Use of a brain not required.......2006-08-04
I work at a library and am up for trying anything. I saw Batteries Required on a cart and it looked interesting, that is until I started reading it. The dialogue is horrible. Very basic, amature writing. The heroine leaves much to be desired. While Apodaca tries to make her funny, she ends up turning her into a stupid, helpless idiot who can't do anything right. There are many twists and turns, but after about the 5th one, I rolled my eyes and put the book down instead of eagerly reading on. The twists, like dead bodies not being there, cars blowing up and such, were more annoying than anything. The story was not adequately developed and the characters were very shallow. It seemed to me to be comprable to a bad Harlequin mystery than a cute Janet Evanovish read-a-like. If you don't want your brain stimulated and have no problem reading boring dialogue with idiot women as the characters, then you'll love it. Otherwise, go try Janet Evanovich or Lauren Willig.
Batteries NOT Required... reading that is.......2006-07-05
I'm sorry to say that I just don't get it. This author consistently gets four and five star reviews, and I thought I would really enjoy her stuff based on the reviews I'd read. This is the second Sam Shaw book I've tried (along with the first one in the series), and unless I get really desperate, I won't be back. I find the dialogue to be terribly stilted, the plots seem contrived, and the whole thing is clearly a (very poor) Janet Evanovich knock-off. I wish I saw what everyone else does, because apparently lots of folks find her an absolute hoot, and I love funny books. But these are not funny, they're just... weak. It's rare that I can't finish a book, but I could not bring myself to keep turning the pages in this one.
Sex Toys, Murder, and A Stalker.......2006-02-23
Samantha and her best friend Angel get given a box of sex toys at a local casino. Angel sells lingerie and receives the sex toys to consider selling. She asks Samantha to hold the box for her and then goes missing.
Samantha gets Detective Vance to look into her disappearance. But things aren't what they seem, and soon Detective Vance is quit put out with Samantha. Samantha's boyfriend and ex-cop turned PI, Gabe, helps her investigate.
Samantha owns and runs Heart Mates, a dating service. While investigating, she is also fending off a stalking fan trying to find romance writer R. V. Logan. Samantha has promised to not tell anyone that Detective Vance writes those romances, but can she keep that promise and solve the mystery, saving Angel at the same time?
I love this series. The characters are so well written. The story moves along at a great pace. Samantha gets herself in her share of sticky situations. She has to juggle family, work, and investigating. She is such a fun character.
Then there's Gabe and Detective Vance. They really keep the story hopping. They're both after Samantha and also kept busy keeping her safe.
I highly recommend this book.
This author just keeps getting better and better...........2005-05-14
I love this series and the author gets better with each book. Gabe is HOT and is right up there and starting to edge past Janet Evanovich's Ranger and not quite but starting to trip on the heels of JD Robb's Roarke. (All in my opinion). I love Grandpa and Ali the beer drinking ex-police dog. This is a great series and if you want to have a guaranteed fun time - Jennifer Apodaca's Samantha Shaw's series is the thing to pick up - but make sure no one is around to interrupt you while you're reading!
On the Edge Fun.......2005-05-12
This is the fourth in the Samantha Shaw series and I can't wait to find out what happens next. Sam and Angel really keep you on edge in this installment. And then there is Gabe you can feel the heat through the page between Sam and him......what is better than a little romance and alot of mystery. As always Grandpa, the boys and Ali are there with a helping hand and in Grandpa's case quick internet access (wonder if he has cable or dsl?). If you like a quick fun mystery you will love this series.

Sacred Stubbed Toe.......2006-03-06
This is the second book in C. Dale Brittain's Daimbert series. These are stories about a young wizard out on his first job - royal wizard of the tiny kingdom of Yurt. Daimbert has recovered from his first adventure, banishing a demon that was haunting the castle and temporarily dying in the process. Joachim the royal priest, who has now become an unlikely friend, rescued him. In the very medieval world of these tales wizards and churchmen generally don't mix, but age and education have drawn them together.
When King Haimeric decides to take a vacation, he leaves his nephew in charge, with Daimbert to aid him. Now Joachim is called on to help resolve the problem of the Sacred Toe, a saint's relic that the spirit of the saint, ever cranky, seems to want moved elsewhere. At the same time Daimbert is called on to investigate a sudden plague of horned and fanged rabbits. The two join together to investigate their problems, and thereby hangs a tale.
Daimbert's quest becomes complicated when he discovers that the rabbits are magical constructs and there is even something worse haunting the woods. Other distractions come in the form of a novice wizard whom the duchess has added to her staff and an extremely attractive wood nymph with an affection for wizards. Joachim's problems are almost as bad. The saint is indeed cranky, the current hermit is confused, and strangers are setting up a souvenir stand at the site of the Holy Toe. Now priests from a church in the city are on their way to claim the Toe, and, in case I forgot to mention it, priests and wood nymphs do not generally get along.
This is a complex story with interwoven layers of deception. While the tone is light, there is no question but that some of the issues addressed are serious. Everything from an old wizard's fear of dying to a noble's mid-life crisis shows that Brittain has a knack for character development and a willingness to avoid the usual themes of grand heroes and damsels in distress. This series is unique in its mix of stylings, and worth looking up.
As good as the "Bad Spell".......2002-06-23
C. Dale Brittain is one of the more underrated fantasy writers, who manages to blend straight fantasy with a sense of comedy and wryness. The first book in the Daimbert series, "Bad Spell in Yurt," introduced readers to the inexperienced wizard Daimbert; this book picks up where the last left off.
King Haimeric of Yurt is going away for a while, leaving his blunt nephew Dominic and royal wizard Daimbert in charge of the kingdom in his absence. But Daimbert soon finds that things in Yurt aren't as peaceful as they appear: Enormous savage horned rabbits are running loose. Saint Eusebius the Cranky, at the Shrine of the Holy Toe, has been appearing in dreams to different priests and hermits, with conflicting wishes. The wood nymph who lives near the shrine has to be moved, except she doesn't want to be. The strong-willed Duchess Diana has apparently fallen in love with her new huntsman, Nimrod -- and Dominic wants to marry her instead. And a twitty but well-meaning young wizard named Evrard is tagging along with Daimbert.
But solving each problem produces a new one. No sooner has Daimbert unraveled the mystery of the giant horned rabbits than he finds that a new one has cropped up. A mysterious zombielike monster is creeping around the countryside near the Shrine of the Holy Toe, and it's proving to be a much bigger problem than the horned rabbits ever were...
This book is as enthralling a mystery/fantasy as the previous one was, without repeating any plot elements. Brittain continues the good-natured jokes and occasional bursts of silly humor, such as the hunter called Nimrod or the horned rabbits. The whole idea of the Cranky Saint, the Shrine of the Sacred Toe, and his comical encounter with the dragon and subsequent sainthood was absolutely hilarious; Christians with a sense of humor may appreciate it. As for the plotting, it has actually improved: this book is more complicated and twisted, with a slightly tighter feel to it.
Characters return from the first book in the series, like the old wizard who served the king before Daimbert, and Joachim the saintly-but-not-annoying chaplain. There are some new ones, such as Evrard, a character who might be annoying if he weren't so earnest. The only character who fails to come alive is the wood nymph, who feels somewhat disconnected from the other plots. She did inspire some interesting theological discussions, of which there are more in this book than in "Bad Spell."
A delightful sequel in an all-too-short series. Read "Bad Spell," read "Wood Nymph," and then on to the next book...
Be Careful What You Wish For..........2000-09-23
...You just might get it! Daimbert soon found this out. When the King of Yurt decided it was time for his family to go on vacation, he left Daimbert and Joachim, the chaplain, in charge, with his nephew on the throne as regent. As soon as the King left, problems started popping up left and right! One of the dukes is plagued with magical rabbits... with horns; the very cranky saint that resides at the shrine of the Holy Toe has appeared in several different visions, some stated his wishes to be moved from the shrine to a church in a different city, and others saying that he wants to stay at the shrine; the church decided they wanted the nymph that resides in the woods around the shrine of the Holy Toe to be moved elsewhere; a duchess is being courted by an apparently low-born stranger *and* the King's nephew; odd zombie-like creatures have been sighted; and to top it all off, Daimbert's predecessor seems to be growing more and more incompetent. While all these problems are very serious indeed, Brittain still manages to keep it light-hearted and fun. Also, he does a wonderful job of addressing how magic and religion interact.
A well done sequel, definately worth reading.......1998-12-03
Brittain brings back all of the original characters in a worthy sequel to "Bad Spell in Yurt". While the sequel a lot of fun to read, I thought it had a sharper edge to it's tone then the first book in the series. I'd recommend this book to any fantasy reader-- if you've read the first book in the series then this is a definate "must read".
Kept me up several nights, few books have done that to me........1998-09-23
The wizard sure has his hands full. There was a good mix of fantasy and real life conflicts between church and everyone else. There were very few far fetched ideas which made the reading enjoyable. It is worth the reading if you like fantacy. If your too hung up on the real world, by a dictionary.

The development of strategies for recovery from incest and other abuse, particularly for men, has been a major focus of his work as a counselor and group leader.
Thoroughly updated and revised, and including an expanded Resources section, Victims No Longer educates survivors and professionals about the recovery process -- speaking to the pain, needs, fears, and hopes of the adult male survivor.
Customer Reviews:
Victims No Longer.......2007-09-29
This is an excellent, straight-forward, sensitive book that deals with a topic that is difficult. It is written so that it can be easily understood and is incredibly helpful to victims as well as therapists who treat them. The author validates the victim's world and encourages the victim to get help and talks about the many males who have survived and are healing.
Long-But has good info/advice.......2007-08-25
As a spouse of a survivor, I read this book which also offered advice to partners and spouses. This book gave way too many examples and other info for the first 4 chapters. Most of us already have an idea of what sexual abuse against boys can entail, there were just way too many stories of survivors that were disturbing and difficult to read. It did however give important insight and ways to get help and help yourself but it came along with a lot of unneeded information. If you have the time and patience it is a good tool towards recovery.
Awesome read.......2007-08-24
I gave this wonderful book to my husband who is in recovery from childhood sexual abuse by his father. He cried and read , cried and read from start to finish. The book is empowering, healing and filled with truth that heals. I recommend it as an essential read for those in recovery and for those who love them. Kate
Victims No Longer.......2007-01-23
This is an excellent book. I am a counselor and the issues addressed regarding male child sexual abuse are so important. So many males have been molested and/or incested and carry shame, so that they, perhaps more than females, do not report it. Yet, these unresolved issues carry into adult sexual and friendship relationships until they are healed. I bought a copy for myself to use clinically and one for a friend who is a survivor of incest.
Absolutely Recommended.......2006-03-11
This book is a great resource for clinicians, survivors, and anyone who knows a survivor.

potatoes for dinner!.......2004-02-10
I bought this book because I owned others in this series (ultimate shrimp, ultimate ice cream)--and I'm not disappointed. All the recipes are for main courses with potatoes, so this is a book for real potato lovers. Great soups, really yummy stews, and some cool new things I've never seen before--potato casseroles that are way great. I love all the international dishes, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, French, German, African. It's so cool to make potatoes from around the world.
spud-tastic.......2003-07-08
Here's a great set of recipes for every spud-lover in your life. Every recipe is a main course--some fudge a little, like "steak frites," but the authors claim it's not steak frites without the frites. Fair enough. But beyond those, there are a terrific set of international dishes, from Congolese to Japanese, from Chinese to Chilean. Who knew the spud was such an international favorite? And there are plenty of home-spun, American recipes, too. From latkes to hash, here's a book that will make the potato the centerpiece of any plate.

Barron's Pet Handbooks are extra-large versions of the well-known Pet Owner's Manual series, with more detailed information, more photos, and more advice.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST YORKIE GUIDE EVER PERIOD.......2007-05-01
This book is so specific to Yorkie needs! Not your general run of the mill yorkie book. Teaches yorkie pressure points to control bleeding, the dilemma between using a water bottle dripper to a water bowl. WOW; i am amazed at this detail. Also teaches you how to make their ears stand up. 5 STARS!
Barron's other success........2004-07-16
The Yorkshire Terrier Handbook is another magnificent entry in a very time deserving series. A very professional manual to dog: maintainence, feeding, behavioral issues, and several other categories. Since my grandparents own a male Yorkshire Terrier, this would be a recommendation for his training, health, and overall lifestyle. The series would serve any first time pet owner quite well. The binding quality is also complimentary, published in very firm paperback. No other pet guides have this type of high quality. Barron's is most certainly worthy of an acknowledgement for the well made pet handbooks.
It's a very useful book........2004-04-15
This book is very very useful. Not only it has lots of cute yorkie pics, but it contains lots of information about yorkshire terrier.

Customer Reviews:
365 days - a constructed concept.......2006-01-09
First of all, the title is very misleading. The ambition of this book is NOT to show the most beautiful gardens around the world and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the days of the year. It's easy to see that it's all a trick to market the book. The photographer has amassed a lot of photos over 20 years and hey - why not publish them? But what can possibly make the collection look a little less haphazard, the're from all over the place? Let's call them "gardens around the world", although the majority is from the U.S and Europe is only represented by G.B, France and Spain... And the gardens are NOT shot at the date they are given in the book, there is not a garden for every date, there are howewer a PHOTO for every day. The date-concept doesn't add anything to the experience of reading this book.
The good thing is that at a bargain price you get hours of garden exploring in your armchair. And for a European it's interesting to see some great formal American gardens that actually put there European predecessors almost in the shade. That would have been a good book, the American contribution alone.
The Visual Poetry of the Garden.......2005-07-06
Photographer/naturalist/writer Mick Hales has created a book that visualizes not only the beauty but the imperative importance of gardens. He traveled throughout North America, Asia and Europe and not only found gardens of extraordinary beauty, but found those lovingly patient vistas from which we, the viewer, can be brought into an understanding and appreciation of the message of each garden. The photography is stunning, like paintings recreated by an artist's eye, but here the subject is captured without recreation: Hales' lens captures what is really there.
Hales speaks to each photograph, each garden view, enhancing what we otherwise might miss from the one vantage given us. He has arranged the 365 gardens both alphabetically as to place and further defined the photographs by months of the year. Here are gardens from winter to fall: the flow is as magical as the qualities of nature.
In his short but sensitive introduction to his portfolio he states: "As our society moves faster and faster, with technological advances each year, it is hard for us to keep our connection to the land. Keeping a garden is on answer to this loss - having one's hands in and smelling the soil. Watching plants grow, flower, and die back reminds us of our own humanity and the lives we have been given." And that sums it all! This is a MUST for gardeners, for naturalists, for dreamers. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05
A beautiful garden for every day of the year.......2005-01-01
This is a lovely and unique book that features over 150 gardens throughout the world. Each double page spread corresponds with every day of the year (like a calendar), with a brief description of the garden on the left page and a photograph on the right page. Some gardens are featured on more than one page. Many of the gardens are world famous while others are more obscure. The size of the book is unique (7" high, 10" wide and 2 1/2" thick) and looks almost like a beautiful decorative box.
The World's Gardens On Your Coffee Table.......2004-06-12
What an excellent publication! This compilation of exquisite garden photos is a must have for any home owner or gardening enthusiast. Gardens Around the World: 365 Days is worth every penny of its full retail price, Amazon's deeply discounted price makes it a steal. Don't pass this one by! Your guests will quickly grab hold of this well bound book to see which gardens are featured on thier birthday, anniversaries, etc.

Customer Reviews:
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!.......2001-04-01
This is THE LAST Dummies book that I will EVER purchase. Whaddya mean, Internet Edition??? What about desktop publishing, PageMaker's forte??
Lousy title, lousy book, lousy marketing scheme. IDG Books - you should be ashamed of yourselves. If there was a rating less than 1 star, this book would be most deserving of it.
Another Dummy Hooked by Misleading Title.......2000-11-25
Yes, I did the same thing as other reviewers, buying it automatically because I wanted a book that gave a better quick start than the Pagemaker documents and because I expected the "Dummies" series to do that. Then I found that ignoring the fine print on the cover was a dumb thing to do. What do they mean, Internet Edition? There is no other edition!
I wonder how many people buy Pagemaker to create publications for the web, since it is not even a very good tool for that? I will exercise more caution with "Dummies" books in the future and will buy, if I have the option, the fairly new competing books.
Pagemaker 6.5 for Dummies (internet edition).......2000-05-08
Disappointed. When I arrived home and read the small print in the title I learned it's an internet edition. I am in a Pagemaker class and need clearer and less convoluted directions than those in the text we use. I've wanted to buy the DUMMIES book for Pagemaker 6.5 since I use other of their books and know they are all very user friendly. This should be titled INTERNET BOOK using Pagemaker. I'm sure it's fine for a web builder but I could find nothing here that would serve my purpose. It will return to the bookstore. C. Lewis
Where are the Desktop Publishing Instructions?.......2000-02-02
This must be the book I bought and returned because, although its title suggested otherwise, it dealt exclusively with the internet. I like "Dummies" books and wanted one on PageMaker desktop publishing, not on webpages. I understand from reading another customer's comments that there is not one on straight desktop publishing. I wish the authors had been more straightforward about what their book contained...it would have saved me a lot of time and trips to the bookstore. Guess I will have to look elsewhere for my Pagemaker instructions.
Great Web Page Development Source but NO DESKTOP PUB!!.......1998-08-05
Excellent and easy to understand and read (like all the Dummies books (LOL)). So, hey IDG, "WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE THE PAGEMAKER 6.5 FOR WINDOWS FOR DUMMIES (NON-INTERNET VERSION)? Although I am glad I bought the internet version, I bought it crossing my fingers that it would contain Desktop Publishing (the main purpose of PageMaker 6.5). My supplier said there is not a "regular" version available for 6.5 yet!!!

Book Description
Like many boys, Luis Gabriel Aguilera grew up with cartoons, music, friends, and first loves. As he entered his teenage years, he faced the typical questions of adolescence—what kind of person did he want to be? how should he live his life? But for Aguilera, now in his twenties, these questions had a particular urgency. A Mexican immigrant, he came of age in a Polish neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago that was encroached upon by threats of gangs and drugs. He attended Catholic school and, at age thirteen, began an affair with one of the teachers at the local elementary school. All the while he documented his teenage years in a series of journals, which have now grown into Gabriel's Fire.
Aguilera's memoir is not just an account of race relations and street life in the inner city, nor of the plight of the immigrant and the dilemma of class identity for a "minority" family. Gabriel's Fire also movingly recounts the peculiarly daunting and inspiring moments of a particular age, riddled with confusion, desires, and duties and recorded by an exceptionally observant and articulate young man. Aguilera writes that he "grew into" the English language when he was eleven or twelve, and his recollections reflect his newfound delight with words—the conversations, arguments, taunts, song lyrics, and casual interchanges of his youth are rendered here with an immediacy and directness rare in contemporary memoirs.
Both a picture of American culture of the 1980s and 1990s and a coming-of-age story, Gabriel's Fire counters mainstream and mass-mediated images of the inner city, Hispanic culture, and troubled youth. In its honesty and energy, it is a poignant and compelling story of one man's formative years.

Eloquent, Imaginative, Conscious, and Grounded.......2007-04-20
The fact that this book was chosen by the University of Chicago Press is no small feat. The other reviewers must be seeking action, resolution, or Hollywood storytelling. This is not the point. This book is a clairvoyant entry into a very special voice that became witness and part of the surroundings and established a deep, confident, thoughtful, methodical, positive, and productive psyche through the chaos that unfolded (sometimes via the protagonist's own doing, mind you!).
Memoir? Please!.......2006-09-23
I knew the author and his family. I attended S.S. Peter & Paul too and if memory serves me right, I think his mother IS still alive. I thought memoirs were supposed to be true? Guess this author didn't get that memo. Not everything is fiction though. He did have an affair with his teacher that everyone knew about but shame on the author for lying about "Father Tom"!! He knows damn well that &$%!# did happen. What a disappointment!
gabriel's fire.......2006-04-29
I read this book because I've been studying Latino youth and gangs in Chicago. I kept waiting for "something" to happen in this book. The author doesn't really have enough interesting things to say for a memoir, and it seems kind of like he just wants to hear himself talk.
If anyone has any other suggestions about quality books on Latino youth and gang culture (particularly in Chicago/NYC) let me know: jlockey79@yahoo.com
Great Book.......2003-11-18
I really enjoyed this book. As someone who grew up in Chicago around the same time, it's a realistic portrayal of life on the South Side. Some may complain about all of the profanity used. I say, hide in a corner and listen to teens talk. As a matter of fact, don't hide, they'll probably swear anyway.
The alcohol abuse, violence and love of music is a very real aspect of many people's lives. Even the affair with the teacher is well-done and not sensationalized.
This is a must read for anyone interested in what life is or was like for some young people in our American cities.
Interesting Story, poorly conveyed.......2001-09-25
I bought this book because I enjoy reading life stories, especially if it is about mexican/latino life. I just could not get into this book, so I didn't bother to finish it. The story just didn't seem to tie together or flow. I think the premise was a good start but it should be rewritten.
