In the second MacLaren Yarbrough mystery, MacLaren finds herself trying to single-handedly solve two mysteries: Was it really Pastor Luke Blessed who killed gentle young Amanda Kent -- and who shot MacLaren's husband, Joe Riddley?
Customer Reviews:
Delightful characters, setting and situation!.......2007-07-22
I enjoyed this book very much, as I had already come to love Maclaren Yarborough from her later escapades. The characters are well-rounded, the plot beautifully executed, and the setting, Hopemore, Georgia, is a place I never want to leave. I wonder, though, if I would have enjoyed this one as much had I read it first. ("Why Shoot the Magistrate?" is Maclaren Yarbrough's debut story.) The reason for my hesitation is that this book is a bit heavy on the "preachy" kind of religion. Overall, I love Mac's philosophy, her connection with God, her staunch morality. But in this book, and the next (When Did We Lose Harriet?) the reader is made to feel that unless you believe exactly what Mac does, you are sadly misled, spiritually. Happily, every book in this series from the third one on is light on the religion angle and heavy on just basic common sense and common decency - and excellent plotting. Don't pass this one by, even if you have no religious beliefs at all, because overall the book is a winner!
Satisifying Read.......2003-12-29
All of the MacLaren Yarbrough books are engaging mysteries and easy reads---the kind of book that is best enjoyed on a rainy day with hot chocolate. What Sprinkle does with clues is interesting, especially in this MadLaren book.
Definitely worth my money and my time........1999-06-02
I bought this book because the cover had a sticker that said if I did not love it, I could return it and get my money back with no questions asked. I figured what did I have to lose? Patricia Sprinkle has since become one my favorite authors. Her Maclaren Yarbrough books are easy reads. I felt like I knew her characters personally and was already missing them as I read the last few pages. If you like Perry Mason, Ben Matlock, or Jessica Fletcher, you will love Maclaren Yarbrough.

and considering the number of cyberpunk comics out there, one might not think that's not much of an achievement but Alexander's writing and graphics manage to bring a fresh take on what could have been a load of moribund cliches.

Book Description
New research suggests that most back pain is caused by underdeveloped multifidus muscles, those that connect the spinal vertebrae and are crucial in bending the back. This book presents exercises to strengthen the multifidus group. Simple explanations and black-and-white drawings throughout show readers how to work with these muscles.
Customer Reviews:
very helpful.......2007-08-24
I have been doing the exercises for 2 months. My lower back pain has not completely gone away, but has been greatly reduced. Best $10 I have spent in a long time...
Info my physical therapist did not give me!.......2007-07-19
I've been struggling with lower back problems for almost a year. Had an MRI that showed a bulging disc, but my symptoms didn't match that location. Had physical therapy (most of it made me worse), finally had a steriod injection that decreased the inflammation and eliminated the pain (although it is supposed to be temporary). No one (Doctor or therapists) seemed all that interested in helping me determine what to do to prevent a recurrence. I purchased several books -- this one was very helpful (although his focus is on just this one muscle) and I do believe the exercises are strengthing my back. Also helpful was one of the Robin McKenzie books. By combining these two approaches, I think I'm well on my way to preventing another painful flare-up.
I found his explanations of how the back works and his discussion of the research (upon which he bases his approach) to be enlightening.
An excellent book, even with the strange title.......2007-05-28
Well it is a strange title. But if you are one of the 80% of Americans who suffer from back pain, this is a very worthwhile quick read. It's 120 pages and can be finished in 60 to 90 minutes. The Multifidus Back Pain Solution... is really more of a booklet then a book. It covers the basic physiology of the back, as well as common types of back problems and many of the treatments that are used. And then offers a simple program which has shown proven results.
The multifidus is a little-known set of muscles that connect the vertebrae. The thesis of author Jim Johnson, who is a physical therapist, is that strengthening these muscles will help many people who suffer from back pain to either (1) have less pain when they have episodes of back pain or (2) have fewer back pain episodes or (3) have a happy combination of (1) and (2). Johnson backs up his thesis based on research (that is ongoing) from quite a number of back pain studies.
As a person whose own back pain problems have been reduced dramatically in the last three plus years by using a nautilus back machine (that's designed to strengthen all the muscles running along the spinal vertabrae), I am sure Johnson is on to something.
The exercises Johnson suggests are simple to do, require no machines or weights (well, small ankle weights can be used), and take very little time. I am going to incorporate them into my own gym time, on days when I'm not using the nautilus back machine.
The author admits his program will not work for everyone, but it does help the majority of people in his own practice and in the scientific studies.
DEFINITELY worth the small investment of time and money to get and read this book if you have a back problem.
A surprising one-exercise program for back pain relief........2007-04-26
Jim Johnson stopped looking for causes of chronic back pain after researching the studies on the subject. Scientific studies don't support the common theories about what causes chronic back pain. Many people without pain live happily not knowing that they have back conditions usually treated with surgery.
Johnson also found that people with pain usually have weakened multifidus muscles. Those without pain usually don't. So, instead of looking for causes, Johnson recommends that patients initially work to strengthen their multifidus muscles. These muscles weave around your spine from your neck to your low back. Their location on your spine indicates their importance to your back health. Johnson describes three different exercises that target the multifidus. He lets the reader choose the one that they prefer to do.
Most physical therapists recommend multiple exercises for chronic back pain. That shotgun approach can be effective if followed. But patient compliance drops as programs get more complex. Johnson's program requires performing only one exercise. Yet most of his patients improve or completely relieve their chronic back pain without any other treatment.
Johnson says most patients notice improvements within two weeks. If you don't improve within three months, try something else. He also acknowledges that his program is for chronic back pain: continuous or intermittent pain lasting for months. For acute pain, time heals better than any exercise program.
The book illustrates the exercises he recommends. Here is a basic description of them:
Johnson most highly recommends the "bird-dog" or opposite arm/leg extension. Start in an all-fours position on the floor. Raise one leg straight back and hold it up for a second, then lower. Alternate with the other leg. Work up to 20 repetitions with each leg or about two minutes of repetitions. Every other day or three times a week is enough. When that movement becomes easy, go to the next level by extending the opposite arm straight out while extending each leg. When that becomes easy, the final level is to add light weights to each arm and leg, depending upon your tolerance. Once you build up your strength, perform the exercise once a week to maintain it. You will find this exercise in many exercise books and on many websites. Alas, don't be alarmed that they all prescribe different "hold" times, number of repetitions, and other adjustments. Johnson explains why the pattern he describes should work fine for you.
The second exercise is commonly known as the prone or facedown extension. Lie on your stomach. Lift one leg straight up about 6 inches and hold for a second. Lower and repeat with the other leg. Work up to the same frequency and number of repetitions as the first exercise. When the exercise becomes easy, add light weights. Do this exercise if you can't do the first one.
The third exercise can be done sitting or standing. While exhaling, simply pull your stomach muscles in as tight as you can and hold them for a few seconds. Work up to 20 repetitions. This can be done daily. This exercise is for those unable to do one of the other two exercises.
Jim Johnson writes short convincing books. He presents simple self-care solutions. Do you want to avoid surgery, prescription drugs, supplements, pricey equipment, and complicated workout routines? Then try Jim Johnson's books for what ails you. If you have knee problems, look up his knee book on Amazon. He also has a book on treating your rotator cuff. Creating good health can sometimes be surprisingly simple.
Pretty Good.......2007-03-12
So I've been doing the excercises as this book suggested and it's been great. I hardly ever get back pain anymore. My back pain is stiff lower back and I've also has disketomy done too. Ever since I did their suggested work out I truly have not had any incidents of back pain. I would've liked to see this book suggest more excercises. It gives out only a few excercises, however those excercises are very effective. The book also talks to much about studies, and other insignificant topics.

Customer Reviews:
This book was very helpful.......2002-07-24
I have read this book twice, and refer to it as needed. It certainly outlined the characteristics of the breed and all have proven to be true. If there is a downside to this book it is all the information about showing, since my Min Pin is a pet. But then even that provided some good information.
I liked the book and would buy it again.
Excellent for new owners or people thinking of buying one.......2002-02-04
I recommend anyone thinking of buying a min pin, read this book first. They are not just your average house dog, and this book tells you several things you should take into consideration. Although I purchased it after buying a min pin, it really helped me learn about their history, nature, showing qualifications, as well as other things.
An Excellent Reference On Min Pins.......2001-02-01
This is definitely not a cut and paste dog book. Most everything you could wish to know is included in this book...the history of the dog, it's personality traits, gait diagrams, obstacle track training (!), and famous past show dogs. Plenty of references for further reading, pictures, and some weblinks. The most impressive thing for me was the pain the author goes through to make sure you know what you're getting into purchasing a Min Pin. The breed is high maintenance and very high strung. A cherished pet, but comparable to a toddler who never grows up. It is an important fact. My Min Pin is a rescue from a family that merely felt the breed was 'cute.' This is an excellent book for those who already own, but should be required for those considering a first-time Min Pin.

Tracy DiSabato-Aust's Well-Designed Mixed Garden provides sound direction for plant lovers looking to free their garden from the doldrums and fashion a rich tapestry of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vines, grasses, and bulbs. Encyclopedic in scope yet unfailingly attentive to essential details, The Well-Designed Mixed Garden effectively summarizes an array of basic garden design considerations and fundamentals. There are particularly useful chapters on color theory and on drawing up a plan, with precise instructions on what size plants to purchase and how to space them. As with her highly regarded Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting & Pruning Techniques, DiSabato-Aust delves eagerly into plant maintenance, a topic too many garden writers overlook. Though many examples are from the author's own garden or other American Midwest locations, they're largely applicable to other plant hardiness zones. Of particular appeal are a nicely photographed section on attractive plant combinations and a series of handy appendixes for plant selection. Beginners may be overwhelmed by this book's wealth of information, but its comprehensiveness renders it all the more valuable for seasoned gardeners seeking greater practical know-how and a surer grasp of the art of gardening. --Jennifer Wyatt
Book Description
The Well-Designed Mixed Garden is a design book with a difference. Written for gardeners who are passionate about plants of all kinds (hence the "mixed garden" of the title), it reflects decades of professional experience and artistic innovation. As with her bestselling book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden, master designer and plantswoman Tracy DiSabato-Aust provides not only inspiration but also scrupulously organized information on design and connoisseur plants — all from original research dating back to her degree work in horticulture.
Her new offering is a master class of design fundamentals, with an emphasis on often-neglected topics, such as site evaluation, color theory, and planning for maintenance. It is also a gallery of detailed design plans that show how ideas are put onto paper and then translated into three dimensions. Lessons learned in its first two parts are strengthened in an "Encyclopedia of Plant Combinations"; each entry notes the design considerations at play and provides tips on how to keep the combination looking its best. And the lifetime care needs and unique design characteristics of featured plants are summarized in the useful charts and lists that conclude the book. The result is a nearly foolproof guide to every aspect of designing superior gardens with superior plants. With more than 250 color photos and illustrations, this book is as much a feast for the eyes as it will be a trusted reference for the library shelf.
Customer Reviews:
A Flower Gardener's Companion.......2007-09-03
Comprehensive and very user friendly. A book every home flower gardner would want to have.
OK, but not as good as I thought it would be.......2007-05-16
I've heard other gardeners talk about Tracy's books and what an inspiration they are, so I bought "The Well-Designed Mixed Garden" expecting to learn some GREAT ideas for my gardens. It has some good information on principles of design and how to work with color, texture, and so on. But I was disappointed at how weak and uninspiring the section is on plant combinations. She calls it an "encyclopedia of plant combinations," and the section is full of photos of flowers and plants she thinks are winning combinations. The combinations mostly have no real visual appeal, the photos (in that section) are plain, and it's a wasted section of the book. I think there was only one of these combinations that actually looked beautiful. Most of these photos were from her own garden, and perhaps she let her personal affection for her own gardens cloud her judgment on what to include.
I like the rest of the book, however, and her examples of garden designs in other parts of the book have good photos and design layout drawings that are quite useful.
Useful no matter what your garden needs.......2007-05-13
This book is so helpful in figuring out how to mix flowers and plants in border-type gardens. It details color combinations and tells what flowers go well together. It provides pictures of various gardens in different season to provide an idea of how the landscape will look in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Very good information and easy to understand.......2007-02-05
This is the first book I would recomend to anyone! Ms. Disabato-Aust compiles a vast amount of quality information in one book, and she explains abstract concepts in a way that regular people who aren't master gardeners can understand. She also includes insights from her vast experience; it's not a dry recitation seen in other sources. She explains when and why to break the generally-accepted guidelines.
I've been a hard-core gardener for about three years, and I've already gleaned some of the information from other sources. But I had to read a lot of different books and articles to get it, and it was often contradictory. The book not only ties it all together in a cohesive manner, but gives very detailed examples.
I particularly enjoyed the section on combinations, where Ms. Disabato-Aust explains why certain things work together in a converational tone. Far from being a preening dilletante, the author's manner is friendly and warm.
I only had two complaints, and they are possibly unique to me. As you might expect, the "example" gardens shown used Ms. Disabato-Aust's style of gardening. It's wonderful, but I have a different style, and would have appreciated seeing the gardening principles illustrated using different styles. Second, I garden in North Florida. A fair number of the plants that look so beautiful in her Ohio garden wouldn't make it in North Florida.
Destined to be a classic garden reference........2006-03-24
I'm a master gardener from Illinois, and have heard Tracy Disabato-Aust on a number of occasions. Her book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden has long been our bible for perennials. In this new book, she makes accessible for all gardeners the depth of her experience and research in incorporating many kinds of plants in a mixed border. The book is worth buying for the appendices alone: plants by design and maintenance characteristics as well as common/scientific name cross-references. A must-have garden reference book!

Book Description
In Fire, Snow and Honey freedom fighters, mothers, musicians, doctors, teachers, soldiers and scholars, aged between 23 and 103, reexamine the past and present from a Kurdish perspective. By lifting many veils of secrecy, they reveal the origins of monotheism and of civilization itself, as well as an ethnic persecution, which has killed about half a million Kurds in four decades. At the front line of global forces, the Kurdish predicament is shown to be intimately interwoven with international events, such as the Iraq-Iran War and the Kuwait War. On the home front, Kurdish women expose their often confronting experiences, emerging as shining examples of an ancient culture that honors loyalty, bravery and hospitality, music and poetry, but which has been torn apart by massacres, deportations, imprisonments and politics, resulting in a steady stream of refugees to the West.
Madame Danielle Mitterrand in her foreword writes:
"It is no longer acceptable. . . to close our eyes to the massive violations of the rights of Kurds. . . Finding a political and peaceful solution to the Kurdish problem is now necessary more than ever. We have a large population with a very high birth rate, living in an area which has the largest reserves of water in the Middle East. The Kurdish problem, outstripping its regional framework, has become a European, indeed a global problem, best dealt with by the international community.
Tackling all aspects of Kurdish life, Fire, Snow and Honey acts as a living witness to the Kurdish people in the millennium: of their past, but also their present, so the future can take note."
Customer Reviews:
Fire, Snow and Honey: Voices from Kurdistan.......2006-03-08
After Arabs, Turks, and Persians, Kurds are the fourth largest ethnic group of the Middle East. As events such as the constitutional struggle in Iraq, ethnic riots in Syria and Iran, and arguments over terrorist amnesty in Turkey have shown, Kurdish politics stand front and center in 2004.
Lennox, an Australian radio reporter, seeks to illustrate the Kurds' plight by gathering life stories, poetry, and folk tales from the Kurdish exile community in Australia. Her compilation has four sections. The first offers essays on everything from the origin of the Kurds to their religions, literature, music, cuisine, and politics. The other three sections are defined by the geographical origin of their contributors: northern Iraq; northwest Iran; and all of eastern Turkey, northern Syria, and the Caucasus.
The explanatory essays are detailed and accessible but not always reliable. Hussein Tahiri traces the Kurds back to biblical Noah, and the term "Kurd" to the third century Sassanian Empire. Abdulkader Maronesy asks whether the Yezidis' pre-Islamic Kurdish religions were the first monotheisms. Other authors extend twentieth-century Kurdish nationalism retroactively backward to the dawn of history.
The political essays can be downright wacky. In a rambling introductory essay, Lennox rants against the "ecologically unsustainable and inequitable world" and the "New World Order." She uncritically accepts propaganda of the Kurdish-Turkish PKK terrorist group in asserting that "The Kurds in Turkey have been denied and oppressed more than any other Kurds," a curious statement given Iraq's ethnic cleansing campaign and use of chemical weapons against the Kurds. A Baghdadi Kurd presented only as "Dr. Azad" asserts that Baath Party founder Michel Aflaq was an agent of the Mossad and that Saddam Hussein received CIA and Mossad training prior to the 1968 coup that brought the Baath Party to power. This author also claims that the Pentagon trapped Saddam into invading Kuwait in 1989.
The wooly stuff continues. Eziz Bawermend suggests that Kurds should engage in more terrorism to gain Western support (perhaps providing an unwitting lesson into the failures of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East). "If a Kurdish organization or splinter group resembling Palestinian Hamas should develop, and was ready to commit acts of violence dwarfing the atrocities allegedly committed by PKK, the West would be more likely to consider its position on PKK. Hamas has made the PLO look far more reasonable than the PLO could ever portray itself to be."
Fire, Snow, & Honey will interest social historians anxious to gain insight into the lives of ordinary people. However, its lack of annotation and the weakness of its essays do not do the Kurds justice. A far better introduction to Kurdish life, history, and society is Susan Meiselas's Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History,[1] a coffee table book illustrating Kurdish society through historical photos, maps, letters, newspapers, with brief, clear, and professional annotations.
