Book Description

"If you are reading this, then I am gone and this manuscript, per my instruction, has been delivered to the writer Chelsea Cain for publication as she sees fit..."

America's favorite girl detective is back to set the record straight. According to our titian-haired heroine, she was not a fictional character, but an intrepid real-life sleuth who investigated some of the twentieth century's biggest mysteries. And the famous series she starred in was not cooked up by a team of writers, but plagiarized from her exploits by a nosy college roommate-who, not surprisingly, got a whole lot wrong.

Here are the daring escapes, brilliant hunches, and dependable stock characters, including interlopers from numerous other beloved series, that have delighted generations of fans. And here, also, are the details of teen-sleuth life that you never saw: the secret romances, reckless driving, minor drinking problems, political action, and domestic drama that have, up till now, remained hidden from these brave detectives' adoring public.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Flashback.......2007-09-18

The cover of this novel let's you know right off the bat that this is not a piece of literature that should be analyzed or seriously critiqued. The young girl laying suggestively and the words "parody" are important hints. Chelsea Cain provides a "new" perspective on several classic mysteries, but this time through Nancy's first person voice, instead of Carolyn Keen's third person narrative. Readers learn the "truths" behind her relationships with Ned Nickerson and Frank Hardy, discover Keen's supposed motive to publish falsities and even learn what happens to Nancy during middle age and later years.

This book is a fun read that is even a bit shocking at times- Nancy wasn't as naive as we thought she was! I recommend it for more mature readers who are familiar with the original stories and want to take a quick, entertaining trip down memory lane.

2 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Teen Sleuth.......2007-09-10

This book is silly and formulaic. It sounded as if it would be funny and interesting, but it isn't very good. I didn't finish it.

3 out of 5 stars Sleuthing is not what it used to be!.......2007-08-19

Chelsea Cain's parody of Nancy Drew and all the teen sleuths of that genre is hilarious, for about three chapters. It is good fun and over the top. But with that said, three chapters is quite enough, as mentioned in some of the other reviews, it does get tiresome and boring. Particularly funny is Nancy's relationship dilemas with her "true love" Frank Hardy, and her "special friend" Ned Nickerson. Her rivalry with Cherry Ames, student nurse is hysterical. But sadly, how many times can we milk the jokes? Good parody, a good chuckle but a bit long.

5 out of 5 stars Nancy Drew Through the Ages.......2007-08-17

Charm and parody are ingredients too seldom found together. Chelsea Cain has combined them seamlessly in Confessions of a Teen Sleuth, a tribute to Nancy Drew, series fiction, their heroes, and even the readers of their adventures.
Confessions of a Teen Sleuth takes as its conceit that Nancy Drew was a authentic person, one-time college roommate of Carolyn Keene, who stole the concept of her friend's life as the basis for her own series of books. In Cain's book, Nancy traces her own saga through a series of vignettes from 1926 to 1992. She interacts with other characters ranging from the fellow offspring of the Stratemeyer syndicate, such as the Hardy Boys to Tom Swrift, to Cherry Ames and Encyclopedia Brown.
Unlike the Keene novels, in which Nancy ages little across the decades, this "real" Nancy Drew does age, and Confessions of a Teen Sleuth ends with the octogenarian about to begin her greatest case. She is doing so in the arms of her true romantic love, the man who was not her husband but was the father of her son. (I shall remain silent on his name, since he is the star of another series, but suffice to say that in Bayport, Callie Shaw's wishes went unfulfilled.) Nancy has married Ned Nickerson and their union parallels the changing role of women in American society beyond the bounds of matrimony. (Much the same occurs for Nancy's friends Bess and George.) While this might seem an exploitive betrayal of the idyllic foundation of the Nancy Drew series, instead it is the heart of Cain's story, what gives Confessions of a Teen Sleuth vibrance and sentiment, a romantic maturity. Although Nancy's marriage to Ned ultimately fails, she realizes that they are destined to be together as special friends. Even after their divorce they remain inseparable, and it is in these later years that Nancy comes to really love the man she had so often rescued and had seemed her inferior in youth.
Confessions of a Teen Sleuth is an ideal accompaniment to Benjamin Hoff's 2002 novel, The House on the Point. Both demonstrate the richness of the mythology of the Stratemeyer creations, especially Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, developed initially by Mirdred Wirt Benson and Leslie MacFarlane, respectively--for, make no mistake, Confessions of a Teen Sleuth is a crossover novel, of importance to the Hardy Boys enthusiast. Cain uses primarily parody, and Hoff pastiche, in creating an adult mystery. However, in lightly poking fun at, and demonstrating the adult potential in the stories, both writers have revealed the depth of characterization and situation that have made Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys a literary phenomenon for nearly 80 years. Generations of readers worldwide, shaped by profoundly different historical moments, would not have continued turning to his series (and their respective supporting characters) without a sturdy original premise-a fact underlined by both Hoff and Cain in The House on the Point and Confessions of a Teen Sleuth.
Cain knows better than to belittle Nancy or the Hardys, and despite the changes she rings on the formula, presentation, and character, they emerge stronger than ever, as icons of American youth, innocence, and maturity. Cain simply allows Nancy to grow up, as a woman, a wife, mother, and grandmother, but a sleuth first and always. Nancy remains, like Sherlock Holmes, a figure unchanging even amidst chaotic eras and fashions (like the 1970s) which sometimes seem ridiculous in retrospect. Nancy, however, never loses her dignity, even if the times do.
Only readers who took this novel too literally would fail to appreciate it; consequently it is best for late teens and up. Despite an adult cynicism and world weariness, there is also an overriding reverence for the Drew and Hardy novels of our collective childhood, and the abilities their heroism embodied. The illustrations of Lia Miternique are ideal, evoking perfectly the style accompanying the 1960s and 1970s rewrites of the Hardy and Drew series issued by Grosset & Dunlap. Confessions of a Teen Sleuth is a book that will be enjoyed by anyone who loved series fiction in their youth, and will enjoy reliving fond memories with a touch of humor.

I was excited when I heard about this book on NPR. I was, however, disappointed when I got the chance to read it. I don't know what I expected but I thought it got very repetitive and a bit boring (i guess that is how the author felt about the originals).

Download Description

Kai Lung is an itinerant story-teller in ancient China. "I spread my mat," he says, "wherever my uplifted voice can entice together a company to listen," and his powers of enchantment are abundantly revealed in this volume. He incurs the enmity of a sinister figure called Ming-shu, who is the confidential agent of the Mandarin, Shan Tien, and has to defend himself in the Mandarin's court against a series of treasonable charges. Kai Lung's defence takes the original form of inducing the Mandarin to listen to a recital of the traditional tales of China, and so well does he beguile the capricious tyrant that he secures one adjournment after the other and, finally, his freedom--as well as the love of the maiden Hwa-Mei. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2004-11-05

During a time of conflict and upheavel, a wandering story teller is arrested by a perfidious bureaucrat for the crime of appearing suspicious and being in the wrong place at the wrong time (and possible violations of the Patriot Act). Imprisoned, Kai Lung does not languish. Although his enemy has the ear of the local mandarin, Kai Lung is aided by a beautiful woman who possesses the mandarin's other ear. In the tradition of "The Arabian Nights" our hero intrigues the mandarin's interest, spinning tales by turn ironic, poignant and pointed. With each tale told, the sympathy of the mandarin, the frustration of the bureaucrat and the love between Kai Lung and his ally grow accordingly and Kai Lung survives another day.

This story is set in the China of long ago and related through the filter of an early twentieth century english writer. The courtly, overly flowery language is deliciously funny and displays a sly satiricism which reminds me of "Gulliver's Travels". A truly timeless gem which may be read on different levels by different ages.

Will Kai Lung survive? Yes, but you really should see how...

4 out of 5 stars You are too unworthy to read this most excellent book.......2002-07-26

I tried to write my comments on Ernest Bramagh's Kai Lung's Golden Hours, which I just finished, in the same style:

In the opinion of this lowly reader, the esteemed author before our unworthy eyes has created a gem of the highest quality, polished by fine craft.

But you can only do this so long before you get frustrated, which is why you have to admire Bramagh, because he could maintain this oblique and ornate style throughout and still manage to tell a compelling and, more than often, extremely humorous story.

The titular character, Kai Lung, is a storyteller who runs afoul of the local authorities, in particular a rather nasty advisor. The problem is that Kai has set his eyes on a most beautiful young woman who is also highly desired by the advisor, and the mandarin in charge is quite corrupt. The one saving grace for Kai Lung is that the mandarin also likes a good story. Like Scherazade, Kai Lung is therefore in the positive of entertaining for his life, and that he is able to accomplish this is not due to the fragment of 1001 stories available to him, but also the help of his beloved (a fairly strong female character given the situation and the date this was written, 1922).

Not everyone will care for this book, because a style as circular and dense as this doesn't lead itself to the short-attention-span-generation (only James Branch Cabell has a more elaborate, yet beautiful, prose form in fantasy). I don't know what it was about the 1920s that enabled the creation of such great comedy (Bramagh, Cabell, P.G. Wodehouse [who first became popular as a novelist in the 1920s], Thorne Smith). Maybe it was the post-War jubiliation, the underground of prohibition, or the pre-Depression stockmarket? Not ours to wonder why, but just to enjoy and laugh.

4 out of 5 stars The kind of good reading that mass media displaced.......2000-03-26

If you're here for the first time, then you have my sympathy on learning that this book is out of print. It's time for a re-issue--are you listening, Penguin Classics?

These stories are about a wandering storyteller, who gets into various jams and escapes with the aid of his silver tongue and an admiring coquette. For someone who apparently never visited China, and never even met that many Chinese, the verisimilitude Bramah achieves is amazing. This is an English child's storybook China, yet the stories themselves richly delight adults, too. The scene-setting is wonderful, but the real gem is the dialogue. Suave, sly, elliptically ceremonious, mock-abnegating--but you really have to read it to catch the flavor. Hillaire Belloc's introduction is on the money about how deceptively easy this style looks, and it is a great pity that more people do not have the opportunity to enjoy this and the other Kai Lung works today.

May your sleeves be filled with a sufficiency of taels, and may hungry and homeless ghosts find solace at your house-pole, and preserve your family tablets from the mischiefs of the lesser orders of the beings of the Upper Air...

5 out of 5 stars There's just one thing to say...........2000-03-05

The earlier reviewers of this book have said everything there is to say (and much better than I could have said it). I am the lucky possessor of a collected volume of all the Kai Lung stories. After having read Kai Lung's golden hours and the other books in the series, there was just one thing felt : a sense of profound sadness that there isn't more of Kai Lung to read!

I am adding this in 2003. I was wrong in writing that I have the entire collection of Kai Lung books. I learnt subsequently that there are a few missed out from my collection. For the records here is the complete list of the published Kai Lung stories :

The Wallet of Kai Lung
Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat
Kai Lung's Golden Hours
The Moon of Much Gladness (novel)
Kai Lung Beneath the Mulberry Tree
Kai Lung: Six

The last apparently contains six Kai Lung stories previously published ONLY in Punch magazine; the print edition for this book ran into a mere 250 copies and was published by Tacoma: The Non-Profit Press, 1974.

I have only the following :

The Wallet of Kai Lung
Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat
Kai Lung's Golden Hours
Kai Lung Beneath the Mulberry Tree

Kai Lung: Six, unfortunately was published in a very limited number of copies and I am unable to acquire one at an affordable price. The Moon of Much Gladness I hope to get soon.

My thanks to one of the persons who read this review and through his queries alerted me to the fact that - as I discovered later -my Kai Lung collection was not complete.

Magnolia Grill, Ben and Karen Barker's Durham, North Carolina, restaurant, is among the country's best places to dine. The couple--he's the chef, she's in charge of pastry--now offer Not Afraid of Flavor, a collection of their spirited, Southern-influenced recipes, plus culinary wisdom all cooks can use. Dishes like Celery-Fennel Chowder with Oysters and Bacon, Crab Cakes with Sauce Diablo and Corn Relish Salads, and Pan-Fried Pork Chops on Creamy Shrimp Hominy are representative of the book's deeply savory fare, conveyed in easy-to-follow recipes. Though many of these require multiple preparations, it's smooth sailing once ingredients are organized and procedures understood. Readers who enjoy a kitchen workout in the service of great eating and others interested in top-of-the-line American cooking should embrace the book.

Emphasizing their devotion to the freshest ingredients and encouraging readers to be similarly choosy, the authors then offer over 125 recipes in chapters like "Tar Heel Tapas," "Dixie Delights," and "A Few Cocktails" through sections on soups, entrées, breads, and desserts. Outstanding among the sweets are Double Chocolate Waffles with Strawberries and White Chocolate Ice Cream, the Chef's Favorite Lemon Tart, and Ginger-Lime Crème Caramels with Tropical Ambrosia. Bakers will also want to try Buttermilk Bread and a definitive recipe for flaky Angel Biscuits. Illustrated with color photos throughout, and with a helpful section on pantry basics, the book represents an American culinary journey that home cooks can now share. --Arthur Boehm

                    Book Description

Since opening their Durham, North Carolina, restaurant in 1986, chefs Ben and Karen Barker have been hailed as rising stars of the American culinary scene. Their award-winning Magnolia Grill has been featured in publications such as Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, the New York Times, and Southern Living. With a menu that changes daily and draws inspiration from fresh, often locally produced ingredients, the restaurant is the ultimate showcase for the bold, imaginative cuisine that embodies the Barkers' motto, Not Afraid of Flavor.

From spectacular soups to inventive updates of classic American desserts, this beautifully illustrated book features more than 125 exciting recipes from Magnolia Grill. While not strictly Southern, many of the dishes display a Southern sensibility--making creative use of regional ingredients or offering a new twist on a familiar favorite. Clear, detailed directions encourage readers to try such "fearless" creations as okra rellenos, spicy green tomato soup with crab and country ham, pan-roasted duck breast with sun-dried cherry conserve, striped bass with oyster stew, wild mushroom bread pudding, brown sugar pear poundcake, and Jack Daniels vanilla ice cream.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Southern Cuisine with Twist!.......2001-12-08

Having desired this cookbook for awhile, not disappointed in the least now that its in my collection.

This is rich book, with a rectangular format with big print and nice photos accompanying each recipe, which is given in adequate instructions and comments.

Knocked out by the variety and creativity of this recipe collection. They combine so many tastes and styles here --- Moraccan, Asian, Mexican, etc. Try these and you'll go bonkers as I--- Spicy Green Tomato Soup with Crab & Country Ham, Moraccan Roasted Eggplant Bisque with Grilled Chicken and Minted Yogurt, Roast Squab with Blackberry Essence & Carrot-Thyme Spaetzle, Pan Fried Mountain Rainbow Trout with Green Tomato and Lime Brown Butter Salsa on Sweet Potato, Artichoke and Crawfish Hash, or Grilled Sturgeon on Wild Rice Risotto with Butternuts, Grilled Leeks, and Cider Reduction.

Desserts are exceptional here, especially: Brown Sugar Pear Poundcake, and the Banana Pecan Crostata with Jack Daniels vanilla ice cream.

Super creative food, that takes some time and attention to prepare, but the results are worth it.

Recommended for the serious cook who likes this food which ventures to truly zap the diner with flavor, flavor, flavor. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars The Barkers are the Best!.......2001-02-11

I'm a recent transplant from New York and have been spoiled rotten by its hundreds of cutting-edge restaurants and innovative chefs. But I have to tell you, the Barkers and Magnolia Grill are right up there. As a rule, I find chef cookbooks beyond the capabilities of the average-- or even the advanced-- home cook. NOT AFRAID OF FLAVOR is the exception. Not only are its recipes inviting, they're approachable. Moreover the story of the Barkers and their Durham, NC restaurant is warm and appealing. Thanks to the Barkers (not to mention several other local chefs they've mentored), this red-clay country is no gastromic wasteland. Even my New York City friends are impressed. I've given NOT AFRAID OF FLAVOR to half a dozen of them and they're as impressed by the cookbook as they are by the cooking they sampled at Magnolia Grill. From a huge Barker fan.

5 out of 5 stars The restaurant's favorites adjusted for the home cook.......2001-01-28

The author run the Magnolia Grill restaurant in North Carolina and here provides a cookbook of their dishes and Southern culinary traditions. The restaurant's favorites have been adjusted for the home cook and include fine innovations ranging form Salmon Choucroute in Creamy Mustard Sauce to Roasted Duck Breast with Sun-Dried Cherry Conserve. Color photos pepper and finish the presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, aptly elegant........2001-01-09

Not Afraid Of Flavor: Recipes From Magnolia Grill showcases more than one hundred Southern dishes that are simply delicious and ingredient-driven. From Spicy Grilled Shrimp with Grits Cake, Country Ham & Redeye Vinaigrette, Gabriel's Favorite Crispy Parmesan Chicken with Lemon & Capers, and Molasses Mashed Sweet Potatoes, to Pickled Pepper Relish, Deep-Dish Apple Cinnamon Crisp with Brandied Vanilla Ice Cream, and Watermelon Ganita, Not Afraid Of Flavor is a beautifully illustrated, aptly elegant, and very welcome addition to any kitchen cookbook collection.

5 out of 5 stars A chef-written book for home cooks, not just a souvenir.......2000-11-29

I got this book because Magnolia Grill is a favorite restaurant. It's a gorgeous book with incredible photographs, but after seeing the authors of the Food Network the other night I am inspired to get it dirty in the kitchen. The recipes they cooked on the air were not terribly complicated and they looked yummy. I particularly like the Barkers' advice to break the rules and adapt the recipes to your own tastes and to what fresh ingredients are available.

This book had wonderful, glossy, high-quality pictures. There was so many pictures that information kind of fell second. If you are dying for some adorable pug shots, go with it. If you need some good information, this book has a good amount, but definitely try going with something else for maximum info.

Catalog of an exhibition showcasing selections of Qing dynasty Chinese glass from the collection of Ina and Sandford Gadient. Amassed over 25 years and consisting more than 200 pieces, their collection represents one of varied and remarkable private collections of Chinese glass. This catalog fully illustrates and examines 62 pieces, more than half of which date to the 18th century or earlier in the Qing dynasty and twelve of which bear a mark attributable with certainty to the Yongzheng or the Qianlong period. The objects include many fine vases, dishes, bowls, jars and covered jars, and figures of Guanyin. Highlights are a pear-shaped vase in opaque white glass with carved overlay of opaque red, with Qinglong mark and period; a pair of 18th-century lotus leaf-shaped dishes in opaque yellow glass; and an 18th-19th century figure of Guanyin in transparent brown glass swirled with opaque yellow-brown imitating amber.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs is the best of the bunch. It gives a bounty of information on each of the many herbs listed: origin, uses, cultivation, lore, and much more. The illustrations, both drawings and color photos, are superb. The book does contain errors; it says, for example, that sassafras extracts are carcinogenic. But on the whole this book excels.

I felt sad that this information Was actually in hands of over million people, yet I know that Creator of Nature and it's powers in herbs will prove to be otherwise than described in this "book".
There's some good info in it,almost as if you give enough good to trick the public in beliving the bad.
It is as if it was written by the FDA agents themself or Allopathic Medicine so called "Modern medicine".As if it was written to "label" herbs for not more than decorative.
Almost Every herb that is truly amazing is somehow at the end of these authors "descriptions" darkened, and when you KNOW and PRACTICE herbalisam you know that iS not truth, and also I find it little "sticky" that there's a so called "miracle" drug out there that is a better choice?
Man will never conquer the VERY CREATOR OF NATURE AND IT'S POWER,and no greed will ever rule over it! So KNOW that there's NO miracle drug out there,Nature with it's powers teaches us PATIENCE and that everything needs IT'S Time to Heal. Decide for yourself, please on this book. I pray that you enrich yourself with many books out there that HONOR MOTHER NATURE FOR ALL IT'S WORTH!PEACE BE WITH YOU!

No paperwork, order form, etc. The name did not match up with any order that I had placed.

                                          IT'S A SOUL THING

Lauryn Hill is the mighty force behind a hip-hop revolution. Her critically acclaimed solo debut album has sold millions of copies, earned her 5 Grammys, and placed her in the heart of the millennium's musical landscape.

The performer who is single-handedly rescripting the role of women in hip-hop is also one of the most intriguing people in music today. After singing her way through elementary school and junior high, she teamed up with buddies Wyclef and Pras to form the Fugees. Lauryn's searing vocals on the track "Killing Me Softly" became a defining sound of the '90s. But it is her poise, drive, and strength of character that propelled Lauryn to the top. HEART OF SOUL details her childhood and the family that shaped her, the life-changing experiences she had touring with the Fugees while still a teen, and the inspiring role her two children played in her skyrocketing solo career.

Lauryn Hill is a resounding success as a singer, an actress, and the voice of a generation. Now HEART OF SOUL takes you inside the dazzling world of this beautiful, amazing woman!

This book was very informative and surprisingly insightful. I followed Ms.Hill's career from her early years and was pleasantly surprised that a seemingly small book would contain such scope of well research info on my favorite performer. Well done, she definitely deserves all that hoopla!
