Book Description
Violence suddenly takes the lead in the life of Neil Griffon. First his father, a stable owner, suffers a grisly accident, then Neil is brutally assaulted and abducted. The price for his freedom will mean the betrayal and deception of those who trust Griffon most. But he has no choice: A no-compromise crime czar has made an ultimatum--that his own eighteen-year old son be hired by Griffon's stables to ride the superstar horse, Archangel, in the Derby. And the young man must be trained to win. Or else....
"Few things are more convincing than Dick Francis at a full gallop."

Customer Reviews:
Thrilling..........2006-07-16
This is the first Dick Francis book I have read and it definitely won't be the last. I heartily enjoyed his writing style, flow from chapter to chapter, and enchanting descriptions of the horse racing world.
Neil comes home to take over the family business when his father shatters his leg and is hospitalized for months. He takes over a horse training facility that has been very successful over the years, but he runs into problems when a father will do anything for his son.
Alex has been raised in a world where whatever he wants, he gets. What he wants this time is to ride Archangel in the Derby, even though he isn't even a jockey.
Francis explores the crazy relationship between father and son. One gave everything but freedom, where as the other gave nothing but freedom. Both of these relationships are thrown into the start of the racing season and create a thrilling atmosphere. The tidbits of knowledge Francis imparts on the reader about the racing world would make any book great, but he also throws in the actions suspense and ever-important developing characters.
Whether you haven't picked up a Francis book or are a long time fan, you will enjoy the world, people, and events that encompass Bonecrack. Enjoy!
Two Unhappy Father-Son Relationship.......2001-11-05
This is a story of two father-son couples; the hero who is temporary in charge of a training stable and his cold-hearted father, and a spoiled son who wants to be a champion jockey and his fanatic, ruthless father. Their unhappy relationship is lightly and smoothly described in the fast-paced, thrilling story, yet I am strongly impressed by the relationship. Francis is really a good writer. And it is also interesting that a daily life of a training stable is vividly described.
Political Connection!.......1999-07-09
I will not give any of the plot away -- but after you have read this book ask yourself this question: Is there anyone high in the political world who matches the specifics of any major character in this mystery? The question is not sterile.
Excite by the best mystery writer today!.......1998-03-31
Dick Francis has done it again with a suspenceful tale to keep you riveted to the edge of your seat. Francis, an expert who uses the 'jockey' and racecourse backgrounds to their fullest extent, makes the reader look forward to all his books! A must read and try all of his other titles by Fawcett
Bonecrack by Dick Francis.......1998-03-28
Dick Francis is a formula writer of the highest callibre. His heros are believable and always slightly flawed. The love interest is never over done. The plot is always gripping because the characters are full bodied, the background well painted and real. What happens in this environment takes on the quality of a biography, not fiction. That his books usually involve horses and horse racing matters very little in terms of the overview. It is the pallet he uses, not the ensuing portrait. The bad guys usually gain the upper hand about two thirds of the way through the book and the hero always comes out on top. How he is able to do this is never because of any super human quality, but because of perseverance. Like his other books, this is a book about the triumph of an everyday guy over adversity. The hero is somebody you know or would like to know. His adventures are things that could happen to you in another life. This is wonderful reading. Worth saving for a rainy day.

A PAGE TURNER IF EVER WAS ONE!.......2006-09-28
After reading UNDER ORDERS recently decided to re-read some of Dick Francis' older material, and this 1971 release seemed a good one with which start.
There are many problems in Newmarket at Rowley Lodge stables, main one being that Neil Griffon's father, the stable's owner, is hospitalized with a broken leg and temporarily cannot run the stables. Neil takes upon himself to pinch hit, and since Neil and his father have never gotten along at all, his father does not like it one bit. But Neil carries on slowly winning everyone but his father over. Added to this is another very mentally disturbed father who through threats of violence forces his son on Neil as apprentice jockey; with some of the threats having already been carried out. The plot runs very smoothly, and though there are a few very close calls with violence, it eventually reaches a very satisfactory end. The conflict between two sets of fathers and sons offers interesting reading, with the two sons eventually understanding more than either father ever did or could. Thought provoking, indeed.
This book is tightly written with very interesting, believable characters who act and speak as they should. The focus is very much on horses in stable with some insight also offered into just how they are trained and entered into races. It is one of the more enjoyable books from Dick Francis I've read viewing racing from not only from the owner's point of view, but the trainer and the jockeys, as well. And now that most of his earlier books have been reissued by Berkley in new printings with very colorful cover paintings, the entire package is not only refreshing but worth the time spent.
Recommended.

One of Francis best.......2001-12-06
This book is a classic Francis book. I have read all his books and this is one of my favorites (together with to the hilt and nerve). The hero of this book much like other Francis books is a 30 years old Nile Griffin "a wonder kid". The main difference in this book is that the bad guys are known from the beginning and the book focus on the battle with and not on the discovery of the enemy. This book has all the things necessary for a good mystery book, and is read in one sitting. Enjoy.

Awesome book!!!.......2006-07-29
This book is really good! It's funny and extremly informative. The only pitfall I think this book has is that it seems more geared towards people who are already certified. On the flip side though, it does have extremly good advice on becoming certified, taking exams, finding you niche etc...I would recommend this book to amatuers who are still in school (like me) and certified veteran personnal trainers alike :)
Useful.......2006-03-15
It is a useful book, especially for someone new to the industry. The online link is especially nice.
Crash Course in Basic Business.......2005-09-30

Customer Reviews:
Worth buying.......2006-11-10
Demystifying and approachable. It's also cheap so if you leave it in a hotel room (as I did) you can inexpensively replace it. A nice supplement to Wine for Dummies by the same author.
Should be re-named White Wine for Beginners.......2001-10-11
This is an very entertaining book, but it is also a good overview of wines. The book explains the types of grapes that are used, and reviews the regions of the world where wine is produced. Even though the book has a number of "snob alert" icons throughout the book, it is clearly aimed at the "better" wines. If you are interested in Gallo, Paul Masson, etc. type of "jug" wines you need to go someplace else since they are not covered at all! It seems a little odd that Gallo that sells say 100 million cases of wine a year is excluded, yet a French producer of 50 cases of White Burgandy a year is mentioned. The vintage charts for white wine is dated, but overall the book goes a long way to take the mystery out of wine.
A Good Book Is Like A Good Wine.......1998-12-03
It is a good book for someone who had no idea of white wine. It gives a general idea of different types of grapes and the vocabulary of "wine". Most important of all, it points out that a good wine difinition varies from a person to others. Now, I really enjoy to drink my white wine and try to determine the flavor, the acidity, etc.

I have collected ornaments for years and buy every book I can find on the subject. A collector will value the information and price guide that the author has compiled but the photos will be worth purchasing this book. You just won't find that many different types in one book! Highly recommended!

Perennials are the most challenging and rewarding of all garden plants, and most gardeners need all the help they can get to grow them well. Perennials emerge from the ground in early spring, grow to full height, bloom, bear fruit, and then disappear with the first frost, only to do the same thing the following year and again the next. Add this to the fact that for the first year or two, perennials don't do much above the ground (they are growing their root structure), but after that they burst forth with amazingly vigorous growth, and you get an idea of the pleasures and tribulations of perennial gardening. The rewards, however, are rich: a wide array of flower forms and colors, structure and leaf, an ever-changing mid-level tapestry in the garden, plus a celebration of seasonal change. Few gardeners can resist perennials, but how to grow them better and more effortlessly?
Readers can count on Rodale books to be practical and detailed and to advocate organic gardening. While Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials does give information, as you would expect from Rodale, on soil building, climate, propagation and nontoxic pest and disease control, its emphasis is on design. The advice is down-to-earth, as in a sidebar entitled "Evergreen Perennials: Myth or Reality?" that points out that although some perennials are touted as evergreen, and do keep their leaves through the winter (such as Epimedium, Ajuga, and Bergenia), they are often so tattered by winter storms that they shouldn't be counted on to beautify the garden off-season.
Though packed with all sorts of useful information, the meat of the book is the encyclopedia of perennials. From acanthus to yucca, each comes with a color photo, cultural and cultivar information, as well as suggestions on use. Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials is an invaluable reference for anyone interested in these rewarding, though somewhat demanding, plants. --Valerie Easton
Book Description
The revised 10th Anniversary Edition of Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials is the last word on growing lush, healthy gardens using hundreds of gorgeous, versatile perennials. Highlights of this new edition include a beautiful new interior design; seven new gardens by well-known landscape artists from around the country; over 75 new encyclopedia entries, with hundreds of new plants added; and three new chapters: Perennial Flower Finder, Perennial Combinations, and Growing with the Design. The result is a winning mix of information and inspiration-and beautiful color photographs-to take one's dream garden from concept to reality. 'A great deal of expertise and thorough research has gone into the making of this encyclopedia, and it shows on every page.'-Christopher Lloyd, author of The Well-Tempered Garden and The Adventurous Gardener 'An excellent reference book for all gardeners, from the novice to the expert. It will definitely be on my bookshelf.'-Dr. Allan M. Armitage, author of Herbaceous Perennial Plants and Allan Armitage on Perennials

A Dumb Fan.......2001-07-26
This series of books is the best value for the money and this one is no different. I am a graphic designer of 2 years and most of the useful knowledge I have obtained in order to use Photoshop, Illustrator, Pagemaker and now, Quark, has been gleaned from the Dummies books. They begin at the beginning in language that anyone who is literate can understand. This one lacks the humor that I have come to enjoy, but still, it gets the job done. If you sit at your computer with this book on your desk and work with it, you will soon be laying out your pages and setting margin guides, drawing paths for your type and using graphics.
Great book and very useful!.......2000-05-13
I had to learn Quark over a weekend to typeset a book I was working on and this book made it a snap. Instructions are very easy to follow and any other questions can be easily resolved following the index. If you are as impatient as I am this book will be really handy when you are trying to get your arms around Quark - which now is one of my favorite programs.

A neccessary read for all African Americans and others........1999-05-29
This is it. The wisdom of the social/political sages in one brief, easy-to-read summary. This is a book for your liabrary, coffee table, school, or communting experience.
Each chapter captures the essence of the source, the probable solutions, the accountability and the prognosis.
Bob Law has done us all a great service.
A Hip Analysis of the present condition of Blacks in the U.S.......1998-10-28
A well written and articulate book, but however seems to be a rehash or "term paper", comprised of the analysis of the writings of Dr. John Henric Clarke, Molefi Asante, Amos Wilson, Naim Akbar, Cancellor Williams, and Claude Anderson. An excelent book for the junior high school student, or high school student, but leans too heavily on blaming the victim rather than providing viable solutions.
