Missing persons or homicide?.......2006-11-19
To get totally caught up on the Savannah Reid series, I picked up Corpse Suzette by G. A. McKevett from the library the other day. And as per normal, the characters and story line didn't disappoint...
This installment centers around a luxury spa and a missing plastic surgeon. Savannah's partner, Tammy, won a contest for a complete makeover and surgery session for her cousin Abigail. Abby is quite overweight and bitter, and really wants no part of this. She grudgingly goes along with everything, but the big name plastic surgeon goes missing the day before the big event. The surgeon, Suzette Du Bois (and the source of the title pun), is nowhere to be found, and San Carmelita detective Dirk Coulter doesn't know if he's investigating a missing persons or a homicide case. Without the star surgeon, the spa is sure to go under, and everyone working at the spa looks like a potential suspect if Du Bois is indeed dead. Savannah has to balance her identity as a private detective and a (phony) reporter to get staff to talk with her, and each new revelation points to a different likely killer. But things really get complex when Du Bois' cheating husband, a very likely suspect, turns up dead himself. The missing Du Bois could now be a killer herself, and there's no telling where she might be and why she left...
This particular story had an ending I certainly didn't see coming. And I pretty much had to read it all the way through in order to find out "who dun it". The side story running through the whole novel is Abigail's outlook on her overweight body and how it's made her so negative. With Savannah's southern charm and common sense, she's able to break Abigail out of the mental outlook she's trapped in, and actually bring about some very positive changes (without undergoing the knife). That undercurrent is a little preachy at times, but it doesn't get in the way of a pretty good story. A quick read, and one that was good for a few hours of mindless escape...
Plot with a Twist.......2006-08-29
Savannah and friends are always delightful. This is another mystery taking place in a spa, but has a nice twist at the end.
A good summer (or anytime) read.
Review by Marja McGraw as it appeared in the Mohave Valley Daily News - 6/22/06.......2006-06-24
CORPSE SUZETTE by G.A. McKevett is the eleventh in the Savannah Reid Mystery series. One of the delights of this series is that you can read each book independently of the others and still understand the characters and situations.
Savannah, transplanted from Georgia, is a police officer turned private investigator in San Carmelita, California. Her wit and southern wisdom are a hit in this series.
Police detective and close friend Dirk Coulter and Savannah share information, stakeouts, food and adventures in this series, along with her vegetarian assistant, Tammy. Do you have the feeling that food is important in this series? It is, but it's not a story with recipes. Savannah and Dirk simply enjoy eating.
Voluptuous or a little overweight, depending on your point of view, Savannah likes herself and good food. She can't understand why women would diet and torture themselves with surgery to slim down. When Tammy invites her heavyset cousin for a visit after winning a makeover contest for her, Savannah's world takes a new turn. Tammy has asked Savannah to host Cousin Abigail at her home because Tammy doesn't have room.
Abigail is touchy about her weight situation and more than a little ornery. When Abigail suddenly decides to cooperate and claim her prize, everyone is suspicious of her motives; especially after Suzette Du Bois, the plastic surgeon at San Carmelita's new luxury spa, disappears.
Sure that Ms. Du Bois is dead, Savannah and Dirk take on the missing person case along with various employees at the spa, including Du Bois' ex-husband who swears she's hiding because she stole money from him. Then there's Myrna Cooper, receptionist at the spa, who has a permanent look of surprise on her face from too many anti-aging procedures. Include a snippy publicist and ambitious style consultant and you have quite an interesting group of suspects. And don't forget Abigail, who didn't really want the makeover in the first place.
When one of the suspects is murdered, things begin to escalate. Savannah would like nothing more than to solve the case and settle down with a friendly strawberry margarita and a snack. But business comes first.
Ms. McKevett creates a flock of interesting characters, and manages to create a Hitchcock"esque" ending as this case is resolved.
If you're looking for memorable characters, a fun and interesting story with a touch of humor, try Savannah Reid in CORPSE SUZETTE by G.A. McKevett. (Kensington Books, May, 2006, ISBN #0-7582-0462-0)
Savannah and crew are back.......2006-05-25
I just love the interaction between the characters in these books. Savannah ends up solving a mystery (or a couple of them) at a Spa. The mystery is light, but not to light, with lots of Southern charm. A big plus is that you don't have to read these books in order (imho), but once you have read one, you will have to read all of them. Highly recommended.
sparkling witty and exciting whodunit .......2006-05-07
San Carmelita private detective Savannah Reid is allowing her assistant's cousin Abigail to stay at her apartment while they both get a complete makeover at Emerge, a high class spa. Abigail is not easy to get along with because she hates her Junoesque body while Savannah who is also overweight is comfortable with hers. Abigail's' makeover is halted when one of the owners Suzette DuBois disappears baffling the police who are not sure a crime occurred and if one did was it a homicide.
Emerge's other owner, Suzette's former husband Sergio D'Allesandro, hires Savannah to find his ex wife because he insists she took one and a half million dollars form his bank account. After doing some investigating with her friend Police Detective Dirk, they find Sergio's body at Emerge. Toxicology affirms what Savannah suspected that he was murdered. She and the police seek the missing Suzette, who each feels is either the killer or the next victim.
G.A. McKevett writes a sparkling witty and exciting whodunit that is low on gore but big on clues so fans of cozies and armchair sleuths will fully appreciate. The heroine seems like a real person with her acceptance of who she is physically as a big athletic woman and her need for justice. Once again Savannah stars in a totally exciting mystery.

Book Description
Twenty years ago, on the streets of Castletown, Jack Staff fought Hurricane, the most destructive weapon ever developed by the British Army. It turned out to be his final battle. This volume reveals the full story behind that final fight and why Jack Staff walked away from his place as Britain's Greatest Hero, and what happened twenty years later when the Hurricane hits Castletown for a second time.
Customer Reviews:
Answers the one remaining question from the first book.......2004-11-14
The place to begin with Jack Staff is, of course, the first trade collection - EVERYTHING USED TO BE BLACK AND WHITE - a thorough, thrillingly overwhelming, introduction to Paul Grist's world of superheroes. The book repeatedly mentions that, twenty years ago, Jack Staff mysteriously retired. With the second trade collection, JACK STAFF: SOLDIERS, you finally learn the reason.
This book fits well with the first, as it contains many of the same characters, plus a few new ones. As in the first book, many of the new characters bear more than a passing resemblance to classic Marvel heroes, and that's no surprise, as Jack Staff was originally conceived as a story for Marvel's hero Union Jack. It's good that the art for this volume is in color, as you finally get to see the characters as they're meant to be seen. It's not so good that the page count is only about 1/3 that of the 1st trade, yet almost the same price. Another complaint is that the story frequently jumps between past and present, and it's not always made clear as to exactly where you are. This led to my having to re-read sections several times. So be aware that JACK STAFF: SOLDIERS, while entertaining, will not necessarily wrap you up for hours of reading, like the first volume; however, you may have to spend quite a bit of time figuring out the non-linear progression of the story.

Book Description
Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body introduces the key concepts of chi gung in a manner both accessible and understandable to Westerners. With fascinating insights gained from years of training in Asia as a warrior, healer, and priest, Bruce Frantzis demystifies the concept of "chi," the body's vital energy life force, and shows why this 3000-year-old system of self-healing works. The book provides a set of enjoyable, low impact exercises that readers can learn on their own, including standing chi gung, a core exercise that effectively boosts performance for martial artists, athletes, business people, and others. Body alignments and Taoist breathing, fundamentals that are the foundation of all Taoist energy practices, are also taught, with special alignments that benefit those who must sit for long periods of time. The book also reveals how chi gung can enhance other forms of exercise, from yoga and Pilates to golf and basketball.

Athletes, Martial Artists, Dancers, Movement Therapists take notice!.......2007-08-19
If your life revolves around movement you must learn what Bruce Frantzis writes about in this book. Studying and practicing the knowledge presented in this work will most definitely improve and enhance your ability "to move" and if necessary, rehabilitate your physical and energetic bodies. Outward movement begins inside and this book explains the how and why. I have been a practitioner of the internal arts for thirty years and know that if you haven't had exposure to Bruce's teachings, you are short-changing yourself. Study this book and be amazed!
Definitely one of the top books out there to start with .......2007-08-15
It seems that many reviewers consider this book, and Master Lam's "Way of Energy", to be two great starting points in learning Qigong, and specifically the various Zhang Zhuang forms of "still standing" or "standing like a tree". I have to say that I fully agree.
I was very, very impressed with the extent of BK Frantzis' writing in this book. He seemed to find the perfect balance of anecdotes, history of the form, explanations and diagrams of forms & postures, discussions of Qi, meridians...and especially what goes on internally during the standing process.
I had practiced Tai Chi and Kenpo karate when I was a kid, and thought I therefore had some idea of what to expect. Wrong! I was bowled over by how demanding these seemingly "simple" standing exercises were, both physically, but even moreso mentally. Being an experienced meditator in a variety of techniques, I found these postures were the perfect challenge for me: a way to make me take things I had learned on my own or through other traditions, and combine them with the way BK Frantzis offers. I knew the power the mind had to achieve internal peacefulness, help achieve goals, and improve general health...but I had absolutely no idea it could affect the physical body like it has using these postures.
Some positive effects after studying and practicing the Opening Gates and Lam's Way of Energy materials:
--Back pain and tightness about 75% lessened; feels like I've received a professional massage after each standing meditation.
--Hypertension and other symptoms of anxiety almost completely erased, especially an over-sweating problem I had for a long while.
--Better control over my breath; changing my entire breathing around, especially just normally when not doing exercises, from the belly/tantien/diaphram instead of from the chest was one of the best changes I've made in my life.
--More self confidence, energy and positive emotions then I've had in years.
--Peace of mind easier to attain.
--My other meditation practices have deepened to huge extents after applying some of Frantzis' Zhang Zhuang/Qigong techniques of visualization and control of Chi energy to my earlier practice.
--Better sense and awareness of my own body, particularly aches, muscles, pains, and especially stress...and how to go about making them feel better.
--No need to drink caffeine to wake me up in the morning anymore...Qigong does the trick!
I'm also impressed with the depth of Frantzis' writing; he supplies numerous anecdotes, pictures, diagrams, and extremely detailed explanations for every possible thing you could want to know about beginning this practice. All in all, this combined with Lam's book are two of the best books that I've ever brought into my life. No dollar amount can be put on both the physical relief and internal peace of mind I've experienced since working with these exercises. Fabulous book, highly recommended.
Engaging material, but the method did not work for me. .......2007-04-29
To his credit, the author writes very well about his experiences with chi kung, martial arts, and healing; and the method and motivation behind each exercise are detailed and thorough. But I tried his exercises diligently every day for well over a year (supplemented with a VHS of the same material demonstrated and taught by Frantzis), with no appreciable benefit in stress reduction, health promotion or chi development. I came to the conclusion that Frantzis might talk a good fight, but I needed a different approach to reach my goals for fitness, health and vitality.
Fortunately, Stewart Alve Olson's Tai Chi Chi Kung method, which I learned from Olson himself, turned out to be exactly what I needed at the time, and later experiences with Flying Phoenix and 18 Buddha Hands helped me even more. So you can count me as a believer in the efficacy of chi kung, but I think you need to learn this stuff directly from the teacher at some point in order to truly benefit, and in any case, there are better methods and teachers out there.
I am sure that many people will find the book (and Frantzis' other materials) of great benefit; it's also possible that live instruction from the man himself would make the material more effective; but it just wasn't right for my needs.
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-06
I have several books on Chi Gung and this book compliments the rest. There is always more to learn and I did. The author writes beautifully and with enthusiasm. My Brother is a doctor of Chinese medicine, acupunture and also teachers Chi Gung and Tai Chi. I sent a copy to Shanghai for him to read, he said it is a great addition to his library.
Still the best book on qigong (neigong) around.......2006-05-21
Most people will not have the discipline and patience to work through this workbook on qigong, but for those who do, this is absolutely the finest presentation around. Even more advanced practioners will want to refer to this fundamental book again and again.
This book works through the physical alignments and beginning standing-dissolving practice as foundation for all advanced work in healing, martial, and meditative qigong/neigong.
The old edition was excellent, but the new revised edition is even better, adding a step-by-step chapter on Taoist breathing which is a very welcome addition, and one which is a stand-alone practice in its own right.

Completely incomplete.......2005-01-16
It's amazing how 195 pages can contain information about all wild foods (of North America?) complete with descriptions and from field identification to its uses to the kitchen. Makes no mention of ethical harvesting (photos of ginseng and her stories of the market price of ginseng actually work against the spirit of wild foods) nor warnings of poisonous lookalikes (rendering the book dangerous). Never to be bought or caught holding a copy, so please be discreet if you want to find out for yourself in a library or bookstore.

From the authoritative author on reptile and amphibian care comes this revised and updated version of The Leopard Gecko Manual. Philippe de Vosjoli provides the essential information for selecting leopard geckos, designing vivaria, and general care, including feeding and breeding. He even includes other gecko species and compatible reptiles and amphibians.
Customer Reviews:
Good recent information on the Leopard Gecko.......2007-01-20
The leopard gecko is a fascinating little animal. We've immensely enjoyed "B.J." in our home, and this book has lots of good information on all aspects of providing the proper environment, healthcare, and diet for your pet. Pay special information to the information on longevity, though. Unlike other reptiles such as the anole, leopard geckos have long life spans. The longest lived male in captivity is 29 and the longest lived female is 21. Females, in general, live considerably shorter life spans than males, but they still have typical lifespans longer than that of the domesticated cat. Many people buy a leopard gecko for their child expecting that the reptile will live only two or three years, then get rid of the animal when they realize their error and the length of the commitment involved.
As for the details of the book, it thoroughly explains sexing and selection of a good specimen for those who have not purchased a gecko yet. The section on housing your gecko shows you how to construct a naturalistic vivarium. If you are interested in breeding geckos, there is information on that subject plus the research of Dr. Brian Viets on temperature sex determination and coloration in case you want to specify those aspects of the geckos you breed. Also for you breeders, there are thorough instructions on the set-up and calibration of a home-made incubator. Roger Klingenberg, DVM, covers the diseases of the leopard gecko and their treatment in one dedicated chapter. Ron Tremper has a chapter on color and pattern variation illustrated primarily by photos of his own geckos. Tremper has developed much of what is now known about so-called "designer" leopard geckos. There is a nice section at the end of the book on other interesting geckos such as the Arizona Banded, the Texas Banded, the Central American Banded, the African Clawed, the Japanese Leopard, and the Malaysian Cat Geckos. There are plenty of eye-catching photos spread throughout the book.
This book may have more information than you need if you are a "casual" leopard gecko owner, but that is better than having insufficient information.
All you need to start leopard gecko ownership........2005-11-05
If you are a beginner owner like myself, then this book is all you need to get started and become experienced. All necessary topics are covered and there are numerous contributors to this books chapters which makes it an excellent and diverse read. I have not read other leopard gecko books but see little point at this time. Hard to go wrong with this.
Best leopard gecko book yet.......2005-07-17
The top gecko people in the country collaborated to write this book, and the information is extensive, but simple to understand. It goes beyond the beginner's how to set up a tank and feeding, and gets into breeding for different colors and all the different 'morphs' that have been created so far, with many good pictures. It is the most up-to-date so far in terms of new morphs (colors). After reading it the first time, I like to keep looking through it just for the pictures and to re-read the information on genetics 101. Besides being great little pets who will sit on your shoulder, Leopard Geckos are a popular classroom tool for teaching genetics at high school and college level, and I recommend this book for teachers and students. Most other Gecko books you pick up at the Pet Shop are not worth keeping.
BTW- Co-author and top breeder Ron Tremper is coming out with a more in-depth book soon (Summer 2005) for advanced breeding information and ideas. It will be the first of this type written on Leopard Geckos.

Jeff Cox provides the information new gardeners want in Perennial All-Stars: how to produce a garden full of healthy, attractive, low-maintenance plants. Cox, the enthusiastic host of HGTV's &Grow It!, has selected 150 perennials, both flowers and grasses, that grow well in North American climates. Each double-page plant entry tells how and where to grow the plant, how to propagate it, and a list of ideal planting partners. In addition, each entry displays a quick-glance sidebar that includes ideal hardiness zones, blooming season, size, color, light and soil requirements, and a substantial list of plant sources (detailed in the back of the book). Cox further assists the beginning garden planner with useful groupings: "Fragrant All-Stars," "Deer-Resistant All- Stars," "All-Stars for Full Shade," "All-Stars 4 Feet or Taller," and so forth. It's in no way intended to replace a complete plant encyclopedia, but novices will be happy with the excellent selection and informative, friendly format of Perennial All-Stars. --Barrie Trinkle

great for gardeners.......2007-05-17
I am really enjoying this book. It has given me a lot of good ideas for my garden this summer. I already have some of the flowers it lists, and I agree they are winners. An excellent book for beginning and experienced gardeners looking for new flowers for their yard.
One of the best !!.......2007-02-26
My wife wore out her 1st copy and the yard looks great.
A great reference.......2007-01-11
Keep this book on your counter all spring and summer long - you'll find lots of reasons to refer to it.
Handy reference book to have around.......2006-11-04
Great for the beginner gardener, it's easy to understand and gives a lot of information on planning your perrennial gardens to look great from early spring right into the fall.
Inspiring and informative.......2006-08-19
Many of my gardening books are useful for referencing the occasional problem or plant profile, but "Perennial All-Stars" was an engrossing read from cover-to-cover. The author has a great deal of enthusiasm for his subject--so much so that I think he picked more than 10 'Top 10' perennials out of his favorite 150.
That's okay. I admire his devotion and his knowledge of the perennial flower kingdom. His 150 all-stars also purport to be easy to grow and maintain, which is what I was looking for when I decided to add to my garden this fall. Unfortunately the author was so persuasive, I'm going to have to dig a new bed to fit in all of my choices from his book.
If you have a rough idea of the plant you're searching for, the front of this book is cross-indexed by various perennial characteristics such as 'spring blooming,' 'deer-resistant,' and 'full shade.'
Each of the perennials that was chosen for this book, is described in the following sections: an overall description and photograph of the plant; how to grow it; propagating the plant (useful especially for the more expensive or hard-to-find perennials); the right site for growing the plant; and other plants that go well with it. A 'spotlight' section summarizes the USDA plant hardiness zones, season of bloom, height x width, color, light requirements, soil requirements, place of origin, and where the perennial and/or its seed can be purchased.
The author tried to choose perennials that would flourish in all of the U.S. hardiness zones, but there are some exceptions that can't take the heat and humidity of the Deep South, e.g. peonies, or won't live through a very cold winter, e.g. Broadleaved Bear's-Breech.
"All-Star Perennials" is very useful and interesting. Just plan on doing some digging when you do read it.
