Falco takes a Holiday.......2006-10-04

This is the twelfth novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth in Rome at the time of Vespasian. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in the Roman world of circa AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.

Falco has like many people been experiencing problems with builders in what was to be his new Janiculum home. Glaucus and Cotta (remember them) were supposed to be renovating the bath house. It would seem that Glaucus and Cotta have left some rubbish behind when they left the renovation and it is down to Falco why they left it there.

While on the subject of building and renovations the Emperor Vespasian has more than a few problems with a building project he is financing for the Togidubnus, Chieftain of the Atrebates in that god forsaken place called Britannia. As Falco has served his time in Britannia he seems the logical person to send and sort out the mess. Helena is keen to turn the expedition into a family holiday, so Falco, Helena and the two young children, plus one or two hangers on arrive at the half built palace in Noviomagus.

Falco soon starts to rub the builders up the wrong way by asking too many questions. Bodies start to appear and the family are soon put in danger. Falco begins to realise why he hated this cold, wet and windy island so much.

Brilliant as Usual.......2005-08-04

Lindsey Davis has created a great series about an informer in ancient Rome. The informer, Marcus Didius Falco, is the modern equivalent of a private detective. In this novel he is commissioned by the Emperor Vespasian to settle problems on a building site in Britain. He refuses the commission until he finds the body of a labourer under the floor of his own bath house and discovers the builders who put him there have absconded to Britain, probably to the very same palace that the Emperor is concerned about. Davis has chosen the site of the palace that was discovered in Fishbourne near Chichester in 1960. The costs are too high for the civic purse and Falco discovers a phantom team of labourers and a crooked architect's stash of stolen building materials when he arrives with his family at the distant province. Davis' style of writing makes this a most enjoyable series to read.

The Falco series.......2004-01-25

Can't understand why half the editorial reviews and some of the reader's reviews are for another book altogether. But this Lindsey Davis book is from the Falco series and is fun like all the others. I frequently buy my Davis books from amazon.co.uk since they come out there about a year before in the US. There is a new one Scandal Takes a Holiday coming out in June 2004. They also spell the name Lindsay Davis which I think is the correct spelling.

About Lindsey Davis' Book.......2003-11-01

I like this book almost as well as any of the other Falco novels, even though it needs to be a bit longer. Up until now, amazon.com seems to have joined this book with the reviews for a different book altogether; until the situation is caught, let me assure you that this is indeed a book about the further adventures of the much-loved ancient Roman detective. Helena, both of her brothers, Petronius Longus, and another good character that we haven't seen since _Shadows in Bronze_ make this a good outing for Falco, who is in sent to his absolute least favorite place in the world. It's a winner in a series of winners. What book the other reviews (as of 10/31/03) are talking about I do not know.

An Ending..........2005-03-24

Blitz Tactics has never been a serious series. Pretty much all it focuses on is fanservice (plenty of panty shots) and action (be it martial arts or gunplay). That being said, this final volume of Najica:Blitz Tactics is no different.

The art is crisp, but the story is convoluted and lacking. There's a bit of a climax, a bit of resolution, but it's all so predictable. Blah.

HSPs, as they are known, make up the estimated 15 to 20 percent of the population that have very sensitive nervous system and are prone to deep reflection and feelings of being overwhelmed by the world. These special characteristics, which tend to be misunderstood as shyness and dismissed as signs of weakness in our highly competitive society, inevitably bring interesting challenges to all kinds of love relationships for HSPs. Author Elaine Aron--who's a psychotherapist, researcher, and an HSP--delves deep to into the subject and surfaces with detailed, helpful, wise advice for HSPs and their partners, be they fellow HSPs or non-HSPs.

Aron details the positive and negative sides to such relationships, including how the HSP benefits, how both members of the relationship benefit, the typical challenges that arise, and solutions to those challenges. For instance, a relationship made up of two HSPs may engender low levels of arousal, or awareness, which means that both of you will avoid doing the same things that make you uncomfortable, such as shopping, dealing with conflict, and being in crowds. Solution? Simplify your life, see if you can hire someone to take care of the tasks neither of you wants to do--but don't forget that doing such tasks is also a way to grow personally--and divvy up the tasks according to preference. As for conflict, Aron says that having a plan of action is the best route--decide how to handle conflict in the relationship before the conflict flares up. Another reality of an HSP-HSP union is that neither person will be able to max out on work and expect to have a decent home life, so at least one of you will have to limit activities. So, plan not to have more than one child if you both work (it may be too late for some couples to put this one into action; if so, Aron advises that one parent stay at home).

Throughout the book, Aron stresses that being in a relationship is a "package deal"; neither the HSP nor the non-HSP is perfect, so she urges readers to appreciate the positive aspects of their sensitivity, be it highly sensitive or not, and not to dwell on its drawbacks. But she does urge HSPs who are unhappy with their trait to work on coming to terms with it--through inner work, counseling, or medication if needed--as its qualities, when properly appreciated, can be life enhancing and beneficial to HSPs as well as to their relationship partners. --Stefanie Durbin

The chemicals associated with what scientists call falling in love can really overwhelm the nervous system of an HSP. A particular nerve is activated in the state of attraction that can, even in non-HSPs, create a hypomania state. In the HSP this is like searing the brain with a toxic mixture of hyper-stimulants through the entire organ. A state that is wonderful for most can be the most ungrounding experience if not fraught with fear and dread. This is one book to guide an HSP into staying peaceful in the realm of love.

Aron Gets It.......2006-11-03

In reading Aron's books, I feel fully comprehended, which has been a rarity in this life. Her research let me know there are others like me, and I felt deeply heartened by the contents of this book. I love, too, that she writes from a place she knows from the inside out, and that she and her husband have collaborated over the years on research about this very important aspect of being human. I have purchased this book many times for friends.

Buy It. Save Yourself Some Work.......2004-08-16

If you are a highly sensitive person with a non-HSP partner this book is very helpful. First of all, HSPs are often capable of delivering incredibly long explanations of their behavior to select quarters. When called on to explain themselves to a partner, they can speak in epics.

If you are in this position, save yourself some time. Someone has already written the epic.

I have sensed and/or mentioned -most- of the relationship problems in this book. However, my observations and intuitions were spread out over the course of the entire relationship. I'm sure that many of my observations did not penetrate the mind of my partner as being significant. Thus, they weren't as useful as they should have been.

This book lays it out bluntly and clearly, for all to see.

This is extremely important for both partners. The book affirms what the HSP already intuited, and it gives the non-HSP a reference. Non-HSPs seem to feel much happier when they are given a reference. They do not dwell in an intuitive world of twenty thousand grays supplemented by prior reading. If you're having trouble in your relationship and you're highly sensitive, give yourself some relief, give your partner a much-deserved break. Get this, read it together. S/he will be relieved, and so will you. Buy it. Save yourself some work.

Sound Advice on Building Sensitive Relationships.......2002-10-05

The Highly Sensitive Person in Love is Dr. Elaine N. Aron's "sequel" to her best-selling book "The Highly Sensitive Person."

This second book builds on her previous research, this time taking on the topic of Relationships and along with it, possibly one of the most difficult issues facing Highly Sensitive People (HSPs): How to balance a strong need for "alone and quiet time" with the genuine desire to have an active and fulfilling intimate relationship. In addition to her research, Aron (an HSP) also draws on experiences from her own marriage to a non-HSP.

As a starting point, the book includes a "Sensitivity Self Test" for both the reader and their mate or potential partner. Aron then goes on to explain how HSPs differ from the rest of the world in the way they fall in love, think about love, and their needs within a relationship. There are separate chapters covering the pluses and minuses of different types of relationships: Two HSPs together, and an HSP paired with a non-HSP, as well as the differing needs of highly sensitive men and women. Finally, there are sections on "Building Sensitive Partnerships" and HSP Sexuality. Except for a few vague and indirect references, "The Highly Sensitive Person in Love" deals strictly with heterosexual relationships.

Whereas I enjoyed this book, and found much useful information within its pages, it didn't seem to offer quite the number of insights provided by "The Highly Sensitive Person." This perhaps goes to illustrate that whereas HSPs may have special needs, their relationship dynamics aren't AS different from anyone else's as one might think. Still, the book is well worth a read-- the sections on dating that "works" for an HSP, handling conflicts in a relationship, communication, and dividing "like" and "dislike" tasks in low-stress ways are highly recommended.

Aron's writing style gets a little dry and "clinical" from time to time, but the book is still quite readable. I think it stands alone quite well, but I would still highly recommend also reading Dr. Aron's original book.

Overall rating: Recommended (7.2 bookmarks out of a possible 10), not only for the Highly Sensitive Person, but also for a less sensitive person with a Highly Sensitive partner who thoroughly mystifies them!

I bought this book to celebrate and track the arrival of our chihuahua puppy. It is a cute little book with spaces for photos and sentimental things. The fill-in-the-blank format makes it a joy to fill out. I am giving 4 stars because I think that the book should be a little bigger for the price. All in all, a nice keepsake!

An excellent work by Mr Edward Emering who has written a detailed history of US Marine Corps medals. Many color photos who help the collector and also a great gift for Officers and enlisted men of the Navy and the Marine Corps! As a military medals' collector and Marine Corps Officer myself, I hope that others will follow Mr Emering's example and write books like this!A++++ for both its quality and detailed information!

A "Must Have" for Naval History Buffs and Medal Enthusiasts.......2001-08-29

I have really enjoyed, and highly recommend, this book. Many medal books focus on personal decorations, but this work, as the subtitle indicates, traces the development of United States Navy and Marine Corps campaign medals from their origin around 1900 through 1996. For each medal there is narrative describing it's creation, usually including a synopsis of the key events of the conflict, requirements to receive the medal, date the medal was issued, and one or more good-sized color photographs. There are also sections on quasi-official pre-1930 commemorative medals, Arctic and Antarctic service medals, attachment devices, unit citations and other ribbon-only awards, foreign campaign medals, and some information for estimating the age or authenticity of old medals.

The emphasis on pre-WWII campaign medals such as China Relief Expedition Medal (the Boxer Rebellion), Nicaraguan Campaign Medals (there are two!) and Yangtze Service Medal (think "Sand Pebbles") along with period photographs of sailors and marines wearing those medals is the most interesting part of the book. In many instances there are lists (but not specific service dates) of specific ships that were awarded certain medals, which adds to the appeal of this book as a source for historical studies.

I enjoy skimming this book frequently for historical tidbits and sharing it with people interested in U.S. Navy and American History. Buy it!
