Book Description

Meet Bubbles, the irrepressible heroine of this irresistibly entertaining new mystery series-a tall, blond, and gorgeous, local bleach-blonde with a wacky family, a hot potential lover, and a bad case of murder.

Convinced there's more to life than giving blue dye jobs at Sandy's House of Beauty, Bubbles Yablonsky has done what few in Lehigh, PA, would dare: she's gone back to school. And if her day gig, journalism classes, and on-the-job training at a local paper aren't enough, there's always her family to liven things up-from her bottom-feeding, social-climbing ex-husband to her precocious teenage daughter to her gun-toting mother, who just escaped from the Polish Old Folks Apartments.

But when Bubbles stumbles on a crime scene on the way home from an assignment, she is suddenly up to her roots in a nasty murder investigation . . . with suspects ranging from a greedy steel tycoon to a sexy photographer named Stiletto. It could be the Big Break she's been waiting for.

If it doesn't kill her first.

With her big hair and even bigger heart, Bubbles Yablonsky is a delightful and winning protagonist that readers will root for every step of the way. Bubbles Unbound heralds the debut of an exciting new series-and a welcome addition to women's commercial fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Bubbily fun.......2007-10-10

Many friends suggested the Bubbles series and I took the opportunity recently to try it out, starting at the beginning. It was very enjoyable.

Bubbles is a hairdresser, she's also got a model's figure and she's blonde. She also has taken the opportunity offered her by her ex-husband trying to take away her allowance (after her supporting him throughout his courses to become a lawyer) by inventively doing as many courses as she can in the local community college. She thinks that she's found her role in life in the Journalism course, but she's still doing hair in Sandy's House of Beauty, after all she does have a daughter to support.

She gets drawn into a murder with the delectable Steve Stiletto, and her vow of celibacy and her very life is in danger.

It owes a lot to Janet Evanovich but is quite a fun read. It kept me enthralled throughout. The Twists that the story took weren't very unexpected but did add to the enjoyment and kept it from being stale.

1 out of 5 stars nobody can be that stupid.......2007-07-20

Don't bother with this book. Nobody could be that stupid in real life. There is very little plot to go with the idiot main charecter.

4 out of 5 stars Fun summer read.......2007-06-21

Strohmeyer is of the Evanovich school as she writes a quirky, gung-ho beautician/reporter-wannabe who finds herself involved in mysteries. "Bubbles Unbound" may be the first book in the series, as it gives a solid introduction to everyone, including the beauty shop, Two Guys College, and Stiletto. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments.

There's also a nice little mystery here. Because I read "Bubbles Ablaze" first, I knew that two red herrings were actually good guys, and I also learned the ultimate fate of the perps there. I can't really recommend "Bubbles Ablaze" because it was so strung-out and unfocused, but that problem is not present in "Bubbles Unbound."

Instead we get a stream of colorful characters and a mystery that won't leave you depressed. One of the minuses from a reader's point of view is that Strohmeyer inserts "beauty recipes" at the end of a few chapters, much as some romance writers print recipes there for reasons I have yet to figure out. There aren't many and by golly, I'm going to take notes on some, but they do interfere with the reading. For instance, a color rinse concoction has to be preceded by someone using it in the text. (But it sounds like it'll cover up my gray hairs well.)

One of the things I hope the author plays with is that Bubbles, while she never paid attention to much of her schooling besides journalism, has had an extensive and far-reaching (sometimes obscure) education, thanks to her ex-husband being forced by the courts to pay for it. She does take advantage of that in one (two?) place(s) here but I'd like to see more. It's a really fun concept, especially for the sometimes-ignorant Bubbles!

A co-worker recommended this series to me because it's one of her favorites. I can certainly see where a vacation could only be improved by packing this book instead of some dreary, too-serious murder mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Bubbles Galore.......2007-02-02

I read this on the recommendation of another reviewer on this site - Eva Biediger - and am thankful I did. Afer wading through the Sofie Metropolis books, this one is a hoot, even if thhe author is equally dazzled by her mentor, Janet Evanovich. And even if sometimes I want to slap Bubbles when she ruminates on her nail polish while being interrogated by lawyers and publishers over a $3.5 million dollar defamation case.
Strohmeyer wins you over with her great location and character descriptions and the hairdressing thing - though I hated the recipes being inserted into the middle of dramatic action. I like Bubbles and I'll keep up with her adventures.

3 out of 5 stars Passable.......2006-12-05

I am being very generous by giving this book 3 stars. The mystery part was pretty good. But the atmosphere was bad. This was suppose to be a cozy mystery, but I couldn't find anything cozy about it. I did not like the language, personality, choice of words, attitude, or style of dress of Bubbles. The only good thing about her, is that she had a good relationship with her mother and daughter, and loved them dearly. In the end, she solved the mystery of 2 deaths.

But I am not encouraging anybody not to try these books - I know someone who absolutely loves Bubbles books after having borrowed my copy of "Bubbles Unbound". I'm just more conservative than Bubbles, so I could not relate to her.

            Book Description

sing a Micheneresque approach to chronicle the significant events and adventures of Aglirta history and the Silvertree clan, Greenwood creates a magical saga where purveyors of magic form an uneasy alliance with barbaric warlords in defense against non-human shapeshifters and practitioners of the dark arts. In the Band of Four series we were briefly introduced to the Silent House, the ancestral estate of the Silver-tree clan. This dungeon-like stronghold acts a a battery of enscorcellment and is powered by the family curse and all those trapped within. The Silent House itself becomes more than an armed stronghold-it becomes a living thing, dedicated to protecting its lord, drawing on his family's powers, and morphing to attack and protect invaders. But by doing so the house perpetuates a curse where the defended become the trapped, not just for now, but for all eternity. Filled with sorcery and battles between the dead and the undead, as well as plots of sinister deception and insidious manipulation, The Silent House is the first epic chronicle of the land and people of Aglirta.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-10

All who love to read Ed Greenwoon should read this fast action book also.

3 out of 5 stars Great story, not so great writing.......2006-10-25

This was one of those books that was a pure random purchase. My fiance was looking for a new book and picked this one up. She liked the summary on the back so we got it. We went home and she read the first five pages at which point she put the book down and said she couldn't read any more.
            This made me curious.
I then proceeded to struggle through the book. I had a very difficult time understanding what was happening sometimes and the switches from past tense to present tense in the same sentence were overwhelming. Much of the way the grammar was presented disturbed me. I am all about interesting writing styles but come on. It should still make sense and be an entertaining read.
            And still I trudged on.
I enjoyed the first story about Ravengar and just as I was beginning to like him the story changed to another character. I didn't get into any other character after that. I didn't get into any other story after that although over time everything kind of came together. Kind of, although I could have done without ninety percent of it.
I liked it but it was so difficult for me to read it and feel good about reading it. I remember one thing very fondly from the book. "He spit thoughtfully." That phrase made me feel disconcerted.
            Okay, enough chatter.
It was a good book and I recommend it to those who like to read very descriptive and active-moving stories and those that can deal with writing that can confuse you at times.
I do not recommend it to those people that just want to sit back and enjoy a book. This book expects a little more out of you.

5 out of 5 stars exciting Aglirta anthology.......2004-05-29

On Aglirta, resides Silent House, the Silvertree clan ancestral estate. For centuries, the dynasty consistently politically outwitted their foes. However, the real power behind Silvertree is wizardry for this clan consists of the most powerful wizards known on Aglirta. However, not as well known is the price paid for this prowess. Some would say curse, as souls become part of a depository controlled by the Silent House, which over two thousand Sirl Reckoning has become sentient, alive, and protective of its "wards". These are the stories of ten lost souls sheltered by an increasingly intelligent essence.

This exciting anthology provides readers with an engaging look at Aglirta, world of the Band of Four series, but is much more than just a typical sword and sorcery collection. Each tale contains an underlying caution based on Lord Acton's concept that power corrupts, etc. The key characters are often bewildered as to why they did a deed as Ed Greenwood cleverly delves into cause, effect, and after-effect through a person feeling guilt and questioning their motives though acting courageously. These heroes understand they make mistakes and though suffer pangs of sorrow, they can admit errors. Mr. Greenwood is at its best with this fine look at one of his not-Forgotten Realms.

In the midst of a carb-cutting craze, Dr. Gabe Mirkin reminds us that not all carbohydrates are alike. Drawing on a post-Atkins approach, Dr. Mirkin and coauthor Diana Mirkin, approach eating and fitness in terms of a healthy hearts rather than a smaller jean size. The centerpiece of their approach is exercise paired with "ASH,"a meatless and whole grain diet designed to reduce chances of suffering from heart attack, diabetes and stroke. The "miracle" of the title refers to how quickly and dramatically this diet can lower blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol counts. Using an eight-week workbook format, the authors offer clear explanations of healthy heart concepts including cholesterol, blood sugar body fat and fiber. They offer accessible assessment tools (body mass index, the apple vs. pear body shape and the "pinch test"). Writing with a clear and engaging style, the Mirkins point readers toward the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hardened arteries and dementia. As author of the bestselling Sports Medicine Book, Dr. Mirkin emphasizes fitness as much as food. The organization of the book into eight-week modules can be confusing. But the specific ideas including recipes, food lists and fitness options are practical and persuasive. --Barbara Mackoff

I've been doing Dr. Mirkin's suggestions for 5 months and I've lost 20 pounds and I'm eating like a pig and enjoying every bite. I'm never hungry and have 9% body fat now and it's not hard to maintain. I also love the blood test coupon in the book. I took it to my doctor and ran them all so I have a bench mark. Best $ I've spent in a long time.

"Little is nobler than presiding over a kettle of homemade soup."
            (Unknown)

This is a cookbook you will likely read in most any room in addition to your kitchen -- hearty and stirring tales of 100 soups for more than 40 worldwide occasions ...

Solley invites us to "look at a bowl of soup and see the evolution of foods created in remote locations over thousands and thousands of years, made into recipes passed from hand to hand, transported on the backs of Indian, Asian and Arab traders, Roman soldiers and European explorers all the way to your supermarket." Soup as an indicator is underscored when Solley invites us to regard the recipes, and at the same time think upon different cultures with personalized celebrations, their sacredness of family intimacy and rites of passage.

An Exaltation of Soups is divided into four parts peppered with marginal Soup Notes containing riddles, quotes, wives' tales, advice, lyrics, sound wisdom and cautionary maxims. Not surprising, her six pages of Contents runs longer than her remarkably concise History of Soup.

            Part I

Soup Basics containing soup history, proverbs, reflections and some very complete directions and for soup stocks, including the history of and directions for portable Pocket Soup, soup sometimes known as Veal Glue or Cake Soup.

In Soup Reflections, she cites an anecdote from Winston Churchill's soup humor:

"Well, dinner would have been splendid if the wine had been as cold as the soup, the beef as rare as the service, the brandy as old as the fish and the maid as willing as the Dutchess."

            Part II

Soups of Passage celebrate worldwide cultural experiences from birth to marriage and finally, death.

            Part III

Soups of Purpose from Losing Weight to Stimulating Appetite, Wooing a Lover to Treating Hangover.

            Part IV

            Soups of Piety and Ritual

These take you through the entire calendar and to many civilizations from New Year's Day to year's end and Kwanzaa.

On Birth from France: "Boiled Water" Garlic Soup. This is simply French bread, olive oil, water, 24 cloves of garlic, a couple of herbs and a garnished of Gruyere cheese. With a couple of exceptions, Soups To Celebrate and Recover From Giving Birth "are offered in small 'at home' portions, meant to be prepared quickly and served immediately," Solley tells us.

On Marriage from China: Red Bean and Lotus Seed Soup - even simpler, this ceremonial soup calls for water, red beans, lotus seeds, tangerine skin and brown sugar. Simple is good.

On Marriage again, from France: Blandness has its virtue. Take water, many onions, a few potatoes, tapioca, an egg yolk, heavy cream and butter. This also sounds after a day of extreme stress.

Upon death, from France: Combine French bread, chicken meat, carrots, chicken stock and ground saffron.

In her Soups of Purpose section under To Lose Weight, she offers a few soup admonitions:

Eat soup at the beginning of a meal. Makes you feel full early.

Soup fools the body's calorie sensors. This is good.

Soup as food is less voluminous.

Soup is complicated to eat and takes more motor skills

Another Soup of Purpose: To stimulate an appetite -- Avocadolucious Soup Combine chicken stock, heavy cream a chile pepper and garlic. Mix with pureed avocados, experiment with garnishes.

Soups for wooing lovers: Aphrodisiac Almond Soup (for two):

Combine hard-boiled egg yolks, almonds, raspberries, chicken stock, light cream and honey. Solley offers Christopher Marlowe's, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love," on the facing page.

Soups to Chase a Hangover, and there's very, many remedies -

Beer Soup from Denmark: Take some pumpernickel bread, Danish dark ale, water, lemon juice and sugar. Garnish with heavy cream, cinnamon.

Soups for Eastertide, this one from Albania: Bean Soup: This calls for white beans, water, olive oil, onions, tomato paste, parsley, chili powder, mint and whipped yogurt as a garnish.

From Hungary, a Christmas Wine Soup: A goodly amount of white Hungarian wine, much less water, sugar, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks and eight egg yolks. This is a hot soup.

Another Christmas soup from Spain: Iced White Almond Soup - Combine white bread, raw almonds, garlic, salt, olive oil and sherry vinegar with fruit, shrimp or toasted almonds for garnish. The author quotes "Sancho Panza on Soup and Life," on the opposite flip page.

Soups need not be long litanies of ingredients, nor a "mix of leftovers." The legendary soups in this book feature soups locally famed, usually very simple, inherently delicious, frequently endowed with magical powers.

Review by Marty Martindale, Largo FL, 2005

5 out of 5 stars Pat Solley knows soup.......2005-01-31

Pat does a great job keeping the reader's interest in this fine book. Solley's strong suit has always been her outstanding research abilities & it is clearly evident in her first published book about soups. Check her website www.soupsong.com for even more fun. Even if Pat wasn't my sister, I would still be hugely proud of her efforts!

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Treatment of Soup Recipes and Traditions.......2005-01-13

`An Exaltation of Soups' is author Patricia Solley's published scrapbook of stories, proverbs, wit, wisdom, and recipes about soup. This is not my opinion. The author states this fact as clearly as you may please in her introduction. The author is far more of a researcher than she is a culinary professional, as she is chief of Research Communications and Public Relations for the FBI. Yes, that's the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington.

In the spirit of being much more about the lore of soups than a culinary exploration as you will find in culinary specialists James Peterson and Barbara Kafka, the recipes are not organized by season or ingredient or thick versus thin or smooth versus chunky. They are organized by use. How do we human inventors of cooking over 10,000 years ago use this food preparation called soup?

The first Part of four (4) is `Soup Basics'. It does not deal with soup cooking so much as with a speculative history of the origins of soup, a collection of soup proverbs and clichés, a small collection of stories about soup, and recipes for soup stocks. This includes seven basic stock recipes plus a technique for clarifying stock and a technique for concentrating stock. While this collection has several stocks you may not easily find elsewhere such as a Hungarian chicken stock and a Japanese fish stock, all the recipes are relatively simple. Simpler, for sure, than what you may find from the CIA (Culinary Institute of America, not the foreign colleague of the FBI) textbook or cooking experts such as Jeremiah Tower or Judy Rodgers. They are much simpler than expert soup specialists such as Seattle's Michael Congdon, the author of the new recipe collection, `S.O.U.P.S'. But then, this book is not so much about cooking soups as soup's place in the goings and comings of various human communities.

The second Part is `Soups of Passage'. Here is where the book comes into its own, as we are given recipes for various important events in our lives, or at least in the lives of members of some very important cultures. The four `passages' represented here are birth, confirmation, marriage, and death. It is no surprise that the largest selection by far are those recipes developed to celebrate marriage, including the famous Italian wedding soup with meatballs. Oddly, I seem to recall that the name of this soup with meatballs has less to do with a human wedding as it does with the wedding of ingredients.

The third Part is `Soups of Purpose'. Here, unlike the preceding and following chapters, the soup recipes are constructed to accomplish a specific culinary objective, so that there is a connection between ingredients and cooking techniques and the soup's use other than simply tradition. The most famous of this breed is the `Les Halle Onion Soup', which I had the pleasure of sampling at a Les Halle bistro in Paris at 5:00 AM, along with the traditional glass of red wine. The author recounts a tale from Harold Pinter about the playwright's ending a night of carousing in Paris at a similar open air market bistro with fellow playwright Samuel Beckett, who was kind enough to let Pinter slip into a slumber with head on table while Beckett retrieved a large glass of water and bicarbonate of soda. Unfortunately, Ms. Solley says nothing about the tradition of red wine with the onion soup.

The last and longest Part is `Soups of Piety and Ritual'. Unlike the second chapter, these are all soups dealing with a particular date or holiday that occurs every year. The holidays so honored are New Years Day, St. Tavy's Day (represented by a leek soup celebrating a Welsh saint), Eastertide (including soups for the carnival at the beginning of Lent, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter, Jewish Festivals (including soups for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Passover), Islamic Festivals (Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr), Christmas, and Kwanzaa. I am really pleased to see recipes for Islamic festivals appear in an English book for general audiences. This is the second such book I have seen. The first is Nigella Lawson's new book `Feast'. It is great fun to see how important the soup borsht is, as at least two different recipes, one Russian and one Jewish, appear in the book.

Aside from the fun to be found in reading the sidebars, headnotes, and other commentary about soup, the most useful function of this book would be as a source of recipes to fit various events in one's life. Many writers make a great deal of how food brings people together over the dinner table. This benefit is doubled if one can prepare dishes behind which there are centuries of tradition. While bread can probably outdo soup as a type of food that is most heavily wrapped in tradition, soup certainly seems to have the edge on most other types of cooking. What makes this especially useful in this context is that almost all the recipes are relatively easy. This being the case, there is some chance that these are not the very best recipes possible for these dishes. But, the book has still served its purpose if you are looking for an Italian Lenten soup and you find `Minestrone di magro'. If you are not satisfied with Ms. Solley's recipe, you can always fetch a copy of a recipe from Marcella Hazan or Lydia Bastianich. At least if you don't have a cookbook for foods of the Middle East, you at least have these five Arab influenced recipes for Ramadan.

One feature where Ms. Solley really missed the boat was in her not including a bibliography of other books on soup recipes. The book ends with all her literary credits in place, but no citations of good books on Soup. So, only four stars for this omission and to alert potential buyers that this book is more about lore than about gourmet cooking.

              Book Description

Fads and fashions influenced the evolution of phonograph design in twentieth-century America, creating a vivid visual cavalcade. This beautiful volume is full of gleaming metal, glistening wood, pastel plastic, glowing dials, and fashionable fabrics. This is a story of developing style that stretches from the Victrola in the early 1900s to Quadraphonic sound of the 1970s. Yet the history of phonograph design is not just about eye-catching cabinetry, it is also the saga of our parents and grandparents, and the way they saw the world in which they lived. Through 340 color illustrations and detailed captions the development of phonograph design and sound reproduction is engagingly explored. All who are interested in phonograph collecting, design, art, music and twentieth-century social history will be fascinated by this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on early phonographs.......2006-02-26

The book Phonographs With Flair came out a few years ago, and it's one of the better books on the subject. The photos are excellent and it covers many different models from 1890s thru the 1970s. Included are many photos of very oddball models, many of which are probably near extinction today.

If you have any interest at all in music, record collecting or icons of the 20th century, this book is an excellent choice.

              Book Description

The Garden Writers Association of America awarded Garden Stone a 2003 Garden Globe Award of Achievement for Writing. The Washington Post wrote, "Garden Stone is one of the best idea books on using stones in the landscape that I have seen." And Country Living Gardener said, "While the book is visually stunning . . . diagrams and step-by-step instructions show how gardeners can make their dreams come true."

Garden Stone capitalizes on a hot trend in landscaping: adding stone to bring texture, color, serenity, and strength to the garden. Author Barbara Pleasant offers gardeners more than 40 enchanting designs--from something as simple as a flagstone path to an elaborate Zen-inspired meditation garden. But this is not just a picture book. Each project is packed with practical, down-to-earth installation advice, including clear line-drawings and instructional diagrams. Furthermore, an up-to-date resource list helps do-it-yourselfers find the tools and materials they need.

Pleasant helps gardeners decide which type of stone is best for which kind of design. Limestone, for example, is ideal for stacking to make rock walls. Sandstone is easy to cut for steps and adds warm shades of red, yellow, or chocolate brown to the landscape. Blocks of granite can be used as sturdy paving stones. And an upright piece of marble or basalt adds a decorative touch to any garden.

Pleasant also shows how to create stone water features, such as fountains and natural-looking ponds and streams. And, making this valuable as a gardening book as well as a stone projects book, she provides hundreds of detailed suggestions for plants whose color, texture, and shape will enhance the stone--whether growing in rock gardens, bordering paths and steps, or meandering along water elements. Both practical and inspirational, Garden Stone shows any gardener how stone can add enduring beauty to any landscape.

3 out of 5 stars Many Beautiful Pictures.......2007-06-15

I loved looking at the pictures in this book and there was some information about types of rock which was interesting and well-wriiten. However, a lot of the book's ideas centered around rocks in combination with water features; very pretty but useless for those without water in their gardens. That also seemed a tad presumtuous considering the title. Maybe it should be called "Landscaping with plants ,stone and water features".

              4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-01-05

Many options and suggestions for stone work. I thought the book illustirations were beautiful and the material well presented. Helpful book for the garden library.

4 out of 5 stars Garden Stone Review.......2005-01-22

I realize that there are already several books about using stones in the garden and they all contain similar information, but this book is still worth a read if you plan to use stone in your garden. It is full of photographs that show ways to use rock in the garden. In fact, several of these photos are the inspiration for two new projects I started in my own garden.

The first section of this book discusses the history of stone in gardens and talks about the types of stone. I enjoyed reading the history, but quickly moved on to the meat of the book. The next chapter discussed pathways and included patterns, stone recommendations and how to's. I found this section particularly helpful, since I was in the process of laying a path when I started to read the book. Many of the tips are common sense after you complete projects, but who wants to find out how to do things the hard way? The following sections of the book deal with making steps, drainage problems, retaining walls, walls in general, stone in water gardens and rock gardens. All of the sections are well written and have many tips and instructions to help you complete your projects.

Something I really enjoyed about this book is the fact that each section had a list of plants that grow well in that environment. For example, there is a special section on plants for crevices and one on plants for steps. I also enjoyed reading some of the general information. There are sidebars such as "12 Ways to Move Stone" and "Cutting Stone" included in the book. If you've ever tried to move a large rock, you know how important it is to know how to move stones.

Even though there are several other good books on stonescaping, this book is well written, well organized, and will find a permanent home on my reference shelf.

                      Book Description

A young black nondescript bellhop in a White segregated hotel witnessed a humiliating scene against another black bellhop by a drunken White boss. The young black bellhop decided to take revenge by secretly urinating in the White boss man's water pitcher. Later, while the young black bellhop watched television, he saw the beginning of the Civil Rights Struggle led by a little known black Preacher in Alabama. The young black bellhop became frustrated but also imbued by this quest of his people to become free. His sordid and vengeful act against the White boss then seemed futile. The only White man that this lad trusted was a liberal lawyer and nonconformist in White society. A deep mentor like friendship was made between these two men and later the X young black bellhop became a war hero and an outstanding citizen. However success had its price for the X bellhop. It came in the form of an association with the communist party and from a young spoiled black debutante. This young lady had shunned the X bellhop in her past but now desired him as a lover. To this end she deviated into muckraking about the X bellhops' illegitimate birth and discovered that he is the son of an insane streetwalker. However the story takes a bizarre twist when it is revealed that the spoiled young debutante is actually the sister of the X bellhop. Her own pompous father had sired the young X bellhop by an affair with the insane streetwalker.

                          Description:
Individual EU member countries, such as Denmark and Germany, may have a rational economic interest in creating comparative advantages for renewable energy sources in order to capitalise on their first-mover advantages in these industries. We demonstrate that different means of implementing the Kyoto Agreement affect the potential to market new renewable technologies, e.g. wind turbines, to other countries subsequent to their ratification of the Kyoto target levels. This article shows that a transnationally grandfathered Tradable Permit System (TPS) renders the shadow price of emissions reductions lower in the high-cost reduction countries. Export opportunities to these countries will consequently be reduced under a transnational TPS, e.g. from the EU to the US. This could also serve to explain EU opposition to a fully flexible TPS in The Hague in 2001. Instead, the latest EU proposal delivered in Johannesburg pushed for setting a target of 15% of all energy to come from sources of renewable energy, e.g. wind turbines, solar panels, biomass and waves, by 2015. Such initiative would further EU industrial interests globally. Future research should, however, attempt to provide more empirical evidence concerning this proposition and its importance compared to other concerns.

                                  Product Description

Wendover USA has a unique, fasinating past. The first transcontinental telephone line was linked as Wendover in 1914. Ab Jenkins' Mormon Meteor began a series of land speed records set on the Bonneville Salt Flats. World War II bombers shook the ground as they roared above Wendover Bombing and Gunnery Range on their practice runs. The 509th and the Enola Gay made secret preparations for the war-ending atomic bomb mission to Japan. The desert crossings in the 1840's of the Donner-Reed party adds further historic intrigue to the history. Will modern history answer the question: Is the Nevada state line to be shifted east to incorporate two divided towns into one Silver State community?

3 out of 5 stars Not a Detail Left Out........2007-01-15

I read Wendover: Winds of Change in preparation for a 4-day trip. Bateman did extensive research for the book and it shows - there wasn't a detail left out. In fact it was bizarre how much was included in the book.

For example, I found it interesting the role the first transcontinental telegraph played in attracting attention to this otherwise desolate area. Bateman gave equal weight to the minutes of the organizing meeting for the Mormon Women's Relief Society.

I thought it was amazing how the first and only atomic bombs used against population centers were developed and loaded onto their respective airplanes in Wendover. I thought it was boring learning every duty assignment for every air squadron trained at the field for the entire duration of World War II.

Highlighting the most memorable or impactful land speed records set on the Bonneville Salt Flats would have been valuable. A complete chronology of every vehicle and driver to ever set or attempt to set those records, giving exactly equal weight to all just reads like a filing with the county commissioner.

There isn't anything left out, including a recent list of residents taken right from the phone book. (without phone numbers).

If you read this, study it, and then walk around Wendover, you could blend in like a local already in on the latest gossip and politics.

Too much. I won't give it lower than 3 stars because it is a specialty book and there are perhaps some people who really want that kind of detail in a book.
