Book Description
In 1979, science fiction and horror were brought together in director Ridley Scott's classic film Alien. The film follows the crew of a space cargo-ship, the Nostromo, who land on a hostile planet in response to a faint SOS only to discover an abandoned ship with a ravenous alien on board. Alien inspired three movie sequels, and now Aliens: Original Sin expands further on this classic story, bringing back characters like Ripley 8, the clone of Lt. Ellen Ripley, and android Call. It also sorts out unanswered questions from the movies and raises entirely new ones. Was it just coincidence that the Nostromo happened to pass by the desolate planet? Why was the alien on the crashed ship in the first place? The answers, along with intense action, chilling horror and even deeper questions await in suspense virtuoso Michael Jan Friedman's Aliens: Original Sin.

Utterly hopeless trash-fiction.......2007-08-30
I always keep my expectations set very low when reading pulp, sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, but most of the time I am amazed that such crap ever makes it to press. Aliens: Original Sin is one of those occasions. It honestly one of the most boring and uneventful books I have ever sat down and read.
Even at a very short 250 pages, with not many words on a page, I found it very slow and without even a single memorable moment. No good action, forgettable characters and no sense of mystery or dread. The ONLY reason I am giving it 2/5 is that is stays true to the Alien lore and doesn't make up its own history like Dark Horse's Predator: Forever Midnight, which seems like Charles Dickens in comparison to this tripe.
Do not buy this book.
Excellent read for an Aliens Fan.......2007-04-24
Great read for any scifi/horror fan, a very decent storyline and continuation from where Alien Resurrection left off. Excellent story, characters were perfect. More books like this should be written.
A SOLID CONTINUANCE FROM WHERE THE 4TH ALIEN MOVIE LEFT OFF!.......2006-08-08
I have read Alien books that had more gore than this. I have read them with more chills and action too. However, I am thrilled at the fact that this book continues the plight of Ripley and the crew of survivors from "Alien Resurrection". I was also surprised at some of the explanations of things that we all thought we knew or had never been told. I am looking forward to the next installment. The crew are as colorful as ever and I am interested in more revelations. My only knock is that in the book, a lot of people died without the gory details. That is all part of the fun, so it should never be left out. Can't wait for the next one!
The only sin here was publishing this mess.......2006-06-11
It seems the Alien franchise is fated to be shuffled from one indifferent writer to the next. From films to books, there hasn't been much worth seeing or reading since James Cameron's "Aliens" or Steve Perry's "Earth Hive."
Here in "Original Sin" we get Michael Jan Friedman, writer for franchises such as Star Trek and DC comics, borrowing bits and pieces from the previous films to cobble together a fairly run-of-the-mill Alien story: an isolated group of humans is exposed to a pod, one is impregnated, and soon all the rest are dead. In between, Ripley and the crew of the Betty arrive to help isolate the infection and kick some Alien ass. Done well, it would have been a serviceable novel. But there are simply too many gaps to fill and the novel looks like a house where plywood has been haphazardly hammered into place to try and keep the thing from falling over.
Picking up where "Alien Resurrection" left off, the Betty crash lands in New Zealand, and is put back into service under Ripley, Call, Vriess, and Johner. A couple of other crew members are on hand and the first half of the novel has them slinking about collecting information for purposes that don't become clear until the second half. Along the way the crew also picks up a journalist whose only purpose seems to act in later chapters as prey.
In a major revision of the Alien universe [SPOILER] we eventually find that Ripley and company are hunting a shadowy organization they call Loki, an extra-governmental cabal that has for more than 200 years been in secret contact with the Mala'kak, the giant alien spacefarers (sometimes referred to as The Pilot Race or The Space Jockeys) the Nostromo discovered on Archeron in the first Alien film. It appears there has been a compact of convenience between the Loki and Mala'kak in which the former provide human hosts for breeding Aliens, from which the Mala'kak extract DNA to help treat infertility. In return, the Loki get Mala'kak technology. Besides the fact that it would be impossible to keep such an organization secret for 200 years, the whole idea that live, sentient humans are required for this process is never explained. Why not just replicate the Alien DNA? Assuming that is for some reason impossible, why not create and grow fully functioning human torsos to serve as Alien birthing chambers? And while we're at it, why without explanation do we have a new breed of Alien that can produce multiple offspring from one face-hugger, and which can reach maturity within an hour? And why don't the colonists notice while they've got him in their medical facility that the face hugger has made a deposit in their comrade's stomach? [END SPOILER]
Besides fairly mucking up the history of the Alien universe, Friedman manages to run Ripley and her companions further into the ground, burying them in a hole of cliché. Resurrection wasn't known for its witty dialogue or finely drawn characters. It's perhaps even worse here. Friedman never bothers to explain or even hint at why the crew is motivated to search for Loki or spend its days hunting down aliens. For characters portrayed so hopelessly self-motivated, you can't help but wonder why they all didn't run off as soon as they got back to Earth.
Pity the writer who has to come after and deal with this mess. The best thing that can be said about "Aliens: Original Sin" is that at 250 pages it is mercifully short.
Alien Borefest!.......2006-06-07
I really, really, wanted to get into this book - but after halfway thru it - I was left utterly bored. Too bad, too.
I liked the last Alien movie, Alien Resurrection, which this novel starts out at. Sure it had its problems, but overall it was a slick action sci-fi movie by a French filmaker. (Maybe that was the problem? Lol!)
But this author's writing style didn't capture the essence of this franchise. You need to grab your readers by the throat from the get-go. Unfortunately, it didn't happen here. Nor in subsequent chapters.
Being a huge Alien and Predator fan, I was sorely dissappointed.
But I see there's a new Predator novel out! I will definately read that and check it out. The synopsis sounds excellent. We'll see...

Awesome!.......2006-08-08
This is a riveting story, and one I'm glad to find on Amazon! If you liked Wastership Down, you'll love this story. The horses are portrayed in such a realistic fashion that you'll never watch two interact in the same way again!
Unforgettable.......2005-12-30
Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West and its sequel are indispensable books for both fantasy lovers and horsepeople. Many reviewers have commented that Heavenly Horse was a lot better than Piper but I thought they were both excellent. There are not many books I will stay up all night for but this one and Piper I had too. The Dark Lord and his followers are truly horrific and the good characters felt like friends by the time the book was finished. Mary Stanton must be a very imaginative person or, an avid horsewoman. She seems to understand horses as well as the author of My Friend Flicka and its sequels. All of these stories aren't just for kids, but for adults as well. I enjoyed it just as much at nearly 30 as I did at 10. However, it was a lot scarier to me when I was a child. Probably more suited to teenagers.
Why No Animated Movie?.......2004-11-11
This is a truly epic read.
I would even venture that people who have no interest in horses should pick it up and get stuck in.
Like most of the reviwers here, i was first introduced to it as a teenager and have gone back to it countless times since.
Anyone that enjoyed Watership Down, or indeed epics such as The Hobbit, should consider getting hold of a copy (i've just purchased my second copies of both 'Heavely Horse' and 'Piper' - the urge has come to read tham again and just i can't wait long enough to pick up my original copies from my mums house!)
One thing i don't understand is why an reputable-but-edgy animation studio (Blue Sky, or Brad Bird - are you reading this?) has not spotted this book's potential and made a film out of it. One reason could be that some of the characters are truly terrifying, and they would find it difficult to rate as a result (yes boys, there's plenty of eerie - not to mention downright horrific - stuff happening here; so, as many readers have mentioned, don't let the title put you off!)
Finally, for the benefit of those that are not overly keen on the fantasy genre (of which i am one!), it should be mentioned that this book is not purely fantastical. It has a strong grounding in reality and day-to-day issues such as animal cruelty. This make it all the more compelling.
Read it.
i luvvvvvvvvvvvv this book!.......2004-06-23
The title was abit odd, but as soon as i read it, i was crazy for it! Duchess ,Susie, and El Arat were only some of the rich characters featured in this book. (WARNING SPOILERS!) i totally cried a river when Susie died and was totally shocked to find out about El Arat being evil. after the billionth time i read it, you start to see clues to her dimise. an awesome book do not pass up!
For Equine Lovers Everywhere.......2003-10-27
This book was amazing. I loved horses to begin with, but after reading Mary Stanton's work of art, my love for them grew. Her novel showed me a new way of looking at the lives of horses and helped me in my own writings. This book is a MUST for any horse lover.

Great sensible book for facing modern relationship dilemmas.......2006-05-03
I have read this book several times and never cease to come away with a new understanding. It has depth, compassion and useful information for moving through some of the modern relationship dilemmas that cause so many of us suffering.
John Welwood is a Ph.D. psychotherapist with a deep knowledge of world religions, especially Buddhism. He also has a lot of life experience and has written many books on a variety of topics including other relationship books.
One of the things I most like about this book is the author's ability to apply both modern psychological thought and Eastern philosophical wisdom to modern day problems. He does this in an easy to read fashion with a compassionate tone. He does not come across as omniscient, but rather as a fellow traveler on the relationship path of spiritual growth.
I believe relationships are probably the best or at least one of the best self-growth paths anyone could ever follow. John Welwood shows us how to hold them as such in this marvelously insightful book.
I also recommend his book called "Toward a Psychology of Awakening." This book is subtitled "Buddhism, Psychotherapy, and the Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation." This would make a nice accompaniment to the book above, but the content is heavier and so is the style. However, it is packed with great information and it represents some of John Welwood's best writing.
I particularly like Welwood's insights on "spiritual bypassing" or escaping our psychological and emotional work by overly emphasizing the transcendent and dismissing the wisdom of embodied experience. I'm sure glad a guy who is writing relationship books holds this point of view because as anyone knows who has been in a committed relationship, there are lots of important ingredients to a good relationship beyond the spiritual considerations. The phenomenon of spiritual bypassing is explored very directly in "Toward a Psychology of Awakening."
Journey of the Heart by John Welwood.......2005-10-24
Have read many books on relationships. This is one of the best and should be at the top of the list for anyone interested in an intimate relationship.
Can't Go Wrong.......2002-10-06
I first read Journey of the Heart fifteen years ago--and to this day it is the best book I have read on the topic of love and relationships. Welwood's succinct, penetrating insights into these topics, and into relationship as an actual spiritual path (in the same way that yoga is a "path") helped shape my views in a profound way. Can't recommend it enough.
Great book about loving.......2002-03-11
This is one of my three favorite books, together with "The Wild Girl" by Michèle Roberts and "The Continuum Concept" by Jean Liedloff. It's about how to deal with the great challenges of an intimate relationship, and it considers the heavenly realm as well as the earthly realm. I couldn't imagine any better guide for this vulnerable territory. Very helpful!

Joanne Lamb Hayes offers a sentimental collection of recipes for baked goods created during World War II in Grandma's Wartime Baking Book, her follow-up to Grandma's Wartime Kitchen. Because butter and refined sugar were hard to come by and rationed, and the thousands of married women who joined the work force were still expected to continue running their households like tight ships, these recipes for cookies, tarts, cakes, and breads are low in fat and refined sugar, very quick to throw together, and couldn't be any easier to make.
Expected to work all day, serve fresh, hot, nutritious meals on beautifully set tables, keep lush victory gardens bursting with nutritious fruits and vegetables for eating and canning, and always present themselves impeccably dressed and coiffed, there were not very many free moments in the day. So just a few minutes is all it took to get an Apple Coffee Cake into the oven, and the result is a remarkably tender, upside-down apple cake, dripping with a warm brown sugar and spiced apple syrup. Other desserts such as rich Peanut Butter-Chocolate Cupcakes and Butterscotch Squares thrilled families back then as much as they do today. Even the most old-fashioned of these recipes fit nicely into today's lifestyles. The ingredient lists are short and inexpensive--you probably already have most of the ingredients in the house. The results are comfort food at its best, and none of them take any time at all to put together. Taking a stroll down Memory Lane with Hayes is surprisingly delicious. --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
illed with recipes and illustrations from the period, Joanne Lamb Hayes's book pays tribute to the ingenious and patriotic ways American women baked for their families despite food rationing and other pressures of wartime. Adapted for today's cooks, the recipes include old-fashioned cakes, cookies, pies, cobblers, and other delights. Anyone interested in the Greatest Generation, women's history, and comfort desserts will relish this valentine to an unforgettable chapter in our history-as seen from the kitchen.

A fun cookbook and a bit of history.......2005-07-05
The previous reviewer did a wonderful job in summarizing the chapters of this book so I will refrain from repeating and instead will say that this book is a "good read".
There are those out there that like to occasionally peruse cookbooks (and you know who you are) but in this case there is more to think about than whether you have all the ingredients on hand. It is interesting to contemplate how much WWI and WWII affected our culture and how adaptive our forebearers were when shortages occurred. There are plenty of examples of propaganda, ration cards and excerpts from women's magazines to keep one up at night or dawdling at the kitchen table over coffee.
Enjoy!
ps -- I have made the cocoa icing and the marshmellow topped cake and both came out well.

Classy book.......2004-04-29
This book, discusses food prep, rationing and offers a historical prospective to foods prepared and served during WWII. Rationing is well explained here. I became interested in WWII cooking after I read that diabetes, obesity etc levels DECREASED during the war years. I feel this is due in part to the rationing of fats and sugers. Grandma's Wartime Baking shares baking recipes that are lower in fat and sugar. Lemon, Huckleberry, and bread puddings are included here. The cookie section offers lower sugar treats such as Gingersnaps, Apple Butter, Carrot, and Prune cookies. The oatmeal icebox cookies are good as are the butterscotch Bars. 18 Cookie recipes are in the book. Also another factor is the lack of time many women experienced- a result of women going to work. Most of the recipes are not time comsuming. The muffin chapter is impressive. Muffins and quick breads were the ideal solution for busy moms in the morning. Applesauce muffins, Popovers, Orange Marmalade Bread and Quick Cheese Bread are only a few of the offerings. Other chapters include Celebration cakes, (wedding cake is here) Cakes, Cobblers, Pies, and on and on. The cover jacket is charming, with a WWII look to it and red checkered edging. 5 stars from me.

Boring waffle dressed up in high-falutin' language.......2005-10-14
I agree with the Canadian reviewer. Jibber jabber. This book contains a lot of statements that are perfectly obvious to anyone with a crumb of commonsense. Dressed up in lots of fancy verbiage and selling it as a book.
I give it one star more than the Canadian reviewer for the simple reason that some of the information might be useful to ladies who learn to ride later in life, if they are not very aware of their body.
I was VERY disappointed in this book. Its review led me to believe I would learn philosophical truths, tricks and tips to enable me to adapt my aging body to continuing riding, and other important and useful information. Instead I read that badly-fitting saddles cause discomfort and that as I age I can expect to become less supple. Should I pay money to read that? I don't think so!
Extremely Dissapointed.......2005-03-21
I really found this book to be a big BORE!! I was looking more towards a fitness program of some sort but instead found myself reading through jibber jabber that never really got to the point...FITNESS AND PERFORMANCE.
Good book on improving riding skills and physical condition.......1998-03-05
This book is somewhat esoteric but does have some very good exercises for the equestrian. The author discusses how the rider's physical condition can improve riding ability and position. Also how other factors, such as poor balance and bad saddle fit can cause pain for both the rider and the horse. She explains how common training myths and rider interpretation contribute to physical discomfort and what the correct response should be in order to maximize rider/horse communication. She also covers common injuries and their causes, proper saddle fit, diet, pregnancy, and aging.
A great book for female riders!.......1997-09-09
A series of tips signaling key points on health, fitness, nutrition, safety, and comfort.
Discusses:
* Biomechanic and anatomical considerations for women. ( I would have bought
the book just because of these words!)
* Stretching and Strengthening exercises to enhance riding performance.
* Techniques to gain more performance with less effort.
* Saddle balancing and fitting tips.
* Safety tools.
* Riding and its relationship to aging, pregnancy, and lifestyles...
( would have bought the book just for that 1st "A" word in this phrase....)
* Nutrition and dietary factors in daily riding and competitions.
"The author takes us through the changing dynamics of women on horseback,
arriving at a new approach to riding effectiveness. Women now represent
over 80% of today's horse enthusiasts and riders. The techniques, equipment and
teaching methods used with horses, however, have not moved in step with the
growing involvement and influence of adult and young women... until now."
That's just the stuff on the cover!
Here's another reason why I bought the book... calorie expenditures:
120 lb female grooming a horse for 30 minutes =207 calories!
galloping for 20 minutes =148 "
trotting for 30 minutes =177 "
walking for 10 minutes = 22 "
Hey! this mythical creature expends 554 calories/hour!!! amazing! In
comparison to to other high activity sports like real swimming,
cross-country running, galloping is next. Then tennis, then HORSE-GROOMING. then
trotting is down 2 more categories including medium to low impact aerobics and snow
skiing! Walking is pretty low down on the list... just a bit lower, though
than sweeping the floor!
Shock! We are in a high calorie burning, high energy activity!
Ok, that's all the sneak preview you get!
There are many more surprises and new thoughts in here for you to stumble
into and exclaim.. AHA! or Wow in a reverent tone!
Book Description
Shiny green cucumbers; firm, juicy tomatoes; baby lettuces handpicked one salad at a time—these are the tasty benefits of the backyard vegetable garden. But earth gardens are a lot of work. They require a plot of plantable land and a significant time commitment to sowing, watering, weeding, and tending each plant.
Is there a solution? Self-watering containers allow vegetable gardeners—from the casual weekender interested in a tomato plant or two to the very dedicated gardener with limited space—to grow richly producing plants in a controlled, low-maintenance environment.
Lifelong gardener Ed Smith became fascinated with the possibilities of self-watering containers and began testing dozens of vegetables in various containers, experimenting with nutrients, soil mixtures, plant varieties, and container positioning. Now Smith is here to tell gardeners that anyone can grow and enjoy wonderful organic vegetables, using pots with continuous- flow watering systems.
Smith shares advice on choosing appropriate containers, how to provide balanced nutrition using his secret soil formula, and what additional tools benefit the container gardener. The reader will also find advice on starting from seed versus buying plants, which vegetables thrive in containers and which might be a bit more challenging, along with space-saving tips on pairing plants in single containers. After the last green tomato has been picked and is ripening on the windowsill, Smith wraps everything up with a chapter on fall clean-up and preparing for next spring. Now there’s really no excuse for store-bought tomatoes!
Customer Reviews:
Very Average.......2007-07-19
This book starts out good and states that it's going to tell you how to make your own self-watering containers. However, once you get through all the initial fluff, I found the details necessary to actually follow through on the author's suggestions to be extremely limited. The author discusses how to make any pot self-watering, but uses a ready made insert. Then he does not say where to get the ready made insert from. Parts of the book read more like a pat on the back to his own successes with pictures from his own garden. That's great, but I bought the book to learn how to set up my own self-watering system which I still am at a loss after reading the book. I was very disappointed.
This should be a best seller!!!.......2007-05-15
I have read a lot of gardening books, but this is one of the all time best!! It is full of facts, as opposed to general descriptions. "A full grown tomato takes a gallon of water a day." as opposed to some vague keep it well watered that you get in so many books.
It is precise, without being dry. Written with a sense of humor, as well as common sense. I found a lot of very useful information, even though I am a seasoned gardener, and a novice would find this invaluable. The information I found was accurate, and as importantly, explained. I love to know the "why" behind something.
I must also comment on the pictures. They are good pictures of exactly the plant being talked about. You could easily identify an unknown plant from the pictures and descriptions. That is rare...most books show plants from too far away, or in a grouping...neither of which is helpful to me.
All and all, this is my favorite gardening book of all time!! If I had to list a fault, I would be hard pressed to come up with one. Perhaps a bit more on the section on making a self watering pot at home. The basics are all there, but I would have like a bit more on the bigger containers, like how to turn a whiskey barrel into a self-waterer. And to go along with that, a few resourses on parts (as opposed to finished units.)
I'm ready to try doorstep gardening.......2007-03-21
I'm a serious organic gardener, with 4500 square feet of flowers, herbs and veggies. I have a good garden library and I'm glad to add this book. As far as I know, it is the only container gardening book that addresses organic vegetable growing. I used to think that tilling the earth was superior to container gardening. In recent years, however, time pressures have made me wonder about the viability of growing convenience items (lettuce, tomatoes, onions) close to my front and back doors in containers so that dinner would be easy to harvest. Having read this book, I'm ready to try it. A very quick and lively read, the book's only shortcoming is lack of adequate information on how to create your own self-watering pots.
Self-Watering Container Gardening for Dummies!.......2007-01-24
This book provides a thorough and thoughtful explanation of vegetable gardening in self-watering containers. While Mr. Smith seems to make a point of not endorsing specific brands in his books I would have found that useful. I did manage to google the adjustable reservoir insert Mr. Smith describes in "making a self-watering container" on page 28 and discovered it, or one just like it, is available from the Gardener's Supply Company for $14.95. It would be a relatively simple propositon to make your own from pvc pipe and sheet plastic.
Not as good as Vegetable Gardener's Bible or Bountiful Container.......2006-10-15
I learned a great deal from Edward Smith's other book, The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, and I use it as a reference on germination and growing soil temperatures. So I did not hesitate to order his Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers when I decided to buy some books on container gardening. I ordered this book and McGee and Stuckey's Bountiful Container. Bountiful Container is comprehensive, thoughtful and very helpful. However, this book reads like an ad for self-watering containers, which were apparently provided free to the author with the hope that he might endorse them. Unlike the author's first book, this lavishly illustrated book is short on information, more suitable for a coffee table than a container gardener. If there were a money-back guarantee, I would request it.

Book Description
This superb collection of lithographs reveals the great Impressionist’s subtle mastery of mood, composition and shading even without the presence of the rich palette of colors usually associated with his work. Scenes of children playing, mothers with children, women posing and working, and portraits of the artist’s children are interspersed with portraits of famous men, among them Paul Cézanne, Auguste Rodin, Richard Wagner and Ambroise Vollard.
