Customer Reviews:
The first novel in the series.......2007-09-28
This was the first novel in the Judge Deborah Knott series. After reading other novels, and also the short story collection, I went back to this one which establishes the main character's start as a judge. The novel reflects the changing attitudes in the south, and the changing economy. Positions on the bench had been reserved for WASP men. Deborah is fed up with the attitudes of some of the judges she encounters while working as an attorney in their courtrooms. A position is coming open where the encumbent is stepping down. She decides to file for office. Her strongest opponent turns out to be a black male candidate. So how will people decide when confronted with a black man and a white woman, neither of whom would have stood a chance in previous history?
Deborah has many things working against her. Besides being a woman in what had been a male dominated profession, her father was a notorious bootlegger, but one with connections. Her election campaign runs in parallel to her legal career as she becomes involved in a cold case. An 18 year old woman wants her to investigate the death of her mother, murdered when the young woman was an infant. The case had never been solved.
The murder case is disturbing. There are people who do not want it reopened. She is assisted by a childhood friend who is the chief deputy in the sheriff's office, especially after another murder occurs (see the latest novel "Hard Row" to see how that relationship develops). There are some surprising revelations and a surprise ending to the case.
About her desire to be a judge - well, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Her father knows where some bodies are buried, and he can play hardball when he wants to.
Slow, never taking off.......2007-06-18
Maybe I was not in the mood for this book, I do not know, but it seemed pretty slow from start to finish with lots of details which did not help the plot to get along, it is definitely not a novel to read when you are looking for some suspense and mystery novel which you would stay up whole night to finish. I would say it concentrate too much on social acceptance issues now and then in North Carolina, which is fine if you are into that kind of things, but it bogs the plot down a little if you are looking for fair dinkum suspense/mystery novel.
bootleggers daughter.......2006-07-05
This was a most enjoyable book; well written and has enough plot twists to keep you interested. I'm glad I started with this series at the beginning, since there are numerous ongoing subplots. Deborah Knott is a winner!
Female Lawyer Runs for open Judge Seat.......2005-06-14
First book by Margaret Maron that I have read, and the first book in the Deborah Knott series (not counting the prequel). "Bootlegger's Daughter" is the winner of the Edgar, Anthony, Agatha, & Macavity Awards. There are currently eleven books in the series (including a prequel to "Bootlegger's Daughter" titled "Bloody Kin" and a collection of short stories).
Deborah is a female lawyer in Colleton County, North Carolina who has decided to run in the current judicial election (and is the daughter of a noted ex-bootlegger). While Deborah is running for said election, she has also been asked by a young woman that she used to babysit, Gayle Whitehead, to look into the death of that woman's mother, Jane Whitehead, 18 years ago. Gayle is less concerned with who killed her mother than as to why she was killed (not that she wouldn't like to know the killer).
The book opens with baby Gayle and dead mother Jane being discovered in a old mill (May 1972). Then quickly jumps up to the "present time" of April 1990. At the very beginning of the book, I was concerned that I might not like the main character, and some of the plot points and dialogue that came up. As I read further, though, the book grew on me, and by the end, I rather liked the main character. The main character, and a few others, are fully developed personalities, though the lessor characters can seem a little thin. The plot is solid, the mystery is well-designed and plausible, and the setting is well developed. Overall, I would give the book 4.40 stars.

A Writerly Southern Mystery.......2004-05-01
Although the rest of the series is more typically genre fiction, this book reads at least as much as a Southern novel of place and relationship as it is a murder mystery. I enjoyed Maron's skill in developing three-dimensional characters and evoking a setting so real I could smell the dogwood and barbecue sauce. I didn't mind the slow early pace because I enjoyed the likeable, complicated characters, the window into North Carolina culture and politics, and the plot that simmered enticingly until the heat poured on at the end.
I think the Judge Deborah Knott series in general is readable but uneven. And, if you are looking for a fast-paced mystery thriller, this might not be the right choice. However, this book stands well on its own as an excellent novel, engaging, complex, and beautifully written. It's one of the few mystery novels I've read more than once.
Product Description
With a steamy Southern plot and a sassy new heroine, this Edgar Award winning novel debuts an exceptional new series. Attorney Deborah Knott is North Carolinas answer to V.I. Warshawski, a legal sleuth with a knack for sniffing out the most baffling crimes. Deborah has just done the unthinkableentered the heated race for judge of old-boy-ruled Colleton County. The only female candidate, shes busy reeling in voters and giving campaign speeches. There couldnt be a worse time for Gayle Whitehead to beg Deborah to investigate the 18-year-old, unsolved murder of Gayles mother, Janie. Gayle wants the busy attorney to poke around for any new clues the police may have missed all these years. Unlikely, thinks Deborah; until she discovers that not all the details of Janies case made it out of confidential police files. Filled with the patter of Southern voices and populated with a cast of colorful characters, Bootleggers Daughter expertly unwinds a funny, cunningly-crafted tale of mystery and deceit in North Carolinas backwoods

Good Read.......2000-09-18
I thought the character was compelling and the locale well wrought. Kept me interested to the end. As a new writer, I am interested in what wins awards, how the author handles the first person, and the role of the amateur detective. I would have been happy to have written this one.,
Customer Reviews:
Unsatisfying.......2000-02-13
None of the many characters is given more than a few pages for the reader to get to know them, and the result is that the successes or failures of their individual quests ends up not having very much impact. There is also a disturbing story line involving a female character who is turned into the mental equivalent of a child and then bedded and wedded by a hero(?) who apparently isn't bothered by the fact that she's still sucking her thumb. Definitely not my cup of tea.

NEW EDITION COMING.......2007-06-28
This is a wonderful resource for teachers and students. The author does a superb job of setting a focus for the class, guiding you through the practice, and leaving you with reflections for life off the mat. I let my copy get away from me and have been searching for another copy at a reasonable price. I WROTE THE AUTHOR IN JUNE 2007 AND SHE INFORMED ME SHE IS WORKING ON A NEW EDITION TO BE RELEASED SOON. I suspect that will cause exploiters of her first edition to rethink their pricing.
Wonderful!.......2007-03-24
A helpful tool for students as well as teachers. Each concept ceases to remain redundant.
Yoga Lessons.......2007-01-12
This is just what my daughter needed. Although it was hard to obtain, I got it from one of your sub-sources. It is beautiful!
Maybe would be great for beginning teachers.......2006-09-22
I have been teaching for 3 years, and thought this book would be a great addition to my yoga library, something I could turn to for inspiration in my teaching.. However, while there are a few inspiring points in this book, the title of it is "Guiding Yoga's Light: Yoga LESSONS for Yoga Teachers"--and I found the actual lessons to be very brief and lacking. But the topic of this book is a great idea, and I am glad someone has at least thought of the idea to write on this subject.
Great tool for building class themes & scripts.......2006-06-05
I use this book all the time for developing new classes. The lessons are fabulous. The downside is that it does not list nearly enough poses that go along with the lesson. It's a great starting point but you will need other resources to develop good class sequences to accompany the lesson.

Zen Reflections not Tea Parties.......2005-09-22
I purchased this book while planning a Tea Party. The statement "15 seasonal Tea Parties" on the front of the book is misrepresentative of the actual contents. This book is focused more on the art of Tea drinking and Relaxation techniques and suggestions than directions on how to conduct a Tea Party. The back cover of the book is more properly representative when it states "you'll find the perfect way to enjoy the moment". It is a Zen Tea focus, not serve 20 people Tea and Crumpets for your mother's birthday focus.
A Special Gift for Tea Lovers.......2000-07-06
For many people the drinking of tea has become both a tradition and a ceremony. This book is written for these "tea people," whether they are just beginning a tradition of tea drinking or whether they've enjoyed tea for years. The author shares many thoughts and ideas for setting aside a special time each day for enjoying tea. She offers suggestions for special tea celebrations throughout the year and includes meditations for each celebration. She also covers basic information on the history of tea and gives a number of simple recipes for dishes to serve at tea time. However, this is not a recipe book. Its writing primarily feeds the minds, souls, and hearts of tea lovers. Finally, the photo montages in the book are beautiful.

A miracle of a book--a joyous celebration of the unspoken but deeply felt bond between animals and people and, in Roger Caras's words, "a celebration of life in the face of death".
Customer Reviews:
A must for animal lovers.......2007-07-09
It is a simple book, written for the average person. Nothing fancy, just a book written from the heart. If you've ever had the love of a cat, dog, or any other creature in your life then please get this book. It will warm your heart and make you feel what it's like to know true, sincere love. For those who think that humans are the only creatures with souls and feelings, you should read this book and maybe realize that we are truly not alone, there are intelligent and caring lifeforms all around us.
poetic, true and haunting.......2007-01-31
Hard to believe this book would ever go out of print, or that the author apparently wrote nothing else. I got this book when it first came out, and periodically reread it -- and I'm not even a cat person. A wonderful book, beautifully written, about life, love, loss and renewal. Get a copy, this one is a jewel that shouldn't be missed.
A beautiful book celebrating the lives of cats.......2006-08-17
Lyrical, poignant, tender, this is a book clearly written by a cat lover. A slim memoir of her time as an veterinary research assistant in the oncology department of NYC's Animal Medical Center, the author is above all hopeful, despite the inevitable early demise that awaits most of her patients. She knows that while the doctors may not be able to cure the cancers of their feline patients, they can certainly improve the quality of life, allowing the cats to live out their lives as happily as medically possible. Highly recommended.
The Best Kind of Love.......2006-02-19
What a moving account of someone on "the inside" of the world of veterinary medicine. If anyone cannot be touched at the love and compassion of these "angels of mercy" working in the field of animals who are not only ill, but know will never recover, I would hate to believe it. But they have the best kind of love of all - they know the one they love is not going to be around "forever". They are willing to take the chance of being hurt by losing someone they love. And, if we will admit it, that is true of all love. They go into this with their eyes wide open, as should we, knowing that the time we have with those we love is temporary, and we must cherish and make the most of that time.
Moving...Touching..........2005-03-03
This a wonderful story. I'm a cat owner myself, and this story helped me treasure my kitties even more. I highly recommend this book to all cat owners.

Eloquently Authored.......2000-06-15
Samantha Mooney worked for 10 years on the eighth floor of New York's famous Animal Medical Center - the eighth floor housing the cancer clinic. All animal people will be deeply moved and inspired by Ms. Mooney's story of cats approaching a prolonged painful death. The little cats she came to know so well through their illnesses, will bring smiles amidst tears with the felines' courage, patience and spiritedness as they face each day living with a terminal illness. This slim little book is filled with warmth and sensitivity of inspiring lessons in human love, joy, loss, and triumph over grief.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as Rodale's version.......2006-12-22
This book just doesn't cut it when compared to other similar text like Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening
There is nothing particularly wrong with the book. It has the requisite parts such as a discussion of organic gardening, the reasons for it, and why you should use it. It also has a fairly good chapter on various vegetables and how to grow them. It's just not my first choice for a reference book. I was highly disappointed with having picked this book first and then finding the Rodale book later.
Save a couple bucks and go with the Rodale book instead.
Great Comprehensive Text.......2006-06-30
Organic Gardening for the 21st Century is a must-have book for the organic gardener. It's well-written, enjoyable to read, very interesting, and full of realistic "how to" tips. Mr. Fedor explains different perspectives and he says why certain things are important, rather than just telling readers what to do. I like to understand why, so I can consider all the options and consequences. He does a great job of describing pests and how to deal with them. It would have helped me immensely to see photos of each pest by the description. There's enough technical information to make it specific (i.e. plant names), but not so much that it's like reading a Latin textbook. The photos and illustrations are terrific. It's just a beautiful AND useful book. Not only did I read it cover to cover, but I continue to use it as a reference book. It's well worth the purchase price!
A Pleasure To Read.......2004-11-16
I enjoy books that talk to me. John Fedor writes this book in the first person using his grandparents and then his own gardening experiences. He communicates in a style that makes you feel as if you are right there beside him in his gardens. I was hooked immediately. The book is a treasure chest of practical information (as a Reader's Digest book always is) without the overload of information that can cause you to give up your garden before you have begun. He assures you with wit and wonderful drawings that you can accomplish an organic garden in even the most humble of spaces with the most humble of budgets. The photographs are worthy of being published in a DK book. They are always practical though and relate to Fedor's text. They are realistic of what you can and can't expect. I call it practical eye candy. For those gardeners who already have a basic knowledge of gardening...this book won't disappoint you. There is a wealth of intermediate level information that will help you too. Enjoy!
A very complete guide.......2003-03-21
This Reader's Digest published book covers a lot of material (from compost to saving seed, from pest control to crop rotation, from companion planting to heritage varieties, from herbs to even landscaping and tools) in only 288 pages, yet manages to answer most common gardening questions. There is even a directory in the back of the book covering vegetables, fruits & herbs that commonly grow in the U.S. and Canada, giving varieties & growing instructions. The photos in the book are beautiful and inspiring for the aspiring gardener.
I've looked at quite a few gardening books, yet this guide is the one I keep going back to.

Fonts can make or break a layout, and good designers know it. Knowing what a bitmapped font is might not seem like a big deal...until you go to print it. The author, Robin Williams, explains how a font that is bitmapped will have very different results on a printer than one that is not. How to Boss Your Fonts Around will also show you the merits of investing your time in organizing your fonts through a font manager.
In a day when there are now "Beat Generation" fonts for the Mac, good font use and management is essential. Williams, Mac expert and the author of bestsellers such as The Non-Designer's Design Book and The Little Mac Book, goes into great detail on the origin and creation of great fonts. Did you ever wonder why so many fonts are named after big cities (such as New York and Geneva)? Turns out, they're all in the same font family, and knowing the characteristics of that grouping will enhance how you use them. Williams provides a full glossary of terms, and the book is rich with visual examples. She treats fonts as the tools they are, showing the reader all the necessary care and maintenance to allow for great design and for the text to shine through. --Jennifer Buckendorff
Book Description
Fonts. They seem to have a life of their own. And they can cause no end of heartache to the harried desktop or webtop publisher. Perfectly lovely documents on screen can suddenly transmogrify into a perfect nightmare when printed. So how can you control these willful beasts? Get a copy of this book and end your power struggle with fonts forever.
How To Boss Your Fonts Around has been completely revised and updated for the Second Edition. It's a must-have primer on font technology and font management for anyone who works on a Macintosh. It's updated for Mac OS 8, and includes all new coverage of how to work with and manage fonts for the Web. You'll learn to identify and work with all the different kinds of fonts available, from PostScript to TrueType to Type 1, bitmapped to screen, outline to printer, resident to downloadable and more. There's coverage of Adobe Type Manager, ATM Deluxe, Suitcase, Master Juggler, Font Reserve, new font management tools and utilities, installing fonts, and solving font conflicts. A detailed reference section answers common questions and problems, tells you how to acquire fonts, and offers an amazingly detailed glossary. This is the essential troubleshooting guide to taking control of fonts and learning to use them efficiently and effectively.
Customer Reviews:
Mac-Oriented Book.......2001-09-03
Although the Amazon editorial review calls Williams a Mac expert, it doesn't make clear that this book is pretty exclusively Mac-oriented. Some of it will be useful to Windows users, but there are surely other, similar font books on the market more useful for Windows users. If I had realized this before I started making notes in the margins, I would have returned it.
Everything you wanted to know about fonts..........2001-06-14
As a typesetter in a large corporation I found this book very helpful when I recently had to organize our fonts on 12 computers. It clearly explains the difference in the various types of fonts and how to use them properly. It also covers in detail all the different type management software (ATM, Suitcase, etc.). After speaking with several designers, it appears that fonts can be the single biggest nightmare and this book would be an asset to any designers library.
Not so good..........2000-09-26
I bought Robin's book aobut 2 weeks ago and I have read it over and over. I found that the book was not helpful in getting my fonts organised. I am left with fundamental questions unanswered and a lot of frustration. I am still looking for a book that will show me how to sort my fonts what to keep what to throw and how to do it. This book has some good back ground informationon the benefits of ATM, and the history but what about open fonts, and master fonts? It's dated and not helpful.
Probably the best writer on typography around........1999-09-02
Except for her mild endorsement of grunge (why have we spent hundreds of years designing typefaces that are both readable and beautiful only to have a generation of" designers" design deconstructed faces that are likely to be used only once in a lifetime), Robin Williams is probably the most articulate and literate writer on typography around, digital or traditional. She is sensitive to those qualities that have somehow been lost on those who have been brought up facing a monitor rather than a type book, type case or drawing board. Too many people in business have been led to believe, and accept the idea, that a typist is automatically a typographer/designer. Every designer who has grown up on the computer should have all of her books at their side, along with Strunk & White, Fowler's Modern English Usage, Roget's Thesaurus and a good dictionary.
Excellent design and crash avoidance techniques.......1997-06-20
"He who dies with the most fonts wins," is a fact of life for a lot of desktop designers for print and the web. However, having tons of fonts of every weight, format and variety gobbles up lots of system memory, and corrupted or conflicting fonts cause crashes. This book tells all on how to get your collection under control, and keep your fonts organized, in good shape, and zipped in place for when you need them.
This book is also well written, and will keep you alert and interested, which is most refreshing because I've found many how-to design/computer management books must be read with toothpicks propping up your eyes.
It's also just the right length, concise and everything is clearly, not condecendingly, explained. It's a must read for any Mac designer, from the newest newbie to the most advanced.
