I have yet to read a Barbara Burnett Smith book that I haven't totally enjoyed. The beading element just added to the book as I am a beader too.
A great beginning leads to a sad end.......2006-11-16
As a mystery lover AND a new beader, I was overjoyed to find a mystery featuring beading. The fact that the story is set in Texas and the main character was reminiscent of Anne Richards, our former govenor, is icing on the cake. After reading this mystery, I was more than ready to read more of Kitzi Camden's adventures. Unfortunately, a quick google of the author lead to the discovery that she died of cancer not long after this book was orginally published. Having lost members of my own family to cancer, I grieve for Babarba Burnett Smith's family. I hope some other writer will be able to create a series of beading mysteries with as lively a lead character.
Bead on Trouble is a Gem!!!!!.......2006-11-05
The book started out slow, but it soon took off and never stopped!! I ended up loving it! It was a great read, good mystery and even better if you are a beader! It had lots of twists and turns, and very interesting characters!!! I finished wanting a second Kitzi mystery to get into immediately. I hope I don't have to wait long for a second in the series!! Keep them coming, PLEASE Barbara!!!!!!!!
Terrific crafting mystery set in Tx........2005-02-15
This is the first book in a new series by Barbara Burnett Smith. This is the first book I have read by her.
Kitzi Camden is terrific. She and her best friend Beth Fairfield are off to Camp Green Clover for the Craft Retreat. They went to this camp together when they were children. Now their friend owns it and runs the Craft Retreats twice yearly. Both Kitzi and Beth are into beads. This year they are bringing Shannon, Beth's daughter, along.
The first night of camp Shannon insists to Kitzi that she just saw he father car at the camp. She wants to follow him. Kitzi will not let her take her car, so she drives Shannon. They end up at a hardware store where Shannon says she recently saw her father. After searching the store and parking lot, they decide to head back to camp. But, Shannon sees another parking lot in back. When they investigate they find his car and him in it making out with camp crafter May Feather. Agreeing to not say anything to Beth, they return to camp.
The next day the find out that May was murdered. Shannon and Kitzi lie to the police about their whereabouts the night before. One officer doesn't believe them. Kitzi begins to look into things on her own. She is determined to find out who the real murderer is and gets into many sticky situations along the way.
I can't wait for another Kitzi Camden book. This was terrific. I loved the all characters and the setting - the camp is located in Texas. Ms. Smith has a real winner. Kitzi is so likeable and funny.
There are plenty of suspects for Kitzi to investigate that you will have trouble figuring it out before she does. I highly recommend this book!
fun and light read.......2005-02-08
certainly not the most riveting "who done it", but if you are a beader you will enjoy the setting. Perfect for early morning light commuter reading. I enjoyed it, although it promises a bead pattern and that for me was a disappointment when I saw what it was for. I'd certainly say give it a read if you are interested in beading and the beading community.

I was disappointed in this book, hoping for something to help my wife who is on Prozac for waking her brain up as she is recovering from a major hemmorhaggic stroke. This book is good for people who don't realize how profoundly their diet effects all aspects of their health. But there are no "secrets" revealed, and no magic relief for my wife.

The scientific explanations are crystal clear, the advice thoughtful and lucid, and the writing exemplary. This is an excellent book about the mysterious chemistry of the brain and how naturally to enhance your levels of serotonin.

A lifesaver for me!.......1999-03-21
I had suffered from depression for more than 25 years, off and on, and finally I was put on anti-depressants. I hated the side effects and eventually had to quit the meds. I came across this book, just a small mass produced paperback book and the information, although simple has changed my life. I no longer have mood swings, dark brooding periods or headaches. The author takes a lot of time to explain the physiology behind it all. If the science is too much for the reader than he/she can just get to the nitty gritty of it all. The method she proposes is simple for anyone to follow. My husband was very skeptical about a book changing one's life but I had no choice but to give a chance. I'm forever grateful to the author for writing this book. My family has a wife and mother now who isn't a Jekyll and Hyde show.

EXCELLENT BOOK BY A MASTER.......2007-10-08
This is indeed an excellent book, written by Michel Roux who along with his brother contributed to revolutionise French Patisserie(His baked Lemon Tart is now a classic).
The book has a multitude of recipes and information laced with beautiful photographs for most products and some procedures. There is a short but great section on chocolate decorations (probably the best before Wybauw's book Chocolate Decorations came out).
The desserts are decorated in the modern fashion and look very professional but can be achieved by experienced pastry chefs and careful home cooks (with some experience) alike.
This book is in fact geared towards the profesional but there is no other book that I would recommend more highly for the home cook who wants to try his/her hand in quality pastry. And quality is what it is all about:

All the recipes are of the highest standards, using the best methods and bringing forth excellent results consistently. There is great diversity, from plated desserts to desserts that one can sell in a pastry shop to tea-time snacks petit-fours and liquer preserved fruits. Most of the basics of French Patiserie are here along with many innovative products.
The book uses metric measurements like all professional pastry books.
I have the hardcover version but they are the same.
Essential for all who want to know about pastry or expand their already acquired knowledge. And at this price it's a bargain, professional books usually cost an arm and a leg.
Not a book for the faint hearted.......2007-06-02
An amazing book with step by step instructions to great desserts. Though some of them may look complex its actually quite simple and easy. Lots of tips and hints, read the recipe twice over before starting. Great book for the home and resteraunts.
Yet another masterpiece from the Master.......2007-01-09
This is my third book written by Michel Roux. The others are "Eggs" and "Sauce".
Michel Roux is, through the power of his three Michlin stars, one of the best chefs in the world. However, being a great chef doesn't necesserily make you a great writer. This is most certainly NOT the case with mr. Roux - he is a brilliant writer and has written an incredible book.
The level of skill required and attention to detail in this cookbook is like no other I have ever seen in a cookbook before. Yet the author manages to guide me through it without the slightest confusion or panic.
I do however not recommend this book for beginners, I think the recipes and skills required to pull them off would be too overwhelming.
If you are a professional chef it is a great reference to have and if you are - like me - a seasoned amateur, making these desserts will make you the King of your food- and wineclub ;-)
Inspiring and Inventive!.......2006-11-17
Calling myself as a fusion pastry chef in the contemporary world of baking, this book is very inspiring. It lets your creative juices flow freely and excites your thoughts with awe. I look at my pastries in a very different perspective treating it like how chefs handle their dishes. It is through this marriage of unusual flavors, which can be risky at times, that makes this book a must for contemporary chefs like me. There are many chefs who attempt to make a difference but they go overboard in their creativity losing the essence of making a simple yet tactile-provoking dessert. Simplicity + Creativity should yield a delicious dessert with a twist.

This book is as useful for a home baker as for professionals. I keep coming to it for reference almost every day. It is loaded with basic recipes as well as techniques (chocolate and sugar among others), pictures and recipes for unique desserts. Highly recommended!

Love this book - title should be changed however!!.......2006-11-13
There are two things wrong with this fine book: it's hardcover and thus, may come across as merely a 'coffee table book' with less text value. Not true! Secondly, the title perhaps suggests a book that is all 'sing song' and full of mushy cat ramblings. Completely false! 'Cats Have No Masters...Just Friends' should be titled something like, 'How to Have an AWESOME Relationship with your Cat.' There is no possible way that one could read this book and not substantially (if not radically) improve life with a cat. So much is covered in this book that is truly original - from Ms. Anderson's section on the (often overlooked) differences between cats and dogs, to dispelling cat myths, to the very detailed, practical, fun chapters on exactly how to treat your cat to bring out the best in feline-human friendship, this well-written book is an absolute MUST HAVE for any person with a cat. First time cat owners should read this book before getting a cat. Long time cat owners will smile and learn from the wisdom and humor on these pages. By the way, there are wonderful color photographs on each page, perfectly illustrating the lively text. This book is a gem. Treat yourself, treat a friend, don't miss this one!!

I picked this book up at the bookstore to read while I waited for my husband. If you have ever had a "cat friend" this is excellent. Karen Anderson catches the true thoughts and feelings of cats and their human friends. I will now buy this book to keep in my library to enjoy again and again. It is a book for those who truly love and know "the cat".

This book is extremely comprehensive. Every magazine you could ever want to know about is listed in here. I highly recommend it. There are also great inserts on collectable posters and bands like Kiss, The Doors, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Annette Funicello, Buddy Holly, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, The Buckinghams, and Rod Stewert. I am very pleased with my choice of many horticultural books that are on the market. It has all of the information that I was looking for and more. Yes, it is pretty hard to haul around the garden, but worth it!

I had been admiring this book at my local library for quite a while and was surprised to see it offered through Amazon at a great price. This book has wonderful photos of each plant (and species) as well as detailed information, which makes identifying plants so much easier than with any other gardening book out there. If there is one draw back, it would have to be the weight. With over 1100 pages, it is not a book to carry around the garden.
Great housewarming gift!.......2007-03-24
This book works best if paired with The American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers. Each book stands on it's own but the two together give total information and abundant photos. I bought one set for new homeowners about to plan their first yard and bought another set for myself. Even after gardening for many years, these books provide answers to questions that come up every gardening season.
The books are substantial in weight as well as information.
