Humorous Hair-Doings and Detecting with Sir Charles Fraith.......2007-07-30
Agatha Raisin's love life is in a mess . . . even though she's found a great hair dresser, Mr. John (the wizard of Evesham). James Lacey is away and isn't staying in touch. Mr. John is quite delicious in Agatha's eyes, but the frightened reactions of other women to Mr. John's name make Agatha suspicious. Out on a date with Mr. John, she finds her resistance melting. But Sir Charles Fraith (whom she saved from death in Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley and with whom she had a one-night stand in Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist) also wants to date "Aggie" and talks her into a joint investigation of Mr. John. Soon, Agatha is extravagantly throwing money and herself at the wizard . . . but she has some benefit because her hair has never looked better.
All of this fun is interrupted when Mr. John is poisoned. Agatha and Charles up their investigations . . . and also draw danger to themselves. They also draw more than the usual ire from the police, including Bill Wong who is being watched very carefully lest he play favorites with Agatha.
This is a confused Agatha. She makes fewer good decisions than usual and is clearly adrift emotionally. For those who like to think of Agatha as the next thing to Super Woman, this book will be a disappointment. If you don't like hair-based humor, this book also won't excite you.
Part of the appeal in this book comes from knowing how attached some women get to a given hairdresser. Turning that sometime attachment into a humorous mystery story is a good idea.
Detecting with Sir Charles isn't quite as much fun as detecting with a friendly James Lacey. There are also fewer romantic dreams for Agatha to relate. Instead, she's starting to wonder if she's just a dowdy middle-aged woman, despite younger men paying attention. I felt sorry for Agatha, and that made me realize that the character development was working for me. Before this book, I thought of Agatha as an interesting character rather than as a character I related to. In this book, the barrier finally dropped for me.
Better than ever.......2005-09-18
I couldn't put it down. The usual feisty Agatha dealing with that most closed of worlds-- inside the hairdresser. Inside the hairdresser lurks jealousy, sexual fantasy, blackmail, murder and the dark underside of small idyllic rural village life, not to mention a local baronet. A real page turner. It happily ensconced me during all 7 hours of a trans-Atlantic flight.
REALLY WELL WRITTEN.......2004-05-01
I read this book in two sittings, and it's the first I've read in the series. Honestly, I love M.C. Beaton now. So, I went and bought a bunch of Raisin Novels.
Strangely, I found 3 typographical errors in the novel, which seemed strange, as I wonder who proofed the work before publishing, but it was very minor errors like, "I think you're silly," sad Agatha. Instead, it should have been "said".
One thinks with everything done now in Windows, when you hit "spell check," it's only going to find misspellings...not incorrect words.
Other than that, it was a fantastic read !!!

A Hair Raising Mystery!.......2003-06-26
In the 8th book in the Agatha Raisin series, Agatha turns to a "wizard of a hairdresser" to repair the damage she has caused to her hair with a home coloring kit. The hairdresser, Mr. John, is good-looking and quickly charms all of his clients. Agatha soon falls under his spell, and spills her confidences to him. When several of his clients appear to be afraid of him, and then he is found dead, Agatha begins to be suspicious that he was murdered. Sir Charles Fraith, a friend of Agatha's from previous books, suggests to Agatha that Mr. John may have been blackmailing some clients, and one of them killed him to stop the blackmail. Agatha and Charles set out to discover the murderer, before Agatha gets more than just a bad haircut.
I am a huge fan of the Agatha Raisin series and I highly enjoyed this installment. Noticeably absent in this book is Agatha's on-again, off-again love interest, James Lacey and I since I am not a huge fan of his character, I was glad he was on holiday. Overall, this is a wonderful book to read if you like cozy mysteries, or want to laugh aloud at some of the troubles with being a middle-aged, single woman.
The first book in the series is "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death". Enjoy!
Enjoyable, Not Terrible.......2003-02-25
I enjoyed this installment of Agatha. If nothing else, we were spared the odious James this time round. I think Charles is better than him - at least he's true to a type! Agatha gets involved with a handsome hairdresser from a neighbouring village in this story. Then she finds out that he is not as he seems. She pieces together that he has been blackmailing middle-aged women. Agatha tries to prove the blackmail, but in the meantime Mr. John is poisoned. Agatha and Charles set out to find the killer. Agatha is really very appealing in this story. Her vulnerability is charming to me, as she tries to hide it in her usual bluster.

A book about treachery, hardship and heroism in a mystical land. There are two more books in the series after this one. I enjoyed it immensely.

A Miracle.......2007-07-18
This book changed my life and my eating habits. I have never found much help with the "diet" books out there but I had tried so many diets that I was starting to lose hope of ever getting myself healthy. I would try a diet and not really understand why I was doing what I was doing and would feel overwhelmed, and eventually just fall off the wagon. I would not be motivated into getting back on. I hated how I looked and didn't do anything to change it. I was not just looking to lose weight, I was looking to get healthy and change the way I looked at food. Food was just too important and my day revolved around what I was going to eat. It was too hard thinking about what to take and how much. I ate the wrong things and ate too much. I was stressed out and getting bad headaches and just not sleeping well. A friend told me about this book and how it helped her. I am so happy I have a friend like her. Reading this book along with the "diet" was so helpful and The excersise was so simple but so energizing. It has become a nightly ritual that helps me relax and recharge. Dr. Lu really helps you to understand that fixing your body from the inside will change your body on the outside. I started reading the book and was thinking how can what he tells me to eat be helpful when the portion is so small?....it really is amazing that I used to consume the amount of food I used to when now, I eat a smaller amount and have never felt better. I am not being weighed down by all that food and I feel lighter. Dr. Lu takes the guess work out of it and so I don't have to feel stressed about what to eat. I "gave back" 4 pounds in my first two weeks and I am now in week four and am so excited to see where I go from here. I have never hung in there this long before and I can't wait to finish. I have already seen a difference in the food choices that I am making and I am doing it because of how good the food is and how good it makes me feel. Dr. Lu doesn't make you feel bad about yourself, or put harsh demands on you. You really do feel better that first week. If you feel hopeless and feel stressed out or get bad headaches (like I USED to)read this book and change your life, and your future.
Only one caveat..........2007-07-12
Clearly written, non-judgemental and easy to follow, my entire family has been preparing for and following this program for 3 weeks (5 weeks to go for the full effect). We all feel better, have fewer symptoms (sinus/headaches/lethargy/etc) and except for my 14 year old daughter, feel satisfied with the amounts and types of food we eat. She eats more and is becoming much more discerning about what she really wants to eat and when she's had enough, as are we all. The focus is all on re-training yourself to pay attention to your body's signals and of course to reset the body's systems so that you can trust your "desires" will be exactly what is healthful for you.
The caveat is that without the DVD of the Qi Gong exercises, you will *never* figure out how to do them correctly. The stills and descriptions in the book are woefully incomplete.
A valuable addition to my health library.......2007-06-24
Anyone who thinks they can learn qi gung from a book should have their head handed to them. Sorry, you need someone live to correct your form to get the best results.
That said, this is a good book for people who want a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Lu may be too far out there for most people, but I love an Asian approach to health. The book needs study. It is not an easy read for people who know nothing of martial arts, oriental health techniques or qi gung. The effort is worth it if you can stick to the spirit as well as the letter of the advice. It is deeper than it seems.
I think Feed Your Tiger by Hadady is a good complement to this book because it also deals with Chinese energetics but uses simple recipes and an eating plan that can be adapted to any diet.

This book has a good variety of dishes to choose from. They are easy to prepare and most don't require a lot of preparation time. Every thing from the main dishes to the desserts are delicious. Even though every recipe has a name brand ingredient, store brands work just as well in their place.

I thought the above comment was absolutely ridiculous. What people want to know is if this is a good cookbook. I don't think anyone is interested in if brand names are going to be the future of culinary arts. Broken down: good recipes, use generic if you are opposed to "brand names." The recipes range from fast and tasty to complicated and savory. I love this cookbook.

I have owned this book for years now and have never made anything from it that was not yummy!! I usually ignore the actual brand names and just use the brand that I like or that I feel is the best quality. My mother and sister also own this book and they both love it, too.

With all the new channels for distribution available and considering all of the innovations in communications (both message and medium) the stakes are not only increasing rapidly -they have been moved. My opinion, the future will very likely be populated by brands that are defined less by big marketing firms and more by real people. This book seems to be ignoring the future.

I have a collection of cookbooks and so do my mother and sister. We all agree that this is our very favorite. I have yet to make anything out of this book that was not delicious. Of course, I do not always use the exact brand that they recommend, but the recipes are fantastic! I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who enjoys cooking.

I have had this book for ages and it is always one of the first that I pull out no matter what I'm cooking. It's out of print now but every once in a while you can get one here on Amazon, or through one of their Z-Shops or auctions. DO NOT HESITATE to pick this up. There are a lot out there that aren't as good as this one...
Has EVERYTHING from Beverages to each Meat entree. Using Brand Name products that makes shopping easier. For instance a recipe that I always use is there "Sour Cream Cheesecake" or perhaps there "Majic Cookie Bars" Delicious.

Disappointing.......2006-10-12
I was disappointed with this book because I expected more substance on how to cure cat behavioral problems. Most of what was presented in the book was common sense. The book also doesn't offer any in-depth case histories and therapy plans for cats with particular problems.
I feel this book would be useful for someone who knows little about cats. However, if you are familar with cats and their basic needs, this book doesn't offer much more insight than most people would know. I expected more from a well-known behaviorist.
If you are really looking for an in-depth book on pet behavior that is more useful, read Pam Johnson-Bennett's "Psycho Kitty" book. I found it to be absolutely excellent.
A common sense book.......2006-09-21
Because this is basically a common sense book I didn't find it helpful in dealing with my new kitten who is extremely loving and very curious. Her curiosity leads her to places where she should not go;n the author of this book tells me to put things away I don't want the cat to get into. To me this is not exactly the advice of an expert. I expected to learn how to teach a cat. The book does do what the title states; it does not do what I wanted. My mistake.

I've never loved a cat before. My two dogs and I were bemused when a stray cat started following us around on our walks, eventually darting right ahead of us as we returned home, to be the first one in the door. Fortunately a friend gave me a copy of "The Total Cat" by Carole Wilbourn. My basic questions about feeding, litter box, and vet vists were answered briskly and sensibly. Then it got complicated when a second cat decided to move in. Carole's book walked me so carefully through the psychology of bringing the new cat into our family that it was painless. I turn to this book whenever a new catly situation arises and it hasn't let me down. Carole Wilbourn is either part feline herself, or has been a cat in a past life! Great book.
Helpful and Interesting.......2004-06-05
Ms. Wilbourn knows and loves cats. So do I - I've been a besotted cat person for over three decades. I was interested, therefore, to find that she had some things to teach me. She starts at the beginning with what you should decide before getting a cat. She then takes you through the course of the life you and your cat(s) share. She covers all the basics as well as problems which may seem unlikely but for which you'll be glad to have Ms. Wilbourn's advice. THE TOTAL CAT is clear, affectionate, and diverting without that nasty failing of so many "cat books" - cutesiness. I currently have three cats, all of whom dislike each other but, with Ms. Wilbourn's help, we are steadily working things out.
Best animal behavior book I've ever read.......2004-06-02
This book has been an excellent reference manual for me. I refer to it when I have basic animal care questions as well as major animal behavioral concerns.
Carole's guidance was very helpful when I brought a new kitten into my home. Tending to the older cat and letting him bond with the kitten is very valuable information and leads to a more adjusted animal pairing.
I have a very anxious cat who was resistant to any treatment from a few vets or previous animal behaviorist. She suggested that I sequester him so that he can feel safe and protected. I was hesitant to do this as it felt cruel. After trying it, it was obvious that he really needed this type of intensive care. Her suggestions have helped him to feel more secure in his environment.
I am so confident about her intuitive feline gift that I have also hired her as my cat's behaviorist.
I enthusiastically recommend Carol's expertise and guidance.

... It is a WONDERFUL book, full of very clear large photographs ("over 830 color photographs"). I bought this book in London and had to carry it home to the U.S. It is big and heavy, but it was worth it. If you appreciate the style of Liberty and Co., you need this book.

Not useful for the gardener or landscaper.......2007-09-19
This book is intended for plant scientists, and I was astounded to find how useless a gigantic tome like this can be to a gardener. For starters, in 1188 pages there are zero photos. There is zero color. There's a huge number of amateur black ink drawings that suggest major details of leaves, etc., but no refinements. For visual identification purposes this book is near-useless, so it cannot be thought of as a woody plant encyclopedia. Also, the author has a peculiar manifest of political correctness: he won't speak ill of a plant. So, for example, the discussion of Rhus never mentions that at least three species (poison ivy, oak, sumac) are known for inducing allergic skin reaction after contact. You'd better know that and be able to recognize these because to Dirr that's unmentionable. Nor can I find mention that any berry, leaf, or bark is poisonous though to be fair, I didn't check all 1188 pages. Nor will I; I exchanged my copy for the same author's "Hardy Trees and Shrubs" which is what I should have bought to begin with. It has everything the scientific Manual lacks. That's Dirr's book for gardeners, and still gives you a taste of his political correctness peccadilloes.
Dirr is the Most Comprehensive.......2007-07-05
I am an OSU Master Gardener and we are taught to look to the best experts when we research information for ourselves or to give out to the public. This book, Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants" and Carl Whitcomb's "Know It and Grow It III" are the best references a person can use when researching woody trees and shrubs for a landscape. Although Whitcomb's book has a map showing regions where the plant would grow best, Dirr's book has by far more trees and shrubs reviewed with more cultivars listed also. Additionally, Dirr's book is listed entirely by scientific name making it easy to locate information about a plant quickly.
"Manual" is the right name for this book........2007-03-06
I bought this book because other books that I have by Dirr are worth every cent I have spent on them. This book is no different. No glossy pictures are present, but instead there are excellent, detailed line drawings of the identifying features of plant leaves and twigs. What this book does offer that other books I have read do not, is exhaustive information on just about every woody plant one might ever encounter. This book is a true "manual"; it is packed with information on every aspect of selecting, planting, managing, and propagating woody plants.
I doubt this book is essential for the casual gardener, but if you want a serious treatment of trees and shrubs for reference, this book is just what you are seeking. I bought the hardback because I knew that this is a book that will need to take years of abuse.
The best textbook I've ever bought.......2007-02-26
Easily worth ten times the price; an indispensable guide for any horticultural student. Contains encyclopedic knowledge, written in a friendly and approachable way. My copy is already tagged with post-its and notes in the margins; I will no doubt be using this regularly for my whole career.

This is a wonderful book for those with at least moderate plant knowledge. Very valuable for looking up the difference between varities, but there are no color pictures.

The classics of medicine version of this book based on the 1628 original publication is by far the most desirable edition of this book, (short of owning the original, not likely for most of us) here is your opportunity to own a handsome facsimile of the original book,
This special edition books were printed in 1978 for members of the classics of medicine library, these were numbered books and they are difficult to acquire below the number 10,000 we currently have number 3758 available, this would be a wonderful edition to any collection.

The short and unpretentious work here presented for the first time in digital format is one of a handful of undoubted classics in the history of Western scientific thought. Its English title is perhaps best rendered as "Anatomical Exercise on the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals," where "Exercise" has the sense of a formal academic argument; it is universally known to scholars by the abbreviated form of its Latin title, De Motu Cordis. Because it is brief, exquisitely well argued, and relatively nontechnical, De Motu Cordis is very probably the one and only great classic of Western science written before 1800 that is still widely read today.
The publication of De Motu Cordis in 1628 marked the overthrow of a tradition of scientific explanation that had endured for almost 1,500 years, and introduced within the biological sciences a convention based on close observation and direct experimentation. Harvey's rigorous and convincing logic yielded not only a statement of an epoch-making scientific discovery (the circulation of the blood), but a fascinating study of how an investigator should conduct experimental inquiries, and how to construct a maximally persuasive argument. There is remarkably little that one can point to, even 375 years later, that is factually "wrong."

A definite must-have!.......2000-04-21
An excellent resource for the serious historian and the casual collector alike, this remarkable digitized manuscript provides fully searchable text in both Latin and English. I was hoping for the Chauncey Leake translation, but who can argue with the "first English text of 1653!" PDF format offers intuitive navigation, and I can't say enough good things about the copy and paste-able text which made paper-writing a sheer delight. Original diagrams as well as the full Latin and English texts are printable. A treasure!
