. Every recipe has been absolutely delicious and fairly simple to make. You may need to go to a special market that sells organic or ethnic food to buy some of the ingredients rather than find everything at the supermarket, but it's worth it. My only complaint is that she didn't include more recipes using cocoa powder. It has the highest antioxidant rating, yet she features it in only 3 recipes--none of them dessert! I hope Cheryl does a second book. Atkins, shmatkins! This is the way to eat!
It's not a fad diet!.......2004-04-27
The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends this same style of eating, with a focus on antioxidants and getting back to home-made food using basic ingredients. The book provides a lot of motivation and easy-to-understand explanations of what modern research has identified in terms of the cancer-fighting and age-fighting benefits of each food group. Good recipes too.

I have always wanted to learn about the benefits of antioxidants and this book certainly gave me the information I needed and wanted. Great book and extremely informative!! Interesting and yummy recipes too!
The Ultimate Guidebook for Anti-Aging Cooking.......2003-03-19
I bought this book because of its intriguing title and appealing cover. I'm sure glad I did. I'm beginning to execute Chef/Nutritionist Forberg's suggestions into my daily life. Not only are her recipes delicious, I feel more energetic---and its only been a few weeks.

TOWN AND VERY LOW COUNTRY.......2007-10-10
On a recent trip to America's "Low Country"(in and around New Orleans etc.) I was charmed and delighted by its fabulous foods, and sophistication. I wish this book had the same high level of civility..it does not. Good toasts should not have poetry that could have been written by elementary school children. I look to Town and Country to set a higher standard.
Really nice for gifts.......2007-09-19
This book is ideal as a gift to anyone who attends lots of social functions. The suggestions for toasts are tasteful and there's something for any occasion or gathering---weddings, funerals, graduations, etc.

Speaker's Resource.......2003-05-10
As a trainer and coach, I feel this book is a good guide for any occasion - however, it is to be used in a light-hearted vein. It actually brightened my day.
It can prepare you when someone is about to pass a witty remark - and you can give an equally witty rejoinder!
However, I feel that its greatest strength is to give speakers a good starting point to develop their own brand of witty humour.
Go on - buy the book.
A Book on How to Lose Friends and Deflate People.......2001-01-27
There are hardly any toasts in the book. How many times have you been involved in a roast compared to a toast or impromptu compliment. The title of the book is totally misleading. It should be "One Liners in Search of Their Once in a Lifetime Moment." The only persons that should buy this book is that rare individual that is involved in roasts or that even rarer person that has far too many friends. Use the one liners in this book and your friends are sure to disappear. Or you run with a really strange crowd. I know a couple of strange people that I could give the book to, but should I encourage them.
very snappy.......2000-03-27
I've read a few other toasting books because I am so in love with the art of toasting. This one not only has guidelines for coming up with your own, but also has some very nice historical and traditional toasts. The chapters on being witty are very fun to read as well.

Customer Reviews:
An incredible man, Bash Dibra, and an ourstanding book........2006-09-04
One of the things that impressed me about StarPet is Bash Dibra's demonstration of how kindness, love, and compassion with animals reap personal rewards, amd make happier pets. It could be a text-book for everyone trying to train a pet. Bash's warm, fun-loving personality illustrates how necessary those qualities are to being successful as an animal trainer. The stories he has included in this book add to the richness of its content, and provides its readers with hope of attaining positive results from practicing his blueprints of training, even for the most "untrainable" of animals.
A dog trainer who can work with dogs and people.......2006-08-23
Seeing Bash Dibra take an aggressive, stubborn dog and turn him into a well-behaved, friendly one is one of the pleasures of attending his training classes. In his books, including this one, Dibra shares with the wider public tips that enable us to train our dogs for companionship or -- in this case -- stardom. If you think your dog could help pay the rent, this is THE book to read. And if your dog is not destined for stardom -- this book can help you make sure s/he wins friends and admirers on walks in the neighborhood.
Bash Dibra truly "talks dog"!.......2006-08-18
I personally have worked with Bash with my Labrador Retrievers and I know, first hand, how incredible Bash is with dogs. He doesn't just understand how to train them to be wonderful family members. Bash truly understands dogs in a way I've never seen before. My first encounter with Bash was with my first dog, Taffy. We adopted her, as an older dog, from the Lab. Rescue Mission. Taffy came home wild and Bash not only helped her to relax and trust that life was good and that she was in safe territory, but Taffy became the type of loving pet to my family (then with three young children) that you would swear we raised from puppyhood.
Years later, after Taffy passed away, we did decide to raise a puppy, another yellow Lab. that we named Rosebud. From the very beginning, with Bash's help and guidance, Rosebud (who just turned twelve years old) has become the most amazing, well-behaved, sweet, loving, obedient dog I have ever known. AND, each time Bash comes to our home to see Rosie she just melts with love and adoration for Bash. She actually (always) trys to leave with him to go to his house!
We (just three weeks ago) brought home (yet another Lab)an 8 week old puppy named Mango. All I can say is that there is only one person in this entire world that I would EVER trust to help guide me with my dogs and that's Bash Dibra. when it comes to training dogs, Bash is just the softest, kindest, most knowing man. I'm so proud that I can say that Bash is now Mango's trainer. Please trust Bash's instructions contained in his books and on his video tapes. He's really (and truly) one of a kind. He's just the best.
any dog can be a star pet.......2006-08-17
this is a great book whether you own a mixed breed or a purebred..you and your companion animal will feel as if you are ready to compete in any dog show using the tips bash gives you in this book including behavior and attitude...or maybe become a TV star...
another masterful dibra directive.......2006-08-17
Every day I thank my lucky stars (no pun intended) that Bash Dibra has written all of the books that he has. My two cocker spaniels can roam around the back yard of our house or on a huge beach, and I know they will return on call, thanks to the training techniques I have learned in the books by Bash Dibra. His newest, Star Pet, is absolutely super, equaling his previous ones. He can teach you how to train your pet to become a star, and in addition, he is truly the trainer to the stars, (e.g., Madonna, Henry Kissinger, Sarah Jessica Parker, among many others). I have my own pet whom i consider to be a star herself, even if it is not in Hollywood--a 10 year old cocker spaniel named Abby. She is definitely a star in her own right-not in the movies or on tv , but working in a hospital with children who have cancer, brightening up their lives and the lives of the entire staff, as well as myself. Her pet therapy is a huge part of our lives. She is my oldest--I also have a 4 year old cocker as well, and without the Bash Dibra books, I would not have either one.
Dibra truly understands dogs unlike anyone I have ever encountered. It is almost as if he can read their minds and as a result, he is able to, in turn, teach an owner to understand why their pet does what it does and how to work on new behaviors and horizons, be they starry or simply "down home." Before I decided to get Abby, I read the books that he had written to learn what I needed to know about getting a puppy and training it. Then, before I got the second one, I reread everything, especially how one should go about introducing a puppy into a household where the first dog had been a princess in her environment for many years.. All of Bash Dibra's books are beyond a doubt a MUST for anyone who has a dog. Even if you are not interested in show business, these books are wonderful just for your own Star Pet.

The World of Pooh Review.......2007-06-04
I think that "The World of Pooh" was a wonderful book. I especially liked it because I love Winne the Pooh. He is so funny, and with his friends by his side they can do anything. One of my favorite parts is the part where Pooh gets stuck in Rabbit's Rabbit Hole. And when everyone throws a party for Pooh and Eeyore thinks the party is for him. The World of Pooh is a great book and it is funny as well. I could not put the book down. It is just simply amazing. Piglet and Winnie the Pooh are best of friends.
Winnie the Pooh.......2007-03-29
I love this book. Written well, the drawings are great, I takes me back to a wonderful place to be.
For the Gopher fans, Gopher is not in this, he came later in the tv shows.
Everyone should own this.......2006-12-27
If you have a kid, a grandkid, a neighbor kid, or are considering getting any of those, you should buy this book.
Get a copy to keep in the car in case you are away from the main copy at home. It is a truly great book, and you will never regret purchasing it for a single second.
An Escape From the Real World -- (written by my sister)........2004-08-25
This book is good for kids and adults. It is a great way to escape from the daily depressions in our world news. Unlike other books, it provides a fun, innocent adventure that still has the appeal to people of all ages. After a hard day, this book allows you to forget all bad - there is no evil, there is no wrong. highly recommended!
Illustrated in color and black & white by E.H. Shepard.......2000-10-07
The World of Pooh is better read aloud. Milne's characters are charming and lovable. Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends are alive in this book every time I read it, and Shepard's illustrations are so pleasing. I've read these stories so many times and still each time I can hardly wait to find out what adventures Pooh and his friends will have.

Not a complete guide; Somewhat confusing; Mostly good info........2005-01-21
Steve Meyerowitz, a.k.a. Sproutman has been sprouting since the 1970s, and owns a company selling sprouting equipment and seeds. I've read several of his books and chatted with him in person about sprouting. Sproutman knows his stuff, and IMO, anything he writes about sprouting is worth reading. I have grown magnificent sunflower sprouts by using a Sproutman Sprouthouse (a bamboo basket in a plastic house) and following Sproutman's instructions. If you have good sprouting seeds and follow the instructions in this book, I suspect you too will grow awesome sprouts.
Unfortunately, the book is not that well organized and the instructions for sprouting, a fairly simple process, are unnecessarily confusing. There are many methods of growing sprouts, such as baskets, sprouting bags, glass jars, open-ended glass tubes with screens on both ends, trays, etc. This book gives instructions for only 3 methods: baskets, bags, and trays. Sproutman doesn't explain that upfront, however. If you want to use one of those 3 methods, the instructions are knowledgeable and detailed. BUT: I suggest that when you choose one of these methods, you read through the entire chapter first, because if you try to follow along step-by-step, it's easy to mess up.
For example, in the chapter titled, "The Technique", Sproutman launches into instructions for using a sprouting basket, without first explaining that this technique just ONE of many sprouting methods. For this technique he says to soak 5 rounded tablespoons of seeds. He doesn't explain until 7 pages later that you use 5 tablespoons of seed for an 8 inch basket, 6 to 7 tablespoons of seed for a 9 inch basket, and 2 to 3 tablespoons of seed for a 6 inch basket. A beginning basket sprouter who tries to follow his instructions without reading the entire chapter first, could easily make the mistake of using the wrong amount of seeds for the basket size.
In the next chapter, Sproutman gives instructions for how to use a sprout bag, a different technique. The first thing I would want to know about this is, what are the best seeds for growing in a sprout bag? That information is there, along with days 'til maturity-in the middle of the chapter.
Another thing that's important to a good sprout book is information about seeds. What are the varities, the days until harvest, the uses and tastes, etc? There's chart near the end of the book which gives this information, but the seed varities are not in alphabetical order. I can't figure out any logic to the way the chart is sorted, so if you want to look up a seed variety, you have to read down the entire list. Also, there are some types of fairly popular sprouting seeds missing from the chart, for example, broccoli sprouts.
Although I think most of Sproutman's information is excellent, albeit a bit disorganized, one thing I take issue with are his frequent sermons about why sprouting jars should not be used. I first used a sprouting jar in 1984, and my jar sprouts have always turned out just fine, without all those immature yellow sprouts Sproutman warns of. If you are careful not to use too many seeds and to shake your sprouts back and forth so they drain well and lay the jar on its side, your jar-sprouted sprouts will turn out just fine. Also Sproutman says a jar requires cheesecloth, screens and rubberbands. Back in 1984, a decade prior to the book's publication, I used a lid which was a plastic screen and have never had to hassle with cheesecloth, screens and rubberbands. In addition, he says automatic sprouters sell in the range of $450 to $1000. It's somewhat possible that information was accurate in the 1990s, but in the 2000s, one can find new automatic sprouters for a lot less than $450.
Some of the book's strengths include the chapter discussing which type of water to use on sprouts, the nutritional information scattered throughout the books, and the presence of an index. I personally think the book's dumb puns are a strength, but I'm sure the majority of readers will not. :-)
Despite my qualms with this book, Sproutman is outstanding in his field, and I still recommend it to anyone who wants to sprout via vertical sprouter (basket), bag, or tray, or learn about sprouting in general. If you're using either a vertical sprouter or a bag, I suggest first reading the succinct review of instructions on page 173 for the vertical sprouter and p. 175 for the sproutbag.
Truly a Wonderful and Complete Book on Sprouting.......2002-09-19
This is a great book for a person who is interested in sprouting; it is very detailed and is truly full of very interesting and useful information. The book also helps to nullify a lot of the myth about toxins and hidden dangers in sprouts. The real dangers, in actuality, exist in cooked, processed, adulterated, toyed-with, sprayed, chemicalized, distorted foods (which our grocery shelves are full of). I am now 50 years old. Back in my youthful college days, I used to sprout a great deal, eating living foods exclusively. Though I stayed being a vegetarian, I got back into the cooked food craze... eating food like it was a drug for "taste" only. I work with the multiply handicapped and even though I am a teacher I have to do a lot of lifting (of adults who are not at all feather-weight). My arthritis (which runs in the family) was killing me, despite taking all kinds of natural and man made supplements. Getting back to live food was the answer I needed. Steve's book was inspirational and very helpful. I should have never deviated from what was truly the most nutritious way to eat!
There are many ways of sprouting. I happen to like the sproutpeople.com sprouters best of all. Steve's book is a priceless tool for anyone interested in sprouting... it has all kinds of neat tips and suggestions.
Also, one suggests doing a web search on Dr. Budwig's Diet... as most people are seriously deficient in essential fatty acids of the proper type. I take my oil with a little bit of live yogurt.
Anyway... I would not want Steve's book, including his Kitchen Garden book... missing from my shelves!
As Hippocrates said: "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."
Very comprehensive and helpful.......2002-04-20
Yes, as one person noted, the humor is sort of out of place. Bad puns throughout. I'm still giving it a 5 because it's the most helpful sprout book I've seen.
Friends of mine recommended it to me - they have an attractive set-up of baskets of sprouts growing in little seed-germinator covered plastic trays. They are thrilled with the book, and we are excited about starting to sprout. We did sprouts years ago in jars, but this system is better.
Though the book could be more condensed, it's still an easy read in a few hours. And where else is this vital information available in such thorough detail? If you are considering sprouting, you will find the information valuable.
Great Little Sprout Book!.......2000-02-18
I thought this book was terrific! It opened up a whole new world to me. Sprouting makes me feel like I can take part in growing my own food and can control the quality of the food I eat.
The confusing guide to sprouting.......1999-10-24
Full of confusing ideas, all scattered information, guides to nowhere. The auther tries to be witty and funny, but his jokes are nothing but disgusting.

In this exquisite memoir, novelist Guanlong Cao sketches tales of growing up in Shanghai during the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. Cao's lean elegant prose, reminiscent of classical Chinese memoirs, heightens the emotional intensity of his story as he grows from child to young man while political upheavals sweep across the background. Perceptive, humorous, and original, his voice demands to be heard -- for the historical moment it captures as well as the personal revelation it distills.
Book Description
Novelist Guanlong Cao's autobiographical account of growing up in urban Shanghai affords a rare glimpse into daily life during the forty turbulent years following the Communist Revolution. Forced to the bottom of Chinese society as "class enemies," Cao's family eked out a meager existence in a cramped attic. The details of their day-to-day existence--the endless quest for enough food, its preparation, Cao's schooling and friends, the stirrings of sexual desire, his dreams and fantasies--are brought brilliantly to life in spare yet evocative prose. The memoir illuminates a world largely unknown to Westerners, one where human pettiness, cruelty, joy, and tenderness play themselves out against a backdrop of political upheaval and material scarcity.
Reminiscent of the concise style of classical Chinese memoirs, Cao's lean, elegant prose heightens the emotional intensity of his story. Perceptive and humorous, his voice is deeply original. It is a voice that demands to be heard--for the historical moment it captures as well as for the personal revelations it distills.
Customer Reviews:
Another World.......2002-05-02
This book is captivating and full of flavor. Cao's writing style is very wonderful. When read The Attic, you gain access to a world that is not common to 20th or 21 century Americans. Cao describes his life of living in Shanghai China with very little materials but making the very best of it. The book is an excellent example of the human spirit overcoming the challenges of life. After you get into he book you just cant put it down. I would prescribe this book to anyone that would like to see into the life of mid 20th century China. Caution, this book has customs and parts of daily life that are very different from western custom. Please read with caution if you have a sensitive nature.
An excellent tale of survival and guilt in tough times.......2000-03-09
This is a very well written tale of survival. It is filled with instances of humor and triumph. It depicts a Chinese culture and a cuisine that is not, as one of the previous reviewers stated, for the faint of heart. This story shows a person that is both proud to have survived and troubled by some of the things that he did to survive. I was fascinated by this story and I was grateful to have read it rather than to have lived it.
Disturbing and dark.......2000-03-02
The other reviews mention the graphic, nauseating chapter on unusual eating practices in China - things so horrifying to a Westerner that I won't even attempt to describe them.
The reviews leave out the human atrocities in the book, and there are plenty. What this author's sister is forced to do to her hand to survive chills my blood and depresses me, even now, months after my initial reading.
Overall, this is not a novel for the faint of heart - I can't express this enough!
The chapter on animal abuse (I can't call it anything but) is the most revolting thing I have ever read, so BEWARE! If you are a vegetarian, don't even ATTEMPT this book.
Aside from the dark content, I just did not find this book pleasing; the author is a selfish creep who abuses his family. I suppose the reader is supposed to write this off as cruel youth, but the entire book leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
If you want to read something both lyrical and informative about China, try Falling Leaves, or Red Scarf Girl, or Bound Feet, Western Dress. Any of those memoirs would be an excellent read. Red China Blues is also a fascinating book, though written by a Westerner. Don't bother with this book unless you want to be nauseated by the cold writing and the graphic descriptions of animal torture.
Beautifully written, captivating.......1999-12-14
This is a great book. Although there are some graphic descriptions of some foods, the book is well-written, absorbing. One of those good, rainy day, sitting in front of the fireplace, read-at- one-sitting books.
Shocking, Tragic, Funny - Truth is Stranger than Fiction.......1999-07-14
This is my all-time favorite book. I've read it three times. I suggest it to everyone. I've found myself chuckling through descriptions told with humor, but in reality must have been very difficult situations. I've heard only one negative response to the very short chapter devoted to methods of killing and eating animals. It is very shocking. It is not gratuitous violence, it's China's very ancient way. The author did not imply that these methods were widespread by any means. The rest of the book is funny and sad and thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend it.
