The career of Italian policeman Auerlio Zen has certainly had its operatic ups and downs: as a nasty colleague points out, "In Milan, you wrongfully arrest a man for the Tondelli murder, and 20 years later he tries to kill you after his release from prison. In Rome, you single-handedly 'solve' the Moro kidnapping, unfortunately too late to save the victim." So it's fitting that Michael Dibdin has used a real comic opera by Mozart and Lorenzo Daponte as the frame for his latest Zen outing. A Northern fish in Naples's polluted waters, Venetian-born Zen seems to have found the perfect job to make himself invisible, as head of the harbor police. But several tangled plots--including one that deftly turns the Daponte stew of unsuitable suitors and fake Albanians on its head--conspire to bring Auerlio into the spotlight one more time. Two of Dibdin's best Zen encounters, Ratking and Dead Lagoon, are available in paperback.
Book Description
An Aurelio Zen Novel
Michael Dibdin's overburdened Italian police inspector has been transferred to Naples, where the rule of law is so lax that a police station may double as a brothel. But this time, having alienated superiors with his impolitic zealousness in every previous posting, Zen is determined not to make waves.
Too bad an American sailor (who may be neither American nor a sailor) knifes one of his opposite numbers in Naples's harbor, and some local garbage collectors have taken to moonlighting in homicide. And when Zen becomes embroiled in a romantic intrigue involving love-sick gangsters and prostitutes who pass themselves off as Albanian refugees, all Naples comes to resemble the set of the Mozart opera of the same title. Bawdy, suspenseful, and splendidly farcical, the result is an irresistible offering from a maestro of mystery.

Aurelio Zen in Naples.......2006-02-06
Aurelio Zen has been dispatched from Rome to Naples to help the Polizia dello Stato responsible for law enforcement within the port area. He is going to fight against a terrorist gang called "Strade pulite" - Clean Streets. He is going to meet Signora Valeria Squillace and her two daughters Orestina and Filomena who wish to marry two members of the local Mafia, Gesualdo and Sabatino. Zen promises to help Signora Squillace by trying to "divert" the two men's taste for women and hires two "prostitutes", Libera and Iolanda while Orestina and Filomena are sent to London, allegedly to improve their English. Matters nearly get out of control when an American marine is killed by a gang of drunken Greek soldiers but whose identity the officers are not able to establish. Among the dead man's belongings there is a mysterious video cassette which is soon to vanish without explanation...
Nothing is what it seems to be, nobody is what they claim to be - except Zen with his usual bonhomie - and so numerous misunderstandings occur which make "Cosi Fan Tutti" the wittiest Aurelio Zen mystery written by Michael Dibdin.
Well..........2004-10-14
I normally quite like Aurelio Zen novels, and this has nearly all the elements that make the other Zen outings entertaining. However I found myself getting lost and distracted in the layers of parody, irony and parallel built into this Naples adventure.
Dibdin clearly liked his concept more than he liked his readers. Do not begin here if this would be your first Zen book.
If you're an opera fan who's a parody fan who likes mystery.......2003-05-22
If you're an opera fan who's a parody fan who likes mystery, this is for you. The mystery almost gets lost in the sometimes witty/sometimes not parallels between this plot and the opera of almost the same name. The detective is well-developed, but no other character is. It's amusing but not engrossing.
Zen's Aria: Fun, Fresh and Full of Life's Zest.......2002-11-19
Zen's debacle in Venice ("Dead Lagoon") places him in bit of a pickle: he's succeeded in alienating a powerful political party that now controls the Ministry of the Interior. Unwilling to wait calmly for the bottom to fall out, Zen hides himself in Naples as head of the harbor police. What follows entertains well; as Zen is well adapted to the under-the-table corruptness of Italy's bureaucracy, the openly criminal aspects of Naples imbues him with a relieved wrinkle-free lightness. Dibdin's portrayal of Naples infects the reader with a vibrancy that could only be qualified as operatic for indeed, he uses Mozart's opera as an outline for this foray replete with colorful, passionate characters: thieves, gangsters, prostitues, lovers, Zen's formidable mother and present/ex-girlfriends. The tone shines with a freshness that is missing from the first four works of the series, leading me to recommend that the books be read in sequence so that this one is fully appreciated.
Love the Zen, not the farce........2001-08-03
Dibdin excels (usually) when Zen is the focus of his intricate and interesting plots. Unfortunately, he only carried me so far this time. Yes, it is a farce with great promise -- and Dibdin plays very well with the original Cosi fan tutte -- but in my humble opinion, he copped out in the last two chapters. The surreal resolution of the intricate set-up just didn't work for me, in part because his stylistic choice of the self-consciously ironic narrator did not produce a compelling description of the action and resolution of the plot. It was like seeing a play that should have been funny, but was poorly directed.
With all of that being said, I of course went out and got the rest of the Zen books -- even when Dibdin fails, the results are better than most other stories out there!

A crazy book that is the perfect ending to his series!.......1996-11-05
Hawke finishes off this zanny series of his by doing what Ithought was impossible after the first two books--writing one evenmore crazy. Even if you missed the first two you will still have a lot of fun with this book and I guarantee it is like nothing you have ever read before.
Book Description
What if someone promised you he could offer a system sure to produce better health and all-around wellness? And what if he further dared to say he could do this in just one minute a day? You'd say that person was crazy, right?
But Dr. Ben Lerner has done just that. This best-selling author of
Body by God is offering a ground-breaking approach to wellness while reorientating the way you look at life and health. And here's the bonus: it's actually two books in one. On the left-hand side of each page is a fictional tale (based in reality) of a chiropractor running a God-centered office, assisting patients who have been disappointed or left behind by the "traditional" health care system. On the other side are the explanations of the technology, lifestyle methods, treatments, and action steps that can take readers to wellness. Once considered "alternative" medicine, chiropractic treatment is now considered part of a balanced approach to health.

Best book of the year.......2007-07-23
This book combines the hard science and a fictional story to bring home a point about health and wellness. Everyone interested in their health or health of a loved one should read this book.
Must read if you want to be healthy and avoid disease.......2007-06-01
Never have I found so much good insights in one place and in an easy to apply format. This book has changed my life and given me hope for something better.
Want to live well?.......2007-03-27
This book is excellent. The fictional stories are engaging and thought-provoking. The non-fiction side is equally engaging. I experienced a difference in my life before even finishing the book. It's well-researched, down to earth and solid. I highly recommend it!
yes, Yes, and YES !!!.......2006-10-21
FINALLY somebody wrote a book to fairly and accurately contrast the dominant models of health care in our country. The Mechanistic Model vs. the Vitalistic Model.
Having been employed in Big Pharma for years and seeing the inner workings of an industry that HEAVILY influences doctors prescribing habits, I can say this book has hit the nail right on the head. Not only does it expose the fallacy that "drugs cure", but it also documents the devastation on health care in America through medical error and adverse drug reactions. Justly it properly positions the mechanistic model where it was INTENDED to be used.... Crisis and Trauma.... not healthcare.
Most importantly, however, this book, eloquently and clearly gives the roadmap to outrageous health: spiritually, emotionally, and physically. As a Doctor, "One Minute Wellness", is on my MUST read list for my patients, my family and my friends.
Kudos, Dr. Ben and Dr. Loman
It just makes sense!.......2006-08-23
One Minute Wellness is a worthy continuation of Ben Lerner's previous book Body by God. You'll like Ben's attitude. Demanding full respect for your bodies given to you by God. In today's marketplace of fad diets this book is right on time. What keeps healthy people healthy is their entire lifestyle--that's what this book is all about. It takes into account how your body was designed and how to live in accordance with that design. Health comes from within, and Ben gives instruction on how to live to keep that health. Following Ben's advice just for a few weeks will bring you more energy, more vibrancy, and vitality. It is not always easy but it's worth it. The main value of this book is that it will help people to wake up and take charge of their health. Research the things that Dr. Lerner mentions. Add some regular exercise to healthy foods, and eliminate fast food (sodas, refined sugars, potato chips, white flour bread, fried foods, etc). You have more control over your health than you realize. It just makes sense to listen to your own body and respect its needs.
Book Description
No more dependence on cold medicines, prescription pills, and anti-depressants. With
One-Minute Wellness, you will revitalize every area of your well-being. And the bonus fiction story uniquely illustrates the authors' strategies at work in ordinary lives-a terrific motivator as you optimize your own life.

This easy-to-use guide provides information on how to grow sprouts at home, the best growing technique for each type of seed, health information on alfalfa srpouts and broccoli sprouts, sources for sprouting equipment and seeds, and lots of delicious recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Best Sprout Book.......2007-05-14
Great, no-nonsense narritive. I'd read it even if I wasn't into sprouting. Mark Mathew Braunstein is quirky and knowledgeable without being mystical or condescending. I was a little shocked, however, to hear his take on alfalfa sprouts.
A very complete, helpful guide.......2004-05-30
I have read several sections of books on sprouting, and have sprouted off and on, for 20+ years, but this is the best, most detailed, and therefore most helpful of everything I've found. I think teaching someone to sprout from a book is a little like learning to tie your shoes by book: it is easy once you've done it a while, but very difficult if you are a rank beginner. This book is written completely enough for the true beginner, but with LOTS of information for those wanting to "take their sprouting to the next level" by trying scores of different seeds. I finally learned WHY I didn't have success with some types of seeds, and WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT! The only disappointment is that the nutritional information seems mere assertions, with no charts of which sprouts yield what amounts of which nutrients; still, the book is very worth owning. And, by the way, sunflower sprouts are divine on a salad!
Sproutguy's revised review of the Revised Edition.......2000-08-02
Mark did a great job of updating this book! It is packed with a whole lot more info (not that the 1st edition wasn't packed as well) and is layed out beautifully. All I said in my review of the 1st edition still goes, but I now kinda enjoy the puns and the additional info makes this book even more indispensable. This is the BEST BOOK ON SPROUTING that currently exists! When all is said and done this is what remains: We (The Sproutpeople) have grown over 180 tons of sprouts (by hand) - from over 70 types of seed - since 1993, and when we have a question that we don't know the answer to, we pick up THIS BOOK!
A relatively comprehensive though dogmatic reference........1998-06-11
As a professional sprouter I have plenty of experience - and - have read every book under the sun on sprouts. Mark's book is full of terrible puns but when it comes to information on a wide variety of seeds is better than any other I have seen. It still suffers from the same problem as all the others - it states THE WAY to sprout. I have found that there are many ways to sprout and very few hard and fast rules. The result is that newbies follow the written advice and refrain from experimenting - thus limiting their sprouting experience and, I fear - the joy of that experience. It seems to me that everyone who writes books on sprouting must have read a book before they ever sprouted and that they eventually pass on the same misinformation they originally took as fact. I on the other hand didn't read a book until I'd sprouted for a year or more, and when I did I read that things that worked well for me couldn't possibly work at all. So, take what you read with a grain of salt and know this: seeds want to germinate (sprout). If you expose them to moisture they will do it, so sprouting is nothing more than making the the conditions good. Experiment freely. Happy Sprouting :-)

basic book on care of corals.......2007-04-11
this is a very basic book about the care of corals. if one is new to the hobby, then this is a starter. i finished reading this book in 1 hour.
a lot of good tips for reef keeping.......2007-03-08
it has a lot of good advices and it's easy to understand!
Great Miniature Reef Primer.......2007-03-04
This comprehensive book will allow anyone who follows the advice given, to develop their first miniature reef aquarium. I've been a hobbyist for over 40 years and I even bought a copy for myself. The author doesn't pull any punches, and gives a very clear description of what you should expect from your mini-reef aquarium.
The Simple Guide To Mini-reef Aquariums.......2007-02-15
This book is just what its title implies. A reader could set up and run a mini reef after reading this book. Very little other information would be required to do a mini reef well. The book is fun, easy reading.
Fun and encouraging but not enough.......2006-01-09
A fun and encouraging book that is practical when setting up a new tank. Up-to-date information that is well structured. On the downside, this book shys away from explaining some concepts or warnings in better detail and annoys when the author jokingly admits he doesn't really get it either because one has to be a chemist for this or that anyway.
Customer Reviews:
THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST BOOK.......2006-07-11
No doubt about it, if you need to buy one book to get aquainted with the hobby, this book is the one.
Being a librarian and new to the hobby, I have purchased about 12 books on marine aquariums now, some very good, but this is definitely the one to start with.
Information is current and presented effectively. It's filled with actual aquarium photos, unlike some great books that rely heavily on pictures from the ocean.
One complaint, and this was probably an editing ploy to sell more books, Kurtz claims you do not need to be proficient in fresh water aquariums in order to try marine. I HIGHLY DISAGREE WITH THAT, because you can learn a lot of lessons MUCH cheaper with freshwater fish than having to learn to manage water changes, overfeeding, medicating, and algae blooms with your salt-water friends.
Another complaint, my copy had poor binding and fell apart quickly.
Great for Beginners...but a bit confusing.......2004-06-09
I really have to give this book 5 stars - it is the first book I read on marine aquariums and it is the source that I bounce all new info off of. This book gives a great introduction to both fish-only and mini-reef aquariums. But that is also it's problem.
It took me a long time to untangle exactly what information in this book pertained to which set-up. The emphasis of the book is on mini-reefs (and I have since started a simple 55-gallon mini-reef, as well as a 29-gallon fish-only tank), but the best set-up for a beginner would undoubtedly be a fish-only or fish with hardy invertebrates set-up. And this book does cover these issues, but it all seems to get mixed-up with the full-blown mini-reef (which requires higher, and more expensive - way more expensive - lighting, filtration, and livestock). The sections on fish selection are informative, but incomplete (like exactly what should you feed each fish?).
All in all - no book is perfect, and this is a great place to start. For a briefer, but clearer, discussion of the types of set-ups, I would suggest that you consult The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. It covers the basic differences between each set-up in a much clearer fashion.
All in all, a fish-only saltwater aquarium is nowhere near as difficult as most people believe, especially if you have experience with maintaining water quality in a freshwater aquarium, and if you carefully choose your fish. This book will help you do both - but keep on reading when you're done - the more you know about this subject, the better. Especially for your fishies!
best for beginners.......2004-05-13
I bought this book before making the big mistake of blindly plumetting into marine aquriums. It openes my eyes before hand to what ws in store. I truly got a head start of the game with this precise, simple great eexplaining fun to read book.

Book Description
Home gardeners with a keen interest in design, as well as professional landscape designers, will find invaluable advice in this new approach. The book focuses on the general principles behind creating successful and beautiful plant combinations in both time and space-working with perennials in the context of trees, shrubs, and the surrounding landscape. The authors suggest looking across, into, and through the landscape. They ask the reader to consider the rhythms and connections in their designs, through such elements as echoes, linkages, and repetitions. More than just theory, Planting Design includes practical discussion of topics such as soil preparation, plant selection, and garden maintenance. Exceptional photographs show growth of a designed landscape over time, opening the gardener to new ways of seeing and thinking about their landscapes.
Customer Reviews:
A good book!.......2007-06-03
Planting Design is the most important aspect of landscape education and practice. It is also a subject that is very difficult to teach or to learn. This book can alleviate this problem. As the author of Planting Design Illustrated, I know how hard it is to do research and write a book on this subject.
In defense of a misunderstood book.......2006-10-26
As an admirer of Noel Kingsbury's prolific work, I was initially put off by this book. In some passages, it reads like a manifesto on a new approach to gardening. On futher reading, however, I have found it stimulating, valuable, and full of hard-to-find information on cutting edge work in ornamental gardening, particularly in Europe. Its emphasis on design of plantings for reduced maintenance in parks and public areas is not at all off point for the home gardener - certainly for this home gardener. I am 61, have only weekends for gardening, weekends often interrupted by other of life's demands, I garden on a difficult site with heavy wet clay and lots of deer. So any gardening approach that holds out a way to have a beautiful, sustainable garden, using plants suited to existing conditions, that I can create and maintain with minimal effort and time is certainly of value. Moreover, Kingsbury introduces me to some exciting names in gardening and to exciting gardens I've not known of: the work of Cassian Schmidt at Hermanshoff in Germany is only one example. This book is a window into a world of planting design and gardening that most of us have no access to (much of the published literature is in German) and Kingsbury brings it to light. I heartily recommend this book. It is a serious book, and gives more and more on successive readings. If your time is limited, you can reread sections that interest you and find more of value each time. I'm not sure what part Piet Oudolf actually played in this book, but he's certainly the preeminent practitioner of this style, and his apparently loose association with Kingsbury should continue. They are doing exciting work, and this book puts their work into a larger context and gives it a theoretical framework.
Disappointed, incredibly disappointed. .......2006-01-16
I would describe myself as a fan of Oudolf - by adopting and adapting some of his raison-être our own garden has changed beyond recognition, with masses of seasonal interest throughout the year. Kingsbury ghosted Oudolf's original work, Designing with Plants with some aplomb, Henk Gerritsen's turn of phrase in Dream Plants and More Dream Plants was always light, witty and insightful and while Gardening with Grasses seemed to bow to certain conventionalities, for European readers, the book opened up new vistas of possibilities. But with this offering the writers have run out of steam, or rather Kingsbury has as Oudolf appears to have participated little in the book's creation. This time Kingsbury's style is leaden - is the book a re-working of his recent thesis? It stinks of academia. Timber Press has done an excellent job re the images on the hard and dust cover (and this time all the pages are in the right order and the captions are all in English - not the case with my copies of previous work attributed to Oudolf that they have published). But as publishers they mislead in their suggestion that in this book `home gardeners ... will find invaluable advice in this new approach'. First of all the approach is not new, secondly the style is so leaden most would start to doze while reading it and thirdly not all home gardeners have the opportunity for creating public amenities for their community. For professionals the book may be of use but, as another reviewer has suggested, the narrative raises more questions than it answers, and the lists are short and somewhat mean.
Next time Oudolf's name appears on the cover of a new book I will wait until I get my hands on a copy so see what, if anything, is new and inspirational. In the meanwhile I will continue to use my dog-eared copies of previous work attributed to him which are well worth purchasing.
General Principles of "New Wave" planting.......2005-12-19
This book further elaborates and discusses the principles behind Piet Oudolf and Noel Kinsbury "New Wave" herbaceous perennial plantings. It is a general discussion for the serious gardner. Their intent is NOT to provide a step-by-step guide to designing, but suggest a "process" for key plant selection and combination. They are not located in North America, so you will find that some of their plant recommendations are difficult to find, or not specifically suited to your North America Plant Zone and no list can be casually taken from the book directly to your yard, but requires considerable effort on your part to identify those plants specific to your zone. For example, their list of 15 small trees to combine with perennials, only six might grow in my zone, I could not find 2 of those listed in my Sunset Western Garden Book, and 3 listed contradictory information to the Sunset Western Garden Book. So while their discussion of their "methods, discoveries and thoughts" are of interest, it will not easily transfer to a newly designed "new wave" perennial garden for the casual user.

Good Learning Tool.......2006-05-12
This is a good book for learning. There are some parts in the book that are not easy to understand. When completing some of the assignments, one should have an instructor or a tutor. The book is promising for classroom students. However, for the self learner it is not a walk in the park.
Hich Cost Hand Holding.......2003-05-08
If you have never worked with WORD, have no clue how to cut and paste, and are generally clueless about fundamental editing technicques with MS products, this book might help; others will find it sophomoric in its techniques, useless in its organization, and a waste of money. Apparently, it was written for classroom student; not for active users trying to solve a particular problem. For the former, it might be ok; for the latter, its utility is at negative infinity.
Helpful Guide for Anyone Inexperienced with MSPublisher 2002.......2003-04-30
If you haven't worked on Publisher much and need to for your work or school, etc. I would definitely recommend this book. It teaches about many different features in Publisher that I didn't even know existed. However, don't spend the money if you don't use Publisher much. ...
You can learn how to design all sorts of print materials... you can even post what you have designed in Publisher on websites... I think that is one of the nicer features. The instructions in the book are very easy to understand and give you step-by-step instruction for working hands-on on your computer.
A Magazine Not a Book.......2003-01-20
The content of this book is OK, but the poor physical quality of this book makes it feel like a magazine instead of a book. The cover, the binding, the thin paper are actually less substantial than some high quality magazines. This book set a new LOW standard in this respect.

Customer Reviews:
Best computer book I've ever used.......2003-10-02
After wasting time and money on other nearly-worthless computer software books in the past, I wasn't expecting this book to be much better--but wow, was I suprised. It's wonderful! It's written as a text book, with chapter objectives, excercises, etc. There's even a companion web site with project files you can download to use in conjunction with the book..and if you are an instructor teaching with the book, there are additional instructor resources available online.
The graphics are good, the instructions are easy to follow, and each chapter teaches practical skills to help you master common tasks and projects. It's amazingly fun and easy to use.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is learning Publisher for any type of project...or to anyone who is teaching others how to use Publisher.
