Great Author - Great Book!.......2007-02-19

I have joined the throng of devoted fans of this author in general and this series in particular. Those who loved Ellis Peters' Cadfael mysteries, will find some of the same elements present here. Gregory's books are hard to put down and the humorous elements in this particular one had me laughing out loud. The ending was a bit muddled, I felt, and perhaps a bit far-fetched, but the book is well worth the read whether you like the ending or not. I have only recently discovered Gregory's medieval series, but this will not be my last one to read. I intend to read all of this series and then start on her other series'. Don't miss this one! It's a winner!

Susanna Gregory is the pseudonym of a Cambridge academic who was previously a coroner's officer. Her series of mediaeval mysteries have gained a formidable following. This book is the second in the series and introduces the physician Matthew Bartholomew to the reader. There are now a number of books in the series and they are always eagerly awaited by the author's fans.

Besides practising medicine Matthew is also a teacher at a Cambridge University and his sometimes unorthodox treatment of his patients draws accusations of heresy from his more traditional, but less skilled colleagues.

Matthew Bartholomew fellow of Michaelhouse college, and doctor of medicine is taking a journey to Suffolk with other members of the college. They are travelling to accept the gift of the living of a parish in Suffolk, where one of their companions Unwin, is to be installed as priest. They reach their destination with some relief after being beset by a number of incidents.

Their hope that they can relax a little having arrived at their destination is short lived, as they are soon drawn into a dispute between local landowners, but worse is to happen. Unwin their travelling companion and the new priest of the church is found murdered and it is not the first time that an unnatural death has struck the village . . .

In this installment, Matthew and Michael find themselves on the road in another county. They are to be taking a new priest from Cambridge to this county to become parish priest, but before they get there they are attacked by footpads, see someone hanging on a tree, and find one of their party murdered. Just a typical trip for these two dastardly heros. This is a great book like all her books. Ms. Gregory mixes history and mystery so well, it's more like a web than a novel. I find this series every bit as enjoyable as the Wonderful Brother Cadfael.

Wow!!
I swear, everytime I read these books I fall in love with them over and over again. First off, this series is probably one of the funniest I've ever read. The characters are absolutely awesome and Onizuka rocks. He just plain rocks. This volume and volume 16 have reached a stunning climax of this last story arch, so exciting that I can hardly believe there are still over eight volumes left. In the last volume, we finally find out Urumi's secret that caused her to lose it all those years ago when she was a child. Miyabi, who displayed the secret to the whole school is contemplating suicide, since Urumi's revenge was making a x-rated website with spy cameras all around Miyabi's house. Onizuka has been stabbed by the vice principal. Urumi's wants to commit suicide as well if no one stops her in time. Miyabi's webisite is being hit by thousands of computer perverts. Azusa's stalker has finally snapped and is running away with her locked in a suitcase! The vice principal has sent a fax to every parent in the city stating that Onizuka is a pervert, horrible, disgusting teacher and now the whole school is in an uproar as everyone demands that Onizuka is fired. But the poor guy can't even defend himself because he has to find Urumi before she offs herself. Sheesh, all this one volume! Its crazy I tell ya! And that's not even the half of it! This series is one of the best!

Overwhelming Help in a crisis time of need.......2005-07-22

7-22-05 -- Recently I found myself along with 3 other siblings and spouses thrust into new uncharted waters in a totally new season of our lives. Suddenly and without any training we were and continue to this day having to take care of my aging parents. I for one will freely admit that as a child I was never trained, prepared, nor exceptionally gifted to undertake such a task. It is just not the type of thing that you can ever really get to a line and say ready...set...go...and do it very well. Elderly health care in 2005 does not always afford us the luxury of any long preparation either emotionally or financially.

Suddenly unmercifully and usually without warning you hear over the phone in the midst of a busy American routine those words you dread. It's Cancer, a stroke, or replacement surgery, just minor or major operations which means weeks of homecare and hospitalization's, etc., You are suddenly no longer swinging a few bats warming up in the on deck circle there in safety at a bit of distance. But you find yourself thrust into the batters box. You are no longer the stand by just in case fill in player who dressed for the game just in case you would or might be needed. But suddenly with a phone call, you find yourself thrust without any prior warning into the batters box. You are to take charge with 3 others voices and votes, your parents primary healthcare.

Now, if you call a frantic call for "HELP" in the middle of the night when just the week before things were okay a warning, well then, you're doing better than we were. You find yourself suddenly up at the plate with bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the ninth your teams behind 3 runs. To top it off you're facing a 94mph fastball pitcher who also throws a mean slider called the reality of life. You have never been good at hitting these kinds of pitches. Much less being the homerun hitter the team needs at this moment and are all looking to you now for. Then you hear through your wife there is a book available on just such a thing. It allows you to calmly and logically check out all of your options. It tells you in simple language just how you go about walking through this difficult mine field you've been thrust into without training or any real prior warning. It tells you how to do this without losing your mind, your family unity, and most of all your parents dignity.

I found myself literally reading the pages of Joy's, "Elder Care" wonderful "How TO" book on the plane going headed to Florida. I was then going there for my Dad's 80th B-day party as well as a visit to help out for 10 days at my elderly parents. Little did I know then, that I would see those 10 days turn suddenly into 46 long and hectic days I ended up spending there. Little did I realize as I paged through this how to book on Elderly Care that it would be like a daily Bible to me. I was literally reading a chapter ahead of the events as they unfolded in the next days. It was giving me the answers to question I had not yet asked, but found myself doing so in the next days to follow.

As a former Eagle Scout, USMC SGT., Police Officer, Business owner, 20 years as a Lay Minister and being Happily Married to the same woman for over 26 years now, I'd received lots and lots of great training. Even you will have to admit that this background covers a lot of diversified and really good training. But nothing, absolutely nothing, but my Faith prepared me emotionally, physically, or all of us financially for the events that would suddenly and totally unwelcomed show up in the middle of the night. They just seem to attack you without ceasing on these issues when it's "Your Mom or Dad."

Thank you Joy, for the time it must have taken you and the wealth of information this book contains. I personally know that it was truly a Godsend at a time of crisis in our lives. It still today continues to guide us along these slippery slopes. But because of this well timed work of Mercy and Grace, we have maintained as a family, and continued to allow my parents their Dignity and somewhat their independence. I believe this book will help answer the question of the heart on elderly care and give you practical and timely information to steer you to through the minefields of elderly care life. You should have a copy on the shelf in your own homes and be reading it now, if your parents are near or reaching retirement age.

We waited and it caught us totally by surprise. But it didn't catch Joy by surprise...I personally believe that she was obedient to the Spirit of God to produce this work for a time such as this. Our generation will Thank Her one day I believe for her unselfish actions in writing this Elder Care "How To Bible" for the uniformed. The Word of God says that "...my people perish for a lack of knowledge..." I believe that this book is full of knowledge that will help us all in our moments of crisis and bring life and health to all who read it.

My mother in law needs so much care and we had no clue on what to do. We bought this book and we bought the 36-Hour day. We are completely sure now that we are making the right choices because of the tips in both of these books. I recommmend this book highly.

Excellent Professional Resource.......2005-04-30

I work for an area agency on aging in Oregon and do some work in our Title IIIE family caregiver support program. Unfortunately, in these shaky economic times, the State is on the verge of cutting a large number of our Medicaid clients from nursing home and community based programs -- and we are expecting much more of the burden of caring for the elderly falling to families than is even now the case -- so the more resources that can be made available to them, the better. Joy, keep up the good work! I also appreciated the chapter on caring for difficult parents (I've got two of them, ages 81 and 90, living in a mobile home park in Peoria AZ) -- in fact I lent the book to my sister who lives in Virginia and she found it very helpful during a trying time she had with them last spring.

The Potluck Cookbook: Classic Recipes for Any Occasion aims to bring back the traditional potluck. This cookbook includes recipes for appetizers, breakfasts, meat entries, vegetable side dishes, and desserts. There is even a recipe section that includes family favourites and examples of menus for those wanting to create a potluck.

I like the recipes in this book for several reasons. Most importantly, most of delicious dishes are quick and easy with only one dish to clean up. So very important. Also, many of these recipes can be used in a potluck situation or as a meal (or part of a meal) for my own family. I also like the variety of tastes as there is a nice choice of traditional cultural recipes represented throughout this book.

Just the word "potluck" brings to mind sharing good friends, good cheer, and good food. For years potluck suppers have been a mainstay of church events, and they're very much a part of our history. What was a barnraiser without a potluck supper?

However, in bygone days women often could spent a great deal of time in the kitchen. That's no longer true today, but we still have a yen for the friends, the cheer, and the food. "The Potluck Cookbook" holds many classic recipes, most of which can easily be prepared ahead of time and with a minimum of effort. All of the recipe ingredients are easily found in supermarkets, and the dishes are not only delicious but easily portable.

Following a bit of history of potluck suppers, this tried-and-true filled book begins with party starters, slow cooker soups, and appetizer casseroles. The always popular A-Cup-A-Cup-A-Cup Dip (remember 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup sour cream, 1 cup green peppers plus a tad of minced onion and dried parsley flakes?) is given new life with the addition of chopped black olives or for southwesterners jalapeno jelly.

For The Love of Goldens.......2002-12-04

I felt so honored when asked to provide my Golden story for this book, and when it arrived I let it sit for a few days. I was worried that some of the stories would be sad and open old wounds for me. One day I sat down and read it cover to cover and am a better person for doing so. Author Margo gently nudged each and every one of her authors to speak from their hearts in their own voices and each tale is utterly unique and beautiful. This book pays a fitting homage to the most loving and companionable breed of all time, the Golden Retriever. It is a wonderful testimony to what adopting a rescued Golden can do to enrich the lives of the adopter and adoptee.

My Golden Frosty's story in in Margo's book. I read it first when I bought it, I was so proud. Then I started reading each of the other wonderful stories and was feeling every emotion, from tears to happiness and whatever lies in between. Each and every story brought such emotion to me. There are so many out there who love Goldens so much they devote their lives to them. I am very proud to be included in this wonderful book and to have been owned by such a wonderful dog.

I bought this book before it was even released by the publisher. It is excellent! As a volunteer for my local golden retriever rescue group (GRREAT) I could relate to every story told. It made me want to be able to rescue every GR out there who needs a second chance at life. To give of yourself to save the life of a GR in need is like no other experience you can imagine. If you've ever been owned by a golden, thought about being owned by one, or are just plain interested in dogs, this book is a must. If you are thinking about being owned by a GR and read this book, you will see why you must contact your local rescue group. There a rescue groups all over the country (US).
I read it through the first time I opened it and quickly passed it along to my mom. Although she isn't owned by any dogs, I wanted my mom to get a look at why I volunteer for a rescue group and how my heart can go out to every golden in need that I hear about. Thanks to Margo for putting this wonderful collection together and thanks to all those whose stories are in this book or whose stories are just waiting to be told (hint for a sequel!). Unique collection of small homes.......2004-06-14

I like this book, and have had it in my home plan collection library for years. I still refer to the designs in this book because they are still fresh today, as compared to other similar books on the market. The layouts are livable, given the tight quarters imposed by the square footage limitation, and the floor plans are easy to read. A few of the houses are economical to build as well as graceful, unique, and stylish. Several of the houses have modern facades. If you need someting small, but have no interest in the average ranch/saltbox/Mediterranian, this could be your book.
I would not recommend it to those who want a typical small suburban tract house, or to those using Sunset plans, Home Planners, or Garlington House as a bench mark for modern style house plans.

Need more books like this!.......2003-07-29

If you are looking for some creative ideas for small homes then this is a great book. If you are looking for the typical traditional home, then there a lot of other plan books or online plan stores that you may prefer. This book has a variety of home styles with a lot of great ideas. Some are pretty simple and some are a bit outlandish, but you'll see some designs that you don't see in the regular plan books, which is what makes this book so good.

Editor is no better than the designs........2003-07-10

I bought this book because I was designing a sub-1250 square feet house for my parents, which I have since finished. I thought the book had potential until I attempted to apply some of the ideas of the "winning" plan. The winning house is not 1250 square feet. Not even close. When I contacted Mr. Metz through his publisher for an explanation, his response was that he "couldn't care less if the houses featureed(sic) are a bit under or over the 1250 advertised." I think it says quite a bit that the editor doesn't think the title has to be accurate.
Moreover, I agree with some of the other reviews that questioned the merits of many of the designs in the book. If these are the best plans, what could possibly have been rejected? I found perhaps a half-dozen plans that had anything new to say architecturally.
This book is a waste of time and money. You can get close approximations of most of these plans from the Sunset books at the library, and you won't get lied to about the size.

Disappointing.......2003-06-23

Unless you like ultra modern home designs, skip this book. The plans are impractical, especially with respect to kitchen layouts. Most of the homes have no vestibules in their entrances, which are a neccessity in colder climates.

Creative, sophisticated, and SMALL!.......2001-09-11

If you are tired of McMansions (and are comfortable reading floor plans), you will enjoy these clever and imaginative house plans. Many are designed for a specific area of the country - Florida, the urban south, the Colorado mountains, New England - which gives a flavor lacking in most generic designs. All feature the creative use of space and an emphasis on low-cost heating and cooling. I find these plans more interesting than those in Small House Designs (ed. Tremblay), also based on a competition. I am considering asking one of the architects to modify a plan for my site, as a vacation home now and a retirement home in a few years.

Fascinating Look into a Historic Period.......2000-08-14

I was quite impressed with the content and readability of Professor Rhodes' latest book. A fascinating look into the life of Ms. Shadd Cary and the social and economic climate of her time. An excellent book!
